hirty-five years ago, Opera Colorado raised the curtain on our very first season—a season that also featured La Bohème, with none other than tenor Plácido Domingo as our Rodolfo. Now, as we celebrate this milestone anniversary and welcome you to the start of the 2017-2018 season, it feels particularly appropriate to present another production of Puccini’s eternally beloved opera. Masterworks like La Bohème endure throughout the years because of their ability to continuously reveal universal truths. They meet us where we are—whether we’re in our teens or our twilight years, whether it’s our first viewing or our hundredth—and always find a way to connect with our own life experiences. In La Bohème we see heartfelt depictions of friendship, idealism, love and loss, all united by Puccini’s beautifully romantic score, and we can’t help but be moved by the humanity and realism. Something similar can be said of Steal a Pencil for Me, Opera Colorado’s second production of the season and the company’s second world premiere in just three years. Opening this January, Steal a Pencil for Me is based on the book by Jaap and Ina Polak, and their love that blossomed while both were held at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during the final year of World War II. Their remarkable true story, set to a score by Gerald Cohen and a libretto by Deborah Brevoort, is one not to miss.
Also not to miss: the sublime combination of Shakespeare and Verdi, when Opera Colorado closes the 2017-2018 season with Falstaff. It’s difficult to believe it’s been nearly three decades since we’ve mounted a production of this brilliant Verdi comedy, featuring the laugh-out-loud antics of the Bard’s famously corpulent knight. We’re thrilled to bring this opera back to Denver, and this time with all-new sets designed to evoke Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. In each of these three productions, you’ll also notice the presence of Opera Colorado’s 20172018 Young Artists. This group of rising talents now features seven singers along with a resident coachaccompanist, making it the largest class to date. Growing a robust Young Artists Program is part of Opera Colorado’s commitment to the future of this art form we all cherish, both through developing the future stars of the stage as well as touching the lives of more than 38,000 children and adults through our statewide Education and Community Programs, in which the Young Artists play an essential part. We hope you’ll agree 2017-2018 is a season worthy of an anniversary celebration—both on stage and off. It’s also a year, like every year, that owes its triumphs to you, our patrons. a Bohème may be the perfect opera. Audiences are reliably delighted to find it on the schedule, singers no less so, as the music flows favorably for the voice. It also stands as a sublime example of what the opera world calls “verismo”: believable stories about believable characters composed in a style that balances intimacy and excitement. For all those reasons, La Bohème has scarcely been off the stage since the moment of its premiere February 1, 1896, at Turin’s Teatro Regio. Three years earlier, to the exact day and venue, Puccini had his first triumph with Manon Lescaut; La Bohème proved him to be a talent for the ages. This adored opera arose from an ideal confluence of talents. Giacomo Puccini (1858 – 1924) had rejected his family’s roots in church music to try opera, in which endeavor he revealed a genius for giving musical voice to text and character. His partners for La Bohème were two specialists possessing complementary gifts for crafting opera librettos. Luigi Illica (1857 – 1919) was a master of dramatic structure, choosing and sequencing the right scenes to tell the story in a dramatically compelling fashion. In the case of La Bohème, this was especially vital, as its inspiration, Scènes de la vie

de bohème (Scenes of Bohemian Life) by Henri Murger (1822 – 1861), was too long and discontinuous to be set complete. Joining Puccini and Illica on the creative team was Giuseppe Giacosa (1847 – 1906), the wordsmith of the team. Illica might decide what Rodolfo, Mimi, and friends would be doing, but Giacosa determined what they would say, and Puccini set it all to music. At times, the creative process was fraught, as the composer had very clear ideas of what he wanted. Again and again, he demanded changes, especially of Giacosa. Some lines he rejected as “superfluous chattering.” At other times, he insisted upon having a few more phrases, even just a few more syllables, inserted into the text for the purpose of transition, or so that an important word – such as “esperanza” (hope) in Rodolfo’s first aria – would fall where he wanted the climax of the melody. The composer’s tinkering so infuriated his librettists that on several occasions the team nearly disintegrated. Puccini’s publisher Giulio Ricordi needed all his diplomatic abilities to preserve the troubled partnership, in part by refusing to let Giacosa resign. Central to the tale are two dramatically different couples, their
contrasting relationships vividly captured in Puccini’s music. Rodolfo and Mimi are all sweetness and light, Marcello and Musetto vinegar and sass. The former pair is characterized with flowing phrases and soaring high notes, their music as serene as their romance. As for the latter couple, Puccini gives them phrases of restless energy, suggesting impatience with one another, or at least with romance. Nowhere is this dichotomy more vivid than in the Act Three quartet. One couple is parting for the lady’s own good, the other because they can no longer bear each other’s presence. So convincingly has Puccini cast their music that even if one spared not a glance for the stage, there would be no doubt which music belonged to which. There are also Rodolfo and Marcello’s two friends. Schaunard and Colline lack romantic partners, but not personalities, and each has his musical spotlight. Schaunard’s is continually interrupted by
his buddies, more interested in the wine he has brought than in his tale of how it was acquired. However, the lilting rhythms Puccini has given him suggest that Schaunard is a fellow not prone to high drama. Colline’s aria comes very late in the opera, as he reflects upon the overcoat he is about to pawn so as to pay for a doctor for Mimi. The overcoat itself may not be profound, but that which it represents is fully worthy of the reflective, almost reverential music Puccini provides. Whether one attends for the music or the characters or both, when well-cast and well-produced, La Bohème is that rarest of operas: one suitable as a first opera for a novice or a renewed love for an aficionado. Few works can reliably satisfy both sides of that equation, but La Bohème can. If one has never attended an opera before, begin here. If one has seen La Bohème a dozen times, see it once more. It brings rewards for all.

The action occurs in the Latin Quarter of Paris. Act One: The poet Rodolfo and the painter Marcello share a garret apartment that on this Christmas Eve is even colder than usual. Burning Rodolfo’s play is their only source of warmth. Colline the philosopher joins them, followed by the musician Schaunard bearing food, wine, cigars and firewood. He regales his friends with tales of a brief though lucrative employment. The landlord Benoit arrives in search of rent, yet is sent away empty-handed when the Bohemians pretend to be scandalized by the old man’s social activities. Marcello, Schaunard and Colline depart for the Café Momus. Rodolfo remains behind to finish writing an article. A knock at the door reveals the seamstress Mimi whose candle has blown out. Her ill health and Rodolfo’s quick thinking combine to prolong her visit. The two young people tell each other of their lives. By the time they leave to join the others at Café Momus, they are deeply in love. Act Two: The streets of the Latin Quarter bustle with Christmas revelers. Rodolfo buys for Mimi a pretty bonnet. When they reach the Café Momus, he introduces her to his friends. The toy vendor Parpignol passes by, with crowds of children in two. A later arrival is even more flamboyant: Marcello’s former lover Musetta. Ignoring her wealthy new admirer Alcindoro, she taunts Marcello, but soon decides the younger man is the better choice. Alcindoro, sent off to buy a pair of shoes, returns to find that Musetta has departed with the Bohemians and both restaurant bills are his to pay.
Act Three: On a winter morning at a tavern, country women arrive for the market. Mimi, frail and weak, comes in search of Marcello, who is staying at the tavern with Musetta. She seeks advice as to how to deal with Rodolfo’s jealousy. Marcello suggests that they should emulate his own example of a freer love. Mimi hides as Rodolfo emerges from the tavern. She overhears as he relates to Marcello his fears for her health and his deep concern that his poverty will kill her. As Rodolfo realizes that Mimi is listening, Marcello, hearing Musetta’s laughter, reacts with jealous anger. The latter couple quarrels violently as the former couple bids a tender farewell. Act Four: Rodolfo and Marcello are back in their garret apartment, lamenting the loss of their lovers. The arrival of Schaunard and Colline offers brief diversion, but the frolic ends as Musetta bursts into the room. Mimi, she says, is below in the street, determined to see Rodolfo again but too weak to climb the stairs. The dying girl is brought into the apartment. Marcello and Musetta go to pawn her earrings so as to hire a doctor. Colline departs to sell his overcoat for the same purpose. Schaunard leaves the lovers alone to reminisce about their first meeting. Gradually, the other Bohemians return with money, medicine, a muff and a promise that the doctor will soon be there. Bloom’s 2017/18 season includes house debuts with Oper Köln, Opera Colorado and Israeli Opera, and role debuts as Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (English National Opera and Israeli Opera), Faraone in Rossini’s virtuosic Mosè in Egitto and Kaspar in Der Freischütz. He will also be returning to work with the Britten Sinfonia in Gerald Barry’s The Conquest of Ireland at the Barbican. Bloom will work with renowned conductors including Thomas Adès, Daniel Cohen, David Parry, Ari Pelto and Alexander Soddy. ROBERT CHARLOCK* Customhouse Officer New York native Bass, Robert Charlock is a recent graduate from Florida State University. In the Summer of 2017, Mr.Charlock made his debut as a Young Artist at Opera Steamboat where he performed the role of Melisso in Alcina. Other performances include being in the chorus for Opera Colorado’s production of Lucia di Lammermoor, Florida State University’s productions of The Rake’s Progress and Don Giovanni and the Opening Gala for Boulder Opera’s 2017 season. This upcoming season, Mr. Charlock returns to Opera Colorado to play the role of the Customs Officer in their production of La Bohème, and in the Spring will appear in the Boulder Symphony’s performance of La Traviata as The Commissioner. DOMINICK CHENES* | Rodolfo Recently reviewed in the Huffington Post as a “breakout star” and “powerhouse lyric tenor”, young tenor Dominick Chenes was recently heard as Don José in Carmen with Palm Beach Opera, Alfredo in La Traviata at the På Skäret Opera Festival, in Sweden, and Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera in his professional debut with

S. from The Academy in Philadelphia and Boston Lyric to San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Houston Grand Opera, St. Louis, Chicago’s Lyric Opera where he completed three years as an artist in the Ryan Opera Center, The Metropolitan Opera in NYC, Memphis, Nashville, Arizona Opera, Omaha, Minneapolis and internationally at Teatro Sucre in Quito, Ecuador as well as Komische Oper in Berlin. In addition to this production of La Bohème, his 2017-2018 season will include Inspector Kildare in Elizabeth Cree with Chicago Opera Theater, Alvaro in Florencia en el Amazonas with San Diego Opera and Madison Opera, and Ford in Falstaff with Intermountain Opera.
THE ARTISTS ANDREW HIERS*^ | Benoit Andrew Hiers earned his undergraduate degree from Florida State University where he studied with David Okerlund. He is a recent graduate of SUNY Binghamton. While pursuing his Master’s degree in opera, he had the opportunity to perform several roles with Tri-Cities Opera. Prior to his graduate studies, he performed with several companies in New York City including Loft Opera, Venture Opera, and Dell’Arte Opera Ensemble. This past summer he was a participant of the Merola Opera Program. As an Opera Colorado Young Artists this season, Andrew will sing the roles of Dulcamara in The Elixir of Love and Don Magnifico in Cinderella, the company’s touring productions. In addition to this mainstage production, he will sing an SS Guard in the World Premiere of Steal A Pencil for Me and sing the role of Pistola and cover the role of Falstaff in Falstaff, which he will sing for the Student Matinee. LUCAS KRECH | Lighting Designer A multi-media artist working in light, video projection and code—Lucas’ Opera Colorado designs include Madama Butterfly, Aida, Lucia di Lammermoor, and next year’s Falstaff. Other opera work includes shows at San Diego Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Opera Santa Barbara, West Edge Opera, West Bay Opera, First Look Sonoma, Madam Whitesnake Productions, Yale Arts & Ideas Festival, and others. Theater credits span Off-Broadway & regional theater having garnered several awards. Lucas’ dance work has been seen in over 42 US States and across Europe. During his studies, Nicholas had the opportunity to perform a great variety of roles for MSU Opera Theatre. These include Colline in La Bohème, Guglielmo in Cosi fan
tutte, George Emerson in A Room With a View, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, and Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro. Nicholas also performed the role of Chou Hu in The Savage Land at the Peking National Opera House in Beijing, China. During the summer of 2017, Nicholas attended Bel Canto at Caramoor as an apprentice artist. As an Opera Colorado Young Artist this season he will perform the role of Dandini in the touring production of Cinderella. In addition to this role, he is covering the role of Schaunard in La Bohème. He will also perform in Steal a Pencil for Me and Falstaff. HEATH MARTIN*^ | Alcindoro Heath Martin obtained his BM from Sam Houston State University and his MM in vocal performance from the University of Houston. Professional performance experience includes the role of Ernie in It’s a Wonderful Life with Houston Grand Opera, Baron Douphol in La Traviata with Chautauqua Opera, Gasparo in Rita with Lone Star Lyric Festival, Dr. Gregg in Gallantry with Alamo City Opera and Slook in La cambiale di matrimonio with Operativo Houston. His college performances include Papageno in The Magic Flute, Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro and Gianni Schicchi in Gianni Schicchi among others. ANYA MATANOVIC* | Mimi Praised for her “thrilling vocal color” and “sweetly winning” presence, American soprano Anya Matanovicˆ made her international opera debut as Musetta in Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème with the New Israeli Opera. The 2016-2017 season began with a return to Seattle Opera, as Gretel, Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress with Boston Lyric Opera, and Mabel in Pirates of Penzance with Lyric Opera of Kansas City. She also appeared in concert with the Cleveland Orchestra and Cincinnati Symphony for Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Anya was a member of the Seattle Opera Young Artist Program and the Apprentice Singers program at the Santa Fe Opera. She made her professional opera debut, directly from her undergraduate studies at USC’s Thornton School of Music, as Mimi in the Los Angeles run of Baz Luhrmann’s Tony Award-winning production of La Bohème.

THE ARTISTS SAHAR NOURI Chorus Master & Repetiteur Iranian pianist and conductor, Sahar Nouri, has been a member of the music staff at Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, Opera Colorado, Opera North Carolina, Glimmerglass Festival, Opera in the Heights, Utah Opera, Aspen Opera Theatre, Opera Steam Boat, and Merola Opera. This season, Ms. Nouri returns to Opera Colorado for the productions of La bohème and Steal a Pencil for Me. Her first collaboration with the company was Puccini’s La fanciulla del west in 2016. Ms. Nouri worked extensively with Houston Grand Opera where she was a member of the prestigious HGO Studio. At HGO, she worked on the world premieres of Prince of Players (Carlisle Floyd), O Columbia! (Gregory Spears), and many classic operas including: Eugene Onegin, Rusalka, Così fan tutte, and Madama Butterfly. A multi-lingual, Ms. Nouri has done studies in the Czech Republic, Italy, and Austria, and is frequently in demand as a language coach.
ARI PELTO Opera Colorado Music Director and Conductor Widely known for performances which have been called poetic, earthy, vigorous and highly individual, Ari Pelto is in demand in opera houses and concert halls throughout the US. At the age of 24 Pelto was appointed Assistant Conductor at the Spoleto Festival and has gone on to conduct worldwide. International engagements include performances with Bochumer Philharmoniker and opera productions at New National Theatre of Tokyo and the Teatro Nacional Sucre in Quito, Ecuador. In 2004 he made his highly-praised debut with New York City Opera after which he became a regular, returning for productions of Madama Butterfly, La Bohème and Carmen. Recent successes include Eugene Onegin at Lyric Opera of Kansas City, upcoming he conducts Lucia de Lammermoor for Virginia Opera. Here in Denver, he has driven many acclaimed performances; in addition to this production of La Bohème, Pelto leads Steal a Pencil for Me and Falstaff in 2018.
MATTHEW OZAWA* | Director American Stage Director, Matthew Ozawa, has an international career spanning all artistic disciplines having worked for prestigious companies worldwide including Canadian Opera Company, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Opera Siam, Macau International Festival and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Additionally, Ozawa is the Founder and Artistic Director of Mozawa, a Chicago-based incubator advancing collaborative art and artists. Upcoming engagements include a new production of Il barbiere di Siviglia, and the World Premiere of An American Soldier for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. His most recent acclaimed productions include: A Little Night Music (Des Moines Metro Opera / Houston Grand Opera), Sweeney Todd (Skylight Music Theater), Celebrating Placido Domingo (Lyric Opera of Chicago), Madama Butterfly (Arizona Opera), Don Quichotte (Lyric Opera of Chicago), Romeo and Juliet (Minnesota Opera), Frankenstein (West Edge Opera), L’Opera Seria (American Premiere - Wolf Trap Opera), and After The Storm (World Premiere – Houston Grand Opera).
NATHAN WARD*^ | Parpignol Nathan Ward comes from an eclectic musical background, drawing on study of piano, cello and composition to inform his singing. He received his master’s degree at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music. Some of his roles there included Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah and Howard Boucher in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking. Other highlights include Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Chicago Summer Opera and Peter Quint in The Turn of the Screw with Chicago Fringe Opera. This summer he returned to Central City Opera as an apprentice, singing Remendado in Carmen. In addition to this role as an Opera Colorado Young Artist, Nathan will sing Rudi Acohen in the World Premiere of Steal A Pencil for Me and Bardolfo in Falstaff, as well as Fenton in the Student Matinee. He will also sing the roles of Nemorino in The Elixir of Love and Ramiro in Cinderella, the company’s touring productions.

THE ARTISTS MONICA YUNUS | Musetta Equally at home in concert, recital or on the operatic stage, Monica Yunus is quickly establishing herself as one of America’s most promising young sopranos. She has been called “especially winning” by The New York Times, and commended for her “rich and sensuous voice [that] was utterly captivating,” Ms. Yunus has performed on some of the world’s greatest stages including The Metropolitan Opera, where she is a frequent presence. Her roles include Norina in Don Pasquale, Adina in L’Elisir D’Amore, Alice in Le Comte Ory, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Gilda in Rigoletto, Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera among many others. IN MEMORIAM EDWARD (“ED”) SAINDON
Just before the start of production for La Bohème, Opera Colorado unexpectedly lost a valued member of our opera crew. Ed Saindon, Opera Colorado’s Head Carpenter since September 2016, suffered a fatal heart attack while doing what he loved best: working onstage. A Colorado native who grew up in Lakewood, Ed found himself at home in the world of technical theatre, completing his bachelor’s degree in Theatre Design and Technology at the University of Northern Colorado and his master’s degree in Technical Direction at Florida State University. Ed worked for many years in technical positions with various arts organizations including Virginia Opera, The Guthrie Theatre and Utah Shakespeare Festival Theatre, among others. Ed returned home to the Denver area in the summer of 2016 and joined Opera Colorado at the start of the 2016-2017 season. In addition to his work in theatre, Ed was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his parents, Darel and Joan Saindon, his sister Pamela and his brother Michael. Ed was a valued member of the Opera Colorado production staff, a constant positive presence backstage and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

OPERA COLORADO YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM
The Young Artists are at the core of our Education & Community Engagement Programs. Selected through a highly competitive audition process, these talented performers further their professional development by bringing opera to thousands of people in the Rocky Mountain Region.
GENERATION OC
Designed to develop 21st-Century Workforce Readiness Skills, this residency program allows students in grades 6-12 to explore careers in the arts. Students go behind the scenes of Opera Colorado while working in all aspects of the company including artistic, development, marketing and education and outreach.
OPERA IN A TRUNK
A steamer trunk filled with costumes, props and activities brings Opera Colorado to life! The program includes an interactive presentation and teacher study guide.
BACKSTAGE WORKSHOPS
Students experience the backstage magic of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House through handson stations and learn about design, costuming, special effects, professional opera singing and choreography.
OPERA ON TOUR
Often the first introduction an elementary or middle school student will have to opera, abridged operas are performed by the Young Artists for school and communities throughout Colorado that have limited access to professional cultural opportunities.
ARIAS AND ENSEMBLES
A program targeted to adults, the Young Artists perform repertoire ranging from operatic arias to selections from musical theatre and cabaret.
STUDENT MATINEE
The Young Artists perform a special matinee of Opera Colorado’s main-stage production at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House for students in the Denver Metro Area.
STUDENT DRESS REHEARSAL
Students in grades six and above attend a mainstage production dress rehearsal to experience a professional opera performance and a “night at the opera” in a relaxed and comfortable setting.
