P

arishioners, I think we can all agree that the wind and the rain in January and February have come as a surprise to all and, unfortunately, some have been badly affected by flooding. We are working with landowners and tenants, together with Infrastructure, Housing and Environment, to try to reduce the impact of what is now a fairly regular event, and we will let you know the next stages.

With better news, we should now look forward to the spring and summer knowing there is a lot more going on for the benefit of all.

First, a few people to thank for past events - Father Christmas made his second appearance at St Clement Community Hub for the kids before Christmas, and over 100 children received a present, hot dogs and juices provided by Karen and her amazing Committee who are taking the hub from strength to strength.

Meanwhile, Andium has a new initiative for the area and will involve the Hub in attempting to provide more planting and landscaping to make it look more like a village area.

The Tara Centre is still seeing people from the Parish with mental health difficulties and, due to their fantastic commitment, we awarded Esme an Unsung Hero Award. This service has really made a big difference to some people’s lives.

Also to make you aware, thanks to Liz Lambotte and volunteer helper Paul Pearce who have started up Pathways East at Samarès School every Friday at 6.30-8.30pm. This is based on the model of Pathways groups for young people which have been running successfully in the west of the island for ten years.

Meanwhile, Vicki from the Tara Centre has joined forces with me and Jersey Trees for Life to identify sites and funding to plant more trees and greenery around the Parish. We learned that St Clement has the lowest green density of all parishes, so we will be working on that over the coming months. Our thanks to Vicki for bringing this to our attention.

So, to sum up the next few months - BBQs, coffee mornings, coach trips, markets, French lessons, pétanque, trip to Cancale, Community Hub activities, and more trees! Plus, Parish in Bloom and Battle of Flowers, with more from them in next editions.

The Community Support Team is still going strong since the retirement of Julie Martin after 30 years of service to the Parish.

Congratulations to Lesley, the CST Committee and volunteers for picking up the mantle. We do need a few more drivers so, if you or a friend can offer some time to pick up, drop off, or take people to appointments or do their shopping, please contact the Parish Office.

On a more serious note, we are still paying out to deserving people from our varied trusts, and I am grateful to our Procureurs Sandra and Garry for their input in what are sometimes very difficult decisions.

Lastly, if you have any questions or problems, please get in touch with the Parish Office, or come along to the Constable and Deputies Meeting on the last Thursday of each month at 5.30-7pm at the Parish Hall. All topics are welcomed.

Our Twinning Committee has recently celebrated Valentine’s Day on 14th February with a party that was well attended with dinner, games and music. Thank you to Bernadette and the Committee for growing the organisation to what it is now. Next will be free French lessons starting in March, and another trip to Cancale in May with our hardy pétanque players who can also look forward to an extended pétanque pitch coming shortly.

On 20th December, the Parish staff got together for their annual Christmas Lunch, a tradition that we save up for all year so that we can celebrate together.

James grew up in the UK and, after having trained and worked as a doctor, he responded to a call to ordination in the Church of England and has served in various churches across the UK.

his year we went to The Mulcaster & 1823 Grill to celebrate the hard work and dedication of everyone who helps keep our Parish running smoothly throughout the year. It was a great setting for us all to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

J

ames is married to Katie, and together they have been involved in Christian leadership for the last twenty years, most recently at Town Church in Jersey for the last six years, where they have loved serving the church family, opening the church to the wider community, and working with other churches serving the town.

The lunch is more than just a meal; it is an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past year and reflect on our commitment to serving the community. Lots of laughter and conversation filled the room as we all enjoyed a delicious festive menu and shared stories from over the year.

As we move into the second quarter of the new year, we all remain grateful and thankful for the dedication of our team.

Here’s to another year of working together for the good of our community & Parishioners!

James and Katie have five daughters and one son, with the youngest three children living in Jersey. ‘Team Porter’ also come with a 9-year-old black labrador who loves the Jersey beaches.

James enjoys reading, running and spending time with his family, and supports Manchester United football club, the England rugby team and now the Jersey Bulls. He has a particular interest in leadership, and a heart for sharing Jesus with others.

Katie is a lay pioneer minister here in Jersey, with a passion for children, young people and families who don’t think church is for them.

James and Katie are excited about this next season in their lives – working with the church community of St Clement with St Nicholas in making Jesus known and working with the wider parish and community in seeking the flourishing of all who live here.

A fond farewell to Julie Martin On 9th January, we said goodbye to Julie, who left the Parish after 30 years of dedicated service. Her commitment, warmth, and tireless efforts have been a foundation of parish life, and she will be deeply missed by everyone.

o mark this occasion, we held a farewell gathering where friends, colleagues and the Community Support Team came together to share memories and express their gratitude. It was a lovely celebration of all that Julie has contributed over the years.

Thank you, Julie, for everything you’ve done for our parish community! Wishing you every happiness for the future.

The Parish Community Market was the idea of Geoff Pirouet, a past Procureur du Bien Public and Centenier who still mans, in his own inimitable manner, the bread and vegetable stall and who, in recent times has handed the overall organisation of the Market to Anna Staveley, who also runs the Market café.

December was a time of warmth, friendship and festive cheer as St Clement hosted its annual Senior Citizens’ Christmas Lunches at the Hotel Ambassadeur.

ver two days, Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th December, we welcomed guests from across the Parish for a celebration that truly captured the spirit of the season.

n November, the Hub hosted a fun-filled Halloween Party, where the children had a fantastic time and indulged in plenty of sweets. In December, they welcomed a very special visitor – Father Christmas! The children enjoyed a lovely chat with him, received a small gift and tucked into delicious hot dogs.

It was a magical afternoon full of festive cheer.

The lunches are more than just a meal - they’re an opportunity to bring together those who may be lonely, isolated, or struggling financially, ensuring everyone feels part of our community.

This year, we introduced updated criteria to make sure support reached those who needed it most, and the response was heartwarming.

Guests enjoyed a delicious traditional Christmas lunch prepared by the Hotel Ambassadeur team, seasonal music and carols that added to the festive atmosphere, and plenty of laughter, conversation and the joy of reconnecting with friends old and new.

Groundbreaking Gold

for St Clement Parish in Bloom The St Clement Parish in Bloom team won a Gold award in the 2025 RHS Britain in Bloom competition, held in Brighton on 31st October. This is the first time the Parish has won a top-tier award at national level.

T

eam Leader, Alli Singleton, said, “It is an incredible achievement for our small team of dedicated volunteers to be recognised in this way.

The RHS Judges visited us in August to consider our entry in the Small Coastal Town category. This wasn’t an ideal time for us, with ongoing drought conditions and improvements to the coast road and Parish Hall. It was a very stressful time, and to be awarded Gold is remarkable.”

The Judges were introduced to the ‘best of’ of St Clement, with a visit to St Clement’s Meadow, Le Hocq Common, and various presentations in the Parish Hall. They were also chauffeured around the parish in the Honorary Police car, and visited Chambard Allotments, the Parish Church and Samarès Manor.

The Parish in Bloom team spends months preparing for the competition, creating a portfolio which focuses on the horticultural, environmental and community engagement across St Clement. The portfolio showcases all the incredible activities happening in Jersey’s smallest parish.

Many congratulations to all those involved!

As Electoral Administrator for the Parish of St Clement, my role is to ensure that elections are delivered in a way that is accessible, secure and well organised. Under Jersey’s elections legislation, the Parish Secretary acts as the Electoral Administrator unless another officer is appointed.

Working alongside the Autorisé - the independent officer appointed by the Royal Court to supervise the poll and count - I am responsible for ensuring that suitable arrangements are in place so that every eligible elector can exercise their democratic right to vote.

he next General Election will take place on Sunday 7th June 2026. On that day, voters in St Clement will elect their Connétable, Deputies and, for the first time since 2018, Senators. By 2026, automatic voter registration should be in effect (we hope and wait), meaning that more residents than ever before will be included on the electoral roll. As participation increases, careful planning and clear communication become even more important.

2026 EVENT DATES Saturdays 9.30am to 1pm

As usual, for the 2026 General Election, St Clement will operate a single polling station at the Parish Hall which offers step-free access, accessible toilet facilities and designated disabled parking. Clear signage will be in place throughout the site, and measures will be taken to support voters with additional needs.

Parking will be available and the number 1 bus stops outside.

The polling station will be open from 8am to 8pm, however, if you are unable to attend on the day, there will also be the option to cast your vote by pre-poll at St Paul’s Gate or by post. The times that both alternatives will be available will be published closer to the event.

St Clement Community Support Team (CST) and the

Grace Trust

Since 2007, the CST has been quietly but faithfully supporting one of Jersey’s most compassionate charities - the Grace Trust - through its grocery distribution programme, which is one of many projects that are run by Grace Trust.

CST’s Involvement

G

race Trust Jersey is a registered charity founded in 1999 on Christian principles. Its mission is simple - to put a smile on the faces of those in our community who may feel excluded.

The Trust works with and for those in need in Jersey, such as people experiencing loneliness, addiction, separation, or low self-esteem, or who find it difficult to keep up in today’s hectic world.

When the late Len Norman founded the CST, his vision was to help those in need within the Parish of St Clement. He recognised that the team could also assist the Grace Trust with its Island-wide grocery deliveries, and many of our volunteers were keen to get involved.

Today, our wonderful coordinator Julie Martin compiles a list of around 30 Parishioners each month who would benefit from grocery support. Vini Jones, General Manager of the Grace Trust, identifies others in need across the Island. The groceries are purchased from and delivered by Waitrose to Samares Chapel.

An important part of the Trust’s work is its Grocery Distribution Programme. On the fourth Saturday of each month, volunteers deliver three bags of groceries, toiletries and other essentials to around over 60 households across the Island. These items are currently purchased partly by the Grace Trust and two wonderful private benefactors, who have been amazing and have kindly supported this project for the last three years.

On Friday afternoons, CST volunteers gather to re-pack the groceries into “bags for life,” ready for delivery on Saturday morning.

Each month, around 195 bags are prepared and then delivered on the following Saturday morning between with our CST volunteer drivers focusing on homes within St Clement.

I have had the privilege of helping to organise this work on behalf of the Parish for about 15 years, and it continues to be a deeply rewarding experience. It is a joy to work alongside such caring volunteers and the dedicated Grace Trust team. This programme provides a vital supplement to those who are struggling and is always met with heartfelt gratitude. Through the CST and the Grace Trust, we can offer practical help and show that our community cares.

Serving Our Community The past couple of months have been exciting for the Honorary Police team.

W

What Does an Honorary Police Officer Do? Our officers are volunteers who play a vital role in keeping the Parish safe and supporting community life. Responsibilities include traffic control, road checks, speed monitoring, community support and event assistance. Training and guidance are provided, and officers work as part of a supportive team committed to making a difference.

e’ve welcomed five new recruits, strengthening our ability to serve and protect the Parish. Their enthusiasm and commitment are a fantastic addition to our ranks.

The Honorary Police are an essential part of Parish life. Our work helps maintain law and order, supports community events, and ensures everyone feels safe. Though voluntary, the impact is significant and every officer contributes to the wellbeing of our Parish.

Farewell Buddy We are sad to let you know that Buddy passed away 8th Jan 2026 at the age of 11 years and 10 months.

uddy loved St Clement and his favourite beaches were Le Hocq and Green Island. Buddy wrote in L’Amarrage under the guidance of Alan Le Breton and enjoyed seeing himself in the magazine each quarter!

Building Confidence, Leadership, and Community

ur team of young leaders has made an incredible start, setting up games that encourage teamwork, cooperation, and communication. Their enthusiasm, energy, and commitment have been truly inspiring to watch.

Pathways East meets during term time at Samarès School, giving young people a safe and welcoming space to grow in confidence and develop leadership skills. Our aim is to empower children and young people from Year 5 and above, helping them build self-awareness, take on responsibility, and learn how to support and lead others.

Games play a central role in our sessions. They are not only a great way for us to get to know the young people, but also a powerful tool for learning about ourselves. Through play, we discover how we react in different situations - how we handle winning and losing, how competitive we are, and whether we show good sportsmanship. These experiences encourage reflection, learning, and personal growth.

This term, our focus is on teamwork. That means listening to each other’s ideas, learning when to lead and when to follow, and understanding that both roles are equally important. We can’t all be in the front seat - and that’s okay.

Our leadership sessions give young people real autonomy among their peers, helping them grow in confidence, self-awareness, and belief in themselves. Once young people transition to secondary school, they also have the opportunity to become leaders at one of our holiday clubs, held at St Luke’s School and Mont Nicolle School, where they can put their skills into practice.

Samarès School At Samarès School, Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in our commitment to developing happy, healthy and confident children. Our vision is for every child to experience high-quality physical education, school sport and physical activity that inspires a lifelong love of being active.

W

e believe that every child should have the opportunity to succeed and enjoy movement, regardless of ability or experience. Through carefully planned lessons, pupils develop physical literacy and fundamental movement skills such as balance, coordination and control. These skills are nurtured from an early age and provide foundations for participation in sport, exercise and healthy living throughout life.

Our PE curriculum is broad, balanced and inclusive. The lessons are planned by a specialist full time PE teacher. Children take part in a wide range of activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor learning. Children also have the opportunity to participate in after school sports clubs, including football, tag rugby, boxing and cross country running.

We currently have over 100 children across the school accessing before and after school sports clubs. Our aim is for these experiences to enable pupils to discover new interests, express themselves creatively and challenge their own limits in a supportive environment. Just as importantly, children learn about the value of an active lifestyle and the positive impact it has on both physical and mental health.

We are proud to also have achieved afPE Quality Mark for Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity in July 2025 which highlights our commitment to the importance of physical activity to support well-being.

As we reflect on the role of Physical Education at Samarès, we celebrate the way it supports the whole child. By nurturing a love of movement, promoting positive values and encouraging lifelong participation, we aim to equip our children with skills, habits and attitudes that will serve them well throughout their lives.

At Samarès, we celebrate sport by electing sports leaders in the school. Year 6 children can apply for the role to support OPAL (outdoor play and learning), where we have been awarded our Platinum Award, sports clubs and younger year groups PE lessons.

The sports leaders report that they like to be role models for the younger children and encourage them to join the clubs such as the Friday morning mile, which all children from every year group can attend before school. Sports leaders also believe that, since having a full time PE teacher, more children enjoy sports, play sports and there are a lot more opportunities than before.

Celebrating achievements and building an exciting year ahead It’s been a fantastic start to the year at our Youth Project, filled with celebration, creativity and plenty of forward planning. Our young people have thrown themselves into every opportunity, and their energy has shaped a brilliant beginning to the months ahead.

A night to remember - The Yoscars The highlight of our recent activities has undoubtedly been our very own “Yoscars” celebration event. This special evening gave us the chance to shine a spotlight on the achievements of our young people and recognise the positive contributions they make to our project and community.

Awards were presented to those who completed impressive charity fundraising, to our dedicated young workers who help support the running of sessions, and to those who have shown outstanding participation, kindness, and teamwork throughout the project. The pride in the room was unmistakable, and it was wonderful to see everyone cheering on the nominees.

Creativity and life skills in action Alongside the celebrations, our regular sessions have been buzzing with hands‑on activities. Young people have been enjoying cooking and baking, experimenting with new recipes and building confidence in the kitchen. Our art and crafts have also been a huge hit, offering a space for imagination, relaxation, and self‑expression.

Planning for a big year The start of the year has also been a valuable time for young person-led planning. Together, they have been shaping the big events for the year and mapping out the activities for the term ahead. Hearing the ideas and priorities of our young people ensures that the programme truly reflects their interests and gives them ownership of the project’s direction.

Transforming our outdoor space One of our most exciting ongoing projects is the development of our outdoor area. We’re working closely with the young people to design a space that is fun, welcoming and engaging - not just for our project, but for the wider community too. Their ideas are already inspiring a vision for a vibrant, shared environment that everyone can enjoy.

New Karate Club opens in St Clement Integrity Kenpo Karate brings modern self-defence art to the Parish A new martial arts club has launched in the Parish, offering residents the opportunity to learn Kenpo Karate, a dynamic and practical self-defence system suitable for all ages and abilities.

I

ntegrity Kenpo Karate aims to make this distinctive martial art accessible to the local community, with classes now running at two convenient Parish locations. Kenpo Karate is characterised by its fast, explosive hand movements and comprehensive selfdefence techniques that combine multiple hand and foot strikes.

Unlike traditional karate's emphasis on single decisive strikes, Kenpo's multiple-strike approach provides practitioners with greater flexibility and multiple options when responding to self-defence situations.

"Jersey has always had a strong following in Kenpo, and Integrity Kenpo will work collaboratively with other clubs in Jersey to promote and expand the art," said the club’s chief instructor, Nigel Romeril, an 8th Degree Black Belt and Associate Master of the Arts.

"The beauty of the Kenpo system is that it adapts to the individual, rather than requiring the individual to adapt to the art, making it accessible to people of all abilities and fitness levels."

With Chinese origins but modernised for contemporary environments, Kenpo blends circular and linear movements, creating a system that continues to evolve rather than relying solely on historical methods. The art combines elements of karate, boxing and jujitsu, offering excellent cardiovascular exercise whilst improving muscle strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.

The club particularly aims to serve residents in the east of the island, providing a structured self-defence programme for both adults and children. Beyond physical training, Integrity Kenpo Karate has international affiliations with the European Kenpo Karate Association (EKKA) and The Advanced Kenpo Training System (AKTS) and encourages members to build friendships and participate in social events across Jersey and at Kenpo gatherings throughout Europe.

Update

Twinning Quiz Our winter fundraising efforts continued with a Quiz evening led by our faithful, though challenging, Quizmaster Matt. This included the usual anagrams and some challenging questions, plus Collette’s superb raffle, and the evening was enjoyed by all who attended.

Games Night In late November, we held a Games Evening with a French theme. The activities involved identifying French characters and personalities, working out a mysterious message, matching colours, a little bingo, a short Christmas quiz and putting together of pictures of French TV personalities and famous people. The final activity involved the construction of the Arc de Triomphe using just one pack of playing cards and some card. There was also a sumptuous offering of cheese, charcuterie and baguettes, and a wonderful raffle.

Participants were invited to bring along signs wishing everyone a Happy Christmas in French. The under 12 years section was won by sisters Florence and Elizabeth, and the adult section by Committee member Jeannine Horton.

Carnival in Cancale This will take place in Cancale on the Sunday 24th May. The theme is ‘Terre et Mer’ (Land and Sea). If anyone is interested in joining us for this fun-filled weekend which may also include a friendly pétanque match on Saturday 23rd May, please let me know so that we can organise hotel accommodation for the weekend as the carnival is very well attended and Cancale will be very busy. We are also looking for Jersey bonnets as we will have the ladies dressed as jersey maids (terre) and the men as traditional jersey fishermen (mer). It would also be helpful for us to have a fishing net and perhaps a lobster pot if someone has one we could please borrow for the weekend!

Twinning stall at St Clement’s Christmas Fayre As a twinning group, we were invited to have a stall at the St Clement’s Sports Club Christmas Fayre on Saturday 29th November.

We put up a display of our forthcoming events in 2026 and set up our stall. Fortunately, we were able to obtain a range of products from France, including French biscuits. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and an opportunity for us to promote our twinning efforts, especially our social for ‘Le Saint Valentin’ in February.

French course for Parishioners By the time you read this, we will hopefully have just started our French course for Parishioners, provided there is enough interest.

We will feed back on this in the next edition.

S’il a décidé de ne pas être candidat à l’élection municipale de 2026, le maire de Cancale garde le souvenir bien vivant des liens qui ont été tissés avec St Clement, et de ceux qu’il a noué personnellement avec Len Norman puis Marcus Troy. Si tout avait commencé lors d’une rencontre à Cancale, des visites à St Clement, des participations au carnaval, des compétitions de pétanque… ont permis de partager de très bons moments entre des habitants des deux villes que seules les années Covid et le Brexit ont perturbé! Mais, parce qu’à chaque nuit succède le jour, le jumelage entre nos deux villes va continuer.

Pierre Yves has been Maire of Cancale for 18 years and will retire next month from the role as he can no longer be considered as a candidate, having served the longest term possible. He says that the memories of the links with St Clement and, particularly for him with Len Norman and Marcus Troy, will always remain; links which have been established through participation in the carnivals, visits to St Clement and pétanque matches, only interrupted by the Covid years and Brexit. He believes the twinning will continue into the future as night follows day.

groups. Even though it was quite a formal ceremony, there were many light touches as we welcomed James, Katie, their six children and Hetty the Black Labrador to “God’s own parish” and to our wider community.

Rev Tracy Bromley and I wondered how the parish was going to be able to properly celebrate Christmas without the energy and enthusiasm of David Shaw, who retired as Rector at the end of May. Fortunately, many volunteers came forward to help.

We do not know the last time there was a dog in the Rectory. Can any Parishioner with a long memory tell us?

W

e began with a wonderfully atmospheric candlelit carol service on Sunday 14th December followed by a Christingle service on Sunday 21st December for those families who were going to be away over Christmas. We billed it as a service for parents with noisy children, but it seemed as if there were just as many children with noisy parents! In any event, it set us up for all the services on Christmas Eve, including Carols and Christingles at St Nicholas, and a more reflective Midnight Communion.

We thought about all the different forms of lighting there had been in church over the centuries, including candles made of tallow, beeswax, whale oil, stearin and paraffin, before we converted to electricity in 1930. We blew out all our candles at the end of each service, but not the light of Christ, the reason for the season. This light continues to shine in an increasingly dark world. We each have a choice between darkness and the light in our lives and my prayer on what was my first and last Christmas Eve as “Temporary Rector” was that we will all make the right choice and shine as lights in the world in 2026.

We had a further opportunity to fill the church with light for the Institution and Induction of James Porter as our new Rector on Thursday 22nd January. The Connétable and Rector of each parish work closely together on both civic and ecclesiastical matters to create and maintain the sense of community for which St Clement is known.

I am writing this only 6 days after starting as the new Rector of the Parish of St Clement. It is a delight to begin this new season of our lives in this community, and we look forward to getting to know the people and the place of this parish over the coming weeks, months and years. We are committed to serving the whole parish with the love of Jesus, as we seek to contribute to the flourishing of all who live here.

Catholic Community NEWS Catholic Easter Message Women’s League from Catholic Dean of Jersey

The Catholic Women’s League continued their charity fundraising recently with our popular Bingo in the autumn at a new venue, St Thomas’ Church Hall.

We raised £756 in aid of Stroke Support Jersey.

I

n November, we held our Christmas Hamper Raffle, also in aid of Stroke Support Jersey, which raised a further £813, bringing the total to £1,569.

As Easter begins, I am reminded of what that inspiring holy man Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote to a friend from his prison cell in July 1944:

“The Christian hope of resurrection is distinguished from mythological ideas by the fact that human beings are directed to their authentic life on earth. They have no final flight into eternity from the responsibilities and difficulties of this world, but must, like Christ, savour and fulfil this earthly life. Only in this way are they crucified and risen with Christ the Risen Lord who meets us in the midst of life, not only at its edges.”

In the midst of what we are living through, with all its ups and downs, let us keep trying to welcome Christ. What might he be directing us to? Surely, it is to the efforts we should be making each day to practise a solidarity and a hope capable of giving strength and support to those around us. In such endeavours, we can, I believe, discover what our true life on earth is all about. May the Risen Lord bless us all as again we strive to be his Easter people.

Holy Week Liturgies

In December, the Christmas tree angels were on sale at St Thomas’ Church in aid of Jersey Cares, a charity which advocates and supports children and young people in care in Jersey and England. We also donated 120 angels to the charity for inclusion in their Christmas boxes, with a Christmas message from the Catholic Women’s League. The amount raised for these to date was £131.20.

We are already planning our fundraising for them and other charities in 2026.

L’Office du Jèrriais is working hard around the Island to revitalise our native language. Learner numbers of all ages are increasing, and there is a quiet realisation that Jèrriais is something which makes our Island truly distinctive.

The Jèrriais Section of the Jersey Eisteddfod took place at the end of January at St Ouen Parish Hall. Over 150 young people from primary and secondary schools across the Island took part in the junior event, performing poems, songs and sketches in Jersey’s native language on the stage in front of an audience of fellow participants, family members, teachers and supporters, plus the adjudicator, Professor Mari Jones from Cambridge University, and her assistant, Colin Ireson.

One of the world’s leading polyglots, Richard Simcott, flew all the way from Madeonia to recite a poem in Jèrriais as part of the adult event. Poly is Greek for “many” and glot means “tongue” – and Richard is internationally recognised for studying over 50 languages to a high degree of proficiency. He began learning Jèrriais about 18 months ago with an online beginners’ course taught by Aline Cattermole from Jersey Heritage, and has since become an advocate for our native language.

During his visit to Jersey, Richard commented, “Sometimes in life, you can feel as if you’re flying around like a paper bag in the wind, but language can give you an anchor. And with Jersey surrounded by sea, it’s good to have a strong anchor so you don’t fly off in the storms!”

He went on to say in a recent blog on his website speakingfluently. com, “For me, learning Jèrriais does a few useful things: it gives you another lens on Jersey’s history and identity, it makes place names and local expressions feel less opaque, […] and it also pushes you to slow down and listen, and that matters.”

It is understood that Admiral Friedrich Hüffmeier, commander-in-chief of the German forces in the Channel Islands, in April 1945 and despite Germany’s defeat being inevitable, stated to Jersey’s Bailiff Alexander Coutanche that ‘you and I will be eating grass before I surrender’. Even if that’s a myth, it makes a good title.

at Noirmont Point, the airport and St Helier’s harbour installations, areas believed to be largely free of civilians

By the autumn of 1944 the Channel Islands are starving but on 27 September, Winston Churchill writes: ‘I am totally opposed to our sending any rations to the Channel Islands for the civil population thus enabling the German garrison to prolong their resistance.’

Several shells miss their targets and cause major damage in the town behind the harbour and in the countryside around the airport. A few civilians, although less than a dozen, caught in the open while hurrying to shelter, are killed but no member of the garrison suffers any injury.

Then, not for the first time, the prime minister has a change of heart. “If they’re starving,” he barks. “We must invade. I recall Mountbatten had a plan, Operation Condor. Get it dusted off!”

Despite immediate objections from the Chiefs of Staff that the Channel Islands are irrelevant to the thrust towards the heart of the German Reich, Churchill points out that the alternative is to send food to the Islands. “Any such sustenance will be seized upon by the Boche. A show of real force should be sufficient.”

Churchill is insistent and Mountbatten’s plans from 1943 are revisited.

In the Royal Court House in St Helier, a stunned Bailiff Coutanche, who has just arrived behind his desk because of the curfew, telephones the Platzkommandantur but receives no response.

He hurries down to the Royal Square where he is joined by Charles Duret Aubin, the AttorneyGeneral, still wearing a pyjama jacket under his overcoat.

Churchill himself proposes a task force comprising the battlecruiser HMS Renown and the Jutland veterans HMSs Royal Sovereign and Resolution, all currently in home waters, supported by a screen of antisubmarine destroyers.

“These islands are truly impregnable fortresses,” Churchill is warned.

The bombardment is halted at 0800 CET.

Duret Aubin is aghast. “Surely we are not under attack, Mr Bailiff?”

He retorts, “Manned by a garrison that is hungry. They may be materially strong but spiritually they are weak. It can be done! It will be done!”

“Inevitably there will be civilian casualties,” Churchill is warned again.

“Surely they will be few, particularly if the attack takes place before dawn on a Sunday. This can be done! See to it!”

Thus plans are laid. The show of force will take place at dawn on Sunday, 8 October.

At 0630 Central European Time on Sunday, 8 October, the approach of three heavy units with escorts moving at high speed towards Jersey is reported by the Würzburg radar situated at Guernsey’s Fort George .

“It seems, Charles, that we are…”

“Where are the Germans?”

“They must have gone to ground. Like the rats they are…”

In the aftermath of the brief bombardment, the breaking silence is eerie.

At that moment a signal is being received at the Kriegsmarine wireless station at St Jacques in Guernsey from the GOC Southern Command advising Generalmajor Graf von Schmettow that the subjugation of the Channel Islands has commenced with a bombardment of military targets on Jersey. Further bombardments will follow unless the garrisons indicate their immediate intention to surrender. The signal concludes that the

“The man’s a fantasist!” Winston Churchill is still in his silk pyjamas although a cigar is already clamped between his teeth.

Brendan Bracken gently disagrees. “Not necessarily, Prime Minister. I suspect he recognises that having some 65,000 British civilians at his mercy gives him significant bargaining power…”

“Not with me, it doesn’t!” The PM turns to his naval adviser.

Admiral Cunningham scratches his jaw. “In theory, yes. But in practice, no.”

Churchill paces the Cabinet Room pausing to stare out at Downing Street.

“They will claim that we are letting them be killed, Herr Generalmajor.” The dry comment is made by von Schmettow’s chief-of-staff, Vizeadmiral Friedrich Hüffmeier.

Eventually he speaks. “Gentlemen, I have decided. Notify the Germans that we agree that the International Red Cross feed the civilian population.” A blast of cigar smoke. “Give the order to the Navy to withdraw. Tell the admiral ‘well done’.”

Von Schmettow raises an eyebrow. “Are you suggesting we comply, Friedrich?”

The foregoing is a work of fiction. It did not happen but it might have done.

Hüffmeier flushes. “Certainly not! Our ultimate victory is certain, Herr Generalmajor. We must not weaken now.”

“Then what do you suggest, Friedrich?”

“We fight back, Herr Generalmajor.”

“The Tommies are out of range of our guns, Friedrich, even Batterie Mirus… We are facing an enemy we cannot fight…” Yet to surrender would be regarded by Berlin as treason, with untold consequences for the families of the men who had committed it.

“Herr Generalmajor, I suggest we sit out any assault. The defences are quite capable of withstanding this type of bombardment. If the Tommies attempt a landing, then we will annihilate them on the beaches…”

“What about the Islanders?”

“Their fate is in the hands of their countrymen. It is my suggestion that we remind the British of that.” He looks at his watch. “Before their deadline…”

Von Schmettow confers with his senior officers. In the tobacco smoke-filled headquarters there is no talk of surrender but concern at the number of civilian casualties.

“It is war,” Vizeadmiral Hüffmeier retorts.

“Quite so,” agrees von Schmettow. “Nevertheless I propose that we seek an armistice…”

Vizeadmiral Hüffmeier is outraged. “An armistice! This is treason!”

“Friedrich, Friedrich…” von Schmettow soothes. “Hear me out.

What I propose is an armistice, for 48 hours, to allow the Britsih to discuss with us the evacuation of the civilian population…”

“The Führer will never agree. The civilian populations are an important bargaining counter…”

“Indeed, Friedrich. But we cannot be held to blame for the consequences if our offer is refused…”

Measure of Champions Champion trees are exceptional examples of their species. More specifically, a champion tree is typically classified as such by its size, relative to other specimens of the same species in the same geographical area – whether global, national, regional or local. Age, rarity and historical or cultural importance are further factors that can lead to a tree gaining champion status.

Although by no means universal, many countries have systems and processes to identify and register their champion trees. In our region, Tree Register of the British Isles (TROBI) is responsible for granting this status. Around 80,000 British and Irish trees are currently listed, of 275,000+ on its database.

The largest of the four Chinese swamp cypresses at Val de la Mare Arboretum, the only known genetically diverse specimens of their type in the northern hemisphere.

TROBI is a registered charity run by volunteers. Despite the practical limitations this brings, they visited Jersey in 2003 and again in 2013 to undertake assessments, updating the database to include around 500 local specimens in total. While some are sure to have since been lost to Storm Ciáran, many more will be unidentified.

Appreciating the incredible work TROBI does, Jersey Trees for Life is contributing by providing information about our island’s finest arboreal examples. Its volunteers have started assessing potential candidates for champion status and, from spring, when trees are easier to identify and far more photogenic, the mission will begin in earnest. Potential champions include a bearded alder at the Alder Collection (Alnus glutinosa subsp. barbata), a handkerchief tree (Davidia involucrata) at Rozel Valley and a magnificent Chinese swamp cypress (Glyptostrobus pensilis) at Val de la Mare.

hese specimens are crucial to the wellbeing and preservation of their local ecosystems. For context, a normal healthy mature tree supports hundreds of wildlife species while sequestering something like 20-40kg of carbon annually (a very approximate figure before considering size, species, methodology etc). Therefore, you can ramp up these numbers for a healthy champion.

Champion trees also provide important information about genetics and resilience traits such as drought tolerance, disease resistance and structural stability. All of these are considerations when cultivating, which, unsurprisingly, is another of their uses.

The charity is also contributing to an upcoming JEP series profiling prominent local trees.

We can’t talk about champion trees without a nod to their cultural and historical importance. They’re a symbol of cultural heritage, often acting as landmarks and providing identity to an area, as well as being a source of interest, engagement and education to the local community and visitors from further afield.

Standardised measurement methods differ by country. In the British Isles we measure the tree’s girth (circumference) at a height of 1.5m above ground level on the upper side of any slope. Height is measured formally using a hypsometer or clinometer, although more traditional (i.e. non-technological) techniques can be used to approximate.

St Clement play in the Inter-Parish League which is organised by the Jersey Croquet Club and played on their lawns at Les Quennevais.

Battle of Flowers may still be many months away, but St Clement Battle of Flowers Association have been working hard to ensure we are ready for the next parade.

I

n 2024, our Parish team won the Inter Parish League for the first time, and they successfully retained the title in 2025 in a very competitive season. The league ended with St Clement and St Helier equal on points and with the same number of games won, lost or drawn. The deciding factor was the result of the match played between the two Mike and Debbie Robinson parishes - St Clement won that match and were thus crowned champions once again.

The winning team comprised of Debbie Robinson (captain), Paul Duckworth, Mike Robinson and Sam Duckworth.

A

fter a successful town parade in 2025, the hopes are that Battle will return to Victoria Avenue this August. The Parish team will be exhibiting two entries: a paper flower junior float and a 35-foot senior float. We are grateful for the support we received and the positive feedback on last year's event, and now we need to join forces to ensure the exhibits are of our usual high standard.

Work is underway at both The Glen and Meadow Bank. The senior chassis has been rebuilt over the winter by our builders Paul Whiteside and Peter Le Breton to meet the new smaller length restrictions.

A big part of our work still focuses on fundraising. Thank you to everyone who supported our fairs, bingo nights and raffles. We kickstarted 2026 with a fantastic Spring Fair on Sunday 8th March.

Many thanks to our amazing stallholders and those who came to support. We will also be drawing our Easter Raffle on Sunday 29th March. Tickets are £1 each and there is the chance to win four amazing Easter hampers, crammed full of treats. Tickets are available from the Parish Hall. Our Miss St Clement competition and afternoon tea will also be returning on Sunday 24th May.

The Croquet Club has regular roll-ups on Tuesday and Friday afternoons from April until October and plays a version of the game called Golf Croquet. It is a very sociable and fun way to enjoy the game, especially on a lovely sunny afternoon. The club also holds regular social events in the clubroom at Les Quennevais.

Anybody is welcome to come along and have a go, and there is no charge for your introductory session!

The afternoons and evenings are available to members who can access the club using the various passcodes.

The club is once again making Tuesday and Friday evenings their New Faces sessions. There’s no strict time set for people to arrive with someone there from 5pm until late on both of these days.

As the days lengthen and temperatures get warmer, the hardy outdoor winter bowlers at St Saviour’s Bowls Club look forward to welcoming their teammates who’ve played indoors or off island in warmer climes.

The first Open Days of the summer will be taking place on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April when the club will be open all day from 10am.

We are hoping to run a mini league on Tuesdays in May where anyone new to the sport can play with experienced members in a relaxed competition.

The club has some excellent facilities with members and guests able to access parking on the area directly behind the green. The club’s kitchen will be open as well as the licenced bar so everyone can relax and discuss the excellent shots they pulled off that day!

he club’s 2026 Spring/Summer programme will start in April with stewards at the club every morning to welcome members and guests for the 10am session. They will oversee a random draw to give everyone a relaxed (often competitive) session. Some members find an hour is enough for them, whilst others are happy to play for up to two hours according to the conditions.

The team also entered the Parish One-Day Knockout competition held in October. Once again, St Brelade was the successful team, and they won the cup after overcoming St Mary in the final.

However, St Clement made it to the final of the plate competition, which they won after a close game against St Peter.

St Clement Pétanque

2025 was a very good year for our Parish Pétanque team. They entered all the competitions that were available to them and acquitted themselves proudly.

The last of the competitions was the 'Carreau Le Crapaud' Knockout Cup and St Clement reached the semi-finals. The cup was eventually won by the undisputed team of the year, St Brelade, who overcame Grouville in a very tense and close match.

Our Parish team have a roll-up at 10am every Tuesday and Thursday at the Le Hocq terrain which is across the road from the Parish Hall.

We would love to welcome other Parishioners who are interested in playing this fun and sociable game, so please come along! We often have coffee and biscuits afterwards, and we have arranged to use Le Hocq tower as a shelter if the weather is inclement.

he principal competition was the Inter-Parish League in which all the Island's parishes competed. Each parish plays a home and away match with three points for a win and one point for a draw. The matches comprise of one single game, four doubles games and a triples game. Despite a relatively slow start, St Clement developed momentum as the season progressed. They were chasing the previous year's champions St Brelade but, in the end, came up just short, finishing a respectable second.

Taking Care of Your Feet Here’s some tips for the colder months The nerves which detect temperature in your feet can be damaged by diabetes. This is called neuropathy. If you have neuropathy you may not be aware that your skin is being damaged. Heat damage can lead to blisters which can become infected and ulcerate.

Check your feet at least once every day - twice is better! This is because neuropathy can also mean that you do not feel pain. If you cannot see to check your feet, ask someone else to have a look or use a mirror to look underneath.

If you are planning to have a bath or soak your feet, use your elbow to check the water temperature.

Your hands can also be affected by neuropathy and thus are generally less sensitive to heat.

ACTION TODAY FOR TOMORROW

Keep your feet warm with socks, make sure that the seam does not cause pressure or irritation to your toes - you can turn them inside out or buy seamless socks. Try to avoid tight elastic around your legs as this can restrict blood flow and result in swelling.

Never apply direct heat to your feet, therefore do not use hot water bottles, electric blankets, heated socks, wheat bags or heat pads.

Never put your feet onto a radiator or heater, keep a safe distance from fires and be aware of the foot-well heater in the car. This can get hot enough to burn your feet.

Check your shoes or slippers before you put them on. Make sure that nothing has fallen into your footwear and that linings and insoles are smooth.

In wet weather, try to wear waterproof boots or shoes. Skin is more fragile when it becomes wet and prolonged wetness can make your feet more prone to damage.

Do not walk around with bare feet. You could easily stand on something which might damage your skin.

Wash and dry your feet carefully, paying particular attention to the spaces between your toes.

CHECK YOUR FEET EVERYDAY If you have diabetes, regular checks will prevent minor cuts or blisters developing into something serious.

Speak to your doctor or healthcare provider for a check up.

When Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne in 1952, there were over 30 million hedgehogs roaming around Britain. As her reign came to an end in 2022, there were less than one million.

do not attach any blame to the late monarch for the demise of the hedgehog population; I merely give pause for thought.

Jersey’s much-loved mammal is now ‘threatened with extinction’.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has placed them on the red list after numbers declined by 30% in just the last 10 years. Our experience mirrors this. We have admitted far fewer hedgehogs this year, with many of them so sick, injured or emaciated that they could not be saved. Yet we fight on, knowing that the work we do at Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group means each and every hedgehog we can treat and release back into the wild is a precious life saved.

We cannot do this alone; we need your help!

Hedgehogs do not hibernate during the mild Jersey winter, except during exceptionally cold snaps. They will be out and about looking for food when the weather allows.

Leaf piles could be a nesting site for hedgehogs

They will have built weatherproof winter nests called hibernacula. Favourite nesting sites are in piles of twigs and leaves, compost heaps, pampas grass, thickets, long grass and log piles. As you begin to tidy the garden ready for spring planting, please be aware that you may be disturbing more than earthworms!

Take great care when turning over your compost heaps or raking your leaf piles.

It goes without saying that you should refrain from using pesticides; there are many cost-effective natural remedies to ensure your garden grows beautifully. If you are strimming or mowing weeds and long grass, please check carefully for sleeping hedgehogs before you start. CHECK BEFORE YOU CHOP!!

If you net your fruit bushes, leave a 13cm gap between the ground and the bottom of the net and put football goal nets away: you would be amazed how many hedgehogs get caught in netting!

If possible, leave some wild areas alone – leaf piles as they rot down, bug hotels, twigs and log piles are also home to the very beetles and bugs and other invertebrates that supply the hedgehog's natural diet. However, supplementing that diet with a small dish of cat food or small dog kibble will be appreciated, particularly in dry weather when there is less natural food around.

Never give mealworms, sunflower seeds, peanuts, or milk and bread (hedgehogs are lactose intolerant).

Repair Café J

Saturday 31st January might have brought blustery weather and cold rain, but inside St Clement Parish Hall the atmosphere was anything but gloomy.

ersey Repair Café opened its doors for the first time this year in St Clement. The wet and windy weather only made the warm buzz of conversation, the smell of freshly baked cakes, and the strum of live music all the more inviting.

The Repair Café movement has three main aims: environmental, educational, and social - and all three were thriving in the Parish Hall that day. The environmental goal is simple but powerful: to keep usable items out of La Collette by fixing rather than discarding them.

The educational aspect encourages people to learn new repair skills and gain the confidence to tackle simple fixes at home. And the social mission might be the most rewarding of all - bringing the community together in an atmosphere of cooperation, curiosity and goodwill.

By mid-morning, the hall was bustling. I had earlier spoken on BBC Radio Jersey at 9.10am, and it seems the airwaves had done their job as within 30 minutes tables were full of people arriving with toasters, lamps, clothing and all sorts of well-loved household items. Despite the rain beating against the windows, the spirit inside was bright and purposeful.

Volunteers and visitors alike gathered around worktables equipped with screwdrivers, soldering irons, and a generous helping of patience and good humour. Over the morning, the team assessed around sixty items and repaired an incredible fiftythree of them!

As usual, most of the items brought in were electrical, reflecting both the opportunities and challenges of modern repair. Volunteers with technical knowhow worked alongside those keen to learn, often explaining what they were doing and offering practical tips on maintenance and safety. The sense of collaboration was infectious; even those waiting for their repairs found themselves chatting over tea and generous slices of homemade cake. The free, freshly baked cakes, including some delectable Bakewell biscuits that vanished almost as fast as they appeared, added to the cosy feeling that this wasn’t just a service, but a social gathering.

Events like this rely on the generous time and skills of volunteers, and we’re always keen to welcome new helpers, especially those interested in electrical repair. You don’t need to be a qualified electrician, just a capable and careful amateur with an interest in how things work. Full support and guidance are provided, and we can even supply tools if needed.

The morning at St Clement Parish Hall was a heartening reminder of what community action can achieve. In just a few short hours, dozens of items were saved from disposal, knowledge was shared, and new friendships were formed, proving once again that repairing isn’t just about things, but about people, place and purpose.

New Healthcare Facilities Programme

From Demolition to Delivery – moving towards construction of the new Acute Hospital at Overdale With Development Works underway to prepare the Overdale site for construction, and with the ongoing procurement process to secure a Main Works Delivery Partner running in parallel, a new hospital for Jersey has never been closer.

If you drive past the Overdale site, you will notice it has changed progressively in less than two years – from delivering healthcare services to demolition, to an active construction site.

Ashbe Construction - along with local sub-contractors have removed the areas of remaining hard standings and residual structures below the ground and cleared the site area. Good progress is being made on the site hoardings, which are currently being installed around the perimeter.

Once complete, a total of 1,500 metres of hoardings will surround the full site.

Other Development Works to provide the required temporary and permanent water, electricity and drainage infrastructure to the site are also underway. Temporary water supplies have been installed along Westmount Road to the site, and the JEC substation installation for the Acute Hospital was completed in December.

In addition, local drainage diversions within the site have been planned and are scheduled for completion to enable the next phase of works. A new borehole has also been provided to supply the Rose Garden at the Crematorium.

Finally, early works are underway to start creating the Active Travel Route from the JEC Substation on the inner road - all under the supervision of an Ecological Clerk of Works and in accordance with Planning Conditions.

A ‘hospital shaped hole’ A ‘hospital shaped hole’ can already be discerned in the hillside – but this will be taken down to near formation levels in the next Development Project that is currently out to tender. The foundations for the new Acute Hospital can then be formed.

With all these preparatory works underway - which have so far been won by local contractors - the site continues to be readied for the Main Works Delivery Partner to begin construction. More than a year of detailed procurement work has culminated in the selection of the Preferred Tenderer – Bouygues UK – to build the Acute Hospital. At the time of writing, they are preparing their final offer for the works, with Meet the Buyer events between Bouygues UK and local suppliers having taken place last month to understand the capability, capacity and skills available locally to support the final phase of the procurement process. The overview presentation was full to capacity and more than 100 face to face meetings between local suppliers, Bouygues UK and the New Healthcare Facilities team were held.

Next steps for the other healthcare sites While delivering the Acute Hospital at Overdale has been the most immediate priority - and is the critical path to all of the future facilities - it is one part of the wider, long-term vision for multi-site healthcare for Islanders.

As the Acute Hospital moves into the construction phase, it begins to unlock further work across the wider portfolio of healthcare sites, including the Ambulatory (outpatients) facility at Kensington Place and the Health Village at St. Saviour. Whilst the Kensington Place site is not available for public use owing to its close proximity to various sensitive activities on the hospital access road, it has been used as much needed storage and operational space.

A significant amount of work is currently underway to refine the briefs and proposals on the other major healthcare facilities’ sites. Over the past six months, the New Healthcare Facilities team has met with more than 150 healthcare colleagues to ensure that the Development Control Plans and Functional Briefs developed nearly three years ago are fully refined and reflect Jersey’s current and future healthcare needs, especially with the ongoing progression of digital technologies in medicine.

In the months ahead, as work continues to progress, more detailed information about the next steps for these sites will be shared. We are looking forward to sharing these proposals with you, neighbours and other stakeholders to take your feedback – just as we did on the Acute Hospital site that has now progressed so far.

MAKE YOUR NAUTICAL DREAM COME TRUE Charity Open Gardens

ISLANDERS hoping to achieve a nautical ambition are invited to apply for the 2026 Jersey Clipper Bursary – a £1,000 cash award aimed at furthering maritime endeavour.

The bursary, which also offers a £500 runner-up award, is designed to assist an Islander of any age to fulfil a particular nautical dream. This could, for example, be a trip on a tall ship, attending a training course, participating in a watersports competition or competing in an ocean race – anything with a maritime theme.

The annual award, a legacy from the three Jersey campaigns in the Clipper Round- the-World Yacht Race, was established 19 years ago through the generosity of Dandara, Les Pas Holdings and UBS.

The successful applicant will follow in the wake of Jamie Le Marquand (17) who used the funds to take part in the 2025 Tall Ships Race, joining the crew of the historic fishing boat Excelsior on the leg from Scotland to Norway.
