VOLUNTEERS H

The more, the merrier

W

ithout volunteers, Executive Director Radiance Beals believes the Four States Agricultural Exposition would be impossible to organize annually. She would like to publicly acknowledge and thank the people who offer their time and skills to serve the show and ensure it runs smoothly year after year. “The Four States Ag Expo is a nonprofit so we rely very heavily on community support,” Beals said.“And volunteers come from all over the Four Corners, not just Cortez.” In total, it takes more than 40 volunteers to accomplish a variety of tasks. At the top of the volunteer chain, the Board of Directors help recruit vendors, clinicians, entertainment,

sponsors and of course, more volunteers, while other participating community members help direct traffic, shuttle attendees and provide information to attendees during the three-day event as well as assist with set-up of the show. “We have a week to set up before the vendors even arrive to set up, and volunteers play a huge role in that,” Beals said.“And then guess what, at the end of the show we have to take it all down. And volunteers are another huge blessing even more so probably because we are all beat by that point.” Without volunteers, the

show wouldn’t be able to offer the public access to top-notch vendors, clinicians and educational opportunities. As the Ag Expo approaches its 36th year, Beals wants to extend an extra invitation to anyone else who would like to volunteer because there is always a place for everyone. “It is a chance to be part of our country’s heritage,” she said.“Agriculture is a huge part of everyone’s everyday routines. You would be surprised by all that agriculture brings to your life, no matter where you live. It is having fun and making friends, and being part of something that you don’t get to do every day.”

he Ag Summit workshop is a special opportunity for education and earning valuable certifications. Dolores County CSU Extension director and chairman of the Development Corporation Gus Westerman said all workshops include educational sessions that focus on different aspects of agriculture and issues that local producers face. Board member Lenetta Shull said she works to develop new and innovative programs to fit the direction of the community. “In order for agriculture to survive in our community, we need to stay informed of the latest and most innovative ideas to sustain agriculture in our area,” Shull said.“The Ag Expo brings this type of opportunity to everyone, not just a select few.” The Ag Expo is an affordable way for locals to connect with experts through informative sessions geared to help

region to enhance their herd without traveling long distances. President Spark Reed said it is a great opportunity for growers to exhibit their animals and conduct business sales with ranch owners. “In the local four corners area, we have some very reputable registered seed stock growers,” Reed said.“The Ag Expo is a great place for them to advertise and get those animals in front of the buyers.” Make no mistake, however. Reed said the stock will be available for purchase on the condition that the animal stays at the show through Saturday. Seed Stock Row is not just for registered seed stock growers, though. Those with good commercial stock will also be allowed to showcase their animals and make business connections. Check out Seed Stock Row next to the Event Pavilion, open each day of the Ag Expo.

H YOUTH IN AG

Agricultural opportunities for less-experienced farmhands

T

eaching children about agriculture and complex food systems is not only practical but also invaluable. Agricultural education connects textbook science, health, nutrition, economics and technology with real-world experiences and applications. That’s one more reason the Four States Ag Expo focuses on providing youth events and education during the three-day event.

“Education is a gift that can not be taken away.” - Kristi Ross

For a complete list of youth events, times and locations, please see pages 17-19.

EDUCATION Board member Kristi Ross said one of the reasons she chooses to volunteer and support the expo is because it is focused on agriculture and education for all ages. “Education is a gift that can not be taken away,” Ross said.“That education is not just for the experienced adults, but for our youth, too–those that have grown up in ag and those who have no idea that the milk in the grocery store comes out of a cow.” For the third year, leaders from the Montezuma School-to-Farm Project will help organize a variety of hands-on educational activities for more than 600 children that visit the Children’s Agricultural Learning Facility or CALF. Groups of first graders from across the Four Corners region will participate in these interactive learning experiences during field trips Thursday and Friday. CALF is also open to the public all three days. During the field trips, children will rotate in groups between diverse stations run by agricultural experts and community leaders. These presenters manage their individual booths and give educational demonstrations on topics like soil and water conservation, animal science and beyond. It gives kids access to local growers and producers who can answer questions and teach new skills such as leather making, horse packing, dog training and gardening techniques.

ACTIVITIES Vendors and business connections are less of a priority for children, but there are still ways for them to experience agriculture and stay

entertained. Some of the activities available all three days include random chicken chasing, mutton busting, branding and roping. On Thursday, the Expo will host the second Ag-Ceptional Rodeo for children with varying disabilities. Last year about 40 children who can not compete in traditional rodeo events were invited to try roping, riding and barrel racing in a safer and more comfortable environment. “I look forward to the Rodeo more than anything else we do,” Ross said.“I love all that we do, but the Ag-Ceptional Rodeo is incredible. Watching those children experience such pure joy and freedom in that arena changed my life.” The event is modeled after the Exceptional Rodeo, an initiative of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association and gives kids with special needs the opportunity to show off their skills.Volunteers are working with physical and occupational therapists to design more activities for participants and grow the event year after year. In addition to the Ag-Ceptional Rodeo, Stotz Equipment will host a pedal tractor pull at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.Thursday and Friday. Finals for the competition will take place at 2:30 p. m. Saturday. Beth Lashell said the 4-H & FFA Livestock Judging is Friday, and the evening is rounded out with an Ice Cream Eating Contest. The Blow and Go Beef Show is on Saturday, and gives young people interested in agriculture and livestock the chance to practice showing animals in an arena and learn grooming and showing techniques.

ENTERTAINMENT H

Live entertainers improve indoor atmosphere at expo

A

t the Four States Ag Expo, attendees have a plethora of entertainment options like handson clinics and fun events. In addition to spectating and participating in events like random chicken chasing, the Ag-Ceptional Rodeo, Ag Junkyard Wars and the Ice Cream Eating contest, guests and vendors will have musicians to keep them the country spirit up. Executive Director Radiance Beals said the entertainers are there to provide a fun environment and cut up with the crowd. “It’s not just for the people who visit but for the vendors as well,” Beals said.“Even though it gets loud sometimes it is nice to have some live music rather than the radio which we listen to everyday. Our entertainers are great, and they interact with the crowd and the vendors, take requests, make it fun and improve the atmosphere.” There are a number of performers returning to the stage, while others are new to the lineup.Volunteer Jan Gilbert said though not all acts have performed at the Ag Expo, each comes highly recommended from community members.

H PRESENTERS

Horse clinicians share knowledge, teach skills

T

he Four States Agricultural Exposition is equal parts education and entertainment. Over the years, clinics and demonstrations have become a favorite for all who attend. This year the board invited three presenters to focus on different styles and methods to teach horses new skills. Executive Director Radiance Beals said the line-up of clinicians is fabulous, and very diverse. Though each presenter has a different background, they have one thing in common: They know how much time and patience it takes to train horses into working animals. body control of the horse and lead changes. “Horsemanship is the basic foundation,” Major said.“It helps the rider and the horse to get in sync.” Though Major trades cattle out of Cortez often, he’s never been to the Four States Ag Expo. He said he is most looking forward to meeting and helping some new people.

MIKE MAJOR

This year’s headliner, Mike Major, has always been a cowboy. Like “I realized finding a many who work in his field, Major cause that I believed said he has been a student of in and volunteering horses his whole life. He and where help was his wife own a yearling cattle operation on Flying A Ranch needed can generate in Fowler, Colorado and a large a positive impact on cow and calf operation on the our community by Rio Puerco Ranch in Belen, New implementing tried Mexico. I want to give the horses, it’s a big reward to help other people people what I have to offer and hope they are understand what has taken you a lifetime.” helped by it.” Major will present Thursday, Friday and Saturday For the most part, Brown is a self-taught at the Expo. His demonstrations will cover different horseman who’s been training and riding horses topics including horsemanship, ranch riding, for more than 30 years. He travels often, sometimes reining and starting young horses on cattle. Each clinic will give attendees the opportunity to work weekly for demonstrations across the country. In with Major and their horses on basic maneuvers, his experience, Brown found taking the time to

That’s why his methods are based on strengthening the relationship with horse. “Training is a process,” Brown said.“You and the horse start learning from the beginning, but it is just a progressive thing.” Brown will showcase gaiting and groundwork, but has a wide variety of other specialties, including trail riding.

TED HOLLAND Though it is his first time visiting the Four States Ag Expo, retired police officer Ted Holland is a professional presenter. He’s a certified instructor through the National Mounted Police Training School. Over the years, he’s attended a Calvary School taught by a Royal Canadian Mounted Police instructor, developed and taught the P.O.S.T. certified Mounted Police Training School and trained 10

mounted units throughout the states of Colorado and Missouri. “I’ve done a lot of other programs for folks,” Holland said.“What happens is usually people come out and say ‘how come your horse stands so still?’ so I started to teach civilians how police officers train their horses.” Holland will start by teaching groundwork, then move toward desensitizing the horse from distractions. Some of his program includes small jumps, obstacles and balls for the horse to push around. However, Holland is most looking forward to receiving feedback from attendees. “I’d like to have questions from people,” Holland said.“Because when people have questions, I learn from that too. I like to see what kind of things other people do with their horses. I get a kick out of it. To see people finally make their horse do something that they didn’t think their horse could do is a neat thing to watch.”

H STOCK DOGS

Experts demonstrate dogs’ natural herding abilities “Herding is really hard when you first start. As humans, we want to tell them how to do it, but the dog knows. So you have to keep your mouth shut and let them work, while making sure the stock are safe.” - Cathy Sumeracki

D

ogs are a human’s best friend, but individuals in agriculture know they can be so much more. Dogs are especially beneficial for herding livestock if properly trained. Though certain breeds have a herding instinct, any breed can learn to herd. And that’s why the Four States Ag Expo invites experts to demonstrate the skills and best practices to help the audience members understand how to treat the dog as a teammate.

Whether new to herding or well-versed in the world of working dogs, there is something for everyone here. Cathy Sumeracki will work with Mia Stovall and Kris Read and their livestock and working dogs to perform demonstrations, as well as host an unsanctioned herding competition, a trick dog seminar and testing for titles. All are open to the public, and participants must pay the Four States Ag Expo admission. The show does not allow dogs entry, unless they are participating in one of the events. Participants should enter with their dog at the south gate behind the grandstands. “This is our fifth year,” Sumeracki said.“We love the Four States Ag Expo. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone and having a great time. We will do things in the demo that you wouldn’t necessarily see in a competition.” Sumeracki hopes to help audience members build a relationship with their teammate and highlight the natural talent of working dogs by demonstrating tasks such as directing livestock into a trailer or pen. There’s nothing like a herding relationship,” Sumeracki said.“The dog knows more than you do, that’s the reality. So that giving up control and understanding a

14 H FO UR S TAT E S A G R IC U LT U R A L E X P OSI T I ON E VENT GUI DE

2018

dog’s talent really creates a relationship unlike any other sport. We’re really going to show what these dogs are used for from a rancher’s perspective.” The sheep and geese used for herding are local, and Sumeracki said they do not allow dogs to stress or bite the livestock. “We do not allow them to be run amuck,” Sumeracki said.“These animals are athletes, and they will be treated as such. Correct herding is calm and quiet. We do not let our sheep get chased.” To participate in herding trials, instinct testing or the trick dog competition, sign up at https:// cathysumeracki.formstack.com/forms/ag_ exp_2018 or contact one of the demonstraters at the following email addresses: Cathy Sumeracki – csumeracki@gmail.com Mia Stovall – petstylist@frontier.net Kris Read – read@rmi.net
