It all started with Dr. Alexander “A.J.” Chandler in 1912. He had a vision of a downtown with monumental buildings

framed by parks and green spaces. That vision has come to pass. Visitors and residents alike are attracted to Chandler’s vibrant energy and charm.

Family Fun

With 60 regional, parks, plus six aquatic parks, Chandler has plenty of green spaces and water playgrounds for kids. Whether your family is toddlers, tweens, teens or all three, Chandler is built for families! Kids can see living desert creatures like snakes and scorpions (all in cages, thankfully!) at Veterans Oasis Park’s Environmental Education Center or have an “urban fishing” experience at water features here and other Chandler parks. Tots can ride an open-air train and a carousel, play disc golf, or try their skill in an archery center. There are play zones at most parks, and one has a replica of a 1920s-style Chandler ranch.

Downtown Chandler

Businesses in downtown Chandler thrive because of the City’s continuing renewal and development. With more than 20 award-winning restaurants, including the SanTan Brewing Co., a microbrewery serving some of Arizona’s finest draft beer, downtown is anchored by the historic Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort. Stroll its trellis-covered walkways and colonnades and get a feel for the history that is combined with its energetic renewal. Or, browse the historic square’s unique galleries and boutique shops.

Historic Vision

Town founder Dr. A.J. Chandler came to Arizona in 1887. He bought 18,000 acres, Chandler Ranch, and established a canal company to bring irrigation to area homesteaders who bought parcels. For the new town, Dr. Chandler commissioned architects to design a business plaza, accented by fountains, landscaped boulevards, footbridges

across the Commonwealth Canal, and imported exotic trees. The showpiece of Dr. Chandler’s “City Beautiful” was the magnificent Hotel San Marcos, a mission revival-style hotel, designed by architect Arthur Burnett Benton. Chandler’s downtown square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but it is far from old and stodgy. Special events are held there including an Art Walk on the third Friday of each month, a classic car show, the Great American Barbecue and Beer Festival, and Chandler’s Jazz Festival just to name a few! One of Chandler’s long-standing events to be held in 2013 is the historic Ostrich Festival, which will celebrate its 25th year. This event commemorates the agricultural importance of ostrich farms that were popular in Chandler’s past. Stylish women of the 1910s wore ostrich plumes in their hats that were supplied by Chandler’s ostrich farms.

Looking to the Future

Though Chandler’s past is important, city leaders are looking toward the future. Chandler’s public art connects the existing civic campus and downtown core to public gathering spaces. The new City Hall complex recently won a LEED Gold Certification, and sustainable, lush landscaping frames Downtown Chandler, creating an environmentally friendly design and function. Visitors can take a tour of City Hall upon request to find out more. Chandler’s personality continues to blossom, even after celebrating its 100th birthday. The city is buzzing with incredible art, sporting spectacles, outdoor experiences and other events.

>> 25 years of ostrich festival fun! In 1989, Chandler began a unique community celebration, called Ostrich Festival, in honor of the gangly bird that brought Chandler farmers prosperity during the city’s early years. This year is Ostrich Festival’s 25th year. Ostrich farming put Chandler on the map when town founder Dr. A.J. Chandler experimented with the venture. The “get rich quick” scheme was being advertised heavily at the time. He purchased 200 birds and kept them at his ranch between Mesa and Chandler. Later, he moved them to a site that is now the San Marcos Hotel’s golf course. Other farmers followed suit. Twelve local men organized a “cattle drive” of sort in 1914. They herded (or tried to) 300 ostriches from Glendale, Arizona, to Chandler. On today’s freeways, that trip would take about 35 miles and about 30-40 minutes. But the wranglers had to travel many miles along the Gila River over several days. Herding ostriches was not easy. The birds wandered into camp, tried to drink the wranglers’ coffee, and ran off with flaming sticks that lit small brush fires in the desert. Ostrich farming, though memorable, only lasted until the 1920s. In 1914, with the start of World War I, women were cutting back the amount they spent on accessories. Sleek flapper styles began to emerge; large ostrich feathers were out. Little by little, local farmers sold off their bird herds. The Ostrich Festival revives interest in the Chandler’s history and makes for a fun weekend for the whole family. Ostrich races are the main attraction, and there are a lot more activities including a petting zoo, live music, a parade, fun run and more to help you explore Chandler’s ostrich legacy.

In 1901, the average price for a pound of ostrich feathers was $26. That’s the rough equivalent of $700 in today’s dollars! The Ostrich Festival has been featured in the Hollywood movie, “Waiting to Exhale” and a Harlequin romance novel. Ostrich farming was viewed as a “get rich quick” scheme in the early 1900s. One ostrich egg weighs 3 pounds, which equals about 2-1/2 dozen chicken eggs! A pair of ostriches could produce as many as 30 to 35 eggs per year. It would take 1 hour to boil an ostrich egg.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Subway Fresh Fit 500 (Avondale) – A stock car race held annually, it is one of only four NASCAR Cup Series events measured in kilometers instead of miles.

April MLB Arizona Diamondbacks (Phoenix) – Arizona’s boys of summer take the field as Diamondbacks baseball begins at Chase Field. Chandler Jazz Festival – Bourbon Street comes to Downtown Chandler with this jazz-filled weekend highlighting local and national bands. May WNBA Basketball Phoenix Mercury (Phoenix) – The Phoenix Mercury begin its summer season at US Airways Center in Phoenix. Cinco de Mayo Celebration and Chihuahua Races – Chandler joins the Cinco de Mayo festivities with its own spin, and there’s a treat: Chihuahua races! Las Noches de las Luminarias (Phoenix) – Thousands of luminarias produce soft lighting throughout the paths at the Desert Botanical Gardens.
