The season opens with Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile, two genredefying musicians in an explosion of creativity. With the Hot Sardines we find traditional jazz in the lusty grasp of a young generation of performers, a tap dancer among them! Capitol Steps help burst a few political bubbles, while the audience creates the soundtrack for the Swiss theatrical pantomime troupe MUMMENSCHANZ. The King’s Singers, legendary for their unaccompanied vocal harmonies, will take great advantage of June Swaner Gates Concert Hall’s natural acoustics, as will the Colorado Symphony with renowned conductor and soloist Pinchas Zukerman.

Four dance companies show the breadth of movement as artistic expression, from China’s first non-governmentally supported contemporary dance company, to Bill T. Jones’ exploration of the human condition, to Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s display of today’s most exciting choreographers, to Diavolo’s thrilling and dangerous work with stage contraptions.

We also continue our presentation of artists building on the great traditions of concert hall music but eager to express their own experiences of today’s world. The French double bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons added a fifth string to his bass and developed techniques for playing it so that it fits right in to small ensembles of instruments from various world music traditions. Hear that flamenco guitar? It might just have been Renaud’s bass. The exploratory jazz jam band Medeski Martin & Wood allies with Alarm Will Sound (last here for the thought-provoking multi-media show 1969) for an evening of new music created just for us and CU Presents.

Roomful of Teeth, an a cappella ensemble of eight, uses vocal performance practices from around the world to create mesmerizing, thrilling, beautiful sound palettes. The youngest winner of the Pulitzer Prize in music is one of their members. She won the Prize, and the group won a Grammy, for a work you’ll hear in their show. Donal Fox, a pianist of prodigious reach, explores the intersections of improvisation in jazz and Baroque classical music.

We’re also excited to have the it gets better tour come to Denver for a week of anti-bullying residency work in schools and community centers, culminating in a performance featuring six members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of LA and a community chorus created in Denver just for this show.

Following his stunning, sold-out concert for Newman Center Presents last season, mandolinist extraordinaire Chris Thile returns to open our season, this time with legendary American bassist and composer Edgar Meyer. Take a blustery brass lineup, lay it over a rhythm section led by a stride piano virtuoso, and tie the whole thing together with a magnetic, one-of-the-boys frontwoman whose voice recalls another era, and you have the Hot Sardines. This NYC outfit (with a tap dancer) has been called “consistently electrifying” (Popmatters). The Sardine sound—wartime Paris via New Orleans, or the other way around—is steeped in the kind of music Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, and Fats Waller used to make: straightup, foot-stomping jazz. Pianist-bandleader Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and Paris-born singer Miz Elizabeth (who owe their collaboration to meeting via Craigslist) describe their

The Capitol Steps began in 1981 as a group of U.S. Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people who employed them. In the years that followed, having bit the hands that fed them, many of the Steps also ignored the conventional wisdom not to quit their day jobs. The ensemble now tours the U.S., delivering heaping portions of much-needed good humor to the long-suffering American public as the best antidote to politics. MUMMENSCHANZ is a legendary Swiss silent mask theater troupe that performs in a magical, surreal style.

Renaud Garcia-Fons Quartet La Línea del Sur Sat, Jan 10, 2015 / 7:30 p.m.

From the moment Renaud Garcia-Fons first held a double bass at age sixteen in Paris, the future of the instrument was destined for change.

In a flash of insight, he saw possibilities to use the bass to explore all the music that interested him—classical, jazz, Persian, Indian, Mediterranean, South American, and other forms from the world over. He added a fifth string to the high register and innovated bowing and pizzicato techniques. The result is an utterly new sound—an amalgam of double bass, cello, violin, guitar, lute, oud, and more—that exceeds any conventional idea of playing the double bass.

La Línea del Sur features a quartet made up of Renaud on double bass, Flamenco guitarist Kiko Ruiz, accordionist David Venitucci, and percussionist Pascal Rollando.

Alarm Will Sound returns to Newman Center Presents after its provocative multimedia show, 1969, a few years ago. AWS is one of the most creative alternative classical musical ensembles working today. Just beyond the cutting edge, this 20-member group consists of young, unstuffy musicians presenting virtuosic new compositions. Medeski Martin & Wood has been an experimental jazz and jam-band trio since 1992. This improvisation-driven group, led by keyboardist John Medeski, offers a unique, groove-oriented mix drawing from jazz, African music, funk, and hiphop. Both AWS and MMW have performed throughout the world, from Carnegie Hall to the Biennale in Frankfurt, from Lincoln Center to the Montreux Jazz Festival.

This performance marks the premiere of all new works created jointly by the two ensembles for performance at the Newman Center and at the University of Colorado.

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s bold vision—top global choreographers, distinctive groundbreaking works, and virtuoso dancers—has fostered a jewel of a dance company in the American West.

For 17 years, ASFB has served as a prestigious arts incubator and a showcase for choreographic invention, to both popular and critical acclaim. ASFB’s repertoire resonates with eclecticism and energy. The company exudes a European classical aesthetic charged with American athletic vigor. Since 1996, ASFB has commissioned over 27 new works. Among their many choreographer-collaborators are Jorma Elo, Nicolo Fonte, Trey McIntyre, Moses Pendleton, Dwight Rhoden, and Cayetano Soto.

Founded in 2009, Roomful of Teeth is a vocal project dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice. Through study with masters from non-classical traditions the world over, the eight-voice ensemble continually expands its singing techniques and, through an ongoing commissioning project, invites today’s brightest composers to create a repertoire without borders.

Their debut album was released in 2012.

The New York Times called it “sensually stunning.” It was included on many Best of 2012 lists, topping the classical charts on iTunes and Amazon, even breaking into the top 10 on the Billboard charts.

NPR called the album “fiercely beautiful and bravely, utterly exposed.” The album

won a Grammy for Best Chamber Music/ Small Ensemble Performance. In April 2013, ensemble member Caroline Shaw received the Pulitzer Prize in Music for “Partita,” one of the works on the debut album. An iTunes exclusive EP of “Partita” was subsequently released and ranked number one on iTunes Classical charts.

ROT will be joined by a string ensemble from the Colorado Symphony.

Declared “one of the most successful classical/jazz unions in recent memory”

by All About Jazz, Donal Fox and the Scarlatti Jazz Suite Project will bring an electric energy to June Swaner Gates Concert Hall. Fox plays with an improviser’s spirit of adventure, whether playing stride piano on Baroque repertoire or blending the harmonic language of the New Viennese School with bebop. Be prepared to be wowed as he de- and reconstructs Bach, Piazzola and Schumann, adding propulsive grooves and using composed themes as springboards for glorious improvisational flights. Fox has earned a reputation for fluency across the genres which has led to collaborations with jazz artists such as David Murray, John Stubblefield, and Oliver Lake, as well as the Richmond Symphony, American Composers Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony. With his wide-ranging tastes and virtuosity, you can also expect music from Monk, Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman to round out the evening.

it gets better Speak Theater Arts / Gay Men’s Chorus of LA / It Gets Better Project Fri, Apr 24, 2015 / 7:30 p.m. it gets better provides a performing arts response to the difficult issue of bullying, one of the most challenging issues among today’s young adults and adolescents. Written and directed by Speak Theater Arts’ Liesel Reinhart, whose company lives by the mantra “don’t be boring!,” it gets better is infused with the dynamic musical energy of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and the internationally recognized It Gets Better Project.

In the course of a single week, six members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of LA will work closely with students and schools in a series of workshops, rehearsals, and community dialogue. The week will culminate in a performance of the show in the Newman Center and is intended to heighten awareness of bullying and its damaging effects on any community. The show features a local chorus and local guests and will include video and text projections from the archives of the It Gets Better Project.

2014-2015 Season body. Diavolo calls itself “architecture in motion” and fuses many different movement vocabularies—from everyday pedestrian movement to ballet, contemporary dance, acrobatics, gymnastics, martial arts, and hip-hop.

According to Artistic Director Jacques Heim, “What we do on stage is like a live abstract painting. There is no narrative, but strong themes pervade the work such as human struggle, fear, danger, survival, chaos, order, deconstruction, reconstruction, destiny, destination, faith, and love.”

Diavolo’s performances will include Fluid Infinities, a stunning work set to the music of Philip Glass, commissioned by the LA Philharmonic and premiered in The Hollywood Bowl.

We invite you to join us for free Behind the Curtain discussions where artists, members of the ensembles, or experts in the field discuss anything from that evening’s program to the history and influences of the genre to key moments to watch and listen for during the performance.

Talks are free, take place in June Swaner Gates Concert Hall, are open to the public, and start one hour before curtain. Tickets are not required for these pre-performance talks and no RSVP is necessary.

THE LAMONT SCHOOL OF MUSIC & DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE The University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music presents more than 300 concerts

a year, many of them free. Complimentary performances include concerts by the symphony orchestra, choirs, wind ensemble, soloists, jazz ensembles, and steel drum ensemble. In addition to free concerts, faculty recitals and guest artist performances are presented with a $10 ticket price. DU students, Pioneer Card holders, and other students with valid ID are complimentary.

Fall and Spring Lamont Operas and Musicals, South Pacific and The Merry Wives of Windsor, are reserved seating ranging from $11 to $30.

Summer and holiday carillon concerts are presented on the Ritchie Center lawn by artists from around the nation.

About 100 performances in the Newman Center each year are produced by beloved local non-profit organizations. These avid philanthropists and winners of the 2014 Colorado Business Committee for the Arts’ John Madden Jr. Leadership Award smile when they remember becoming involved in the campaign to create an outstanding center for the performing arts at the University of Denver. Daniel L. Ritchie, then chancellor, invited Judi to head the effort when the Center was only a dream. Later, the Center was named in the couple’s honor.

The couple’s passion for performing arts and education harmoniously intersected with the Newman Center, which is home to exceptional performance venues and DU’s Lamont School of Music and Department of Theatre. “Dan Ritchie has often said that love is the principal ingredient in any successful building,” says Judi. “The Newman Center, as well as the University’s many other new buildings, show just how true that is.” The Newmans appreciate the masterful collaboration between Ritchie and DU Architect Emeritus Cabell Childress, and the expertise of Joseph Docksey, then director of the Lamont School, and William Temple Davis, then chairman of DU’s Department of Theatre. They delight in the superb array of Newman Center Presents’ programs presented

by Executive Director Stephen Seifert.

Prominent in Denver’s cultural community, the Newmans serve on many boards. Among those, Bob is a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. He also is a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the Daniels College of Business at DU. ABOUT THE COMPANY Ballet’s dynamic story in the American West In 1996, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Founder Bebe Schweppe invited Tom Mossbrucker and Jean-Philippe Malaty to create a ballet company in Aspen. A unique multidimensional arts organization developed rapidly from the ballet school Schweppe had established in the Rocky Mountains. “Bebe’s vision for Aspen to have its own ballet company was the project of a lifetime,” says Malaty, ASFB’s executive director. “We embarked together on a serendipitous adventure. Eighteen years later, the connection between the dancers and our two communities is deep and inextricable.”

Forging a new frontier The company began modestly, with six dancers. Growth was organic.

Friends in the field—Gerald Arpino, Trey McIntyre, Septime Webre, Dwight Rhoden—offered start-up repertoire. Moses Pendleton’s highly popular Noir Blanc was a seminal event for the young ASFB. It launched a tradition of commissioning new works. An open, exploratory style emerged as Mossbrucker and Malaty tapped the creative scene in Europe where classical ballet was breaking from

its boundaries. The athletic and adventurous American dancers found themselves at a crossroads of dance history. The divide between ballet and modern dance was dissolving.

Innovative business model In 2000, the Aspen, Colorado-based ballet company forged a dualcity relationship with Santa Fe, New Mexico, broadening its scope and lending crucial revenue diversification. Under this hybrid business model, a roster of arts activities takes wing, year-round, in both cities. Performance, education, presentation, and community outreach all join in the mix. Within this innovative structure, ASFB anticipates its 20th anniversary season in 2015-16.

New commissions ASFB’s mission places highest priority on developing new choreography and nurturing relationships with emerging choreographers. The company fostered the early careers of now in-demand global dance makers like Nicolo Fonte (nine commissioned Fonte works in the ASFB repertoire), Jorma Elo (three commissioned Elo works), Edwaard Liang, Jacopo Godani, Helen Pickett, Cayetano Soto, Alejandro Cerrudo, and others. Works by late 20th century masters—William Forsythe, Jiˇrí Kylián, Twyla Tharp—round out the repertoire.

National reputation Based for eighteen years in the American West, ASFB now sits at the vanguard of its field, brandishing a strong national reputation.

Repeat engagements at the American Dance Festival, Harris Theater for Music and Dance, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Joyce Theater, The Kennedy Center, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and Wolf Trap testify to the company’s popularity and ability to please audiences. Overseas invitations arrived and ASFB embarked on international tours to Brazil, Canada, France, Greece, Guatemala, Israel, Italy, and Russia. Premier funders—National Endowment of the Arts, Joyce Foundation, Wolf Trap Foundation, Dance St. Louis, Jerome Robbins Foundation, and Princess Grace Foundation—have supported ASFB’s growth.

Flamenco joins the fold In January 2014, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet announced with pride the addition of Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe under its arts management umbrella. The collaboration with the seven-year old flamenco company provides the benefits of economies of scale and other business synergies, as well as a simpatico artistic alliance. The addition of Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe is a further expression of ASFB’s core mission. It represents an opportunity to celebrate cultural heritage, expand diversity, serve as a catalyst for new ventures, and play a role in fortifying a heritage art form.

Accolades into the future In recognition of their pioneering and innovative model for American dance, Tom Mossbrucker and Jean-Philippe Malaty were honored by the Joyce Theater Foundation with the Joyce Theater Award in 2010.

The 2014-15 season sees the company’s return engagements in Denver, Pittsburgh, and Tucson and debuts in Akron, East Lansing, Penn State, and San Antonio, as well as the Canadian capital, Ottowa. The company anticipates its seventh presentation at New York’s Joyce Theater. The fast evolving Aspen Santa Fe Ballet looks to a bright future with energy and optimism.

BIOS Bebe Schweppe, Founder, grew up in Augusta, Georgia and started dancing at the Georgia Dance Theatre under Frankie Levy at the age of seven. She was invited by Robert Joffrey to study at his school in New York on a full scholarship at age eleven.

Bebe moved to Aspen in 1975 and fifteen years later founded the

In 1996, she invited Jean-Philippe Malaty and Tom Mossbrucker to develop a small professional company in Aspen. Through their combined energies, the Aspen Ballet Company was born a year later. Shortly after, new performing opportunities beckoned in Santa Fe, upon which the company was renamed Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. Bebe speaks with pride when she considers the changes that have occurred over the years to her “baby”. “The Company has evolved to having earned a name of its own—ASFB. What a treat! It is recognized by other artists and respected by all.

This is of course due in large part to Jean-Philippe and Tom.” She cites that “their strength has been in their unique ability to perceive and design a repertoire that entertains all parts, whether it’s the audience or the dancer.” Tom and Jean-Philippe have “greatly succeeded” in realizing her dreams for the company, she says. “I am thankful that I had the dream and was lucky and persistent enough to convince JP and Tom to relocate from New York City. Never did I imagine that one day the company would be performing nationally and internationally and never did I imagine that one day they would be performing works by internationally famous choreographers. Although I had the dream, I never imagined so much. I feel very lucky.”

Jean-Philippe Malaty, Executive Director, was born in the Basque region of France. After receiving his baccalaureate in dance, he accepted scholarships to study at Mudra, Maurice Béjart’s school in Brussels, and at John Cranko’s ballet academy in Stuttgart.

Invited by acclaimed instructor David Howard to study in New York, Jean-Philippe traveled to America under Howard’s tutelage.

Jean-Philippe’s performance career began with Joffrey II. He also danced as a guest artist with Los Angeles Classical Ballet, Ballet Hispanico, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Jean-Philippe segued from the stage to an administrator role while still in his twenties.

A key member of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s start-up team, JeanPhilippe has been central to developing the company’s unique dual-city-based hybrid business model. He directs operations in two locations, overseeing a $4 million budget that he allocates to the company, two schools, an esteemed presenting series, and an award-winning folkloric outreach program. Jean-Philippe’s first love is teaching, and, when his schedule permits, he conducts master classes at schools and universities. In 2013, JeanPhilippe shared an honor with Artistic Director Tom Mossbrucker when the Santa Fe Community Foundation bestowed its Piñon Award on the company. In 2012, the Denver Bonfils-Stanton Foundation granted Jean-Philippe a Livingston Fellowship in recognition of his significant leadership role in Colorado’s nonprofit sector. In 2010, in recognition of ASFB’s contribution to the field of dance, Jean-Philippe and Tom were honored with the

—Jean-Philippe Malaty Tom Mossbrucker, Artistic Director, has been artistic director of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet since 1996. For the past seventeen years, Tom has built a prestigious arts organization sharing two homes in Aspen and Santa Fe. In his role as artistic director, Tom cultivates highly sophisticated and challenging works of contemporary ballet. His shining achievement is ASFB’s roster of 27 ballets created on commission by leading global choreographers. Tom began to dance at age four, studying tap in his hometown of Tacoma, Washington. He pursued classical ballet training at the School of American Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet School. His twenty years as a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, performing in over 70 ballets under the direct coaching of founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, coincided with a period of high artistic achievement for the company. Tom danced in ballets by great twentieth century choreographers: Fredrick Ashton, George Balanchine, Laura Dean, William Forsythe, Jiˇrí Kylián, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, and Twyla Tharp. Signature roles included Iago in Jose Limon’s The Moor’s Pavane, Champion Roper in Agnes DeMille’s Rodeo, Billy in Eugene Loring’s Billy the Kid, and Romeo in John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet. This rich dance background Tom brings to coaching dancers today. In 2013, Tom shard and honor with Executive Director Jean-Philippe Malaty when the Santa Fe Community Foundation bestowed its Piñon Award on the company. In 2010, in recognition of ASFB’s contribution to the field of dance, Tom and Jean-Philippe Malaty were honored with the Joyce Theater Foundation Award. A former board member of Dance USA, Tom currently serves on the board of The Gerald Arpino and Robert Joffrey Foundation.

DANCERS Corwin Barnette, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s newest member, joined the company upon graduating from The Julliard School in June, 2014.

Born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, Corey returns to the Southwest to dance with ASFB. At Juilliard, he was fortunate to dance in pieces

by Pina Bausch, Martha Graham, Alexander Ekman, and William Forsythe. Corey got a well-rounded start in dance studying jazz, tap, and acrobatics. “I grew up with dance since I was three, so I am very familiar with dancing every day. But to be able to dance for a living, to be supported financially and artistically as we are at ASFB, is a dream come true.”

Craig Black is in his fourth season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. The California native was captain of his San Jose high school’s nationally ranked dance team. Craig received his BFA from The Juilliard School, where he was awarded the 2010 Princess Grace Award in Dance.

He won the 2011 Lorna Strassler Award for Student Excellence at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Craig’s summer programs were at Springboard Danse Montreal, Nederlands Dans Theater, and the Pillow. “We are all super involved. We all love what we do. At first, a new piece is overwhelming. I love the challenge in that. It gives me the push I need to step it up to the next level.”

Katherine Bolaños, a native of Oklahoma City, is in her eleventh season with ASFB. Katherine began her professional career with Ballet Oklahoma where she remained for seven years performing mostly classical roles. As a guest artist with the Los Angeles Ballet Ensemble, she toured extensively in Taiwan and China. “I love the partnering in contemporary work and moving in a way that’s very slow, expressive, and creature-like. I enjoy rehearsing in the studio as much as performing on stage. The studio gives the freedom to grow artistically. On stage I feel like I’m in a different world.”

Sadie Brown, now in her second season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, began to dance in her hometown of Evansville, Indiana. She also studied at the Boston Ballet School, The Harid Conservatory, and the Walton School for Girls in Grantham, England. Sadie performed for three seasons with the Grand Rapids Ballet and as a guest artist with Evansville Dance Theater, Evansville Ballet, and Michigan Classic Ballet. Her guesting with Ballet Bratislava took her to Slovakia and Austria. “The dancers have been extremely welcoming and it’s a wonderful work environment. Some days it feels like you aren’t even coming to work; you’re just showing up with a group of people who love to dance.”

Paul Busch is in his fourth season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet.

Born in Romania, Paul got his start as a professional dancer with Dayton Ballet. He received his high school diploma from Interlochen Arts Academy and his BFA in dance from The Juilliard School. Paul’s musical background led him to dance. “As a pianist, I studied the Suzuki method. Listening to music, I started to move and fell in love with dance. Now that I’m a dancer, I could never go back to just playing piano. I see myself as a musician who dances.”

ABOUT THE COMPANY (continued) Samantha Klanac Campanile enjoys the honor of being the company’s most longstanding member, now in her fourteenth season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. Samantha has originated roles in creations by Jorma Elo, Nicolo Fonte, and Cayetano Soto. Growing up in Buffalo, she trained at the American Academy of Ballet, The Chautauqua Institute, NYSSA, and the School of American Ballet.

She began her college education at SUNY Purchase, but earned her BA in the arts from SUNY Empire State College. “The beauty of dance is that the challenge is always there. We’re always learning, and no two performances are alike. The company has evolved in many wonderful ways while I’ve been here. I feel lucky to be a part of it.”

Peter Franc is in his third season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. Peter first studied Maniya Barredo at Atlanta’s Metropolitan Ballet Theatre.

After high-school training at the Louisville Ballet School, he moved to the Houston Ballet Academy, eventually joining the Houston Ballet for seven years. At Houston Ballet, Peter reached the rank of demi-soloist performing in works by George Balanchine, Christopher Bruce, Jerome Robbins, Stanton Welch, and Christopher Wheeldon.

“I like the demand dance puts on my body—finding a coordination it never found before. The feeling that I’m at my limit gives me a high.

I’m pushed by the good competition here. Everyone is really gifted.”

Nolan DeMarco McGahan, a Dallas native, has been an Aspen Santa Fe Ballet dancer for eight seasons. Nolan trained at Ballet Academy of Texas and then with Fernando Bujones at the Orlando Ballet School. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing and Visual Arts, Nolan attended summer programs with Ballet Austin, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Boston Ballet. He earned his BFA in dance from The Juilliard School. “I’ve had amazing opportunities at ASFB. I got to work with the original group—Seth, Sam and Katie. It shaped me as a young dancer. I learned from their maturity, professionalism, and real artistry.”

Emily Proctor, a graduate of The Juilliard School, is marking her eighth season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. A native of Raleigh, Emily trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Prior to joining ASFB, she had the opportunity to tour with Hell’s Kitchen Dance in Aszure Barton’s Come In, which starred Mikhail Baryshnikov. Emily was selected as one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2010.

“I had career-saving foot surgery that went well. I’m so grateful to be back doing what I love, which gives my life a wonderful sense of purpose.”

Seia Rassenti danced with Flamenco Y Mas as a youngster in Arizona then trained in classical ballet with Linda Walker at the Tucson Regional Ballet. After graduating from the Kirov Academy of Ballet

in Washington, DC, she danced with North Carolina Dance Theater where she worked with Dwight Rhoden. Seia is in her sixth season with ASFB. “I feel most comfortable in the contemporary mode. I trained classically because I knew it would help me become a better dancer. But I really love the freedom and personal expression of the work we do here. I found my niche.”

Joseph Watson, now in his sixth season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, began formal dance training at TWIGS (To Work In Gaining Skills), a respected after-school program in his home town of Baltimore. After graduating from the Baltimore School for the Arts, Joseph attended The Juilliard School, earning his BFA in dance.

He was a member of North Carolina Dance Theatre prior to joining ASFB. “I try not to overthink a performance. I just tell myself that I’m about to go on stage to do what I love. I love the zen feeling I get when I’m out there.”

CHOREOGRAPHERS Nicolo Fonte has created over 40 new works for dance companies spanning the globe, garnering praise and generating excitement for his daring and theatrical approach to dance. The Australian Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, and The Dutch National Ballet, among many others, all have works of his in their repertoire. Whether made to Ravel’s brash Bolero or the quiet intricacy of a Bach violin piece, Fonte ballets have common ground: “The choreography is inventive, creating expressive original shapes built on an undercurrent of implicit human relationships” (Foyer/Dance Europe). “What impresses the most is that his choreography is obviously the result of a personal reflexion—distinctly and unmistakably Fonte, proof of a rare quality” (Michel Odin/Danse). As a member of Nacho Duato’s Compañia Nacional de Danza in Madrid, Fonte forged a strong identity in the Spanish company for seven years, for both his dancing and his choreography. En los Segundos Ocultos (In Hidden Seconds), one of three ballets Fonte created for the company, was hailed as a breakthrough work of great impact with the poetic vision of a mature artist and indeed this ballet established his presence on the international dance scene. From 2003 to 2006, Mr. Fonte enjoyed a creative partnership with The Göteborg Ballet in Sweden, helping to establish the company’s distinct profile. There, he created his first full-length ballet, Re: Tchaikovsky, which appeared on the “Best of 2005” lists of both Ballett International and Dance Europe. Fonte has also played an important role in the ongoing development of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet as one of that company’s most popular guest choreographers. To date, he has created eight highly successful works for ASFB. Mr. Fonte is currently Resident Choreographer for Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah.

ABOUT THE COMPANY (continued) Jiˇrí Kylián, hailed as one of the world’s foremost living choreographers, was born in Prague and studied at the city’s Conservatory and London’s Royal Ballet School before joining the Stuttgart Ballet (Germany) under John Cranko in 1968. In 1973, he was invited by the Nederlands Dans Theater in Den Haag as a guest choreographer. By 1975, he was appointed the company’s Artistic Director. Jiˇrí achieved his international breakthrough with Sinfonietta in 1978, set to music composed by his compatriot Leoš Janáˇcek. His international reputation kept growing with such works as Symphony of Psalms (1978), Forgotten Land (1981), Svadebka (1982), Stamping Ground (1983), and L’Enfant et les Sortilèges (1984). Apart from developing choreographic works, Kylián has also built up a unique organizational structure for and within the Nederlands Dans Theater, adding two new dimensions to the Dutch ballet company. The world-famous Nederlands Dans Theater I has been expanded by Nederlands Dans Theater II (‘The Young and Dynamic Company’ of dancers between the age of 17 and 22) and Nederlands Dans Theater III (dancers/performers beyond the age of 40)—each company with a distinctively individual repertoire. In April 1995, Jiˇrí Kylián celebrated 20 years directing the Nederlands Dans Theater by mounting the large-scale dance production Arcimboldo, which involved all the dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater I, II, and III. On that occasion, he received one of the Netherlands’ highest honors, becoming Officier in de Orde van Oranje Nassau. As of August 1999, Jiˇrí Kylián retired from the position of the Artistic Director of Nederlands Dans Theater. However, with respect to the future development of the company, he maintains the essential roles as a resident choreographer.

Cayetano Soto was born in Spain in 1975. He started his dance education in his hometown of Barcelona at the Institut del Teatre and continued his studies at the Koninklijk Consevatorium in The Hague.

After receiving his degree in Classical Dance, Cayetano Soto, signed his first professional contract with IT.Dansa in Barcelona before joining the Ballet Theater Munich a year later in 1998, under the artistic direction of Mr. Philip Taylor. For Ballet Theater Munich, he created

several successful ballets and one of his first signature pieces, FUGAZ. In September 2005, he became a freelance choreographer.

Since then, the most important collaborations were with the following international companies; Stuttgarter Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Balé da Cidade de Sao Paulo, BJM Montreal, Introdans, Introdans voor de Jeugd, Gauthier Dance Company, Companhia Nacional de Bailado, Perm Opera and Ballet Theater, Návodní Divadlo Brno, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Tanz Luzern Theater, and Northwest Dance Project in Portland. He created several ballets as well in German companies including; Staatstheater Braunschweig, Augsburg Ballett, Ballett in Revier, Ballett Dortmund, and Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin. In Schwerin, together with choreographer Annet Göhre, he created his first full evening Ballet, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT´S DREAM, in 2006. From 2009, he began a continuous collaboration with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and Introdans Ensemble voor de jeugd, where he produced new ballets for the companies.

For Ballet Dortmund in 2009, he created a new full evening version of CARMEN. Due to the success in Dortmund, Národní Divadlo Brno in Czech Republic decided to stage his CARMEN in 2010. Besides these works, he choreographed for four dancers in the Church of St. Egidean in Nürnberg, Dancing Mozart´s mass in C-minor with life orchestra. Fascinated by the fashion label Talbot Runhof, he started to collaborate with the designers in several projects. Talbot Runhof designed the costumes of CARMEN for Dortmund Ballet and Soto choreographed a new solo to present their new collection at the Fashion week in Paris. The costumes of the new creation SORTIJAS for Ballet Hispanico of New York will be also designed by the German American duo. The 2006 choreogrwaphic competition of the Royal Ballet of Flanders, uncontainable project, awarded Soto with the first prize for his ballet 24FPS. CANELA FINA commissioned

by Bale da Cidade de Sao Paulo was awarded by the most important newspaper of Brasil, Folha de Sao Paulo, by audience and critics as best dance production of the year 2008. In 2011, he was nominated for the Golden Mask Award in Russia for his Choreography UNEVEN. Cayetano Soto is based in Munich.

Newman Center Executive Director Stephen Seifert serves on the Board of Directors of the Western Arts Alliance. WAA is a membership association of touring and performing arts professionals engaged in presenting the performing arts throughout the western states and Canadian provinces. Serving members since 1967, WAA’s annual conference brings together over 1,000 artists, artist managers, presenters, leaders of arts service organizations, and administrators of state arts agencies. At the conference, members work together on artist tours for upcoming seasons and engage in professional development for arts leaders.
