Learnings From a Volatile Year Investment management and financial planning are not one-off tasks to be ticked off to-do-lists once implemented. Strategies must continually be reviewed and refined to reflect the evolving financial landscape. As we work our way through the final quarter of 2025, now’s a good time to take stock of the year to see what learnings can be taken for 2026 and beyond.

Arguably, 2025 saw the world become a more uncertain place, both geopolitically and economically. Geopolitically, look no further than the ongoing Russia/Ukraine war and Israel’s invasion of Gaza; economically, developed countries’ high debt/low growth profiles and global trade tensions have weighed on markets.

Take trade. Liberation Day was a game-changer - not the 9 May Liberation Day here in Jersey, but US President Donald Trump’s self-declared Liberation Day on 2 April, when he announced all US imports will be subject to a 10% tariff. Certain nations, including China, were hit harder. A full-blown trade war and global recession seemed likely. A sell-off in global stocks followed.

Trump’s Liberation Day, a stand-out example of how in 2025 previously regarded givens - free trade, globalisation, responsible US global leadership – could no longer be taken for granted.

Elevated uncertainty became the order of the day.

Takeaway: Government bonds rose in the immediate aftermath of Liberation Day. So too, did other safe-haven assets, highlighting how diversified, multi-asset portfolios can provide protection.

Takeaway: The turnaround highlights the importance of staying the course. Volatile markets, geopolitical/ macroeconomic uncertainty will cause strategies to drift off course but, with insightful stewardship, they can be corrected.

Withdrawing funds during a market downturn, by contrast, can derail long-held plans and be hard to recover from.

2026 and Beyond Many of the issues that dominated sentiment in 2025 remain.

Cue recently reignited trade war fears following China’s decision to impose export controls on rare earth minerals and Trump’s tit-for-tat threats to hit China with 100% tariffs. Closer to home, a year after her £40bn tax-raising budget, UK chancellor Rachel Reeves is looking to plug yet another multi-billion-pound funding gap. Against such an uncertain backdrop, expect further bouts of volatility.

As April 2025’s tariff tantrum showed, knee-jerk fund withdrawals often lead to poor results. Cutting through the noise, focusing on market fundamentals and maintaining an analytical approach to investing was the correct course of action. That’s the longterm approach we take at Quilter Cheviot when constructing and managing diversified, multi-asset portfolios. We believe this not only generates better outcomes for investors but will also position portfolios better to deal with whatever 2026, and beyond, has in store.

Investments and the income from them can go down as well as up, you may not get back what you invest.

In the event, a global recession was averted as the US significantly rowed back tariffs, while companies adapted by diversifying supply chains, adopting near-shoring strategies, adjusting prices, and investing more in technology. Together with renewed excitement surrounding technology stocks and artificial intelligence (AI), it wasn’t long before the ‘everything’ rally resumed. Markets from equities to gold soared.

It feels as though someone’s had the calendar on fast-forward! Maybe it’s not the months racing past, but just me slowing down (gracefully, of course).

ur main feature this time is the laying of ten more Stolpersteine stones here in the Parish. These poignant memorials remind us of those who suffered during the darkest of times — Lest We Forget. You can read more about them on page 36.

Judging the Petite La Cloche Squirrel Story competition was no easy task — every entry was a delight! Some were eye-wateringly funny, others deeply thoughtful, but all of them brought a smile to my face. Meet the winners on page 38.

Thank you for all your emails about the last ‘Where Am I?’ feature, which was the monument in Grands Vaux. Your feedback uncovered new details and even a family connection — the full update is on page 49.

Another highlight was the Parish Churchyard Tour with Toby Clyde-Smith — who knew the residents of our churchyard had such extraordinary (and occasionally scandalous!) stories? From heroes to anti-heroes and everything in between, it was an evening to remember. Read more on page 54.

This issue also has a lovely musical note running through it, with performances from Georgetown Methodist Church, the Oxford Choral Scholars, and the wonderfully talented pupils of St Michael’s School.

If you fancy some fresh air after one mince pie too many, I’ll be taking a Boxing Day stroll around Lé Val Aumé — 10am start from the car park off Les Varines. Come along if you’d like a gentle walk and a chat. Diary Dates are on page 14.

Lé Connétable Dear Parishioners, I hope this message finds you all in good health. By the time you are reading this, the clocks will have changed, the evenings will be drawing in, and our mornings will be a little lighter — a sure sign that winter is on its way.

W

e will have recently held our annual Coffee Morning in aid of the Jersey Royal British Legion, which I hope many of you were able to attend and support. It was a wonderful community event, and you can find the full story and photos on pages 11 and 12.

Looking ahead, we will be holding a Parish Assembly on Tuesday 2nd December, which will focus on the proposed new Parish Park. This is an important step in developing an exciting community space for St Saviour. I encourage all Parishioners to attend, learn more about the plans, and share their views. Please keep an eye on our Parish website for confirmation of the date and further details.

On Tuesday 9 December, I will once again be hosting a Christmas Party for the children of the Parish, where Santa will be making a special appearance. Full details will be available on our Parish website. To help Santa receive letters from the children, we have liaised with Jersey Post, who will be providing

It was a busy morning for Connétable Lewis, hosting his annual coffee morning in aid of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. You may not know, one of his hobbies is mending clocks — he even maintains the Parish Church clock!

A

lthough he didn’t pour any tea, he certainly made time to take down the beautiful Parish Hall clock, which is in need of a little TLC. We’re not sure when he’ll find the time to repair it — running the parish takes up most of his time — but I’ve no doubt it’ll soon be back up and keeping good time!

And finally, please save the date for our New Year Luncheons for Senior Parishioners, which will take place on Saturday 17 and Saturday 24 January 2026 at the Hotel Ambassadeur. These events are always a highlight of our Parish calendar, and we look forward to welcoming many of you there. Tickets will be available from the Parish Hall from 1 December.

Parish Rates All Over again!

The annual returns for 2026 are due to be sent out at the beginning of January 2026, these will be sent to every owner of land within St. Saviour and must be returned within 15 days of the date of the notice. If you fail to make a return within the time allowed, you may be liable to a penalty (maximum £1,000)

What does this mean?

Land is assessed on the attributes at January 1st. If there has been no change to the attributes, and the previous rateable value is not disputed, then the rateable value will not change from the previous year.

The land owner is required to complete an Annual Return for all land owned on 1 January. Guidance on completing the form can be found on the Parish website stsaviour.je

The Annual Return must: • give the address of the land; • give the name and address of the occupier, if let; • confirm the attributes of the land; and • state if there have been any changes, including changes

of use or alterations, to the land in the previous year or to the ‘purpose’ for which the land is used.

Havre des Pas Coastal Flood

Alleviation Project On 19 August, a drop-In session was held at the Parish Hall as part of the ongoing public consultation for the Havre des Pas Coastal Flood Alleviation Scheme.

Running from 6:00pm to 8:30pm, the event provided local residents with the opportunity to engage directly with the I&E Coastal Engineering team. The drop-in sessions were an important part of the wider Public Consultation that took place between 7th July and 11th September, to inform and receive feedback from the public to support the development of the proposed flood defence measures.

Existing dog licences must be renewed from 1st January 2026. To renew online, please visit doglicences.je and enter the same email address used during your initial registration.

Reminder emails with a renewal link will be sent from 6th January (do check your junk box if you don’t receive a reminder).

Please note that dog licences can not be renewed prior to January 1st.

Litter Picking Heroes The first litter-picking events after the summer break took place on the 11th October and the 8th November — and it’s amazing how much a small group of volunteers can achieve in such a short time! A special mention goes to 14-year-old Olivia, a Beaulieu student whose enthusiasm has inspired us all. She began collecting litter while walking her dog, and now enjoys doing it even without her four-legged friend. She sets a great example of community spirit in action.

The flood alleviation scheme is divided into four zones, with the St Saviour frontage falling within Zones 3 and 4.

Attendees included residents from the Havre des Pas and Greve d’Azette areas, many of whom came to learn more about the proposed plans, understand how the scheme could affect their properties, and raise any questions or concerns. The I&E team were available throughout the evening to explain technical aspects of the scheme, share visual materials, and gather feedback. The session helped foster a transparent and collaborative approach to project development, ensuring that local voices are heard in shaping the next-stage concept designs.

The aim is to ensure the scheme not only protects people and property from flooding but also enhances the area.

As the year draws to a close and thoughts naturally turn to the festive season. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a peaceful Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year

As we approach the end of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the many occasions we have shared together as a parish community.

It has been a privilege to meet so many of you, to listen to your thoughts, and to take part in projects that strengthen parish life.

While Christmas is a joyous time for many, I’m conscious that it can be a time that some may find difficult, particularly if your life has unexpectedly changed this year and this will be the first Christmas living with that life-changing event. If that applies to you, I hope you can draw some comfort from the fact that I am especially holding you in my thoughts.

Dear Parishioners,

As the festive season approaches, I would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas — or season's greetings, whatever faith or tradition you celebrate.

The nights are getting colder and the days shorter and darker, and as we head towards the winter solstice and Christmas festivities, I think it is worth reflecting on the importance of slowing down at this time of year. Human beings have always looked for ways to light up the darkness in winter and spending time with loved ones and with your community is the best way to do this. I hope that whether your days are full or gently quiet, you can find peace and connection as we head into a new year.

Although my job at Health has kept me extremely busy this year, our Parish remains very close to my heart, and I'm always happy to be contacted by email (T.Binet@ gov.je) or phone 07797 715292 or meet up with you if that is preferred.

In any event, I look forward to seeing some of you at the Deputies’ Children’s Christmas Party on 9th December.

Honorary Police UPDATE Welcome to our new

Chef de Police - Centenier Paulo Martins

Chef de Police We are delighted to announce that Paulo Martins was appointed as Chef de Police for the Parish of St Saviour on 22nd August 2025.

P

aulo began his honorary service with the Parish of Grouville in 2005 before moving to St Saviour as Centenier in 2017. With many years of dedicated experience, he now takes on this leadership role to continue serving our Parish community.

In the new Chef de Police’s own words:“I joined the Parish of St. Saviour as a Centenier in 2017, after nearly 12 years serving in Grouville - first as a Constable’s Officer and then as a Vingtenier.

When I first signed up, it was simply to give something back to the community that had given so much to me. I genuinely thought I’d serve one term and move on. But here I am, two decades later, still proudly wearing the uniform and doing my part.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting people from all walks of life, many of whom I now count as friends.

The experience has been both rewarding and enriching, offering valuable insights and a deep sense of community connection.

My focus as Chef is on promoting the Honorary Police service, strengthening relationships with Parish officials and teams. I am committed to ensuring we continue to support our Parishioners and I remain focused on maintaining our operational duties - road checks, speed monitoring, and regular patrols - all of which play a vital role in keeping our parishioners and road users safe”.

On 22 August 2025, Steven Laffoley-Edwards stepped down as Chef de Police for the Parish of St Saviour, a role he has carried out with dedication and distinction for the last 6 years.

W

hile he has handed over the leadership of the Honorary Police, Steven will continue to serve the Parish as a Centenier until his current term concludes in December 2026. (Although we hope he is going to seek re-election for a further 3 years after this).

The Parish is grateful to Steven for his contribution during his time as Chef de Police. His hard work and commitment have been invaluable in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community.

Brave the Chill, Catch the Thrill: Jersey’s Sea Swimmers in Action

Few things connect us so beautifully with nature as swimming in the sea. Here in Jersey, we’re lucky to have stunning bays, ever-changing tides, and a community of swimmers who take to the water all year round. I’ve been fortunate to swim across the Channel and beyond, but what I love just as much is helping others discover the joy of sea swimming right here at home through my small local group.

S

ea swimming has really taken off in Jersey, with groups meeting regularly across the island. Each group has its own character, but whether it’s my group - the Jersey Mermaids & Mermen Having Fun, the Bouley Bay Belles, or the Lido Swimmers, everyone shares the same camaraderie, fun, and respect for the sea.

Almost Ready

The benefits are incredible - both for body and mind. Cold seawater boosts circulation, stimulates the immune system, lowers blood pressure, and can help with inflammation. Many swimmers tell me they sleep better and feel more energised. Mentally, a dip clears your head, reduces stress, and gives a sense of calm. And the friendships formed before and after a swim are priceless, full of laughter, encouragement, and good company, even on grey winter days.

Of course, the sea demands respect. Jersey’s tides are among the largest in the world, and conditions can change fast. That’s why I always encourage newcomers to follow a few simple rules: • Always swim with others – never alone.

• Wear a bright cap and use a tow float.

• Acclimatise slowly: start with short dips.

• Check the tides before entering.

• Warm up gradually afterwards with layers and a hot drink.

The only thing warmer than the tea? The company (and the croissants).

And here’s what one of my swimmers, Deputy David Warr, who recently completed a course with me, had to say:

Joining an established group is the safest way to start. My group is small and friendly, and there are plenty of other groups across the island, so you’ll find a swim that suits you. After a chilly dip, some swimmers like to head to the Sauna Society at St Catherine’s, where warmth, steam, and good company make the perfect follow-up. It’s not essential, but it’s a lovely way to recover.

Feeling adventurous? Join me in the New Year’s Day swim (see Diary Dates on page 14 for details). They attract crowds of swimmers and spectators, raise money for charity, and bring festive cheer to our beaches. A few practice dips first will make the experience more enjoyable - and if you’d like guidance, give me a ring; I’m happy to help.

As I always say: “The sea is our friend, but it demands respect”. With the right preparation, sea swimming offers health benefits, fun, and a wonderful way to connect with nature and your community.

“I recently took up swimming as a challenge to myself to overcome a real fear of deep water. As a child I had thought I was going to drown in a swimming pool and since then I’ve never managed to stay the course to overcome that fear. I met up with Sally some 2 months ago and asked her to teach me to swim. I think when your fear is that deep it’s important that you have complete trust in your teacher, after all she has my life in her hand. We’ve been absolutely religious in our efforts to overcome my phobia, we’ve swum virtually every day and I’ve also practised in between. I’m now up to 19 hours and yesterday was the first day I swam out of my depth alone, an incredible personal milestone. We have also only swum in the sea which has thrown at me all sorts of challenging conditions.

Swells, wind, rough conditions but what it has made me appreciate is the beauty of the sea. That incredible free resource that I only now am truly appreciating for the health and wellbeing properties it brings. Of course none of this would have been possible without the perseverance of Sally. I will be eternally grateful to her”.

Did You Know?

Jersey has some of the largest tidal ranges in the world - up to 12 metres.

Many islanders swim year-round, with winter water temperatures around 8°C. While summer is an easier time to start, remember the old adage: there’s no time like the present! And by the time you read this, Suzie Webb may have joined me for a couple of practice dips, ready for a New Year’s Day swim at St Catherine’s. I hope to see you there too!

British Legion Poppy Appeal A Morning of Remembrance at St Saviour’s Parish Hall – with plenty of cuppas, cakes, and chatter to last the whole morning.

n 1 November, Connétable Kevin Lewis hosted his annual coffee morning in support of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, welcoming special guests His Excellency Vice Admiral Sir Jeremy Kyd, Lady Kyd and Chelsea Pensioner Michael Gué.

The well-attended event brought together parishioners, visitors, and members of the 3rd St Saviour’s Scouts with parent helpers, who proudly supported the morning’s activities. The Scouts and parents all helped to set up the tables and chairs and lay out the cups and saucers. They were so efficient they almost put the Community Volunteers out of a job — they are welcome back any time! Outside the Parish Hall, a Fox CVR(W) armoured vehicle served as a striking reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who served, and as a powerful symbol of remembrance during the Poppy Appeal.

This year’s visiting Chelsea Pensioner was Michael Gué, who served with the Royal Corps of Signals as a Warrant Officer for twenty-two years, followed by seventeen years in the American Army. He joined the Royal Hospital Chelsea in April 2023 after a rigorous sevenstage interview process, and says he loves living there — even though the 1692 building is a little small for the 280 Pensioners who now call it home.

Also present were members of the Royal British Legion Jersey Riders Section. The group now has thirty-three members, twenty-two of whom are riders. Our new Chef de Police, Paulo Martins, serves as a Section Leader for the Riders alongside John Pallot-Brown.

The Royal Militia Island of Jersey Association was also represented, displaying a fascinating collection of First World War medals and memorabilia. There were too many wonderful items to mention here, so we’ll be featuring them in more detail in future editions of La Cloche. Their impressive collection of Royal British Legion Parish pins also drew much admiration.

A big thank you goes to Waitrose, who kindly donated the cakes and scones for the morning, and to everyone who attended, helping to boost donations to the Poppy Appeal by purchasing official poppy merchandise, enjoying a slice of cake, and a cuppa — all for a very good cause.

It has certainly been a year of reflection and celebration, marking 80 years since the Liberation of the Island — a poignant reminder of the freedom and community spirit we continue to cherish today. As the chill of winter sets in, we look back to a sunsoaked day in Howard Davis Park, where families, laughter, and community spirit made Children’s Day 2025 one to remember.

C

hildren’s Day 2025 was the fourth such event to be held in our Parish in the beautiful Howard Davis Park. There were hundreds of families from nearby and beyond, enjoying the activities on offer. I attended again with my family and the children particularly enjoyed the offerings from the Jersey Youth Service, the Jersey Music Service (JMS), the Jersey Library, the Co-Op, and Caring Cooks, although there were many other amazing charities and businesses there.

Youth Workers from our own Grands Vaux Youth Project could be seen dashing about, very busy and helping children to enjoy the day.

The giant zorbing balls were very popular! There was so much care, attention and patience shown by the JMS staff at their table where children could try a variety of musical instruments.

Year 5 represented themselves and the school in a very good light, showing that they are not only passionate learners, but also confident young debaters!

We leverage Jersey’s rich historical resources to deepen students’ understanding of the past, helping them make informed choices for their futures. History plays a vital role at FCJ Primary by contributing significantly to citizenship education, teaching pupils about Jersey’s development within the British democratic tradition. Urban Legends Urban trees have become something of a cause célèbre recently, with good reason. While we’ve long known about their benefits, the idea is now gaining wider traction.

T

here’s no shortage of excellent reasons for this, of course, including the twin drivers of shade and cooling; indeed, most of us have experienced the heat-retaining properties of concrete and metal that can make urban life unbearable, especially further south.

Boosting urban tree cover is a relatively simple way to improve life for millions, with statistics firmly backing this up.

It’s beyond doubt that urban tree cover lowers maximum temperatures, reducing heat-related deaths. In fact, a 2023 study in The Lancet posited that 30% canopy cover in Europe could have prevented almost 40% of deaths during extreme heatwaves.

Spending time around trees provides a wide range of health benefits, notably improving air quality, lowering blood pressure, boosting immunity and reducing the prevalence of heat-related health issues. It also reduces stress and anxiety, improves mood and can even benefit cognitive function.

How does St Helier fare? Let’s not forget how many of us head there daily, after all. According to Global Forest Watch, it has 4.17% cover – a very low figure compared to UK cities like London and Birmingham (18-19%) or even the least green US cities like Denver (9.6%) and Phoenix (8.5%).

While it’d be wrong to compare like-for-like with these metropolises, it’s still a fascinating metric that strongly suggests we could be a lot greener. You can’t plant trees anywhere, however, making it vital to protect what we have.

In 2021, Dutch urban forestry expert Dr. Cecil Konijindijk devised a new rule of thumb for urban planning. Seeking a mantra to “enhance urban greenery, biodiversity, climate adaptation and public health”, he coined 3+30+300: • At least three mature trees visible from every home, school and workplace.

• Minimum 30% tree canopy cover in every neighbourhood.

• Residents live 300 metres (max.) from nearest high-quality green space.

While the numbers clearly have an arbitrary element to them, the criteria do not. Tree visibility, canopy cover and access are all integral to optimal neighbourhood life.

For example, the felling of 33 mature trees at St Joseph’s Care Home was successfully blocked but, at the time of writing, is under appeal. These are the only trees visible to many of the residents, providing colour, wildlife and seasonal variation in a way only nature can.

Surprisingly few trees are protected locally and there’s certainly a strong case for more tree protection. Architects can also make a huge difference by integrating existing trees into design.

It’s not going to get any cooler, so it’s time to up our urban tree game.

Champions Defend Titles as New Talent Shines

s I write this piece for the magazine the Bowls Club is making the transition from the six months SUMMER season to the 25/26 Winter season. As the only outdoor club with a carpet (not grass), we will carry on bowling when the weather allows. As we always tell the doubters “if you wear the right clothes it is most enjoyable!”

Season 2025/26 Commences New Club members in action

The season ended with the annual Club Championship finals, and with Lindsey and Taylor Greechan each successfully defending their Single’s titles, it may seem to most observers that 2025 was “more of the same”. Whilst it’s true that many of the Club’s stalwarts were prevalent in the finals, the real BUZZ and EXCITEMENT was the new members bowling so well at the end of their first or second season in the sport!

The Club’s league and representative teams had seen many new faces making their debut, and the Novices’ finals were a fine example of how far they’d come in a short time. Rab Brown took the Men’s title, defeating Norman Stirk with both playing some excellent bowls. The Ladies’ final went to 24 ends with Babs Moffat coming through 21-18, just edging out Mary O’Neill.

There was an early start to the new session for the senior teams with the Charity Cup kicking off at the beginning of August. With a number of players being involved in the Island Games and other summer commitments, this led to a quick turnaround and a reduced pre-season.

T

he Reserves also started their season in mid-August. The First team have had a mixed start to their league season, while the Reserves have won every game so far at the time of writing.

The junior leagues started a bit later with the first fixtures in early September, once the school term had begun. The Club is represented at all age groups and has had promising starts across all teams. This is the first year where the new Under 15s have played in a competitive league and have had the perfect start winning 3 out of 3. Across all age groups the Club continues to give younger players, where they are ready, the opportunity to play up in the year group above, to aid their development.

The younger age groups and minis have also kicked off their seasons with regular training sessions and matches across all teams.

With TWENTY new faces joining during the summer, the Club has extended its winter programme, and have upgraded their lights to allow for this. When asked what has made bowls an enjoyable experience, the common denominators are “meeting people, the new friendships and feeling of community.”

The Pétanque Group continue to meet on Monday and Thursday mornings at 09.45, subject to the weather. This summer it has been much kinder to us and we have not been rained off very many times at all!

he Island league continues to flourish, and although we have considerably weakened our chances of winning the league, we have divided our players into a Red and a Gold team in order to give all those who wish to participate in competition bowling a chance to play. Even with this St. Saviour are in the top few!

Recently we held our third quarterly lunch at the Dolphin Hotel in Gorey. The event was well attended with 22 people including Connétable Kevin Lewis. There were plenty of lovely prizes to be won in the Raffle, which raised £102 for the Twinning Association.

he Christmas Lunch will be held at St Brelade’s Bay Hotel on Saturday 13th December 2025, with a raffle. All raffle prizes are donated by our generous members.

The Annual General Meeting of our Twinning Association will be held at the Hotel Ambassadeur on Sunday 1st February 2026.

Some members have taken part in the individual competitions with great success, and more to the point, enjoyment meeting and socialising with competitors from the other parishes. There is always friendly banter!

By the time you read this, St. Saviour will have already taken part in the final of the Parish Knockout Competition for the second year in a row, once again facing St. Brelade. The match was held in October on Grouville Parish’s newly refurbished terrain. We look forward to sharing (hopefully!) some good news about the result in the next edition of La Cloche.

The Group has unfortunately lost a few players in the last year as we all grow older, so it would be good to welcome some new faces to the terrain, and new members are always welcome on both Mondays and Thursday. On the first Thursdays of the month it is Melée Day, and it is interesting to note that it is not always the same winners, everyone has a chance!

Looking forward to seeing more players joining us.

For those that don’t know, St. Saviour is twinned with the Normandy town of Villedieu-les-Poêles. Known as the ‘City of Copper’, Villedieu has a proud tradition of metalwork and bell-founding that stretches back centuries. The town is home to the famous Cornille-Havard bell foundry, which still produces bells for churches and cathedrals around the world. In 2012 the foundry produced eight of the nine bells made for Notre Dame’s towers to mark its 850th anniversary. More recently, with the restoration after the 2019 fire, several of the older bells (namely those in the north tower) were cleaned and renovated back at the Cornille-Havard foundry.

Household recycling collection 2026 This guide explains how to use the St. Saviour household recycling collection. A collection planner is included so you know when your recycling will be collected.

Every home in St. Saviour receives a recycling collection, in addition to the existing rubbish and glass collections. Recycling collections will be on the same day as your General Waste. All items to be placed in either Clear or Blue bag as per guidance, these are available from the Parish Hall.

Latest ‘Stolpersteine’ Stones Laid to Parishioners

In mid-September, Dr Gilly Carr OBE, Associate Professor of Conflict Archaeology and Holocaust Heritage at Cambridge University, and Chris Addy, Sites Curator for Jersey Heritage, completed the installation of another set of Stolpersteine (German for ‘stumbling stones’). Also present was Mrs Martha Bernstein, President of the Jersey Jewish Congregation, representing her community’s deep connection to those persecuted under Nazi tyranny.

wenty stones were installed in 2024 (see La Cloche Autumn edition no. 64); this year a further twenty-five were laid, ten of which are in our Parish. Dr Carr, a world authority on the Occupation and its history, has devoted much of her career to this field. Each Stolpersteine is placed in the pavement outside the house where the person lived, allowing passers-by to quite literally ‘stumble’ upon their story. Canon Clifford Cohu (1883) of ‘Holly Lodge’, Five Oaks. A retired Guernsey clergyman, he became Acting Rector of St Saviour in 1940 when the incumbent returned to UK. Remembered for openly spreading BBC news – especially whilst cycling down the Parade – from an illegal parish radio, he was a central figure in ‘The St. Saviour’s Wireless Case’, in which 18 people were tried. Canon Cohu died tragically in Zoëschen ‘re-education camp’ on 20th September 1944, following starvation and severe beatings.

Stanley Green (1900) of ‘Samoa’, opposite Victoria Cottage Homes.

A projectionist at West’s Cinema, he was suspected of espionage after photographing maps of German fortifications prepared by the local ARP service. The secret tiny negatives reached British Intelligence via deportee Major Crawford-Morrison. Green endured brutal treatment in Buchenwald but was later reunited with his son Leslie in Laufen camp; miraculously both survived and returned to Jersey in 1945.

The Rossi Family Stones

Joseph Tierney (1912) of ‘Casa Loma’, Langley Avenue, was sexton at St Saviour’s Church. Also involved in The Wireless Case, he wrote down BBC news received from John Whitley Nicolle and distributed it with Arthur Wakeham, to Henry Coutanche at the Parish Hall and to Canon Cohu. Arrested on 3rd March 1943, Tierney was one of four parishioners who died as a result of The Wireless Case and is listed on the Lighthouse Memorial as one of ‘The Jersey 21’.

for the Germans, he and friends stole and hid ammunition, including a machine gun! Later classified as an NN (Nacht und Nebel – Night and Fog) prisoner, these were held incommunicado without medical care or contact, a practice later condemned as a war crime at Nuremberg. He died on 20th January 1945 in Neuengamme concentration camp.

Clarence Claude Painter (1893), a retired WW1 Royal Flying Corps lieutenant, lived in New Zealand Avenue with his wife Dorothy and children Peter, Joan, John and Dorothy. An informer caused Clarence and son Peter’s (1924) arrest, when the Germans discovered their hidden wireless, a camera, and maps of military sites. They are two more of ‘The Jersey 21’, also Nacht und Nebel prisoners. Peter, a keen sportsman frustrated by the Occupation, had taken forbidden photographs and held secret Boy Scout meetings at home. Both were deported in December 1943 and died in concentration camps in 1944 and 1945.

Jean-Mari Rossi (1898), of Italian descent, lived in Chestnut Avenue with his son Marcel. Their stones now lie side by side. Believed deported either for their Italian heritage or for refusing to work for the Germans, they were part of the February 1943 deportations.

Marcel, malnourished and ill, was separated from his father and is thought to have died on a death march to Dachau in April 1945.

Remembering the Past The Cohu Family Lay Their Stone

Arthur Dimery (1892) of Birches Avenue, a single gardener, was another Wireless Case member and one of ‘The Jersey 21’. Tried at a public military court on 9th April 1943 – a show trial intended to deter others from listening to the BBC – he was sentenced to three months and two weeks for assisting in the non-surrender of a wireless set and spreading news. Deported in May 1943, he apparently died of a heart attack in Laufen civilian camp on 4th April 1944.

These Stolpersteine connect us to individuals whose courage, suffering, and defiance shaped Jersey’s story under Occupation.

Each stone marks a life once lived among us – a neighbour, a friend, a parishioner – whose quiet acts of resistance or tragic persecution remind us of both the darkness and resilience of that time.

For those who wish to learn more, detailed biographies and archival materials are available on the Frank Falla Archive, which continues to preserve these vital memories for future generations.

Samuel Selig Simon (1862) married Beatrice Victoria Alberta Nicolle, a Gentile, and registered as a Jew in October 1940. Anti-Semitic Orders severely restricted Jewish Islanders’ freedoms. Due to poor health, his deportation was delayed; he and his family lived in constant fear, even keeping curtains closed all day. The Simons moved to their daughter Ella’s home, Elstan, Langley Park, where Samuel died on 7th November 1943. He is buried in St Saviour’s Churchyard.

John Whitley Nicolle (1918), a farm labourer of Palm Cottage, Maufant, was branded the chief ‘offender’ in The Wireless Case for showing ‘initiative’. He received three years’ imprisonment for failing to surrender a wireless set and making leaflets. His wife, Rubina, was sentenced to eight months, served in Jersey Prison.

William Marsh (1920) of St Helier, a motor mechanic for the Germans after losing other jobs for his poor attitude, was another of ‘The Jersey 21’. Known for his defiance, he passed on BBC news to coworkers – at work! Arrested in February 1944, he was sentenced to fifteen months for insulting German forces and spreading news, deemed ‘a fanatical enemy’. Deported through several prisons, he died 9th March 1945 and lies in a mass grave at Alt-Tröglitz near Gleina camp.

Squirrel Story Competition

Our Winners!

Choosing our two winners was immensely difficult. Each story had its own spark — from daring squirrel adventures to gentle woodland friendships, from the love and support of family to tales of courage and laugh-out-loud mischief.

They were all fabulous in their own ways, and every young writer should feel proud of what they created.

After much deliberation, our winners were chosen:

Bertie Whitchurch a Year 6 student at FCJ and Olivia Nobes a a Year 10 student at Beaulieu.

In Olivia’s story, ‘The Little Squirrel’s Big Adventure’, a curious squirrel dreams of adventure but finds her corner of St Saviour a little too busy with cars to explore safely.

One day, while Olivia is out collecting litter, accompanied by her dog Max, a brave squirrel seizes her chance — leaping onto Max’s back for a secret ride through the parish!

Their journey leads them to Howard Davis Park where the little stowaway discovers a world of trees, safety, and new friends among the branches. Though she loves her new home, she still dreams of visiting Olivia and Max again someday — when there are bridges safe enough for squirrels to cross.

Bertie’s story introduced Ted, a squirrel with an extraordinary superpower — he could talk to humans. In a touching finale, Ted gifted a sacred acorn to the human leader, giving him the same gift of communication so that people and squirrels could finally understand one another. It was imaginative, thoughtful, and beautifully written — a story with heart and hope.

Squirrel Tales Galore!

What a delight it was to read the 32 handwritten stories submitted for our recent Squirrel Writing Competition! Every single one was a joy — funny, imaginative, heartfelt, and brimming with creativity. All the under 10 entries were from FCJ Year 6.

T

here was something wonderfully authentic about seeing those carefully handwritten pages — each one unique, full of personality, and a reminder of the effort and enthusiasm that went into every story. In an age of screens and keyboards, the handwritten stories made these entries all the more special.

While we can’t print all 32 stories here, we’re sharing a few highlights below. To everyone who took part — thank you for your creativity, imagination, and wonderful handwriting! You made judging both a challenge and an absolute pleasure.

James gave us a good chuckle — when the squirrels arrived at the Parish Hall to discuss their grand idea for a bridge, they found a wild party in full swing! The Connétable was too busy dancing to notice them, so the squirrels wisely returned the next morning. Happily, when they did, the Connétable thought it was a marvellous idea — and the parish built them a bridge.

Monica imagined a bridge ‘covered in flowers and leaves’, while her squirrel friends suggested a roof for protection from animals and rain and squirrel Billy added a practical touch: ‘Maybe the people in St Saviour can donate money so that the bridge can be made’.

Josephine’s ‘The Oak Door’ introduced Amber, a squirrel who hadn’t seen her brother Carrot for ages. One day, she discovered a new squirrel bridge and danced the Macarena across it! On the other side, she entered the Oak Door and found a land of green, shiny trees, big brown acorns — and, happily, her brother Carrot.

Casper gave us unforgettable characters. His ‘builder squirrels’, led by Bartholemew Squirrellctus, appointed Lieutenant Squirrelus as chief builder — names that deserve an award of their own!

Many stories told of squirrels making mini replicas of their bridges from sticks, twigs, and leaves for the Connétable to study while others warned of ‘evil monster cars’ and ‘fast cars’. In Unathi’s story his squirrels suggested a stable bridge with a roof using lightningproof materials like copper, aluminium, and steel, and a waterproof floor — impressive planning indeed!

Many stories reflected on humans and how squirrels live alongside them. Mathilda's story included home comforts — her squirrel mum served a steaming bowl of chestnut stew, her favourite! Others reminded us that bridges should blend with the environment; while some suggested more adventurous alternatives — zip lines or even a water slide.

Every story brought something special — humour, heart, imagination, or adventure — and together they showcased the creativity and talent of our young parish writers.

Thank you again to everyone who entered — your stories made this competition a joy to judge.

Furry Friends Caring for our

We are lucky to see red squirrels in Jersey.

They’re the only type of squirrel on the Island and are a protected species. You will often see them scurrying around gardens and woodlands in search of food - a significant part of their daily routine.

S

quirrels are highly adaptable and adjust their diet as the seasons change. In spring, they eat shoots and buds, and with the abundance of berries and seeds in autumn – squirrels will forage and enjoy these nutrient-rich foods. That’s why you’ll see them much more around this time of year; they’re eating, collecting and storing food, preparing for winter.

Our squirrels follow a structured, stage-based process designed to develop essential survival skills during rehabilitation. The baby stage focuses on keeping them warm and comfortable while they rely solely on bottle feeding. Next is the junior squirrel enclosure, where the squirrels gain independence under supervision, practice climbing and balancing on branches, and try a variety of natural foods.

Once our care team are confident with their progress, the squirrels advance to the squirrel runs – a large space filled with soil, trees, and hay. Here, their natural instincts sharpen: they build dreys high in the trees from hay and twigs and start to bury and store food.

These skills are critical for survival before release. Our final stage is soft release. At our designated soft release site, squirrels are fully independent, though food is still provided until they adapt and locate natural resources. Each squirrel leaves the soft release site at its own pace and establishes its own territory.

Red squirrels do not hibernate but their activity slows down, so we’ll see them a lot less during winter. They’ll rely on their well-stocked food caches to survive the cold winter months. Squirrels forage on the ground for fallen seeds and nuts, but being so close to busy roads and footpaths make them vulnerable to accidents and injury, with St Saviour’s Hill and La Route de la Hougue Bie being identified as blackspots!

How can you help squirrels this winter?

If squirrels visit your garden, you can set up special squirrel feeders that are extra tall or placed higher up in trees to help them access food safely. This may also reduce the worry around feeding uninvited guests such as rats.

You can fill your feeders with squirrel mix. They will also enjoy what you put in your bird feeders. Once squirrels start finding food, they'll return daily for more. Remember to offer only small amounts, as you are supplementing their diet, not replacing it. Don’t forget to provide fresh water and change it daily throughout winter to prevent freezing and grime build up.

Squirrels at the JSPCA Every year, we receive lots of calls to help injured and orphaned red squirrels. Some arrive as road traffic casualties, others as abandoned infants. So far in 2025, we have admitted 35 squirrels, including 10 abandoned babies. Our wildlife carers look after these babies around the clock, providing bottle feeds, daily weighing, and keep a close, caring eye on them until they begin eating independently.

you are not alone. To say that the year has been unprecedented is somewhat of an understatement.

T

he number of queens reported in the spring, with the majority trapped by volunteers in official traps, was at record levels, nearly five times any previous year.

Since the spring there have been several thousand reports of worker hornets across the island and the numbers of nests so far in 2025 is more than double that of the whole of 2024 already, standing at 539 at the time of writing in early October versus 262 nests in 2024.

In the parish of St Saviour, you have not been immune to this upsurge in Asian hornets. For those who are not comfortable with buzzy, stingy things these numbers may be a concern, and indeed more people have been stung by Asian hornets this year than any other. The main risk is of nest disturbance rather than an individual foraging hornet, with gardeners the largest group at risk as they strim and hedge-cut.

Beekeepers will also be particularly concerned as the predominant portion of the diet of Asian hornets is honeybees. This year beekeepers have found their hives under great pressure and have had to deploy various protection measures to limit the detrimental effects of the Asian hornets. Apart from carrying off dismembered honeybees to feed to their developing larvae, the hornets cause honeybee colonies to go into ‘foraging paralysis’, when they stop doing what bees are supposed to be doing: gathering nectar and pollen and generally being busy bees.

The result is weaker honeybee colonies that are at greater risk of dying out during the winter. Fortunately, beekeepers can help their bees along with various devices and management techniques, but with the best strategy being to find the Asian hornet nest causing the issue and have it destroyed.

For the future, we have to accept that Asian hornets are here to stay, but is the huge level of work to control them sustainable? The logistical issues of dealing with so many reports, processing them efficiently and destroying any nests have been extreme. Many of the numerous nests are in difficult locations requiring specialist equipment and skills to deal with them and sometimes occasional road closures and marshalling of the public needed also.

As the season draws to a close, and we can begin the process of reflecting on this year and what it means for the future, the public of Jersey can still play their part. Reports of Asian hornets should be reported to asianhornet@gov.je.

If you spot any nests in the trees, now that the leaves have fallen, please do report that as it may be a nest that we were not aware of. Brightly 100 Years

Celebrations Brightly, formerly Brig-y-Don Children’s Convalescent and Holiday Home, has been celebrating a 100 years of supporting children in Jersey with events ranging from planted flower displays in the Howard Davis and The Lower Park courtesy of the Parish of St Helier; flying of the Brightly flags all over the island and the publication of an original book launched at St Clement’s Primary School and given to children in Years 1 and 2 islandwide.

Be Safe, Be Seen

Road Safety Week 2025 This November saw Jersey once again take part in Brake’s annual Road Safety Week. The theme for 2025 was ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’, reminding all of us of the importance of visibility when travelling in the darker winter months.

he Infrastructure and Environment Department, together with Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) and the States of Jersey Police (SoJP), delivered a programme of events and activities under the framework of Building a Safer Community. The focus was staying safe in low-light conditions, whether walking, cycling, riding a moped, or driving.

Two special events were held, one at Brig-y-Don House for people with a connection to the home, the other at Government House in June where many memories were shared and old friendships renewed.

The centenary will end with the planting of a time capsule at Brig-yDon House to be opened in another 100 years.

School Assemblies

Saying Goodbye After 46 Years

Key Stage 2 pupils across the island took part in special ‘Be Safe Be Seen’ assemblies and each child received a reflective slap band to encourage safer journeys.

The centenary year will see the retirement of its longest serving member of staff Allison le Blancq after 46 years.

“My 46-year journey with Brig-y-Don Children’s Charity began in 1979 with a one-year role in the playgroup.

The wonderful staff showed me what it was to be part of a caring, fun, supportive team who looked after and advocated for the children, unable to be with their families, with such compassion that I am still with the charity.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff and Board members I have worked with over the years.

It has been a privilege to work for such an invaluable charity,” she said.

To reach drivers, SoJP carried out night-time vehicle light checks supported by the Comité des Chefs de Police.

For Year 12 riders, DVS offered free safety inspections of mopeds and motorcycles. These checks focused on ensuring lights and indicators were working properly, and advice was given on maintenance and replacing bulbs.

Alongside these activities, the Jersey Road Safety Hub (www. jerseyroadsafety.je) was updated with new guidance and refreshed its ‘Be Safe Be Seen’ information.

By working together – schools, young riders, motorists and the wider community – we can all play a part in reducing risks on our roads this winter.

So, as the evenings draw in, remember the simple rule: If you’re out and about – Be Safe, Be Seen.

In a stable in Bethlehem, some very important people came for a very special event. Mary and Joseph had come from very far away and were very tired. They couldn’t find anywhere to stay the night.

Mary was expecting a baby at any time.

After the shepherds had heard about this little baby, they went to the stable to see for themselves. A beautiful bright star shone above the stable. Three Kings from far away saw the star in the sky as well, and they followed it mounted on their camels, just as far as the stable.

They brought with them presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The Marshalls took over after the unexpected loss of Gaynor’s mother, Sadie Le SueurRennard, in 2022. They focus on caring for the land and wildlife while preserving the herd’s genetic integrity.

What & Where Am I? The St Saviour Victorian Wall Postal Box

Correct! I am a post box, but not just any old post box! I am a piece of postal history in the heart of our parish. I am a striking reminder of Victorian innovation – a rare wall mounted post box from the 19th century and I’m nestled into the boundary wall of St Saviour’s Parish Church, just by the roadside on St Saviour’s Hill.

T

his post box, officially designated Post Box No. 15, was cast between 1861 and 1871 by Smith & Hawkes of Birmingham, one of the key foundries producing post boxes during Queen Victoria’s reign. It proudly displays the “VR” cipher, standing for Victoria Regina, and is one of only four surviving examples of its kind in Jersey. Recognised for its historic importance, it is a listed artefact, protected as part of our local heritage.

Many parishioners pass it daily, perhaps without realising just how significant - and scarce - it is. This simple red box has silently served generations of islanders, through wars, coronations, and countless changes in society, technology, and communication.

Jersey’s Role in Postal History Jersey holds a special place in British postal heritage. In 1852, the island was chosen for a pilot scheme to trial pillar-style mail boxes - a revolutionary idea proposed by postal surveyor (and future novelist) Anthony Trollope.

Prior to this, letters could only be posted by taking them directly to a post office. The introduction of public pillar boxes made mailing far more accessible, and the Channel Islands became the birthplace of what is now a defining feature of British streetscapes.

Interestingly, the original boxes were painted olive green to blend in with their surroundings - a colour choice that proved unpopular. By 1874, the now-familiar pillar-box red was officially adopted, ensuring they stood out clearly to the public.

Preserving the Past Sadly, none of those original 1852 pillar boxes survive in Jersey today (although Guernsey retains one). However, in rural parishes several wall boxes remain - but ours is among the most significant!

That humble red box in the church wall isn’t just functional - it’s a rare and valuable relic, a little piece of the Victorian era still quietly doing its job in the 21st century.

So next time you pass the Parish Church, take a moment to admire Post Box No. 15 - a small but proud monument to St Saviour’s place in postal history.

The Grands Vaux Memorial Cross FURTHER INFORMATION

Thank you to those who contacted me with further information about the monument at Grands Vaux following the last edition of La Cloche. Here is an update.

I

n November 2021 Richard Le Quesne, Procureur du Bien Public, was asked to investigate the ownership of the small triangular piece of land on which the Grands Vaux Memorial Cross stands.

His careful research has helped to clarify much of its history and ownership.

The land lies at the junction of Deloraine Road and Grands Vaux Road, each side of the triangle measuring roughly five metres.

The monument itself was erected in memory of Bridget Riley (née Hanbury), the first wife of Christopher Riley, who was tragically killed in a riding accident there in 1928.

According to family anecdote, when Mrs Riley fell from her horse, she was carried into the mill and laid on the billiard table — which was damaged in the process and later had to be re-covered! Jim also recalled that the cross was vandalised at one stage and subsequently taken to Trinity Manor for safekeeping. He added that the late Sir Peter Crill, then Bailiff of Jersey, once asked him about it and may have played a role in its reinstatement at the site.

Thanks to these combined insights, the story of the Grands Vaux Memorial Cross is now much clearer — a testament not only to careful research, but also to the memories and generosity of parishioners who help keep our local history alive.

It seems likely that Christopher’s father, John Athelstan Riley, purchased the surrounding field — known as Le Petit Clos de St Sauveur ou Côtil du Pré — in December 1928 for the purpose of erecting a memorial to his daughter-in-law. Five years later, in 1933, he sold the remainder of the field but specifically excluded a small triangular section in the north-east corner, described in the deeds as ‘the strip of land on which has been erected a commemorative cross’, which he expressly reserved.

From that point on, the cross and its small plot remained with the Riley family, while the surrounding field changed hands several times. The 1954 and 1980 property transactions both make clear reference to this exclusion, confirming that the triangular plot with the cross continued to belong to the family.

In 1996, Major John Riley, then owner of Trinity Manor, sold the manor and most of its land, and it is thought that around this time the cross was returned to its original site, having previously been kept in the manor chapel. When Major Riley died in 1998, his will passed his remaining property to J Riley Investments Limited, which the following year sold the small plot, in equal shares, to his two daughters — Bridget Mary Riley (now Mainwaring-Burton) and Anna Louise Riley (now Bradstock). In December 2021, Anna Bradstock confirmed that she and her sister still jointly own the land.

The research concludes that there is no evidence that this plot has ever belonged to the Parish.

‘Jacques’ Occupation Chronicles

Part 3 - Continuing the occupation experiences of “Jacques” as related to Geoffrey Morris in the late 1970s.

With major defence fortifications being built around the island there were forced labour workers of which many harassing stories and documentation have been compiled over the years.

A

longside these but working under completely different conditions were young resident men, usually not born in the Island but having arrived in their early years. As has been recounted, Jacques fell into this category and seeing the opportunity of earning some money in assisting in the construction of the fortifications, the following story related by him to me arose after a searching question regarding as to how early in the morning their work commenced.

This particular story centred around the construction of the sea wall along the Five Mile Road. Jacques would arrive at the weighbridge at about 5-30 a.m. and a bus (may have been an open char-à-banc) would take the assembled group and drop them off in the vicinity of the Watersplash area. As they vacated the bus they were given a folding shovel and proceeded in the direction of the sea wall works. That is everyone with the exception of one who would crouch under the rear seat and catch up on lost sleep while the others worked. Jacques told me that there was never a headcount either on entering or vacating the bus.

The bus remained at the site for the duration of the day, and at about midday the working party would return to eat their packed lunch on the bus. The fresh from sleep member then re-joined the group for food and proceeded to go back to work with the rest after their repast.

Whilst Jacques and his colleagues did not want to risk any obvious opposition to the occupying forces, they did have certain resentment to them and after a day’s work on their return to the bus the German soldier collecting the folding spades always collected less than he had handed out. Those not handing a spade in told him that another soldier had relieved them of the tools. However in reality the spades had been placed in the folded position and buried in the sand dunes about 2 feet deep.

Jacques told me that to all intents and purposes some of them could still be there in the vicinity of the Watersplash. Following on from this episode in his life, Jacques was seconded to interesting work in the vicinity of Gorey Village which will be recounted in the next issue of La Cloche.

Our Organ: Past, Present and Future

St Saviour’s: A Growing Centre for Choral Music

St Saviour’s first organ was installed in 1842, with later instruments built in 1870 and again at the turn of the 20th century.

St Saviour’s is steadily building a reputation as a centre for choral music.

T

he present organ, which incorporates pipework from those earlier instruments, has been refurbished several times - in 1926, 1963, 1987 and 2005 - with further work carried out on the bellows and wind system.

Today it comprises 23 ranks of pipes across two manuals, with mixtures, couplers and pistons. The most urgent need is an overhaul of the ageing electronics, while future plans include extending the pipework so that every stop can sound across the full range of the keyboard.

longside the Amity Singers and the Feel Good Choir, the church has welcomed Trinity College Choir and The Gentlemen of St John’s, Cambridge, in partnership with Music in Action. Musical Originals have also rehearsed here ahead of their acclaimed appearances at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod. More recently, the chapel choir of Ardingly College sang at a Sunday service, with one of their organists now serving as Senior Organ Scholar at Pembroke College, Cambridge.

The latest addition to this distinguished list was a group of Oxford Choral Scholars. Over the weekend of 30–31 August, the Parish Church hosted their first public performance together, which also raised funds for the Church Organ Fund.

Young Visitors to Our Congregation In September, St Saviour’s Parish Church had the great pleasure of welcoming a group of wonderfully talented pupils from St Michael’s Preparatory School to celebrate the Feast Day of St Michael and All Angels (Michaelmas).

The Oxford Choral Scholars

This talented group of Oxford University students included two from Jersey: Sydney Haskins, winner of the top prize at the Young Musician of the Year 2023, and Jack Bowley, formerly a chorister at King’s College, Cambridge and then a music scholar at Eton College. The singers, drawn from the chapel choirs of The Queen’s, Merton, Magdalen, and Exeter Colleges, together with an Organ Scholar from The Queen’s, delighted audiences with a varied programme of sacred and secular music.

Their debut concert on Saturday evening featured works by Rheinberger, Palestrina, Duruflé, Monteverdi, and Elgar, alongside lighter repertoire including Stanford’s Bluebird and a lively arrangement of the Jackson 5’s I Want You Back. On Sunday, the group led worship at the Sung Eucharist and Choral Evensong, performing Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices, Stanford’s Beati Quorum Via, and other choral treasures.

This memorable weekend will be remembered as a milestone in St Saviour’s growing choral tradition.

Toby has a gift for finding the human heartbeat in the historical record. One tale in particular stopped us in our tracks: the life of Barbara Impey, who died in Sydney, Australia in 1926 after a lifetime of self-denial and silence.

Toby traced her origins back to St Saviour’s. She was an illegitimate daughter of the then Rector of St Saviour’s and Dean of Jersey, Corbet Le Breton, and Marianne Impey Treeve, granddaughter of a Peninsular War veteran. Barbara Toby Clyde-Smith – storyteller extraordinaire! was sent to the other side of the world with £1,000 and two instructions: never return and never spend the money while she could still work. She obeyed both, dying in poverty while her small fortune lay untouched, she didn’t spend any of it. Poignantly, her half-sister Emilie, Lillie Langtry, was a celebrity of international renown. Two lives, one family, and worlds apart - the two half-sisters both died oblivious to the other’s existence.

Parish Social Event

Close to 300 parishioners of the Catholic Church in Jersey gathered at Coronation Park, Millbrook, on Sunday 28th September, for a Parish social event, which was organised by the Parish Pastoral Council.

T

he aim was to bring all Island parishioners together for food and fellowship. To guard against any inclement weather we hired a marquee with tables and chairs, with our costs covered by generous donations from parishioners.

We started with the celebration of Mass, led by Canon Dominic and Fr Ambrose, which was a beautiful occasion to come together and give thanks for our wonderful Parish. Everyone was in good voice joining in the hymns, and an extended sign of peace was a highlight for many.

Mass was followed by a sharing lunch where parishioners shared their picnic food with those on their table and surrounding tables.

It proved to be a veritable feast and an excellent way to get to know one another and to try some different cuisines!

During and after lunch we enjoyed various entertainments in the form of a sociable quiz, a talent show and a competition to draw portraits of our two priests. After lunch we held some fun sports races for the children who were presented with medals and sweets. Then the results of the quiz, drawing competition and talent show were revealed and prizes were given out. We hope very much to repeat this event in future years as all who attended said how much they had enjoyed it!

St Vincent De Paul Food Bank The SVP Foodbank, the largest in Jersey, continues its Mission to support the most vulnerable in our society. Following on from the previous article one of their future plans is now in operation.

A new Branch has been set up at St Peter’s Church, in the west of the Island, in collaboration with the Reverend Robert Harris. It will be on Friday lunchtimes between 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm on a Click and Collect basis.

Warm Hearts, Warm Church The season of autumn has drifted away and therefore the clocks have decided that we should be in the dark longer daily!

s the temperatures fall slowly, we are delighted here at Georgetown with our economic and eco-friendly new boilers providing literally a warm welcome for the congregation on a Sunday morning. Our many community groups too feel the benefit in whatever part of the building they use. Before you come inside the Church the newly painted front facade makes you aware of the new colour scheme - so attractive - and also the hallway development. Both show that we are alive and well and at work in our mission.

The change of season has finally brought the concert season to an end with the innovation of two afternoon concerts this year - with lovely cakes of course - being very successful. Just a thought, it might prove a good way to begin the 2026 season.

Keep an eye on the adverts as we are aiming high for the 25th anniversary of our Thursday Night is Music Night Concerts.

In January we will once again welcome the Rector and congregation of the Parish Church to join us for our annual Covenant service, a time of personal review and perhaps a perception of future changes and challenges.

All are invited to our soup and carols from 12.00pm on Wednesday 17th December, our carols by candlelight on Sunday 21st December at 4.00pm and family worship at 10.30am on Christmas Day – please bring along an unwrapped gift you have received.

Although it seems very early as I write to print this greeting, we do send all our readers seasonal greetings for Christmas 2025 and all best wishes for 2026.

What if…

…in September 1942 an advertisement appeared in the Islands’ newspapers announcing that, at Adolf Hitler’s command, British-born men and their families were to be deported to Germany.

“All routes to the harbour will be lined by armed troops,” Oberst Knackfuss announces. “Any attempt at disorder must be dealt with immediately. There must be no shooting. Unruly demonstrators must be detained, that’s all…”

The deportation notices are duly served and, to Knackfuss’s dismay, on 14 September, noisy crowds line the principal routes to the harbour to watch the deportees board the steamer La France for St Malo. And before the vessel sails with almost 300 detainees, the crowd will have grown to nearly five thousand.

On Pier Road is a gathering of almost two hundred young people who, since they are well away from the route of the deportees, are watched by only a handful of soldiers whose rifles are slung over their shoulders. In the crowd teenager Marguerite Mière begins to sing ‘There’ll always be an England’. Her song is taken up by the crowd with enthusiasm.

Could the unjustified deportation of non-combatant civilians to an unknown fate have been the trigger for an insurrection?

In Jersey, despite his colonel’s rank, Friedrich Knackfuss has not seen action since 1918 and the prospect of having to deploy armed force to quell civilian disorder is not one he wishes to contemplate. However, he has rarely seen Coutanche so angry at the notice and was acutely embarrassed when the usually urbane Bailiff accused him of a monstrous breach of faith.

The Islands’ Befehlshaber (commander in chief) in Guernsey, Generalmajor Erich Müller has been unhelpful. “You’re dealing with unarmed civilians, Friedrich, for God’s sake!”

No-one knows who it is who throws the first stone but clearly many of the youngsters have filled their pockets with pebbles and pieces of brick. A stone strikes the helmet of a German soldier standing guard on the roadway below. Before the Germans can react, a hail of missiles falls down on them, knocking several from their feet. A soldier, Schütze Küpfler, unslings his rifle, intending to fire a warning shot above the heads of the throng, many of whom are his own age. However, Küpfer panics and pulls the trigger. The heavy Mauser K98k, its muzzle actually pointing downwards, fires. The bullet hits the road and ricochets into the crowd, hitting sixteen years old Daphne Le Bailly in the thigh. She falls to the ground screaming.

The crowd howls its fury but faced with alarmed soldiers holds back.

However, in the crowd one youngster draws back a catapult which is powerful enough, when firing a ball bearing, to kill a rabbit at 15 yards. Schütze Küpfer advances towards the crowd, his action entirely humanitarian since he is horrified to have shot someone, even by accident.

t What If… PART 2 Daphne Le Bailly is lying on the road, moaning. As Küpfer bends over her, he is struck by a ball bearing fired just a few feet away. The bearing penetrates his skull above his eye and embeds itself in the soft tissue of his brain. In agony, Schütze Küpfer stumbles and falls. His colleagues cannot believe what they see. Despite the heavy Mausers the Germans are overwhelmed and punched and kicked to the ground in a frenzy of blows that their thick uniforms and helmets are helpless to deflect. Too late the crowd realises what is happening and suddenly they break and run, scattering in all directions, leaving four blood-soaked bodies lying in the roadway and a still moaning Daphne Le Bailly whose flesh wound is bleeding freely.

More armed Germans arrive on the scene. What they are unprepared for is four German soldiers and a teenage girl lying in the road, all bleeding profusely.

All the injured are bundled into vehicles and rushed to the General Hospital. Schütze Küpfer is pronounced dead on arrival. Daphne Le Bailly is treated alongside the injured soldiers.

La France sails for St Malo that evening with 280 deportees.

Oberst Friedrich Knackfuss is outraged. Schütze Küpfer was killed by a ball bearing probably fired by a catapult found in a gutter at the scene. Bailiff Coutanche is summoned and receives a severe dressing down and threatened with dire consequences.

At 6.00 pm the hostages are freed and Mrs Le Messurier and her daughter are undergoing interrogation at the Feldkommandantur. Bailiff Coutanche insists the girl be legally represented but Knackfuss refuses. “This is entirely a military matter, Mr Bailiff.”

Within a matter of weeks Mrs Le Messurier and her daughter, have been transported to France, their sentences and ultimate fate unknown. Despite Bailiff Coutanche’s persistent enquiries and protests, he is unable to discover their fate.

They would be swept up by the notorious Nacht und Nebel (Night and Fog) decree of December 1941 whereby prisoners became property of the German state and could be made to disappear, usually to a death camp.

The foregoing is fiction, but could this have happened?

“But we are talking about a crowd of almost two hundred youngsters,” Coutanche protests. “How will we ever find out who fired that ball bearing?”

“You must, Mr Bailiff,” Knackfuss replies. “Behlshaber, Generalmajor Müller, is most insistent and demands 20 hostages whose lives will be forfeit if the perpetrator is not forthcoming within seven days. I suggest that you publicise this action in The Evening Post.”

“If the perpetrator is found, what will happen to him?”

Although Bailiff Coutanche has a sickening apprehension of the perpetrator’s fate.

“That will be decided by the Militärgericht,” Knackfuss replies coldly. “We are not barbarians, Mr Bailiff.”

Following the rounding up of 20 hostages and publicity in The Evening Post, the morning before the German ultimatum expires, Mrs Edith Le Messurier appears at the Town Hall with her fifteenyear-old daughter Eunice and asks to see the Connétable. In the presence of Connétable Cuming and his Chef de Police, a tearful Eunice Le Messurier admits that it was she who fired the deadly ball bearing with her brother’s catapult.

ONE DIABETES DIAGNOSIS EVERY DAY IN JERSEY In almost all of its publicity, and even at the foot of many of the letter written from Diabetes Jersey will use the phrase that “every day one more person in Jersey acquires diabetes”.

This is statistically accurate since the number each year is circa 400, i.e. around one every day.

Why does this happen?

Diabetes is all about sugar in the blood and occurs when the body becomes incapable of controlling how much sugar our blood is prepared to accept. Fortunately for most of us, our pancreas produces the hormone insulin which automatically regulates glucose levels in our blood.

Just what stimulates the pancreas in some people either to stop abruptly producing insulin or to slow down its production is not known. Therefore, there is no way we can prevent it.

No-one has yet invented a vaccine and Type 1 diabetes (where the pancreas stops producing insulin completely) can strike children as young as two or three years old.

What we consume can have a significant impact. If we knowingly adopt a lifestyle to which our body objects – putting on weight is the most obvious objection – then achieving well-being becomes more difficult. Sugar exists in almost everything we consume, e.g., fructose in fruit, lactose in dairy products and glucose generally.

While there is no early detection of Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 can be detected with a simple blood test and if detected early enough, can be managed, and even reversed.

However your lifestyle leading you down a path to Type 2 diabetes , is the very last thing you want.

Today managing Type 1 diabetes with insulin injections is commonplace.

Type 2 diabetes, which occurs as the pancreas progressively produces less insulin, while not actually preventable, can be managed and diminished, either by diet or medication and particularly by the way in which we live.

Many elements of our adult lifestyle can increase the risk of acquiring Type 2 diabetes, e.g., being overweight, not exercising, drinking to excess and smoking. What’s more, already having diabetes in the family also increases that risk.

In Jersey around 4,500 people have diabetes of which around ten per cent are Type 1.

The Importance of Flu and COVID-19 Vaccinations

As winter arrives, it’s crucial to think about keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe from illness. Two viruses that pose a risk to Islanders during winter are influenza and COVID-19. By increasing our defences through vaccination, our bodies are more able to fight off these viruses.

Side effects are usually limited to some soreness or redness at the injection site. “Serious side effects are rare and are much less common than the complications from the illnesses themselves.”

Why Vaccination is Crucial

With regular COVID-19 boosters and other vaccines being offered over the last few years, some may feel exhausted by the idea of another. Prof. Bradley urges us to consider the broader picture: “These are serious diseases, and the viruses causing them are constantly changing. By getting vaccinated, you are not only protecting yourself but also those around you.

Someone infected with flu could infect another four people.”

Both flu and COVID-19 can be serious for many Islanders. According to Professor Peter Bradley, Director of Public Health and Medical Officer for Health, “Most people who get COVID-19 or flu experience mild illness, but some can develop severe disease.” This includes older people, young children, and those with conditions where the immune system may not be as strong, like heart or lung disease.

“The more people who are vaccinated, the less these viruses circulate, giving better protection for people with weaker immune systems and ensuring the health system can continue to function.” explains Prof. Bradley.

What’s in the Vaccines, and How Do They Work?

Both vaccines help the immune system build defences.

They contain weakened proteins from the virus, allowing the immune system to develop a response without exposing us to the full virus. This means that if we do encounter the virus, our bodies are better prepared to fight it off quickly, helping us avoid serious illness. Over time, viruses mutate and our immunity wanes which is why booster doses are necessary. While not all vaccines prevent infection, they do significantly reduce the severity of the illness and risk of long-term complications.

Vaccine Safety Vaccine safety is a common concern for some, especially given the speed at which COVID-19 vaccines were developed. Prof. Bradley emphasises, “COVID-19 vaccines went through the same rigorous testing as other vaccines but was done at speed thanks to advancements in technology. These vaccines have been administered to hundreds of millions of people, with their safety closely monitored.”

Understanding Vaccine Fatigue

Defending Our Island Community High vaccination rates in Jersey have helped us avoid outbreaks of illnesses seen in other places like measles.

Prof. Bradley notes, “When Islanders choose to be vaccinated, the entire community is protected.”

“If you’re unsure about getting a flu or COVID-19 vaccine, a simple first step is to check your eligibility on gov.je or consult your GP. In most cases, they will reassure you that vaccination is safe and highly beneficial.”

It’s Never Too Late The Royal Society for Public Health emphasises that it’s never too late to get vaccinated. Even if you’ve missed previous doses, it is still beneficial to protect yourself going forward.

Take a proactive step to defend your health and the wellbeing of your loved ones this winter. Getting vaccinated means fewer days spent ill and more time enjoying the season.

Delivering more than Healthcare – the Social Value of the new Acute Hospital In my previous quarterly updates on the progress of the New Healthcare Facilities Programme (NHFP), I have focused on key developments and milestones. However, this Programme is about more than just bricks and mortar – it is about creating lasting benefits for Jersey that extend well beyond the enhanced healthcare services enabled by the new buildings and infrastructure.

What is Social Value – and why does it matter?

I confess, Social Value is not something that meant a lot to me as a phrase before I started working as a Minister.

Here, it refers refers to the broader positive impact a project can have on society beyond its core purpose.

These are all part of a business case for a project that tries to communicate not just the cost of a project, but also the benefits, including Social Value. For the NHFP, this means making sure that every pound invested not only delivers new healthcare infrastructure, but also supports jobs, skills development, community wellbeing, and environmental sustainability, locally and also globally.

Social value is considered in every procurement across the Programme, ensuring that benefits are measurable and meaningful. Contractual commitments will deliver long-lasting improvements for Jersey – during construction and into the future. This is a Government of Jersey requirement for all procurements and the NHF Programme is taking it very seriously.

The Programme has committed to 19 areas for Social Value that are aligned with Jersey’s Common Strategic Policy and the Future Jersey vision, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Social value in action – Jersey Demolition Contractors

In addition, JDC donated more than £13,000 worth of demolition waste from the site, including timber to local charities to support the circular economy.

Constructing Your Success The Constructing Your Success education outreach programme, which ran in October 2024, was designed to inspire young people to explore careers inconstruction and the built environment. Delivered as a partnership between the NHFP team and Skills Jersey, the initiative aimed to build students’ confidence, skills, and awareness of the wide range of careers available within the sector.

During the programme, the team hosted a week of sessions tailored for students in Years 7 to 11. A total of 12 sessions were delivered, supported by 19 volunteers – including the NHFP team and professionals from contractors working on the NHFP – who collectively contributed 136 hours of their time. The programme included creative engineering challenges, project management tasks, and insights into roles such as quantity surveying, architecture, and electrical engineering.

Feedback from the week was overwhelmingly positive.

Of the 23 students who attended, 91% reported feeling inspired to pursue a career in construction by the end of the programme.

Much of the social value activity will be confirmed once a Main Works Delivery Partner has been appointed, however meaningful social value is already being achieved through contracts already awarded. For example, social value was fully embraced by Jersey Demolition Contractors (JDC) during the demolition of more than 20 buildings and associated structures at Overdale.

Amongst other social value, JDC added: • more than 200 hours volunteering towards biodiversity at Overdale, including planting and replacing hedgerows that were damaged by Storm Ciarán • sub-contracted work as part of the demolition project to at least 10 local companies • provided more than 300 hours of training and development as part of the Overdale demolition contract, enhancing the knowledge and skills of the existing workforce • employed six people facing barriers or challenges to employment to work on site.

A long-term commitment to Jersey I want to stress that social value is not a one-off effort – it is a long-term commitment. The Programme’s approach includes monthly monitoring, quarterly reviews, and annual reporting with all parties involved in the Programme (including professional advisors) to ensure that objectives are met, and lessons are learned.

This structured and robust approach ensures that social value is delivered consistently and meaningfully throughout the life of the Programme. As described here, it’s not just the Programme’s contractors who contribute towards the social value initiatives, but the Government of Jersey Programme team, too.

A highlight for many of the children was a visit, and a chance to sit inside one of the Jersey Rally Cars who visited before the annual race event.

DO Check and clean your drains and gutters Ensure your gutters and surface water drains are free of debris, particularly after heavy rain.

Maintain watercourses If a stream or watercourse runs through your property, keep it clear to ensure the free flow of water and prevent upstream flooding.

Help with road gullies If you notice a road gully covered with leaves or debris, and wet weather is on the way, please clear it to help water drain properly.

Drive carefully through flooded areas If flooding occurs, slow down when driving through these areas to avoid making the flooding worse or splashing pedestrians.

Don’t rush to report flooded gullies

After completing branchage or bank maintenance, ensure any cuttings are fully cleared from the road.

Leaves, twigs, and branches can block drainage systems.

After heavy rainfall, give gullies time to handle the excess water. Flooding during heavy rain does not always mean a blockage; it often just takes time to drain.
