Nicknames Arizona’s most famous and now official nickname “The Grand Canyon State” celebrates its most iconic feature, the Grand Canyon. Arizona is also known as the “Copper State” revealing its abundance in this mineral. Open Space Approximately 85 percent of Arizona’s land is comprised of national forests, national parks, recreation and wilderness areas, wildlife preserves and Indian reservations. In addition, Arizona is home to several of the world’s “sky islands,” mountains surrounded by valleys that boast wide-ranging ecosystems of plant and animal life. Size The total area of Arizona is 113,998 square miles (295,000 square kilometers) and is the 6th largest state in the U.S. All New England plus the state of Pennsylvania would fit inside Arizona. Given the upcoming games in Arizona, we thought it’d be fun to break down of some football verbiage and then translate it into what it means in the hospitality world, whether you’re the hotel sales person or the meeting planner. University of Phoenix Stadium

Super Bowl XLIX, the 49th edition of the Super Bowl is scheduled to be played on February 1, 2015, at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinals. Kicking off Super Bowl Week in Arizona, the Pro Bowl pits the NFL’s top talent against each other, regardless of conference. The 2015 Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, January 25, 2015. Audible A play called by the quarterback at the line of scrimmage to make a change from the play that was called in the huddle. This is called a contingency plan/rain out back-out in the events world. A great salesperson always has a contingency plan and never books space without having a plan. Blitz When an unusual number of defensive players, usually linebackers, go after the quarterback throwing the ball rather than staying in the backfield waiting to see where the quarterback throws it. In our world, when we hear the word blitz, we automatically think of sales blitz! Think about unique ways that you can reach customers or attendees.

4th Down Conversion When attempting to go for it on

fourth down and converting, giving your team a new set of downs. This is also known to us as the last day in the end of the quarter. We are all trying everything we can to get just one more contract to keep us alive for the next set of downs (aka: the next quarter).

From nationally recognized golf courses to premier PGA tournaments, Arizona fits the tee. Arizona’s golf courses are as diverse and spectacular as the state’s famed landscape. Ranging from desert target-style courses to links courses and alpine fairways, nearly every type of terrain – and difficulty level – is represented here. Arizona offers layouts of every configuration at more than 300 courses, making the state one of the world’s premier golf destinations. Two-thirds of the courses are in Greater Phoenix, primarily Scottsdale, with many of the rest Phoenix Open concentrated in and around Tucson. With a steady influx of golf schools, golf shops, golf vacation packages and gated golf communities, the state’s golf profile continues to rise. And deep discounts on green fees in summer, as well as airconditioned carts, mean golf is never out of season in Arizona. Before you arrive, call ahead for details on the Arizona golf courses that interest you – and make sure you ask about current rates and availability. In the winter, golf courses in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tucson, Lake Havasu and other warm spots are in their peak season, so you may need to book early. You can also opt for summertime golf in more moderate climates in Northern and North Central Arizona, where many sites offer idyllic scenery and challenging courses.

Some Top Tee-Off Spots Greater Phoenix With nearly 200 courses, it’s tough to come up with a definitive “best” list, but target courses consistently praised include Verrado Golf Club tucked in the foothills of the White Tank Mountains; Tom Fazio’s challenging Raptor at Grayhawk in Scottsdale; the Native American-owned We-Ko-Pa on the Fort McDowell Yavapai Reservation, with unobstructed mountain views; and Jay Moorish’s South course at The Boulders in Carefree and his Monument course at the Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North, both known for their eyepopping scenery. Traditionalists enjoy the Scottish-style links laid out by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore at the Talking Stick South course, on land owned by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community; and the Arizona Biltmore’s Adobe course, created in 1929 by celebrated golf course architect William P. “Billy” Bell. In the winter, tee times at two excellent and inexpensive municipal courses, Papago in Phoenix and the Champions Course at Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale, are very sought after.

Tucson Tucson’s Pascua Yaqui Tribe broke ground on its newest amenity in December 2012, an 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course, situated directly south of Casino Del Sol Resort’s AVA Amphitheater. The course, named Sewailo, means “flower world” in the Yaqui language and features large lakes, flowing streams, waterfalls and plush landscaping blending with the desert environment to create an “oasis” effect. In addition to the grounds, Sewailo also offers the first Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf in Arizona, one of only five in the nation. The instructional programs are designed for all ages and ability levels. Featuring an expansive dual-ended driving range more than 375-yards long, a 2,000 square-foot climate controlled teaching facility and multiple practice bunkers, the Nicklaus Academy offers a full complement of instruction programs designed for everything from individual lessons to group instruction, golf schools, corporate programming and community programs. Of the city’s five reasonably priced municipal courses, the flagship Randolph, long the site of LPGA tours, is a favorite for traditional play. More typical of desert course settings are the Santa Catalina Foothills, home to Tom Fazio’s two Ventana Canyon creations. Locals and visitors have long flocked to Omni Tucson National for its immaculate Midwestern-style greens; they are also be able to play the resort’s Tom Lehman-designed desert course.

The Rest of the State In the west, Parker’s Emerald Canyon, following the shores of the Colorado River, leads duffers on a wild but gorgeous golf ride. Gary Panks had a hand in three top courses to the north, all links-style: Elephant Rocks at Williams, ponderosa pine-shrouded greens at nearly 7,000 feet; the South Course at Antelope Hills in Prescott, offering great mountain and granite dell views; and Sedona Golf Resort, with breathtaking red rock backdrops. And, as of September 2013, Enchantment Resort can now be counted among golf’s most appealing travel destinations. Seven Canyons golf club is now part of Enchantment Resort, giving resort guests exclusive access to this 18-hole championship course designed by Tom Weiskopf and named one of America’s best courses. Located on 200 acres, the par 70 course measures 6,746 yards and is surrounded by the beauty of Sedona’s red rocks and evergreen national forest.

Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix is home to MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks team and the NBA Phoenix Suns play only a block away at US Airways Center. Antelope Canyon

One of the most photographed places in Northern Arizona, Antelope Canyon can be experienced through the eyes of a native with a Navajo guide. To older Navajos, entering a place like Antelope Canyon is like entering a cathedral. Here, Mother Nature offers a place to be in harmony with something greater than oneself. Kayaking, Rafting, Tubing & Boating The City’s outskirts are chock-full of lakes, watering holes and rivers.
