All Things Chandler

handler was founded in May 1912, and celebrates its centennial along with the state of Arizona in 2012. Chandler began with a vision by Dr. Alexander “A.J.” Chandler of creating a downtown made of monumental buildings framed by parks and green spaces. Situated just 20 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Chandler is an inviting destination in metro Phoenix.

Both visitors and residents are attracted to the vibrant energy and charm that is Chandler.

Family Fun

A great place for family vacation fun or to raise a family, whether toddlers, tweens or teens, Chandler has a variety of experiences to keep kids occupied and avoid any outbursts suggesting boredom.

With 60 regional, community and neighborhood parks, plus six aquatic parks, Chandler has plenty of space where kids can play. Chandler parks have unique features in addition to “standard” playgrounds.

Kids can view live desert creatures like snakes and scorpions (all in cages, thankfully!) at the Environmental Education Center at Veteran’s Oasis Park or have an “urban fishing” experience at many of Chandler parks’ water features. At Desert Breeze Park and Desert Breeze Railroad, tots can ride an open-air train and a carousel.

Paseo Vista Park is 64 acres of fun with play spaces, disc golf, an archery center, walking trails and dog parks. It is fun for the whole family and Fido, too! Playtopia at Tumbleweed Park

Anchored by the historic Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort, the historic square has trellis-covered walkways and colonnades. Stroll Downtown Chandler and browse the unique galleries, boutique shops and independent restaurants.

Historic Vision

Dr. Chandler, the town’s founder, came to Arizona in 1887.

He amassed 18,000 acres of land that became Chandler Ranch. Homesteaders bought parcels, and Dr. Chandler established a canal company to bring irrigation. For his new town, Dr. Chandler turned to southern California architects who designed it with a park in the midst of a business plaza, accented by fountains, landscaped boulevards, footbridges across the Commonwealth Canal, and imported exotic trees.

The showpiece of Dr. Chandler’s “City Beautiful” was the magnificent Hotel San Marcos, a mission revival style hotel designed by architect Arthur Burnett Benton. That beautiful style continues today. The square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But it’s far from old and stodgy.

Numerous special events are held including an Art Walk held the third Friday of each month, a Classic Car & Hot Rod Show in February, the Great American BBQ & Beer Festival in March, a Jazz Festival in March, and TASTE – the Chandler Culinary Festival in October – just to name a few!

You can also get a taste of Chandler’s quirky side with events like the Annual Ostrich Festival in March and the everpopular Chihuahua races held every May at the Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Chandler’s personality continues to blossom, even as it turns 100. If you are looking for a quick weekend getaway or a winter home-away-from-home, Chandler will charm you with its world-class shopping, near-perfect weather and recreational activities including golf, family fun parks, hiking, biking, and swimming.

Looking to the Future

Though Chandler has an important past, city leaders have their eyes on the future. They’ve incorporated public art within Chandler, especially at the newly-constructed City Hall complex. Seeking a LEED Gold Certification, the public art connects the existing civic campus and downtown core to public gathering spaces. Sustainable, yet lush landscaping, frames Downtown Chandler, and other sustainable concepts are incorporated into the City Hall complex’s design and function. Downtown Chandler Art Walk 3rd Friday of the month, 6-10 p.m. A great evening showcasing local artists displaying their works for purchase along with live music and artist demonstrations throughout the square.

miles of trails. A primary purpose of the facility is to recharge reclaimed water into the ground for later use. The staff works with local schools to develop nature-oriented activities that complement their curriculum.
