A MARSDEN

WELCOME... I thoroughly enjoyed my debut as Artistic Advisor with the Colorado Symphony during the successful holiday performances of Hansel and Gretel and Night in Vienna last year. And now, it is a pleasure to return to conduct something entirely different, the great masterwork where Verdi reached the apex of his genius, Requiem. The combination of gorgeous flowing melodies, brilliant dramatic pacing and perfect writing for the human voice makes this Requiem not only one of the greatest religious creations ever, but one of the finest and most powerful works in all of music. Any chance to perform it is a thrill, and these performances with the Colorado Symphony and Chorus in top form and a star lineup of soloists, will be unforgettable. Music has always been my life and there isn’t a day when I’m not grateful for being able to pursue my dream. The arts provide us with the ultimate form of self-expression and give us fulfillment, enrichment, beauty and peace, and represent, quite frankly, all that is best about mankind. I love the responsibility and challenge of taking a great musical composition and bringing it to life. Recreating the inspired thoughts of a composer in as true and honest a way as possible is my goal and one that I don’t take lightly. Thank you, patrons, for your support of the Colorado Symphony and for joining me and these talented musicians on this journey. Andrew Litton Artistic Advisor, Colorado Symphony

C.F. Kip Winger rehearses for Shuffle II, an exploration of his popular and classical music, at Boettcher Concert Hall.

ROCK OF AGES n the late 1980s, C.F. Kip Winger was known as a songwriter, a frontman and a heart-throb – the titular head of a New York City band that achieved international gold with its debut album, Winger. A bona-fide rock star, Winger was a regular featured equally on MTV, in the pages of teen and guitar magazines and on stages around the world, synonymous with the hair-metal movement that ruled rock-and-roll radio in the late 80s. Yet what he heard in his head when he sat down to write songs — whether at home, in the studio, or on a tour bus — were not screaming guitars blaring through Marshall stacks, but violins. “I’ve always been a classical composer in disguise,” says Winger. “When I wrote my rock music, all I’ve heard was classical music. I was self-taught, for the most part; I didn’t yet have the

skill to write and create it the way I always thought it should be. I came into composing in a completely backwards kind of way.” Winger began seriously studying symphonic music in 2001, and composed his first symphonic works a few years ago. In January, his music was the focus of a special installment of the Colorado Symphony’s Shuffle concert series. In addition to classical pieces and Winger’s own compositions, resident conductor Scott O’Neil led the orchestra through symphonic arrangements of some of Winger’s biggest hits — including “Headed for a Heartbreak” and “Rainbow in the Rose.” Sporting a suit and an electric guitar, Winger traded solos with his longtime bandmate Reb Beach — known in the hair-metal world as a giant of the axe. “Reb and I didn’t play anywhere near as loud as normally,” he says. “We felt really exposed. In rock, you can always hide behind the blaring

amps, so it was a good wake up to make sure I was on task. It was the first time I really heard the music the way I always thought it should be.” Winger is the latest in a long line of contemporary artists who have crossed the line separating classical music from rock and roll. As one of the most significant musical forms of the 20th century, rock and roll has been the soundtrack to the American experience for more than half a century, and its roots in symphonic music are deep. Melody, tempo and chords — the hallmarks of a good rock song — are forms first explored by classical composers.

MATT KORONA

Although the Beatles, quoting Chuck Berry, famously told Beethoven to “roll over” during their early days, John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote dozens of songs with classical influences, and their music is regularly performed by orchestras all over the world. Since the Beatles day, hundreds of rock acts have followed their example. “I can cite hundreds of riffs that I could instantaneously translate into strings,” says Winger. “Beethoven was a total rock star; that was the rock music of its day. You know, music is music any way you cut it. If any of the classical composers were around today they would be experimenting with electronic music.” Though the familiar names of Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms appear most commonly on orchestra programs, the Colorado Symphony has a long tradition of infusing contemporary elements into traditional styles. Sarah McLachlan, Guster, members of Chicago, the Airborne Toxic Event, Ozomatli, and Phish frontman Trey Anastasio, whose concert was an instant sell-out last February, are among the artists who’ve performed at Boettcher Concert Hall in recent years. The chance to hear the finest symphonic players engage with artists from the cultural front lines is exciting for audiences and players alike. “Any type of live music that is THE JAM-MAN COMETH: Trey Anastasio leads the Colorado Symphony through an evening of well constructed and performed at a Phish classics and solo works. high level with honesty and guts

deserves devoted, participating listeners,” says Catherine Beeson, the Colorado Symphony’s assistant principal viola player. A huge fan of Frank Zappa — “an undeniable genius and the most rock-and-roll composer” — Beeson studied jazz improvisation in college and once toured Europe with the alternative country band, the Silos. “As part of my training, I explored other styles and genres so that I could understand and enjoy operating my

instrument as comprehensively as possible,” says Beeson, whose cousin is a member of the Airborne Toxic Event. “I learned that rock and roll is a respectable art form unto itself, just as classical music is.” Looking ahead, Colorado Symphony audiences can expect even more fusion of the two worlds. This summer, the orchestra returns to Red Rocks Amphitheater for a rock-centric concert series, including Denver-based DeVotchKa with songwriter Amanda Palmer, formerly of the Dresden Dolls, on Friday, June 14. Rodrigo y Gabriela — the acoustic duo that considers Metallica to be as much of an influence on its guitar playing as traditional Mexican music, salsa and jazz — will headline with the orchestra on July 28. “We can’t think of a better way to introduce new listeners to symphonic music than with a fun, accessible summer concert at the world’s greatest venue,” says Anthony Pierce, Vice President of Artistic Administration for the Colorado Symphony. “It works in the other direction, too. By incorporating rock

artists into our regular season, some of our more traditional audience members will be exposed to artists they might not otherwise have a chance to appreciate. We’re excited about where these types of crossover collaborations might lead.” Pierce sees an encouraging model emerging in the ongoing creative groundbreaking collaboration between the Colorado Symphony and DeVotchka, who performed together at Red Rocks last September. A recording of the band’s first appearance with the orchestra, entitled DeVotchKa: Live with the Colorado Symphony, was chosen by many music critics as one of 2012’s best albums. “We’ve always had orchestra leanings,” says the band’s lead singer Nick Urata, who has described performing with the orchestra as the fulfillment of a life-long dream. “We wrote for more and more players with every album. When the chance to perform with an entire symphony came, we jumped at it.” Here’s hoping more artists — and audiences — will take the leap.

A HERO’S LIFE

Johannes Brahms b. May 7, 1833, Hamburg, Germany d April 3, 1897, Vienna, Austria

Returning to perform with the Colorado Symphony, violinist Augustin Hadelich has had a relationship with Brahms’ violin concerto since childhood.

Brahms composed his violin concerto in 1878, conducting its first performance on January 1, 1879 in Leipzig, with Joseph Joachim as soloist. Joachim and Brahms forged a friendship and a musical bond when both men were in their 20s, and — once Brahms overcame his intimidation by Beethoven — it was only natural that he would write a concerto for his friend. While it was panned at first, Brahms’ work was eventually admired – especially for its sunny finale – and widely performed. The orchestration calls for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoons; four horns; two trumpets; timpani; and strings.

“Since I was 8 or 9 years old, this piece has been with me. It’s one of the two or three greatest concertos ever written for violin, and I perform it more frequently than other concertos. “In this piece, Brahms was looking to Beethoven — just as all composers of the 19th century looked either to Beethoven or Mendelssohn as a model. “Generally speaking, concertos are basically symphonies with a solo instrumentalist. This concerto, in particular, is very symphonic — it’s more like playing chamber music, because

Duration: about 40 minutes. Last performed by the Colorado Symphony on October 24-26, 2008; Elina Vähälä, violin; Peter Oundjian, conductor.

it’s not as if the violin carries the main or most melodic themes all the time. In fact, sometimes I’m actually accompanying the orchestra, not the other way around. Like in chamber music, melodic lines are passed back and forth between the soloist and the orchestra, and the violin has to

blend with everything else that’s going on.

Richard Strauss b. June 11, 1864, Munich, Germany d. September 8, 1949, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

“The complexity and counterpoint of Brahms’ orchestration goes well beyond being a mere accompaniment to the soloist — and it just wouldn’t be Brahms if it was any other way. But that means the soloist and the orchestra really have to work

Composed in 1898, this six-part tone poem was conducted by Strauss himself at its premiere the next year, in Frankfurt. Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life) was a landmark for its time, exploiting the capacity of the modern orchestra. Its interconnected sections are each defined in sound and theme. The score calls for piccolo, three flutes, four oboes (including English horn), two clarinets, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, three bassoons, contrabassoon, eight horns, three trumpets (plus three offstage), two piccolo trumpets, three trombones, two tubas, timpani, percussion (bass drum, cymbals, small military drum, tenor drum, tam-tam and triangle), two harps and strings.

together to make everything connect. The important thing is that the conductor and orchestra know the piece, so we’re not starting from scratch when we rehearse. “One of the cues that Brahms took from Beethoven is the effect of high, shimmering sounds. There are several moments in the first and second movements that are really high and glorious. “And in the second movement, the main, beautiful theme is played by the oboist, and the violinist plays it in various forms. I think the audience in Denver will love that — it’s an incredible moment.”

Duration: about 50 minutes. Last performed by the Colorado Symphony on October 22-24, 2004; Christian Arming, conductor.
