As one of Colorado’s premier ensembles, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is creating a new model for American orchestras through dynamic performances that reflect our community’s own values, creativity, and sense of place. Voted “Best of Boulder” yet again in 2015, today’s Boulder Phil is bucking national trends with growing, enthusiastic audiences under the vision and leadership of Music Director Michael Butterman.

Recognized as “Boulder’s premier orchestra” (Boulder Weekly), the Boulder Phil is comprised of the top freelance musicians from Colorado’s Front Range and beyond. Founded in 1958, the Boulder Phil became a fully professional ensemble under the leadership of Michael Butterman, Music Director Theodore Kuchar, whose tenure as music director began in 1996. Today the Boulder Phil reaches audiences of over 20,000, with performances from Arvada to Highlands Ranch as well as regular invitations to perform at the prestigious Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek. The Boulder Phil strives to inspire the next generation of music-lovers through Discovery Concerts that have reached thousands of 4th and 5th grade students in 28 schools across three counties. For decades the Phil has also fostered new talent with the annual Young Artist Concerto Competition, and Boulder Phil musicians provide mentorship through side-byside concerts with the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras and Front Range Youth Orchestras. In all these ways, the Boulder Phil strives to be at the center of our community’s cultural fabric.

The Boulder Phil’s main concert series—broadcast state-wide on Colorado Public Radio—is presented at Macky Auditorium, a historic jewel on the University of Colorado campus. From multi-genre productions featuring dance, choral and visual elements to concerts with a unique hometown flavor, the Phil’s imaginative programming has resulted in increasing numbers of sold-out concerts and nationwide notice in Symphony Magazine. In recent seasons the Phil has collaborated with an impressive 45 local organizations, encompassing arts, science, nature, youth, social services and more. By going beyond simply performing great music, we strive to connect ever more people to the inspiring power of orchestral music.

About the Boulder Ballet The origins of Boulder Ballet begin with the Ballet Arts Studio, founded by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette and British dancer Barbara Demaree. The first performing company, Boulder City Ballet, was founded in 1982 by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. In 1985 the company changed its name to Boulder Ballet Ensemble, and in 1995 to Boulder Ballet. Since 1989, Boulder Ballet has enjoyed a partnership with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra in presenting classical ballets complete with professional scenery, costumes, lighting designs, and casts of up to 100 dancers. Our rich history includes bringing classic, contemporary, and uniquely theatrical ballet to an audience that stretches from Estes Park to Highlands Ranch, in venues from the 2,000-seat opera house Macky Auditorium, to historic Boulder Theater in downtown Boulder, and to outdoor amphitheaters throughout the Denver-metro area. Boulder Ballet has had a number of strong influences including the versatile artistry of past artistic directors Milenko Banovich (Zagred Ballet), Robin Haig (Royal Ballet), and John Prinz (American Ballet Theatre). Artistic Director Ana Claire and recently appointed Associate Artistic Director Lance Hardin continue to build on the proud tradition of artistic excellence through innovation. With a profound respect for their art, the duo will continue challenging their dancers and enlightening their audiences with versatile productions from the contemporary Stepping Out to the classic The Nutcracker to the timeless tale of Cinderella. The company’s season has been expanded and refined with performances that currently reach over 20,000 in the Denver Metro area and beyond. The Boulder Ballet School (BBS) provides ballet training for all ages, pre-school through adult, in a uniquely artistic and creative atmosphere. As a professional-track ballet school, BBS challenges students dedicated to pursuing dance as a career, but also welcomes those who dance purely for enjoyment. Boulder Ballet classes are held in three spacious studios at the Dairy Center for the Arts in central Boulder and Artistic Director Ana Claire has successfully recruited an outstanding faculty with international performing and teaching experience. The sevenlevel curriculum is designed to produce well-rounded artists who achieve not only technical proficiency but also an essential expressive quality in their dancing. A unique feature of the school is the largest dance program in the region developed specifically for boys. Geared towards ages nine and above, this program includes Boyz Dance—a mix of dance, mime and juggling—and Boys Ballet, which focuses on the male classical technique. BBS students have excelled in a number of competitions, including the world’s largest, the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), where BBS students have won first-place awards and the regional Grand Prix (single highest award), and have been invited to perform in New York City among the world’s finest young dancers. Former BBS students have gone on to dance with world-class companies including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet British Columbia, Hubbard Street Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group, Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, England’s Royal Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet, to name a few. Boulder Ballet now looks to an exciting future under the artistic direction of Ana Claire and Lance Hardin, including continuing collaborations with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, additional outreach programs, and new choreographic explorations. Boulder Ballet’s Commitment to Community Former Boulder Ballet Artistic Director Peter Davison once said, “Everything we do grows out of community.” He was not just speaking of choreography and artistic vision. He was also speaking of the impact of sharing and connecting through the art of ballet. Boulder Ballet has grown and flourished for more than a quarter of a century on the Front Range; our roots are deep in Colorado. So, too, is our commitment to community through education and outreach programs. Our primary goal is to reach those students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience dance and movement. Since its inception more than a decade ago, Steps in Time remains a much-requested educational outreach program. Originally choreographed by Ana Claire, the assembly-format program seamlessly illustrates the history of ballet and its continuing influence on all forms of dance. Through beautiful choreography, humorous narration, and powerful dancing by our professional company, Steps in Time moves students beyond stereotypes and opens their eyes to the precision, expression, and athleticism of ballet. Each year this lively, interactive education program is presented to over 4,000 students in five different Front Range counties. In particular, Boulder Ballet reaches out to a large number of Title 1 schools—often with few arts resources—and students in free/reduced lunch programs. For many of these children, it is their first exposure to ballet, and they love it. Boulder Ballet’s artist-in-residence program for elementary schools, Poetry of Motion, features a Boulder Ballet instructor in residence at the school for up to two weeks. This program is designed to make a long-lasting impact on the minds and hearts of the students through the integration of dance and movement into the school’s curriculum. Poetry of Motion is focused on teaching students the value of creative expression without judgment. Through the integration of dance and movement, the program inspires confidence in creative expression, joy in collaborating with others, and passion for interpretive dramatic art, all based around state standards for Physical Education. Using fun exercises and games, students explore the realm of bodies in motion and imaginative expression. The model is group-oriented and playful. The cumulative effect of immersion over a two-week period builds students’ skills and confidence. New for the 2015/16 school year, the week-long artist-in-residence program Reach the Summit brings Boulder Ballet to the middle school level to build on past participation in existing programs and introduce a cross-disciplinary element that directly links earth science and arts curricula. The mission of the new middle school program focuses on the 3 C’s: building community, developing students’ skills directly related to their school curriculum, and fostering creativity through dance, health, and fitness. Boulder Ballet is equally committed to the successful community outreach programs Open Previews and Ballet in the Park. Since 2005, we have reached over 16,000 underserved individuals who are frequently excluded from exposure to the performing arts. These two programs were specifically designed to remove the financial barrier to participation. Through Open Previews, Boulder Ballet works with key social-service organizations to distribute free tickets to full-scale final dress rehearsals of our major productions—including the ever-popular Nutcracker in collaboration with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. Our free, outdoor summer concert series, Ballet in the Park, also reaches out to low-income families, teens in crisis, struggling single parents, and seniors on fixed incomes as well as the community at large in an effort to make the arts accessible to all. Our Nutcracker Story ACT ONE It’s Christmas Eve and a young girl, Clara, is put to bed by her parents as they leave for a party. Quickly asleep, she dreams she is at a festive Christmas Eve party surrounded by family and friends. Clara’s uncle, the mysterious Drosselmeyer, arrives and entertains the children with magic tricks, juggling, and life-size dancing dolls. He gives Clara a nutcracker doll that she adores, but her brother Fritz is envious and steals it, tripping and breaking it. Drosselmeyer quickly mends it with his magic handkerchief. The party ends and Clara goes off to bed, forgetting her nutcracker doll. When she returns to look for it in the darkened living room, she finds Drosselmeyer still there. Suddenly, midnight strikes and strange things begin to happen. Human-sized mice dart through the shadows, the Christmas tree grows to astounding heights, and huge rats appear led by the fearsome Rat King. Then toy soldiers and the Nutcracker (now life-size) march in to protect Clara and engage the rats in a fierce battle. When the Rat King knocks the Nutcracker to the floor, Clara takes her shoe and strikes a fatal blow to the Rat King’s head. The battle over, Clara finds herself in a snow-covered forest, and discovers that she has become a young woman. Then she sees that the Nutcracker, recovering from the battle, is now a handsome prince. They embark together on a journey through a snow-covered forest with dancing snowflakes and frost.

ACT TWO Continuing to dream, Clara and her Nutcracker Prince are led by Drosselmeyer through the realm of angels, who escort them to the Land of Sweets. They are welcomed by dignitaries and are presented to the Queen, Sugar Plum Fairy. She asks how her visitors won admission to her land, and the Prince reenacts the battle with the Rat King including Clara’s heroic rescue. The people of the Land of Sweets rejoice over the victory and award Clara a crown and the key to their kingdom. Sugar Plum Fairy delights Clara and her Prince with a tour of the Land of Sweets. Dancers from Spain, Arabia, China, and Russia entertain the visitors. The Marzipan dance to the music of reed flutes. Then a larger-than-life Mother Ginger, her baker’s dozen of gingerbread cookies, and Sugar Plum Fairy herself perform for the guests. Finally, the Dew Drop Fairy and her flower garden dance in the Waltz of the Flowers. Clara awakens from her dream, once more a little girl. Then Drosselmeyer appears and places her nutcracker doll in her arms before vanishing. Was her dream real…or is this a dream yet to come?

Artistic Directors ANA CLAIRE (Artistic Director) Although born in Boulder, Ana grew up on a ranch near Fairplay, Colorado. At the age of eight she saw American Ballet Theatre perform Swan Lake and fell in love with the art of ballet. In an extraordinary gift of support, Ana’s mother then drove her to ballet classes in Denver throughout her childhood. Ana has studied ballet with Maxine Williamson, Fernando Schaffenberg, Milenko Banovich, Barbara Demaree, and Larry Boyette. She performed with Fort Worth Ballet, Fort Worth Opera, David Taylor Dance Theater, Aladdin Theater, Boulder’s Dinner Theatre, Jan Justis Dance Company, 3rd Law Dance/Theater and was principal ballerina with Boulder Ballet for many years. Ana studied dance pedagogy at Texas Christian University and attended the teacher training workshop with former New York City Ballet principal Jillana. Ana originated Boulder Ballet’s acclaimed outreach program Steps in Time which has been performed at numerous schools throughout the Boulder/Denver area. A passionate teacher for over 25 years, she is dedicated to helping students achieve technical excellence while nurturing their individual artistry. She has produced, directed, and choreographed the annual Storybook Ballet for over 20 years, each with original music, scenery, and costumes. Co-artistic director since 2004, Ana assumed the role of sole Artistic Director this season. She has choreographed numerous classical and contemporary pieces for the Boulder Ballet company over her tenure, and co-choreographed the 1998, 1999, and all productions since 2001 of Boulder Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

LANCE HARDIN (Associate Artistic Director) Lance is a native of Chicago, IL, where he received his training from Larry Long at the Ruth Page Foundation School of Dance. He holds a B.S. in Ballet from Indiana University, where he studied under the direction of Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, Patricia McBride, Jacques Cesbron, and Violette Verdy. As a professional dancer, Mr. Hardin danced with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, North Carolina Dance Theatre (currently Charlotte Ballet), Chautauqua Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet Nouveau Colorado, Boulder Ballet, Springfield Ballet Company, and the Yoko Kasai Ballet Studio in Japan. He has performed principal roles in works by world-renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine (Allegro Brilliante, Four Temperaments, Western Symphony and Who Cares), Paul Taylor (Esplanade and Company B), Dwight Rhoden (Verge), Nacho Duato (Jardi Tancat), William Forsythe (In the Middle Somewhat Elevated), Michael Pink (Romeo and Juliet), and Alonzo King ( Map, Dreamer, and Chants). Mr. Hardin has taught dance for the past 23 years and holds numerous choreographic credits including Boulder Ballet’s Social Dances and Versus, James Sewell’s BalletWorks Project Fractured (a collaboration with his wife, Amy Earnest), The Denver Independent Choreographer’s Project, and Springfield Ballet Company. Versus was reviewed as “…the ultimate example of a clean, contemporary ballet” (Denver Dance Examiner). Prior to joining Boulder Ballet, Mr. Hardin served as Co-Dance Director at The Myles Reif Performing Arts Center in Grand Rapids, MN.

Company Dancers MARTIN GONZALO JUSTO BERNARDEZ is from Caracas, Venezuela, and began dancing in 1999. He trained with Quinte Ballet School in Canada and School of Carolina Ballet Theatre. He toured throughout Uruguay with CBT and has recently performed as a guest in Fujinomia, Japan, dancing pas de deux from Giselle, La Bayadere, and Swan Lake. Some of his signature roles are the charming young Nutcracker Prince in Hernan Justo’s The Nutcracker, the Mad Scientist in Madeline Jazz’s Super Heroes, and the male soloist in A Tango for Angelina. While dancing with CBT, Martin performed in works by renowned contemporary choreographers including Dwight Rhoden’s Beatle Juice and Alonzo King’s Map. This is Martin’s first season with Boulder Ballet. JULIANNA BICKI began her training with the International Ballet School. She later continued her training with Zamuel Ballet School, Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts, and Ballet Society of Colorado Springs. While training at Walnut Hill, Julianna was honored to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2008. Julianna has twice won first place at the annual Esther Geoffrey Young Dancer’s Competition, and has won fourth and fifth places at Denver Ballet Guild competitions. Julianna danced with Texas Ballet Theater under the direction of Ben Stevenson, O.B.E. as a trainee during their 2010–11 season, and since then has performed with the Colorado Jazz Dance Company, Ballet Frontier (Texas), Owen/Cox Dance Group (Kansas City), Napoles Dance Theater (San Francisco), and Arc Dance Company (Seattle). This is Julianna’s second season with Boulder Ballet. KELSEY BYRNE is from Orange County, California, where she received her training at the Orange County High School of the Arts in Santa Ana as a member of the Classical and Contemporary Dance Department. She also received training during summer intensives at the Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet, and Alonzo King’s LINES. She recently graduated from the Ballet Department in Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. At IU, she had the opportunity to perform a variety of Balanchine works including The Four Temperaments, Western Symphony, Emeralds, and Swan Lake, as well as classics such as La Bayadere and Michael Vernon’s adaptation of The Nutcracker. This is Kelsey’s first season with Boulder Ballet. RANIA CHARALAMBIDOU is from Nicosia, Cyprus. She attended Jacksonville University where she was awarded the Outstanding Freshman and Sophomore awards by the Dance Department. She graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Dance Education and a Math minor from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. While in New York, she trained at the Joffrey Ballet School and with Elena Kunikova at Steps on Broadway. Rania has been a company member with Sarasota Ballet, Columbia City Ballet, and Ballet San Antonio. In 2009, she performed with the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Susan Stroman’s Tony Award winning musical Contact. Rania has guest performed with San Angelo Civic Ballet, San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet, Dance Cyprus, Diesel | Fusion Dance Theatre, Florida Ballet, Freespace Dance, the Dance Platform contemporary dance festival in Cyprus, and many more. She also guest performed in the 50th anniversary celebration of the independence of Cyprus in 2010. Outside of dance, Rania is the co-owner of Long Body Yoga and 35° 33° Dance Company in Cyprus. This is Rania’s first season with Boulder Ballet.

Nutcracker Program 6 BoulderBallet | Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra 2015-2016

Company Dancers CLAIRE DAVISON (Guest Artist courtesy of American Ballet Theatre) was born in Boulder, Colorado. Davison received her initial ballet training at the Boulder Ballet School on full scholarship. She attended the Boston Ballet School, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, School of American Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet School summer programs on scholarship. Davison was awarded third place at the Denver Ballet Guild Young Dancer’s Competition and was a finalist at the Youth American Grand Prix competition in New York City in 2009. Davison was recognized as an international Young Medalist and performed at the International Ballet Festival of Miami. She joined the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre in 2010 and received the Ron and Toby Altman scholarship at that time. Davison joined ABT as an apprentice in November 2012 and became a member of the corps de ballet in June 2013. PETER DAVISON (Guest Artist, former Boulder Ballet Co-Artistic Director) began his career as a teenage juggler, street performing in his home town of Los Angeles. In 1979, at the age of 18, he was cast as a white-faced juggler in the movie “Xanadu” with Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. In 1982 Peter won first place at the National Juggling Championships, and became a founding member of the Boulder-based juggling/dance/theater trio Airjazz, which appeared at venues such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, New Zealand International Arts Festival, BAM, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Peter has performed solo shows at the Carmel/California Performing Arts Festival, Cincinnati Playhouse, Utah State Arts Tour, Seattle’s Moisture Festival, 5-3-1 Festival of New Juggling and Object Theatre in Finland, Chicago Contemporary Circus Festival, and at schools and theaters throughout Colorado. His TV appearances include “Harry Anderson—The Tricks of His Trade” (CBS), “The Paul Daniels Show” (BBC), and “30-Seconds to Fame” (Fox). Also a choreographer, Peter won the 2009 Ballet Builders Award from New Choreographers on Pointe in New York, and his works have been performed by Boulder Ballet, Ballet Nouveau Colorado, Saint Paul Ballet, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and others. Peter was Co-Artistic Director at Boulder Ballet from 2004 to 2015 prior to re-focusing on his movement work with objects. CORY GOEI is originally from Grand Rapids, MI, and began his training at the Grand Rapids Ballet. Mr. Goei’s interest in dance has allowed him to work and learn from outstanding choreographers, teachers, and directors around the world. He has danced professionally with the James Sewell Ballet, Grand Rapids Ballet, Dayton Ballet, and Ballet Met. Mr. Goei has been on the faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for eight years, and Artistic Director of the International Ballet Ensemble for the last five tours. This is Cory’s first season with Boulder Ballet. MATTHEW HELMS began his training in Colorado on full scholarship at the Academy of Classical Ballet, where he danced principal roles in The Nutcracker, Giselle and Le Corsaire. He then studied on full scholarship with Mark and Sandra Carlson and German Zamuel at the International Ballet School where he performed soloist roles in The Nutcracker and Peter Pan. Matthew competed in the 2008 Youth America Grand Prix and the 2008 Denver Ballet Guild Young Dancer’s competition where he received a full scholarship to the Ballet West Academy in Salt Lake City. Matthew has been a guest artist with ballet companies in Utah, California, and Idaho, and for the last three years has performed leading roles in ballets such as The Nutcracker, Paquita, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, and Le Corsaire. He choreographed a contemporary ballet that was premiered in the Ballet West Academy Spring show in 2009. Company Dancers Pre-Professional Trainee Program in 2010 and has trained with artists from American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Joffrey Ballet, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Kirov Ballet, and David Taylor Dance Theater. Matthew has studied martial arts since age three, been acting since age four, and has appeared in movies, commercials and TV shows as an actor or a fight choreographer. This is Matthew’s fifth season with Boulder Ballet. MELISSA HESLEP received her training at the School of Orlando City Ballet for 13 years under the direction of Beatrix Aldana and spent her summers training with teachers including Luba Gulyaeva, Mark Spivak, Valeria Sinyavakaya, and Veronica Aldana. She performed with the student company until 2001, and upon graduation was accepted into the 2002 Youth America Grand Prix finals in New York City. In Orlando, she performed with Russian Ballet under the direction of Vadim Fedotov and spent five seasons with Central Florida Ballet under the direction of Vasile Petrutiu. She has also had the opportunity to travel as a guest artist for many venues in the United States. Her repertoire includes classics such as The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and The Nutcracker, and many contemporary works. This is Melissa’s fifth season with Boulder Ballet. DIONYSIOS MITSIOS was raised in Jacksonville, FL by Greek parents. He attended Jacksonville University where he graduated magna cum laude with departmental honors in Dance and magna cum laude in Computer Information Systems. While in school he was awarded the Dance Management, Most Improved Dancer, and Dance Contribution Awards. During college, he also studied on scholarship at Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory, where he received the Service Award. At Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory, he had the opportunity to work with Moses Pendelton of Momix. His class at Nutmeg was used to choreograph Lunar Sea for Moses Pendelton, which is now touring for Momix. Upon graduation he has been fortunate to perform professionally with Florida Ballet, Charleston Ballet Theatre, HT Chen & Dancers, Busch Gardens, Ballet Revelle, Columbia City Ballet, Ballet San Antonio, and now Boulder Ballet. Danny has also been a guest performer with many organizations such as Ovations Dance Repertory Company, Freespace Dance, Equilateral Theater, Connecticut Dance Theatre, San Angelo Civic Ballet, San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet, and Skien Cultural Center in Norway. In addition to a dance career Danny is co-owner of Long Body Yoga, TheGreatestWebAndGraphics.com, and 35° 33° Dance Company in Cyprus. He is also an active member of the United States Coast Guard Reserves. This is Danny’s first season with Boulder Ballet. KATHRYN WAGNER, a native of Colorado, trained at the Arvada Center with Christina Noel-Adcock, Eve Paris, and Lisi Elsey. Kathryn has performed in numerous productions and outreach programs with the Arvada Center Dance Theater, and is now co-artistic director and choreographer for the pre-professional performance group. Additionally, Kathryn is an instructor for the Arvada Center’s Dance Department teaching aspiring dancers of all ages, and the Arts Days program offering art-centered, curriculum-based workshops to schools and corporate offices. In addition to teaching at the Arvada Center, Kathryn is an instructor for Boulder Ballet School. As a company member with Boulder Ballet, Kathryn’s favorite roles include Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Carabosse in The Sleeping Beauty, Evil Sea Witch in The Little Mermaid, Stepsister in Cinderella, Bride in Crimson Butterfly, and the role affectionately referred to as Doom in On the Move. A graduate of Regis University with a degree in elementary education, Kathryn is an experienced teacher who may be spotted subbing in classrooms around Boulder. This is Kathryn’s tenth season with Boulder Ballet.

Boulder Children’s Chorale

The Boulder Children’s Chorale (BCC) has established itself as one of the premier choirs for young singers in the Front Range through it’s commitment to musical excellence and education. BCC has three ensembles: Two Preparatory Choirs designed to train beginning and developing singers, and Bel Canto, which features our advanced singers. Since its inaugural season in 2009, Boulder Children’s Chorale has collaborated with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, Boulder Ballet, Mahlerfest, Boulder Kids for Bach, the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, Kutandara Marimba, CU Opera and with the adult ensembles of the Boulder Chorale. We are excited to be returning to The Nutcracker this year, and look forward a great 2015-2016 concert season. She holds a Masters of Music from Colorado State University and received her undergraduate degree in Music Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Kate holds all three levels of Kodály certification and has also completed Orff Schulwerk training. She has instructed students in private piano and voice, as well as teaching elementary general music and middle school choir in Colorado and Washington state public schools. From 20112013, Kate served on the artistic staff of the Spokane Area Youth Choirs in Spokane, Washington, where she directed elementary and middle level choirs. She has been a guest clinician and choral adjudicator for the St. Vrain Valley and Omak School Districts, and has sung with the Colorado Conductor’s Chorale and the Spokane Symphony Chorale. She resides in Boulder with her husband, Nathan. MEG LAWLESS Meg Lawless teaches middle school choral music and dramatic arts in Mead, Colorado and specializes in pre-adolescent and adolescent vocal technique and choral singing. She completed her Masters of Music in Music Education at University of Colorado-Boulder in 2014 and received her undergraduate degree in music education from Butler University in 2005. Meg began her career as Director of Choral Activities at Hong Kong International School in Hong Kong, China. She has also taught middle and high school choral music and drama in Indiana and Illinois public schools. From 2012-2014, Meg served as director of Bel Canto, a division of the Centennial Children’s Chorus. She has been a guest clinician for the Colorado American Choral Director’s Association, and worked in conjunction with the choral music staff of University of Colorado to develop the CU-Boulder Middle School Choral Festival. She resides in Lafayette with her husband, Ryan, and her son, Liam, and enjoys hiking, yoga, and soaking in the Colorado sunshine.

GARY LEWIS, Boulder Phil Principal Guest Conductor Gary Lewis is the Director of Orchestras and Professor of Music in the College of Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is also the Music Director and Conductor of the Midland-Odessa (TX) Symphony Orchestra. At CU, Mr. Lewis conducts the University Symphony Orchestra and oversees the entire orchestra program. He also leads the graduate program in orchestral conducting, including both the masters and doctoral level. Mr. Lewis is equally at home with professional, university, and youth ensembles. The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra has been chosen to participate in the new weeklong SHIFT Festival, taking place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, from March 27 through April 2, 2017. This inaugural, high-profile music festival showcases four orchestras and provides a national platform to celebrate creativity and community engagement. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, and the Brooklyn-based ensemble, The Knights, chosen from a pool of submissions from orchestras across North America, will also be participating. More details on the Boulder Phil’s involvement in this signature event will be forthcoming.
