Introduction

Living with territory and boundaries is a topic that will be discussed. we are asked to look for topics regarding the territory and boundaries of what we find interesting. In this portfolio, I will discussed about how memory can be territory and boundaries.

In chapter 1, there is an explanation about memory which is the territory and boundaries. In chapter 2, there is precedent study of buildings that have memory. In chapter 3, there is a prototype that I make to answer the claim. The claim is ‘What if we make a good memory from the building that has a bad surrounding / site? In chapter 4, there is a final design for living space that start from the research.

Memory is something that everyone has. To create a good memory from a room, it takes good quality from the room. If the scenery and ambience is good, it will be easy to create a good memory. But does a bad scene and atmosphere create a good memory too? Generation Z is often saturated with urban conditions that tend to be crowded and uncomfortable. This situation makes us need a comfortable place to rest and keeps us remembering that place. Then the question arises “What if we make a good memory from the building that has a bad surrounding / site?�.

The site is located at Jl. H. Agus Salim, Bekasi. Located in the middle of the market and on the side of the road, making people who live feel uncomfortable with the crowd. In addition, the location of the site which is close to the railroad tracks makes it more uncomfortable for the loud noise to be generated. The memory that is formed is not good because of these disturbances. Living room, which should be a comfortable place to rest, will also be disturbed by the location crowd.

This concerns the nature of memory stores, i.e., where the information is stored, how long the memory lasts for (duration), how much can be stored at any time (capacity) and what kind of information is held.

Curzio Malaparte

Casa Malaparte also known as Villa Malaparte is located on the small island of Capri. Curzio Malaparte (Italian writer) took part in the process of designing the Villa with Adalberto Libera (architect). Malaparte wanted his house reflected by his own character and he wanted to be alone. Villa Malaparte is completely isolated from civilization, only accessible by foot or by boat.

Curzio Malaparte told Adalberto Libera that he wanted a ‘staircase to infinity’ for his villa Villa Malaparte was built with local stone extracted from the site itself; as a result, it is as if the house has emerged from the landscape over which it is placed, the stairs seem to exceed the cliff, creating a new height on it.

Sequence

‘An architecture must be walked through and traversed,’ emphasized Le Corbusier (1962, 29).

The sequence is not a progression from object to object, from one view to the next, but a switch between contrasting situations, which also encompasses changing mental states. (Janson & Tigges, 2014) The sequence in this building is a transition from lowland to highland. What we see before we enter is diferent with the view at the end. Our visibility that we see is also diferent. Sequence

The visibility from stage 1 untill stage 3 is diferent.

At stage 3, our visibility is infinite because nothing limits our view.

The interior’s sequence is the same with the exterior. Where people needs to headed to the higher place. The sequence start from the the Ground Floor.

The window size gets bigger if the room is more public.

The view at the study room (1) different with the view at the lounge(2) & (4). The view that we saw on each room could make a memorable place.

There’s a view from a fireplace too. Even though it’s not on our eye level, but it could make a good memory.

If the window is opened, then we will hear the sound of the waves.

Good memories come from sensory satisfaction.

Generation Z who tends to live in cities will be disturbed by noise, crowds, and pollution. So they need a comfortable living space and make them keep remembering it.

Vertical Garden is used as an air pollution filter The circular shape is obtained from the enveloping nature The deeper, the more private the room will be The formed layer serves to muffle the sound.

The experience of different spaces from the initial entry to the private room makes the five senses receive different information. So that from the texture, visual, and comfort form a good memory.

Concept

Site is on Jl. H. Agus Salim, Bekasi.

Located in the middle of the market and located alongside a road, making people who live feel less comfortable with the crowd.

In addition, the location of the site that is close to the railroad line makes it more uncomfortable to make loud noise.

The formed memory is not good because of these disturbances. Living space that should be a comfortable place to rest, will also be disturbed by the crowd of the location.

Using Polycarbonate material, as an outer sheath, gives a new memory because outsiders can only see the silhouette. Vice versa.

By not forgetting the buildings that are nearby, there is a street at 3m elevation which is adapted from a balcony on the surrounding buildings that cover the pedestrians below.

Upon entering, people will see the park. The difference in conditions from a busy market then entering a space where vegetation is provided will provide a good memory.

By separating the usual spaces together, will make a good memory because there is a different space experience between open space and closed space.

More public spaces are openings than private rooms.

The kitchen has a folding door to extend the existing space.

Conclusion

I am satisfied in terms of precedent studies. Because I can find out the next step. I feel that I haven’t fully developed my design. So that in the future I will keep trying until I am satisfied with what I do. The lacks of my design is that the material is still not fully explored. I can use another material. I haven’t described the things that make my building memorable. The strength of my design is that I have adapted the design of the building around to be my design.

So when people see my building, they still think that my building is still part of the site.

In this studio, I learned that design can be done from research. With the evidence from research results, we can strengthen our design concepts.

When research is incomplete, we don’t know what steps we will take next. So it is important to do research before designing. For the future, I will also do research before designing. Another important thing in designing is analyzing the site. We must know our building site, so that when we design we know how things are around. Designing is not easy. So we have to keep learning.
