elcome back to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House! After eighteen months of uncertainty, perseverance, and creativity, we finally find ourselves back on stage to open our 39th Season. First and foremost, we would like to extend immense and heartfelt thanks to you, our patrons, for supporting us through this challenging time. We would not be in this fortunate position of stability and optimism without your donations, words of encouragement, and engagement with the digital and in-person events we explored during the last year and a half. Our artists and crew are back to work, the chorus is in great voice, and the orchestra is in the pit— all awaiting that first downbeat. At long last, the curtain rises again with Puccini’s action-packed Tosca, one of opera’s most-beloved masterpieces. What better opera to celebrate our return to the Ellie? In true Opera Colorado fashion, this is a classic, opulent production—a feast for the eyes as much as the ears. We have a fantastic cast of new and returning singers, including Melissa Citro, who you may remember as Minnie in La fanciulla del West (2016) and Rafael Davila, making his Opera Colorado debut. Luis Ledesma returns to make his Opera Colorado mainstage debut after his enchanting performance in Canciones de Nuestras Tierras with the Denver Botanic Gardens last
spring. We also welcome Louisa Muller, making her Opera Colorado directorial debut. Tosca is the start of a glorious season of programming, both on and off the mainstage. In February, we’ll present the regional premiere of Moravec and Campbell’s The Shining, based on Stephen King’s chilling novel. Bizet’s Carmen, a perennial favorite filled with some of opera’s most iconic music, closes the mainstage season. Outside of the Ellie, we continue to find innovative ways to share new works and artists through our Opera Colorado Amplified programming. We invite you to tune in to the digital premiere of a brand-new co-commission, UNKNOWN, featuring music by Shawn Okpebholo and poetry by Marcus Amaker. The song cycle honoring the centennial of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier will be available on demand at urbanarias.org from November 11-18. After many months of creating digital resources, our Education and Community Engagement programs are back in person. We are excited to bring touring productions, customized workshops, and literacy programs to Colorado’s diverse communities. It’s great to be back. We hope you enjoy the performance and are truly thrilled to see you back in your seats, ready to experience the magic of live opera once again.

SYNOPSIS CHARACTERS • Floria Tosca (soprano)–One of Rome’s premier opera singers. • Mario Cavaradossi (tenor)–A painter and Tosca’s lover. • Baron Scarpia (baritone)–Rome’s chief of police. • Sacristan (bass)–The caretaker of the Attavani family chapel. • Cesare Angelotti (bass)–An escaped political prisoner and friend to Cavaradossi. SETTING Rome in June of 1800, in the midst of Napoleon’s invasion of Italy.

Act I - The Attavani Family Chapel at the basilica of Sant’Andrea della Valle Cesare Angelotti, a newly escaped political prisoner, searches for sanctuary. Angelotti hides inside his family’s private chapel as the sacristan and then Mario Cavaradossi enter.

Cavaradossi is working on a portrait of Mary Magdalene. He explains to the sacristan the hidden harmony of his two muses. After the sacristan leaves, Angelotti reveals himself to his friend. Their reunion is brief, as Angelotti must hide upon hearing Floria Tosca from outside. Tosca enters, accusing Cavaradossi of being with another woman. Cavaradossi reassures Tosca of his fidelity, and they agree to meet later that evening. Angelotti and Cavaradossi renew their discussion, only to be interrupted by a cannon shot—the police know of Angelotti’s escape. The friends flee to Cavaradossi’s home.
The sacristan returns to rehearse with the choir boys for a celebration of Napoleon’s announced defeat. Then Baron Scarpia, Rome’s chief of police, enters, searching for Angelotti. He finds evidence and correctly assumes Cavaradossi is hiding his friend. Tosca enters, looking for Cavaradossi. Sensing her tendency towards jealousy, Scarpia convinces her Cavaradossi has been unfaithful and sends her chasing after him in a jealous rage. Scarpia’s men follow her, hoping to find Angelotti. With the sound of the choir swelling behind him, Scarpia vows to have Tosca for his own. Act II - The Palazzo Farnese Scarpia is in his apartment, thinking lecherous thoughts about Tosca. Spoletta, one of Scarpia’s spies, arrives announcing they have not found Angelotti but have arrested Cavaradossi. Scarpia interrogates Cavaradossi, and both hear Tosca performing in the courtyard. Scarpia sends for Tosca, demanding information. She refuses until Scarpia begins to torture Cavaradossi. To protect her love, Tosca gives up Angelotti’s location. Cavaradossi is infuriated by Tosca’s actions. News arrives, announcing Napoleon is now winning and marching on Rome. Cavaradossi celebrates; however, his gloating cries of defiance enrages Scarpia. The police drag him away to be executed. Now alone in the room, Scarpia offers Tosca a cruel ultimatum: submit to his lustful desires or Cavaradossi dies. Horrified, Tosca pleads for mercy. Realizing there is no other way, Tosca finally agrees.
Scarpia promises a mock execution for Cavaradossi, but slyly he prepares a real one. Tosca demands a letter of safe conduct for herself and Cavaradossi before she submits. As Scarpia writes the letter, Tosca quietly palms a dagger. Scarpia rises to defile Tosca, only to be met with the sharp end of his own blade. “This is the kiss of Tosca,” she defiantly cries, fleeing with the letter. Act III - The Castel Sant’Angelo Dawn the following day, Cavaradossi bribes a jailer for pen and paper to write Tosca a final letter. To his surprise, Tosca rushes in with news that the execution is a fake. She teaches him how to feign an execution.
They dream of a future after their escape, only to be interrupted by the firing squad’s arrival. Tosca waits with bated breath. The firing squad takes their place. They shoot. Cavaradossi drops to the ground. Tosca quietly appreciates Cavaradossi’s performance. Once the firing squad exits, she runs to Cavaradossi, only to discover he is truly dead. A shout goes up. Scarpia is dead. Tosca knows she is the prime suspect. With the police closing in, Tosca makes a decision. From the roof of the Castel Sant’Angelo, she leaps to her death.
PROGRAM NOTES
Other themes used by Puccini are musical echoes of reality. During the act one “Te Deum,” the evil Scarpia sings a vengeful monologue as a religious procession passes by. Puccini contacted a priest he knew in Rome to bring realism to the moment by obtaining the correct Roman version of the “Te Deum.” As a former church organist, Puccini knew this hymn varied by region. He also located an expert in church bells to identify the pitches of the bells rung for early Matins services and the
Puccini knew how to use his music to pull at our heartstrings. In Tosca’s closing moments, he brings back the theme from Mario’s yearning act three aria as Tosca takes her own life. Some critics have asked why Tosca’s death would be underscored by a melody she has never heard within the opera. Yet Puccini’s intentions are clear. The original text to the phrase is, “My dream of love has vanished forever.” Mario sang those words while convinced he would die without being reunited with his beloved. Now he lies lifeless, and it is Tosca who must face the passing of their dream. Whether or not Tosca heard the music, the sentiment rings true. Tosca premiered in Rome on January 14, 1900. Both place and date reflect the tale itself: the opera takes place in specific locations in Rome, and the Napoleonic Battle of Marengo (June 14, 1800) is mentioned. It is a politically charged story directly tied to that time in history. However, the notion of honest civilians falling into the clutches of a corrupt official is a timeless plot. At the premiere, audiences found it extraordinarily moving, but critics declared it too violent. In the years since, the audience’s view has triumphed. In Tosca, music and words work together to bring these characters to life, and along the way, one may find some striking universal truths. In Tosca, Puccini created melodic themes to help the audience connect characters and scenes throughout the opera. Tosca’s first entrance even establishes one of these themes. As Tosca calls her lover’s name from offstage, “Mario,” she sings the notes of their recurring love theme. Sometimes soothing, at other times agitated, the theme mirrors Tosca’s mercurial moods. Other musical elements highlight the high drama of this thriller. Act three opens with triumphant French horn phrases, which the lovers soon repeat. They sing rapturously of their plans to escape. This theme helps us believe freedom awaits the lovers, making the following turn of events even more devastating.
pitch of the largest bell at St. Peter’s (answer: E below the bass staff). The predawn prelude to act three reveals the evocative results of his research. Even the shepherd boy’s song heard in the distance during the scene is an actual folk melody.

Vibrant, compelling, and unforgettable: that’s Tosca (1900) by Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924). It’s also true of the play La Tosca (1887) by Victorien Sardou (1831–1908). Sardou wrote it especially for legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923), who brought the charismatic title character to life. Upon seeing her magnetic performance in Milan, Puccini knew it had to become an opera. After clearing years of hurdles to acquire the rights, he set to work. Puccini recruited Luigi Illica (1857–1919) and Giuseppe Giacosa (1847–1906), the librettists for La bohème, to shape a singable opera libretto with believable characters who come to life through Puccini’s music.

THE ARTISTS KENDRA BROOM | Shepherd Boy Kendra Broom grew up in California and studied at Manhattan School of Music on the Birgit Nilsson Scholarship and at the Curtis Institute of Music as a Shaun F. O’ Malley Fellow. She is a recipient of the Shoshana Foundation’s Richard F. Gold Career Grant. Her recent appearances include title roles in Pelléas et Mélisande, L’enfant et les sortilèges, and The Rape of Lucretia, with other credits in Le nozze di Figaro (Cherubino), Hänsel und Gretel (Hänsel), and Lakme (Mallika). She was a featured guest with Curtis Institute’s 20/21 Ensemble, OPERA America’s New Works Forum, WWFM’s Celebrating Our Musical Future, and Opera Philadelphia’s Double Exposure. This season, she returns for a second season as an Opera Colorado Artist in Residence. She will perform in the touring productions of The Barber of Seville (Rosina) and The Pirates of Penzance (Ruth), in the mainstage production of The Shining (Mrs. Massey), and in the mainstage production (Mercedes) and student matinee performance (Carmen) of Carmen.

Soprano Melissa Citro’s most recent engagements include the role of Minnie in La fanciulla del West both with Michigan Opera Theatre and Opera Colorado, Marina in Dvořák’s rarely heard Dmitrij at the Bard Festival, Gutrune in San Francisco Opera’s production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. She made her Washington Opera debut as Gutrune in Götterdämmerung, and also performed the roles of Rusalka and Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus with New Orleans Opera, La Wally with the Dallas Opera, and Senta in The Flying Dutchman with Lyric Opera Kansas City.
RAFAEL DAVILA | Mario Cavaradossi Tenor Rafael Davila made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2017 as Don José in Carmen. Other recent engagements include Des Grieux in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut with the San Francisco Opera, the Liceu in Barcelona,
and Valencia, Dick Johnson in La fanciulla del West with Minnesota Opera and Michigan Opera Theatre, a Zarzuela gala at the Mariinsky, Don José and Verdi’s Don Carlo with the Washington National Opera, his debut with Lyric Opera of Chicago as General Alfredo in the world premiere of Bel Canto, his debut with the Macerata Festival and his return to Teatro San Carlo as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci.
STEPANO DE PEPPO | Sacristan Stefano de Peppo is one of opera’s busiest singing actors sought for Italian character bass parts. Notable roles include the title role in Don Pasquale, Dulcamara in L’Elisir d’Amore, Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Mustafa in L’Italiana in Algeri, Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Leporello in Don Giovanni, the title role in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Alphonso in Così fan tutte. Theaters in which he has appeared include the Finnish National Opera, Estates Theater in Prague, Teatro Argentina, Jerez de la Frontiera, Gran Teatro de Cordoba, and Tenerife, Teatro Colon, Teatro Bellas Artes, Teatro Aquascalientes, Monterrey, Mexico, National Theater of Costa Rica, New Israeli Opera, Royal Albert Hall (London), Opera Hamilton, Los Angeles Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, The Atlanta Opera, Arizona Opera, Opera Santa Barbara, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Opera Memphis, Minnesota Opera, Opera New Jersey, Palm Beach Opera, San Diego Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera Tampa, and Washington National Opera. A native Italian, Mr. de Peppo began his musical career as a member of the Children’s Chorus of Teatro alla Scala of Milan for seven years, after which he undertook vocal studies at Civic School of Music in Milan.

Joseph Goodale is a native of Dallas, Texas. He holds a master’s degree in voice performance from Southern Methodist University and a bachelor’s degree from Dallas Baptist University. His previous performances include collegiate productions of Cosí fan tutte (Don Alfonso), My Fair Lady (Henry Higgins), The Fantasticks (El Gallo), and Gianni Schicchi (Marco), in addition to various solo performances. While at SMU, he was an education artist for the Dallas Opera, performing in touring and digital productions of Bizet’s Doctor Miracle (The Mayor). During Opera Colorado’s 2021-22 Season, he will perform in the touring productions of The Barber of Seville (Ambrogio/Figaro cover) and The Pirates of Penzance (Major General), in the mainstage production of The Shining (Crooner) and in the mainstage production (Moralès) and student matinee performance (Dancaìre) of Carmen.
J. ISADORA KRECH | Lighting Design J. Isadora Krech is a Berlin and New York based Lighting and Video Designer working in Opera and Dance. Opera collaborations at Opera Colorado, San Diego Opera, Florida Grand Opera, West Edge Opera, Opera Santa Barbara, West Bay Opera, Yale Arts and Ideas Festival, Whitesnake Productions, Firstlook Sonoma, and more. Dance work has been seen in over thirty U.S. states, Norway, Holland, and Germany. Installations and video art has shown at galleries and festivals in New York, Virginia, Nevada, and California. They have been a guest artist at Williams College, USF, Hollins, and UC Berkeley. Their writing on design aesthetics and performance has
SPENCER LAWRENCE BOYD | Spoletta Spencer Lawrence Boyd has sung leading roles in L’elisir d’amore (Nemorino), La tragedie de Carmen (Don José), Die Zauberflöte (Tamino), and Mireille (Vincent), among others. Originally from Canal Fulton, Ohio, Spencer received a bachelor’s degree from Chapman University, a master’s degree from Kent State University, and a doctoral degree from Indiana University. As an Artist in Residence with Opera Colorado for the 2021-22 Season, he will perform in the touring productions of The Barber of Seville (Count Almaviva) and The Pirates of Penzance (Frederic), in the mainstage production of The Shining (Lloyd the Bartender and Bill Watson), and in the mainstage production (Remendado) and student matinee performance (Don José) of Carmen.
LUIS LEDESMA | Baron Scarpia Mexican baritone Luis Ledesma has established a reputation as a “rich and well controlled baritone” (Opera News). He frequently portrays the heroes and villains of Puccini, Verdi, and the bel canto masters, as well as roles in recent new works in Spanish including Florencia en el Amazonas and El pasado nunca se termina. Recent seasons include US debuts with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, San Diego Opera, and a return to NYCO Opera. Recent engagements include Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Opera Omaha and Pacific Symphony, Augustino in El pasado nunca se termina with Fort Worth Opera, Carmina Burana with the Acadiana Symphony, and the title role of Macbeth with Syracuse Opera.

Recent performances include Rigoletto (Montrerone), Don Giovanni (Masetto), The Rake’s Progress (Nick Shadow), Don Quichotte (Sancho), Schubert’s Winterreise, and Florencia en el Amazonas (Riolobo). He has been seen in Le nozze di Figaro (Antonio), An American Soldier (Major Rose/Spc. Austin Haldemann), The Grapes of Wrath (Traffic Cop/ Peach Checker), and Madama Butterfly (The Imperial Commissioner), all with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Other roles include Gianni Schicchi, Street Scene (Frank Maurrant), Le nozze di Figaro (Figaro), L’elisir d’amore (Dottore Dulcamara), and Acis & Galatea (Polyphemus). Thomas Lynch received his bachelor’s degree from Westminster Choir College at Rider University and his master’s degree from The Boston Conservatory at Berklee. He has participated in young artists programs such as Bel Canto at Caramoor, Seagle Music Colony, and Hawaii Opera Theater. His recent performances include The Great Gatsby (Nick Caraway), Cosi fan tutte (Guglielmo), Eugene Onegin (Commander/Officer), Dialogues of the Carmelites (Marquis de la Force), The Consul (John Sorel), The Manchurian Candidate (Sgt. Raymond Shaw), and Salome (2nd Soldier/John the Baptist cover). Other performances include soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and baritone soloist for Goodall’s Eternal Light: Requiem with the MIT Cambridge Chinese Choral Society. Tom is excited to be returning for a second season with the Opera Colorado Artist in Residence Program, during which he will perform in the touring productions of The Barber of Seville (Figaro/Ambrogio cover) and The Pirates of Penzance (Pirate King), in the mainstage production of The Shining (Horace Derwent)

LOUISA MULLER | Director In the 2018–19 Season, Louisa Muller made directing debuts at Garsington Opera, LA Opera, and Minnesota Opera. In recent seasons she has directed at the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Opera Queensland, and Atlanta Opera. She received considerable critical acclaim for her 2017 staging of Das Rheingold with the New York Philharmonic, which the New York Times called “riveting…a remarkable evening of music theater” and named one of the Best Classical Music Performances of the year. For Wolf Trap Opera, she has directed new productions of Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles, The Rape of Lucretia, Tosca, and Roméo et Juliette. Muller is in her eleventh season on the directing staff of the Metropolitan Opera, where she has helmed revivals of Don Giovanni, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, and L’elisir d’amore. She is on the faculty of the Scuola di Belcanto in Urbania, Italy.
SAHAR NOURI | Chorus Master, Répétiteur, & Assistant Conductor Iranian pianist and conductor Sahar Nouri returns to Opera Colorado for a fifth season, serving as the company’s Chorus Master, Assistant Conductor, and Pianist Coach. Ms. Nouri is the newly appointed Music Director of the Lamont Opera Theatre at University of Denver. She is also the founder and director of Dandelion Opera Institute, a summer training program for young, talented opera singers, pianists, and conductors. While being based in Denver, Ms. Nouri continues to serve as guest coach/faculty with various organizations including San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Opera North Carolina, and more. Previously, Ms. Nouri has been a member of the music staff at Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, Glimmerglass Festival, Utah Opera, Aspen Opera Center, Opera Parallèle, and Opera in the Heights. Her repertoire includes numerous classic operas as well as many world premieres such as: Prince of Players (Carlisle Floyd),
Ronell Oliveri has been designing wigs and makeup for opera, theater, ballet, and film for the past eighteen years for such companies as Minnesota Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, and the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University. Currently, she is the resident Wig & Makeup Designer for Opera Colorado, Opera Omaha, and Central City Opera. In 2007, she was a Primetime Emmy Award nominee as key makeup artist for her work in television. As a wig and makeup artist her professional credits include engagements with Chicago Lyric Opera, LA Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Opera Theater of Saint Louis, and Boston Ballet. Her work can also be seen in several Broadway shows including Wicked, All the Way, and Waitress. Other recent engagements include Miller Theater’s Proving Up, Boston Lyric Opera’s Cavalleria Rusticana, and Opera Omaha’s Montagues and Capulets.
ARI PELTO | Opera Colorado Music Director & Conductor Appointed in 2015 as Opera Colorado’s first-ever music director, Ari Pelto’s “breathtaking wizardry in the pit” (The Denver Post) has been widely celebrated, with Pelto in demand at opera houses and concert halls throughout the United States. At the age of twenty four, Pelto was appointed Assistant Conductor at the Spoleto Festival, and he has since gone on to conduct worldwide. International engagements include performances with Bochumer Philharmoniker and opera productions at New National Theatre of Tokyo and the Teatro Nacional Sucre in Quito, Ecuador. In 2004 he made his highly-praised debut with New York City Opera, conducting La Traviata, after which he became a regular, returning for productions of Madama Butterfly, La bohème, and Carmen. Recent successes include Eugene Onegin at Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Lucia di Lammermoor at Virginia Opera, and La Voix Humaine at Chicago Opera Theater.

Soprano Melissa Citro’s return to Opera Colorado has been a long time coming. As many will remember, this production of Puccini’s Tosca was originally scheduled for May 2020. So, to say it is a joy to finally have her back on stage at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House is an understatement. Citro brings heart and humanity to this role, along with a voice you will never forget. Learn about her journey from cancellation to opening night!
