Boulder Phil Celebrates 65 years!

One of Colorado’s premier ensembles, the Boulder Phil is a critically acclaimed professional orchestra serving Boulder and the greater metro-Denver region. Known for innovative concert programming presented at the highest artistic level and a growing commitment to authentic community engagement, the Boulder Phil continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be Boulder’s orchestra.

For over half a century, we have been defined by the artistry of our talented musicians, the support of our extraordinary patrons, and the ongoing creative collaborations with partner organizations encompassing the arts, sciences, nature, youth, and social services. As we celebrate our 65th Season, the Boulder Phil continues to strive to present once-in-a-lifetime performances, inspire the next generation with school-age education programs, and pioneer community-focused projects that bring music to all. Thank you for celebrating this monumental anniversary with us!

It is the mission of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra to enhance the Boulder region’s artistic and educational cultures through orchestral excellence, embracing diversity, and connecting people to music, music to ideas, and people to people.

About Boulder Phil

Join us in celebrating this milestone — four decades of performance, education, and collaboration!

The origins of Boulder Ballet began with the Ballet Arts Studios, founded in Denver and Boulder by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette in the 1970s. In 1981 the Boulder studio was purchased by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. The next year they started the first performing company, originally known as Boulder City Ballet. In 1995, the company and school became known as Boulder Ballet.

Our rich history includes bringing classical, contemporary, and uniquely theatrical ballet to venues that range from Estes Park to Highlands Ranch. Boulder Ballet currently performs in Macky Auditorium, Chautauqua Auditorium, Vance Brand Auditorium, the Dairy ARTS Center, the Stanley Hotel, Lakewood Cultural Center, Littleton Town Hall, and outdoor amphitheaters in the Denver metro area for our summertime events.

Since its founding, the professional company has been led by several notable former dancers, including Miljenko Banovic (Zagreb Ballet), Robin Haig (Royal Ballet), John Prinz (American Ballet Theatre), Peter Davison, Ana Claire, and Lance Hardin. With the 2022–23 season, we are thrilled to welcome our new artistic director, Ben Needham-Wood.

This is a time for joy and wonder. The holidays are a celebration of what we most cherish in our lives and are an opportunity to create memories that will last a lifetime. As the newly appointed Artistic Director of Boulder Ballet, I could not be more proud and grateful to be sharing this Holiday Season with you all.

The Nutcracker is one of ballet’s most iconic traditions. Performed in nearly every major city across the United States, the story of a young child’s fantastic adventure inspires us to dream and dance. We get to imagine a beautiful world, full of characters and delights, and the music invites us to move with its melodies. The Nutcracker is one of the most precious gifts any ballet company can offer because it amplifies the strength of our community.

Artists of all ages come together to create a magical production, allowing today’s generation of professionals to share a legacy with aspiring artists-to-be. It not only preserves the art we love, it becomes the launching pad for a new generation of cultural innovation.

Boulder Ballet is celebrating its 40th Anniversary Season — a historic milestone for any company! In that spirit of innovation, we’re excited to share that this year’s Nutcracker features a brand new generation of choreography. While the sets and costumes honor the previous productions of Boulder Ballet’s Nutcracker, the movements have been redesigned to reflect the unique talents of the dancers in our school and professional company. It is incredibly challenging to reimagine something so familiar, but everyone involved has shared a truly special gift with this new production.

I would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who has been part of this adventure — the professional artists in our company, our staff and administrative team, our educators and coaches, the young artists in our school, the parents and families, the board of directors, and all those who have contributed to Boulder Ballet’s Nutcracker over this company’s 40-year history. We would not be here today without you.

Thank you for sharing your holiday with us at Boulder Ballet. We wish you another season of joy and wonder and hope to see you again at a future performance. Cheers!

Nutcracker Program II / Boulder Ballet / Boulder Phil
Presented by Boulder Ballet and the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra

The Stahlbaum family hosts their annual Christmas Eve party, inviting all their family and friends to celebrate the holiday. Their young daughter, Clara, is especially excited. Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives and shares his magic tricks, guests dance joyously, and there are presents for all the children. Clara is delighted by the gift of a Nutcracker but becomes distraught when it accidentally breaks. Luckily, Drosselmeyer comes to the rescue and fixes the Nutcracker. After the guests leave, Clara falls asleep awaiting the magic of Christmas morning.

But strange things begin to happen when midnight strikes. An army of mice and rats, led by the fearsome Rat King, appear. As Clara struggles to get away, her Nutcracker awakens and leads an army of toy soldiers into battle with the Rat King. When all appears lost, Clara knocks the Rat King to the floor, saving the Nutcracker.

The Nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince and leads a grown-up Clara on a journey through the snow-covered forest and the realm of angels to the Land of Sweets. They are welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. The court players recount the battle and Clara’s heroic act. The Sugar Plum Fairy thanks Clara with a celebration of dances from all of the Sweets.

When Clara awakens, she is back in her own bed. With the Land of Sweets still on her mind, she wonders whether it was all a dream…or is it a dream yet to come?

Thanks to our Nutcracker sponsors:

BEN NEEDHAM-WOOD, Artistic Director

Ben Needham-Wood is an EMMY Awardwinning choreographer, filmmaker, and dance educator. Ben received his BFA in Ballet (magna cum laude) from the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, OH. He then went on to enjoy a 12-year performance career dancing primarily with the Louisville Ballet in Kentucky and Smuin Contemporary Ballet in San Francisco, CA. As a performer Ben was honored to receive two Isadora Duncan Dance Award nominations and a favorable review from The New York Times.

Ben’s choreographic career began while still performing. His creations have been presented nationally by professional companies, TV networks, commercial airlines, film festivals, and galas. In 2018, Ben and his long-time collaborator, Weston Krukow, co-created the dance film BaseBallet: Into the Game, which was awarded four regional EMMY Awards and recognized by film festivals across the country. This feature was preceded by the short film, BaseBallet, which was also recognized with a regional EMMY Award and was later exhibited at the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Ben was the first appointed Artistic Fellow of Amy Seiwert’s Imagery in 2018. Two years later he founded his own company, Redirecting Dance, in order to produce works that amplify critical social issues and inspire empathy. Through his company Ben has been closely studying the impacts of movement on mental health. This research continues to inform his work as a choreographer and leader in the performing arts.

Conductor

Gary Lewis is the Director of Orchestral Studies and the Bob and Judy Charles Professor of Conducting in the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he conducts the University Symphony Orchestra and oversees the entire orchestra program. He is also Music Director and Conductor of the West Texas Symphony Orchestra.

At CU Boulder Mr. Lewis also leads the graduate program in orchestral conducting including both the masters and doctoral level. His former students are currently enjoying success as conductors with professional orchestras and opera companies, university and public school ensembles, and youth orchestras.

Prior to his appointment at Colorado, Lewis served on the faculties of Texas Tech University, The Ohio State University, The University of Michigan, and Abilene Christian University. He is equally at home with professional, university, and youth ensembles. He is the Principal Guest Conductor of the Boulder Philharmonic and has appeared with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra (Chengdu, China), the Colorado Music Festival, Boulder Ballet, Midland Ballet Theater, Ballet Lubbock, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, the Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra, the New Symphony Orchestra (Sofia, Bulgaria), and the Western Plains Opera Theater. His work with summer music festivals has also been noteworthy including the Interlochen Center for the Arts, Pine Mountain Music Festival (opera and symphonic) and Rocky Ridge Music Center. In recent years he has collaborated with artists such as Midori, Glenn Dicterow, Johannes Moser, Jeremy Denk, Jamie Bernstein, the Indigo Girls and many others.

As a strong advocate of music education, Mr. Lewis has presented many in-service workshops for public school educators, as well as numerous presentations at state and regional music education association conferences. In addition, he has conducted All-State Orchestras and Bands in many states along with the ASTA National Honor Orchestra and the Honor Orchestra of America. In 2010 Mr. Lewis became the founding Artistic Director of the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras and continues to serve as conductor of the Symphony Orchestra..

Mr. Lewis is also a strong proponent of new music. He has been instrumental in the development and production of contemporary music festivals and his interest in new music has led him to collaborations with composers such as Dan Kellogg, Carter Pann, George Crumb, William Bolcom, John Harbison, Chen Yi, Michael Daugherty, Stephen Paulus, and many others.

Mr. Lewis is a Yamaha Master Educator.
