FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear friends,

Welcome to the 2023-2024 Newman Center Presents season! The upcoming months bring a variety of thought-provoking and entertaining performances to Denver, and we are grateful you joined us. Our mission of uplifting audiences and artists through cultural connection is particularly evident this year as we focus on international programming. With artists from Ghana, New Zealand, Taiwan, Pakistan, Algeria, and beyond, we are bringing the world to Denver, infusing our local cultural scene with different artistic perspectives while building dialogue and exchange.

We offer a variety of ways to engage with our programming this year. In addition to the live performances, perhaps you’ll join us for a tour of the Newman Center, or attend a conversation as part of our new cultural diplomacy initiative? Be sure to sign-up for our e-newsletter at newmancenterpresents.com to be the first to learn about such events, along with new offerings added to the calendar throughout the season.

We are proud of our robust schedule of educational programming for students K-12. Between our student matinee series, Musical Explorers, Music Creators (our new music technology summer camp), and teacher professional development opportunities, we will serve over 5,000 students this year across the Denver metro and Summit County. Finally, please consider joining our Giving Circles. Benefits include access to the Rose Club, with complimentary appetizers and refreshments before select performances, invited talks with artists, and more. Your financial support is crucial for the expansion of our nationally recognized programming, educational initiatives, and community partnerships. Visit newmancenterpresents.com/give to learn more.

We look forward to a memorable season filled with art, community, and connection.

FROM THE CHANCELLOR

Welcome to the 21st Newman Center Presents season at the Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts! This space has been the University of Denver’s home for the performing arts since 2003. Every “Presents” season is an opportunity to experience the work of new and upcoming artists. It’s a way to encounter artistic voices from diverse backgrounds. And it’s a way to celebrate talented artists whose high-caliber and inspiring work has garnered international esteem.

At the University of Denver, we foster a four-dimensional experience that focuses on intellectual growth, well-being, character and careers and lives of purpose. The Newman Center is an integral part of the DU 4D Experience—and one that advances the public good both on and off campus. The Newman Center brings the world, and to Denver, joy, freedom and expression in ways that can’t be overvalued. For dance lovers, highlights this season include the international ensembles Compagnie Hervé Koubi (from the Mediterranean) and Okareka Dance (the leading contemporary Maori dance company from New Zealand). Experience the distinct Ghanaian musical sounds from singer and musician Okaidja Afroso. Explore the soul of the island nations of the Pacific and Indian Oceans with the music, spoken word and cinematic experience that is Small Island Big Song. Best of all, no passport is necessary for these talents from around the globe—just a bit of curiosity and an interest in the beauty and variety of the human experience.

In addition to the Presents series, the Newman Center is home to hundreds of performances from our amazing Lamont School of Music and DU’s Theatre Department, at little to no cost. As a cultural community hub for DU and for Denver, the Newman Center’s role in making an impact on the world is vital. I hope you will join me for several performances this season. Your support in purchasing a ticket truly helps to make a difference.

Enjoy the show.

Sincerely,

about dog man: the musical

Dog Man: The Musical is a hilarious production based on the worldwide bestselling series from Dav Pilkey, the creator of Captain Underpants and Cat Kid Comic Club.

Best buds George and Harold have been creating comics for years, but now that they’re in 5th grade, they figure it’s time to level up and write a musical based on their favorite character, Dog Man, the crime-biting sensation who is part dog, part man, and ALL HERO!! How hard could it be?

With the head of a dog and the body of a policeman, Dog Man loves to fight crime and chew on the furniture. But while trying his best to be a good boy, can he save the city from Flippy the cyborg fish and his army of Beasty Buildings? Can he catch Petey, the world’s most evil cat, who has cloned himself to exact revenge on the doggy do-gooder? And will George and Harold finish their show before lunchtime?? Find out in this epic musical adventure featuring the hilarity and heart of Dav Pilkey’s beloved characters.

The show is written by Kevin Del Aguila and Brad Alexander, who collaborated on the Emmy-winning series Peg + Cat on PBS, TheaterWorksUSA’s Click, Clack, Moo, and Clifford The Big Red Dog on PBS and Amazon. Jen Wineman directs and choreographs.
