A Life Shaped by Strings

Basil Vendryes | Principal Viola

By Nick Dobreff The viola’s voice isn’t one to shout; it doesn’t pierce or dazzle like the higher strings.

Instead, it breathes, reaching into the spaces in between, carrying a warmth that feels almost like the pull of memory. Basil Vendryes, longtime Principal Viola for the Colorado Symphony, has spent a lifetime drawing out this quiet intensity, shaping a sound that speaks directly to the heart. When he plays, it’s as if the music has always been there, just beneath the surface, waiting to be drawn out. For over 30 years, he’s woven this understated power into the fabric of the Colorado Symphony, impacting audiences in ways they might not fully understand — but can’t help feeling. This is his story, and it’s one that resonates with a depth only a viola can possess.

Born to West Indian parents in the vibrant heart of 1960’s New York City, Vendryes grew up in a lively household surrounded by family and a steady soundtrack of music that, while not central, wove itself subtly into the fabric of his early years.

“I was born in New York City in 1961 and come from a family of all girls, I have six sisters,” said Vendryes. “Music did not play a large element in my life at the beginning but there was often music playing in our house, so it was ever present in that way.”

“We moved to the Jamaica, West Indies in 1969 when I was eight years old. My father had gotten me a little electric organ for Christmas to learn to play and that was one of the few things that actually went to the island and came back to the states when we returned in 1971. While I didn’t take any lessons on it, I was very curious and tried to write music or make up songs on it.”

When he returned to the United States in the early 1970’s, he was introduced to instrumental music through the Public Schools of New York.

“I started out as a bass player in seventh grade, and I had a teacher who saw something in me, thought I had some talent and was kind enough to let me take home any instrument I wanted for the weekends. So, I would take home the cello, viola, and violin, and eventually kind of figured them all out; it was kind of like a language to me, so learning how to read different clefs and music came very naturally to me.”

Though he explored a variety of instruments during his youth, it was the viola’s rich, soulful tone and unique voice within the orchestra that ultimately captured his heart.

“From a purely physical standpoint, the viola was a better match because I’m tall and have long fingers, so the fit of a larger instrument under my chin was MUCH better. From an expressive/artistic standpoint, the viola is a better representative of my persona: singing, introspective, showy when it needs to be but happy out of the spotlight.”

With the world of music now open to him, Vendryes began a journey that would become his life’s work.

“My parents wanted me to consider becoming a lawyer or a biologist, two of the other professions that I was interested in. But I started taking private lessons on a regular basis beginning my sophomore year in high school and I received a scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of Music, prep division. I studied with Sally O’Reilly there for three years, took theory and ear training courses, played in the orchestra and did a lot of chamber music. All those things were very formative for me as a musician and they helped me make up my mind about what I wanted to do with my career moving forward.”

During this time, he also participated in numerous summer music programs including two formative summers at Kinhaven Music School in Weston, Vermont.

When compared to other youth music programs, Basil says a unique feature of Kinhaven was the variety of activities: “You had orchestra, chamber music, choir, kitchen duty, and pottery, yet all of those choices funneled into our growth as musicians and human C O LO R A D O S Y M P H O N Y.O R G

beings.” Another distinguishing feature was the noncompetitive environment, “which was helpful for those who had not made the commitment to a life as a musician and to others like me who were deciding. The positive atmosphere, the magical location, and the imaginative, creative, and inspiring faculty and students helped me make up my mind.”

One of Basil’s fondest memories was singing in the chamber choir under the “demanding but kind” direction of Jerry Bidlack. He attributes the intensity of that work – learning to focus, to blend his voice with those of others, and to develop a sense of internal pitch and rhythm – as contributing to his success as a professional musician.

“I wouldn’t trade those summers for anything in the world – they shaped me as a person and a player.”

When it came time to attend college, he earned a scholarship to attend the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York, where he studied with Heidi Castleman and Francis Tursi. These formative years as a student and pupil had a lasting impact on him, setting the foundation for a career as a professional musician and a future music educator himself.

“I feel very blessed that I had teachers who cared about me, who were interested in my success, and who I wanted to put in the work for in those formative early years.”

Professional success was soon to follow for Vendryes. At 18 he began to play regularly with the Rochester Philharmonic under David Zinman and in his senior year at Eastman he won a B contract with the orchestra. He joined the San Francisco Symphony in 1982 at the age of 21 and two years later returned to New York City as a member of the New York Philharmonic. Playing with his hometown orchestra satisfied the dreams and hopes of family and friends who would always say, ‘maybe one day we’ll see you playing in the Philharmonic’, but his heart remained in the Bay Area, and so he returned to San Francisco after a year, spending the next eight as part of the SFSO. It was in San Francisco that he met and married his wife Jennifer and started a family.

However, the cost of raising a family in the Bay Area led Vendryes to explore opportunities elsewhere. As luck would have it, the principal viola position with the Colorado Symphony came open in 1993 and after winning the audition, Basil and his family moved to Denver.

It was an exciting period for the orchestra which had appointed Marin Alsop as music director the same day he won his audition in March 1993.

“Marin brought stability and savvy to the orchestra. She always created adventurous programs — we won a few ASCAP/BMI awards during her tenure — and engaged our audiences. We owe a lot to her for making a very good orchestra great and for creating a welcoming and worthwhile experience for both our players, patrons and community.”

A distinguished four-decade career has taken him around the world. As a member of the Aurora String Quartet (1986-95) Basil performed recitals in New York, London and Tokyo as well as west coast premieres of works by John Harbison, George Perle, Richard Danielpour, Benjamin Lees and many others. He has served as guest principal violist for the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and appeared in many prestigious music festivals, including Spoleto, Buzzards Bay, Sunflower, Midsummer Mozart, Interharmony, Green Mountain, Taconic, and the Grand Tetons.

Despite a rigorous performance schedule, the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of his mentors and instruct the next generation of musicians was one he couldn’t pass up.

Since 1995, he has served on the faculty of the Lamont School of Music of the University of Denver as an adjunct professor of viola.

“I received a call from the chairman of the String Department at Lamont asking if I might have an interest in teaching at the School of Music so I had a brief audition and gave a master class and have been teaching there ever since.”

Basil’s demanding yet warm persona has endeared him to generations of future violists who flock to the University of Denver to learn from one of the elite violists in the country.

“My students often describe me as tough, but a teddy bear, and I suppose that’s accurate,” he laughs.

“I expect my students to work for me but I understand that each student is different and how they learn is different so I do my very best to work with each student in a unique way that will help them become better instrumentalists and musicians during their time at Lamont.”

While imparting the tools and techniques to help students achieve their dreams, Vendryes also helps guide students through the difficulties of live performance.

“I think one of the most important things that any aspiring musician can do is to spend a lot of time on stage, finding out what works and doesn’t work, to get nervous and make mistakes because we all do. Mistakes are a very common part of live music even though we wish they weren’t. Having an opportunity to learn from mistakes in a performance environment is such an important aspect of what we teach.”

Basil’s passion for teaching continued to flourish and in 2000 he founded the Colorado Young Sinfonia (CYS), a youth ensemble comprised of some of the best young talent in the Denver area ages 14 to 22.

“It had been a dream of mine for some time to conduct and I was able to realize that dream by establishing this string ensemble for young people that I directed for eighteen years.”

For promising instrumentalists, there’s a gap between the early rigors of learning and the practical realities of becoming a professional musician, he points out. CYS helped talented young players who needed the discipline, practice, and experience of making music on a professional level.

“We managed to survive, to keep the doors open, if you will,” says Vendryes. “We kept our costs to a minimum; the dues were small; the concerts were free, because it’s not about money; it’s about service. I wanted to give something back to my students. We filled a niche that typical youth orchestras didn’t, as a string or chamber orchestra. When you have an orchestra with wind and brass instruments, your programming will address that complement – you must find pieces that will utilize those players. But you miss a lot of important musical literature that way. So, players get experience with pieces they would play more rarely. Most important, it gave the players a chance to be heard. You’re among fourteen violins, not forty, and it created a positive pressure that promoted excellence. It gave me a chance to help them develop a rich, warm sound without having to break away and work with the winds. In return, it gave me a very close-knit, no-nonsense group of players. That seriousness of purpose is something I enjoyed very much.”

Near the end of the 2010’s, various commitments and projects were pulling Vendryes in a number of different directions. In addition to being a principal player for the Colorado Symphony, his work as an instructor in a large studio at the Lamont School of Music, private tutoring, leading Colorado Young Sinfonia, and performing as a chamber musician and solo artist, meant his time was at a premium. As a result, he made the difficult decision in 2018 to discontinue involvement with Colorado Young Sinfonia.

“It was very difficult for me, since it was my way of giving back to the community, as well as helping young talent learn to play and love music as much as I do. The time and effort it took to run the orchestra, on top of my other commitments, was wearing me down but I still miss so many aspects of the CYS, especially the smiles from the players and the audiences.”

Just two years later, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down.

The pandemic forced the cancellation of the Colorado Symphony’s indoor performances from March 2020 to September 2021 and curtailed most of Basil’s teaching schedules at

the university and at home. Most performances were discontinued for the better part of almost two seasons, with virtual performances becoming the norm during that time. This unexpected hiatus left many musicians wondering what to do. For Vendryes, it was an unexpected opportunity to pursue another passion project.

“I had begun thinking of what I can leave behind in the way of a legacy – an aural memoir for those who might wish to hear a little bit of what I’ve done over the past four-plus decades of playing, teaching, and mentoring. This time became available, and the idea of using it well led to a rekindling of my dream to create a recording.”

“I began conversations with Martin Anderson (the mastermind behind Toccata Classics) about potential projects and we struck a deal on a disc of Russian viola sonatas for his Toccata Next label. I had been playing the Ivan Sokolov Sonata for a bit and the Glinka Sonata is an ‘old friend’ in the repertoire. I knew of the Bunin Sonata but had not played it, although I had taught the Concerto, and Shebalin was completely new to me, and so they seemed to make a good compilation.”

His solo recording of these Russian sonatas was released in 2021, while a second album of chamber music for viola by Russian composer Paul Juon was released in 2022, and a third chronicling a century of American writing for viola was released in 2024 with all receiving positive reviews from Fanfare and Strad magazines, as well as the Journal of the American Viola Society.

“I’m so proud of the work that went into these recordings. So often the ‘thought’ of pursuing the idea to record is often overshadowed by the ‘reality’ of what it takes to make it possible.

Through generous community support, these projects were able to become a reality.”

Over 30 years with the Colorado Symphony, Vendryes has been a part of countless unforgettable performances and witnessed the evolution of the orchestra into a 21st century ensemble.

“It has been quite a journey here in Colorado with our orchestra. Working with four, and soon to be five music directors, lots of new faces both in the orchestra and in administration, committees, lean times, successes, we have seen it all. We have had frustrating moments and some very dark times, but we have weathered storms that many in the industry thought we would not be able to withstand. Most importantly, at this point we have many friends, patrons, and supporters that we can add to a fine assemblage of players and a dedicated, focused management team. Our future looks incredibly bright and I see our orchestra being an industry leader for many years to come.”

Balancing the demands of being a principal player while guiding and inspiring an entire section requires not only technical mastery but also a deep sense of collaboration and leadership.

“Being a principal player is a combination of many things. It is a relationship with the ‘circle’ of other principals within the string section and their partners on the first desks, making decisions about bowings, and character of the music we play. It is a line to the podium, trying to bring that person’s insights and wishes to my section. It is a responsibility to the other violists in my section to help shape our lines, lead entrances/exits and impart the character of the music. And of course, I am the one who plays the occasional solos written for a single viola. I am blessed with a super talented group of players that make up the viola section of the Colorado Symphony which makes my job pretty easy.”

Music has the power to bring people together in a way that’s both powerful and unique.

Yet orchestras around the world continue to struggle with the lack of musicians of color who are auditioning for and winning positions, something that is evident when you see the orchestra on stage.

As one of the few Black musicians in major American orchestras over the years, Vendryes has often found himself reflecting on what it takes to create lasting change in the field. The problem, he believes, doesn’t lie in the fairness of blind auditions—a practice designed to eliminate bias—but in the pipeline leading up to them. “It’s not that people of color aren’t talented or capable,” he said. “It is in so many ways a numbers game: if only two or three players of color come to an audition of 100 players, regardless of their ability, the odds are not very good. The challenge is twofold: cultivation of talent for people of color in the schools and at home, followed by participation of more players of color at auditions.

This lack of representation on stage underscores a larger issue within classical music — a systemic gap that starts long before musicians reach the audition process and extends to the repertoire presented to audiences.

“We have consistently offered great music by great composers, both living and dead, of color, of various nationalities,” added Vendryes. “I think we’re moving in the right direction, we just have to do more of it. When audiences come into the hall, we hope that they leave having heard and enjoyed something different. And if they don’t like it or don’t understand it, come back the next day,” he added. “There is meaning behind every work we put before you, regardless of who it is by.”

Basil’s commitment to breaking barriers in classical music extends far beyond his role in the orchestra, reaching into communities and institutions striving for change. He has served on the jury for the Sphinx Competition — a national competition for string musicians that provides career advancement opportunities and addresses systemic obstacles within Black and Latino communities. He has also been an artist for the Colour of Music Festival which highlights the impact and historical significance of Black classical composers and performers on world culture. In 2023, he was recognized by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission as a recipient of their 2023 Humanitarian Award.

After decades of performing with some of the world’s top orchestras, Vendryes has found a true sense of belonging in Denver, a city that has become much more than just a stop along his musical journey.

“My family and I love the Denver area. I always describe it as an active but sane existence here, not the nonstop buzz of New York or the crowdedness of San Francisco. It has been a perfect place to raise our boys, enjoy our home, and make friends. It has fantastic culture, food, recreation, you name it, it’s here. And we have one of the great orchestras in the nation!”

Reflecting on his remarkable career, Vendryes is quick to express gratitude for the journey that has defined his life’s work.

“I have been fortunate to have a career in music – one that has allowed me to play fantastic repertoire with world-class performers and ensembles and has taken me to many cities and countries around the globe. I have participated in festivals with wonderful artist colleagues and friends and have shared my craft through teaching serious students of the viola and chamber music. All in all, a pretty satisfying 40-plus years in this business – one that is not for the faint of heart.”

For over three decades, Basil Vendryes has been an unwavering presence for the Colorado Symphony, leading the viola section with a skill and sensitivity that’s matched only by his passion for creating space in classical music for everyone. Vendryes carries a unique legacy — not only as a brilliant musician but as a trailblazer in a field that has often lacked diversity. From the stage of Boettcher Concert Hall to the countless lives he’s touched through teaching and mentorship, Vendryes has brought a singular voice to the world of music, reminding all who listen that every note has a story.

SPOTLIGHT BIOGRAPHIES PETER OUNDJIAN, conductor Recognized as a masterful and dynamic presence in the conducting world, Peter Oundjian has developed a multi-faceted portfolio as a conductor, violinist, professor and artistic advisor. He has been celebrated for his musicality, an eye towards collaboration, innovative programming, leadership and training with students and an engaging personality.

Strengthening his ties to Colorado, Oundjian is now Principal Conductor of the Colorado Symphony in addition to Music Director of the Colorado Music Festival, which successfully pivoted to a virtual format during the pandemic summers of 2020 and 2021.

Now carrying the title Conductor Emeritus, Oundjian’s fourteen-year tenure as Music Director of the Toronto Symphony served as a major creative force for the city of Toronto and was marked by a reimagining of the TSO’s programming, international stature, audience development, touring and a number of outstanding recordings, garnering a Grammy nomination in 2018 and a Juno award for Vaughan Williams’ Orchestral Works in 2019. He led the orchestra on several international tours to Europe and the USA, conducting the first performance by a North American orchestra at Reykjavik’s Harpa Hall in 2014.

From 2012-2018, Oundjian served as Music Director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra during which time he implemented the kind of collaborative programming that has become a staple of his directorship. Oundjian led the RSNO on several international tours, including North America, China, and a European festival tour with performances at the Bregenz Festival, the Dresden Festival as well as in Innsbruck, Bergamo, Ljubljana, and others. His final appearance with the orchestra as their Music Director was at the 2018 BBC Proms where he conducted Britten’s epic War Requiem.

Highlights of past seasons include appearances with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Iceland Symphony, the Detroit, Atlanta, Saint Louis, Baltimore, Dallas, Seattle, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. With the onset of world-wide concert cancellations, support for students at Yale and Juilliard became a priority. In the 2022/2023 season, Oundjian conducted the opening weekend of Atlanta Symphony, followed by return engagements with Baltimore, Indianapolis, Dallas, Colorado and Toronto symphonies, as well as a visit to New World Symphony.

Oundjian has been a visiting professor at Yale University’s School of Music since 1981, and in 2013 was awarded the school’s Sanford Medal for Distinguished Service to Music. A dedicated educator, Oundjian regularly conducts the Yale, Juilliard, Curtis and New World symphony orchestras.

An outstanding violinist, Oundjian spent fourteen years as the first violinist for the renowned Tokyo String Quartet before he turned his energy towards conducting.

ITZHAK PERLMAN, violin Undeniably the reigning virtuoso of the violin, Itzhak Perlman enjoys superstar status rarely afforded a classical musician. Beloved for his charm and humanity as well as his talent, he is treasured by audiences throughout the world who respond not only to his remarkable artistry, but also to his irrepressible joy for making music.

Having performed with every major orchestra and at concert halls around the globe, Mr. Perlman was granted a Presidential Medal of Freedom – the Nation’s highest civilian honor – by President Obama in 2015, a National Medal of Arts by President Clinton in 2000, and a Medal of Liberty by President Reagan in 1986. Mr. Perlman has been honored with 16 GRAMMY® Awards, four Emmy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Genesis Prize.

In the 2024/25 season, Mr. Perlman celebrates the 30th anniversary of his iconic PBS special In the Fiddler’s House with performances in Cleveland, Kansas City, Costa Mesa, Bethesda, and Mesa alongside today’s klezmer stars including Hankus Netsky, Andy Statman and members of the Klezmer Conservatory Band. He is joined by an illustrious group of collaborators – Emanuel Ax, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the Juilliard String Quartet – in a special Itzhak Perlman and Friends program in select appearances presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, UC Santa Barbara’s Arts & Lectures, and the San Francisco Symphony. His orchestral engagements include Cinema Serenade programs with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Tucson Symphony, and Nashville Symphony as well as a concerto performance with the Colorado Symphony.

He continues touring An Evening with Itzhak Perlman, which captures highlights of his career through narrative and multi-media elements intertwined with performance, and plays recitals across North America including Seattle, Portland, Austin, San Antonio, West Palm Beach and Sarasota among others with pianist Rohan De Silva in their 25th anniversary season.

Over the past thirty years, Mr. Perlman has been devoted to music education, mentoring gifted young string players alongside his wife Toby in the Perlman Music Program. SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM NOTES FLORENCE B. PRICE (1888-1953) Adoration for String Orchestra Arranged by Tyler Merideth Florence Price was born on April 9, 1888 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and died June 3, 1953 in Chicago.

Adoration was composed for organ around 1950. The arrangement for string orchestra is by Tyler Merideth. Duration is about 4 minutes. This is the premiere performance by the orchestra.

Florence B. Price was a musical pioneer — one of the first African-American students to graduate from the New England Conservatory of Music; the first African-American woman to have a symphonic work performed by a major American orchestra; the first winner of the composition contest sponsored by the progressive Wanamaker Foundation.

Florence Beatrice Smith was born in 1888 into the prosperous and cultured family of a dentist in Little Rock, Arkansas, and received her first piano lessons from her mother, a schoolteacher and singer; Florence first played in public when she was four. She later also took up organ and violin, and at age fourteen was admitted to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she studied with George Chadwick and Frederick Converse, two of their generation’s leading composers, wrote her first string trio and a symphony (now lost), and graduated in 1907 with honors for both an artist diploma in organ and a teaching certificate.

She returned to Arkansas, where she taught at Arkadelphia Academy and Shorter College before being appointed music department chairman at Clark University in Atlanta in 1910. She returned to Little Rock two years later to marry attorney Thomas J. Price, and left classroom teaching to devote herself to raising two daughters, giving private instruction in violin, organ and piano, and composing.

In 1927, following racial unrest in Arkansas that included a lynching, the Price family moved to Chicago, where Florence studied composition, orchestration, organ, languages and liberal arts at various schools with several of the city’s leading musicians and teachers. Black culture and music flourished in Chicago then — jazz, blues, spirituals, popular, theater, even classical — educational opportunities were readily available, recording studios were established, the National Association of Negro Musicians was founded there in 1919, and Price took advantage of everything. She ran a successful piano studio, wrote educational pieces for her students, published gospel and folksong arrangements, composed popular songs (under the pseudonym VeeJay), and performed as a church and theater organist. Among her many friends were the physician Dr. Monroe Alpheus Majors and his wife, organist and music teacher Estelle C. Bonds, and Price became both friend and teacher to their gifted daughter, Margaret. In 1932, Price and Bonds (then just nineteen) won respectively first and second prize in the Rodman Wanamaker Foundation Composition Competition, established to recognize classical compositions by Black composers, Price for her Symphony in E minor and Piano Sonata and Bonds for her song Sea Ghost. The performance of Price’s Symphony on June 15, 1933 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Frederick Stock, was the first by a major American orchestra of a symphonic work by an African-American woman. Price continued to compose prolifically — three more symphonies and two more piano concertos, a violin concerto, chamber, piano and organ pieces, songs, spiritual arrangements, jingles for radio commercials — and received numerous performances, including her arrangement of the spiritual My Soul’s Been Anchored

SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM NOTES in the Lord that Marian Anderson used to close her historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on April 9, 1939. Florence Price died in Chicago on June 3, 1953.

Price graduated from the New England Conservatory with honors in organ performance, and taught and performed on the instrument throughout her life, in both church and theater.

She was an active member of the Chicago Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and the Chicago Club of Women Organists, and composed many works for her own public performances and worship services and for publication that ranged from concert suites, fugues and passacaglias to short devotional and secular pieces such as Hour of Peace, Caprice, Little Pastorale and Adoration, one of her best-known organ compositions. Price published Adoration in 1951 with the Lorenz Company of Dayton, Ohio. The arrangement of Adoration for string orchestra is by composer and arranger Tyler Merideth, Orchestra and Choir Conductor at Hillwood High School in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Merideth and his student musicians have committed to contributing the proceeds from his arrangement to the recording of the solo piano works of Florence Price by pianist Karen Walwyn.

@ IGOR STRAVINSKY (1882-1971) Suite from The Firebird (1919 Version) Igor Stravinsky was born on June 17, 1882 in Oranienbaum, Russia, near St. Petersburg, and died on April 6, 1971 in New York City. He composed The Firebird between November 1909 and following April. The premiere was given at the Paris Opéra by the Ballet Russe on June 25, 1910. The score calls for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp and strings. Duration is about 23 minutes. This piece was last performed March 28-29, 2015, with David Lockington conducting.

Fireworks. There could not have been a more appropriate title for the work that launched the meteoric career of Igor Stravinsky. He wrote that glittering orchestral miniature in 1908, while still under the tutelage of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and it shows all the dazzling instrumental technique that the student had acquired from his teacher. Though the reception of Fireworks was cool when it was first performed at the Siloti Concerts in St. Petersburg on February 6, 1909, there was one member of the audience who listened with heightened interest. The impresario Serge Diaghilev was forming his Ballet Russe company at just that time, and he recognized in Stravinsky a talent to be watched. He approached the 27-year-old composer and requested orchestral transcriptions of short pieces by Chopin and Grieg that would be used in the first Parisian season of the Ballet Russe. Stravinsky did his work well and on time.

During that same winter, plans were beginning to stir in the creative wing of the Ballet Russe for a Russian folk ballet — something filled with legend and magic and fantasy. The composer Nikolai Tcherepnin was associated with the Ballet Russe at that time, and it was assumed that he would compose the music for a plot derived from several traditional Russian sources. However, Tcherepnin was given to inexplicable changes of mood and he was losing interest in ballet at the SOUNDINGS 2 0 24/ 2 5

SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM NOTES time, so he withdrew from the project. Diaghilev inquired whether Stravinsky had any interest in taking it over, and he agreed. The triumphant premiere of The Firebird in Paris on June 25, 1910, rocketed Stravinsky to international fame.

The ballet’s story deals with the glittering Firebird and the evil ogre Kashchei, who captures maidens and turns men to stone if they enter his domain. Kashchei is immortal as long as his soul, which is preserved in the form of an egg in a casket, remains intact. The plot shows how Prince Ivan wanders into Kashchei’s garden in pursuit of the Firebird; he captures it and exacts a feather before letting it go. Ivan meets a group of Kashchei’s captive maidens and falls in love with one of them. The princesses return to Kashchei’s palace. Ivan breaks open the gates to follow them, but he is captured by the ogre’s guardian monsters. He waves the magic feather and the Firebird reappears to smash Kashchei’s vital egg; the ogre expires. All the captives are freed and Ivan and his Tsarevna are wed.

Stravinsky drew three concert suites from The Firebird. The 1919 suite includes six scenes from the complete score. The first two, Introduction and The Dance of the Firebird, accompany the appearance of the magical creature. The Round Dance of the Princesses uses the rhythm and style of an ancient Russian dance called the Khorovod. The Infernal Dance of King Kashchei, the most modern portion of the score, depicts the madness engendered by the appearance of the Firebird at Kashchei’s court after the revelation to Ivan of the evil ogre’s vulnerability. The haunting Berceuse is heard when the thirteenth princess, the one of whom Ivan is enamored, succumbs to a sleep-charm that saves her from the terrible King while Ivan destroys Kashchei’s malevolent power. The Finale, initiated by the solo horn, confirms the life-force that had been threatened by Kashchei.

@ LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61 Ludwig van Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770 in Bonn, and died on March 26, 1827 in Vienna. He composed his only Violin Concerto in 1806, completing the score just in time for the premiere on December 23 at the Theater-an-der-Wien, Vienna. Franz Clement, for whom the work was written, was the soloist at the first performance. The score calls for flute, pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns and trumpets, timpani, and strings. Duration is about 42 minutes. This piece was last performed April 21-23, 2023, conducted by Pter Oundjian and featuring James Ehnes on violin.

In 1794, two years after he moved to Vienna from Bonn, Beethoven attended a concert by an Austrian violin prodigy named Franz Clement. To Clement, then fourteen years old, the young composer wrote, “Dear Clement! Go forth on the way which you hitherto have travelled so beautifully, so magnificently. Nature and art vie with each other in making you a great artist.

Follow both and, never fear, you will reach the great — the greatest — goal possible to an artist here on earth. All wishes for your happiness, dear youth; and return soon, that I may again hear your dear, magnificent playing. Entirely your friend, L. v. Beethoven.”

Beethoven’s wish was soon granted. Clement was appointed conductor and concertmaster PROGRAM VI

SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM NOTES of the Theater-an-der-Wien in Vienna in 1802, where he was closely associated with Beethoven in the production of Fidelio and as the conductor of the premiere of the Third Symphony.

Clement, highly esteemed by his contemporaries as a violinist, musician and composer for his instrument, was also noted for his fabulous memory. One tale relates that Clement, after participating in a single performance of Haydn’s The Creation, wrote out a score for the entire work from memory. Of Clement’s style of violin performance, Boris Schwarz wrote, “His playing was graceful rather than vigorous, his tone small but expressive, and he possessed unfailing assurance and purity in high positions and exposed entrances.” It was for Clement that Beethoven produced his only Violin Concerto.

The sweet, lyrical nature and wide compass of the solo part of this Concerto were influenced by the polished style of Clement’s playing. The five soft taps on the timpani that open the work not only serve to establish the key and the rhythm of the movement, but also recur as a unifying phrase throughout. The main theme is introduced in the second measure by the woodwinds in a chorale-like setting. A transition, with rising scales in the winds and quicker rhythmic figures in the strings, accumulates a certain intensity before it quiets to usher in the second theme, another legato strophe entrusted to the woodwinds. Immediately after its entry, the violin soars into its highest register, where it presents a line spun around the main thematic material of the orchestral introduction. The development section is largely given over to wide-ranging figurations for the soloist. The recapitulation begins with a recall of the five drum strokes of the opening, here spread across the full orchestra sounding in unison. The themes from the exposition return with more elaborate embellishment from the soloist. Following the cadenza, the second theme serves as a coda.

“In the slow movement,” wrote English music scholar Sir Donald Tovey, “we have one of the cases of sublime inaction achieved by Beethoven and by no one else except in certain lyrics and masterpieces of choral music.” The comparison to vocal music is certainly appropriate for this hymnal movement. Though it is technically a theme and variations, it seems less like some earthbound form than it does a floating constellation of ethereal tones, polished and hung against a velvet night sky with infinite care and flawless precision. Music of such limited dramatic contrast cannot be brought to a satisfactory conclusion in this context, and so here it leads without pause into the vivacious rondo-finale. The solo violin trots out the principal theme before it is taken over by the full orchestra. This jaunty tune returns three times, the last appearance forming a large coda. The intervening episodes allow for a virtuoso display from the soloist and even a touch of melancholy in one of the few minor-mode sections of the Concerto. ©2024 Dr. Richard E. Rodda

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IF I AM LATE? For the comfort and enjoyment of our musicians and patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall.

They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

WHEN SHOULD I CLAP? During most Classics performances, there is a short, silent pause between each movement of a piece. You can determine how many movements there are in a piece, and how many silent pauses there will be, by looking at your program — the movements in each piece will be listed there. The applause is usually reserved for the end of the final movement of the piece, after the conductor has signaled the end of the final note with his or her baton or hand. Holding applause between movements is considered respectful of the performers' concentration and mindful of musical continuity.

WHAT IS YOUR CELL PHONE/PHOTO/ VIDEO POLICY? We ask that you please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking or texting on them during performances. Flash photography is prohibited at all times. We ask that you please refrain from taking any photos or video during Classics or Movie at the Symphony concerts unless the conductor is off the podium. During Symphony Pops concerts you may take pictures without a flash and may record short cell phone videos.

Please be courteous to your fellow concertgoers and be aware that if at any time your cell phone/camera use becomes a distraction to others, an usher may ask you to stop.

CAN I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS INTO THE CONCERT? You are welcome to bring drinks purchased at one of the bars into all concerts. Food is not allowed in the Hall, including food purchased in the Lobby.

CAN I BRING THE KIDS? Kids of all ages will enjoy our Family, education concerts, and many of our Symphony Pops, Holiday, and Summer concerts. All children require a ticket regardless of age, and child tickets are $10. Classics concerts tend to be between 2 and 21/2 hours long. Please consider this when deciding whether or not to bring your child. If your child is disturbing other patrons, an usher may ask you to take your child into the lobby for the remainder of the performance, without refund.

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL CONCERT? Program length varies, but a typical performance lasts about two hours, including one 20 minute intermission. Visit the event page on our website, or flip to the performance details in this Soundings Magazine.

WHAT IF I’M UNABLE TO ATTEND MY PERFORMANCE? Subscribers may exchange tickets free of charge — one of many subscriber benefits!

Non-subscribers may exchange for an additional fee. You may exchange tickets in person, by phone, or online for another performance within the same season. There is an additional cost if seating upgrades apply, and all exchange requests are subject to availability. You may also donate your tickets back to the Colorado Symphony and receive a donation receipt.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF A CONCERT IS CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER? We rarely cancel a concert due to inclement weather, but when this occurs we will send a direct email notification to all ticket holders.

THE COLORADO SYMPHONY’S WEBSITE, coloradosymphony.org, provides information on all Colorado Symphony activities at Boettcher Concert Hall and other venues around Colorado including performances at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts, and more.

Other venues may require the use of another ticketing source; however, you will always be directed to the official ticketing agent or source by using coloradosymphony.org/navigation.

NO SMOKING: Boettcher Concert Hall is a smoke free venue. Any and all forms of smoking are prohibited in the venue.

SECURITY: In furtherance of Denver Arts & Venues ongoing initiative to create a safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Symphony Association is pleased to partner with the Denver Performing Arts Complex on the newlyintroduced security measures for Boettcher Concert Hall and all venues within the complex.

We encourage you to arrive up to 45 minutes prior to the start of your event. This will alleviate congestion in all walk ways and entrances and will allow for proper screening. To review the full policy and prohibited items, please visit artscomplex.com.

In the event of a building emergency patrons will be notified by an announcement from the stage. Should the building need to be evacuated, please exit the nearest door, or according to instructions given from stage.

FIRST AID FACILITIES for all patrons are available. Please inquire with an usher should you need these facilities or assistance. Please report any accidents, falls, or lost items to an usher promptly.

ELEVATOR is located within the venue after passing through security and having your ticket scanned. Please follow the signs to the southeast end of the main lobby. The elevator is to the left of the entrance of Gallery 1 on the first level of the lobby.

COAT CHECK is located underneath the main lobby stairs in the hallway leading to Gallery 1.

BAR SERVICE is provided at most concerts.

Concessions are managed by Centerplate.

The Colorado Symphony Association does not manage concessions, ordering, or realize profit from concessions.

LOST AND FOUND items should be reported promptly to the House Manager, via an usher, or directly. Lost items are kept by the usher staff until the end of the performance. After the performance items are taken to Arts & Venues Lost and Found. If attempting to claim lost property during or shortly after your performance, please see an usher. If you’ve left the hall and have a lost item, please call 720.865.4200.
