6 Ways to Connect with the Nation’s Top Transfer Students

2 Partners in Excellence

from the President & CEO At Phi Theta Kappa, we believe there is an equitable distribution of talent among the nation’s community college students but an unequal distribution of opportunity. But when we work together, our organizations can open the doors of opportunity to these bright and talented students. Since 1918, Phi Theta Kappa has been recognizing community college students at the first glimpse of success. We engage and equip them through activities and opportunities designed to help them grow as scholars and leaders, preparing them for their next step, which often involves transfer to a four-year college or university. In fact, more than 75 percent of PTK members are preparing to transfer to a four-year college.

COVID created unanticipated barriers for the nation’s community college students, but it also underscored their resilience. In a time of uncertainty, our students adapted and thrived. Phi Theta Kappa is working to not only level the field for these students, but to change it. Through programs and activities including Transfer Edge™, our annual PTK Catalyst College Transfer Fair, the PTK Transfer Honor Roll, and PTK Connect™, we work to equip students with the resources and tools they need to successfully navigate transfer. As a result, Phi Theta Kappa is the only single-source resource for four-year college and university partners to attract, recruit, and retain the nation’s most promising community college transfer students. We believe the success of our members can be largely attributed to the strong and meaningful relationships with college and university partners like you. So, on behalf of Phi Theta Kappa, thank you for being a Partner in Excellence and for supporting the members and mission of Phi Theta Kappa. It is more important now than ever before.

Three examples of how a PTK partnership can impact your transfer recruitment. As COVID-19 swept the country during the 2020/2021 school year, many colleges shifted away from their go-to recruitment strategies. Instead, they moved to survival mode, increasing focus on simply delivering quality education to existing students and scaling back efforts to recruit new students.

Students at Wilmington University, New Castle, Delaware

While many recruiters found themselves pulling back as a result of budget cuts, travel restrictions, and in-person event cancellations, an innovative few embraced the current conditions as an opportunity to level-up their PTK partnership and continue advancing their transfer game. Those who did energized their enrollment strategies and made transfer to their institutions more accessible and inclusive of PTK members even in a time of challenge. Learn more about how they did it and find ideas to customize your transfer recruitment strategy.

PTK Connect™ college profile

Increase your PTK transfer scholarship Although Wilmington University (WU) already offered a PTK transfer scholarship and engaged in practices designed to make transfer to the institution seamless, including articulation agreements and guaranteed admission for students transferring with an associate degree, they weren’t content to rest on the success of these efforts. “[We] had to work several strategies to stay visible, responsive, and proactive in meeting the needs of transfer students, especially in the uncertain times of the pandemic,” said Dr. Jacqueline Varsalona, Vice President of Institutional Advancement. WU’s main campus is in New Castle, Delaware, with 12 other campuses throughout Delaware and New Jersey. Each New Jersey site is located at a partner community college. WU suspected that financial need presented a greater challenge for potential transfers because of the pandemic. Digging deeper, they reached out to then-local PTK chapter advisor Pattie Van Atter for feedback. As a result of what they learned from this collaboration, the university increased their PTK scholarship from one scholarship of $500 to five scholarships of $1,000 each to better address students’ increased financial needs. When the opportunity to join the PTK Virtual Transfer Fair came in December 2020, WU seized it. They connected with over 50 PTK members during the event and are still fielding questions and building relationships with them today. The power of the PTK partnership paid off for this recruitment team by not only growing their list of prospects, but also earning the university the 2021 Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Honor Roll designation — an honor that will continue to attract the attention of high-achieving transfer students going forward. “The PTK events had excellent attendance, and we will continue to participate in them,” Varsalona said. “We will also leverage our Transfer Honor Roll status to demonstrate our commitment to prospective students. When they are ready to transfer to Wilmington University, we will always aspire to make their transitions seamless and fulfilling.” Students at Wilmington University, New Castle, Delaware

PTK Connect™ college profile

Connect with PTK chapter advisors PTK Connect became a stand-out tool in the transfer recruitment strategy at St. Francis College (SFC) in 2020. Subscribing at the unlimited level allowed the college to cultivate prospects using an array of channels. Relationship-building began by reaching out to PTK advisors using the Advisor List addon available from PTK Connect. SFC invited advisors to take part in their Community College Summit, giving them an opportunity to gain knowledge and exchange ideas, all with the goal of supporting students through the transfer process.

“As we know, advisors play an integral role in helping this population of students transfer to senior colleges, so establishing such relationships allows for the perfect handoff,” said Assistant Director of Admissions Michael Phillips. “Students often need an arsenal of support, so we took advantage of the list to create a dense network to better prepare students to transition. “Our goal is to maximize our partnership with PTK to ensure that we are doing everything we can to assist members in finding their right-fit college (hopefully SFC), walk them through a smooth process, and provide our colleagues on the other side of the desk with the most comprehensive information possible to successfully guide students to a four-year institution.” Additionally, SFC’s unlimited-level subscription to PTK Connect helped the college cast a wider net for prospective transfers and make direct contacts with students who matched their criteria. And, their digital ad on PTK Connect rounded out the strategy by reinforcing their message. It was a no-brainer to increase “ our partnership with PTK,” Phillips said. “When we first began working on strategies to maximize transfer enrollments and create efficiencies in guiding students through the transfer process, it was crystal clear that the way to grow was partnering at an even greater extent with PTK. Not only did we see an uptick with high-achieving students, but we also saw an uptick with students interested in joining our honors program.”

PTK Connect™ college profile

Sponsor PTK Catalyst & Award transfer credit for PTK courses Build relationships and crush barriers — that’s the focus of Eastern Oregon University’s (EOU) approach to recruiting high-performing transfer students. In addition to maximizing their use of PTK Connect and creating a PTK transfer scholarship, this firsttime PTK partner amplified their reach with a PTK Catalyst sponsorship.

“A large portion of our marketing and outreach efforts start with building relationships at the individual chapter level,” said Cody Singer, Assistant Director of Online Enrollment and Strategic Partnerships. “EOU has made an effort to collaborate with PTK chapters and support their chapter development and outreach at the local level. These relationships allowed us to extend warm invitations directly to students to join our virtual booth at Catalyst.” To incentivize the invitation and boost engagement participation at Catalyst, EOU offered students who visited their virtual booth a chance to win a pair of Apple® AirPods. To extend their Catalyst reach even further, they took advantage of the opportunity for Catalyst sponsors to provide a promotional video, which was aired as part of the event’s primary sessions. EOU also received a list of registrants and attendees to help maximize return on investment in the sponsorship. “Our investments in scholarships, academic credit for PTK Edge programs, sponsorship of chapter events, regional conferences, and PTK Catalyst have increased EOU’s exposure to transfer students,” Singer said. “Partnering to support the mission of Phi Theta Kappa and its members has resulted in better transfer policies, a better transfer experience for all students, and has helped EOU work toward its mission to be the most transfer-friendly university in the country.”

Score extra credit Follow the lead of these innovators, and you’ll be on your way to earning extra credit with potential transfers. In early 2021, Eastern Oregon University (EOU) became the first four-year institution to award transferable credit to students for their PTK experiences. Using Agency Sponsored Learning and Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL), the university awards up to 10 credits for the completion of PTK’s Leadership Development Studies and PTK Edge courses. “We are hyper-focused on eliminating barriers for transfer students and maximizing their transfer experience,” said Cody Singer, EOU Assistant Director of Online Enrollment and Strategic Partnerships. “In addition to awarding scholarships and ensuring affordability, we have built transfer policies that accept more transfer credit than most universities, and we are proud to be the first in the country to award college credit for PTK Edge and leadership courses.”

Students at Eastern Oregon University, La Grande, Oregon

Adding this value for students was the right fit for PTK partner Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) as well. Both on-campus and online students can potentially transfer in up to 10 credits, which saves them time and money.

“These transfer credits, plus the existing 10 percent tuition discount for PTK members, can amount to a savings of up to $2,880,” said Kurt Tautenhan, SNHU’s then-Regional Director of Academic Alliances. “This benefit speaks to SNHU’s mission and our willingness to do what’s right for our students and our partners.” On the horizon, Thomas Edison State University (TESU), a majority-online institution, is working with PTK staff to evaluate course requirements with the goal of offering similar transfer credit soon. ”Accepting transfer of previously earned credit and honoring assessment credit is what we do and are exceptional at,” said Paul Singh, Assistant Director of Enrollment Management for TESU. “We understand the hard work and diligence that PTK students invest in their academic journey! Strengthening our partnership with Phi Theta Kappa is a priority for TESU, and we will continue to nurture this relationship going forward.”

Bri Barone Bri Barone was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and is a three-time graduate of Anne Arundel Community College, most recently completing an associate degree in teaching. She will attend Rider University in New Jersey this fall on the prestigious Transfer Trustee Scholarship, which covers full tuition for two years of full-time study. Only three of these awards are given, and they are exclusively for active Phi Theta Kappa members. As a first-generation college student, Bri initially found navigating the college transfer process confusing and taxing. She utilized PTK Connect in the first few months of her transfer journey to research potential colleges. Through the platform, she found an array of colleges both in- and out-ofstate that boasted the small class sizes and tightknit community that were important to her.

“PTK Connect allowed me to explore where my fit could be while making sure I was taking advantage of competitive scholarship and financial aid programs available,” she said. “(It) gave me peace of mind that there were strong fits and cost-effective options for me, even if it meant challenging my comfort zone and looking out-of-state.”

Makena Harrison attended Augusta University in Georgia in 2019 but transferred to Georgia Military College – Augusta Campus when COVID-19 hit in 2020. She heard about Phi Theta Kappa on a campus visit. In March 2021, she graduated with a degree in early childhood education. She utilized PTK Connect to research colleges all over the nation and to find an option that was both affordable and offered scholarships exclusively to PTK members. The platform also enabled her to customize a search based on personal preferences, which led her to discover Arizona State University.

“PTK has helped me pay for college and search for four-year colleges while I’m at it,” she said. “I primarily searched for colleges that offered PTK scholarships. The other colleges that didn’t have it would be at the bottom of my list. Overall, PTK has been the best thing to happen to me during my college career.”

Additional accolades followed, including being one of 20 named to the prestigious 2021 AllUSA Academic Team and selected as the 2021 Texas Student of the Year. Despite his achievements, Ferdinando was unprepared for the transfer process. He used PTK Connect as a course to teach him how to transfer and learned how to meet crucial deadlines, how to spot information that could help him select a good-fit college, and how important it is to connect with writing instructors. He’s transferring to Columbia University this fall to study political science.

“(PTK Connect) educated me that I need to choose a university not for the name, but for how well their programs match my goals and future career,” he said. “Most of my first choices were not a good fit for me. PTK Connect inspired me to see my university as an investment, where I need to ensure I am going to an institution that will bring the most out of me.”
