Bad Example
by pthayer
This is an example of bad typography that I found in my job. The first thing I noticed was the four different fonts used throughout the typography. The first line, “White Chocolate,” is in a sans serif font with one space between each letter. This line has a different type size than that of the other sans serif font, “Chocolate Company.” The boldness of the first line is to draw attention. However, even though it is not the headline, it competes visually with the brand name, which can cause the overall typography to be less visually pleasing. The second line, “Cafe Sauce,” is italicized in cursive. Same as the long sentence at the bottom of the design. The cursive is lovely. However, the italicized section hurts the readability of the words; therefor, is a negative aspect of this typography. The headline “Hollander” is a serif typeface with one space between each letter. This would be great, considering it’s aligned in the middle; however the contrast from the top to the bottom is too much of a difference. “Chocolate Company” is in a sans serif typeface, but the color that is applied to it makes the readability bad. In this case, the use of color negatively impacts the typography. Overall it has too many contrasting design qualities for this to be a good example of typography.

This is a good example of typography that I found at the Orlando Airport. This has a very cohesive design that emphasizes the name of this restaurant. It is effortless, which leaves no room for errors. The font is sans serif and consistently doesn’t throughout the entire typography. I especially like the unique lower-centered font because it adds a modern theme to the typography, which is also shown in the light version of that typeface. The spacing between the letters is standard and is a nice twist because most typography in all caps will have one space between each letter, but this keeps the standard spacing which I believe was a good choice. The alignment is centered and even and has a simple white color that makes the typography add to its simple and modern theme. In terms of negative space, there is a bit, but I don’t think it looks bad. It adds more to the typography. The all caps draws attention to the name and creates more visual hierarchy which is great for a visually appealing typographic design. Overall, this sleek modern design is my favorite because it shows that even simple designs hold impact and they don’t have to be the most eye-catching “unique” design to be good typography. Just like we learned in the crystal goblet that as long as the typography is doing what it’s supposed to do you don’t need to be the most
