For those of us who love the theatre, it is common to share memories of our favorite shows or theatrical experiences with each other. Here in Denver, a commonly shared favorite memory (for those who have been here awhile) is that of seeing The Phantom of the Opera for the first time in 1991 when it debuted at the newly completed Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre. That was 25 years ago. Today in 2016 I am pleased to welcome the spectacular new production to The Buell Theatre for its seventh Denver engagement, now with an all new production never before seen by Denver audiences.

Phantom kicks off our 2016/17 Broadway season in grand style.

The season ahead proves to be an inspiring, emotional and transforming selection of shows — enduring favorites and inventive new productions direct from Broadway. Over the next year we will present 15 different Broadway titles plus a selection of imaginative new shows making their Colorado debut. But that’s not all…capping it all off in the summer of 2017, the DCPA will host the exciting pre-Broadway engagement of Frozen, the brand new Disney musical that will make its premiere at the Buell before opening on Broadway in spring 2018. As with Disney’s The Little Mermaid in 2007, Denver audiences will get the first opportunity to experience this spectacular new work before it makes its way to New York audiences on Broadway. I, for one, can’t wait to see what the amazingly talented creative team behind this production brings to life on stage.

Looking beyond this season, the DCPA is delighted to announce that the smash hit Hamilton will be coming to Denver as part of the 2017/18 Broadway subscription season. Hamilton, winner of 11 Tony Awards, is the story of Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers told by a talented cast of diverse performers through the musical language of hip hop, jazz, blues, rap and R&B. Subscribers to the 2017/18 Broadway season will receive tickets to this fantastic show (as well as many others!) as part of their package. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

The Buell Theatre was built, in large part, to host the national touring production of The Phantom of the Opera in 1991. And after that grand party, cynics and critics alike predicted it would surely stand empty. Instead, a quartercentury later, it ranks as the nation’s highest-grossing theatre under 3,000 seats.

Plans were already underway to convert the dilapidated old basketball arena into “The Buell” in 1990 when the late, legendary Denver theatre producer Robert Garner got a call from British producers Alan Wasser and Sir Cameron Mackintosh.

“They said we could have the first national touring production of The Phantom of the Opera — if Denver had a theater that could hold it,” Garner said in a 2011 interview.

That would mean massive upgrades to the Buell’s planned backstage area, in effect forcing the city to commit to building a major, state-of-the-art Broadway roadhouse.

At a cost of $40 million.

“And right up to the end, we were not sure it was going to be ready to open on time,” Garner said. “But contracts were signed, and we were on the hook no matter what.”

The 10-week Phantom run christened the 2,830-seat Buell and drew 224,393 patrons, generating $11 million in ticket sales and making an estimated $44 million economic impact.

It was later determined that 21 percent of the audience came to Colorado to see the show from 43 states. In a letter to the Rocky Mountain News, Denver resident Dick Moore claimed to have seen the show 25 times during the run. The top ticket price was $60.

It was, Denver Post critic Jeff Bradley wrote at the time, “the most successful theatrical event in Denver history.”

Since then the Buell, named after Denver architect and philanthropist Temple Hoyne Buell, has served more than

13 million patrons. It launched notable touring productions of Sunset Boulevard, The Lion King and The Book of Mormon.

It has hosted comedians like Jerry Seinfeld; speakers such as Madeleine Albright, Laura Bush and Queen Noor of Jordan; and hip musicians including Nick Cave and Ray LaMontagne.

The Buell has hosted innumerable graduations, funerals — and even an original stage comedy written by Tyler Perry.

But the Buell is primarily home to Broadway musicals such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, which returns this summer in an updated production with new scenery, lighting, staging and choreography. This engagement will be the show’s seventh visit to the Buell.

Over the 25 years, dozens of budding Broadway stars from Annaleigh Ashford to Andy Kelso to Sierra Boggess (who has played Christine Daaé in both The Phantom of the Opera and Webber’s 2010 sequel, Love Never Dies) decided they wanted to be actors due to the inspiring shows they watched on the Buell stage.

Few would know now that the Buell spent much of its previous life as the rowdy, rickety and raucous Denver Municipal Auditorium Arena, the city’s home for concerts, basketball, tennis, volleyball and professional wrestling.

Garner used the arena to promote concerts by Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Joni Mitchell, David Cassidy and Neil Diamond. “But professional wrestling was king,” he said.

“There were matches there every two weeks.”

The Auditorium Theatre, with its deco-inspired rounded corner at 13th and Champa streets, was originally built to host the 1908 Democratic National Convention. The space was divided in 1953. The 6,841-seat basketball arena made up the southwestern half of the building, while the other half housed the more culturally sophisticated Auditorium Theatre — now the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

Long before the Phantom brings down the chandelier in the Buell, spirits roamed the air above the Auditorium Arena. In 1975, the official mascot of the Indiana Pacers basketball team put a hex on the Denver Nuggets before their championship series. Team management countered by hiring a witch to remove the spell in a grand ceremony before the deciding game.

— ROBERT GARNER, DCPA BROADWAY FOUNDER On December 26, 1968, Led Zeppelin played its first U.S. concert at the Auditorium Arena. That same year, Eric Clapton played there with his band Cream. The opening act? A hypnotist!

But the Auditorium Arena was largely idle after the basketball team bolted for the fancy new McNichols Sports Arena in 1975. Fifteen years later, the fortuitous call came from Mackintosh that both accelerated and expanded the plan to turn the Buell into what remains one of the most successful Broadway touring facilities in the country.

Disney Theatricals chooses Denver to launch the national tour of The Lion King. More than 1,800 fans stand in line for tickets, and in all, 220,000 attend the 10-week run that infuses an estimated $58 million into Denver’s economy.

2004

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular tour draws 159,041 for 64 performances in 39 days.

2004

North High School becomes the first (and only) high school to stage a production at the Buell, The Zoot Suit Riots, drawing 2,100.

2007

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, a collaboration by the DCPA’s Theatre Company and Broadway divisions, draws 107,567.

2008

The Buell undergoes a $1.2 million upgrade in preparation for the Democratic National Convention.

2015

If/Then launches its tour in Denver and reunites the four original principals — Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp, LaChanze and James Snyder.

CABARET

At the dawn of the 1930s, when life grew grim and uncertain in pre-WWII Berlin, a seedy and sexy nightspot illuminates a decadent distraction. This is the setting for Cabaret, where patrons are encouraged to leave their troubles outside.

Led by its gender-bending Master of Ceremonies, The Kit Kat Klub stars Sally Bowles and the club’s singing, dancing and instrument-playing ensemble who tantalize the crowd through dangerous times.

While widely known for their Hollywood credits, Cabaret co-directors Sam Mendes (Spectre, Skyfall, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago) have theatre cred. Mendes has directed with England’s Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre while Marshall is a six-time Tony nominee for Kiss of the Spider Woman, Damn Yankees, Victor/Victoria and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum among others.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Composer/ Book/Co-Orchestrator) is the composer of some of the world’s best known musi-

cals including Cats, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera and Sunset Boulevard. His latest musical, the hit stage version of the movie School of Rock, is now playing at The Winter Garden Theatre. His awards, both as composer and producer, include seven Tonys, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, a BASCA Fellowship, the Kennedy Center Honor and a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, his setting of the Latin Requiem mass, which contains one of his best known compositions, “Pie Jesu.” He owns seven London theatres including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and the London Palladium.

He was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 1992 and created an honorary member of the House of Lords in 1997.

He is passionate about the importance of music in education and the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has become one of Britain’s leading charities supporting the arts and music.

CAMERON MACKINTOSH (Producer), for nearly 50 years, has been producing more musicals than anyone else in history, including the three longest-running musicals of all time: Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, and Cats.

His spectacular new production of Miss Saigon has just finished its hugely successful run at London’s Prince Edward Theatre and will open on Broadway in March 2017 whilst his co-production with Disney of Mary Poppins continues to sprinkle its magic around the world.

Other worldwide successes include Little Shop of Horrors, Side by Side by Sondheim, Five Guys Named Moe, The Witches of Eastwick and his re-inventions of Oliver! and My Fair Lady, as well as his new version of Half A Sixpence which opens at Chichester Festival Theatre this summer. Cameron, with Working Title and Universal, produced the hugely successful award-winning film version of Les Misérables and he is currently working on film versions of Oliver! and Miss Saigon.

He owns nine West End theatres: Prince of Wales, Gielgud, Queen’s, Wyndham’s, Noël Coward, Novello and Prince Edward, all of which have been spectacularly refurbished, and subject to obtaining planning consent to remodel the interior, The Ambassadors Theatre which will be renamed The Sondheim. His recent acquisition of the Victoria Palace Theatre will undergo a major refurbishment and expansion before reopening in 2017 with the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical Hamilton. He is also the co-

owner of Music Theatre International, the world’s largest library of secondary rights of the great musicals. Cameron was knighted in the 1996 New Year’s Honours for his services to the British Theatre and has recently been the first British producer elected to the Theater Hall of Fame.

CHARLES HART (Lyrics) was born in London and educated in Maidenhead and Cambridge. He has written words for musicals (The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, The Kissing-Dance, The Dreaming); opera (The Vampyr - BBC TV); and miscellaneous songs; as well as both words and music for television (Watching, Split Ends - Granada TV) and radio (Love Songs - BBC Radio). His Two Studies for String Quartet was performed by the Sacconi Quartet in February 2005 at London’s Purcell Room. Charles Hart’s photographs have appeared on posters and in playbills, as well as publications ranging from Attitude to the Daily Telegraph, and, in 2003, he was one of three photographers to feature in an exhibition organized by UNICEF to celebrate the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. He lives and works in London.

RICHARD STILGOE (Additional Lyrics and Book) has spent fifty years as a performer and writer in all forms of the performing arts. He wrote lyrics for Cats, Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera, The Magistrate and Road Rage, and music and lyrics for Bodywork, Brilliant the Dinosaur and Orpheus – the Mythical. His broadcasting work has earned him the New York Radio Festival Gold Award, three Monaco Festival Prizes and the Prix Italia. In 1997, he founded the Orpheus Centre in Surrey, where young disabled people prepare for independent living through a series of performing arts courses. He was High Sheriff of Surrey in 1998, during which year he was awarded the OBE. He owns and drives a JCB, and has five children and eleven grandchildren. In the Jubilee honours list of 2012, Richard was knighted for charitable service through the Alchemy Foundation.

LAURENCE CONNOR (Director). Larimer Square has come a long way in 50 years. In 1965, a once-charming block had fallen into disrepair. Demolition crews were just weeks away from scrubbing buildings that had stood since before the turn of the century. Today, due to intense preservation efforts, Larimer Square is recognized as Denver’s most beautiful and historic block, a premier shopping and dining district that celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2015.

Denver Post Season To Share, a fund of the McCormick Foundation Since 1992, more than $68 million has been distributed through Denver Post Season To Share. All contributions are matched at 50% by the McCormick Foundation and 100% of all donations (plus the match) go directly to Denver area charities that help move people out of poverty. The Denver Post and the McCormick Foundation pay all administrative expenses. This year, more than 4,900 generous donors contributed $1,525,000. With the match from the McCormick Foundation, $2,290,000 was distributed to 49 local nonprofits.

ACTS (Assisting the Community Through Service) Denver Post Employee Volunteer Program Giving back is an enriching experience for all involved and our employees take pride in donating their personal time for a wide range of projects each year. In 2015, 746 hours of service was donated through ACTS.
