Boulder Ballet has been captivating Boulder audiences for 43 years with its dedication to celebrating the artistry, passion, and joy of dance. As Boulder County’s foremost professional dance company and ballet school, Boulder Ballet believes that dance offers a life-altering impact on those who engage with its expressive depth and experience its transformative power.
Since its founding, the professional company has been led by several notable former dancers, including: Miljenko Banovic (formerly of Zagreb Ballet), Robin Haig (formerly of the Royal Ballet), John Prinz (formerly of American Ballet Theatre), Peter Davison, Ana Claire, and Lance Hardin.
Boulder Ballet’s origins trace back to the Ballet Arts Studios, founded in Denver and Boulder by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette in the 1970s. In 1981, Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney purchased the Boulder studio, and the following year, they established the first performing company, initially known as Boulder City Ballet. The organization adopted its current name, Boulder Ballet, in 1995 and is proud to continue contributing to the cultural landscape of the Boulder community and beyond.

Thank you so much for joining us as we celebrate the holidays with Boulder Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker! While this is one of the most famous ballets in the world, many people may not know that there are many different versions of this production. Based on Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 short story, the full-length ballet score was created by Tchaikovsky in 1892 with choreography by Marius Petipa. About half a century later (1944) choreographer William Christensen created the first American version for the San Francisco Ballet, but it wasn’t until George Balanchine’s 1954 version that it became a holiday tradition in the United States. Now nearly every ballet company across the country has its own version offering something new and different for audiences wherever they choose to see it.
Our Nutcracker here in Boulder is rooted in the original score composed by Tchaikovsky, which follows the young Clara as she dreams about a magical kingdom with desserts from all across the world. We have drawn inspiration from the textures and delights of these desserts - chocolate, coffee, tea, marzipan, and more - and created a version that embodies those qualities within the athleticism of our world-class artists. We annually adapt each dance to showcase the unique strength of our company dancers, and to create opportunities for as many members of our Boulder Ballet School to participate in the magic. It is a massive undertaking for our small staff to produce, for sure, but all of us are so proud to be part of an
experience that has been bringing genuine joy and warmth to this community for more than 40 years.
Our theme for the professional company this season is “Refined REDEFINED” and this year’s production of The Nutcracker is a perfect example of that in action. We have invested more rehearsal time to refine the exquisite quality of our performers, and we finessed the details in the choreography to elevate the precision and impact of each moment. We hope that when you see these performers in action it will redefine how you perceive classical ballet, highlighting the beauty of human connection in a way that only the performing arts can embody. The act of refining and redefining is central in the process of personal growth, and I am so proud of how the artists of the Boulder Ballet have taken this theme to heart. These are some truly special people, both on stage and off, and I hope that your time here with us allows you to feel that magic and carry it with you through your holidays and beyond.

The Stahlbaum family gathers for their annual Christmas Eve party, inviting friends and family to share in the celebration. Their young daughter, Clara, is brimming with excitement for the festivities to come. Guests arrive and the night is filled with joyful dancing, delicious desserts, and Uncle Drosselmeyer’s enchanting magic. Clara’s heart swells with delight when she is gifted a Nutcracker doll. However, her joy is short-lived when the Nutcracker accidentally breaks. Thankfully, Uncle Drosselmeyer works his magic and mends the Nutcracker. As the night’s revelry comes to an end, Clara drifts to sleep with the anticipation of Christmas morning and begins to dream...
The clock strikes midnight and the ordinary turns extraordinary. An army of mice and rats, led by the fearsome Rat King, emerges. Clara finds herself caught in a surreal struggle, with her beloved Nutcracker springing to life to defend her. He rallies an army of toy soldiers to battle the Rat King. Just as the Rat King seems to get the upper hand, Clara summons her courage and, with a determined thud, topples the Rat King, saving her valiant Nutcracker. The mice and soldiers begin to fade away, and the Nutcracker magically transforms into a dashing prince, leading Clara on a magical odyssey through a snow-draped forest.
As Act 2 begins, Clara and the Nutcracker adventure through the ethereal realm of the angels, and ultimately arrive in the enchanting Land of the Sweets. They are greeted by Uncle Drosselmeyer who introduces them to the gracious Sugar Plum Fairy and her gallant Cavalier. The Land’s band of players recount the valiant battle against the Rat King, and in honor of Clara’s heroism the Sugar Plum Fairy orchestrates a joyous celebration. A medley of captivating dances representing Chocolate, Coffee, Marzipan, and other worldly delights perform for Clara. Eventually it is time for Clara to return home, so she and the Nutcracker wave goodbye.
Clara drifts back to her own bed, the memory of the sweets lingering and filling her with joy. Though it was just a dream, it was a truly spectacular adventure.

In addition, he has conducted All-State Orchestras and Bands in many states along with the ASTA National Honor Orchestra and the Honor Orchestra of America. In 2010 Mr. Lewis became the founding Artistic Director of the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras and continues to serve as conductor of the Symphony Orchestra..
Mr. Lewis is also a strong proponent of new music. He has been instrumental in the development and production of contemporary music festivals and his interest in new music has led him to collaborations with composers such as Dan Kellogg, Carter Pann, George Crumb, William Bolcom, John Harbison, Chen Yi, Michael Daugherty, Stephen Paulus, and many others.
Mr. Lewis is a Yamaha Master Educator.
