NAVY FROM PAGE A-1 MANILA, Jul 24 (Mabuhay) -- President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday personally visited two Philippine Navy servicemen recovering in a military hospital in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, honoring them for their bravery after they were injured in a confrontation with the China Coast Guard (CCG) near Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea. Marcos visited the two at Camp Ricarte Station Hospital, where he conferred the Order of Lapu-Lapu and handed each of them PHP100,000 in financial assistance in recognition of their courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.

The President also assured the wounded personnel of the government’s continued support for members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) tasked with defending the country’s sovereignty and sovereign rights.

According to the AFP, a CCG rigid hull inflatable boat with eight personnel unlawfully approached within close range of the BRP Sierra Madre on Monday.

It circled and took photos and videos, prompting AFP personnel aboard two rubber boats to drive it away.

The grounded ship serves as the country’s outpost in Ayungin Shoal.

The AFP said the Chinese side “reacted violently and aggressively by striking” the Navy personnel with wooden batons, causing injury and damag-

ing the Navy rubber boat.

The incident prompted strong condemnation from Philippine government officials.

Marcos earlier summoned Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan to Malacañang to express the Philippines’ concern over the incident, and called for a reset in relations between Manila and Beijing to prevent similar confrontations from happening again.

The Department of National Defense, Armed Forces of the Philippines and Department of Foreign Affairs have likewise denounced the incident, maintaining that violence against Filipino personnel performing their lawful duties is unacceptable.

In his recent remarks during the AFP change-of-command ceremony, Marcos reiterated that while the Philippines remains committed to peace and diplomacy, it will not yield its national dignity or sovereign rights.

“We seek cooperation, but we will never compromise our sovereignty. We extend friendship to all, but we will never abandon our national dignity,” the President said.

Marcos was in Palawan on Thursday for a series of engagements, including the inauguration of the Ibato-Iraan Small Reservoir Irrigation Project in Aborlan and the distribution of food assistance to families in Puerto Princesa City. (MNS)

IMPEACHMENT COURT IS PROPER VENUE FOR FULL PRESENTATION OF EVIDENCE MANILA, Jul 22 (Mabuhay) -- House of Representatives prosecutor and Akbayan Party-list Rep. Chel Diokno and House prosecution legal spokesperson Benjamin “Jay” Tolosa Jr. on Tuesday rejected claims that the prosecution impeached Vice President Sara Duterte first before searching for evidence, emphasizing that the Constitution assigns distinct roles to the House and the Senate in the impeachment process.

In a press conference at the Senate, they said the House had already gathered sufficient evidence to approve the Articles of Impeachment, while the Senate impeachment trial is the proper constitutional forum for the full presentation, examination, and testing of that evidence.

Diokno and Tolosa were responding to comments by Davao City Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte questioning why the prosecution sought Senate subpoenas for the bank and Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) records of her sister, Vice President Duterte, and her husband, lawyer Manases “Mans” Carpio, after the Articles of Impeachment had already been transmitted.

In a Facebook post written in Bisaya, Rep. Duterte reportedly portrayed the sequence as the impeachment coming first before the search for supporting documents.

Diokno said that characterization confused the House Committee on Justice’s probable-cause inquiry with the full trial conducted by the Senate impeachment court.

Under the Constitution, the House initiates impeachment cases and determines whether the allegations should proceed to trial. The Senate, on the other hand, has the sole power to try and decide the Articles of Impeachment, with the prosecution and defense presenting their respective evidence before the senator-judges.

“Noong pumasok ’yung impeachment complaint sa Committee on Justice ng House of Representatives, ang tungkulin ng committee noon ay malaman lang kung may probable cause (When the impeachment complaint entered the House Committee on Justice, the panel’s duty is to find if there’s probable cause),” Diokno said.

He said the committee was not expected to conduct the equivalent of the

Senate trial or present every piece of evidence that might later become relevant.

“Wala sa trabaho namin na halungkatin ang lahat ng ebidensya at magkaroon mismo ng trial, dahil kamay na ng Senado ’yung pag-conduct ng trial (It is not our duty to search every evidence and conduct a trial, because it is the Senate’s mandate to conduct a trial),” he said.

“Kaya mapapansin ninyo, portion lang actually ng ebidensya ang nakita natin sa Committee on Justice (So, if you noticed, only a portion of the evidence was actually shown to the Justice Committee).”

Diokno said the House proceedings nevertheless included documentary submissions and testimony used to determine probable cause, and the Senate trial is the stage at which the parties seek compulsory process, call witnesses, and ask the impeachment court to admit evidence supporting or disputing the allegations.

“The time to have evidence presented – and siyempre, para makapag-present ng ebidensya, ’yung panahon para sa subpoena – ay dito sa loob ng (and to present evidence, the tome for subpoena – is here within the) Senate Impeachment Court,” he said.

The impeachment court on Monday granted the prosecution’s requests for subpoenas covering specified peso-denominated bank records, AMLC documents, and Bureau of Internal Revenue records. It found the granted requests reasonably described, readily identifiable, and prima facie relevant and material to the allegations under Article II, which concerns alleged unexplained wealth.

The court did not authorize an unrestricted examination. It excluded foreign-currency deposits and two corporations for which it found insufficient links. AMLC records will first undergo an in-camera review, while the BIR commissioner must make the appropriate return before the court determines what tax records may lawfully be produced.

Diokno said the sequence followed by the prosecution conformed to the Constitution rather than bypassing it.

“Walang pinagkaiba ’yung ginawa naming proseso doon sa inilatag na

proseso sa ating Saligang Batas. Kaya kami naniniwala at paulit-ulit naming sinasabi na walang fishing expedition, wala ring shortcut (What we did is no different from the process laid down under the Constitution. That’s why we believe and repeatedly declare that there is no fishing expedition and there’s no shortcut here),” he said.

Tolosa, meanwhile, compared the two-stage impeachment process with a criminal case, where prosecutors first determine probable cause before the court conducts a full trial.

He stressed that the comparison concerned the sequence of proceedings, not the evidentiary standard ultimately applicable to impeachment.

“Tulad ng sinabi ni Cong. Chel, before the House of Representatives, determination muna ng probable cause.

Ganoon din sa criminal case before the prosecutor’s office: determination of probable cause (Like what Cong. Chel said, determination of probable cause comes first at the House of Representatives. It’s like in a criminal case before the prosecutor’s office: determination of probable cause),” Tolosa said.

“Hindi pa talaga required at inaasa-

han na ipapakita na lahat ng ebidensya. Lahat ng ebidensya, lalabas ’yan (It’s not really required and expected to show all the evidence. All evidence, that will be revealed) during the trial itself.”

The prosecutors clarified that the subpoena ruling does not establish the truth of the allegations or make the requested records automatically admissible.

The documents must still be produced, authenticated and formally offered, while the defense may object to their admission and explain the transactions reflected in them.

Tolosa said the Senate proceeding is therefore the proper stage for both parties to build their complete evidentiary records.

“Pagsampa sa impeachment court, ito na ho ’yung full-blown trial. Ito na ’yung tamang venue para hingin, ilabas, at siyasatin natin lahat ng ebidensya (Upon reaching the impeachment court, it is now a full-blown trial. This is now the proper venue to request, reveal, and analyze all evidence),” he said. (MNS)

COURT RESETS IMPEACHMENT CALENDAR FOR POST-SONA PHASE

MANILA, Jul 22 (Mabuhay) -- The Senate impeachment court has reorganized its trial calendar to accommodate President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), the minority’s traditional response, and the resumption of regular legislative sessions.

Presiding officer Francis Escudero announced that there would be no trial on July 27, the day of the SONA, and July 28 to give the Senate minority time to prepare and deliver its contra-SONA. “So, our next trial date will be on July 29,” Escudero said, adding that proceedings on July 29 and 30 would run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by the Senate session at 4 p.m.

Beginning in August, the impeachment court will hold trial from Monday to Wednesday, also from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., under the schedule agreed upon by the senator-judges during their caucus.

Escudero said the adjusted timetable would allow the chamber to con-

tinue hearing the case against Vice President Sara Duterte while attending to its legislative duties after the opening of the regular session.

The court also recalled, without prejudice to their reissuance, the subpoenas issued to former Land Bank branch managers Violeta Constantino and Nenita Camposano after the prosecution and defense indicated that their testimony would not yet be taken up.

It likewise received subpoena requests for House records official Marivic Pareja and Commission on Audit personnel Roderick Wamil, which Escudero said would be acted upon “at the proper time.”

Meanwhile, National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag committed to return to the impeachment court on Wednesday at 2 p.m. to continue his testimony through cross-examination, redirect and recross-examination, and questioning by senator-judges. (MNS)

Leveling Up Philippine Sports in A Changing Global Arena

As the world watched the recent World Cup matches which were held mostly in the United States, it was impossible for me not to reflect on the state of Philippine sports.

The contrast is stark: nations with deep athletic pipelines, scientific training systems, and strong grassroots programs consistently rise to the top.

Meanwhile, the Philippines, a country overflowing with natural talent and competitive spirit, continues to struggle for consistent international relevance outside a handful of disciplines. The question is no longer whether Filipinos can excel globally. They clearly can!

The real question is: How can Filipinos level up?

Building a System That Produces Champions To compete internationally, the Philippines must first acknowledge a hard truth. Talent alone is not enough. Modern sports success is built on systems, not individual brilliance.

Countries that dominate today invest in sports science, nutrition, analytics, and longterm athlete development. The Philippines needs to move toward this direction, even gradually.

Based on my research, a national sports strategy should include: Long term athlete development programs starting from childhood; - Scientific training in strength conditioning, biometrics, injury prevention; Consistent Funding, not just during Olympic years; Talent Identification programs in every region The Philippines does not need to match the budgets of the US or Japan.

When it needs consistency, clarity of di-

rection and accountability. Even modest but steady investment can transform the landscape if it’s strategic and insulated from political cycles.

Choosing Sports That Fit Filipino Strengths and Realities Given the country’s physical profile, economic constraints and limited government support, it makes sense to prioritize sports where Filipinos have natural advantages or where barriers to entry are low. Some promising areas include combat sports like boxing, taekwondo, jiu-jitsu, and karate. Filipinos excel in agility, endurance and mental toughness. These sports require relatively lower financial investment and have historically produced champions, one of whom is Manny Pacquiao. Another choice is weight-category sports such as weightlifting, and gymnastics.

Height is not a disadvantage here. Hidilyn Diaz and Carlos Yulo are strong proofs of what focused support can achieve. Endurance sports to include marathon, triathlon and cycling, are great options. Filipinos have strong cardiovascular endurance and resilience which are the ideal traits for long distance events. Team sports with lower height demands, specifically include football, volleyball and softball. While basketball remains beloved, height limitations make global competitiveness difficult. Football, on the other hand, is more inclusive physically and has a massive ecosystem Filipinos can tap into. More recent and rapidly growing field where Filipinos already shine is

Esports. Minimal physical constraints, high strategic demand, and strong youth interest make this a realistic medal and industry opportunity. Aquatic sports, for instance swimming, diving, dragon boat, are strong considerations too, because the Philippines is an archipelago, with water as a natural environment.

The key is not to abandon traditional favorites but to diversity and invest where Filipinos can win.

The Role of Citizens, Schools and Private Corporations Government support may be inconsistent but sports development does not have to depend solely on the state.

Ordinary Filipinos, schools and private companies can play transformative roles.

Schools should treat sports as part of education, not an extracurricular afterthought. PE programs must evolve beyond calisthenics and outdated drills.

Partnerships with local clubs, better coaching, and interschool leagues can create early pipelines. Private corporations, on one hand, can sponsor athletes, fund training camps, and adopt sports teams. Communities can build local sports cultures. Barangay leagues, weekend running clubs, cycling groups and martial arts gyms create environments where talent can be discovered and nurtured. Parents

also play a crucial role by encouraging children to explore sports beyond basketball. Exposure is often the first step toward excellence. Media can highlight lesser-known sports and celebrate athletes outside basketball and boxing circles. Visibility drives interest; interest drives participation.

A Future Worth Building The Philippines has already proven it can produce world-class athletes.

What it needs now is a national recognition that sports are not just entertainment but a pathway to national pride, youth development and global competitiveness. If the country can combine strategic investment, grassroots participation, and private sector support, the next generation of Filipino champions will not be accidental. They will be inevitable, Then, all Filipinos will unanimously chorus, “Para sa ‘yo ang laban na ito!!”

Building a Legacy, Not Just Holding Events Every community organization can host an event. The real question is: What remains after the lights are turned off, the decorations are taken down, and everyone goes home?

At FACAI, we believe our purpose extends far beyond organizing successful activities. Events are important because they bring people together, celebrate our Filipino heritage, and strengthen friendships. But they should never become the destination—they should be the pathway toward something greater.

A meaningful legacy is built by serving others with consistency, integrity, and compassion. BELLE MARIANO REFLECTS ON DONBELLE JOURNEY, THANKS FANS FOR 7 YEARS OF SUPPORT

MANILA, Jul 10 (Mabuhay) -- Kapamilya star Belle Mariano took to social media to share a touching message for fans and her longtime onscreen partner, Donny Pangilinan.

In a video message, Belle looked back on the seven-year journey she and Donny shared as one of the country’s most beloved love teams, DonBelle.

“Seven years. It’s such a simple number to say, but it holds countless memories, lessons and moments that changed our lives forever,” Belle said while showing clips from her first projects with Donny.

She added, “It feels just like yesterday when we first stepped on screen together, unsure of what this journey would lead us. We only knew what we would face - every challenge, every fear, every dream, side by side. Before we knew it, something beautiful had grown beyond us.”

Belle reflected that the journey eventually became bigger than just the two of them: “It was no longer just about Donny and Belle, it became about all of you who chose to believe in us and walk with us every step of the way.”

Belle expressed her gratitude for having Donny by her side throughout the years. Although the two have decided to pursue individual careers for now, Belle assured that she would continue supporting her “Nato” every step of the way.

“We built so much together, dreams we once thought were impossible. And now, as we both choose to explore new paths and grow as individual artists and people, I want you to know how deeply

grateful I am for everything we created together,” she continued.

“This is not a goodbye. It’s simply a ‘see you later.’ While we explore new skies, and I promise, I will always be your biggest cheerleader from across the room.”

Belle also thanked DonBelle’s loyal fanbase, the Bubblies, for standing by them through every milestone.

“You filled venues, trended topics, celebrated our victories and shielded when things got tough. But more importantly, it’s the genuine love, the loyalty and the community you’ve built among yourselves that has truly moved us,” Belle stated.

“You stood by us. Thank you for your love. You didn’t just support the love team. You became a home. You became a family. Thank you for your trust and faith. And thank you for staying.”

As DonBelle begins a new chapter, Belle hoped fans would continue supporting both of them as individual artists.

She added that DonBelle’s story is far from over, saying: “Because DonBelle is not a story about an ending, it’s a sto-

ry about growth. And, most meaningful stories do not truly end, they simply take new shapes.”

Belle ended her message by thanking fans for being part of what she described as the most magical years of her and Donny’s lives.

“So, thank you for the most magical years of our lives. You will always be our bubbles of joy, our constant, life and our home and wherever this next chapter leads, we carry all of you with us,” she

said. “We love you always. Hanggang sa wakas.”

Donny later responded to Belle’s tribute, writing, “This is beautiful, Tink.”

James Reid and Julia Barretto eunite in horror film ‘Haunted Carnival’ for this year’s MMFF

MANILA, Jul 13 (Mabuhay) -- James Reid and Julia Barretto are finally sharing the screen again. However, this time, they are stepping into something far darker than their previous work together.

The two have been confirmed to be part of the cast of Haunted Carnival, a horror film under Regal Entertainment Inc. that will compete in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival.

Regal described it as their “most ambitious nightmare yet,” with the film diving into themes of spectacle, folklore, and fear.

“For generations, Regal has brought Filipino horror to life. This Christmas, we invite you to experience our most ambitious nightmare yet. A terrifying new chapter in the Haunted universe awaits inside Haunted Carnival – where spectacle, folklore, and fear collide,” Regal said in an Instagram post.

Joining James and Julia in the film are Fyang Smith, RK Bagatsing, and Ronnie Alonte, along with veteran actors John Arcilla and Maricel Soriano.

It is directed by Joey De Guzman and written by Alan Tijamo and John Paul E. Abellera.

For longtime Filipino moviegoers, the pairing of James and Julia carries a bit of history. The two last worked together in the 2015 romantic film Para Sa Hopeless Romantic, directed by Andoy Ranay and based on the best-selling novel by Marcelo Santos III. The film also starred Nadine Lustre and Inigo Pascual.

That same year, rumors of a date between James and Julia made the rounds, which James quickly denied.

“Go out? No, no… they said that we are in the coffee shop? No,” he said in an interview with CinemaNews.

At the time, his love team with Nadine Lustre, known as JaDine, was at its peak.

The years that followed brought mixed signals about whether a reunion was ever on the table.

In May 2019, Julia told Boy Abunda on Tonight with Boy Abunda that she was open to it.

“Yes, I’m willing to work with him.

Baka interesting ‘yung dynamic,” she said, although she also admitted she was unsure where they stood personally at the time. “Friends ba tayo? Di ko alam. I’m not sure,” she said.

A few months later, in October 2019, James appeared on the same show and said he would rather not work with Julia, not out of any personal issue, but because of the attention it would inevitably bring.

“There’s too much noise when it comes to fans and stuff. I have no problem with her. It’s just too much noise.

Let’s make life easy,” he said.

Six years later, it appears they have both moved past that. Haunted Carnival will be one of several entries in this year’s MMFF lineup, which also includes 2nd Miracle in Cell No. 7, GMA Pictures’ Amir directed by Zig Dulay and starring Dennis Trillo, and The Greatest Showdown directed by Jun Robles Lana.

The festival also features the much-anticipated pairing of comedy icons Vice Ganda and Vic Sotto.

Butter Me Up, Buttercup!

Somewhere along the way, we Filipinos discovered that butter wasn't the only thing capable of softening people.

Butter has lived a fascinating life. It has browned toast, glorified ensaymada, enriched mashed potatoes and turned Chicken à la Kyiv into edible theater.

Somewhere along the way, however, we Filipinos gave butter a second career—it wandered out of the kitchen and into our vocabulary. Before long, it wasn't just bread that got buttered..

Sofia Andres embraces being ‘The Pambansang Third Wheel’ in ‘The Loyalty Game’

MANILA, Jul 16 (Mabuhay) -Kapamilya actress Sofia Andres is looking back on how far she has come in her acting journey after joining the star-studded cast of ABS-CBN’s newest drama series, The Loyalty Game.

In a social media post, Sofia reflected on how a dream she once thought was out of reach eventually became a reality.

“Some dreams have a funny way of becoming reality,” Sofia wrote.

“I never imagined I’d get the chance to be part of a teleserye alongside people I once only admired from afar.

I honestly thought it would always just be a dream.”

The actress recalled that her television series, Pusong Ligaw, in 2017, had an official soundtrack originally performed by Kapamilya actor Jericho Rosales, who is now one of her costars in The Loyalty Game.

“I still remember my very first teleserye with a love team. Pusong Ligaw as our theme song. Looking back reminds me how important it is to keep my feet on the ground, stay grateful, and never stop learning,” Sofia said.

For the actress, being part of The Loyalty Game served as a reminder of how much she has grown, both professionally and personally.

“Every project teaches me something new, but this one reminded me that growth comes from the people you work with every single day. They continue to inspire me in ways they probably don’t even realize,” she added.

In the series, Sofia portrays Beth, one of the women whose life becomes intertwined with Ben, the character played by Jericho Rosales. She said the complexity of her role, coupled with the opportunity to work alongside a seasoned ensemble, made the project an easy decision to accept.

Taking on Beth proved to be one of the most demanding roles of her career.

“Playing Beth was one of the most challenging roles I’ve taken on, but because of the people around me, their guidance, patience, and belief in me. I was able to see how meaningful

her place in the story truly is,” she expressed.

Sofia ended her message by expressing gratitude to everyone who became part of her journey and contributed to her growth as an actress.

“To everyone who became part of this journey, thank you for helping me grow not just as an actress, but as a person. I’ll always carry these lessons with me,” she said.

Julie Anne San Jose excited to return as ‘The Voice Kids Philippines’ coach

MANILA, Jul 20 (Mabuhay) -- Julie Anne San Jose is set to reprise her role as a coach for the upcoming season of “The Voice Kids Philippines.”

The Asia’s Limitless Star shared her excitement about helping discover and hone the next generation of singers.

Julie Anne said she’s unsure when the blind auditions will take place, but she is already looking forward to them.

“So far, it’s been a busy journey, and I’m happy about it,” she said.

Julie Anne also expressed excitement about working alongside her fellow coaches, whose identities are still being kept under wraps. She added that some of them will be her collaborators on a television show for the first time.

“First time ko makakatrabaho ‘yung ilan sa kanila, although we’ve known each other for a long time already since maliit lang naman ang industry,” she said.

“I’m super excited and looking forward to the season,” she added.

Earlier this month, Julie Ann teased the release of a new song inspired by her boyfriend, Rayver Cruz.

She is currently in her music producer era, taking a more hands-on role in developing her sound. Her latest release, “Kung Ikaw ay Bibitaw,” dropped in March.

In February, Julie performed with Josh Groban at his concert in Manila.

On Facebook, the Kapuso Primetime Queen shared photos from a training session, including snaps of herself holding a tennis racket while on the court.

“Reunited with Coach again. So happy to be back,” Marian wrote in the caption.

The actress did not reveal how long she had been away from the sport, but her post was met with excitement from fans.

Marian is working on a new movie, “Remember,” with husband Dingdong Dantes.

They flew to Canada last month to shoot for the project.

Beyond their commitment to the business community, Rowena and Rowell are bringing their deep passion for holistic health directly to our members. Rowena, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and owner of Insight Counseling and Wellness Clinic, will be leading an upcoming mental health workshop tailored specifically for chamber members.
