DCPA EDUCATION PREPARES STUDENTS FOR DPS SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

It was April 24, and the Arts Complex was packed with witches, queens, kings, capes, and pantaloons.
The students from my school, Polaris Elementary? Instead of Elizabethan costumes, our fourth and fifth-graders were dressed in a modern take. They were among more than 5,000 elementary, middle and high school students who performed at the 42nd annual Denver Public Schools’ Shakespeare Festival.
Students devoted each Monday afternoon since November, and an hour each Friday since February, not just rehearsing Julius Caesar, but also learning what it meant to be part of a company of actors. This time, they weren’t going it alone. In addition to our music and drama teacher, Corrilee Kielmeyer, and me as her assistant, we were benefiting from the acumen of the DCPA’s Director of Education and Curriculum Development, Sam Wood. He led lessons in language, character, stage combat, and blocking.
Early in December, Sam made his first visit, introducing students to the building blocks of Shakespearean language. He returned in January for character work, where he delivered his opening instructions: “I’ll give you a prompt, and you’ll immediately go make it. I’m going to call ‘Julius Caesar,’ and you’ll go stand like a colossus.”
Sure enough, four-foot Zoe suddenly stood astride the auditorium like a colossus — a power she brought to the stage four months later as Brutus.
“Show me that you are super bored,” Sam instructs. Shoulders slumped, eyes glazed, no one made eye contact. “Shakespeare gives you really great lines that can help you find the character: ‘Friends, Romans, Countrymen.’”
Teagan took a try, spreading their hands like an orator.
A month later, Sam returned to teach stage combat and wrote two column headings on the whiteboard: Safety. Consent. “There’s a moment before the movement starts where you look your partner in the eye, and there’s a nonverbal consent that they’re ready to go,” Sam says. Soon, they learned to twist an arm without really twisting it, and to stab safely, backs turned to conceal the non-penetrating blade.
By March, the play was cast and lines were rehearsed, which required a lot of outside dedication to commit the words to memory.
Sam attended the preview, after which he returned detailed, yet encouraging feedback. Valentina, who barely spoke with a whisper in fourth grade, was back this year loud, clear and with intention while India, a delicate ballerina, delivered a blistering tirade in the final scene.
They were ready to take their bows.

FABULOUS AT TITUDE HATTITUDE Luncheon
Nearly 600 beautifully bedecked individuals brought their spring attitude to the DCPA’s annual Hattitude luncheon on April 30. The event, which began in 2005 to benefit plays written and directed by women, was sponsored by Lynnette Morrison, Elizabeth Hioe, Emily Mrig, Gallagher, Adrienne Ruston Fitzgibbons, Carol Hamer, Mariel Boutique, and Judi Newman.
The day included a pre-show VIP reception, lunch by Serendipity Catering in the Seawell Ballroom, and entertainment by on-stage and real-life couple, Marco Alberto Robinson and Adriane Leigh Robinson who recently starred in Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors. Despite the chilly spring day, the boisterous crowd warmly cheered on representatives from each table who were selected to participate in the event’s signature element — the Parade of Hats. WEAVING A SPELL OF FRIENDSHIP

OOn a dreary spring morning in St. Louis, actors Adam Grant Morrison and David Fine are talking about their pivotal roles in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s national tour, now in its second year. Morrison mentions a scene in which his and Fine’s characters — Albus Severus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy, respectively — have a very prickly moment. “They get in each other’s faces,” he shares.
That there are tensions between the two likely won’t come as a surprise. Those familiar with the surnames might even imagine a wand-wielding Hatfield and McCoy faceoff. After all, one is the middle child of author J.K. Rowling’s famous, if no-longer-a-boy wizard, Harry Potter; the other is the son of the infamous Draco Malfoy, the one-time bully at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Now their sons attend the same storied school. Yet, Albus and Scorpius’ clash isn’t that of nemeses. Instead, it is steeped with the kind of hurt feelings and frustrations that so often accompany a deep friendship. That these two lads — so uncomfortable with the weight of their family names — build a bond amid the cliques and Houses at the hallowed school rankles their fathers, especially the dad of the title.
The winner of six Tonys, including Best Play, Cursed Child arrives to Denver having been heralded for its jaw-dropping illusions and rich design but also for its heart-centered drama. For all the death and darkness — of which there are plenty, thanks to the malevolent Lord Voldemort — persistent amity has been the saga’s boon and beacon.
“Come for the magic. Stay for the friendship” might well have been the motto for the Harry Potter series from the start. For nearly two decades, readers and moviegoers witnessed the titular orphan and his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermoine Granger, navigate the challenges, youthful blunders, and copious wonders of Hogwarts.
(In December, HBO will reboot the story, returning to the book that began it all, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.)
The play’s author, Jack Thorne, resonated with the ways the young Harry P was a hero but also, fundamentally, an odd kid out. “I really wanted to get into what’s it like at Hogwarts when you don’t fit in,” he wrote in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: The Journey, about embarking on a play that carries the spirit of the series. (Rowling, along with Thorne and director John Tiffany, shaped this work).
“One of the first conversations Jo and I had was about the fact that we both found school excruciating. I said I thought that ten or eleven was the age I realized it was possible I might not have any friends.”
So, Thorne devised a rich connection, one that addresses fathers and sons, generational trauma and grief, but also embraces the enduring fondness of friends and the awkward aches of youth. When the boys meet — in much the way Harry met his own dearest friends — on the Hogwarts Express, something is set in motion.
“I think the relationship between Albus and Scorpius is one of the most important parts of the entire show. It’s a catalyst,” Morrison says. “When the two meet, they immediately understand that there’s a connection, that there’s

already a bond that’s been formed, whether or not there should have been because of the whole family differences.”
A life preserver of the first order, friendship has had its impressive champions: from Charlotte Brontë to Maya Angelou, Aristotle to Whodini. (“Friends. How many of us have them,” indeed.) Rowling contributed her own oft quoted insight on the matter when she wrote in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” It’s an insight that gets us back to Albus and Scorpius and their portrayers, Morrison and Fine.

“Albus is young. He’s a teenager — which is a very hard thing to be,” Morrison says. “And a lot of the ways that he grows happen because of Scorpius,” he continues. “I feel like understanding Scorpius helps him understand the world better.”
Scorpius is a surprisingly kind soul. “Their relationship is so relatable and human because you get to see them figuring out how to be better friends to one another,” says Fine. “Scorpius and Albus are wizards, but they’re also teenagers, like Adam is saying. You do get to see them struggle and learn how to better support one another.”
Fine has been with the tour since its launch, Morrison joined on its second iteration. Given their charming interplay this spring morning, it’s easy to see they’ve become friends on the road.
“The demands are constant,” says Fine of touring. “It’s basically your whole life. You’ve packed up, you’ve gone on the road, and you have this community of people that you travel with. But you really sort of exist in a little bubble and every day, there’s a new challenge it seems.” Not that Fine is complaining. “The exciting part is getting to work together to overcome them.”
Ah, theater. It has so often provided — and continues to — the hallowed space where the gifted, the curious, the self-identifying misfits seek and find their people. And once they do, they go about the business of making all manner of magic. Sound familiar?

HARRY POTTER THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS LTD (Producer) was founded by J.K. Rowling and Neil Blair in 2013 to develop and produce the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany. The team from Harry Potter Theatrical Productions Ltd has worked closely with Sonia Friedman Productions and Colin Callender’s Playground to produce the play, and also in controlling the international rights for the production.
NEIL BLAIR (Producer) is J.K. Rowling’s agent, chairman of Pottermore and co-founder of entertainment agency, The Blair Partnership. With over 25 years of collaboration, Neil’s been integral in managing J.K. Rowling’s literary, entertainment and brand endeavours. Previously, Neil served as VP and Head of Business Affairs, Europe at Warner Bros. Neil co-produced Harry Potter and the Cursed Child through Harry Potter Theatrical Productions and for many years chaired Lumos, J.K. Rowling’s international children’s charity.
