Christmas in Mexico! Captures the Epic Scope of the Season
part of a much more extended observance, from the beginning of the season on Dec. 12 with the observance of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, to Jan. 6, the Day of the Epiphany, or “Día de los Reyes.” The “Christmas in Mexico” show captures that sense of grand scope in myriad ways. The Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar ensemble features a revolving group of up to 12 musicians playing the traditional combination of strings and brass under the leadership of Grammy Award-winning Artistic Director Jimmy Cuellar. The dance troupe Ballet Folklórico del Rio Grande is a 30-member ensemble composed of alums of the Collegiate Folklórico program at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Many may not associate the story of the Nativity with charro suits, sombreros, spirited dance moves and colorful piñatas.
Auditorium. Featuring Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar and Ballet Folklórico del Rio Grande, the performance captures the spirit of the complex, multifaceted “Navidad” season in Mexico.
Then again, for those familiar with Mexican celebrations surrounding the holiday season and, more specifically, the story of Joseph and Mary’s search for shelter on the night of their son’s birth, these elements will feel familiar. They’re part of long-held, beloved traditions of the season in the Mexican culture, rites that ring in the story of Christmas with joy, music, dance and movement.
“This vibrant show weaves cherished Mexican traditions into a magical story of the season,” writes Marian Liebowitz, spokeswoman for the “Christmas in Mexico” production. “Through the joyous rhythms of ‘Campana Sobre Campana’ (‘Bells Upon Bells’) and the colorful spectacle of Mexican dance, we capture the heartwarming re-enactment of Mary and Joseph’s journey.”
Boulder audiences will have the chance to experience those facets firsthand in 2026, as “Campana Sobre Campana: Christmas in Mexico!” runs at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 18 at Macky

The sheer number of performers gives the performance a grand scope and offers the proper amount of pomp and ceremony to the narrative threads of the show. Specifically, the music and dance highlight the tradition of the posadas, the celebration that typically takes place from Dec. 16 to 24. “Posada,” which translates to “inn” in Spanish, is an acknowledgment of Joseph and Mary’s search for shelter in Bethlehem. Along with vibrant tributes to the Reyes Magos, the breaking of piñatas and other rituals of the season, these elements capture the scope, majesty and joy of a season that’s much more than a single day in the Mexican tradition. Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar & Ballet Folklórico del Río Grande perform on the Artist Series at Macky Auditorium on Dec. 18, 2026.

Circa’s Art of Fugue Links Bach’s Musical Brilliance with the Human Form
By Adam Goldstein The Art of Fugue is Johann Sebastian Bach’s final, uncompleted masterpiece, a work that seeks to delve into every possible variation of a basic, straightforward musical formula. The piece was left unfinished at the time of Bach’s death in 1750. Since then, it has mystified, baffled and hypnotized musicians and music lovers alike. An exhaustive exploration of counterpoint and all of the musical variations of a simple D minor chord, The Art of Fugue has drawn admiration, speculation and attempts at completion for nearly 200 years. The Australian acrobatic group Circa has added its own take to the legendary work, specifically framing Bach’s masterpiece in terms of physical human movement, dynamism and form. Circa’s Art of Fugue performance, which runs at Macky Auditorium on Feb. 13, expresses Bach’s exhaustive, exploratory musical vision in a corporeal form. Members of the distinguished troupe use the 8

piece’s assembly of fugues and canons in D minor as a springboard for movement; just as the composer sought to explore all of the possibilities of a single musical concept, the members of Circa seek to fully push the bounds of a seemingly straightforward medium: the human body. The result is a performance that defies what audience members may see as the boundaries of human movement. Indeed, according to one English reviewer, at moments during the performance, “the bodies seemed as much like plasticine as flesh and blood.” This take on The Art of Fugue was created by South African-born director Yaron Lifschitz with Circa, and was based on the original production created with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and its artistic director, Paul Dyer. Lifschitz, whose direction credits include more than 80 pieces in the worlds of circus, opera, physical theater and large-scale productions, brings his experience and expertise to bear here—the physical exploration of Bach’s work feels like a feat, like a surreal spectacle that matches the unmatched

ambition of the composer’s original vision. And the show doesn’t sacrifice musical quality for its acrobatic flair. Bach’s music is brought to life by pianist Vitaly Starikov, the 2025 Cliburn Competition Silver Medalist, who treats the scores with as much attention to detail as the acrobats performing unreal feats of human expression.
NOV
Since its posthumous publishing in the late 18th century, The Art of Fugue has spurred myriad interpretations—some have suggested a religious interpretation of the work, while others have found links to the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Ratio in its precise, arcane patterns.
FEB
Circa’s interpretation takes a different spin, linking one of Bach’s most otherworldly works with the human form, in all its potential and possibility. This performance on the eve of Valentine’s Day proves that the expressions of the human body can be just as divine, inspiring and mystical as the greatest artistic works of master artists. Circa performs on the Artist Series at Macky Auditorium on Feb.13, 2027.

College of Music WELCOMES
Non-Music Majors
By Kathryn Bistodeau Did you know? The CU Boulder College of Music offers many opportunities for non-music majors to engage, perform and deepen their understanding of music.
Courses Any course with the prefix MUEL (music elective) is open to all students. Course titles include Introduction to Songwriting, Wild West Soundscapes, Music of the Rock Era, Making Electronic Music, Words and Music, Music and Global Health—and more. Additional courses without that prefix are crosslisted in other departments. For example, a Gendering K-pop course is available to non-majors by registering through the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations. 12
2026-27 Season
If you take enough music classes, or if you’re interested in more music instruction, explore our music minor comprising 19 credits of music classes, and requiring a basic music theory course and participation in at least one music ensemble. The college also offers a Certificate in Music Technology open to non-majors, and designed to provide a strong background in using technology to compose and produce music.
Ensembles “In addition to courses for non-majors, the college also offers several cross-genre and world music ensembles,” says Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies + Enrollment Management Matthew Roeder— from our American Roots String Ensemble offered in the fall, and a blues ensemble with brass and rhythm section in the spring, to our African highlife ensemble,
Join us for Japanese ensemble, Gamelan ensemble, Latin American ensemble and more. All music ensembles (EMUS) at the college are open to any CU Boulder student, though some may require an audition to participate. One of the largest ensembles open to non-majors is the college’s Golden Buffalo Marching Band (GBMB): More than 90% of the currently record-setting 270 members are non-music majors—and the GBMB represents nearly every school, college, student organization and major at CU Boulder. Additionally, the college offers a colloquium series, and many educational events and speakers throughout the academic year. “The College of Music is proud to offer multiple interdisciplinary offerings to students across the CU Boulder campus,” adds Roeder.

By Adam Goldstein The holidays are about celebration, music and connection, and those priorities have always been at the heart of CU Boulder’s Holiday Festival. The festival has been in place in some shape and form since 1945—and for that entire time, the performance has served as a way to celebrate music, musicians and the spirit of comradery that comes with the holidays. This year will be no different. If anything, the festival slated to run from Dec. 4 to 6 in Macky Auditorium will offer those elements in an even more pronounced way, as CU Director of Bands Shanti Simon takes the helm as director of the event. Simon, who joined the College of Music in 2025, has plenty of experience when it comes to creating 24
2026-27 Season
connections through music. Before coming to Boulder, she traveled the world as a part of the U.S. Air Force Band, a post that saw her leading musical performances for full honors funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as leading the band for the Air Force Central Command in locations including Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Egypt. All of this experience gave Simon a sense of the possibilities of music and performance. “Every day, music was able to open doors to conversations and connections between people,” she notes. Opening doors and creating connections will definitely be a feature of the Holiday Festival, a performance that features a combination of student ensembles, standout soloists and faculty musicians taking the stage for a program that offers a diverse musical tribute to the holidays.
In her first year leading the performance, Simon is eager to reimagine the possibilities as she looks to every element of the concert. In addition to the music itself, Simon is excited about drawing on the majesty and scale of Macky itself, seeing how the space can become a character in the performance. “I’m thinking about crafting seamless concert experiences through innovative audience engagement,” Simon says. “I want people to come to the concert hall and have something happen in the space that makes them want to come back. I’ve been exploring all kinds of things, from video to lighting to memorized performances where we take away chairs and stands.” What’s more, the Holiday Festival offers a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the College of Music’s core value of developing students as multiskilled, multifaceted universal musicians. During a time of year when celebrants from a range of cultures, faiths and traditions come together, the festival highlights the scope and power of music in our lives. The CU Boulder College of Music’s 2026 Holiday Festival runs Dec. 4 to 6 in Macky Auditorium.
