WELCOME

Dear Colorado Symphony Family,

Welcome to our 2023/2024 Season! On behalf of our talented musicians, dedicated staff, and passionate Board of Trustees, I am thrilled to extend a warm welcome to each and every one of you.

It has been a dream come true to join the Colorado Symphony as President & CEO and I’m honored to have this opportunity to lead one of the premier orchestras in the country. The Colorado Symphony has a reputation for artistic excellence and boundary pushing programming that has helped redefine what a symphony can be in the 21st century. But perhaps I’ve been most impressed with the orchestra’s commitment to serving community and efforts to build a thriving future for live symphonic music through education. This season is poised to be one of our most memorable, highlighted by a yearlong celebration of our Centennial. This is an incredible milestone and one we could not have reached without the longstanding support of this community. We are your symphony and this celebration belongs as much to you as it does to our orchestra.

The Colorado Symphony is committed to enriching our community through the transformative power of symphonic music, and this season’s schedule is no exception. Our programming this year promises to be a dynamic blend of beloved classics, groundbreaking premieres, and innovative collaborations that will touch your heart and soul.

We are especially excited for our fall slate including special one-night-only performances alongside Audra McDonald, Renée Fleming, and Stewart Copeland. And in May we’ll welcome the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma for a performance of Elgar’s renowned Cello Concerto.

In addition to our mainstage concerts, we are delighted to present a wide array of engaging events and initiatives designed to enhance our reach and impact in the community. Our educational and community outreach programs continue to thrive, bringing music education and access to underserved communities throughout Colorado. We also invite you to participate in our pre-concert preludes, post-concert talkbacks, and other special events that provide deeper insights into the music and foster a sense of connection and camaraderie.

None of this would be possible without the steadfast support of our donors, sponsors, and subscribers like you. Your unwavering commitment to the arts enables us to thrive and expand our impact in the community. We are so grateful for your generosity and belief in the power of music to transform lives.

As we embark on this Centennial Season, I invite you to join us in celebrating the joy, beauty, and emotional depth that only live orchestral music can offer. Together, let us revel in the transformative power of symphonic music and forge new connections that will resonate long after the final note has faded.

Thank you for being a part of our Colorado Symphony family. We look forward to sharing an unforgettable season of music with you and can’t wait to journey into our next century of symphonic music together.

With sincerest gratitude,

WHAT IF I AM LATE?

For the comfort and enjoyment of our musicians and patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

WHEN SHOULD I CLAP?

During most Classics performances, there is a short, silent pause between each movement of a piece. You can determine how many movements there are in a piece, and how many silent pauses there will be, by looking at your program — the movements in each piece will be listed there. The applause is usually reserved for the end of the final movement of the piece, after the conductor has signaled the end of the final note with his or her baton or hand. Holding applause between movements is considered respectful of the performers' concentration and mindful of musical continuity.

WHAT IS YOUR CELL PHONE/PHOTO/ VIDEO POLICY?

We ask that you please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking or texting on them during performances. Flash photography is prohibited at all times. We ask that you please refrain from taking any photos or video during Classics or Movie at the Symphony concerts unless the conductor is off the podium. During Symphony Pops concerts you may take pictures without a flash and may record short cell phone videos. Please be courteous to your fellow concertgoers and be aware that if at any time your cell phone/camera use becomes a distraction to others, an usher may ask you to stop.

CAN I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS INTO THE CONCERT?

You are welcome to bring drinks purchased at one of the bars into all concerts. Food is not allowed in the Hall, including food purchased in the Lobby.

CAN I BRING THE KIDS?

Kids of all ages will enjoy our Family, education concerts, and many of our Symphony Pops, Holiday, and Summer concerts. All children require a ticket regardless of age, and child tickets are $10. Classics concerts tend to be between 2 and 21/2 hours long. Please consider this when deciding whether or not to bring your child. If your child is disturbing other patrons, an usher may ask you to take your child into the lobby for the remainder of the performance, without refund.

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL CONCERT?

Program length varies, but a typical performance lasts about two hours, including one 20 minute intermission. Visit the event page on our website, or flip to the performance details in this Soundings Magazine.

WHAT IF I’M UNABLE TO ATTEND MY PERFORMANCE?

Subscribers may exchange tickets free of charge — one of many subscriber benefits! Non-subscribers may exchange for an additional fee. You may exchange tickets in person, by phone, or online for another performance within the same season. There is an additional cost if seating upgrades apply, and all exchange requests are subject to availability. You may also donate your tickets back to the Colorado Symphony and receive a donation receipt.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF A CONCERT IS CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER?

We rarely cancel a concert due to inclement weather, but when this occurs we will send a direct email notification to all ticket holders. Updates, cancelations, or changes will be posted on coloradosymphony.org and on the event page for the concert.

A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

Colorado Symphony Commemorates 100 Years of Symphonic Music

In the vibrant cultural tapestry of the Mile High City, the Colorado Symphony has stood as a pillar of orchestral excellence and artistic innovation for a century. As the symphony embarks on its landmark Centennial Season, the stage is set for a year of breathtaking performances, cherished memories, and a celebration of the organization’s far-reaching impact on the community. It also provides an opportunity to reflect not only on the milestone, but on the incredible journey that has led to this moment and the significance of a symphony orchestra in today’s ever-changing world.

Since its inception not long after the conclusion of the First World War, change has been ever-present for the orchestra, as it was for the growing city it called home, necessitating continuous evolution and growth. As America rolled by like an army of steam rollers, the orchestra remained true to their core tenets by captivating audiences with exceptional musicianship and a dedication to artistic excellence that has stood the test of time.

The Colorado Symphony’s roots can be traced back to November 6, 1922 when the fledgling Civic Symphony Orchestra — a semi-professional precursor to the orchestra we know today — held their first performance under the baton of Horace Tureman.

In 1934 Helen Marie Black, the symphony’s volunteer publicist, along with Jeanne Cranmer and Lucille Wilkin founded the Denver Symphony Orchestra (DSO) in the midst of the Great Depression, consolidating all the musicians in the city and guaranteeing union wages. The DSO gave their first performance on November 30, 1934 under the Baton of Tureman. Meanwhile, Black became the first female symphony manager in the United States, serving in that capacity for the DSO for more than 30 years, twelve of them as an unpaid volunteer.

From 1934 to 1989, amid the rise of the United States as a global power, the Denver Symphony Orchestra gained national recognition while remaining a fixture in the city, even as other forms of music including Jazz, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Pop, and Hip-Hop rose in prominence and popularity.

After 55 years as the Denver Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble underwent another transformation after experiencing financial difficulties that resulted in bankruptcy in 1989

14 COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG STORIES OF NOTE

and was reorganized into the Colorado Symphony. The newly formed Colorado Symphony Association adopted a collaborative structure that required musicians to serve on the Board of Trustees and be active in the governance of the organization, making it unique among full-time professional orchestra nationwide. The new name also better reflected the orchestra’s statewide reach and mission to engage communities beyond the Denver metropolitan area.

To celebrate the orchestra’s Centennial, this season promises an array of captivating performances, educational programs, and collaborations alongside some of music’s biggest names including Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, and Audra McDonald. From Beethoven’s iconic symphonies to contemporary movies, the season’s repertoire represents a harmonious blend of timeless classics and groundbreaking new works.

“The Colorado Symphony’s Centennial is a testament to the enduring power of music and its ability to touch lives across generations, said Mark Cantrell, Colorado Symphony President & CEO. “This milestone represents a century of exceptional artistry, tireless support from our community, and an unwavering commitment to enriching Colorado through the universal language of music.”

Principal Conductor Peter Oundjian echoed Cantrell’s sentiment and emphasized the importance of commemorating this historic moment: “This Centennial Season is an opportunity to reflect on the rich heritage of the Colorado Symphony and its contribution to the cultural fabric of our city. We have curated a season that pays homage to our past while embracing the future, showcasing our orchestra’s versatility and innovation.”

One of the pivotal moments in the orchestra’s history came in 1993 when Marin Alsop was appointed as music director for the newly minted Colorado Symphony, becoming the first woman to lead a major American orchestra. Under Alsop’s inspiring leadership, the symphony experienced a period of remarkable growth and artistic achievement, earning international acclaim and solidifying its reputation as a trailblazer in the classical music world.

15 COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

Reflecting on her time as music director and the significance of the Centennial, Alsop remarked, “The Colorado Symphony holds a special place in my heart, and I am immensely proud to witness this historic moment in its journey. As we celebrate 100 years of musicmaking, it is vital to recognize the orchestra’s role in fostering cultural understanding, nurturing young talents, and bringing joy to the lives of countless listeners. This Centennial marks a milestone not only for the symphony but for the community it serves.”

Since its inception, this ensemble has traversed a century of remarkable achievements, significant milestones, and transformative moments that have shaped its journey. Here are some key moments in the orchestra’s illustrious history:

• 1922: The Civic Symphony Orchestra is established — a semi-professional precursor to the Denver Symphony Orchestra. Their first performance was Nov. 6, 1922 under the baton of Horace Tureman.

• 1934: On November 30, the Denver Symphony Orchestra (DSO) gives its first performance as a professional orchestra under the direction of Horace Tureman. Denver’s Broadway Theatre, Tabor Opera House, and Municipal Auditorium (now the Ellie Caulkins Opera House) hosted the ensemble’s first few decades of great events including notable guests like Sergei Prokofiev in 1938.

• 1944: Saul Caston is appointed as the music director, succeeding Tureman who led the orchestra from 1922-1944. Caston led the orchestra for two decades through 1964, contributing to its growth and artistic development. A 1951 Time article documented his leadership, declaring, “Last season the Denver Symphony was among the leaders in performing American music”.

• 1964: Caston is followed as Music Director by Vladimir Golschmann, former conductor of the St. Louis Symphony.

• 1970: Brian Priestman succeeds Golschmann as Music Director, serving as the orchestra’s artistic leader through 1979. During his tenure, the orchestra experienced artistic and financial success, along with strong community support.

16 COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG
STORIES OF NOTE 1934 1978

• 1972: Denver voters approved a bond issue to build a new performance space specifically for the symphony, what would eventually become Boettcher Concert Hall.

• 1978: Boettcher Concert Hall is completed and opened within the Denver Performing Arts Complex. It is the first U.S. symphony hall to be built in the round. The first documented performance was February 26 with Brian Priestman on the podium.

• 1984: In October, the Denver Symphony Chorus is formed by Duain Wolfe.

• 1988–1989: The 55th and final season of the Denver Symphony Orchestra. The final performance for the DSO comes on March 25, 1989.

• 1989–1990: The orchestra is reorganized as the Colorado Symphony Orchestra/ Association. Both musicians and management agree to a collaborative structure that requires musicians to serve on its Board of Trustees and be active in the governance of the organization making it unique among full-time professional orchestras nationwide

• 1989: On October 27, the Colorado Symphony gave their inaugural performance in front of over 16,000 attendees at the former McNichols Arena performing works by Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, Bernstein, Williams, Beethoven, and more.

• 1993: Marin Alsop becomes the music director, making history as the first woman to lead a major American orchestra. Under Alsop’s inspiring leadership, the orchestra experienced a period of tremendous artistic growth and international acclaim.

• 2001: In September of 2001, the Colorado Symphony had a scheduled performance with world-renowned cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. The 9/11 attacks prompted Alsop and Ma to change the originally scheduled September 12 program to offer an entirely new concert evening meant to offer solace and hope to the Denver community, still reeling with grief and confusion.

• 2004–2005: Marin Alsop announced her final season as the Colorado Symphony’s Music Director to take an appointment with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Alsop remains Conductor Laureate to this day.

• 2005: Jeffrey Kahane succeeds Alsop as Music Director serving in the role until 2008. The Denver Post described Kahane’s tenure as one “that has been marked by increased audiences and an uncommonly strong bond with the orchestra’s musicians.”

17 COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG
1993
2013

• 2013: Andrew Litton assumed the role of music director, bringing his distinctive artistic vision and further elevating the symphony’s reputation, recording and releasing three CDs, including the first under the Colorado Symphony’s own recording label: Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Colorado Symphony Chorus.

• 2017: Brett Mitchell began a four-season tenure as music director, helping to expand the symphony’s offerings to new audiences.

• 2020: In March, the Colorado Symphony made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of their 2019/20 Season following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A few months later, they will also cancel their entire 2020/21 Season as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc on performing arts organizations around the world. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Colorado Symphony played on, adapting swiftly and continuing to engage audiences through virtual performances, innovative digital initiatives, and socially distanced outdoor performances, ensuring that the power of music remained available to all Coloradans during an unprecedented period in history.

• 2021: On July 18, the Colorado Symphony performed in Boettcher Concert Hall for the first time with live audiences since March of 2020, performing their 2021/22 Season preview concert under the baton of Resident Conductor Christopher Dragon.

• 2021-2022: Colorado Symphony returned for their first full season since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

• 2022: On February 15, the orchestra appointed Peter Oundjian as Principal Conductor, becoming the most recent artistic leader for the organization. Oundjian, who previously served as the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor from 2003 to 2006 and had been a frequent collaborator over two decades, joined the Colorado Symphony after a 14-year tenure as the Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

These milestones are only a snapshot of the symphony’s remarkable journey over the past century. As the orchestra celebrates its Centennial this season, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of music and the remarkable impact of the arts on society. Whether through annual performances at Denver’s Independence Eve in Civic Center Park, crossover collaborations with fellow cultural organizations and sports teams like

Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, the Denver Zoo, and the Denver Broncos, concert events at venues throughout the state, or education initiatives that annually reach tens of thousands of Denver young people, the Colorado Symphony’s impact has never been greater. This season will be no exception, reflecting on the symphony’s past while also serving as a springboard into an exciting, vibrant future.

In recent years, the symphony has expanded its reach through groundbreaking collaborations with acclaimed artists like RZA, Brandi Carlile, Nathaniel Rateliff, Kristin Chenoweth, Gregory Alan Isakov, and more which have brought symphonic music to unconventional venues and to new audiences. This forward-thinking approach has attracted a wider demographic, nurturing a vibrant and diverse community of symphony supporters that will ensure the organization’s relevance in the decades to come.

Beyond the exhilarating musical offerings, the Centennial Season builds on the existing successes of the organization’s community engagement programs through enhanced outreach initiatives that highlight the symphony’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. Educational programs, partnerships with local schools, and community concerts further strengthen the symphony’s community impact.

“The Colorado Symphony’s Centennial Season is a time to honor our past, celebrate our present, and look forward to the future,” added Cantrell. “We are immensely proud of the symphony’s rich history and the profound impact it has had on our community. With the support of our dedicated musicians, visionary leaders, and passionate audience, we are poised to embark on the next chapter of our musical journey.”

Above all, this celebration is a testament to this community, whose support over the last 100 years has ensured that Denver will always have a symphony orchestra to call its own, and without whom none of these achievements would have been possible.

“This celebration carries special significance for all of us because we could not have reached this milestone without the overwhelming and longstanding support of our community,” added Oundjian. “We are your symphony and this celebration belongs as much to you and our state as it does to our orchestra. As Denver has flourished, so has its orchestra and we’re proud to be one of the longest serving cultural institutions in the Centennial State thanks to you.”

As the Colorado Symphony takes center stage and looks ahead to the next 100 years of music, the spotlight shines on a century of remarkable achievements and a legacy that will resonate for generations to come. Consider a donation today and help maintain this thriving ecosystem of support for the next 100 years. The future of live symphonic music belongs to all of us and together we can make a lasting impact on Colorado for generations to come. JOHN WILLIAMS, composer

In a career spanning more than six decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage. He has served as music director and laureate conductor of one of the country’s treasured musical institutions, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and he maintains thriving artistic relationships with many of the world’s great orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mr. Williams has received a variety of prestigious awards, including the National Medal of Arts, the Kennedy Center Honors, an honorary KBE from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Olympic Order, and numerous Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. He remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices.

Mr. Williams has composed the music and served as music director for more than one hundred films. His 50-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, Munich, Hook, Catch Me If You Can, Minority Report, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Empire of the Sun, The Adventures of TinTin, War Horse, The BFG and Lincoln. Their latest collaboration, The Fabelmans, was scored in early 2022. Mr. Williams composed the scores for all nine Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone, Nixon, The Patriot, Angela’s Ashes, Seven Years in Tibet, The Witches of Eastwick, Rosewood, Sleepers, Sabrina, Presumed Innocent, The Cowboys, The Reivers and Goodbye, Mr. Chips among many others. His current film project is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, directed by James Mangold and the fifth installment of the iconic franchise. He has worked with many legendary directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, William Wyler and Robert Altman. In 1971, he adapted the score for the film version of Fiddler on the Roof, for which he composed original violin cadenzas for renowned virtuoso Isaac Stern. He has appeared on recordings as pianist and conductor with Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Jessye Norman, and others. Mr. Williams has received five Academy Awards and fifty-three Oscar nominations, making him the Academy’s most-nominated living person and the second-most nominated person in the history of the Oscars. His most recent nomination was for The Fabelmans. He also has received seven British Academy Awards (BAFTA), twenty-five Grammys, four Golden Globes, five Emmys, and numerous gold and platinum records.

Born and raised in New York, Mr. Williams moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1948, where he studied composition with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. After service in the Air Force, he returned to New York to attend the Juilliard School, where he studied piano with Madame Rosina Lhevinne. While in New York, he also worked as a jazz pianist in nightclubs. He returned to Los Angeles and began his career in the film industry, working with a number of accomplished composers including Bernard Herrmann, Alfred Newman, and Franz Waxman. He went on to write music for more than 200 television films for the groundbreaking, early anthology series Alcoa Theatre, Kraft Television Theatre, Chrysler Theatre and Playhouse 90. His more recent contributions to television music include the well-known theme for NBC Nightly News (“The Mission”), the theme for what has become network television’s longest-running series, NBC’s Meet the Press, and a new theme for the prestigious PBS arts showcase Great Performances.

MOVIES BIOGRAPHIES

In addition to his activity in film and television, Mr. Williams has composed numerous works for the concert stage, among them two symphonies, and concertos for flute, violin, clarinet, viola, oboe and tuba. His cello concerto was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and premiered by Yo-Yo Ma at Tanglewood in 1994. Mr. Williams also has filled commissions by several of the world’s leading orchestras, including a bassoon concerto for the New York Philharmonic entitled “The Five Sacred Trees,” a trumpet concerto for the Cleveland Orchestra, and a horn concerto for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. “Seven for Luck”, a seven-piece song cycle for soprano and orchestra based on the texts of former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove, was premiered by the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood in 1998. At the opening concert of their 2009/2010 season, James Levine led the Boston Symphony in the premiere Mr. Williams’ “On Willows and Birches,” a new concerto for harp and orchestra. In 2021, Williams premiered his second violin concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood along with soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter, for whom he composed the work.

In January 1980, Mr. Williams was named nineteenth music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, succeeding the legendary Arthur Fiedler. He currently holds the title of Boston Pops Laureate Conductor which he assumed following his retirement in December 1993, after fourteen highly successful seasons. He also holds the title of Artist-in-Residence at Tanglewood.

One of America’s best known and most distinctive artistic voices, Mr. Williams has composed music for many important cultural and commemorative events. “Liberty Fanfare” was composed for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. “American Journey,” written to celebrate the new millennium and to accompany the retrospective film The Unfinished Journey by director Steven Spielberg, was premiered at the “America’s Millennium” concert in Washington, D.C. on New Year’s Eve, 1999. His orchestral work “Soundings” was performed at the celebratory opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. In the world of sport, he has contributed musical themes for the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and the 1987 International Summer Games of the Special Olympics. In 2006, Mr. Williams composed the theme for NBC’s presentation of Sunday Night Football.

In 2003, he received the Olympic Order, the IOC’s highest honor, for his contributions to the Olympic movement. He served as the Grand Marshal of the 2004 Rose Parade in Pasadena and was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in December of that year. In 2018, he received the Trustees Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Mr. Williams was inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2009, and in January of that same year he composed and arranged “Air and Simple Gifts” especially for the first inaugural ceremony of President Barack Obama. SECURITY: In furtherance of Denver Arts & Venues ongoing initiative to create a safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Symphony Association is pleased to partner with the Denver Performing Arts Complex on the newlyintroduced security measures for Boettcher Concert Hall and all venues within the complex. We encourage you to arrive up to 45 minutes prior to the start of your event. This will alleviate congestion in all walk ways and entrances and will allow for proper screening. To review the full policy and prohibited items, please visit artscomplex.com.

In the event of a building emergency patrons will be notified by an announcement from the stage. Should the building need to be evacuated, please exit the nearest door, or according to instructions given from stage.

FIRST AID FACILITIES for all patrons are available. Please inquire with an usher should you need these facilities or assistance. Please report any accidents, falls, or lost items to an usher promptly.

ELEVATOR is located within the venue after passing through security and having your ticket scanned. Please follow the signs to the southeast end of the main lobby. The elevator is to the left of the entrance of Gallery 1 on the first level of the lobby.

COAT CHECK is located underneath the main lobby stairs in the hallway leading to Gallery 1.

BAR SERVICE is provided at most concerts. Concessions are managed by Centerplate. Please see the FAQ page regarding policy on food and beverage in Boettcher Concert Hall. The Colorado Symphony reserves the right to change the concessions policy at any time. The Colorado Symphony Association does not manage concessions, ordering, or realize profit from concessions.

LOST AND FOUND items should be reported promptly to the House Manager, via an usher, or directly. Lost items are kept by the usher staff until the end of the performance. After the performance items are taken to Arts & Venues Lost and Found. If attempting to claim lost property during or shortly after your performance, please see an usher. If you’ve left the hall and have a lost item, please call 720.865.4200.

THE GUILD SHOP: Located in Gallery 1 on the first floor of Boettcher Concert Hall, The Shop (as it's affectionately known) is the perfect place to pick up unique gifts, seasonal fashions, and of course recordings produced by, and of, the Colorado Symphony.
