At Your Service The House Manager is responsible for the overall front-of-house operation. Ushers (dressed in white and black with green scarves/ ties) can direct patrons who have questions or concerns to the House Manager.

Late arrivals will be seated at a suitable break in the performance, and at the discretion of the house manager and/or artist. Late seating may not be possible in some cases. In consideration of all theater-goers, please arrive in plenty of time for the scheduled curtain.

Cameras and recording devices are not allowed in the theater. The taking of photos during a performance may violate our contract with the performers and producers. In addition it can distract performers and negatively affect their safety and the show. Pre- and post-show photography also is not permitted. Cell phones and any other electronic devices may not be used in the theater. The use of a laser pointer at any time by any patron subjects that patron to expulsion from the theater without a ticket refund.

Smoking

Children are welcome in our theater, but bringing infants to a performance is highly discouraged, as they can become a distraction to performers and other audience members. Each individual must be ticketed to enter the theater and no babes-in-arms will be permitted without a ticket.

The Arts Center may deny entry to any person accompanied by another who may become a disruption to the performers or audience, and may likewise remove disruptive patrons from the audience. Occasionally, individual productions may have recommended age limits. Refunds are at the discretion of the Lone Tree Arts Center Box Office.

The Lone Tree Arts Center is a smoke-free facility. Smoking e-cigarettes is not permitted inside the building.

Parking The Lone Tree Arts Center has a large, free on-site parking lot as well as a convenient drop-off point at the front entry. The parking lot can be found on the south side of the building. Patrons are also permitted to park across Sky Ridge Avenue in the Target parking lot.

Hearing Assistance The Lone Tree Arts Center has installed an inductive hearing loop. The loop system broadcasts directly into hearing aids that are equipped with a T-coil switch (tele-coil or telephone switch). For hearing aids with a T-coil switch, simply turn that switch and sound is broadcast directly to the hearing aid. For hearing aids without a T-coil switch, wireless headset receivers are also available free of charge at the Box Office.

AUGUST WILSON’S AUGUST WILSON All About

August Wilson, who wrote our upcoming production of Fences, is one of the most revered contemporary playwrights, and for good reason. His groundbreaking American Century Cycle encompasses ten plays chronicling the African-American experience in the 20th century, each set in a different decade. Two won Pulitzer Prizes for Drama, including Fences. The entire American Century Cycle has been produced only a handful of times, including at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, directed by the late Israel Hicks.

Wilson used his childhood in Pittsburgh as the basis for his writing. During the early part of his childhood, Wilson lived in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, an economically depressed neighborhood. When his mother divorced his father and remarried, Wilson moved to a predominantly white workingclass neighborhood where he experienced bouts of racism that would later inform his work. Wilson cofounded Black Horizons Theatre in Pittsburgh in the late 1960s; he began to direct plays there despite not having any directorial experience. While his early writing focused on poetry, he didn’t begin to work on playwrighting until he moved to Minnesota in the late ‘70s; he wrote his first play, Jitney, in 1979.

During the 1980s, Lloyd Richards, the artistic director of Yale Repertory Theatre, recognized Wilson’s talent, and he helped Wilson nurture and refine the plays in the American Century Cycle. In 1987, Fences was produced on Broadway, earning Wilson a Tony Award and his first Pulitzer Prize. Three years later, The Piano Lesson earned him his second Pulitzer.

Wilson had a clear vision about how his work should be produced. He famously refused to give the rights to make Fences into a film unless a black director was chosen; he believed that because the film was written from the African-American perspective, a white person would not be able to accurately reflect its intent. It took nearly thirty years for Fences to be filmed, with Denzel Washington directing and starring; the film earned numerous awards and received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay. Wilson’s estate continues to be strict in its allowance of the rights to his plays, with a rigorous request process.

Along the same lines, Wilson ignited an industry-wide controversy when he said that he believed “colorblind” casting in the theatre was nonsense, because plays written for white actors focused on the

AUGUST WILSON’S white experience, and plays written for African-American actors were written for the black experience. While Wilson didn’t live to see the Academy Award-winning version of Fences¸ nor any of the Tony Award-winning revivals of his plays on Broadway, his eloquent, lyrical plays have taken their place in the pantheon of great American writing.

Perhaps playwright Tony Kushner summed up Wilson’s importance the best when, upon Wilson’s death, he said, “The playwright’s voice in American culture is perceived as having been usurped by television and film, but he reasserted the power of drama to describe large social forces, to explore the meaning of an entire people’s experience in American history.

For all the magic in his plays, he was writing in the grand tradition of Eugene O’Neill and Arthur Miller, the politically engaged, direct, social realist drama. He was reclaiming ground for the theater that most people thought had been abandoned.”

Grammy Award Winners

SFJAZZ COLLECTIVE Seeing the SFJAZZ Collective perform is the chance to see masters at work, on a few levels. First, the members are contemporary jazz super-stars in their own right, with multiple Grammy awards and nominations.

Combined, they form a supergroup, the likes of which are rarely seen. The icing on the cake? In addition to performing their own compositions, they also honor a jazz master, with new arrangements of familiar pieces.

When the SFJAZZ Collective performs in Lone Tree this April, they will be honoring the one and only Miles Davis—the king of cool. Davis transformed the world of jazz in the late 40s/early 50s with his album Birth of Cool, which was the start of experimentation and the development

of new kinds of jazz music. The SFJAZZ Collective explores Davis’ music with new interpretations of his most famous compositions, including “So What,” “Tutu,” “Milestones,” and “Bitches Brew.”

In addition, we’ll hear new compositions by members of the SFJAZZ Collective inspired by Davis, including pieces by alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, trombonist Robin Eubanks, and tenor saxophonist David Sanchez.

ESAU PRITCHETT (Troy Maxson) is originally from Saginaw, MI and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts/Theatre from Oakland University in Rochester, MI in 1998. He has worked in many regional theatres across the country over the past 15 years. His theatre credits include many Shakespeare productions, as well as contemporary plays, and recently he played the title role in August Wilson’s King Hedley II. He has been featured on the long-running crime dramas Law and Order, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, and Law and Order: SVU. He is also featured in HBO’s crime drama The Night Of and has made appearances on Netflix in the series Orange Is the New Black and Marvel’s Iron Fist. In 2017, Esau appeared as a guest star on NBC’s Chicago PD and appeared as a guest star on NBC’s The Blacklist in 2018.

LEONARD EARL HOWZE (Bono) is honored to be making his Lone Tree Arts Center debut with a production of Fences by August Wilson, a playwright whose works illuminate the complexities of the African American experience. Mr. Howze is currently starring as the character Goody opposite Kevin James on the CBS comedy Kevin Can Wait. His film credits include Brave New Jersey, True Memoirs of an International Assassin (both of which are currently available on Netflix), Barbershop and Barbershop two, Antwone Fisher, Lone Ranger, and

several other notable films. Other T.V. credits include Memphis Beat, NCIS, and Showtime’s Shameless, along with many other appearances. Regional theater credits include What We Don’t Say at Pasadena Playhouse Black Box Theater, and Salvage at the Elephant Theater. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Purchase College.

DARRYL ALAN REED (Gabriel), born in Chicago, is elated to return to perform in the Denver area, having appeared in the Denver Center Production of August Wilson’s Radio Golf, directed

by Israel Hicks. Mr. Reed has had the opportunity to grace many wonderful stages throughout this country, including Chicago’s Goodman and Steppenwolf theaters, the Cleveland Playhouse, Baltimore’s Center Stage, Dallas Theatre Center, the Arena Stage in D.C., and L.A.’s Geffen Theater. Mr. Reed has many credits in film, television, radio, and commercials, but prefers the challenge and gratification of the stage. He is especially grateful to be making his inaugural performance here in Lone Tree at this phenomenal venue.

JAY REEVES (Cory) is a Newark, New Jersey born actor.

He spent his formative years excelling in sports.

His interest in sports ranged from baseball to rugby. In high school, Jay’s team went on to win the Los Angeles City Football Championship! Even at an early age, Jay expressed a keen interest in the arts. His love and passion for the arts were fanned and supported by his family. Jay committed hours sketching, acting, and developing his skills. His interests today range from rap to the

theatre. As his commitment to the arts continues to evolve, he will always welcome and seize opportunities to grow.

NYLAH LANGFORD (Raynell) is in seventh grade and her favorite subject is Language Arts.

Nylah has been afforded the opportunity to perform in various church choirs and school theatre productions as follows: Press Start! (Speedy The Hedgehog), The Final Dress Rehearsal (Director), and The Nativity Story (Mary, Mother of Jesus).

This February, Betty appeared as Mayme in Intimate Apparel at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Colorado credits include the Arvada Center (The Mountaintop), the Aurora Fox (Once on this Island), Curious Theatre (Good People), Stories on Stage, and Local Theatre, among others. In 2016, she was nominated for a Henry award for outstanding lead actress in The Mountaintop at the Arvada Center. This year, Betty directed Lady Day at the Emerson Bar and Grill for Vintage Theatre and Denver Center’s Garner Galleria Theatre (now showing on Mondays through April 23). Next up, Betty will be appearing in The Catamount’s original immersive dance piece, Rausch, and you can see her this summer in Richard III (Queen Elizabeth), You Can’t Take It With You (Mrs. Kirby), and in Edward III (Artois) at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

GREGORY TUCKER (u/s Lyons, Cory) is just recently back involved with theatre after a lengthy hiatus from the medium.

Being involved in this production with its cast and crew has been a wonderful reunion in getting back to the theatre. His ability to be a part of this fantastic show is very much dependent on a robust and sizable support base.

WREN T. BROWN (Director) is a fourth-generation Angeleno and is very proud to be in his fourth decade as an actor, and entering his second decade as a producer and director. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Wren is descended from a long line of talented performers. His maternal greatgrandfather, all four of his grandparents, and his father were professional performing artists.

Among Wren’s film appearances are: Beyond the Lights, Waiting to Exhale, Heart and Souls, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Hollywood Shuffle, Biker Boyz, The Importance of Being Earnest, and David Mamet’s Edmond.

On television, Wren co-starred as Whoopi Goldberg’s brother and comic foil in NBC’s Whoopi and was a regular in Flipper: The New Adventures, as well as CBS’s Bless This House. He has guest starred or recurred on: The West Wing, The Practice, Touched by an Angel, Frasier, Seinfeld, Star Trek: Voyager, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Everybody Hates Chris, Half & Half, and as the voice of Virgil Simpson on The Simpsons. Most recently, Wren has been seen on Being Mary Jane, Grey’s Anatomy (recurring), Transparent, and Dear White People.

Some of his theatre credits include Shakespeare’s As You Like It (DramaLogue Award winner), On Borrowed Time, Burning Hope, and his NAACP Image Award-nominated performance in Jeffrey’s Plan.

Wren has appeared in over 100 commercials and a broad range of voiceover and spoken word projects. He narrated The History Channel’s U.S.S. Constellation: Battling For Freedom and the E! True Hollywood Story on the life of Diana Ross. He also voiced Disney’s Br’er Rabbit for various projects and can currently be heard narrating Laurence Fishburne’s Bronzeville.

Wren is thrilled to make his Lone Tree Arts Center directing debut with August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Fences. In his directorial debut, Wren directed over thirty-five actors in their performances in Inspired By . . . The Bible Experience, winner of the 2007 Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, in which he also narrated the book of Matthew. In 1999, Wren made his debut as a producer with the critically acclaimed feature film, Boesman & Lena, starring Danny Glover and Angela Bassett.

In 2007, Wren founded the awardwinning Ebony Repertory Theatre, the first, and only, African American professional theatre company in Los Angeles history, where he serves as its producing artistic director.

CANDY BROWN (Fight Choreographer) has worked extensively as an accomplished actress, choreographer, and director on stage, television, and film all around the country.

Since relocating to Denver nearly ten years ago, Ms. Brown has performed at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, Curious Theatre Company, Local Theatre Company, Telluride New Playwright Festival, Lone Tree Arts Center, and Stories On Stage. Locally, she has choreographed Big River at the Lone Tree Arts Center and directed and

choreographed Once On This Island for the Aurora Fox Theatre. She has also been teaching and choreographing for the Denver School of the Arts Theatre Department where she most recently choreographed The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which has been chosen to be on the Main Stage at the International High School Thespian Convention in June.

ROB COSTIGAN AND BOB BAUER (Properties) are proud to be a part of the design team for Fences. They are the owners and creative force behind PROPabilities. Their work was last seen in Something’s Afoot and Real Women Have Curves. Television credits include MTV’s Spring Break 2012 and 2011, Hip Hop Harry for Discovery Kids and TLC Channel, and Culture Clash for Fox TV. Ed is the proud father of twins, Denis and Wesly, and husband to Director Elizabeth Bell-Haynes.

MISTER EROCK (Stage Manager) is thrilled to be returning to the awardwinning Lone Tree Arts Center. A proud member of Actors’ Equity Association, previous stage management credits include Love Letters at Lone Tree Arts Center, Tantalus (directed by the late Sir Peter Hall), the Tony-nominated It Ain’t Nothin But the Blues, as well as Behind the Broken Words starring Anthony Zerbe and Roscoe Lee Browne. The highlight of his acting career thus far was terrifying children as the Ghost of Christmas Future in Laird Williamson’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol. JANICE BENNING LACEK (Costume Design) received her Master of Fine Arts at University of California, San Diego. Regional/national/international theatre highlights since 1987 include projects with La Jolla Playhouse,

where she designed the west coast premiere of Jose Rivera’s Marisol, A.C.T. in San Francisco, Syracuse Stage, the San Diego Repertory, the American University of Cairo, Egypt, Theatre Memphis, Opera Memphis, the Tennessee Shakespeare Company, and over 35 productions of the work of William Shakespeare with the Colorado, Utah, and Oregon Shakespeare Festivals. Former resident designer (and founding company member) of Denver’s Curious Theatre Company, 1999 -2009, Janice designed dozens of Curious productions—several regional/world premieres, including Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl and, most recently, 2017’s The Body of an American, and a new trilogy

by Merideth Friedman. Janice has taught costume and theatre production at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Kenyon College, and the University of Memphis.

She returned to the Front Range in 2016 to join the Denver University faculty. This is her first project with Lone Tree.

KARYN LAWRENCE (Lighting Design) is an award-winning lighting designer based in Los Angeles and is delighted to be making her debut for Lone Tree Arts Center! Karyn has earned two Los Angeles Ovation nominations for Best Lighting for Colony Collapse at The Theatre at Boston Court, and The Gospel at Colonus with Ebony Repertory Theatre. Her design for Fences with International City Theatre won an NAACP Theater Award for Best Lighting. Additional regional theater credits include Pasadena Playhouse, South Coast Repertory, East West Players, The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Arizona Broadway Theatre, The New Swan Shakespeare Festival, and Great River Shakespeare Festival. In addition to theater, she is one of Radiance Lightworks’ lead lighting designers for Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights. She currently teaches lighting design at California State University, Los

Angeles. Her work has also been seen in Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Romania.

DAN MCNEIL (Technical Consultant) and his wife Cathy own Black Birch Studio. Dan as a blacksmith and Cathy as a designer/artist, create and install commissioned private and public art pieces. After three decades as Technical Director at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Dan is now a full-time Artist Blacksmith and mentors young men and women in his workshop; using one’s hands in making things with wood and metal. Dan spent formative years training and working at the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts, Ithaca College, Yale University, and the Alaska Repertory Theatre. Dan lives near Golden, Colorado, with his wife while his three daughters are on their post-college journeys.

RANDY ST. PIERRE (Assistant Stage Manager) A member of Actor’s Equity Association, Randy is a veteran of Colorado theatre and happy to be back at Lone Tree Arts Center after performing the role of Bob Wallace in White Christmas and The Soldier in Home For The Holidays. Some of his Country Dinner Playhouse credits include Tommy in Brigadoon, The Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, Barrett in Titanic, and Reverend Shaw Moore in Footloose (Denver Post Ovation award). He has also performed at the Arvada Center as Father in the musical Violet (Denver Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor in a musical). DCTC credits include A Christmas Carol and Almost Heaven: Songs And Stories Of John Denver.

Favorite roles include Tony (West Side Story), Billy (Carousel), Erik (Phantom of the Opera), and Che (Evita). He has performed regionally at the Ascot Theatre, Heritage Square Music Hall, Wayside Inn Dinner Theatre, and the Crystal Palace in Aspen. Randy is also a member of the stage crew here at LTAC.

AUGUST WILSON (April 27, 1945-October 2, 2005) authored Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Piano Lesson, Seven Guitars, Fences, Two Trains Running, Jitney, King Hedley II, and Radio Golf. These works explore the heritage and experience of the descendants of Africans in North America, decade-by-decade, over the course of the twentieth century, forming the compilation entitled The American Century Cycle. His plays have been produced on Broadway, at regional theaters across the country and all over the world. In 2003, Mr. Wilson made his professional stage debut in his one-man show, How I Learned What I Learned, currently touring and featuring Eugene Lee reprising Mr. Wilson’s role. Mr. Wilson’s works garnered many awards including Pulitzer Prizes for Fences (1987) and for The Piano Lesson (1990); a Tony Award for Fences; Great Britain’s Olivier Award for Jitney; as well as seven New York Drama Critics Circle Awards for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, The Piano Lesson, Two Trains Running, Seven Guitars, and Jitney. Additionally, the cast recording of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received a 1985 Grammy Award, and Mr. Wilson received a 1995 Emmy Award nomination for his screenplay adaptation of The Piano Lesson. Mr. Wilson’s early works included the oneact plays The Janitor, Recycle, The Coldest Day of the Year, Malcolm X, The Homecoming, and the musical satire Black Bart and the Sacred Hills.

Mr. Wilson received many fellowships and awards, including the Rockefeller and Guggenheim Fellowships in Playwriting, the Whiting Writers Award, 2003 Heinz Award, was awarded a 1999 National Humanities Medal by President Bill Clinton, and received numerous honorary degrees from colleges and universities, as well as the only high school diploma ever issued by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

He was an alumnus of New Dramatists,

a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a 1995 inductee into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and on October 16, 2005, Broadway renamed the theater located at 245 West 52nd Street The August Wilson Theatre. Additionally, Mr. Wilson was posthumously inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2007. Mr. Wilson was born and raised in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and lived in Seattle, Washington at the time of his death. He is immediately survived by his two daughters, Sakina Ansari and Azula Carmen Wilson, and his wife, costume designer Constanza Romero.

MANDY GONZALEZ Straight from Broadway’s Hamilton, Mandy Gonzalez is returning to LTAC for a solo concert, after her appearance alongside Marcus Paul James, Robin de Jesús, and Adam Pascal in 2014’s concert Seasons of Broadway. Taking a break from starring as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, Mandy brings her show “Raise the Roof” to the Arts Center on Sunday, March 18.

Mandy and her powerhouse voice debuted on Broadway alongside the legendary Michael Crawford in Jim Steinman’s Dance of the Vampires, but the role that she is probably best known for is Nina Rosario in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights. She created the role in the original Broadway production and was with the company until January 2010. She’s also starred on Broadway in Wicked as Elphaba, where she brought down the house each night with “Defying Gravity.” She took over her current role of Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton
