CLIMATE

Founded in 1912 by Dr. Alexander “A.J.” Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon in the Arizona Territory, Chandler has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. Its central location in the southeast valley provides easy access to some of the area’s best attractions, but you don’t have to go anywhere to have a good time. Chandler has great museums and attractions, diverse culture and a vibrant restaurant scene. Welcome!

You’ll have a hard time finding better weather anywhere. Chandler has an average temperature of 85 degrees and more than 330 sunny days per year.

Some locals aren’t even aware of these impressive attractions, but they are well worth the visit! Be sure to include them in your itinerary.

CHANDLER MUSEUM AT THE MCCULLOUGH-PRICE HOUSE Located in a historic 1938 pueblo rival home, this museum tells the story of Chandler through artifacts and photographs and offers family-friendly programs such as Science Saturday. For an additional look at what life was like during the city’s early days, visit its sister property at Tumbleweed Park. The ranch there features a 1917 home, historic grocery store and farm equipment. Admission is free and the home is open for tours during special events.

VETERANS OASIS PARK The park itself may not be a secret, but few people realize all it has to offer. In addition to 4.5 miles of trails, wildlife viewing areas and a learning-oriented playground, the 113-acre site includes a 5-acre community fishing lake, a butterfly and hummingbird habitat, and a self-guided Chandler Solar System Walk. The park is also home to the Environmental Education Center, featuring exhibits and desert animals. Admission is free.

VISION GALLERY City Hall is probably the last place you’d want to go on vacation – unless you’re in Chandler.

Here, City Hall is where you’ll find the Vision Gallery, a non-profit art gallery displaying the paintings, ceramics, sculptures and other works of more than 300 regional artists. Don’t miss the gallery’s “Art-O-Mat,” a sophisticated vending machine that dispenses miniature pieces of art. Admission is free.

THE GREAT AMERICAN BARBEQUE & BEER FESTIVAL The sauce can be sweet, vinegary, tangy, spicy or smoky. It can be thin or thick. QUIRKY FUN FESTIVALS Chandler is known for its fun and sometimes quirky festivals. If you’ve never seen a Chihuahua race, witnessed the lighting of a holiday tumbleweed tree or cheered for your favorite ostrich as it dashed across the finish line, you’re missing out!

Chihuahua Races Every year, during the Cinco de Mayo celebration, the world’s smallest dog breed shows it has the biggest heart in this widely popular race. Winners receive trophies more than twice their size and much deserved accolades. There’s also a pageant that crowns an adorable Chihuahua king and queen.

Ostrich Festival Before Chandler was a technology powerhouse, it was a farming community where locals raised ostriches, alongside other livestock, for the birds’ fashionable feathers. Today, you’ll be hard pressed to find ostriches, but Chandler still honors the bird with a festival featuring ostrich races, a petting zoo, live music, a parade and a fun run (for humans).

Classic Car and Hot Rod Show

Tumbleweed Tree Lighting Ceremony Scraggly tumbleweeds still roll across Chandler’s streets from time to time, but since 1957, the city has put them to use. Throughout the year, the park operations division collects tumbleweeds, and in December, those tumbleweeds are arranged on a 25-foot wire frame and decorated with holiday lights, paint and glitter. The lighting ceremony is a Southwest tradition and kicks off the holiday season.

Kids can see living desert creatures like snakes and scorpions (all in cages, thankfully!) at Veterans Oasis Park’s Environmental Education Center or have an “urban fishing” experience at the park’s lake and other lakes throughout Chandler. Tots can ride an open-air train or a carousel while their older siblings play disc golf or try their skill in an archery center. There are play zones at most parks—one even has a replica of a 1920s-style Chandler ranch.

Hiking You might be surprised that National Geographic has named metro Phoenix one of the nation’s top 15 cities for hiking, but you’ll understand why once you get out on our trails. Both San Tan Regional Park and South Mountain Park offer trails of varying difficulty, including hikes with city views. Further out, Camelback Mountain, North Mountain Preserve and McDowell Sonoran Preserve are great options. Always bring plenty of water and dress appropriately before heading out.

Mountain Biking Some of the area’s best hiking destinations also are great for mountain biking. San Tan Mountain Regional Park and South Mountain Park both are known for their challenging, scenic mountain bike trails. So is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

For a change of pace, so to speak, try the McDowell Mountain Regional Park. It has three, 5-mile competitive mountain bike loops (one for beginners, one for intermediate riders and one for experts), for a total of 15 miles.

Cycling If you prefer smoother ground when you cycle, the Paseo Vista Trail’s 6.5-mile paved trail is a great option. Extend your ride further along the Consolidated Canal on the 18-mile path that continues from Chandler through Gilbert and into Mesa. Or, take advantage of Chandler’s 327 miles of paved bike lanes and paths. Daredevil riders can test their skills at the Chandler Bike Park, the Valley’s only public, no-charge facility for BMX, Freestyle and Grind.

Kayaking Chandler may be located in the Sonoran Desert, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy kayaking and other water sports. At Tempe Town Lake, near the Arizona State University campus, you can rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats. If you have more time, head out on the Apache Trail to Saguaro or Canyon lakes for a day of kayaking. Tubing the Salt River is also a popular pastime in the summer months, May through September.

Horseback Riding Live out your dream of being a cowboy (or cowgirl) in Chandler. At the Koli Equestrian Center, ride next to your friends and loved ones – no nose-to-tail riding here – as you explore the Gila River Indian Reservation. Or, hit the trails of South Mountain Park with Ponderosa Stables.

You can also ride at Papago Park in Tempe, Saguaro Lake Ranch Stables and the Stables at Fort McDowell.

San Tan Regional Park A little over a half hour drive from Downtown Chandler, this regional park is one of Maricopa County’s best kept secrets. Hike to the 3-mile Goldmine Trail for a bird’s eye view of Phoenix, Queen Creek and San Tan Valley. The park is also extremely popular with mountain bikers who like to test themselves on the 5.1-mile San Tan Trail as well as horseback riders and picnickers.

Paseo Vista Trail A 6.5-mile, multi-use pathway, the Paseo Trail runs along the Consolidated Canal from Galveston Street south to Riggs Road. You can walk, job or bicycle the paved eastern side, or bicycle or horseback ride on the unimproved path on the western side of the canal. Parking is available at Tibshraeny Family Park and Tumbleweed Park.

Koli Equestrian Center Experience the Sonoran Desert as Native Americans have for centuries during a horseback ride at the Koli Equestrian Center on the Gila River Indian Reservation. Four 90-minute rides leave throughout the day from September through May; rides are shortened to 60 minutes during the summer and are limited to morning and evening times. Ages six and up and beginning riders are welcome.

South Mountain Park When National Geographic named Phoenix one of the nation’s best hiking cities, the magazine specifically mentioned South Mountain Park – the largest municipal park in the world – and its network of roughly 58 miles of trails suitable for hiking, trail running, horseback riding and mountain biking. Javelina Canyon Trail, which begins at the Beverly Canyon parking lot at 46th Street, is the easiest trail. For a panoramic view of the entire Valley, hike (or drive) the 5.5 miles to Summit Road to Dobbins Lookout.

Tempe Town Lake This 2-mile-long, manmade lake adjacent to the Arizona State University campus and Papago Park is perfect for watersports. You can rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats and even electric boats here. Or, if you’d rather stick to land, try walking, jogging or bicycling the pathways surrounding the lake.
