With 62 parks, plus six aquatic centers, Chandler has plenty of green spaces and water playgrounds for kids. Whether your family is toddlers, tweens, teens or all three, Chandler is built for families! Kids can see living desert creatures like snakes and scorpions (all in cages, thankfully!) at Veterans Oasis Park’s Environmental Education Center or have an “urban fishing” experience at water features here and other Chandler parks. Tots can ride an open-air train and a carousel, play disc golf, or try their skill in an archery center. There are play zones at most parks, and one has a replica of a 1920s-style Chandler ranch.
Downtown Chandler With more than 20 award-winning restaurants, including the SanTan Brewing Co., a microbrewery serving some of Arizona’s finest draft beer, downtown is anchored by the historic Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort. Stroll its trellis-covered walkways and colonnades and get a feel for its history and energetic renewal. Browse the square’s unique galleries and boutique shops or enjoy a special event – more than 60 of which are held in Downtown Chandler each year.

Vision Gallery – City Hall A non-profit art gallery managed by the Chandler Cultural Foundation, Vision Gallery represents more than 300 local and regional artists. You can discover a variety of original artworks from oil and acrylic canvasses, to ceramic works, sculpture, jewelry and more. Vision Gallery is also home to “Art-O-Mat,” one of two in Chandler. The Art-O-Mats are vending machines from which you can purchase miniature pieces of art - from jewelry to photos or paintings. A unique grab bag concept that's fun and whimsical!
Chandler Center for the Arts
Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery of Western American and American Indian Art A nod to the great Southwest is Chandler’s Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery of Western American and American Indian Art. The private collection is a gift from the late Chandler businessman Eddie Basha, Jr. in honor of his aunt who helped care for him as a child. The gallery features more than 5,000 pieces and is located in the Bashas’ corporate office.
Public Art Sculptures made of metals, limestone, and mirrors are among numerous pieces of public art on display in Downtown Chandler. In addition, you can see portraits, landscapes in pastels and acrylics, inlaid paving, and many other works. Stop by City Hall to pick up a map or download one from the visitChandler.com website.
Theater and Performing Arts In downtown, the Chandler Center for the Arts is a world-class performing arts venue with superb acoustics. Some of Chandler’s most fun festivals are its quirkiest. Some of Chandler’s eccentric traditions started more than 20 years ago. If you’ve never seen a Chihuahua race, witnessed the lighting of a tumbleweed tree, or observed ostriches vying for first place, you’ll want to check out Chandler’s festivals.
Ostrich Festival
Chihuahua Races Every year during the Cinco de Mayo celebration, fans gather in Downtown Chandler to watch the smallest dog breed race. Winners receive trophies… massive compared to the tiny dogs! The event also features a pageant that crowns a Chihuahua king and queen. Admire these lovable little pooches as Chandler honors the Hispanic community. Ostrich Festival For 25 years, Chandler has celebrated its roots as a farming community that raised ostriches along with other livestock. Highly prized for their fashionable feathers, Chandler continued honoring ostriches after the fashion faded. Today the main attraction is to watch the ostriches compete. There’s also a petting zoo, live music, a parade, and a fun run for humans.
Woofstock Do you remember Woofstock? No, not the 60s music scene. It’s the festival that honors service dogs! If you’ve never been, the tribute to four-legged friends holds special demonstrations showing canine abilities in agility and entertainment. Chandler partners with the American Service Animal Society and Maricopa County Animal Care and Control for this special event. Tumbleweed Tree Lighting Ceremony Iconic “tumbling tumbleweeds” are used in a unique fashion every holiday season, a tradition since 1957. The only city in the U.S. to use them in its official holiday celebration, Chandler’s official Christmas tree is made of tumbleweeds. They are collected throughout the year by the city’s park operations division and arranged onto a 25-foot wire frame. The festive frame is decorated with holiday lights, paint and glitter.

HISTORIC VISION Town founder Dr. Chandler came to Arizona in 1887. He bought 18,000 acres, Chandler Ranch, and established a canal company to bring irrigation to area homesteaders who bought parcels. For the new town, Dr. Chandler commissioned architects to design a business plaza, accented by fountains, landscaped boulevards, footbridges across the Commonwealth Canal, and imported exotic trees. The showpiece of Dr. Chandler’s “City Beautiful” was the magnificent Hotel San Marcos. A mission revival style hotel, it was designed by architect Arthur Burnett Benton. Chandler’s downtown square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but it is far from old and stodgy. Special events are held there including an Art Walk on the third Friday of each month, a classic car show, the Great American Barbecue & Beer Festival, a Jazz Festival, and the Chandler Indian Art Market just to name a few! visitChandler.com
