As one of Colorado’s premier ensembles, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is creating a new model for American orchestras through dynamic performances that reflect our community’s own values, creativity, and sense of place. Voted “Best of Boulder” for the past four years in a row, today’s Boulder Phil is bucking national trends with growing, enthusiastic audiences under the vision and leadership of Music Director Michael Butterman. This season, we are proud to be one of four orchestras nationally to be featured in the SHIFT Festival of American Orchestras at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The Boulder Phil’s main concert series—broadcast state-wide on Colorado Public Radio—is presented at Macky Auditorium, a historic jewel on the University of Colorado campus. From multi-genre productions featuring dance, choral and visual elements to concerts with a unique hometown flavor, the Phil’s imaginative programming has resulted in increasing numbers of sold-out concerts and nationwide notice in Symphony Magazine. In recent seasons the Phil has collaborated with an impressive 45 local organizations, encompassing arts, science, nature, youth, social services and more. By going beyond simply performing great repertoire, we strive to connect ever more people to the inspiring power of orchestral music. Recognized as “Boulder’s premier orchestra” (Boulder Weekly) and “Boulder’s superb local professional orchestra” (Daily Camera), the Boulder Phil is comprised of the top freelance musicians from Colorado’s Front Range and beyond. Founded in 1958, the Boulder Phil’s recent history was shaped by notable music directors Oswald (Ozzi) Lehnert (1972-1996) and Theodore Kuchar (1996-2006), under whose leadership the Boulder Phil became a fully professional ensemble. Today the Boulder Phil reaches audiences of over 20,000, with performances from Arvada to Highlands Ranch as well as regular invitations to perform at the prestigious Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek. The Boulder Phil strives to inspire the next generation of music-lovers through interactive Discovery Concerts that reach thousands of students in grades 3-6 from dozens of schools across four counties. Boulder Phil musicians provide mentorship and inspiration through in-school visits, as well as annual side-by-side concerts with the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras. We make our performances accessible through $5 tickets for students. Our sensory-friendly chamber music concerts are created especially for families of children on the autism spectrum. Pre-concert lectures provide an opportunity for audiences to delve deeper into the music before each Masterworks program. In all these ways, the Boulder Phil strives to be at the center of our community’s cultural fabric.

About the Boulder Phil

About Boulder Ballet The origins of Boulder Ballet begin with the Ballet Arts Studio, founded by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette and British dancer Barbara Demaree, and located above Tom’s Tavern (now the restaurant Salt) at 11th and Pearl Street in downtown Boulder. The first performing company to grow out of the school, Boulder City Ballet, was founded in 1982 by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. In 1985 the company changed its name to Boulder Ballet Ensemble, and in 1995 to Boulder Ballet. Over this time, Boulder Ballet has had a number of strong influences including the versatile artistry of past artistic directors Milenko Banovich (Zagred Ballet), Robin Haig (Royal Ballet), and John Prinz (American Ballet Theatre). Since 1989, Boulder Ballet has enjoyed a partnership with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra in presenting classical ballets complete with professional scenery, costumes, lighting designs, and casts of up to 100 dancers. Our rich history includes bringing classic, contemporary, and uniquely theatrical ballet to an audience that stretches from Estes Park to Highlands Ranch, in venues from the 2,000-seat opera house Macky Auditorium, to historic Boulder Theater in downtown Boulder, and to outdoor amphitheaters throughout the Denver-metro area. Artistic Director Ana Claire and Associate Artistic Director Lance Hardin continue to build on the proud tradition of artistic excellence through innovation. They have challenged their dancers and enlightened their audiences with the versatile productions from the contemporary Stepping Out to the classic The Nutcracker, to the timeless tale of Cinderella. Under their direction the company’s season continues to expand and performances now reach over 20,000 annually in the Denver Metro area. The Boulder Ballet School (BBS) provides ballet training for all ages, pre-school through adult, in a uniquely artistic and creative atmosphere. As a professional-track ballet school, BBS challenges students dedicated to pursuing dance as a career but also welcomes those who dance purely for enjoyment. BBS focuses on ballet technique because it is a beautiful art in its own right and a strong base for many other styles of dance. Under the direction of Ana Claire since 1999, she has successfully recruited an outstanding faculty with international performing and teaching experience. The seven-level curriculum is designed to produce well-rounded artists who achieve not only technical proficiency but also an essential expressive quality in their dancing. To achieve this, the classical ballet technique is augmented with modern dance, character dance, and physical theater. Such comprehensive training prepares students for the many artistic challenges demanded of today’s professional dancers. Our students have excelled in a number of competitions, including the world’s largest, the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), where BBS students have won first-place awards and the regional Grand Prix (single highest award), and have been invited to perform in New York City among the world’s finest young dancers. Former BBS students have gone on to dance with world-class companies throughout the world including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet British Columbia, Hubbard Street Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group, Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, England’s Royal Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet, to name a few.

Boulder Ballet’s Commitment to Community Boulder Ballet has grown and flourished for more than thirty years on the Front Range; our roots are deep in Colorado. So, too, is our commitment to community through education and outreach programs. Our primary goal is to reach those students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience dance and movement. Since its inception more than a decade ago, Steps in Time remains a much-requested educational outreach program. Originally choreographed by Ana Claire, the assembly-format program seamlessly illustrates the history of ballet and its continuing influence on all forms of dance. Through beautiful choreography, humorous narration, and powerful dancing by our professional company, Steps in Time moves students beyond stereotypes and opens their eyes to the precision, expression, and athleticism of ballet. Each year this lively, interactive education program is presented to over 4,000 students in five different Front Range counties. In particular, Boulder Ballet reaches out to a large number of Title 1 schools—often with few arts resources—and students in free/reduced lunch programs. For many of these children, it is their first exposure to ballet, and they love it. Boulder Ballet’s artist-in-residence program for elementary schools, Poetry of Motion, features a Boulder Ballet instructor in residence at the school for up to two weeks. This program is designed to make a long-lasting impact on the minds and hearts of the students through the integration of dance and movement into the school’s curriculum. Poetry of Motion is focused on teaching students the value of creative expression without judgment. Through the integration of dance and movement, the program inspires confidence in creative expression, joy in collaborating with others, and passion for interpretive dramatic art, all based around state standards for Physical Education. Using fun exercises and games, students explore the realm of bodies in motion and imaginative expression. The model is group-oriented and playful. The cumulative effect of immersion over a two-week period builds students’ skills and confidence. Piloted in 2015, Boulder Ballet brings a four-day in-school residency to the middle school level. The middle school program builds on past participation in the elementary program and introduces a cross-disciplinary element that directly links earth science, physical education, and arts curricula. The mission of the middle school program focuses on the 3 C’s: building community, developing students’ skills directly related to their school curriculum, and fostering creativity through dance, health, and fitness. Boulder Ballet is equally committed to the successful community outreach programs Nutcracker Preview Night and Ballet in the Park. Since 2005, we have reached over 16,000 underserved individuals who are frequently excluded from exposure to the performing arts. These two programs were specifically designed to remove the financial barrier to participation. For our Nutcracker Preview Night performance, Boulder Ballet works with key social-service organizations to distribute free tickets to the full-scale final dress rehearsal of The Nutcracker in collaboration with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. Our free, outdoor summer concert series, Ballet in the Park, also reaches out to low-income families, teens in crisis, struggling single parents, and seniors on fixed incomes as well as the community at large in an effort to make the arts accessible to all.

Our Nutcracker Story ACT ONE It’s Christmas Eve and a young girl, Clara, is put to bed by her parents. Quickly asleep, she dreams she is at a festive Christmas Eve party surrounded by family and friends. Clara’s uncle, the mysterious Drosselmeyer, arrives and entertains the children with magic tricks, juggling, and life-size dancing dolls. He gives Clara a nutcracker doll that she adores, but her brother Fritz is envious and steals it, tripping and breaking it. Drosselmeyer quickly mends it with his magic handkerchief. Midnight strikes and strange things begin to happen. Human-sized mice dart through the shadows, the Christmas tree grows to astounding heights, and huge rats appear led by the fearsome Rat King. Then toy soldiers and the Nutcracker (now life-size) march in to protect Clara and engage the rats in a fierce battle. When the Rat King knocks the Nutcracker to the floor, Clara takes her shoe and strikes a fatal blow to the Rat King’s head. The battle over, Clara finds herself in a snow-covered forest and discovers that she has become a young woman. Then she sees that the Nutcracker, recovering from the battle, is now a handsome prince. They embark together on a journey through a snow-covered forest with dancing snowflakes and frost.

ACT TWO Continuing to dream, Clara and her Nutcracker Prince are led by Drosselmeyer through the realm of angels, who escort them to the Land of Sweets. They are welcomed by dignitaries and are presented to the Sugar Plum Fairy. She asks how her visitors won admission to her land, and the Prince reenacts the battle with the Rat King including Clara’s heroic rescue. The people of the Land of Sweets rejoice over the victory and award Clara a crown and the key to their kingdom. The Sugar Plum Fairy delights Clara and her Prince with a tour of the Land of Sweets. Dancers from Spain, Arabia, China, Italy, and Russia entertain the visitors. The Marzipans dance to the music of reed flutes. Then a larger-than-life Mother Ginger, her baker’s dozen of gingerbread cookies, and the Sugar Plum Fairy herself perform for the guests. Finally, the Dew Drop Fairy and her flower garden dance in the Waltz of the Flowers. Clara awakens from her dream, once more a little girl, finding the Nutcracker doll in her bed. With Drosselmeyer still in her mind, she wonders whether it was all a dream…or is this a dream yet to come?

From the Artistic Director Welcome to our 2016/2017 season! The Boulder Ballet company and school are off and happily leaping through the days! We are excited to be under way and invite you to join us as the season unfolds. Our returning company dancers are Kelsey Byrne, Rania Charalambidou, Melissa Heslep, Martin Gonzalo Justo Bernardez, Lance Hardin, Matthew Helms, and Dionysios Mitsios. This year we welcome three new company members: Veronica Goldberg, Phoebe Magna, and Ryland Early. We are also introducing four apprentices: Kate Adams, Livia Diener, Alexis Greenberg, and Chelsea Vonu. The studios are filled with energy, music and laughter. Stop by and enjoy. We perform The Nutcracker in November at Macky Auditorium with the Boulder Philharmonic and in December at Vance Brand Civic Auditorium with the Longmont Symphony. Our contemporary showcase Stepping Out is in February in the Gordon Gamm Theater in The Dairy ARTS Center. The show will feature Robert North’s fanciful Light Fandango as well as new works from Associate Artistic Director Lance Hardin, Assistant School Director Amy Earnest, and me. For Mother’s Day we are performing Two Witches & A Prince, a fairytale mash-up with an original piano score composed for the ballet by Brian Golden. Keep your eyes open, and you may see our company dancers rocking to Billy Joel center stage at a CU basketball game, dancing at the Boulder library in celebration of the arts, or waltzing the evening away at the Governor’s Residence to mark Valentine’s Day. The Boulder Ballet School students are in full swing now too. Our most advanced dancers have the opportunity to participate in two performance competitions: Denver Ballet Guild’s Young Dancers Competition and Youth America Grand Prix, both in March. Coaching is well under way and we wish the students good luck. Our Storybook Ballet, also in March, will be The Wizard of Oz. Be sure to come and celebrate the joy of making magic out of a favorite book, music, and dance. In May, our young aspiring choreographers will take the stage for our annual Choreographer’s Showcase. It’s always fun to see their creativity. Then we present BB2, a showcase for our advanced students to present their competition solos, some contemporary pieces, and excerpts from La Fille Mal Gardée. Artistic Directors ANA CLAIRE (Artistic Director) Ana is the Artistic Director of the Boulder Ballet. Although born in Boulder, Ana grew up on a ranch near Fairplay, Colorado. At the age of eight she saw American Ballet Theatre perform Swan Lake and fell in love with the art of ballet. In an extraordinary gift of support, Ana’s mother drove her to ballet classes in Denver throughout her childhood. Ana has studied ballet with Maxine Williamson, Fernando Schaffenberg, Milenko Banovich, Barbara Demaree, and Larry Boyette. She has performed with Fort Worth Ballet, Fort Worth Opera, David Taylor Dance Theater, Aladdin Theater, Boulder’s Dinner Theatre, Jan Justis Dance Company, and 3rd Law Dance/Theater, among others. Ana was a principal ballerina with Boulder Ballet for many years, and was twice voted “Boulder’s Best” by the Daily Camera. For over 20 years she has produced, directed, and choreographed an annual Storybook Ballet for the Boulder Ballet School, each with original music, scenery, and costumes created in collaboration with local artists. She has also choreographed all productions of Boulder Ballet’s Nutcracker since 2001. Ana originated Boulder Ballet’s acclaimed outreach program Steps in Time which has been performed at numerous schools throughout the Boulder/Denver area. Ana studied dance pedagogy at Texas Christian University, attended the teacher training workshop with former New York City Ballet principal Jillana, and has over 27 years of teaching experience. She is a passionate teacher, dedicated to helping students achieve technical excellence while nurturing their individual artistry, and many of her students have gone on to professional careers in dance.

LANCE HARDIN (Associate Artistic Director) Lance Hardin is a native of Chicago, where he received his training from Larry Long at the Ruth Page Foundation School of Dance. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Ballet from Indiana University, where he studied under the direction of Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, Patricia McBride, Jacques Cesbron, and Violette Verdy. As a professional dancer, Mr. Hardin has danced with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, North Carolina Dance Theatre (currently Charlotte Ballet), Chautauqua Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet Nouveau Colorado, Boulder Ballet, Springfield Ballet Company, and the Yoko Kasai Ballet Studio located in Japan. He has performed principal roles by world renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine (Allegro Brilliante, Four Temperaments, Western Symphony, Who Cares), Paul Taylor (Esplanade, Company B), Dwight Rhoden (Verge), Nacho Duato (Jardi Tancat), William Forsythe (In the Middle Somewhat Elevated), Michael Pink (Romeo and Juliet), and Alonzo King (Map). Presently, Lance is enjoying many requests as guest artist, teacher, and choreographer. Mr. Hardin has taught dance for the past 23 years and holds numerous choreographic credits including The Denver Independent Choreographer’s Project, Springfield Ballet Company, Boulder Ballet and Fractured a collaboration with his wife Amy Earnest for James Sewell Ballet. Lance and Amy served as Co-Dance Directors at The Myles Reif Performing Arts Center in MN prior to joining Boulder Ballet.

Company Dancers KELSEY BYRNE is from Orange County, California, where she received her training at the Orange County High School of the Arts as a member of the Classical and Contemporary Dance Department. She also received training during summer intensives at the Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet, and Alonzo King LINES. She graduated from Indiana University in 2015 as a ballet major in the Jacobs School of Music. At IU, she had the opportunity to perform a variety of Balanchine works, namely The Four Temperaments, Western Symphony, Emeralds, and Swan Lake, as well as classics such as La Bayadere and Michael Vernon’s adaptation of The Nutcracker. This is Kelsey’s second season with Boulder Ballet. RANIA CHARALAMBIDOU is from Nicosia, Cyprus. She attended Jacksonville University, where she was awarded the Outstanding Freshman and Sophomore awards by the Dance Department. She graduated Magnum Cum Laude with a BA in Dance Education and a Math minor from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. She trained at the Joffrey Ballet School and with Elena Kunikova at Steps on Broadway. Rania has been a company member with Sarasota Ballet, Columbia City Ballet, Ballet San Antonio and currently with Boulder Ballet. She has danced soloist and principal parts such as Adult Clara and Arabian Pas De Deux in the Nutcracker, Princess Vasilissa in Firebird, Lead Bride in Dracula, Summer Fairy in Cinderella, Scheherazade in Scheherazade, Beauty Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty, The Assistant in Matthew Bourne’s Boutique etc. In 2009, Rania performed with the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Susan Stroman’s Tony-Award winning musical Contact as Trouble. Rania guest performed with a number of companies such as San Angelo Ballet, San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet, Diesel | Fusion Dance Theater, Dance Cyprus, Amfithdromo Chorotheatro, Florida Ballet, Freespace Dance etc. She also performed in the 50th anniversary celebration of the independence of Cyprus in 2010. Rania is the co-owner of Long Body Yoga and 35° 33° Dance Company in Cyprus. This is Rania’s second season with Boulder Ballet. CLAIRE DAVISON (Guest Artist courtesy of American Ballet Theatre) was born in Boulder, Colorado. Davison received her initial ballet training at the Boulder Ballet School on full scholarship. She attended the Boston Ballet School, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, School of American Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet School summer programs on scholarship. Davison was awarded third place at the Denver Ballet Guild Young Dancer’s Competition and was a finalist at the Youth American Grand Prix competition in New York City in 2009. Davison was recognized as an international Young Medalist and performed at the International Ballet Festival of Miami. She joined the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre in 2010 and received the Ron and Toby Altman scholarship at that time. Davison joined ABT as an apprentice in November 2012 and became a member of the corps de ballet in June 2013. PETER DAVISON (Guest Artist, former Boulder Ballet Co-Artistic Director) began his career as a teenage juggler, street performing in his home town of Los Angeles. In 1979, at the age of 18, he was cast as a white-faced juggler in the movie “Xanadu” with Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. In 1982 Peter won first place at the National Juggling Championships, and became a founding member of the Boulder-based juggling/dance/theater trio Airjazz, which appeared at venues such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, New Zealand International Arts Festival, BAM, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. His TV appearances include “Harry Anderson—The Tricks of His Trade” (CBS), “The Paul Daniels Show” (BBC), and “30-Seconds to Fame” (Fox). Also a choreographer, Peter won the 2009 Ballet Builders Award from New Choreographers on Pointe in New York, and his works have been performed by Boulder Ballet, Ballet Nouveau Colorado, Saint Paul Ballet, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and others. Peter was Co-Artistic Director at Boulder Ballet from 2004 to 2015 prior to re-focusing on his movement work with objects. RYLAND EARLY, a Boulder native, has danced for Ballet West, Ballet Arizona, Nevada Ballet Theater, and most recently Phoenix Ballet under the direction of Slawomir Wozniak. He has enjoyed performing the works of Stanton Welch, George Balanchine, Amy Seiwert, and Robert Dekkers throughout his career, as well as dancing classical roles such as Albrecht in Gisele, Von Rothbart in Swan Lake, and the Prince in Sleeping Beauty. This is Ryland’s first season with Boulder Ballet. VERONICA GOLDBERG is from Buffalo, New York, where she received her training at The Neglia Conservatory of Ballet and Center Stage Dance Studio. Veronica continued her training at Point Park University, where she graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance as well as a minor in Psychology. There, she had the opportunity to perform in George Balanchine’s Serenade, Ben Stevenson’s End of Time, and Nicolas Petrov’s Romeo and Juliet as Juliet. After graduating, she went on to work with City Ballet of San Diego for two seasons under the direction of Steven and Betsey Wistrich. During her time in San Diego, Veronica had the opportunity to perform inMozart’s Requiem, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, and George Balanchine’s Emeralds, The Four Temperaments, and Walpurgisnacht. This is Veronica’s first season with Boulder Ballet. MARTIN GONZALO JUSTO BERNARDEZ is from Caracas, Venezuela, and began dancing in 1999. He trained with Quinte Ballet School in Canada and School of Carolina Ballet Theatre. He has toured throughout Uruguay with CBT and has recently traveled and performed as a guest in Fujinomia, Japan, dancing pas de deux from Giselle, La Bayadere, and Swan Lake. Some of his signature roles are the charming young Nutcracker Prince in Hernan Justo’sThe Nutcracker, the Mad Scientist in Madeline Jazz’s Super Heroes, and the male soloist in A Tango for Angelina. While dancing with CBT, Martin performed works by renowned contemporary choreographers such as Dwight Rhoden’s Beatle Juice, and Alonzo King’s Map. This is Martin’s second season with Boulder Ballet. MATTHEW HELMS began his training in Colorado on full scholarship at the Academy of Classical Ballet, where he danced principal roles in The Nutcracker, Giselle and Le Corsaire. He then studied on full scholarship with Mark and Sandra Carlson and German Zamuel at the International Ballet School where he performed soloist roles in The Nutcracker and Peter Pan. Matthew competed in the 2008 Youth America Grand Prix and the 2008 Denver Ballet Guild Competition where he received a full scholarship to The Ballet West Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Matthew has been a guest artist with ballet companies in Utah, California, and Idaho, and for the last three years has performed leading roles in ballets such as The Nutcracker, Paquita, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, and Le Corsaire. He choreographed a contemporary ballet that was premiered in

Company Dancers the Ballet West Academy Spring show in 2009. Matthew was promoted to the Ballet West Pre-Professional Trainee Program in 2010 and has trained with artists from American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Joffrey Ballet, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Kirov Ballet and David Taylor Dance Theater. Matthew has studied martial arts since age three, has been acting since age four, and has appeared in movies, commercials and TV shows as an actor or a fight choreographer. This is Matthew’s sixth season with Boulder Ballet. MELISSA HESLEP received her training at the School of Orlando City Ballet for 13 years under the direction of Beatrix Aldana and spent her summers training with teachers including Luba Gulyaeva, Mark Spivak, Valeria Sinyavakaya, and Veronica Aldana. She performed with the student company until 2001, and upon graduation was accepted into the 2002 Youth America Grand Prix finals in New York City. In Orlando, she performed with Russian Ballet under the direction of Vadim Fedotov and has spent the last five seasons with Central Florida Ballet under the direction of Vasile Petrutiu. She has also had the opportunity to travel as a guest artist for many venues in the United States. Her repertoire includes classics such as The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and The Nutcracker, and contemporary works. This is Melissa’s sixth season with Boulder Ballet. PHOEBE MAGNA was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and began her training with The Hartt School Dance Department, formerly the School of the Hartford Ballet, under the direction of Susan Brooker and Miguel Campaneria. In 2010, she continued her studies at the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts under Victoria Mazzarelli, Kirk Peterson, Eleanor D’Antuono, and Tim Melady. After graduation in 2013, Phoebe joined the Colorado Ballet Studio Company for two seasons where she performed in their production of Giselle, Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, Christopher Wheeldon’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Michael Pink’s Dracula and Colorado Ballet’s The Nutcracker. Phoebe was invited to join City Ballet of San Diego for their 2015/2016 season where she had the opportunity to perform in Mozart’s Requiem, The Nutcracker, George Balanchine’s Emeralds, and Romeo and Juliet. This is Phoebe’s first season with Boulder Ballet. DIONYSIOS MITSIOS was raised in Jacksonville, FL by Greek parents. He attended Jacksonville University where he graduated Magnum cum Laude with departmental honors in Dance and Magnum cum Laude in Computer Information Systems. While in school he was awarded the Dance Management, Most Improved Dancer, and Dance Contribution Awards. During college, he also studied on scholarship at Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory, where he received the Service Award. At Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory, he had the opportunity to work with Moses Pendelton of Momix. His class at Nutmeg was used to choreograph Lunar Sea for Moses Pendelton, which is now touring for Momix. Upon graduation he began performing professionally. He has been fortunate to perform with Florida Ballet, Charleston Ballet Theatre, HT Chen & Dancers, Busch Gardens, Ballet Revelle, Columbia City Ballet, Ballet San Antonio, and now Boulder Ballet. Danny has also been a guest performer with many organizations such as Ovations Dance Repertory Company, Freespace Dance, Equilateral Theater, Connecticut Dance Theatre, San Angelo Civic Ballet, San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet, and Skien Cultural Center in Norway. In addition to a dance career Danny is also co-owner of Long Body Yoga, TheGreatestWebAndGraphics.com, and 35° 33° Dance Company in Cyprus. Music Director and Conductor MICHAEL BUTTERMAN, Boulder Phil Music Director Making his mark as a model for today’s conductors, Michael Butterman is recognized for his commitment to creative artistry, innovative programming, and to audience and community engagement. He serves as Music Director for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he will appear at the Kennedy Center’s inaugural SHIFT Festival in 2017. He is also the Music Director of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and the Pennsylvania Philharmonic. In addition, he is in his 17th season as Principal Conductor for Education and Community Engagement for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and just completed a 15-year tenure with the Jacksonville Symphony, first as Associate, and then as Resident Conductor. As a guest conductor, Mr. Butterman has led many of the country’s preeminent ensembles, including the Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony, Detroit Symphony and Houston Symphony. In the 16-17 season, he will return to conduct the National Symphony for three weeks of concerts at the Kennedy Center, as well as to conduct Canada’s Victoria Symphony in the fall. Other recent appearances include performances with the Colorado Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, Charleston Symphony, Hartford Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Syracuse Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, Santa Fe Symphony, California Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Spokane Symphony, El Paso Symphony, Mobile Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, Pensacola Opera, Asheville Lyric Opera and Victoria Symphony (British Columbia). Summer appearances include Tanglewood, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and the Wintergreen Music Festival in Virginia. Mr. Butterman gained international attention as a diploma laureate in the Prokofiev International Conducting Competition and as a finalist in the prestigious Besançon International Conducting Competition. As the recipient of the Seiji Ozawa Fellowship, he studied at Tanglewood with Robert Spano, Jorma Panula, and Maestro Ozawa, and shared the podium with Ozawa to lead the season’s opening concert. GARY LEWIS, Boulder Phil Principal Guest Conductor Gary Lewis is the Director of Orchestras and Professor of Music in the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he conducts the University Symphony Orchestra and oversees the entire orchestra program. At CU-Boulder Mr. Lewis also leads the graduate program in orchestral conducting including both the masters and doctoral level. Mr. Lewis serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Boulder Philharmonic and Music Director and Conductor of the Midland-Odessa (TX) Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Music Festival, Midland Ballet Theater, Ballet Lubbock, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Abilene Symphony Orchestra, the Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra, the New Symphony Orchestra (Sofia, Bulgaria), and the Western Plains Opera Theater. Gary Lewis is a Yamaha Master Educator. As a strong advocate of music education, Mr. Lewis has presented many in-service workshops for public school educators, as well as numerous presentations at state and regional music education association conferences. In addition, he has conducted All-State Orchestras and Bands in many states along with the ASTA National Honor Orchestra and the Honor Orchestra of America. In 2010 Mr. Lewis became the founding Artistic Director of the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras and served as conductor of the Symphony Orchestra until 2016.

March to DC with the Boulder Phil The Boulder Phil is honored to be one of only four orchestras selected to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, in March 2017. The concert is part of the inaugural SHIFT Festival, which celebrates orchestras that have demonstrated artistry, creativity and excellence in civic engagement. Following our Kick-Off Concert in Boulder on March 25, we will repeat our “Nature & Music” program at the Kennedy Center on Tuesday, March 28 with special guests, Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance. Other DC residency activities include musical hikes in Rock Creek Park led by naturalist Dave Sutherland from Boulder’s Open Space & Mountain Parks and “stroll-to” outdoor performances by Boulder Phil ensembles during the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
