Hello and Welcome

to the summer edition of La Cloche I am delighted to welcome you to the summer edition of our parish magazine - and especially pleased that it made it safely into your hands, as there was a moment when it very nearly didn’t!

A

few weeks ago, my laptop suffered a sudden and dramatic crash, threatening to take the entire edition with it.

Thankfully, thanks to modern technology and some expert help, everything was recovered and normal service resumed. It certainly added a little unexpected excitement to the production process.

The past three months have also been particularly busy with the election campaign gathering pace from mid-April onwards. By the time you read this, the results will be well known, and while I was not successful in the election, I would like to sincerely thank the 1,031 parishioners who placed their trust in me on 7 June.

Your support has been greatly appreciated.

Although I will not be serving in elected office, I remain committed to our parish and look forward to continuing my various voluntary roles, including editor of this magazine. It is a privilege to help share the stories, achievements and events that make our community so special.

On page 36, you will find a special tribute to Christine and Mike Marett, who between them have dedicated more than 102 years of service to Scouting. Their remarkable commitment to generations of young people is truly inspiring.

The annual Church Fête is featured on page 52, and I would like to extend sincere thanks to the Fête Committee for organising another enjoyable and successful community event.

I hope you enjoy this summer edition as much as I have enjoyed bringing it together. My thanks, as always, go to my editorial colleagues Colin and Cara for their continued support, enthusiasm and friendship.

For most of us, voting simply involved turning up at the polling station and casting our ballots. It is easy to overlook the considerable work that took place behind the scenes to ensure the day ran smoothly. A huge thank you must therefore go to all the parish staff, depot staff, our Honorary Police and many volunteers whose professionalism, dedication and hard work helped make the election day run smoothly.

would like to sincerely thank everyone who took the time to vote in this election. Whether you supported me, Kevin, Suzie, or just your favourite Senator, your engagement helps strengthen our parish and Jersey as a whole.

Standing for public office requires commitment, dedication and a genuine desire to serve others, which I have seen in my fellow candidates and would like to thank them for a well fought contest. Throughout the campaign, I had the opportunity to meet many residents, hear different perspectives and learn more about the issues that matter most to parishioners. Those conversations have been invaluable and will continue to shape my work in the years ahead.

Having spent more than 20 years serving within the Honorary Police, it is a privilege to continue that service in a new capacity.

Public service has played a fundamental part of my life, and I am grateful for the trust that you have placed in me.

As your Constable, my commitment is simple: to serve all parishioners fairly, openly and with integrity. I will be visible, approachable and will listen. While we may not always agree on every issue, I firmly believe that we all share a common goal ensuring that St Saviour remains a welcoming, vibrant and caring parish for everyone.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my family, friends, supporters and volunteers. Their encouragement, advice and hard work throughout the campaign have meant more than I can say.

Thank You, Kevin As St Saviour prepares to bid farewell to our outgoing Connétable, Kevin Lewis, parishioners, the staff of the Parish Hall and Parish Depot, together with the members of the Honorary Police, would like to express our heartfelt thanks for his many years of dedicated service to our parish.

F

or 19 years as a Deputy and the past four years as our Connétable, Kevin has been a steadfast and passionate representative of St Saviour. Throughout more than two decades of public service, he has worked tirelessly on behalf of parishioners, always placing the needs of the community at the heart of his decision-making.

The achievements of his long career are simply too numerous to list. Whether representing the parish in the States Assembly, supporting community projects, improving local facilities, or helping to shape the future of St Saviour, Kevin's commitment and enthusiasm have never wavered. His approachable manner, sense of duty and genuine care for residents have earned him the respect and friendship of many.

While we will miss seeing Kevin in his familiar role, we know his contribution to parish life will leave a lasting legacy. On behalf of everyone who has worked alongside him and the many parishioners he has served, we offer our sincere thanks and appreciation.

We wish Kevin and Isabella every happiness, good health and success in the years ahead.

People Have The Power

I am sincerely grateful to the people of St Saviour for placing your trust in me once again by re-electing me as one of your Deputies. Your support means a great deal, and I do not take the responsibility lightly. It is both a privilege and a duty to represent you, and I am thankful for the confidence you have shown in my ability to serve our parish.

The title of my article comes from the 1988 Patti Smith song People Have the Power. It is especially meaningful to me because it is one of the songs sung by the newly named Lavender Choir, an LGBTQ+ choir and allies group that I have helped create over the past year. We are grateful to rehearse in St Saviour’s Parish Church, continuing the welcoming vision championed by former Rector Peter Dyson and supported by Rev. Evans.

Whenever we sing the lyrics, “People have the power to sing, to love, to dream, to vote”, I am reminded of the importance of community participation and public service. I am grateful to everyone who took the time to vote. It is a small but powerful act that helps shape the future we want to see.

I am also inspired by the many people across our parish and island who are coming together through neighbourhood groups, social initiatives and community campaigns. Their collective efforts show that when people work together, they really do have the power to make a difference.

Deputy Robert Parker Dear Parishioners, Thank you to all of you who voted for me and I hope I can repay your confidence with what I believe can be achieved for both our parish and our island.

I look forward to being actively involved with parish matters and the major projects such as the development behind the Parish Hall.

On the island side all of us who have been elected will have to work together to help understand value for money and bringing the cost of our government under control. We can’t continue to incur the current account deficits. We also need to identify those aspects of government that unfortunately contribute to our costof-living pressures and see how we can tackle them.

Lastly how we can reduce the tax burden on Middle Jersey?

I hope that as part of a team, that the next four years will bring about noticeable beneficial changes for all.

Deputy Chris Leck Dear fellow Parishioners I am deeply honoured and grateful for the trust St Saviour's Parishioners have placed in me by voting for me to be a deputy of the Parish. As I made clear throughout my campaign, I wish to represent you as a deputy by acting within a strong competent and efficient government. The many discussions I had with you on your doorsteps and in your homes confirmed that is what you want from me as your deputy representing you in the States Assembly.

For those of you who didn’t vote for me I trust my actions will be such that you are confident I am serving your interests also I will be available to assist the new Connétable in his role of taking over from Kevin as the father of the parish and to work alongside my fellow Deputies of St Saviour. Parish Rates The notices of assessment have now been sent out, your notice of assessment shows the rateable value of the property you owned or occupied on 1 January.

If you have not received your notice of assessment, please contact the Parish Hall on 735864 or email parishhall@ stsaviour.je This year’s Parish Assembly to set the rate for 2026 is due to be held in July. The Parish Rate demands will be sent out shortly after and payment will be required within the following three months – the deadline being towards the end of October.

Chef de Police Paulo Martins As Chef de Police for St Saviour, it is a privilege to serve our Parish and to play a meaningful role in our Liberation Day commemorations.

This year, I had the honour of leading the veterans as part of the Royal British Legion Riders section.

As a serving veteran myself, Liberation Day holds deep significance - a moment to reflect, to remember, and to celebrate the freedom our island enjoys today. Also, Centenier James Hatcher joined the riders club as his first Liberation as a rider.

Field S469

Le Pré et Le Jardin de Devant A new green lung for the Parish

As development continues to enlarge and extend the geographical footprint of Five Oaks and the surrounding area, the preservation of green fields and countryside on our island becomes all the more important. It is this strongly held belief that sparked a local family into action with their recent purchase of field S469.

S

469 provides a glorious expanse of twelve vergées of unspoiled grassland, clearly visible from the busy Princes Tower Road and enjoyed by those using the quiet lanes of La Rue des Friquettes and La Rue de La Houguette.

Referring to the field simply as S469 does not do it justice. Its original and very charming French name was Le Pré et Le Jardin de Devant, which means ‘The Meadow and the Garden in Front’, evoking images of Island tranquility and beauty. Indeed, The Duke of Richmond Map of 1795, held by La Societe Jersiaise, shows that the west half of the field was an orchard.

The new owners of Le Pré et Le Jardin de Devant, one of whom grew up in La Rue des Friuquettes, intend to create that peaceful environment and atmosphere once again. Many islanders probably hold the view that the field has always been designated solely for agricultural purposes, and primarily for the growing of potatoes. However, this is not the case, in the 1960s and 70s the field was set up for sports and recreation. It was enjoyed by local

football teams, as well as by St Michael’s Preparatory School for a whole range of activities, including their Annual Cross Country and School Sports Day. Whilst the field has now laid fallow for close to 18 months, exciting work has been going on around the field perimeter in the last six months, with Trees for Life Jersey providing their expertise and support. On this project they were assisted by the Back to Work team, which provides outdoor practical skills and experience to people out of work but who are looking to re-join the Island’s workforce.

A 275m double-lined native hedge, totalling 1,375 whips, is now planted around the majority of the field, with wooden fencing erected in front. The hedge includes the following range of species:

These broad range of tree species were carefully selected for their ecological value. They will provide nectar for insects in early spring and berries for birds in autumn. In time they will also provide shelter and nesting possibilities for small birds as well as help to reduce soil erosion, thereby mitigating any flooding on the field. Just as importantly, and incumbent on us all, they will act as a carbon store helping to reduce the rate of climate change.

Easter Bonnets, Polished Bonnets - and Plenty of Horsepower

JERSEY OLD MOTOR CLUB at Government House

The Jersey Old Motor Club members with their cars mustered close to Highlands College and departed in convoy for the short distance run to Government House.

T

he weather provided glorious sunshine, and all the beautiful cars were gleaming. There were 34 cars and approximately 80 members and guests who were treated to some delicious refreshments. His Excellency, the Lieutenant Governor, Vice Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd, together with Lady (Doctor) Karen Kyd, welcomed everyone to their home and gardens. They were the judges of the best decorated Easter Car and best Easter Bonnet!

The Reynolds family excelled themselves with the Easter bonnets and included the well-deserved winner, Vanessa Reynolds. Her mother, Josefine, had been very creative. Vanessa’s fiancé, Luke Smith, although not the winner, took pride of place modelling a striking orange number with great panache.

Sir Jerry admitted it had been a very hard decision, but the winner of the Best Decorated Car was the 1935 Morris Model 10/4 Coupe belonging to Vic and Sandra Le Riche, with highly commended for a 1935 AC 16/70 belonging to Mary Du Feu and 1948 Alvis TA 14 belonging to Walter Labey.

The best child’s costume was worn by Alba Roberts. Sir Jerry was warmly thanked and given a Club tie, while Lady Kyd received an Easter egg. On departure there followed a short run to Gorey Common where the cars stayed for half an hour to regroup and give the general public time to view the cars before heading off East and North. Driving through the parishes they found that at St John there was quite a crowd of people by the church to wave them through before arriving at The Greenhills Hotel for a lunch.

Riding the Wave

to Battle 2026

The Committee have had a busy start to the new Battle year. With all the changes to the routes and parade formats last year, a decision was made that we would need to retire our existing chassis, which has served us very well for the last 25 years, but unfortunately is just a little too big for the routes and for our current team numbers. Another chassis has been sourced and is ready to go so all is not lost!

T

his year, the Parish is going surf crazy with our 2026 float based on a Tiki beach bar! We hope to bring some summer surf vibes to the Parade with another bright, colourful and fun float.

How can you help? We are always looking

for new volunteers to join us. There are lots of ways to get involved from choosing costumes, flower making, fund raising and building. We would love to hear from any families in the Parish, especially anyone who has DIY skills that could help with the building! Where is the shed? The shed is just by La Hougue Bie. If you are interested in visiting then please email us for directions.

When do we meet? We meet on Saturday mornings from 10am till lunchtime and when the weather warms up, we also meet one evening a week. There are all sorts of things happening at the shed each week from flower making, construction, painting so lots of new skills to be learnt. One of the biggest jobs is the flower making. They are very easy to make and can be done at home so if you feel like the shed is not the place for you then we can always arrange for flowers to be dropped off. Nothing is impossible in Battle!

If I help, can I take part in the parades? Absolutely!

We have spaces for dancers, walkers and anyone who fancies giving it a go. All costumes are provided and you would need to be available all day on the Friday and from early evening on the Saturday.

How do you fund the float? We are very lucky to receive

financial support from the Parish itself but most of our funds come from fundraising throughout the year and donations.

If any parishioners think they could help with a fundraising idea or maybe you are a company who could offer us some sponsorship (we would put your name on the float) then please let us know. Are you a tractor owner? We would love to hear from any parishioners who might be able to help us out with towing the float on the parade days of 14th and 15th of August.

BaCk oN ThE AvEnUe

It’s free. Bring your own chairs, relax and settle down for the day and night parades!* After a year away, we are delighted to return to Victoria Avenue place where we feel the Battle of Flowers truly belongs.

Following the tremendous success of the scaled down parade through Town in 2025, and after listening carefully to public feedback, we have made a number of important changes for this year’s event — not least the decision to keep both the Day and Night Parades completely free.

By returning the event to Victoria Avenue and extending the arena from Rue de Galet to Lower Park, we can safely and comfortably accommodate even larger crowds, while also providing float builders with the space needed to create the large-scale, imaginative exhibits for which the Battle of Flowers is renowned.

The Day Parade will travel from west to east, while the Night Parade will travel in the opposite direction, from east to west.

The events will be single-pass parades along the southern carriageway of Victoria Avenue.

Day Parade Fri 14th Aug Arena opens at 13:00, with pre-parade entertainment, food and drink available on the laybys between Lower Park and Rue de Galet.

Parade starts at 15:00, single pass from Rue de Galet to Lower Park, where floats will park up for viewing.

Arena closes at 18:00

Moonlight Parade Sat 15th Aug Arena opens at 18:30, again with pre-parade entertainment, food and drink.

At sunset (approx. 21:20), the parade starts from Lower Park, all floats illuminated, and travels to Rue de Galet.

This will be followed by a finale shortly after 22:00 – details yet to be confirmed.

Arena closes at 23:00.

This format offers spectators a fantastic opportunity to enjoy an immersive Battle of Flowers experience along the entire route, from Lower Park to Rue de Galet.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own chairs and settle in along either side of the parade route to enjoy the 29 spectacular floats, marching bands, and entertainers up close with pre-parade performances and live music all completely free of charge along with a wide range of food and drink outlets.

The Night Parade, taking place the following evening, will feature all floats fully illuminated, accompanied once again by bands and entertainers, this time travelling westward from the Lower Park.

Beginning at 8:45pm, spectators can look forward to a spectacular display of lights and entertainment, culminating in a breathtaking finale, details to be confirmed.

A message from the Battle Organisers We are committed to making the Battle of Flowers a free community event from now on and to make sure it is accessible to all.

We are very grateful for the grant funding we have already received.

However, trying to find the final £40,000 in the current financial climate has proven more than a little challenging, so in order to be able to put on the show that Islanders have come to expect, we are asking for your support.

Results Round Up The majority of outgoing ministers have regained their seats in a new States Assembly which mixes youth and experience.

F

ormer Deputies Lyndon Farnham, Ian Gorst, Elaine Millar, Mary Le Hegarat and Tom Binet were returned as Senators, while Constables Andy Jehan, Karen Shenton-Stone and Richard Vibert were re-elected, as were Deputies Carolyn Labey, Kirsten Morel and Lyndsay Feltham.

It was a disastrous night for Reform Jersey, whose longstanding leader, Sam Mézec, the former Housing Minister, lost his seat. Despite topping the poll is his party’s St Helier heartland, he finished tenth with 9,374 votes. Former Education Minister Rob Ward failed in his bid to become St Helier Constable, while Raluca Kovacs lost her Deputy seat in St Saviour.

Former Environment Minister Steve Luce, who has been in the States since 2011 serving 15 years as a Deputy, also lost his seat.

The Best of the Rest Helen Miles topped the Senatorial poll with 15,859 votes. She has been a leading backbencher for the past four years, chairing the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel and spearheading a review of the relationship between central government and the parishes. It is her second term as an Assembly Member, having been elected a Deputy in St Brelade in 2022.

Four of the nine Senatorial seats went to women, including first-time States Member Serena Kersten Guthrie, former captain of the England netball team, who finished fifth.

There will be one other first-time Member on the Senatorial benches. Mark Boleat, founder of think tank Policy Centre Jersey and a former senior figure in the City of London, came eighth, winning a seat on his second attempt. Alan Maclean, a former Senator and minister in the governments of Terry Le Sueur and Ian Gorst, makes a return to the Assembly.

There will be five new faces among the Constables. Steve Pallett makes a return after unseating Mike Jackson in St Brelade, Tina Palmer beat John Le Fondré in St Lawrence and David Curtis ousted Kevin Lewis in St Saviour. The retirement of Simon Crowcroft in St Helier and Philip Le Sueur in Trinity opened the door to Inna Gardiner and Andy Howell respectively.

Soroptimist International Jersey at 75

The Jersey Soroptimists are delighted to celebrate 75 years since the club was set up in the islands in 1950. The first Soroptimist Club was established in 1921 in Oakland, California. Loosely translated from Latin ‘soro’ means sister and ‘optima’ best for, a focus on equality for women and girls and the community is at the heart of all Soroptimist Clubs around the world.

O

ver the decades the Jersey Club has raised and donated thousands of pounds to local charities, and been long time collectors for the Jersey Christmas Appeal and The Royal British Legion Jersey Poppy Appeal.

In the 1950s the Soroptimists were the drive behind Mont à L’Abbé School and the 1980s Club members were the drive behind the Women’s Refuge. In 1994 it was Soroptimists who founded the Jersey Association of Carers.

It promises to be a truly memorable year, with an exciting programme of cultural, historical and artistic events already being planned by Jersey Heritage and other organisations. We look forward to sharing more details with you in the next edition.

When Families Struggle, Their Pets Do Too

It is a sign of the times that food banks have become a lifeline for many in our island community. But while we think of families struggling to make ends meet, it’s easy to forget that their animals are struggling too.

he JSPCA (Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has seen a growing number of people who simply cannot afford to feed their pets - and so, with heavy hearts, they have set up a Pet Pantry. The Pet Pantry is a free, noquestions-asked service. The pantry is based at the shelter and is available during our opening hours. In reception, you’ll find little cards, simply tick what you need, and one of our team will collect the items for you while you wait. The food items will be packed in a little bag for you The shelter is doing everything it can, but it cannot do it alone. The JSPCA receives no guaranteed government funding, and every bag, tin, or box donated truly makes a difference.

Signs of Spring and Summer Hello, the Spring Equinox, which gives us the start of spring in astronomy, passed this year on 20 March, when there was a large crowd at La Hougue Bie to welcome the sun, as has been done for nearly 6,000 years.

The summer solstice, which will give us the longest day of the year, will be 21 June. This year, at the Equinox, there was a small crowd at Faldouet Dolmen (two Jèrriais word spellings), to see if the sun shone there as well. Yes…but there was a mist or light haze which blocked the sun a little. Hopefully there will be enough sun to shine into the tunnel under the mound at La Hougue Bie, a site with so much history over the Ages – ice, stone, bronze, iron. We’re so lucky with our heritage sites, my favourite? It’s ‘The Old Castle’ (as it is well- known in Jèrriais), or Gorey Castle, or Mont Orgeuil. Construction began in 1204 but it wasn’t named until the French were in occupation in 1462 during the War of the Roses, but that’s a story for another day!

A QUIET INVASION!

(And it’s not just from Asian Hornets) We are under attack! Not from our neighbours, but from a quieter, more insidious invasive threat: non native plants, animals, and even pathogens such as viruses and fungi.

These invasions often go unnoticed at first, yet their effects can be far reaching—damaging our environment, disrupting our economy, and even affecting public health and our society.

When a non native species spreads and causes harm, it is classified as an invasive non native species (INNS).

The pathways by which these species arrive are varied, but human activity is a key factor. Through global trade and travel, we have become highly effective at moving organisms around the world. Sometimes introductions are deliberate, such as ornamental plants or exotic pets. More often, however, they are accidental, with species hitchhiking as stowaways on freight, as a contaminant on imported goods or even escaping from captivity.

In Jersey, responsibility for protecting the island from INNS lies with the Biosecurity Team within Natural Environment, often working closely with other departments, including Regulation, the States Vets, and Customs and Excise, as well as with landowners, volunteer groups, the public, and neighbouring jurisdictions. This work is ongoing, dynamic, and collaborative, focused on identifying threats and managing those that pose the greatest risks—both now and in the future.

Some examples of INNS that are under active management in Jersey are the Asian or yellow legged hornet (Vespa velutina), Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica), purple dew plant (Disphyma crassifolium), sour fig (Carpobrotus edulis), and the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa). Others, not yet established but considered likely threats, include the coypu (Myocastor coypus), the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), and the rose ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), amongst many others.

With so many species that could pose a threat there has been a structured process of risk assessment. This began with compiling lists of INNS already present and those likely to arrive in the future. Given the similarities between the islands’ environments and shared risks, collaboration with colleagues in the Bailiwick of Guernsey has been both practical and valuable, contributing to the concept of a “Biosecure Bailiwick.”

Each of the species were assessed based on factors such as its potential rate of spread, ecological and economic impact, and the pathways by which it might be introduced. For high risk species, the next step was to determine whether management is feasible and where it is, strategies are developed, ranging from eradication to long term control, often in partnership with relevant stakeholders.

For species not yet present, there are contingency plans focus on prevention, early detection, monitoring, and rapid response.

You can help by responsibly managing non native plants and animals, such as disposing of garden waste correctly or ensuring unwanted pets are not released into the wild. Staying alert and reporting suspicious sightings is equally important. If you notice a species of concern, you can contact the Biosecurity Team at invasives@ gov.je providing a photograph and location details.

By working together, Jersey can reduce the risks posed by invasive non native species and help protect the island’s unique natural environment.

Highlights from the DIFERA Awards

The recent DIFERA Awards, held at the Jersey Arts Centre, brought together around 200 islanders to celebrate those championing Diversity, Inclusion, Fairness, Equality, Respect and Acceptance across Jersey. Organised by Liberate, the evening was both uplifting and inspiring, shining a light on work that often goes unseen.

Community Support Group update – do you need help, would you like to help?

W

ell now, for the first time in many months I have some great news - we have just taken on two new Volunteers and have had what we hope was a successful chat with two more! We just need their forms completed and their DBS clearance (Disclosure Barring Service), a routine “security” declaration as we go into parishioners’ homes, some of whom may be deemed vulnerable, and as we also handle cash when shopping for them. It’s a long awaited and much needed boost for the Group and will give us more flexibility in the support we can offer.

Among the winners were grassroots collective Divine Creatures, honoured for creating inclusive social spaces, and Tiny Seeds, recognised for its work supporting families.

A particular highlight for our parish was the recognition Deputy Louise Doublet of Louise Doublet, who was named Leader of the Year. Deputy Doublet was honoured for her work on children and civil status legislation, helping to ensure that modern family structures are recognised in law.

Speaking at the event, she said: “I feel extremely grateful to be recognised by the independent judging panel for the many years of work I have done to realise the Children and Civil Status legislation, which recognises modern family structures, including LGBTQ+ families, stepfamilies and those who access fertility treatments.

“Leadership, for me, has always been about quiet hard work, taking an intelligent, evidence-based approach, and being tenacious in advocating for the rights of those who are vulnerable or marginalised.”

Her words captured the spirit of the evening - one of thoughtful leadership and a shared commitment to building a fairer, more inclusive community.

Other awards included Ally of the Year, presented to Alice and Richard Nunn of The Salvation Army, and Inspirational Person of the Year, awarded to Sam Pearce.

Overall, the DIFERA Awards were a powerful reminder of the positive work happening across the island - and of the people, including those from St Saviour, helping to lead the way.

We were formed in April 2020, when our late and dear Sadie knew parishioners would need help during lockdown - remember that word?! – and we have plodded on since then with a very small team of 5 or 6. The aim then was mainly shopping; as restrictions eased we could add transport to/from medical appointments, and since then nothing has really changed as the team hadn’t. So what next? Volunteers can offer as much or as little time as they want, occasional or regular. More volunteers can mean more help available. As volunteers we can’t guarantee it, but we’ll do our best, always have a Plan B for shopping, even if that means a top-up of your iron rations store-cupboard!

Our Group also helps with the occasional Parish function, who knows what will happen socially after our elections? A Parish Day is being planned for August, exciting times we hope…! New Music School to Open in St Saviour

The School of Popular Music (SOPM), the Channel Islands’ largest independent music education provider, has announced plans to open a new flagship campus at Château Vermont in St Saviour this summer.

The campus will include dedicated teaching rooms for a wide range of instruments, as well as spaces for band rehearsals and workshops. A recording studio will allow students to explore music production, while a social hub will give families a place to relax and connect. The overall aim is to provide not just lessons, but a complete musical experience.

he move marks an exciting step forward for music education in Jersey, bringing SOPM’s growing community together under one roof. Designed to meet increasing demand for lessons while creating a vibrant, shared environment, the new campus will offer a dedicated space where students of all ages can learn, collaborate and perform.

Importantly, the new facilities will also support SOPM’s popular seasonal programmes, such as Easter and Summer Schools. With access to outdoor space, these sessions will become even more engaging, offering a balance of music-making, activities and social time in a welcoming environment.

Founded by Tyler Edmonds, SOPM has built its reputation on more than just one-to-one tuition. Its approach centres on three key ideas: opportunity, community and confidence. While individual lessons remain important, students are also encouraged to take part in bands, group sessions and live performances - helping them grow not only as musicians, but as confident individuals.

The new Château Vermont site has been chosen with this vision in mind. By bringing all teaching, rehearsals and programmes into one location, SOPM aims to create a lively, creative hub where music is part of everyday life. Students will be able to hear bands practising, meet fellow musicians and feel part of something bigger.

The Château Vermont campus will cater for all stages of musical development, from young beginners in the “Minis” programme to more advanced students in the Academy. By housing these pathways together, SOPM hopes to create clearer progression routes and stronger connections between students and families.

The transition to the new site will begin this summer and will be carefully managed to avoid disruption. Lessons and programmes will continue as normal during the move, with families kept informed throughout.

Ultimately, the new campus represents more than just a change of location. It reflects a commitment to nurturing Jersey’s musical talent and building a lasting community around it. For many young people - and adults too - it promises to be a place where confidence grows, friendships form, and a lifelong love of music begins.

Turning Pages, Changing Lives: A Call for Volunteer Readers in St Saviour

I recently attended a u3a Talks event at The Old Rectory, and it proved to be one of the most uplifting and thought-provoking afternoons I’ve experienced in some time.

T

he talk brought together four inspiring speakers: Annette Le Bail and Megan Toal from the wonderfully named book club Joie de Livre, alongside their guests Every Child Our Future CEO Cris Lakeman, and Russell Price, Headteacher of Rouge Bouillon School.

We heard about Joie de Livre, which must surely be one of the most delightful book clubs around. Their activities go far beyond simply discussing books - they include social gatherings, themed events, and even an annual trip to Wye. It was clear that their passion for reading is both joyful and infectious.

At a time when we often hear worrying statistics about children and reading - especially during this Year of Reading - it was refreshing to hear so many positive stories about improving literacy among our young people. One sobering moment, however, came when Russell Price pointed out that not all schools have libraries - a reminder of how much work still needs to be done.

Every Child Our Future is currently looking for volunteers in St Saviour to support children in local parish schools, including St Luke’s School, Plat Douet School, and St Saviour’s School. Just a small amount of time each week can make a meaningful difference to a child’s confidence and enjoyment of reading.

It was heartening to see how a shared love of books - across different backgrounds and experiences -ripple outward and create real, lasting change.

If you have a little time to spare and a love of reading, this is a wonderful opportunity to give back to our community. Your time could help turn a page in a child’s life.

Cris Lakeman then spoke about the work of Every Child Our Future, a charity dedicated to improving outcomes for children in Jersey.

One initiative in particular stood out: Story Starters. This nurserybased literacy programme supports children aged 3–4 by providing regular one-to-one reading time with adult volunteers.

Books are the starting point—but the real magic lies in conversation, communication, exploring pictures, and truly listening. These simple interactions help build vocabulary, confidence, and a genuine interest in stories. The aim is both simple and powerful: to foster a lifelong love of reading.

Government House Gardens Open Day

On 19 April, the beautiful gardens of Government House were opened in support of Jersey Association of Youth Friendship (JAYF), by kind permission of His Excellency the LieutenantGovernor, Vice Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd, and Lady Kyd. It was a generous gesture that allowed parishioners and visitors alike to enjoy these remarkable grounds while supporting an important local cause.

The gardens themselves are truly exceptional, extending over some 32 vergees (approximately 12 acres) and encompassing a rich variety of landscapes, from formal lawns to wooded valleys. Among the many features are several commemorative trees marking royal visits and significant occasions. These include a regal Italian Alder (Alnus cordata), planted to mark the visit of HM Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in June 1978, a Mountain Ash (Sorbus americana), planted by Princess Anne in 2021 and a trio of Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ trees commemorate the births of Princes George and Louis, and Princess Charlotte.

ounded in 1961, JAYF provides safe, supported hostel-style accommodation for young people aged 18–25 who are experiencing homelessness.

As the only charity in Jersey dedicated specifically to this age group, it plays a vital role as a safety net for those who have nowhere else to turn.

With demand for its services increasing, events such as this open garden are both a welcome opportunity to raise awareness and a reminder of the Wisteria sinensis in glorious spring bloom, cascading across the house. community’s ongoing need for support.

A particularly touching feature was a granite bench bearing the inscription: ‘To commemorate the Diamond Wedding Anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh and the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of Cambrai, 20 November 2007’.

Such details add layers of history and reflection to an already captivating setting.

The day itself could not have been more perfect. The Wisteria sinensis, cascading across the house, was in full bloom and looked magnificent in the spring sunshine. The event was very well attended, though mindful of data protection considerations particularly regarding children - photography was limited largely to the plants and trees, with only a couple of images of familiar parish faces.

Exploring further, I discovered a charming old wishing well, though without inscription, leaving its history something of a mystery. The wooded valley, rich with native and ornamental trees, is a haven for wildlife especially our red squirrels. The ponds are also home to trout, koi carp, ducks and moorhens, adding to the sense of tranquillity.

For those who missed this delightful occasion, the next JAYF garden opening will take place on 28 June, from 2–5pm, at Seafield House on La Route de St Aubin - a unique Regency Greek Revival villa built in 1809 by a prominent Jersey merchant involved in the cod trade between Newfoundland and Brazil. Household recycling collection 2026 This guide explains how to use the St. Saviour household recycling collection. A collection planner is included so you know when your recycling will be collected.

Every home in St. Saviour receives a recycling collection, in addition to the existing rubbish and glass collections. Recycling collections will be on the same day as your General Waste. All items to be placed in either Clear or Blue bag as per guidance, these are available from the Parish Hall.

St. Saviour couple exceed a century of service to local Scouting

Lifetime resident of St. Saviour, Christine Marett and her husband Mick, have collectively been warranted leaders in Jersey Scouting for onehundred and two years, but have no desire to give up yet.

A

lthough one can only become a warranted leader at the age of eighteen, the couple’s journey with uniformed youth groups started in the early 1960’s, with Christine a Brownie and then Guide, attaining her Queen’s Guide Award, and Mick, a Cub Scout and Scout, then junior leader, and thus their collective connection with Guide and Scout groups number over one hundred and twenty-six years.

Christine met Mick at the 2nd Jersey (Greve d’Azette) Scout and Guide Band where Mick was a 1969 founder member and a percussionist; playing Bass, Tri-Toms and Tenor drum, while Christine played bugle, E-Flat trumpet and standard trumpet. As well as Band Leader of the now named Jersey Scout Band, Mick has, from 1973, held positions as Scout leader, Cub and Assistant Cub Scout leader, Island Cub Scout Leader, and Chairman, and is currently 2nd Jersey Scouts’ Quartermaster and a Trustee Board Member of the St. Saviour based group.

Christine was an Assistant Cub Scout Leader from 1975, before becoming an ‘Akela’ (Head of the Cub Scout pack) in 1985, is Assistant Band Leader and head of the trumpet section and finds time as the Band Secretary.

Laying a myth to rest on Scouting being a once-a-week endeavour, Christine says:“It is not just once or twice a week, there is a lot of programme planning, periods away at local, national and international camps or other organised trips and activities, caretaking and dealing with the Scout Hall bookings and the general maintenance of the Rue des Prés Kenneth Faucon Memorial Hall, not to mention the administration and fielding parents’ enquiries throughout the years.”

The Band has performed at Liberation Days, Remembrance Sundays, St. Helier Pilgrimage, Jersey and Guernsey Battle of Flowers and Jersey Winter Battle, Re-enactments of the Battle of Jersey and numerous French festivals, with the highlights being two occasions when the Jersey Scout Band played at Disneyland Paris and once at Windsor Castle, with the Band’s Drum Corps.

In August 1983, Mick and Christine were young leaders who accompanied a group of Jersey scouts to undertake a building project at the National Scout campsite in Nairobi, Kenya, to celebrate seventy-five years of Jersey Scouting. The building was completed and ultimately used for the benefit of disabled Kenyan Scouts.

Both Mick and Christine have received many long-service and other awards through the National Scout Association but a highlight for the couple was their nomination and subsequent winning of the 2022 category of Inspirational Leaders in the Jersey Evening Post Pride of Jersey Awards.

Recently, things went full circle for Christine when she invested, as a new Beaver Leader, Mark Pallot, one of her former Cubs thirty-four years ago.

However, Scouting is not the only thing that occupies Christine’s time as she is heavily involved with running and working with three local dog clubs, as well as taking two of her Cesky Terriers weekly, into two schools under the Read2Dogs section of national organisation Pets as Therapy. As well as St. Clement, she also attends St. Saviour’s own Grand Vaux School with her two-year-old bitch Valerie.

As author of this piece, I should also declare that I am Christine’s sister. I am incredibly proud of her and Mick for their selfless dedication to numerous Jersey charities and the youth of the island

for over a century. Even I must book Christine’s time each week when we have a catch-up tea/coffee at a picturesque Jersey coastal location.

They never seem to slow down.

The International Volleyball Hall of Fame has unanimously voted to induct Denis Le Breuilly founder of the Jersey Volleyball Association - into its Class of 2026. Notified personally by the IVHF Executive Director before the global announcement, Le Breuilly becomes the first person from Great Britain ever to be honoured in the Hall’s Leader category.

T

his latest accolade follows a distinguished list of recognitions: induction into the Volleyball England Hall of Fame (2024), Honorary Life Membership of Volleyball England, and becoming the first recipient of Honorary Life Membership of World ParaVolley (2018), the global federation for athletes with physical impairments.

Le Breuilly’s journey into Sitting Volleyball began while officiating a Volleyball England Men’s Cup Final at Crystal Palace. Already an experienced referee and administrator, he qualified as an International Sports Organization for the Disabled referee in 1992. After a decade on the international circuit, he retired at the mandatory age of 55 — but not before an extraordinary final year, serving as 1st Referee for the Volleyball England Men’s National Final, the World Standing ParaVolley Cup Final in Slovakia, and the European Women’s Sitting Volleyball Cup Final in Hungary.

Sitting Volleyball stands apart in the Paralympic movement: a fast, fiercely competitive team sport requiring no technology, wheelchairs, or prostheses. Athletes compete seated on the court - skill, speed, and determination. Le Breuilly has long championed the discipline, calling its athletes “enabled, not disabled.”

After retiring from officiating, he took on a series of influential leadership roles within World ParaVolley: Secretary of the Referee Commission (2005–2010), Chair of the Awards Committee (2019–2023), Chairman of both the Rules and Constitution Committees, Interim General Manager (2006–2008), Senior Staff Tutor and Mentor for referees and technical officials, and member of the Technical Commission for Human Resources.

Former World ParaVolley President Barry Couzner OAM praised Le Breuilly’s pivotal impact, stating that his leadership “saved” Sitting Volleyball from being removed from the Paralympic Games. By ensuring compliance with WADA anti doping standards and International Paralympic Committee classification requirements, Le Breuilly secured the sport’s future on the world stage - where it continues to thrive.

In 2010, the International Paralympic Committee appointed him Technical Delegate for Sitting Volleyball at the London 2012 Paralympics, entrusting him with planning, delivery, and presentation of the entire competition. Following London’s success, he was again appointed for Rio 2016, where spectators voted Sitting Volleyball the most exciting and entertaining sport of the Games.

Among his proudest achievements is enabling a sub Saharan men’s team to qualify for London 2012 and a women’s team to compete at Rio 2016 - the only African women’s team to participate in any Paralympic sport at those Games. When he first became Sport Director, not a single African woman was classified to play internationally.

Le Breuilly emphasises that this honour reflects the support of countless colleagues, mentors, and friends across nearly 50 years in volleyball and 35 years in ParaVolley. Above all, he credits his wife Pauline and daughters Lisa and Clare for their unwavering love, sacrifice, and guidance.

The International Volleyball Hall of Fame Induction Weekend will take place on October 16–17, 2026, in Holyoke, Massachusetts - the birthplace of volleyball.

Season 2025/26 Continues bg Brendan Boyle

At the time of writing the 2025/26 season is coming to a conclusion with a small number of fixtures still to be played.

Under 16 Upton beating the Guernsey champions 4-1 and have the final of the Eric Amy Trophy to look forward to.

The under 15s are currently top of their league with a few games still to be played. They also reached the final of The Dave Melton Memorial Trophy but lost out on the day.

In the younger age groups there are no league trophies to be played for with the emphasis on development. There are a limited number of cup competitions and the under 13s winning the Richie Brocken Cup.

A

t the senior level the first team have finished a highly respectable third in the top division (Premiership 1) in addition to having a Jeremie Cup final in Guernsey to look forward to. There were also a number of other cup semi-final appearances over the course of the season.

For the reserves they concluded the season being crowned winners of the Championship 2 title going through the league season unbeaten.

In the under 18s division the team were crowned champions, winning all 10 of their league games.

They also went on to complete the league and cup double by winning The Tregear Junior Memorial Trophy. The team are looking to complete a clean sweep when they play in the finals of the Under 18s Upton and the EJ De Ste Croix Memorial Trophy.

The under 16s are also looking to complete a clean sweep in their age group. After also winning the league by winning every game they have won the St Saviour's Under 18s - Tregear Junior Memorial Trophy

In addition to the organised leagues for the senior and junior age groups the minis section continues to thrive. The annual Minis Festival to compete for the Micky Porter Trophy and the Pierre Le Saux Plate was held over the early May bank holiday weekend with 9 local clubs being represented. After two great days of football St Paul’s and St Lawrence came out winners.

In addition to club football the club has been well represented in successful under 21s, under 18s and under 16s Murattis.

A huge congratulation and thank you to all involved in another successful season with the hope of further trophies to be won before the end of the season. Once the 2025/26 season is concluded planning for the 2026/27 season will get underway.

The club would like to extend a huge thank you to all sponsors who provide crucial financial and other support the allow the club to offer football across all the age groups. These include Trinity Joinery, Ogier, Trident Trust Company, Ashbe Construction, Ocorian, Masters Scaffolding, Elevate and Access Scaffolding.

A Busy Summer for the

Pétanque Club

Summer is well underway, and it’s proving to be another lively season for our parish pétanque club. With all parishes once again taking part in the island league, there’s a full schedule ahead - 24 matches in total - keeping players on their toes throughout the season.

W

e’ve already played several fixtures and, at the time of writing, the club is sitting in a very respectable third place. A strong start and plenty still to play for.

This year, we’ve once again divided into two teams. While that can sometimes be a challenge - particularly with the usual interruptions of holidays and the occasional bout of illness - it also has real benefits. Most importantly, it allows more people to take part, ensuring that anyone who wants to play has the opportunity to get involved. That sense of inclusion remains at the heart of the club.

For those who might be interested in giving pétanque a try, new players are always very welcome. Regular sessions take place on Mondays and Thursdays, offering a relaxed and friendly environment whether you’re a complete beginner or have played before.

Of course, pétanque isn’t just about competition. The social side of the club is just as important, and no mention would be complete without highlighting one of its best-loved traditions cake! Players and spectators alike are well catered for, making each gathering as much a social occasion as a sporting one.

With a busy fixture list, a strong league position, and a warm welcome extended to newcomers, it looks set to be an enjoyable and successful summer for the club.

Parishioners can now take advantage of updated mobile library visits right here in our parish. The mobile library will be stopping at Maufant (in the Maufant Youth Centre car park) on Tuesdays from 15:45 to 16:30, and at Langtry Gardens on Wednesdays from 09:30 to 11:00.

hile the selection in the mobile library may not be as extensive as the main town library, it offers something equally valuable – convenience. Being able to borrow and return books locally saves a trip into town, along with the time and cost of parking.

You can also reserve books from the main town library or the Communicare branch and have them delivered to the mobile library for collection at your preferred stop, giving you access to a much wider range of titles.

St Saviour Bowls Club

The bowls club recently held a Special General Meeting to approve a raft of changes to the club’s constitution and rules. The introduction of “ASSOCIATE” members gives people the chance to join the club and to enjoy the social activities without necessarily playing bowls. As an associate member you can have some roll ups without making that commitment to playing regularly.

Education by Stimulation On a glorious springtime Saturday, the Jersey Trees for Life team – including a bumble bee, a ladybird, an owl and a squirrel – was in St Saviour’s Woodland for the first of its two annual children’s events, April Adventure.

A

long with its autumnal equivalent, this event has proved extremely popular in recent years as parents seek ways to encourage their youngsters to engage directly with nature – something that’s become imperative in an age of technological oversaturation and a rapidly warming planet.

If nature engagement was the aim, it was certainly fulfilled.

Around 140 children attended the two 90-minute sessions, each offering a host of nature-themed activities including sapling repotting, coaster art, a tree quiz and the obligatory scavenger hunt, complete with sweet incentives. All for a fiver too.

It was wonderful to see families playing together in the woodland. It was also safe to conclude that dads enjoy building dens as much as their kids do.

Although sometimes overlooked in the maelstrom of activity, education is a core part of the charity’s raison d’être. As today’s children will supersede us, it’s vital to ensure they’re engaged with nature, understanding the symbiotic relationship we share and its fundamental importance to our existence.

Jersey Trees for Life thanks everyone who contributed to the event’s success, from those who bought tickets to all the volunteers that made it happen. Thanks also go to the Parish of St Saviour for providing facilities and Honorary Police.

These events really are a fantastic way to bring community together.

Read to the Beat with Jersey Library’s Summer Reading Challenge This summer, Jersey Library is inviting children across the Island to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, with this year’s lively theme Read to the Beat.

T

he Summer Reading Challenge is a free, annual initiative that runs throughout the school holidays, encouraging primary school children to enjoy reading for pleasure over the break.

The 2026 theme celebrates the connection between stories, music and rhythm, adding a fun, creative twist to the challenge.

Children can sign up from Saturday 27th June at Jersey Library, Communicare Library or on the Mobile Library. Every kind of reading counts especially those inspired by music, sound and performance, including picture books, audiobooks, ebooks, graphic novels and music scores. Incentives are given along the way including a swim pass from Aquasplash and on completion of the 6th book, children are presented with a medal and a certificate.

John Ogilby's Aesop's Fables: An exhibition at Jersey Library Step into the world of Aesop’s Fables as they were imagined in the seventeenth century.

F

eaturing illustrations from books in Jersey Library’s special collections, the exhibition reveals how these familiar animal tales were used to explore moral and social questions during a time of political uncertainty and change.

Although Aesop’s Fables originated in Ancient Greece, their ongoing appeal for writers and artists lies in their adaptability. By using animals to reflect human behaviour,

the stories address timeless themes such as power, ambition, deception and wisdom. In seventeenth century England, this indirect approach to storytelling made the fable a particularly powerful art form.

At a time when speaking openly about politics and those in power could be risky, animals could safely act out moral dilemmas, allowing readers to interpret the message for themselves.

The exhibition also explores how illustrations shaped the interpretation of these stories.

Full-page illustrations set the fables in detailed landscapes, reflecting a new fascination with the natural world. Far from being merely decorative, these illustrations were intended to help guide readers' make the right moral choices.

The exhibition is on display in the Jersey Library Second Floor Gallery until the end of September.

The Concluding Histoires of Jacques during the Occupation Years written by Geoffrey Morris - as recounted to him by Jacques

As we arrive at the conclusion of the series of articles of the Occupation stories of Jacques related directly to me, and having to rely on pure memory to recount those incidents, this final chapter certainly has areas where conjecture as opposed to strict factual incidents will appear.

H

owever I will acknowledge in the narrative those areas where my recollections are vague. Jacques, as has already been mentioned, was very closely associated to Elsche, the German engineer who oversaw many if not all the construction projects in the island. At Gorey Common there was a granite crushing plant which employed slave labour within the confines of the heavy work involved in that exercise. However, on site was a metre gauge railway, (this could well have been part of the reinstated Jersey Eastern Railway track). It utilised a small diesel powered locomotive (I believe this is how Jacques described It to me) to haul the wagons full of pre-crushed and crushed rock. Jacques was the appointed driver of this locomotive for a period of time which he never disclosed to me during our various reminiscences, but he did recount that he spent many hours each day just sitting in the driving cab awaiting the filling or discharging of the loads. Forming a link to this theme of railways is another story which exemplifies the downtime of the paid labour force. Situated across from Parade Road was a large timber built shed which was utilised as a general store for non-military items.

This building eventually after hostilities had ceased, found its way to the junction of Route du Fort and St. Clements Road where it eventually became the TOC H building, and ended its final years as a children’s nursery before being confined to the dump to make way for re-development. Elsche would ask Jacques to sit in the building and count the number of railway track iron “dogs” as Jacques called

them. These were the large flat headed nails used to secure flat bottomed railway track to the wooden sleepers, and there were hundreds of them in a large pile. Elsche having given his instructions then ensconced himself into the adjacent pub for a couple of hours, after which, he returned to see how Jacques was getting on ,with the instruction that when he had finished the counting to re-count them back again into their original pile. Following this he would then return to the pub. Whether the exercise was then again repeated I never did ascertain. The final story in this insight into the singular, but historically importance recollections of the day to day activities during the occupation years is one which left me with a lasting memory of how destructive the occupying forces could be in their determination to follow instructions without any regard to the consequences of the property of the resident population.

We are well aware of the destruction by them of La Rocco Tower purely for the exercise of shooting experience. Halfway up Beaumont Hill on the left, was a farmhouse style property which lay in the path of a proposed secondary route from the coast to the top of the hill. To achieve this the building was wired with high explosives with the intention of flattening it. However as Jacques recounted, trial pits had been dug along the proposed route and following a heavy downpour the resultant flooding proved that the proposed destruction would not be able to reach conclusion. If it were not for the storm that building would have befallen the fate of so many of its counterparts. Thankfully it stands today as a reminder of what may have been well described in those dark days “what the unknown tomorrow may bring.”

Jacques remained in his property until such time as he needed to go into care, which involved him spending time at several residences of that nature, finally ending up at Oak Ward in St. Saviour, his home Parish, where he passed away in his mid-nineties many years ago.

A Fond Farewell

to Reverend Martin Evans & Andrea The last Sunday service performed by the Reverend Martin Evans was on 15 February and it was almost standing room only in the parish church. It was an emotional service with parishioners sad to say goodbye to Martin and Andrea but all wishing them well on their way to Windsor.

A contingent from the Church including church officers, long time congregation members, clergy friends and choir members travelled over to Windsor to attend an Evensong at St George’s Chapel which included the service for the installation of Reverend Martin Evans as Canon of the Kings Free Chapel of St George within his castle at Windsor.

I

t was a wet and wild evening when we arrived and were ushered to our front row seats. The service commenced with the entry of the Military Knights of Windsor who were resplendent in their uniforms. The choir processed and the real magic of the evening commenced. The voices of the choristers echoed beautifully in the magnificent surroundings. It was a real spinetingling occasion. Reverend Martin and the senior Canon arrived

Lent Lunches

This year’s trio of Lent lunches, held over February and March, proved a real highlight, bringing the parish together in warm and cheerful style while raising funds for the Church’s organ.

he second lunch was especially delightful, prepared and served by pupils from St Michael’s School.

Each gathering was well attended, with a tempting variety of homemade soups on offer, followed by cheese and biscuits.

More than just a meal, these occasions were lively social events - full of conversation, community spirit, and generosity - all in support of a much-needed and worthwhile cause.

Graffiti artwork Grands Vaux Youth Project is thankful for the very kind and supportive donation provided by Connect Me Jersey, who funded three arts and graffiti days during the half term.

Young people voted for the new colour scheme in the main building, they drew ideas and created their own sports hall rules wall design and sketched on a blank canvas before getting stuck in with the graffiti.

The graffiti project allowed young people to come together in their community, to express themselves through creativity and learn the art of graffiti including the safety requirements and the skill of spraying for the best results!

A wonderful day we had at the Church Fête on 16 May!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support us. The weather certainly smiled on our outdoor fun, while inside the church there was just as much to enjoy.

F

rom delicious afternoon teas (with the most wonderful scones kindly provided by Longueville Manor), to Faye’s tempting homemade jams and chutneys, there was something for everyone. The raffle table boasted some fabulous prizes, while Lucie’s Boulange offered us handcrafted cakes and breads. Sally-Anne’s beautifully knitted scarves and hats added a cosy touch, and our ‘Name the Teddy’, ‘Count the Sweets’ and ‘Find the Treasure’ games kept visitors of all ages thoroughly entertained.

There are so many people to thank – and apologies if we have missed anyone!

Women’s League CIO NEWS

The Catholic Women’s League started their 2026 fundraising with an Easter Hamper Raffle.

Again this proved very popular and we plan to purchase Book Tokens to donate to “Every Child Our Future”, which they will distribute, so that the children can purchase books of their own.

he charity supports school children with their reading skills by sending Volunteers into Primary Schools. They also hold out of school sessions at the Town Library.

A home-made Cake Sale was also held recently to raise much needed funds.

ersey Camerata, formed in 2023 after a community performance of Vaughan Williams’ Concerto Grosso, is mainly a string group but loves inviting guest musicians from oboes and horns to harpsichord and marimba. Under Emma Davies’ direction, they create top‑quality music in a friendly, supportive setting.

We are looking forward to welcoming Susie Richardson soon, CEO of Jersey Cares, to speak to us about her new role. At Christmas 120 Angels were donated with a Christmas message from the CWL to go in the shoe boxes they sent out.

At Georgetown Methodist Church, the coming months are filled with special occasions, including concerts, services and continued improvements to our property.

O

ur 25th anniversary celebratory concerts are already underway and proving hugely successful. The exceptionally high musical standard is a joy, and we are fortunate that many previous performers are delighted to return and share their talents once again. Whether choirs, vocalists or instrumentalists, the quality shines throughout. In this special year, we are also proud to feature several performers who are now established professional musicians.

Coming soon, we look forward to performances by the Da Capo Academy of Performing Arts, presenting highlights from Les Misérables, a visiting UK grammar school and the current PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year, vocalist Ruby Le Masurier. A notable milestone will be our 250th concert on 3 September, featuring two young professional performers - an impressive achievement.

The church will celebrate its 152nd anniversary on 14 June, when the morning service will be conducted for the final time by our Minister, the Rev Dawn Saunders. After five years of dedicated service, she will be leaving for a new appointment in West Yorkshire. Her Circuit farewell service at Georgetown will take place on 19 July, when we will bid her goodbye with heartfelt thanks and, no doubt, uplifting Methodist hymn singing. On Sunday 26 July, our morning service will be enriched by a visiting choir from Didcot, UK, performing Fauré’s Requiem.

Work will soon begin on the exterior of the church, with scaffolding erected along the west side to enable repainting and window refurbishment. The heritage colours on the front façade have been widely admired and will be continued. Meanwhile, a new noticeboard facing the main road is planned, providing an attractive and welcoming feature for all in the community.

On Monday 7 May, prime minister Winston Churchill announced on the BBC radio the unconditional surrender of all German forces and ended his announcement with

the words “…and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today.” This last was greeted with cheers and applause in the Royal Square since Bailiff Alexander Coutanche, tipped off about Churchill’s broadcast had arranged for loudspeakers to be set up around the square.

At the fringe of the cheering crowd stood several German soldiers, ignoring what, in any other circumstance, would have been a crowd that needed dispersing.

We all know that in fact it was almost two more days before the German forces formally surrendered but what if…

When the Royal Navy destroyers HMS Bulldog and Beagle arrived off Guernsey at 14.00 hrs (Double British Summer Time) on 8 May with a party under the joint command of Rear-Admiral G.C. Stuart DSO DSC and Brigadier A.E. Snow OBE and expecting an unconditional German surrender, Kapitänleutnant Armin Zimmermann, representing the Channel Islands commander-in-chief Vizeadmiral zur See Friedrich Hüffmeier (conveyed to the rendezvous by a battered and rusting minesweeper and who gave the Nazi salute when boarding Bulldog), advised that he was empowered only to discuss terms for an armistice that would commence at 00.01 hrs the following day, not sign any unconditional surrender. What’s more, the proximity of the two British warships was a ‘provocative act’ and they would be fired upon if they did not go away.

At 16.45 precisely, a 12 inch shell screamed over Bulldog and splashed into the sea 50 yards ahead of the destroyer.

Thirty seconds later a similar eruption took place 50 yards astern.

Zimmerman was detained for an hour while Admiral Stuart and Brigadier Snow contacted GOC Southern Command in Plymouth for instructions and after Zimmerman had disembarked, Bulldog’s captain, a grizzled commander who’d spent much of the war escorting trans-Atlantic convoys, exclaimed, ‘To hell with that. These beggars have surrendered…’ and with both the Admiral and Brigadier compliant, ordered his vessel and Beagle to heave to.

‘Guns!’ The Gunnery Officer was fastening his helmet.

‘Prepare to open fire…’ He leaned over the speaking tube to the wheelhouse below. “Ring Full ahead and start zigzagging. Flags, call Beagle and tell him to hop it…”

‘The mad beggars!’ the captain shouted. ‘Sound “Action Stations”. His First Lieutenant pressed the large red button, commenting drily, ‘They’re bracketing us…’ as similar eruptions took place ahead and astern of Beagle. ‘They’s got a four gun 12-inch battery inland and they’re radar guided…’ He recalled the notes he had browsed before sailing. The notes gave precise details of the ordinance in place on both islands compiled by RAF reconnaissance and that the Mirus 12-inch battery was manned by officers and men of the Kriegsmarine. ‘Any single shot can sink us…”

“Fire on what, sir?’ The First Lieutenant questioned. ‘The battery is inland. We have no idea where it is nor even what’s actually facing us on the coast since these are all protected by bunkers…” He pointed to the coast where bunkers and towers were evident. He didn’t add quite what the effect of their 4.7-inch guns would be and in the coastal area there would be civilians. Wryly he thought of Nelson’s instruction that ships should never take on land-based batteries.

They had remained hove to for almost half an hour when a Telegraphist appeared with a message from the GOC Southern Command advising that the new German Führer, Grossadmiral-zur-See Karl Doenitz had given the order to all the German forces to surrender and they were all complying, including the CinC of the German forces in the Channel Islands.

The Captain rang down to the wheelhouse. ‘Set a course to take us back to Guernsey.’ He turned to the officers on the bridge. ‘I’d like to see the madman who opened fire on us and sank Beagle brought aboard in bloody chains…’

‘Their guns have a range of more than 20 miles…” the First Lieutenant commented to the Gunnery Officer who was literally twitching his thumbs..

Once again the foregoing is a work of fiction although Bulldog and Beagle did retire out of range when so suggested by Kapitänleutnant Zimmerman. It did not happen but could it have done.

Another 12-inch shell exploded in the destroyer’s wake, shaking the entire vessel. Bulldog leaned into a sharp turn as the slim vessel zigzagged. Beagle was heading away from her consort, also zigzagging wildly, opening the gap between them. Suddenly Beagle’s bridge structure dissolved in a fiery blast, so violent that it rolled the ship onto her beam ends.

‘Good God, Beagle’s bought it!’ as another 12-inch shell landed on the stricken destroyer literally blowing the vessel apart. For a moment or two the bow and stern remained above the surface before sinking in a welter of smoke, oil fuel and loose deck fittings.

Despite the risk, the captain ordered Bulldog to circle the widening circle of fuel and wreckage. ‘She’s gone with everyone in her…” the Gunnery Officer muttered as Bulldog heeled into a tight turn. ‘Keep an eye out for survivors,’ the captain barked into the Tannoy. “And let’s hope those beggars don’t go for the double!’

But there were no survivors. Beagle, Bulldog’s sister B-Class destroyer and regular companion on convoys, had been destroyed by a single very accurate salvo.

‘Resume zigzagging. Let’s get out of here. Those beggars will pay for this.”

This is the story of the sport of shooting in Jersey.

Jersey’s shooting origins began with the need to defend the island and the creation of the Jersey Militia in 1337. The Militia were involved from bows to rifle shooting.

The book begins with the Militia Years from 1337 to 1860. In 1861 and civilian shooting begins. The ranges are covered, together with over ninty names of shooting clubs and associations. The Occupation stopped shooting in 1940.

The next section is devoted to clubs from all areas of shooting from 1945 up to 2026 covering their history, locations and ranges.

Jersey-made guns and gun makers together with some recent gun retailers and an outline of the Firearms Laws from 1879 to the present showing the low nunber of crimes and offences committed, together with some of the strictest firearms regulations anywhere in the world. The Island’s unique Captain Bryan 1877 honorary sytem of licensing when compared with the UK, is almost world beating in its effectiveness.

The work of the Jersey Care Commission is expanding. Chief Inspector Becky Sherrington answers key questions about what these changes mean for Islanders

EXPANSION OF REGULATED CARE SERVICES IN JERSEY What is changing in the regulation of care services in Jersey, and what does this expansion mean?

Following changes to the Regulation of Care (Jersey) Law 2014, our remit has expanded to include the regulation of hospital services, ambulance services and Government-provided mental health services. Certain laser clinics will also be inspected under the updated Law. This means these services will be subject to independent regulation against a Single Assessment Framework, a set of clearly defined standards that outline how care services should be provided. The changes reflect a commitment to ensuring Islander’s receive health and social care services that are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

What’s the purpose of independent regulation, and how does it help improve care?

Independent regulation helps provide Islanders with assurance about the quality, safety and effectiveness of health and social care services, while supporting continual improvement in care quality. We help achieve this by setting clear, evidence-based standards and assessing services fairly, proportionately and transparently through inspections and ongoing oversight.

What services are included in the expanded regulation, and what is not?

The expanded Regulation of Care (Jersey) Law 2014 includes the independent regulation of hospital services, ambulance services, Government provided mental health services and certain laser clinics.

Ambulance services provided by charitable organisations, including St John Ambulance Jersey and Normandy Rescue, also fall within the updated Law. Private mental health services are not included. Decisions about which services are regulated are made through the legislative process and voted on by the States Assembly. The Commission’s role is to apply the Law as enacted.

What happens next, and when will inspections begin?

Following the amendments to the Regulation of Care (Jersey) Law in November 2025, the Law was enacted on 6 April 2026. Newly regulated services now have until 6 October 2026 to register with us.

We’re preparing to carry out our first onsite inspection with a blend of local and external inspectors in 2027.

How will hospital services be inspected?

Hospital services won’t be inspected all at once. Because of the size and complexity of the hospital, inspections will be introduced in a phased, proportionate way, focusing on defined service areas or “blocks” over time, including medicine, surgery, outpatients, women and children’s services and mental health.

This approach will also help protect patient safety and minimise disruption to patients, staff and day-to-day clinical activity.

Who carries out inspections? Will specialist expertise be used?

Inspections are carried out by our experienced team of Regulation Officers, who have a wide range of professional experience from across health and social care, including frontline care, clinical, leadership and management roles. To inspect the hospital, ambulance and mental health services, specialist knowledge will also be required, so inspections will also be supported by external senior clinical advisers and subject matter experts, including specialists from other regulators such as the Care Quality Commission (CQC), professional bodies including the Royal College of Psychiatrists and other relevant organisations.

What happens during an inspection?

During an inspection, a range of evidence is gathered from different sources. The voice of service users and their families or carers is an important part of how we continually improve services, alongside the views of staff, leaders, on-site observations and the review of records and systems.

At the end of the inspection, initial feedback is shared with service leaders before an inspection report is produced setting out findings, including both good practice and areas for improvement. All inspection reports are published on the Jersey Care Commission website.

What happens after an inspection?

After each inspection, we publish an inspection report on our website. We don’t use ratings or judgement scores. Instead, reports provide clear, evidence-based findings that support transparency, accountability and continual improvement. The reports identify what is going well and areas of good practice as well as areas for improvement. Reports clearly set out, if required, the actions needed and timescales for improvement, with progress monitored through ongoing oversight.

Jersey Farmers Markets at Le Tacheron Farm, Trinity

Something Jersey’s been missing is here and it’s worth the trip to Trinity.

Jersey Farmers Markets runs every other Saturday at Le Tacheron Farm from 10am to 2pm through to the end of September, with the next market on Saturday, 11 July.

Browse fresh fruit and vegetables, locally caught seafood, cut flowers, honey, free-range eggs, meat, pastries, and freshly baked bread. Stay for the coffee and hot food made by a different chef from whatever’s seasonal and available on the day. There’s live music, farm animals to meet, loads of parking and no particular reason to rush home. Children will love it too. The farm’s rare breed animals, from pygmy goats and baby lambs to donkeys and working horses, have a way of stopping people in their tracks.
