OPINIÓN

SAN CHOLLO Toni Prat

... no podemos vender duros a cuatro pesetas.

OPINION

THE HOLY BARGAIN Toni Prat

Concept: Toni Prat. Performed by Pepe Serrano.

... we cannot continue to undersell our products.

It is surprising for someone in the business world to have to overhear comments made by people on the street such as “shops should always have sales,” or “they should give you free parking with each purchase, however small it may be”, or “for the price we pay they could include free home delivery”, or “they should offer to wrap this in gift paper and tie a bow around it”. If we kept count of all these comments, we could compile a collection of complaints about the high cost of living and how well those in the retail industry supposedly live. As if this wasn't enough, in the newspaper I usually read there was a two-page article this Saturday boasting about having “found a bargain”. The article was entitled “Buying bargains is smart” and it began by saying “buying shoes for 60 euros when 6 months ago they cost 200 is a great deal”. And, like a magician pulling a rabbit from a hat, the writer continued: “A bargain is good business

for the consumer and, despite the fact that the product is sold at 30% of its original value, it is good business for the company who can sell off leftover stocks from last season's collections.”

How easy it is to make things add up for others... Now I would like to know the opinion of those manufacturers who “unfortunately” have to sell their stocks at 30% their original value. The writer rounded off the article by saying “outlets improve their offer to compete with those on the Internet”

I believe that the value of things has been lost, especially commercial profits. In an earlier article I blamed this situation on the illegal purchases that have been made from countries which do not respect workers' or consumers' rights, but there is currently another important factor which causes us to confuse the real cost of items, and this is the world of internet sales.

Well, I think they're doing us a slight favour. I also read in the “Digital Brand Experience” report by Razorfish in 2009 that approximately 40% of consumers who follow a brand on the social networks do so to look for “bargains”, while 30% do it because they are clients and 20% because of the interesting content published by the brand. So they get us used to looking for “bargains”, to repeating the slogan “I'm not stupid” (because I buy cheap things), and in the end the injured party is the manufacturer who ends up selling below the cost price and losing money. This is not a sustainable situation, as the recession has made manufacturers sell their stocks in desperation, but something has to change because this cannot go on for much longer; we cannot continue to undersell our products.

There are web pages which offer amazing deals (like the one mentioned in the newspaper), providing free home delivery as well as the possibility of a refund. Of course - someone has to say it - those who really make the deal are those who are selling, since in order to make a profit they have to buy at a very low cost. Here the newspaper article continues to defend the fact that in spite of selling off “leftover stock”, the manufacturer still earns money because he can cause his brand to reach a group of consumers who will gradually make an effort to buy these products at times when they are commercially trendy (something which I very much doubt).

Each day, more and bigger technical demands are made on textile articles for the home. As well as meeting expectations in the area of design and fashion, these articles must adhere to a series of parameters regarding functionality, “controllables” and “measurables” in order to fulfil current regulations. Today, in order to stay in the market, it is not enough for a mattress to be waterproof: its water resistance must also be measurable by controlling the value of the column, while the permanence of this quality after use and washing must also be ensured. What's more, by combining different materials we must obtain breathability, hydrophilicity, tensile strength, elasticity and

antibacterial effects, or a combination of fireproof and waterproof qualities, and so on. And all of this must be achieved using products and processes that respect the environment. Thus, there is a need to establish controls in production processes that guarantee the quality the client requires. The future lies in a continual search for improvement in how to comply with technical and service requirements, and in developing ways of differentiating a product from others in the national and export market. For Tintes Orient, S.A., and Laminats Orient, S.L., the ongoing quest for improvement in the characteristics of the articles they produce is a challenge. Hence their dedication to carrying out studies and making necessary investments in facilities which allow for maximum quality and consistency, recognised in Laminats Orient with the OEKO-Tex Standard 1000 certificate. www.tintesorient.com

Index textiles, the only bespoke event in the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region specifically for the home textiles industry, announces the support of internationally recognised brands at this year's event. Located at Index, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from October 22nd - 25th, Index textiles will showcase the latest collections and developments across Textiles, Soft Furnishings, Wall Coverings, Window Coverings, Rugs and Manufacturing. This fair is strategically placed within four hours travelling distance of some of the largest markets for global textiles production. Index textiles Project Manager Rebecca Lockwood explains: “I am delighted to have confirmed brands including Rivoli Silks, Wardé, Robert Allen (photo), J Robert Scott, James Brindley, Cesaro, Silk Dynasty, Studio Art and Jason D'Souza. This influential mix of global brands demonstrates the diversity of textiles available within the GCC (The Cooperation Council For The Arab States of The Gulf). Index textiles will offer our audience of interior designers, specifiers, contractors and purchasers a portfolio of quality solutions for any project.” Gina Vaduva, Sales and Marketing Manager at RAME Designer Solutions explains why Index textiles is the most important event in her

marketing calendar “It was a great opportunity to be part of Index 2010. With a response of highend customers, quality exhibitors to compete with and hosted in the commercial hub of the Middle East, RAME is compelled to participate again in Index 2011 and we're looking forward to meeting customers old and new, and our industry peers.” Over 7,400 of Index 2010 visitors went there to specifically source textiles solutions, so the organisers felt compelled to launch this show. The Index Exhibition is organised by dmg :: events (formerly known as dmg world media), a whollyowned subsidiary of the Daily Mail and General Trust plc (DMGT, www.dmgt.co.uk), one of the largest media companies in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1989, the company now manages over 80 exhibitions, conferences and online platforms for a variety of industries in up to 25 countries each year. www.indexexhibition.com/textiles

FERIAS

TRADE FAIRS

NEARLY 210,000 BUYERS SOURCE AT HKTDC TRADE FAIRS IN APRIL Nearly 10,400 exhibitors and close to 210,000 trade buyers from 170 countries and regions took part in the trade fairs mounted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). More than half the visitors were from the Chinese mainland and overseas.

The seven HKTDC trade fairs in April (20th to 23rd) were: the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition), International ICT Expo, the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition), the Hong Kong Houseware Fair, the Hong Kong International Home Textiles Fair, the Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair and the Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair. HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau (below in the photo) said that buyers from

the mainland and overseas grew 8%, to over 120,000. “The fairs bring at least a billion HKD to Hong Kong, not to mention the profits from trade orders and related business services”, said Mr Chau. Mr Chau said that the HKTDC’s April fairs recorded a growth in buyers from BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and Chinese mainland) and VISTA countries (Vietnam, Indonesia, South Africa, Turkey and Argentina). “The seven fairs drew a total of over 60,000 BRIC and VISTA buyers, a 15% increase over last year. The HKTDC has strengthened our promotions in these emerging markets, inviting more buyers to Hong Kong. In this way, we hope local traders may have more opportunities to enter these markets.” Overall, a positive market outlook is expected in the electronics, houseware and gift industries. More than 80% of the respondents believed that the market is much better, better than, or the same as last year. Among them, over 40% are forecasting double-digit growth in the coming year. The survey also predicted a comeback in the US and European markets. The interviewed exhibitors believed that the US and Europe will have the biggest growth in the retail market. Buyers are prepared to pay more, given the renminbi appreciation and rise in labour costs and raw materials. Nearly 60% of interviewed buyers expect the average unit price of products will go up this year.

The survey also predicted a comeback in the US and European markets.

FERIAS: HEIMTEXTIL

FERIAS / TRADE FAIRS: HEIMTEXTIL

The images Some photos (all of them by Textiles para el Hogar) illustrate our report about Heimtextil 2011. There is a block that tries to reflect the trends area, that was by the way decorated with kilometres of ropes whose smell expanded throughout near corridors. Some shots show different parts of the fair, with more or less

people. In such a big venue it is interesting to check how different flows of public are, depending on the hall and the time of the day. The presence of this magazine has been also had in mind as the visitor had the opportunity to take it at the trade press area in the Galleria (between halls 8 and 9). This year designers changed their place in the fair; they moved to Hall 4. Heimtextil is a must for (re)discovering materials. Look for the booth with hard big round stones; they are really made of... soft felt. Or the special area between halls 5 and 6 with an exhibition on the possibilities of an African bark. Many special areas and exhibitions are held every year in Frankfurt; in our report you’ll find as an example the Utopia show (Hall 11) and the Sleep Factory in Hall 8. But of course the main dish consists of thousands of companies that show their products and services to visitors; some with a simple but catching stand (Pratko); others carefully showing their projects and fabrics to the press (Baumann Dekor)... A real world indeed.

TRADE FAIRS: HEIMTEXTIL

GOOD IMPRESSIONS A new edition of Heimtextil was been held in Frankfurt/Main (Germany) from 12 to 15 January 2011. Two are the most important features we want to remark in these lines: we have felt an optimistic mood in booths and corridors and on the other hand the reorganisation of the layout of the fair has improved the flows of visitors and has given place to a more compact fair, so the sensations have been positive even during the third day of the fair. That was not usually the case in the late editions of the meeting.

The official speakers state that the occupied surface and the number of exbilitors have increased regarding those registered in 2010, as we’ll see in this report. The fact is that some of the halls have not been used this time. The explanation is that the re-grouping of different type of manufacturers and companies has led to a more efficient distribution and use of space.

of international visitors, 87%, reached a new high. The European nations with the most exhibitors were Germany, Turkey, Italy, Spain, France and Great Britain, and from overseas China, India, Pakistan, Taiwan and USA.

Talking about Spain it must be said that its number of exhibitors has increased a little bit regarding last year. In general they were happy with the visits and orders they had. Good news at last!

"With an increase of more than 5% in the number of expositors from the previous exposition and a 3% increase of visitors coming from 136 different countries (there were 120 in 2010), the resonance of the world's largest trade fair for textile decoration and commercial use has been a success," summarizes Detlef Braun, a member of the Messe management in Frankfurt. "Our bottom line takes into account not only the quantitative aspects but also the qualitative values of Heimtextil, rated positively by expositors and visitors.

The Heimtextil Insider counted on the participation of 5,400 German interior designers. "This figure represents more than half of the companies that specialize in interior design in Germany", said Henning Cronemeyer, the manager of the Central Association of Rooms and Facilities. "Our members have brought fresh ideas and new products to the composition of walls, ceilings, decoration materials, furniture upholstery and UV protection. We have had a positive response to the program."

The growing importance of eco-textiles More than 73,000 visitors specializing in interior design, architecture, design and commercial facilities met in Frankfurt. This was an increase of 2,300 professionals from the previous exposition in 2010. This increase comes from abroad: 47,700 experts visited the fair. The top ten nations that attended were Italy, Turkey, Great Britain, China, Spain, USA, France, The Netherlands, Poland and The Russian Federation. The influx of visitors was accompanied by a marked increase in the participation of exhibitors: 2,601 companies from 60 different countries participated in Heimtextil in 2011 (compared to 2,469 in 2010). The rate

Sustainability was a central theme this year at Heimtextil. With a wide range of products and events, the show responded to growing consumer interest in this sector. Lectures in the areas "Let's talk about it!" and "Let's have a look - Interior Competence by AIT" and the special presentation "Green Exhibition - Welcome to Utopia" showed a wide range of sustainable approaches to textile products for the home and for decoration. The new "Green Directory" also aroused great interest. It lists exhibitors whose textile supply features high quality organic products or sustainable manufacturing.

TRADE FAIRS: HEIMTEXTIL

Heimtextil Trends 2011/2012 Heimtextil’s staging of international trends for the next season was, as usual, one of the major points of attraction for designers in the industry, from the purchasing and trade sectors. Under the heading "Reconnect", experts from six countries formulated basics trends with four main motifs using modern textiles. A British-style office "The Future Laboratory" presented a display of trends highly acclaimed by visitors and exhibitors.

Growth of textiles for commercial use "Contract Creations" For architects, interior architects and planners, the area "Let's have a look - Interior Competence by AIT”, was the venue for lectures and presentations regarding contract jobs. In this sector, Heimtextil's board presented the "Contract Guide", a clear guide for this segment. Awards were bestowed for excellent ideas and product quality, such as the “Young Contract Creations Award: Upholstery”, for the new generation of designers, as well as other awards such as the "“Innovationspreis Architektur Textil Objekt” (the innovation award for textile architecture) and the “Bettenfachhändler des Jahres” (best bed vendor of the year).

"Heimtextil goes City" receives 2,500 visitors "Heimtextil goes City" (a collective promotion of the Frankfurt Association of Interior Designers) in its seventh year attracted some 2,500 people. More than 25 businesses, galleries and public institutions participated in the promotion and presented the latest textile developments and innovations to a large audience at the exhibition. The next "Heimtextil" will be held from the 11th to the 14th of January 2012.

As is usually the case with Heimtextil, special care was taken with finding the right setting for this fair. This year it was organised under the title “Reconnect” and offered four distinct concepts. It was one of the main points of attraction for designers and the commercial sector, as well as being an ideal information point for industry professionals. Despite the currently unstable global economic situation, early figures reflected a positive revival for business at the fair. Both exhibitors and visitors

expressed satisfaction with their participation in Heimtextil. The fair responded to the growing interest in the “green” sector by making it one of the central themes in this year's Heimtextil. Various events were promoted which showed a wide range of approaches in using sustainable products for home textiles. Consumers are increasingly attentive to environmental regulations, and ecological textiles are growing in importance. More and more manufacturers are reacting to this interest by making an effort to ensure that their products and production techniques are rooted in efficient energy use and green source materials; this is despite the sharp rise in the price of cotton during 2010, primarily caused by high demand from China, which has pushed up the price of the product. Buyers seek products that have an added value (whether for the use of organic materials, the “bio” process, the natural dyes or the design of the fabric). In short, they seek uniqueness. Most remarkable was the careful presentation of collections with the use of new communication techniques which combine colour, motifs and coordinated arrangement.

¡REFRESQUEMOS LA MEMORIA! Quino Prades

BOOSTING SALES

LET’S REFRESH OUR MEMORIES! Quino Prades

Visual merchandising is fundamental for all retail outlets, since it not only helps to boost sales substantially but it also improves the image and positioning of the business. It complements the general way in which stores or sales outlets are organized and makes it possible to attend to customers more swiftly and more efficiently. This is why visual merchandising and window dressing are currently more important than ever before. Let us not forget that, through their activities, experts in visual merchandising and window dressing: 1. Save time for customers when it comes to choosing what they are looking for. 2. Offer consumers a better insight into the most trend-setting ideas each season. 3. Familiarize consumers with a business’ products and retail setting as a means of fostering customer loyalty. The activities of a visual merchandiser are directed at making buying a memorable experience for customers. Because the world of merchandising is a broad complex one, in my articles I plan to focus on those factors that seem to me to be the most overlooked, even though they are essential for a retail outlet. More specifically, on this occasion I will talk about the façade, sign and outdoor lighting of a store, because the external image and shop

52 | Textiles para el Hogar 256

BOOSTING SALES

The challenge is to inspire customers every time they enter a store, thanks to its unique singularity.

windows (see page 50 of issue 245 of Textiles para el Hogar) are what identify it, providing initial visual contact between customers and the store. As a result, they must be kept up to date to take into account the latest trends. The tendency today is to design a store working from the outside inward, using different methods to infuse each one with its own distinctive personality. In this way a store is created that entices consumers into it. These are innovative times, where we seek to bring originality and variety to each store. The challenge is to inspire customers every time they enter a store, thanks to its unique singularity.

The Façade If possible, it should be clean and covered in neutral materials, easily integrating the sign, shop window and lighting to create a harmonious ensemble. In this way, a far more modern avantgarde image of the business is transmitted. If, on the other hand, the aim is to give it a more classic look, the above also holds true. To achieve these effects, different materials and textures can be used: steel, porcelain tiles, compact cement panels, laminate boards, paint finishes, wood etc. The colour of the entrance will depend on the store’s architecture and décor (subject to the possible existence of municipal regulations governing this issue) and the business’ corporate colours. The shop window must blend perfectly into the front or “face” of the store and its size will vary depending on the type of store and products to be displayed.

The shop window frame must fit in as harmoniously as possible with the décor of the whole ensemble. Depending on the position and format of the store’s sign, the architecture of the façade, and type of store, the lighting should be incorporated in such a way that it brings out the best of the whole ensemble.

The Store’s Sign It must be attractive and, in all cases, reflect the personality of the store or its brand image. It should be self-luminous or illuminated, and it must be placed in a position that is easily visible from all possible angles. Signs can incorporate many different types of materials, colours and typographies. The aim is for customers to be able to identify it quickly and easily. The typography should be clear and leave nothing in doubt so as to avoid any unwanted ambiguity. As I mentioned at the beginning, the world of window dressing and visual merchandising is obviously a very extensive complex one depending on the type of store, product, speciality etc. Different strategies and studies must be contemplated to suit each specific case, but the dual end goal is the same in all cases: to achieve an evident rise in sales and position the business on the market. Before taking a decision, it is almost indispensable to count on professional assistance. www.quinoprades.com

Contract sector to be major feature of Feria Hábitat Valencia 2011 The 2011 edition of Feria Hábitat Valencia (2024 September) will be featuring a new space designed to boost the contract segment of the industry, one of the lines of business that has grown the most in the last few years and offers the most scope for the interiors industry. The space is being titled “Hábitat Contract”, a project that intends to be a promotional tool for all companies that already operate in this area or aspire to. “Hábitat Contract” will be an innovative space with a different style of staging that will enable exhibitors at Feria Hábitat Valencia 2011 to show their dedicated contract products to Spanish and international specifiers. This space will be an integral part of the cutting edge and contemporary content of Spain's major interiors event. These are some of Feria Hábitat Valencia's new initiatives. The organisers are putting the final touches to a fair that will bring together the biggest ever offering of furniture, lighting, decor, home textiles, outdoor living, bedrooms, upholstery and kitchens. Spanish and international companies have already confirmed that they will be exhibiting, boosting the optimistic outlook for this upcoming show.
