TO OUR READERS

Welcome to the 10th edition of West Colfax Lately! This milestone marks not just another issue, but another step forward in the evolution of our historic corridor. Progress may not always move as fast as we’d like—but every step forward is worth celebrating.

West Colfax is in the midst of a significant transition— not only from the continuing growth and impact of 40 West Arts Creative District (page 26) and the inspirational reopening of Casa Bonita and its remarkable restoration (page 14), but also from major infrastructure projects (page 28) that will make this section of “Main Street Colorado” safer, more walkable, and more welcoming. This transition is underway. These are once-in-ageneration infrastructure and placemaking investments that will spark new energy, attract fresh investment, and shape the future of our community for decades to come.

Our small team (just four of us—two part-timers) continues to lead our three community organizations and keeps our focus on helping to energize Lakewood’s historic West Colfax corridor. We’re deeply grateful to our volunteers, members, and many civic partners. Your passion and support make our impact possible. Yes, change is hard. And yes, it takes time. But great things always do. If we stay committed to our shared vision and continue working together, we will build a brighter, more vibrant future for all.

As Lakewood’s Mayor, I see firsthand examples every day of how a thriving community is built, not by one person alone, but by many of us working together. From local businesses and resident volunteers to civic groups and nonprofits, all play vital roles. And that’s clearly evident in Lakewood’s West Colfax corridor! Partnerships and collaboration are a trademark of this community, the oldest and most diverse in Lakewood.

Even with multiple major infrastructure projects underway to help revitalize the area, neighborhood organizations, area business groups, and nonprofits are joining with the city to help during the transition. While we all know there is more work to do to allow the area to reach its fullest potential, the West Colfax community has been resilient, while showing how working together can lead to a brighter future for everyone in this historic corridor.

Get Inspired - Explore RMCAD’s Art Markets, Captivating Competitions & Insightful Artist Talks

Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design (RMCAD) welcomes you to explore artistic masterpieces, inspiring presentations, and the next generation of artists and designers. RMCAD, located off Pierce Street, has been a part of the 40 West Arts District and Lakewood community for more than two decades (and Denver for more than six) and like many of its neighbors - the arts are central to what they do.

RMCAD is home to over 2000 students across online and campus modalities, who study everything from interior design, to illustration, game art, and fine arts. The college’s distinguished faculty, who are also working artists, teach 11 program paths and have prepared more than 4,500 alumni for careers in the arts. This includes providing many students the opportunity to work with local business clients. In RMCAD’s Design Systems class, they’ve worked with an Arvada nonprofit, Horse Protection League (HPL), as well as Bria’s Kitchen and WE Solutions.

Whether in RMCAD’s historic auditorium or its three+ gallery spaces, students, alumni and guest speakers are given the stage to share their craft and express their creativityinviting the larger Denver Metro Area and you to share the experience with them.

RMCAD’s annual events include the Frames n’ Games Festival, perfect for any animated film or gaming fans. Students and alumni present their own original animated shorts, animatics, and 3D renders in a film-like presentation followed by an award ceremony. This year’s event welcomed John Musker, legendary animator and filmmaker known for directing Disney movies like Moana, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules, who joined the festivities and imparted wisdom for the industry’s future directors.

The visiting artists don’t stop there. RMCAD’s Visiting Artist, Scholar, and

Designer (VASD) Program welcomes three to four distinguished professionals on an annual basis for free, public talks that span topics across all art disciplines. The 2024-2025 season included: Justin Martin, creative director and art director for themed entertainment experiences, like Universal Orlando’s Volcano Bay Water Park and Meow Wolf Convergence Station; Deanna Van Buren, co founder and exec director of Designing Justice + Designing Spaces, an architecture and real estate nonprofit; and Mindy Johnson, award-winning author and animation historian, known for her book Ink & Paint –TheWomen ofWalt Disney’s Animation.

If you have an interest in fashion, RMCAD’s annual Fashion Showcase is a spectacular, can’t-miss event. This year, 20 fashion design students had 70 looks hit the runway at The Studio Loft at Ellie Caulkins Opera House. This event is a great representation of the college’s dedication to encouraging student participation beyond the classroom, as

Guests are also invited to join as live audience members at friendly student competitions, like RMCAD’s Design Slam. This year’s event included a fun team challenge where students had three hours to build a functional chair using only cardboard and one roll of tape that could hold at least 200 lbs.

Change Nothing, Improve Everything: Inside Casa Bonita’s Joyful Reawakening

Full disclosure: This isn’t a traditionally objective article. It’s part feature, part love letter (with the adjoining open letter). Why? Because I’m a longtime fan of the Casa Bonita experience and the memories it fosters for families and friends—and after watching the iconic pink palace reawaken over the past year, I’ve become a big fan of the vision and people behind it, too.

A little more than a year after South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, reopened the doors to a fully restored Casa Bonita in May 2023, their vision for honoring the past while raising the bar has transformed the beloved institution for a new generation.

When the reopening was announced, Casa Bonita became one of the most exclusive dining establishments in Colorado. More than a million people joined the waitlist to enter a lottery to receive an invitation to purchase tickets. In October 2024, Casa Bonita opened its doors to the general public and started accepting reservations sans lottery. The legendary restaurant now serves about 15,000 guests a week, with visits averaging 3-4 hours as families take in the cliff divers, puppet shows, Black Bart’s Cave, and a menu reimagined by James Beard-nominated chef Dana Rodriguez.

Much of that momentum was built under the leadership of Brand President, Marti Winer, who joined Casa Bonita shortly after its reopening. She brought deep hospitality experience and helped establish the operational structure, culture, and community partnerships that the team continues

RIGHT: Marti sits comfortably in Casa Bonita’s hidden VIP suite while taking questions for this interview, before taking the interviewer on a tour of the restored complex.

to grow today. Though Marti will be stepping away from her day-to-day role at Casa Bonita in August to return to Las Vegas, she will continue to serve as an advisor for Casa Bonita to support the long-term success of the business.

Behind the scenes, a team of more than 450 fulland part-time employees keeps the experience as joyful and unexpected as ever. Encouraged to be their authentic selves, the staff bring the place to life every day. As Marti described it, “Casa Bonita is a 51-year-old startup. Every day we’re learning and improving, and we get to do it in one of the most unique places in the world. As a leadership team, our job is to listen—to our staff, to the community, and to our guests. Patrons know what this place means. That connection is sacred.”

It’s a delicate balance: preserving the quirks and memories that made Casa Bonita famous while

introducing modern touches that elevate the experience. “Everyone remembers Casa Bonita a certain way,” Marti adds. “Living up to that— or surpassing it—is a high bar.”

The secret to meeting that bar lies in the owners’ vision and the dedication of the staff, bringing it to life every day. Trey Parker and Matt Stone set the tone from the start with their mantra: change nothing, improve everything. That spirit permeates every corner of the experience, from the revamped kitchen to the hidden services tucked away in the sprawling 56,000-square-foot building.

“People used to come despite the food— now they come for it,” says Jane Frances, a Lakewood resident, who has visited Casa Bonita both before and after the new ownership. “Chef Dana and her team have completely reimagined the menu without losing the soul of Casa

Bonita. It’s still fun and familiar, but now it’s genuinely delicious.”

That blend of fun and familiarity is part of Casa Bonita’s lasting charm. It’s why people travel from across the U.S.—and even as far as New Zealand—to relive memories or make new ones. This year, the focus is expanding outward: building stronger ties with the neighborhood and investing in partnerships that support the West Colfax corridor. This includes hosting school visits and working with local nonprofits like 40 West Arts District, which brings youth groups during its summer camps to the restaurant for lunch, shows, and an afternoon of adventure.

Local businesses have felt the ripple effects, too. “Casa Bonita’s revival hasn’t just brought back memories—it’s helped jumpstart local business,” says Jackie Martuscello, who owns WestFax Brewing Company with her husband Anthony. “From ride-shares to nearby food and beverage establishments and the art scene, we hear it every day: having Casa Bonita open again has lifted up the whole corridor—and the new team there have been wonderful neighbors.”

So what’s next? Marti’s original vision—to grow thoughtfully, expand hours, introduce new experiences, and increase community impact— continues to guide the path forward. And the team she built remains committed to preserving the magic!

“We’re not just a restaurant,” she reminds us. “The magic of Casa Bonita: it’s a memorymaker!” Casa Bonita’s future remains as bright (and pink) as ever.

“It’s been the honor of my career to help reopen Casa Bonita,” she said. “The team here is extraordinary. They’re the heart of the place now.” That heart is what keeps the 50-year-old icon not just alive— but ever-evolving.

And this new story is just getting started.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We join the entire Casa Bonita team in thanking Marti Winer for her leadership and wishing her all the best in her next chapter.

Casa Bonita An Open Letter to Matt Stone & Trey Parker

Dear Matt and Trey,

On behalf of the entire Lakewood community, our local business owners, civic leaders, and countless generations of Casa Bonita fans, we extend our deep gratitude to you both for saving—and elevating—this beloved landmark. Your decision not only to purchase but to painstakingly restore Casa Bonita was more than an act of nostalgia—it was an act of vision, heart, generosity, and love. You honored your commitment to “change nothing and improve everything,” and in doing so, you brought back to life an iconic cornerstone of West Colfax and a cultural treasure of Colorado.

We recognize that this was no small feat. The attention to detail—from faithfully restoring the 50,000+ sq. ft. destination, to the reinvention of the menu to create a real culinary experience— has transformed Casa Bonita into something greater than it ever was, without sacrificing what made it magical.

Your investment has had a ripple effect— revitalizing West Colfax, drawing new attention to the surrounding art district, sparking new tourism, and lifting the spirits of small businesses who benefit from the increased foot traffic and renewed interest in the area.

A longtime patron, who first visited Casa Bonita in the 1970s as a child, said it best after her first return visit: “I was afraid the magic would be gone, but somehow, they made it better. It’s not just a restaurant again—it’s a dream come true.”

Trey and Matt, thank you for your vision, your commitment, and your belief in the cultural importance of Casa Bonita. Your contribution to our community has left a lasting legacy—not

just in bricks and waterfalls, but in hearts and memories.

We encourage everyone to watch the documentary, Casa Bonita !Mi Amor! to learn more about Matt, Trey, and their team’s experience. Will it be worth it? “TOTALLY!”

With love and gratitude,

The Lakewood Community (residents, business owners, civic leaders, & Casa Bonita fans everywhere)

MISSION: Service Leadership

Now more than ever—community matters. As social beings, we know we are better humans when we are connected to our community.

Amid a rapidly changing modern life, and increasingly polarized social and economic viewpoints, an ever-growing number of individuals are seeking a greater sense of stability and connection. Experts across fields— from spiritual leaders to social scientists and mental health professionals—emphasize the importance of strong local community ties. These connections help us feel grounded, supported, and engaged. Belonging to a community fosters a sense of local ownership and accountability that positively impacts our health, personal growth, and even our economic opportunities.

This is what WCCA is all about! “WCCA brings people together. It’s not just an association—it’s a catalyst for collaboration and a cornerstone of what makes West Colfax special,” says WCCA Vice Chair Shanna Powell.

Serving Lakewood’s West Colfax corridor for 25+ years, West Colfax Community Association (WCCA) is a nonprofit community organization that serves as both an energizing force and unifying platform for West Colfax business owners, residents, and neighborhood, civic, and nonprofit organizations. Through its programs, partnerships, and policy pursuits, WCCA works together on the shared vision to continue, expand, and accelerate the renaissance of Lakewood’s West Colfax and its iconic character as a vibrant commercial and entertainment destination and collection of unique neighborhoods. “I’ve been proud to serve with WCCA,” adds FirstBanker and WCCA Board Member Steve Bradley. “The group’s commitment to service, economic vibrancy, and community advocacy is unmatched.”

WCCA members are West Colfax advocates, dreamers, entrepreneurs, and organizers—who respect one another and our diverse histories, as we champion positive change to make West Colfax an ever-better place to live, work, and play through inclusive engagement, creativity, innovation, and a keen interest in preserving

West Colfax history and authenticity. “I’ve watched West Colfax grow and transform over decades,” explains Ron Seigneur, longtime board member and corridor business owner, “WCCA’s mission has been at the heart of that progress—connecting neighbors, supporting businesses, and making sure our community has a voice.” As active advocates of this historic corridor, WCCA members and their neighborhood leaders have always played a role in Lakewood policy matters—from the allinclusive Lakewood Comprehensive Plan to the various Neighborhood Area Plans to the West Colfax Vision 2040 Action Plan.

WCCA’s Impact programs, such as the West Colfax Lately Magazine, annual Legend and Momentum Awards, Micro-Grants, Colfax Clean-up Days, and The ‘SUPPORT LOCAL’ West Colfax Passport Program—just to name a few–make a difference. “Helping give my business a fresh coat of paint might seem like a small thing,” says Fran DeJarnette, a WCCA business

member, “but for me, WCCA gave my business a boost when it really needed it.” WCCA was also integral to the formation and ongoing support of 40 West Arts District. Members were strong advocates for its creation and were always the first patrons to support the new arts programming ushered in by our statecertified creative district.

Aspiring to be the best place to connect with the ENERGY of Lakewood’s West Colfax community, WCCA is focused on providing three fundamental elements:

1. Strong connections to our community

2. Timely and accurate information

3. Enduring support for Historic West Colfax

All three are tied into WCCA’s mission: Leadership through service. And everyone is welcome to join in and lend a hand—and have some fun while energizing our community. Together, we can make a difference! Learn more at https://westcolfax.org

Impact Arts: Serving Lakewood Since 2011

When you think about the type of community you want to live in, and the kind of person you want to be, what comes to mind for you? Do you want a City that is pedestrian-friendly and beautiful, with thriving local businesses and public art? Do you see yourself with purposeful hobbies like playing the guitar or knitting, and surrounded by meaningful connections with close friends and neighbors? And, did you realize, the arts contribute to all of this and more?

The arts improve our physical health, and provide greater social connection, social cohesion, and community well-being. For older adults, arts participation and engagement is linked to positive health outcomes. And from early childhood through adolescence, arts education boosts the social and emotional health of students, helping them to better cope with their feelings and bounce back from adversity (taken from scientific studies and research through the National Endowment for the Arts).

40 West Arts District has served in the role of fostering engagement and connection through the arts for nearly 15 years. We are proud of the work we have accomplished in the City of Lakewood, from executing on large-scale murals and sculptural installations, to hosting or supporting 200+ arts events per year, to serving tens of thousands of visitors annually completely free-of-charge.

Embedded in our mission is increasing accessibility to the arts for all. We think everyone should have access to creative experiences and that’s why our public programming is free and open to all. Additionally, we know that thriving local economies help residents, visitors, and neighborhoods alike. That’s why we’ve worked alongside the Lakewood-West Colfax Business Improvement District and West Colfax Community Association to help multiple local artistic businesses either open or relocate to the area. Lakewood Arts, Pirate: Contemporary Art, Next Gallery, Edge Gallery, the Chicano Humanities Arts Council (CHAC),

The 2024 40W Arts Summer Camp was a resounding success, with students receiving instruction in multiple art forms including theater and fine art, all freeof-charge.

Joyful attendees to the Glazed Ceramics May 2025 Family Pride party enjoy hands on art-making at the event, hosted in conjunction with Edgewater Pride.

The Three Leaches Theatre, The Painted Pixel, and Memento Mori Gallery are all examples of entities in Lakewood, along the West Colfax corridor, as a direct result of 40 West Arts.

In fact, 40 West Arts is a driver of local economic activity overall. In a single given year, we are awarded over $150,000 in grants alone (individual years vary). This money gets poured right back into the local economy through artist stipends, free events, placemaking and public art projects, and more, which means that in a decade and a half, we have reinvested approximately $2.2 million in the City of Lakewood and the West Colfax corridor.

“The creation of the Arts District was more than a celebration of arts and culture in an underserved area,” says 40 West Arts Board Chair Bill Marino. “It was also a deliberate economic development strategy aimed at driving revitalization. Beyond the direct impact of our programming,” Marino continues, “each visitor, according to a study by Americans for the Arts, contributes an average of $31 in additional local spending. Over the past decade, our more than 100,000 visitors represent an estimated $3.1 million in added economic activity for our local economy.”

40 West Arts along with our partners is committed to community in everything we do. Through our Artist in Residence and Poet Laureate programs, we deploy creative individuals at local affordable housing complexes, senior living centers, public parks,

and more, to reduce barriers to accessing these programs. Materials are always provided freeof-charge, and classes are beginner and familyfriendly. Our Youth Summer Camp program is totally free to participants, including all materials, snacks, and meals.

And our gallery, 40 West Gallery, is fundamentally an inclusive space that prioritizes accessibility. We accept work from every single artist who submits. We waive submission fees for students at any level in their educational journey, and within any program (even if it does not apply to the arts). And, we turn over the gallery entirely to 3-5 groups per year for exhibition space, free of charge. In just two years groups have included Think 360 Arts, the Colorado Scholastic Art Exhibit, and the Colorado Women’s Caucus for the Arts. Additionally, diversity is at the heart of everything we do. Every year we host a womenfocused exhibit, an LGBTQ+ exhibit and variety show, and a Latina/o/x and Indigenous show. These exhibitions are curated by members of their communities, and those individuals are paid to do this work to bring these special experiences to our district.

40 West Arts believes that in-person connection, human collaboration, and civic engagement are important now more than ever. In an increasingly disconnected society, we provide a place to land, stay, and take part in something creative. We are proud to have served the City of Lakewood since 2011, and we look forward to many more decades to come!

Culverts & Crosswalks:

Lakewood Launches $90M Projects to Improve West Colfax

Infrastructure has long been an issue along West Colfax. Based on the way the corridor evolved and developed over the last 150 years, from its pioneer days and rural roots, through war times and housing booms, to its mid-century heyday —long before the city of Lakewood was incorporated in 1969—West Colfax has suffered from a lack of infrastructure.

Lakewood is taking a giant leap forward in West Colfax infrastructure development along with two major improvement projects aimed at making the West Colfax Avenue safer, more accessible, more resilient to flooding, and more economically viable for redevelopment that would spur more revitalization.

Although planning has been in the works for years and preliminary work began in early 2025, the projects were officially unveiled at a well-attended press conference in March, the North Dry Gulch Project and the West Colfax Transportation Safety Project mark the largest investment in the city’s history—an estimated $90 million expenditure running through 2027. This major investment was augmented by the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) $10 million grant to the City of Lakewood to implement West Colfax safety improvements. This project is one of 30 others funded in the metro area by $58.9 million in grants as part of the State of Colorado’s Safer Main Streets Initiative.

Infrastructure Progress: The City of Lakewood invests millions in the future of the West Colfax corridor through multiple infrastructure projects. Construction activity will continue through 2026 and part of 2027. Jesus with the construction team gives a thumbs up with the placement of another culvert for the North Dry Gulch Project.

Tackling Decades of Flooding

The North Dry Gulch Project targets one of Lakewood’s most persistent problems: urban flooding. Over decades of development, natural drainage pathways have been disrupted, putting homes and businesses at risk during heavy rains.

“This project will reroute floodwaters away from more than 150 properties,” explained Raymond Hill, Lakewood’s city engineer for capital projects and utilities. “Instead of water flowing through neighborhoods, it’ll be directed underground through a large box culvert system.”

By removing these areas from the floodplain, the city hopes to offer lasting relief to property owners who have long lived under threat of flood damage.

Co-owner of Chicago Style Beef and Dogs on West Colfax, Dianne Zimmerman, shared that her business has suffered from flooding numerous times throughout its nearly 30 years on Colfax.

“These improvements are finally coming,” Zimmerman said. “I’m happy about that, but I’m also worried about the impact while the construction is going on. We count on our regulars, and I hope they stick with us through all of this.”

“I’m a longtime Jefferson County resident,” said Scott West, GM at Prestige Imports. “We have had many, many opportunities to relocate our dealership, but we believe in West Colfax—that’s why we invested $30M+ in our new state-ofthe-art Denver West Porsche dealership and are in process of renovating our Audi dealership, too. We want to stay on Colfax—it’s Main Street Colorado!”

Making West Colfax Safer for Everyone

The West Colfax Transportation Safety Project addresses a different but equally urgent need:

motorist, pedestrian, and cyclist safety. As one of Lakewood’s busiest corridors, West Colfax has always lacked essential infrastructure such as continuous sidewalks, safe crosswalks, and accessible bus stops.

“It’s easy to find many locations where there is no sidewalk and buildings within a few steps of the street,” says City Engineer Raymond Hill. “That makes it very difficult to traverse these areas on a bicycle or in a wheelchair— and even difficult to walk to some areas. Upgrades in the project area (from Sheridan Blvd. to Teller St.) will include expanded sidewalks, safer intersections, new Z-crossing crosswalks, and improved transit access. These enhancements are especially important for residents with disabilities, seniors, and anyone who walks or bikes through the area.”

A Coordinated Effort

City officials emphasized that doing both projects simultaneously is the most efficient path forward.

“By tackling both projects at once, we reduce the duration of disruptions and overall costs,” Hill noted. “The city is working closely with local businesses to minimize negative impacts during construction.”

Outreach efforts include a dedicated project website, public updates, and office hours with staff to answer questions and address concerns.

“Holding office hours at The HUB has allowed local business owners to have direct access to city project personnel, so anyone interested can learn more and ask questions,” said Gloria Enger, longtime property owner in the corridor. “Meeting at the HUB helped us address concerns about our property during the project.”

Objectives of the Project

Together, these two projects are set to provide lasting improvements for Lakewood residents and businesses, including:

• Streamlined construction timelines and reduced overall costs by coordinating both efforts.

• Protection for over 150 properties from flood damage.

• Safer sidewalks, intersections, and

crosswalks for pedestrians and cyclists.

• Improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

• Enhanced public transportation access along West Colfax.

• More economical redevelopment costs, attracting more new revitalization investment.

Stay Informed and SUPPORT LOCAL!

Construction for both projects is underway and will continue through 2027. While some disruptions are inevitable, the city is urging residents and visitors to remain patient and supportive—especially of small businesses along the corridor.

“Even with changing traffic patterns and endless cone zones, we are hoping people will continue to support our local businesses,” Zimmerman urged.

”While we all know there is more work to do to allow the area to reach its fullest potential,” says Lakewood Mayor Wendi Strom. “The West Colfax community has been resilient, while showing how working together can lead to a brighter future for everyone in this historic corridor.”

To stay updated or raise concerns, locals can visit northdrygulch.com or westcolfaxsafety. com. Project staff can also be reached via phone or text at (720) 251-4567 or by email at info@ northdrygulch.com.

With this bold move and significant investment, Lakewood is laying the groundwork for a brighter future for its oldest commercial thoroughfare with these two major projects. With the many new culverts, the strategically placed crosswalks, and a substantial investment in public art that will follow these infrastructure projects, this will make this part of “Main Street Colorado” not only safer and more accessible— but more beautiful, too!

A New Chapter: Westside Placemaking

Long known for its glitter, grit, and the moniker as the nation’s longest continuous themes further eastward to unite Lakewood’s West Colfax corridor with a common character. The team with community input has crafted a set of placemaking recommendations for the area between Simms and Kipling—ideas now entering the final stretch before implementation.

Part of famous U.S. Route 40, West Colfax—once considered “the Gateway to the Rockies”—has long captured the American spirit, embodying the 1950s car culture and America’s love of the

open road, as in Jack Kerouac’s On The Road, beat generation novel (that mentions Colfax Avenue multiple times). From neon signs and mid-century motels to galleries and gathering spaces–old and new, it’s a place where history and reinvention meet—and where thoughtful placemaking will help write its next chapter. themes.

Community Experiences: West Colfax Style!

Shared experiences bind people together and build community–just like a shared vision draws like-minded people together and builds momentum. The West Colfax community has many places to share experiences–whether that’s a favorite watering hole or one of many West Colfax galleries.

We love our art galleries in 40 West Arts Creative District—West Colfax has some of the oldest and best around (see map on pages 24-25). But if you think that’s all there is to do in the area to meet neighbors and build relationships–wait, there’s more! There are always new or reinvented experiences popping up in the area. From sipping craft coffee or beer in cozy community cafés or historic eateries, to strolling through a blooming garden oasis, attending live music or theater productions, watching molten glass transformed into art in a live studio demo, or singing along with friends at a local karaoke night, West Colfax is bursting with its own authentic experiences.

Whether you’re a longtime local or just visiting, these gems offer a fresh perspective on what it means to explore the area–all with their own distinct community feel. Of course, we encourage everyone to visit the 20+ creative venues in 40 West Arts, but for other ways to Support Local and encounter unique happenings, here are a few of our favorites if you want to spend an afternoon or a full day in the corridor. Bring friends along or meet new ones through these quintessentially West Colfax experiences.

1 - Prismajic: Nothing Else Like It in the Metro Area!

Tucked inside Colorado Mills Mall on West Colfax is Prismajic—a portal to another world. For those that step inside, it’s anything but ordinary. This immersive art experience and event space transports visitors into a surreal dreamscape of color, light, and texture—perfect for curious minds and selfie seekers alike.

Part art installation, performance venue, and gathering space, Prismajic offers a multi-sensory journey through themed environments that change as you move and explore. Whether you’re walking through glowing forests, touching shimmering walls, or losing yourself in mirrored illusions, the space invites you to experience art from the inside out. Part of Prismajic’s charm is its Night Owls Bar—a cozy speakeasy lounge with a creative menu and signature cocktails that’s part of the experience.

“Our commitment here is to build community,” explains Jennifer Mosquera, cofounder, president, and chief creative. “Prismajic is a place for celebrations, a platform for people to perform, and a place to experience all types of art. It’s a space where people can connect with

wonder,” she adds. “In a fast-paced world, this is a place to slow down, be present, and see the extraordinary in the everyday—it’s a whole lot of fun, too!”

From its award-winning immersive art to its themed nights, performances, and pop-up exhibitions, Prismajic is always evolving. Whether you’re seeking a one-of-a-kind date night, a creative outing with friends, or an unforgettable solo adventure, Prismajic is a must-see experience. For more information, hours, or to book a private event, visit: www.prismajic.com.

2 - Veldkamp’s Flowers: A Hidden Gem Always in Full Bloom

On the corner of West Colfax and Hoyt, a slice of European charm has been quietly thriving for over 65 years. Family-owned since 1959, Veldkamp’s Flowers & Gifts (with its large attached green house & garden center) is a sensory experience, featuring vibrant blooms, lush greenery, and seasonal gifts that offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of Colfax Ave. It’s right across Hoyt Street from another classic: Davies’ Chuck Wagon Diner and its famous neon sign.

Step inside and you’ll find everything from fresh-cut flowers to gourmet baskets, plus a stunning garden center just waiting to be explored.

Whether you’re hunting for a thoughtful gift, beautifying your home, or just want a reason to stop and smell the roses, Veldkamp’s makes the visit worth it.

Their garden center is open to the public and always blooming with inspiration, and their digital Edu Center (https:// veldkampsgardencenter.com/edu-center/) offers gardening tips, seasonal ideas, and floral education, so you can take a little green wisdom home with you.

“Veldkamp’s is more than just a flower shop for special occasions,” says William, a 25+ year Lakewood resident. “It’s a place where you can explore different types of flora any time of the year. I stop by Veldkamp’s at least once a month and always learn something new from the friendly and knowledgeable staff.”

Whether you’re an avid gardener, a curious passerby, or someone just looking for a fresh way to experience West Colfax, Veldkamp’s is another local treasure that’s here for you. Stop by Veldkamp’s and then enjoy breakfast or lunch at Davies’ Chuck Wagon, the 1950s-vintage train car diner on the National Register of Historic Places.

3 - Mint & Serif: A Fresh Chapter for Familiar Faces

Nestled quietly against Richey Park on Carr Street, Mint & Serif officially re-opened their doors in April 2024, and owners Aurora and

Spencer Hendrix couldn’t be happier in their new space.

“We absolutely love our new space,” shares Aurora. “This location has more of a neighborhood vibe than both of our other locations. We’re attracting more customers because people are wanting more and more to support small local businesses. They want a space where they can walk in, feel safe, welcomed, and gather with neighbors.”

Looking ahead, the Mint & Serif team have exciting plans. They envision opening a back patio that faces the park and are in the process of obtaining a liquor license to enhance the experience. Their vision is rooted in creating a vibrant, welcoming space that feels as much like a community gathering spot as it does a café.

That spirit of connection is already alive and well. Mint and Serif is more than just a coffee shop—it’s another active community hub. They host monthly First Friday art openings, dance parties, live music, and seasonal markets. “Our monthly dance parties and holiday markets are our most popular events,” notes Aurora.

And the evolution continues. This August, they’re welcoming a new neighbor to the building: Moose + Frankie, a locally owned skincare shop, joining William Haggerty’s All Its Own plant and gifts shop that moved along with Mint & Serif. With more energy, foot traffic, a location adjacent to a popular park, and ongoing local collaboration, Mint & Serif and its new bigger building on Carr Street is shaping up to be a true anchor of community life in the West Colfax corridor.

4 - Brynmor Coffee: More Than a Good Cup of Joe

Also on Carr Street (just south of West Colfax), Brynmor Coffee has quietly become another community favorite since opening in August of 2024.

Founders Amy Genaris and Lacey Collum have created more than just a cafe. They’ve built a welcoming neighborhood gathering place where families, remote workers, and creatives gather for conversation and connection.

“Every week, we meet someone new who says, ‘I live right here—I had no idea you were here!’” says Genaris.

Beyond expertly brewed coffee, Brynmor serves a full in-house breakfast and lunch menu, including vegan and gluten-free options. Their walls feature rotating local art for sale, and they recently hosted a vibrant Mother’s Day market showcasing handmade goods, live music, and their special brand of community spirit.

With plans underway for a back patio and weekly open mic nights, Brynmor is only getting started.

“We’ve been intentional about everything— from our vendors with philanthropic missions to building relationships with every customer,” Genaris says. “This isn’t just a place to get coffee. It’s a space to feel seen, connected, and be part of something meaningful.”

Whether you’re passing through or live just down the street, Brynmor is proof that good coffee tastes even better when it comes with a side of community.

5 - Lakewood Grill: 74 Years of Flavor, Stories, and Song

Long before the City of Lakewood was even incorporated, there was Lakewood Grill. Since 1951, this West Colfax institution has served as a comforting constant—a local landmark where stories are told, meals are shared, and regulars become family.

In short, Lakewood Grill is a community anchor, welcoming travelers, neighbors, and nearby workers with the kind of warmth and familiarity that only seven decades of hospitality can cultivate. For many, it’s simply part of what makes West Colfax feel like home.

But don’t let its history fool you. The food is as creative as it is comforting. From the legendary Postman—a decadent pile of chile rellenos, hash browns, eggs, cheese, and green chile— to the Paisano Pie, a smothered calzone-style masterpiece, the menu celebrates bold flavor and neighborhood flair. The 50/50 burger (half ground chuck, half bacon) is a must-try, and for the healthy types–even the soups and salads are made fresh with care.

The bartenders are charming, quick with a joke, and always ready to share a story or lend an ear. Many of the regulars have become local legends in their own right. It’s the kind of place where everyone really does know your name— or will, by your second visit.

What keeps people coming back generation after generation? “It’s the sense of community and camaraderie the space offers,” explains Ron Seigneur, owner of a local CPA firm, who’s counted among the regulars at the Grill.

Lakewood Grill’s calendar is packed with community events that bring even more life to the space. Live music every Wednesday night from Billy Rendon & the Rhythm Rockers gets the crowd dancing, with surprise guest musicians keeping things fresh. Karaoke Fridays, poker Mondays, and a pool league on Tuesdays and Thursdays keep the weekly rhythm lively, and the outdoor patio buzzing from spring through fall.

Open daily until 1 a.m., with a full weekend breakfast menu starting at 10 a.m., Lakewood Grill is the perfect place to start your day or end your night. With its welcoming spirit, flavorful food, and deep-roots in West Colfax history, Lakewood Grill remains a mainstay for locals and visitors alike.

6 - The Furnace: Where the Glass Glows

If you’ve ever wanted to see molten glass transformed into fine art, The Furnace Glassworks is a must-visit experience of West Colfax.

Located at Colfax and Ammons (adjacent to Lakewood Grill), this working hot shop isn’t just for seasoned artists—it’s a welcoming space where beginners, hobbyists, groups or families, and passersby can stop in, watch the action, or even participate in a workshop.

Owners Corey and Leanne Silverman have cultivated a space that blends creativity with community connection.

Inside, visitors can browse an onsite gallery featuring handcrafted pieces by local and regional artists, or watch live glassblowing demonstrations through the studio’s viewing window.

“We’re all about community, collaboration, and creativity,” the Silvermans shared. “Our goal is to create a space where artists and neighbors can connect, learn, and be inspired.”

Whether you’re booking a private class, planning a unique group outing, or just looking for something unforgettable to do in the district, The Furnace brings the heat…literally.

7 - The Three Leaches Theatre: Arts for Everyone!

Yes, The Three Leaches Theatre has a gallery, but this family-run, community focused venue does so much more! In addition to the dramatic productions produced in the 70-seat black box theater, The Three Leaches (and their partners, such as Flamboyán Theatre) have produced culinary events, karaoke and comedy nights, poetry readings, art demos, art markets and a variety of cultural festivals.

“We are so pleased to be in 40 West Arts Creative District,” says Creative Director Melissa Leach. It’s a perfect fit for us—we are both aligned on the mission to bring a variety of arts and cultural experiences to the West Colfax community.”

The Three Leaches Theatre has provided the metro area with their special brand of theater for 14+ years as a nomadic theater troupe. In

2024, they found a home here (1560 Teller Street) in 40 West Arts Creative District—with its “pay-whatyou-can” approach— theater is accessible to everyone.

“Melissa and her resident partners (like Jonathan Marcantoni at Flamboyán) share our vision for community building and finding creative ways to bring more art experiences to more people,” shares 40 West Arts Board Chair Bill Marino, “that’s a very special combination–we hit the jackpot with these partners!”

8 - WestFax Brewing: Home to 40 West IPA & Colfax Cream Ale

Jackie and Anthony took a chance on West Colfax, locating their first brewery here in March of 2016, as Lamar Station Plaza was in transition and just as the local art district was gaining more traction. And the rest is history!

This award-winning brewery is now one of most popular destinations for locals in the corridor. Even its name embraces the corridor! Many casual afternoon meetings are held here–some turning into impromptu Happy Hours! As an

official 40 West Arts venue, WestFax does curate artists for its taproom walls, but in addition to its great selection of craft beers, WestFax is also a social gathering place for trivia, comedy, and other themed nights as well as sporting events (especially their beloved Buffalo Bills). They regularly have the best local food trucks parked out front, ready to serve patrons in the taproom and the outdoor seating area–just steps from the famous Casa Bonita fountain.

“Jacki and Anthony are such great people,” says Marti Winer, part of the leadership team at Casa Bonita. “While our restoration was under construction, they were very gracious, allowing us to use their space when needed. They helped us feel welcome here!”

It’s no surprise—Casa Bonita now carries craft beer brewed right next door at WestFax.

9 - Casa Bonita: The OG since 1974!

This list would not be complete without a mention of the OG of Immersive Art and Entertainment Experiences: Casa Bonita! To the delight of the local community and millions of fans worldwide, Casa Bonita has been revived and restored by the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The iconic Mexican-themed restaurant and entertainment

destination that Roadside America calls the “World’s Most Exciting Restaurant” has been a fixture for more than 50+ years on Lakewood’s historic West Colfax Avenue.

And the new ownership and their team have fully engaged with our local community from the very beginning, for example, keeping employees and paying them to work at local nonprofits during construction, and helping support and enhance the experience of attendees at 40 West Arts Summer Youth Camps.

“The investment by Matt and Trey in our community through their restoration of this iconic destination was a godsend for us. We can’t thank them enough!” says Bill Marino,

champion for all-things West Colfax, echoing the sentiment of city officials and local businesses.

Marino also adds, “When you visit the Pink Palace or after having a beer at WestFax, be sure to visit The HUB at 40 West Arts right across the parking lot (between Key Bank and Burger King). In addition to the galleries—plenty of special events happen there—from live music during First Fridays to magic shows to one-day festivals, such as Chicken Fest every September. And in the same plaza, I’d also recommend visiting all the locally owned eateries, including Yabby Hut, Pho 2 Love, and Neveria La Delicia…YUM!”

Read more insights about Casa Bonita on pages 14-19.

10 - RMCAD: A Creative & Historic Gem

Behind Lamar Station Plaza and Casa Bonita, sits the campus of Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. History, art, and architecture lovers will enjoy this venue, also on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to serving its 1200+ students (both online and on campus), they have a program that serves the greater community: The Visiting Artist, Scholar, and Designer (VASD) Program values curiosity and explores critical and diverse inquiry through a variety of events with leading national and international creatives. This program unites the entire community and opens its doors to the metro area by inviting the public to attend evening artist talks by a roster of distinguished guests. These guests also engage with RMCAD students and faculty through private events, such as studio visits, gallery talks, and workshops. Learn more here: vasd.rmcad.edu/2024/2025-series.

West Colfax has some of the most iconic destinations in the metro area. With all the activity going on in the corridor, there is never a shortage of things to do. The corridor is constantly evolving, and so are its many varied entertainment options. These authentic West Colfax experiences are ideal opportunities to share with family and friends, to deepen relationships with neighbors, or to make new friends. Way of the Artist

Hai-howell-bun–a form of erasure prose followed by a haiku made from 3 unerased lines. Invented by Ashley Howell Bunn

I was a young artist in Brooklyn, riding up an elevator to a gallery after pushing the bronze colored 14th floor button that lived between the 12th & 15th circles. None of us were superstitious but Sarah Manguso declared an ominous truth to the five students in her prose poetry seminar: “You can’t make good art unless you’re on antidepressants.” I felt out of place among my classmates as they nodded in agreement Was I bad at art because I just smoked pot? It wasn’t until years later that I learned through a few more of Manguso’s books that she was embarking on what would be the hardest part of her life at that moment. But also, I had come to realize, it wasn’t about the antidepressants… it was about the progress we make as artists through pain, or maybe despite.

40 West Arts District is entering our own progress through pain moment as construction begins to enter the corridor. Yes, we are faced with the sprouting of orange traffic cones, the strips of hollows and holes in the roads, the buzzing and bellows of jackhammers outside our windows but let’s not skip over what feels like the 13th floor of our story Let’s, instead, look at the history of Colfax as a way to see how bright our future really is.

In the 1800’s West Colfax was a dirt road throughway for trade from our humble downtown to the mountains. Post World War II brought automobiles that boosted travel and the necessities of business that we see today boomed as Route 40 led to expansion at incredible rates, replacing agriculture and working class communities with remnants of what is the business district of West Colfax today. Then, alternate interstate development through Colorado left a once thriving East-West golden age out in the cold. Spurts of energy in the 1960’s-1980’s led to exciting development of small businesses and housing but for the most part we were forgotten…until now.

Efforts by the Lakewood-West Colfax BID and the 40 West Arts District to create a cleaner, more inclusive, and thriving section of our city might feel daunting but we will persevere, we will come out on the other side of this construction with a stronger, safer community. 40 West Arts District will remain open, we will keep building connection and creativity. We invite you to join us for every first Friday and activation–our parking lots will still hold you and our galleries will still enrich you! We’re going to keep making art, so let that Subaru in the zip merge, and let’s all stick together because what’s on the other side is worth it! Progress through pain is the way of the artist.
