Welcome from the Constable As I write, we are in the second week of August and, once again, the summer weather has been a bit changeable with perhaps a little less rain than we have seen in some previous years.

As if to prove the point, in the UK this week there are record temperatures predicted, but in St Peter rain has just started falling. However, I hope you have all had an enjoyable summer because even if you have stayed on the Island, Jersey has a lot to offer. There are our beaches, our countryside and our history that ranges from the burial chamber at Hougue Bie to the German Occupation.

This year, we celebrated 80 years since the Island was liberated from German Occupation. As usual, there were celebrations in St Helier but also each Parish marked the anniversary. In St Peter, we celebrated Liberation in several ways. We raised the flag on the Parish Hall early on the morning of 9th May, there was an Act of Remembrance at the Church on the Saturday morning, and I would like to thank the Children of St George’s School for singing during the event. Finally, we held an Afternoon Tea with entertainment on the Sunday at the Youth and Community Centre.

Thanks to the owners of several World War II vehicles who brought them along to display outside the Centre, and to Vic and Sandra Le Riche for their beautifully decorated vintage car.

Vic and Sandra also kindly looked after three visiting French Mayors from our twinned town St Hilaire De Harcourt who had been invited by the Government to the Liberation celebrations.

Despite 80 years having passed and fewer of those who endured the Occupation being with us, it is surprising that artifacts and unknown facts are still coming to light. As part of the Liberation celebrations, we held an exhibition of items relating

to the Occupation in the Parish Hall. I have recently been given some family items for safe keeping which include an Occupation sketchbook belonging to my late Aunt, Joyce Le Ruez. Within the sketchbook are scenes from the Occupation including images of some of the slave workers brought here by the Occupying forces and who endured terrible conditions. One shows a slave worker looking for food greeting my grandmother. These sketches have never been displayed before and Joyce risked imprisonment or worse had her sketchbook been discovered by the Germans.

The other item of note was a bag made by a former Parishioner, Mr King, who was interned at Biberach camp in Germany during the war. The bag was entirely made from scraps of wool using a piece of barbed wire as a needle. Mr King again took a great risk doing this. The Germans searched several times for the bag but never found it.

It was a privilege for the Parish to have this on display in our exhibition.

For the first time in several years our Summer Fete was not rained off and I was very pleased that so many of you attended and I hope you had an enjoyable day. This year, I looked after the Bottle Stall. We got off to a slow start but soon there were queues of people trying their luck at winning one of the more desirable bottles. I was

very pleased that the stall raised just over £500 for the Youth Club. It was a great day and thank you to all those involved in its organisation.

Fundraising Walk Well done to former St Peter Constable Tom du Feu who walked from St Brelade’s Parish Hall to the SS Vega memorial on 13th May, honouring the ship that brought Red Cross aid to the Island after the Occupation, raising £3,000 for Jersey food banks.

The money was split between The Grace Trust, St Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army’s Pantry Store – a new subsidised shop helping Islanders “shop with dignity”.

I could not finish this article without a mention of the Battle of Flowers – a Jersey tradition for over 100 years.

Despite uncertainties over finances, the Battle went ahead in a new format around the streets of St Helier, with no charge to watch the event. It was so pleasing to see the two St Peter’s floats and a marvellous achievement by our Parish Battle of Flowers Association. My 7-month-old granddaughter saw her first Battle, although I suspect she may not remember it! I do think this new format is the way forward and one which will enable the Battle to continue for many more years.

Unbelievable to think that, when I next write to you, we will be building up to Christmas. For those of you who have not done so before, please take the opportunity to visit the annual Christmas Tree Festival in the Parish Church which takes place from Saturday 7th until Thursday 18th December this year.

It really is spectacular to see so many trees lighting up the Church and is always popular with the younger children.

As in previous years, we will also be holding two Christmas Lunches for our Senior Citizens at St Brelade’s Bay Hotel. If you are 65 years or above, please contact the Parish Hall to put your name on the list. Places are limited, so please get in touch early to avoid disappointment.

This year’s Battle of Flowers, held on 8th and 9th August, marked a significant shift from its traditional Victoria Avenue route to a more intimate town-centre experience.

The parade featured 19 floats, street entertainers and a fireworks finale, all free to the public.

In what started out as a year of uncertainty for the Battle of Flowers, St Peter’s Battle of Flowers Association emerged successful, captivating crowds with their two imaginative floats - “An English Country Garden” and “The Veg Patch.” Despite the parade’s scaled-down format and new route through the heart of St Helier, our creativity and community spirit flourished.

The English Country Garden float was a celebration of timeless elegance, featuring a secluded lawn with table and chairs, a stunning pollinator patch with a mix of wildflowers and a tree covered pond with family of ducks. The float was also adorned with several harestailed wild animals to complete the look.

Battle this year extended beyond the parades, inspiring stunning floral shop front installations across town. Businesses like Santander Work Café, De Gruchy and Fine & Country partnered with St Peter to recreate the float’s theme in their displays, transforming storefronts into immersive garden scenes that delighted passers-by.

Meanwhile, Tracy Pallot and the Juniors’ The Veg Patch float brought a playful and vibrant twist to the festivities. The float celebrated Jersey’s agricultural roots, with its oversized vegetables, scarecrow and sunflower.

Hugo’s restaurant embraced the theme with a lively shop front installation featuring lush greens and colourful vegetable motifs, reflecting their culinary ethos and adding a cheerful splash to Halkett Street.

Both of our floats were pulled by classic tractors for this year’s parade which enhanced the overall look - thank you to Vic le Riche and Richard Lee - your help was greatly appreciated.

St Peter’s Battle of Flowers Association embraced the new format, proving that creativity and community spirit can thrive even in times of change. I would like to thank the committee and their families for their continued support and our build teams who have worked tirelessly over the last few months in the run up to Battle week. Thank you also to all the volunteers who gave their time freely to help with picking, glueing and sticking flowers, and finally to all who came out to support our Parish and Battle of Flowers in town this year. It was a truly magical experience!

PARISH OFFICE NEWS Liberation 80 Celebrations We had some lovely celebrations in the Parish over the Liberation weekend which were enjoyed by Parishioners young and old. A gallery of photos of the events featured in the previous edition of Les Clefs.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers who helped with the Tea Party and the Occupation Memorabilia Exhibition. We could not have managed without the assistance of the Village Tea Room Team and St Peter’s Youth Club at the Tea Party.

Thanks also to the musical entertainment provided by the Jersey Ukulele Club and to Dave Mustow and his team who organised the display of Military Vehicles. Dave also provided invaluable help to us with the Memorabilia Display which was of great interest to all who visited.

Without all the volunteers who gave up their time to assist us, and to the people who kindly agreed for their artefacts to be displayed, these events could not have been held, so we are truly grateful.

What is being proposed The Investing in Jersey programme will introduce a dedicated Capital Investment Fund, to be used solely for capital and infrastructure projects. This fund will operate separately from the annual revenue budget that pays for public services. The main advantage of this approach is greater certainty. By setting aside funding over a longer period, projects can be planned and delivered in a more predictable way, ensuring a stable and steady pipeline of construction projects. The funds will come from existing capital budgets, including about £80 million a year currently set aside. All expenditure will continue to be approved by the States Assembly.

What it means for Islanders The programme is designed to support a number of important areas:

Investing In Jersey Housing, roads, schools, sports and leisure facilities, utilities and community spaces all play an essential role in everyday life in Jersey - so we need to ensure they stay up-to-date, effective and in good condition.

To achieve this, the Government of Jersey has launched Investing in Jersey: 2026–2050, which sets out a 25-year plan to improve Jersey’s infrastructure and public realm. A key aspect is a change in how we manage our capital spending – how we fund building and improvements to physical infrastructure.

• Housing – More affordable homes, including family houses, retirement units and supported accommodation. Schemes such as shared equity will help more people buy homes, and improved rental options for locals and key workers.

• Public services – Improvements to school buildings, youth facilities and further education sites, including a new Highlands College campus in St Helier.

• Transport and utilities – Upgrades to roads, footpaths, water supply and drainage networks, including the goal of extending mains water and drainage to every home where feasible.

• Community and public spaces – Investment in parks, sports facilities and public areas, with a focus on accessibility and supporting community use.

How capital spending works now At present, capital projects - such as new school buildings, road upgrades and public realm improvements - are paid for from the overall government budget. The same budget also funds our day-to-day services such as health, education and social support. In practical terms, this means that all government spending, whether it’s a hospital, a salary or a road resurfacing project, comes from the same financial pot. As a result, major infrastructure projects often have to compete for funding against other immediate priorities. This can make long-term planning difficult and sometimes leads to delays or deferrals, even for important projects.

Housing development in St John

The Investing in Jersey programme will not deliver everything at once, but it sets out a clear, sensible plan for more sustainable, affordable and coordinated investment in our infrastructure.

By separating major capital projects from the pressures of the annual budget, it gives Jersey a stronger foundation to improve the quality infrastructure and public realm for future generations of Islanders.

News from …your local flying charity Enabling the disadvantaged and the disabled of all ages to share the exhilaration and fulfilment of flying

Helping Wings and Wetwheels Jersey joint event We were blessed with the perfect weather for our joint event on Sunday 13th July. The day started at St Helier Yacht Club where our joint patron, His Excellency Sir Jeremy Kyd, joined us for breakfast met our guests.

After breakfast, our guests divided into two groups: one group headed to Jersey Aero Club for a flight around the island with our incredible team of volunteer pilots, while the other group set off for an exhilarating boat trip with Wetwheels Jersey and their incredible team of volunteer skippers. After lunch, the groups swapped, making sure everyone had the chance to enjoy both air and sea adventures.

During the day, we were thrilled to have the visit from Ports of Jersey Airport Rescue Fire Fighting Service - always a highlight at our events.

Everyone left with a certificate signed by their pilots and a goodie bag from both charities.

We are delighted to be able to work with Wetwheels to give our local families a fun day with long-lasting memories.

So many people, all volunteers, are involved in making these special days happen and we are very grateful for their repeated kindness and generosity.

What we have been up to…

This year’s Summer Fête was a real highlight in our calendar- a vibrant event that brought the community together.

We were proud to give young people meaningful roles in the planning and delivery of the day on behalf of the Parish. From organising and running stalls to performing live on stage, they brought energy, creativity and a real sense of ownership to the event, together with the amazing Summer Fete Committee. For many, it was their first time singing in front of an audience or managing a stall.

The Fête also gave local stallholders the chance to fundraise, share their work and connect with others. This helped strengthen our links across the community, making the event not just a fun day out, but a space for collaboration and support.

The Fête would not have been the same without the support of our brilliant local partners. A big thank you to Kismet Cabana who were a massive hit, keeping everyone well-fed and refreshed with their delicious food and drinks. Damien’s famous carousel brought joy to children and adults alike, spinning all day long and adding that classic funfair magic.

The Battle of Flowers Association served beautiful homemade cakes and tea — the perfect spot to catch up with friends and enjoy a moment in the shade. And of course, we’re so grateful to our wonderful stallholders, many of whom return year after year to support this much-loved event.

Thank you to everyone who came along, took part, volunteered and made the day such a success. Events like this truly show the heart of our community in action.

This year’s Junior residential was held on 19th-20th May at the Queens Silver Jubilee Activity Centre. We enjoyed a fantastic weekend filled with activities like den building, playing games in the dark, tie-dying, painting shells to mark World Ocean Day, combining art and environmental awareness and a special surprise visit from Michel’s Ice Cream Van. One of the most memorable and challenging highlights was the high rope adventure, delivered by the JYS Outdoor learning Team, a challenge that helped build resilience amongst our young people.

On 18th July, St Peter’s Youth Club held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) whereby each year a young person is chosen to receive the Dianna Renault Trophy. The Dianna Renault Trophy recognises dedication, service, and impact and was won by Alex De Feu. Alex leads by example, showing reliability, maturity and a keen sense of community spirit. His contribution has been consistent and wholehearted, and it is clear that the young people and the wider team have benefited hugely from his involvement over the last few years.

We are looking forward to…

I am also pleased to share that we have secured a £1000 grant from JT to enhance Colin’s Corner, our outdoor space.

This project has been running every Thursday throughout the summer holidays, including painting the fencing, installing new planters and creating a beautiful, nature-inspired willow den.

These improvements will not only brighten the space but also give our young people the chance to develop practical skills, ownership and pride in their environment. Please make sure you pop own to have a look.

By the time you read this, our long-awaited young worker trip in August will have taken place. At the time of writing, we are almost ready to go! We have an exciting itinerary planned, packed with unforgettable experiences for our young people. Highlights include a full day at Thorpe Park, a visit to the immersive and interactive Bubble Planet Experience, and a night out to see Mamma Mia in the West End. We are also going to be exploring Camden Market, soaking up the sights and giving young people a chance to experience travelling on the London underground.

It promises to be a fun, enriching and memorable adventure - a reward for all the hard work and commitment our senior young workers have shown over the past year fundraising for this trip.

Senior Citizens' Club The Senior Citizens club has been part of Parish life for many years.

More recently, the baton has been passed on from Rosemary Vibert, who has taken time to organise and liaise with members to ensure the smooth running of the monthly get-togethers over the last seven years. Rosemary now has a clear dining room table which is no longer full of paperwork, and she now has the time and space to pursue one of her hobbies of completing puzzles.

Earlier this year, St Peter’s Twinning Association held its Annual General Meeting in the Parish Hall.

Both the Chairman and Secretary wished to stand down but were persuaded by the Connétable to continue in post as he was hoping to invite the Maire of St Hilaire to the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Liberation to be held in St Helier on 9th May. It transpired that other Parishes were also inviting their respective Twinning Associations’ Maires, and the Twinning Association members would be required to help with hosting the visitors over several days.

The Senior Citizens Club meets on second Thursday of each month at St Peter’s Parish Hall for talks and activities, along with a cuppa and a chat. New members are always welcome.

Occupation Exhibition at St John’s Parish Hall

In the event, the Maire of St Hilaire, Mons Jacky Bouvet, accepted the invitation and also brought two of his assistants, Mme Séguin and Mons Jean-Luc Garnier, for the occasion. They arrived on the Thursday morning and were met on arrival by Vic and Sandra Le Riche, members of the Association, who took them to the wonderful Occupation Exhibition at St John’s Parish Hall, as well as hosting them for lunch and a tour of the Island. In the evening, the guests were entertained by the Connétable for dinner.

The following day, the French visitors were looked after by Government officials and joined in the celebrations in town.

On the Saturday, the Secretary met them at their hotel and took them to St Peter’s Occupation Exhibition where they met Parish Dignitaries and the Connétable, before being taken on an island tour for the rest of the day, including lunch at Gorey. Before departing for St Malo, the Maire expressed his thanks for the welcome and hospitality given by the Government and the Parish during their stay.

In June, the St Peter’s Twinning Association took part in the Twinning Games, hosted by the Parish of Grouville. The team of Vic and Sandra Le Riche, Anne Gouédard and David Drage, and their counterparts from St Hilaire, did very well and won the pétanque competition. The day was rounded off with the team joining other members for an evening dinner at the Hotel Ambassadeur.

La Fête des Rouaisons in Normandy

In June, a 20-strong group from Jersey took part in the Fête des Rouaisons in the town of Bricquebec in Normandy, between Carteret and Valognes.

Members of the Société Jersiaise Language Section performed poetry and songs as a group. Local dance group Les Chaboleurs entertained with a selection of their Norman dances accompanied by musicians, which was much enjoyed by the locals, probably for their informality and a contrast to the large, traditionally costumed, very impressive Norman folkdance group, Le P'tit Capé d'Brix, who are hoping to come to Jersey next year.

The music was exceptional, and a highlight was certainly the group Lihou performing a concert of Channel Island songs.

Bricquebec has Viking origins, settled in the 10th Century, and the venue for the fête was the 12th Century château. The Norman Dukes might have designed it as a fortification for keeping people out, but its town centre location was a perfect site for welcoming us all.

We certainly enjoyed the weekend and hope to welcome our Norman and Guernsey friends to next year’s fête in Jersey. We hope many of our Jersey communities will come to watch and take part. We also have the upcoming celebrations of our Norman heritage for the millennium of William the Conqueror to look forward to in 2027.

This Norman language festival has been operating for many years, the venue alternating between Jersey, Guernsey and mainland Normandy. Covid disrupted the annual cycle and there was a gap of several years, so this was our first experience of the Fête for many of us.

Les Chaboleurs (The Shufflers) are a group of dancers, a branch of the Jèrriais language section of La Société Jersiaise, who practise once a month and perform occasionally at local cultural events. No dancing skills are required, just a desire to share our local traditions and some enthusiasm!

This year’s fête was organised by Nicolas Abraham and the Federation of Norman Language Associations, so our Norman languages featured strongly in the form of stories, poems and songs. Stories were shared in Norman and Jèrriais around the atmospheric grounds of the town's château. Jèrriais teacher Charlie Le Maistre’s wonderfully dramatic account of the Legend of La Hougue Bie was enjoyed and understood by all.

Brighter Futures Shines Through the Summer

Preventative Care That Works

This summer, Brighter Futures has brought colour, connection and care to the community with a series of vibrant projects that supported wellbeing and cared for families.

At the heart of all our projects is Brighter Futures' commitment to early, preventative care. Its work supports not just individual families, but the broader community.

From creating a river of orange during the Walk on the Bright Side to experiencing the therapeutic benefits of coastal surf at Brighter Futures Shores event in partnership with Healing Waves, our summer activities delivered moments of joy whilst reinforcing the importance of early intervention and support.

The common thread of our projects is empowerment: helping people feel seen, heard and capable of change. This summer has demonstrated that, when families are supported, entire communities grow stronger.

Take a Walk on the Bright Side was a community event. Participants donned bright orange attire as they stepped out in solidarity with Brighter Futures' mission to support families in Jersey.

Surf, Sun and Support: Beach Day

We are a Jersey charity that supports parents, carers, families and young people to thrive. We help more than 150 families per week by supporting the main carer with a variety of free programmes and courses, combined with co-ordinator support. We partnered with Healing Waves to deliver a unique Beach Day experience, blending the fun of summer with the therapeutic benefits of the sea. Sponsored by Jersey Water, the event offered families supported by Brighter Futures the chance to take part in adaptive surf lessons, led by trained instructors.

What we do:

Children enjoyed surf lessons, and, with parents and carers, they enjoyed a day filled with beach games, face painting and freshly cooked pizza, served by Pizza Box. The beach was awash with laughter and smiling faces.

How can you help?

Where Families Flourish: Gardening Group Brighter Futures’ summer gardening sessions at the RJAHS showground offered a quieter form of outdoor engagement. Held weekly, the sessions invited families to come together to play, learn and grow. Children and parents explored planting, nurturing and harvesting…and picnics!

2. We offer positive mental health and wellbeing programmes, and 3. We provide Second-Chance Learning programmes.

It costs £8,000 per year to support one Brighter Futures family. Although we receive some government funding, we rely on fundraising to meet our £1 million plus annual costs. We also enjoy welcoming visitors to Communicare and The Bridge who would like to find out more about our work.

Scout Group

As you are reading this, we will have started our Autumn Term, which has followed an unbelievably busy Summer Term thanks to perfect weather for every Wednesday evening session. Here is a brief summary of what we got up to.

Beavers (aged 6 to 8) The Beaver Colonies enjoyed a good mix of onsite and offsite activities after the Easter break with activities including bug hunting, nature art, creative activities at the beach, fire lighting, learning navigations skills, hiking around the lanes of St Peter, a session on the ropes course and Power Fan at Valley Adventures, a surfing taster with Le Port Surf School, and finished off with Water Fun on the lawn at St George's School. The Beavers also had a great overnight 'Horrible Histories' themed camp at the Island Scout Centre.

activities included learning semaphore, teamwork challenges, a scavenger hunt, and RIB rides in St Brelade’s Bay.

Cubs (aged 8 to 10)

Our two Cub Packs were kept equally busy and also made the most of the good weather and light nights with activities including fire lighting and cooking bacon, learning about Liberation Day and the Occupation, a taster session with Jersey Hockey, beach games, climbing and archery at Valley Adventures, muddy fun in Greve de Lecq Woods, a hike down the valley to the War Tunnels, and mega-SUPing with Absolute Adventures at St Brelade’s Bay. For the summer Cub Camp they headed out across the causeway to St Aubin’s Fort for two nights in July and

The Scout Troop continues to take the skills they learnt as Beavers and Cubs to the next level. In the Summer term they used their pioneering skills to set up rope bridges and built improvised shelters.

They have also carried out activities to benefit the Scouting community with some much-needed weeding at the Scout Centre, and helped out the eco-system and Jersey Trees for Life with Bug Hotel building and mulching at Adelina Woods.

The Scouts represented our Group at the Liberation Day Parade in St Helier in May, and not to be outdone they had two weekend camps. The first was focused on developing leadership skills, and the

second was an expedition camp where they hiked across the Island carrying everything they needed to be self-sufficient. For this camp they overnighted at the very basic but beautifully located L'Etacquerel Fort on the north coast.

Goodbye At the end of the summer term we bid a sad but fond farewell to two Scouting stalwarts Sarah and Dave who led our St George's Cub Pack.

Between them they had given 30+ years of service to Scouting in Jersey. Bravo!

Group Events Along with the Scouts attending the Liberation Day Parade we also joined the wider Island Scouting community for the annual St George’s Day Promise Renewal on a glorious Sunday afternoon on St Ouen’s beach, and the annual awards evening in the beautiful grounds of St Ouen’s Manor. At the start of June, we came together for our annual open evening where we put on a host of activities for all to have a go at including tomahawk throwing, s'mores making, human fruit machine, tin can alley, and a very popular inflatable slide.

New Members (Big and Small!)

We are always on the lookout for adults who are willing to help with our busy programme in any way they can. For the younger ones we have three intakes a year, which are at the start of each academic term. With over 100 young people in our Group, we have a waiting list for new members. We encourage any interested young people to register their interest. Community Beach Clean Boxes gifted to every Parish in Jersey

Plastic Free Jersey is an initiative that brings together individuals, groups, businesses and organisations to reduce the amount of plastic we use, inspiring environmental advocacy for a healthier ocean and island.

The Community Beach Clean Boxes are there for all members of the local community to use - schools, businesses, community groups, family groups and friends.

Although named ‘beach’ clean boxes, the hope is that these will be used for a much wider purpose by the community - helping to clear beaches, streets, parks, school grounds, country lanes, woodland wanders and coastal paths.

Plastic Free Jersey founding member, Sheena Brockie, said: “With an easily accessible ready-made kit, we would love for the community to work together to help keep Jersey’s countryside and beaches free from litter, especially the single use plastics which are so prevalent.

By encouraging people to get involved with a beach clean in their parish, we aim to raise awareness of the impact of plastic pollution on the local environment, empower people with the tools to do something about it, whilst fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Eighteen months ago, Plastic Free Jersey and the Channel Islands Co-operative Society in Jersey, created a tool for our community to use free of charge, as often as they like.

Please don’t forget to tag Plastic Free Jersey with any photos on social media!”

With generous funding from the Co-op Community Fund, Plastic Free Jersey created 12 Community Beach Clean Boxes, with one gifted to every parish. These are located in the Parish Halls and can be accessed by phoning or popping into your local Parish Hall.

Since their launch, the boxes have been borrowed many times, which means that our wonderful community is actively working to clean up plastic pollution cleaned up. Some parish boxes are used more than others, so we would like to raise awareness of the kit so that everyone arranging an event knows they can borrow them. If you are arranging a big event, you could consider borrowing more than one box, as needed.

Each Community Beach Clean Box contains the basics you’ll need to carry out a beach clean safely - bags and buckets to collect rubbish, gloves in a variety of sizes, a simple first aid kit, hand sanitizer, and a sharps box, as well as guidance on how to carry out a successful beach clean. You will also find Beach Clean Bingo cards in the boxes so that you can challenge yourselves to find all the items listed!

Plastic Free Jersey really hopes that together we can make a difference. We hope you have fun trying out our Beach Clean Boxes with your group soon!

Trees for Lives If you plant a lot of trees, you’ll need to carry out a lot of maintenance, which is exactly what Jersey Trees for Life does for most of the year. Those of you who have planted trees of your own are probably well aware of this.

O

ver summer and early autumn, competing species like bracken, bramble, bindweed, sticky plant and nettles can grow prolifically. Bracken is the poster child, rapidly engulfing banques, côtils and valleys Island wide.

While there’s nothing intrinsically bad about most competing species, they divert vital nutrients and water away from trees, slowing down growth. The problem is therefore most acute when whips and saplings (as opposed to larger trees) are overwhelmed by one or more of these interlopers, which can happen surprisingly quickly.

That’s why it’s so important to clear them and why Jersey Trees for Life and its volunteers spend so much time doing so at this time of year.

It's impossible to talk about maintenance without watering, especially after a dry summer (not that it’s the most complex facet of tree care). A thorough watering every 7-10 days is optimal, ensuring a deep soak into the roots – root hydration is key to successful growth.

Growing Forward

As global temperatures rise, treescapes will follow.

For Jersey, this means a long-term transition to more drought-tolerant species while the likes of beech, Scots pine and silver birch struggle. We shouldn’t write off our current crop too soon, though. Trees are famously resilient and can adapt to their environment by developing strategies primarily based on drought avoidance.

Mulching – removing existing plants from surrounding ground and adding a layer of woodchip or other (typically) organic matter – is another useful tool in the tree care kitbag. If you have the time and inclination, this technique is great for reducing weed growth, plus it helps soil to retain water and control its temperature. It even looks good.

Examples can be found at Adelina Wood and Val de la Mare, if you’re keen to see for yourself.

Avoidance is based on simply maximising intake and/or reducing water use. As water intake is a function of root surface area, trees can survive drought by evolving larger root systems. Conversely, to reduce water use they slow transpiration by manipulating their leaves with tactics such as restricting growth, forming a layer of hair or wax and even shedding (abscission).

As for pruning, autumn’s typically not the time, as trees are preparing for dormancy. As a rule, stick to winter (there are plenty of summery exceptions).

The ability of trees to adapt to changing conditions is remarkable but naturally has its limits, even if our native species aren’t going anywhere quite yet. This is why we need to look after today’s trees while preparing for tomorrow, managing the gradual transition to less familiar but more drought-tolerant species. Our future treescape is sure to look different.

I used to have hedgehogs in the garden, but not now.

On the UK mainland hedgehog numbers have declined by 30% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas. They are listed as “vulnerable” on the red list of mammals in danger of extinction.

T

he Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group has seen the decline mirrored here, through the reduction in admissions to the Group.

Increased human population means more houses encroaching on rural land.

They often have enclosed low maintenance gardens, with few places to nest.

Fewer wild areas, and fewer invertebrates means less food for hedgehogs.

Pesticides and rat poison leave poisoned carrion, which hedgehogs may eat, and it will kill them.

Our admissions have included hogs wrapped in netting, dog bites, one rescued from a cesspit, one shut in a garage, another trapped in an uncovered drainhole and one with a six-pack plastic ring around its middle.

Our mission is to rescue, treat and rehabilitate sick and injured hedgehogs before releasing them back into the wild.

Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so their eyesight is poor and they rely on their heightened sense of smell and hearing to find prey. Leading up to the branchage in July and September, we receive hogs with severe strimmer injuries. Very few can be saved.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

The summer months are birthing time. If a nest is disturbed by over exuberant gardeners, or mum is injured, abandoned or orphaned hoglets are unlikely to survive unless they are rescued and brought into care.

Long grass, undergrowth under hedges, leaf piles and compost heaps all make cosy nesting sites, as well as providing ideal conditions for the caterpillars, beetles, grubs and other insects that hedgehogs like to eat. In warm weather hedgehogs will just lie up in long grass and not use a nest.

The erosion of habitat, use of pesticides, and global warming are all playing a part in the decline.

This is a life-saver particularly in hot dry spells when the ground is too hard for them to dig for natural food.

• Ensure ponds or swimming pools have escape routes, such as • Garden access can be created with a 13cm hole in fences, gates or walls. Hogs must be able to roam.

• Supplement their natural diet, particularly in dry weather and

through winter with cat or small size dog kibble. In mild winters Jersey hedgehogs only hibernate for short periods if at all.

• Never give mealworms, sunflower seeds, peanuts, and definitely no milk and bread.

2023 Survey St Brelade appears to be the hedgehog capital of Jersey, where we know a lot of residents regularly feed their hedgehogs. Sadly, it is also a hot spot for road deaths, particularly near the Rugby Club, the Airport Road opposite the entrance to Lakeside, and Red Houses. It featured the highest number of recorded sightings in the survey.

St Mary which is less lit up and has more wild areas for hogs to roam after dark had the least sightings in the survey (130 in St Brelade, only 10 in St Mary).

St Saviour, St Helier and St Peter recorded the next highest numbers of sightings (in that order).

The local authorities are advised not to respond for, during the 24 hours’ grace given by the Germans, units of the Royal Navy, including two County-class heavy cruisers (HMS Norfolk and HMS Suffolk are temporarily but conveniently positioned at Portsmouth) with escorting destroyers will be despatched to provide both resistance to any invading naval forces and anti-aircraft cover against any incursions by the Luftwaffe. Although the German Navy possesses modern and sophisticated warships it does not, in 1940, possess enough of them to threaten Britain’s dominance of the seas.

Despite the Kriegsmarine’s interest, surrender demands have been received on both Islands from the area’s Luftwaffe commander, Generaloberst von Richthofen, and

Although those attackers flew from an airfield near Paris, Heinkel bombers are now based at Querqueville near Cherbourg and Pleurtuit near Dinard, just ten minutes’ flight from the Islands).

Norfolk and Suffolk sail from Portsmouth. The fast Countyclass cruisers, with their distinctive high freeboard and three funnels, bear a passing resemblance to ocean liners and although heavily armed with eight 8-inch guns, they are lightly armoured and possess little specific anti-aircraft armament.

The appearance of Norfolk and Suffolk and their attendant destroyers off the Islands is reported by German aerial reconnaissance. Schuster has no forces capable of dealing

with 8-inch gun cruisers and confers with von Richthofen. The invasion must be postponed, he reasons. Von Richthofen is scornful. His attitude towards the Kriegsmarine is one of cordial loathing.

Von Richthofen is one of Hitler’s favourites and, in February 1943, he will be appointed Germany’s youngest ever Generalfeldmarschall. He insists that if the Channel Islands authorities fail to respond to his demands, they, and their supposed protectors of the Royal Navy, should be attacked without mercy. He proposes supplementing his force of Heinkel He-111 medium bombers with Junkers Ju-87B Stukas, the screaming gull-winged dive-bombers that created terror during the Blitzkrieg across Europe.

With 12 hours before the ultimatum to the Islanders expires, von Richthofen assembles his air fleet; three squadrons of He-111 bombers and two squadrons of Stukas flown from Paris.

Schuster and Lindau are nervous. The fighting spirit of the Royal Navy is well known. But von Richthofen ignores their objections and his air forces take off into the setting sun.

HMS Norfolk and HMS Suffolk are ten miles south of Alderney approaching at 25 knots the Little Russel on Guernsey’s east coast. The cruisers, more used to patrolling the world’s oceans, are line astern, their commanders wary of the unfamiliar waters with their swirling tides and barely concealed reefs.

The Stukas swoop out of the dusk. The warships are slow to react, despite being at Action Stations. The Stuka pilots are well practised at their craft, plummeting vertically like screeching gannets towards their prey. A deadly hail of 500-kilogram bombs hurtles towards the cruisers; the bombs have whistles fitted to their fins to ensure that the intended recipients know just what to expect. Norfolk is the first to be hit, the Stukas seemingly immune to the barrage of anti-aircraft fire directed towards them from the destroyers. The 10,000 ton cruiser shudders under the impact and slows, gravely wounded. Suffolk, so far unscathed, swerves to avoid her injured consort.

The Junkers Ju-87, the fearsome dive bombers that created a whole new style of airborne warfare

The Royal Navy’s big guns are useless against concerted air attacks (in 1941 the Japanese Air Force will sink the battleship Prince of Wales and battle cruiser Repulse) and the attackers are too fleet to be deterred.

Despite the lively barrage put up by the escorting destroyers the cruisers are now both hit and on fire. Norfolk is almost stopped in the water and is down by the head. Suffolk is now circling her, barely under control, her bridge has suffered a direct hit, killing her captain and navigating officer. On after control and with little room to manoeuvre, Suffolk, which draws more than 20 feet, runs aground on the Platte Fougere reef and comes to a shuddering stop, immediately heeling over. The destroyers close to assist but come under further bombardment from more Stukas and He-111s.

With a similar mix of high explosives and incendiaries, other bombers devastate St Peter Port and St Sampson.

With Norfolk and Suffolk reduced to sinking, smoking hulks, the remaining Royal Navy vessels hurry off into the last remnants of a fiery sunset.

The Royal Navy’s attempt to prevent the invasion of Jersey and Guernsey causes the loss two heavy cruisers and a destroyer, severely damaged in the Stuka assaults, sunk by its own consorts. Altogether more than a hundred RN officers and men die in the futile defence of the Islands.

German casualties are light: three Stukas shot down into the sea and a He-111 damaged by anti-aircraft fire crash-lands into Guernsey’s power station on the Northside at St Sampson’s.

In London, no-one dares tell the prime minister ‘I told you so’.

The foregoing, of course, didn’t happen, but even if it had, the Occupation would have evolved much as it did.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Jersey Record Fair which will be held at St Peter’s Parish Hall on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October.

The annual 2-day event brings hundreds of music fans to the Parish with the hope and excitement of finding rare and collectible records to add to their collections.

Each year, tens of thousands of records are available from all genres and artists including rock n’ roll, punk, reggae, heavy metal, jazz, Progressive, soul, blues, new wave indie plus many, many others.

To celebrate our 75th anniversary, all our members were invited to an afternoon tea at Greenhills Hotel. Those of us who were able to attend enjoyed scones, jam and cream with plenty of cups of tea. It was a lovely afternoon thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

For our June meeting, Philippa Knight described the vital work of the charity Channel Islands Air Search - the Lifeboats’ eyes in the sky. This was an interesting insight into a volunteer charity who help lifeboats find people and boats in trouble at sea. They do this from aerial searches from an aeroplane based in Guernsey.

Another year passes and vinyl records continue to be in big demand - almost all artists now release their music in vinyl format proving that records are here to stay!

Second hand records remain in big demand some fetching high prices - first pressings from artists such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix the Beatles & Oasis are quite desirable if they are first pressings and in good condition.

If you have any unwanted records gathering dust in your loft or garage, now might be a good time to sell.

If you are looking to start a record collection or are an established vinyl enthusiast, come along to this year’s Jersey Record Fair, our stallholders will have something for everyone.

Entry is £2 for adults (children free) and all money raised is given to selected local charities. So far, we have raised over £12,000 from entrance fees over 9 record fairs.

Celebrating William the Conqueror’s Legacy

European Year of the Normans

In celebration of the millennium that has passed since William the Conqueror’s birth, Jersey is set to play its part in 2027’s European Year of the Normans.

European Year of the Normans gives us the opportunity to share these aspects of our heritage with other Norman nations, it should help us encourage tourism and gives islanders an opportunity to be part of international artistic or cultural projects, such as the creation of a “Norman Route” across Europe, Southern England and the Channel Islands.

This cultural initiative created by Hervé Morin, President of the Region of Normandy, will put our island alongside Normandy, France, Ireland, the UK, Denmark, Norway, Italy and of course, our fellow Channel Islands as we join in a year-long programme of events that will bring us closer together with our European neighbours to learn about and communicate our communities’ own experiences of our shared Norman heritage.

My own ignorance of the extent of Norman society is proven by my surprise at learning just how far it spread around Europe from Scandinavia all the way to the Mediterranean. So, 2027 gives us a fantastic opportunity to learn more about all that we have in common with countries like Norway, Ireland and Italy.

Jersey and the Channel Islands are in the unique position of enjoying a monarch who remains to us, the Duke of Normandy.

The year gives us the opportunity to showcase the many aspects of island life that are still directly derived from or influenced by our relationship to Normandy. After all, the reason King Charles is our monarch today is because of William the Conqueror’s successful invasion of England.

Our aim is to host and contribute to a range of events aligned with the core themes of the 2027 programme, which include: • Heritage exhibitions and public history projects • Artistic commissions and residencies • Educational and youth-focused initiatives • Cross-island collaborations with mainland Normandy • Cultural exchanges and community engagement All events will explore both the historic significance and contemporary relevance of the Norman world, encouraging us to reflect on identity, migration, cultural fusion, and innovation over the past millennium.

Much of Jersey’s unique identity comes from our strong relationship with Normandy. Our customary laws, our local language Jèrriais, our parish system and much more are elements of Norman society that may seem historic to other nations but are living parts of our island cultures.

Parish Church I have a friend and former colleague who is obsessive about Christmas. No sooner have we celebrated Easter than he begins sending texts telling me how many days there are until 25th December.

The closer it gets, the more frequent the texts become. Whilst I don’t share his obsession, and Christmas still seems a long way off, I do want to write about St Peter’s Christmas Tree Festival.

Many of our visitors tell us that a visit to the Christmas Tree Festival is a highlight of their celebrations. There is something magical about witnessing the awe and wonder seen on the faces of young and old alike. Many of our visitors come back year after year. Will you come and join them?

Each year, I am amazed by the number of trees (last year there were 110), the creativity and humour of those who decorate them - with exhibits ranging from a drink can Nativity to a 6 foot angel - and the commitment, not only of those who produce the trees, but also of the volunteers who are present in church throughout the Festival.

This year, the Festival will be open from Saturday 7th December until Thursday 18th December. If you would like to provide a tree for the Festival, or can help in any other way, please contact Mary Killmister marykilly23@gmail.com.

Most of my produce is grown in recycled pots which can be used every year. At the moment, I am growing seven different kinds of vegetables. In the centre of the garden, I am growing tomatoes. To the left, there are yellow courgettes and black forest courgettes that will soon be climbing up a frame. In the front, I have sweet peppers that I hope will colour up in the next week or so.

In front of the peppers are sweet potatoes which will soon be ready for eating. To the right of the tomatoes, I have two different kinds of sweet peppers growing.

To the right of the fence, sitting on a home-made seat are Mizuna salads and rocket. These are very early salads which will probably be ready within three weeks from when I sowed them.

We are delighted to welcome back Graeme after a short absence, and we hope he is back to full health and enjoying his garden.

No matter how small a garden is, this 9m² gravel garden can be used as a place of refuge and of course a place for growing my fruit and vegetables, not forgetting the flowers that go with it.

Western Miniature Rifle Club

Recently, Western held a get together of some of Jersey’s brightest youth Air Rifle shooters, one of whom seen here, Libby Hart (18) is the current Jersey Island Air Rifle champion and has held this accolade for the last three years!

which originally belonged to his late father, Mr S.G. Payn.

The Payn family have long been associated with the Parish of St Peter and Western Miniature Rifle Club as well as Commonwealth and inter-island competitions. Chatting with Eric, we enjoyed history first hand as he recounted how indoor shooting recommenced after World War 2 in the German tunnel in St Lawrence.

Two rifle clubs, Western and St Lawrence, utilised the tunnels for both .177 Air Rifle and .22 long rifle. Practice night was Tuesday for Western, and Wednesday for St Lawrence.

Competition night was Friday where the clubroom became somewhat busy in the confined space available. Already by Sept 1955, Air Rifle shooting was flourishing in a third tunnel deeper in the main tunnel.

Returning to the 1936 BSA air rifle, Eric recalls that his father had owned it for quite some time possibly from new, but it was his late older brother Syd, six years his senior, who used it to good effect. Using this rifle, Syd soon gained a regular place in the Jersey team to shoot annually against Guernsey in the Grasset Neame trophy. Here is a picture showing the 1936 rifle with Libby’s current one.

As well as young shooters, a popular veteran, Eric Payn joined us. Eric was introduced to prone (lying down) shooting by his father when he was old enough - 12 years old if the body was strong enough!

That was in September 1955 which was also when Eric was accepted into Hautlieu School.

With Eric came a very interesting piece of history. In an old canvas and leather rifle bag was a working 1936 BSA Air Rifle

Eric shoots .177 Air Rifle at Western Miniature Rifle Club where we have invested in current technology scoring systems with 8 firing points able to accommodate both air rifle and air pistol competitions as well as continuing .22 long rifle practice and competition. We recently hosted ITV sports reporter Keilan for a feature on Air Sports Shooting and our facilities at Western range behind the St Peter’s Community Centre.

We welcome new members and will be holding an open afternoon/evening on Saturday 27th September at 4-8pm with both disciplines available (but not simultaneously).

Progress update: Advancing the New Healthcare Facilities Programme – and what’s next As part of the Government of Jersey’s broader initiative to showcase progress on our shared Common Strategic Priorities, Islanders may have seen recent updates highlighting how the New Healthcare Facilities Programme (NHFP) is advancing its commitment to “start building a new hospital at Overdale”. So, for this quarter’s edition, I thought it would be helpful to take a moment to recap where we currently stand with the Programme as a whole – and what critical work is still to come.

What’s happened since the start of the Programme?

Since the Independent Review was presented to the States Assembly in November 2022, the Programme has made steady progress. The review found that a single-site hospital at Overdale was no longer achievable within the approved budget and recommended a phased, multi-site approach.

In line with good governance, the Strategic Outline Case was developed and endorsed in June 2023. It considered different options for new facilities and confirmed the continued urgent need, or case for change. The recommended way forward from that review was a multi-site model and the Feasibility Study explored different options for two configurations of multi-site proposals (Hot and Cold vs Acute and Ambulatory, both combining with a separate Health Village) and locations, with Overdale selected for the Acute Hospital, Kensington Place for Ambulatory Care, and St Saviour for a new Health Village.

Key milestones since then include the start and completion of demolition at Overdale (December 2023–Nov 2024), the relocation of Samarès Ward to St Ewold’s (May 2024), and a public consultation on the Acute Hospital’s concept designs to support the Planning Application. The Outline Business Case was approved in November 2024, securing Phase 1 funding from the States Assembly. Design work for the Acute Hospital progressed throughout 2024, with planning permission granted earlier this year. Meanwhile, the procurement process to appoint a Main Works Delivery Partner has been ongoing since December 2024. Crematorium services will move from Westmount to the refurbished Members’ Room at RJA&HS from September.

Next stages for the Programme: Kensington Place and St Saviour’s Health Village Given the critical importance of delivering the Acute Hospital at Overdale, much of the team’s recent work has rightly focused on developing its design, securing planning permission, and progressing the procurement of a Main Works Delivery Partner to build the facility.

However, the Programme goes far beyond Overdale. Both the Kensington Place Ambulatory Facility – utilising the site on Kensington Place and part of the existing General Hospital site – and St Saviour’s Health Village remain essential components in the wider redevelopment of our healthcare estate.

Work is now underway to refresh the Functional Briefs and Concept Designs for Kensington Place and St Saviour. This work is still in its early stages, and the next steps will involve re-engaging with clinical colleagues across Health and Community Services, as well as other key stakeholders.

The phased and flexible structure of the Programme is intentional and beneficial. It allows plans for areas that are more subject to change - such as Kensington Place and St Saviour - to evolve as required, rather than locking us into fixed decisions too early. It also enables schemes to be progressed as they are affordable.

There is still significant work to do to develop these plans, and they will only move forward with the right level of engagement. That includes input from clinicians, local residents, and the wider public.

We are currently working towards completing the updated Functional Briefs and Development Control Plans (DCP) for both sites by Q4 2025, with a view to sharing these more widely in early 2026. A DCP is a document that sets out how best a site can be most efficiently, and cost effectively developed. Once the DCPs are further developed, the team will be providing more detail on the first permanent construction works on each of the sites. They need to be carefully considered to ensure that throughtout the NHFP and especially at the end of every phase, healthcare services are operating efficiently and effectively, providing the care that islanders expect, helping staff to do their work.

In the meantime, as part of the phase one funding approved by the States Assembly, there is also budget available to develop more “meanwhile” uses for the Kensington Place site.

It has been used since purchase by HCJ for valuable additional storage and other operational needs. We are actively exploring how the site could be continued to be used in the short term to support the overall needs of HCJ as well as deliver improved Public Realm.

These discussions are ongoing, and while there isn’t a confirmed timetable at this stage, the current intention is to begin meanwhile works in early 2026, subject to proposal approvals and any required regulatory sign-off (for example, Planning Services).

The main focus of the procurement process is to deliver quality and value for islanders, and the timeline may change to ensure we achieve this.

As I hope Islanders understand, this process is commercially sensitive and complex with all parties needing to ensure that they understand the designs and anticipated costs before entering into a contract.

However, I look forward to providing further information about this important progress as soon as possible. In the meantime, the NHFP will continue progressing works at the site, ensuring continuity of development. In coming months, works will continue to prepare the old Jersey Water buildings to be site offices, erecting hoardings, diverting existing services, developing designs for site welfare, and site excavations.

Jersey RFC Rifle Club St Peter’s

Competition took place on Sunday morning on 29th June over 300, 500 and 600yds. Conditions were ideal with slight wind mostly directly from the butts to the firing points, very slight haze and cloud suppressed sun. There was very slight dampness on each of the firing points.

Four grazing and cackling guinea fowl were completely unfazed by noise forward of the 300yds firing point adding to the overall interest.

After a summer rest that seemed to go by in a flash, players and coaches from Jersey RFC reported back for training at CoinShares Park in St Peter in July.

JRFC’s men were building towards a first pre-season hitout away to Dorking in mid-August ahead of the start of league action in September. During the final quarter of 2025, Saturday afternoon home games are scheduled against Maidenhead (11th October), CS Stags (25th October), Bracknell (22nd November), Tunbridge Wells (6th December) and London Scottish Lions (13th December).

With a larger squad now competing for places in the 1st XV, there will also be several 2nd XV games scheduled across the season.

Jersey RFC Women were due to start their league campaign against Portsmouth Valkyries on 20th September, with the next two home games scheduled for the weekends of 18th19th October against Horsham and 22nd-23rd November against Canterbury.

The clubs’ minis, juniors and colts players, from age six upwards, were also due to lace up their boots for the first time this season in August or September.

We were ably supported by Sarah Pallot-Campion who brought loan items from Western MRC including mats, jackets, gloves, slings, earmuff noise suppressors and she also acted as Trophy Presenter at the conclusion of the shoot. We were also supported and encouraged by Cliff Mallett and Jurat John Le Breton during the morning.

John Payn Jnr and Eric Payn used a rifle previously fired by the late Syd Payn, and others were loaned from the JRA store for our use. Much praise must be addressed to Andrew and Barry Le Cheminant who coached all of us and kept scores electronically during the whole event. They then shot at the end of each section!

JRFC members started the new season with a chance to get up close and personal with two leading international rugby stars. Tom Curry was one of the stand-out players for the British & Irish Lions in the series win over Australia, while his twin brother Ben played a key role for England in the winning tour of Argentina and USA. The two siblings, whose sister Charlotte lives in Jersey, shared their experiences and took questions in front of an audience of more than 200 people in an event chaired by BBC journalist Robin Grey.

St Peter Football Club

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again!

Prior to the new season getting under way, a lot of activity has been taking place at St Peter FC both on and off the pitch.

The grounds have undergone a tidying up exercise with a repainting of the outside area, and there has been a complete makeover of the WP Le Marquand lounge area, enabled by kind courtesy of the Renouf family in memory of their late father, Neville, who graced the St Peter’s Club for many years. It has presented a clean, bright modern image for the club with improvements to the bar area, new ceilings, a new carpet and a magnum size TV screen. It is planned to hold an official opening of the new facility on full completion soon.

Both clubs have longstanding relationships with St Peter FC and, in the case of Everton, that goes back to 2003 when they paid their first visit to St Peter FC and Jersey. They have returned every year since, other than during the pandemic.

Sean Robertson, Head Coach, has been responsible for running the annual course for the past 9 consecutive visits.

The club has also been busy organising two excellent coaching weeks open to all Island children age 5-14 years. In total, over 250 children have enjoyed being coached and having fun with coaches from top clubs - Southampton FC and Everton FC both of which ran five day courses during the school summer holidays.

Every single place for both events was taken with weeks to spare. Under FA rules, one coach can only have responsibility for a maximum 16 players, and this resulted in long waiting lists and several disappointed youngsters. With any of the coaching weeks run by the club, it is always advisable to book early to secure a place. These are always fantastic weeks for the young players, with both clubs having their own formula for their respective events and both receiving outstanding accolades from players and their parents for exciting and highly memorable experiences.

If you are a talented player in these age groups and wish to benefit from first class facilities and top-level coaching, please get in touch and come and join a training session. As a club, we compete in off-island competitions such as Kent FA County Youth Cups (one of the top English County Youth Cup competitions) and the Sartilly (France) International smallsided Tournament. We also ensure a clear pathway into senior football at these levels.

The popular innovation of moving all younger children to Saturday morning sessions will Everton FC Coach Joe Hampson continue with children from Reception (for whom there will be no charge) to Year 3 enjoying their session at 9am-10am, Years 4 & 5 at 10am-11am, and Year 6, U12’s and U13’s at 11.30am-12.30pm. The older youth age groups are also back in training for the new season - U15, U16 and U18.

At senior levels our men’s and ladies’ teams are back in full training with several new signings and are looking forward to the new season. The men’s team got off to an excellent start defeating St Brelade 2-1 in the Charity Cup, but found the semifinal against last year’s Premier League Champions Grouville a step too far. Both managers are always happy to hear from ambitious players who believe they can bring an additional quality to their teams.

Our reserve team, U35’s and Walking football teams are all setting their standards high and sure they can make an impact this season. Our managers and coaches of these teams are also keen to hear from anyone who believes they can make a difference.

Please come and support your Parish teams - on Saturdays for Seniors, and Sundays for Ladies and Junior teams.

The JEP carries all St Peter FC fixtures in their sports section every Friday.

Statistically, every day one more person in Jersey is diagnosed with diabetes It may seem odd that a feature creating awareness of diabetes should highlight feet but, if you are diabetic, the daily check of your feet and keeping them in good condition, will prevent one of the disease’s worst consequences, the loss of limbs due to a lack of feeling in the extremities (neuropathy) leading to cuts or blisters in particular becoming gangrenous.

Today managing Type 1 diabetes with insulin injections is commonplace but diabetes itself still remains something of an enigma. It is a condition which is not preventable and Type 1 occurs when the pancreas ceases to produce the insulin we all rely upon to manage the level of sugar in our blood.

Type 2 diabetes, which occurs as the pancreas progressively produces less insulin, while itself not totally preventa-

Most of us would assume that choosing our lifestyle is very much up to ourselves. However, your lifestyle can actually lead you down a path whose ultimate destination is the very last thing you want and that is to diabetes.

Diabetes is all about sugar in the blood and occurs when the body becomes incapable of controlling how much sugar our blood is prepared to accept. Fortunately for most of us our pancreas (a large gland behind the stomach) produces the hormone insulin which automatically regulates glucose levels in the blood.

Why diabetes occurs is not known and therefore it cannot be prevented and Type 1 can strike children as young as two or three years old. There is no early detection for Type 1 diabetes, but Type 2 can be detected with a blood test and if detected early enough, can be managed, and even reversed.
