SPRINGING FORWARD By Jeff Munsey, General Manager
Spring is my favorite time of year here in Yuba Sutter. For about eight weeks starting in late March through Mother’s Day, the weather is amazing with crisp clear mornings and warm afternoons. It’s truly a great time to enjoy the outdoors and work on your golf game. I wanted to share news on a wide variety of subjects as we look ahead to Summer. So much has changed in the last year and we are seeing a winding down of COVID restrictions ahead of the State's plan for full reopening in mid-June. We have been working together as a management team for the past month to prepare for a gradual return to more traditional business over the summer. Let me take you through some of the things happening around the club: The Pro Shop Luke and Nathan are in the early stages of implementing changes inside the pro shop that will change the layout and the way we display some of the exciting new men’s and women’s products Luke is bringing in. Keep an eye out for small changes starting in May. Men’s & Women’s Invitationals I am very excited to see the planning and participation that is developing around our Men’s and Women’s Invitationals this year. Both the Men’s Club and Women’s Club have done a great job planning for this year’s tournaments and I expect that both events will be exciting to follow. Please inquire about participation with the Pro Shop.

I would like to wrap up by wishing you a great May and I wish all our club's “Moms” a Happy Mother’s Day. Thanks for making time to read The Playbook and I look forward to seeing you around the clubhouse.
Staffing Changes Chef Eric Carter has returned as we ramp back up for tournament season and the return of banquet events. Chef Casey has moved over full time to oversee operations at The City Club. Chef Eric has been with the club since 2013 and is excited to return after a year away while on furlough in response to the loss of all event income due to COVID-19.

Through The Decades: 60 Years of Membership & Memories The heart of our membership has always been with the individuals and families that call this place home and welcome others as their own family. Over Peach Tree's 60 years of membership, lots of memories have been created through golfing, friends, family, tournaments, special events, dining and more. Here we feature a few families and individual members who have helped shape our community at Peach Tree, going back to the beginning in 1960 through today. Enjoy as we take a stroll down memory lane to showcase what makes Peach Tree so special, favorite memories, the secrets to golf and what the Club meant to everyone during this past year of the COVID pandemic.
THE GENGLER FAMILY Members since 1960
Robert Gengler started playing golf with his dad at Plumas Lake at the age of 8, continuing when his dad became a Charter member of Peach Tree in 1959. He played with his father and father's friends: Wes Chipman, Royce McClure, Ivan Lemoine, Bill Hust, Dr. Vogt, Ralph Washburn, and many others, which he recalls as "a very special and enjoyable part of his childhood." He even played Peach Tree on the very first day it opened back in 1960. After that point, he was hooked on golf. Robert's summers consisted of playing 36 holes a day with his friends Bryon Washburn, Roger Manwell, Jimmy Troncatty, Charlie & Evan Hildebrand, and Edmud Manwell. After attending Law School and returning from the East Coast, Robert became Peach Tree's very first Junior Member in 1975, which was a controversial member type at the time. He has "grown old" playing golf with a great group of friends and still plays two to three times a week to this day. His wife Jennifer has now taken up the game and loves it as well, which is something they share together. Through the years, he has seen his parents pass away, having Celebrations of Life here at the Club, as well as his daughter's wedding reception. He was also Board President for two terms in the 1980's and recalls fond memories of one of his first jobs working in the Snack Shack for two summers in High School. Needless to say, Peach Tree has been a big part of his life for over 60 years. As a "serious" golfer, his best advice is to not take the game too seriously. What's most important to Robert is the fun comradery the game brings, as well as the laughs and stories he has about golf with friends and family over the years. When asked what the Club meant to him during COVID, he says it was such a great feeling to get out for fresh air and be with friends again. He was fortunate to bounce back from having COVID and says "It was one of the happiest days of my life to recover and get back on the golf course again and enjoy the game and friends."
RALPH "RIFF" WASHBURN & WALT CHRISTIANSEN Members since 1967 & 1970
With 100 years of membership between them and 40 years of friendship, Riff and Walt have many stories to look back on, including the success they had together while Riff served as Board President in 1992 with Walt on his Board of Directors. During those days, you'd have to come and get in line to sign up for the Invitational which was more like the US Open, sold out for years with spectators to cheer on the players. "We did that" Riff says. Walt remembers: "Two people would be on each end of a big rope across the fairway to hold the spectators back from the golfers who were playing and then they would move the rope down to the next shot." Today, you can find these forever friends playing cards and having lunch after golf most Tuesdays and Thursdays. In fact, during COVID, they played cards throughout the entire time, and were most thankful to the Club for staying open so they could get out of the house, golf and get fresh air. They would have "gone crazy" if they had nothing to do. When asked what their secret to the golf game is, Walt replied "Not worrying too much about it, just enjoying yourself while you're out there and don't throw clubs." He states he has never thrown a club in his life, but for Riff that's a different story, he laughs: "Many, many clubs (have been thrown), and Riff jokes that he keeps Frank Lazzeroni in business. But overall, Riff believes in consistency, "If you are going to be a golfer, you have to play every week. The more you play, the better you get."
THE GEWEKE FAMILY Members since 1987
In all their years of membership, dating back to 1987, The Geweke Family agrees that Peach Tree has brought so much joy in many forms over the years: being a place for golf and holiday gatherings, as well as a place for fostering friendships and community goodwill. Most of their favorite family memories include the family meals they have shared and being very involved in special events such as the Fremont Rideout Golf Tournament & Pink October Golf Tournament, both which have raised much awareness in our community and funds for two very great causes. During COVID, they appreciated the "sense of normalcy" that the Club provided, and they look forward to bringing their children to enjoy the Club for many years to come. For Larry, the secret to a great golf game is simple: "Patience", he says.
THE VINCENT FAMILY Members since 2010
"Peach Tree is more than a place to golf," Michelle says. Most of their closest family friendships have started and developed here, and it has also been a great place to meet potential clients and partners for their Solar Business. Some of their favorite things about the Club over the years have been the Carnivals, BINGO nights, swim BBQ's and Junior golf & swim clinics. David has enjoyed introducing his 4 girls to the game of golf, teaching them how to swing a club and how to be polite and courteous to other people. His key to golf is keeping a good attitude, even when it's not his day: "Take it one swing at a time and live in the moment. Put the bad shots behind you and do your best." During COVID, they valued having a place their whole family could "escape to" and get out, which was "an important part of our getting through the pandemic with as little emotional scars as possible."
THE POUKISH FAMILY Members since 2020
The Poukish Family joined in 2020 to "have the experience of playing golf together as a family in a beautiful setting." Mostly though, it was their youngest son, Sam, who convinced them to join so that he and his father, Jack, could start playing his favorite sport together and have "father-son" time. This is just the beginning. On most late afternoons, this dynamic duo can be spotted at the Club practicing and playing to improve their games with each round as they are still learning the sport. One of their favorite things so far as members are playing the back nine just as the sun is beginning to set through the trees. "It really is a beautiful setting!" says Jack. As they continue to practice and learn the game of golf, Jack states that "our secret is not getting upset when we hit a bad shot! I think the best strategy is to celebrate the good shots and remember those while forgetting your bad shots." During COVID, they learned early on that you had to find things to do to stay active. Their family often walks, rides bikes, hikes, swims, and plays tennis. "So, when our friends started telling us about golf and how you could still play golf out at Peach Tree, we knew it was time. So happy we joined!" And we are so happy to have them.
TOM SOUZA Member since 2021
Tom is a Sacramento resident who has a long lineage of years here in the Yuba-Sutter area as a former President of Bank of America and on the Board of Directors for many years for Fremont-Rideout, recalling many fond memories from their tournaments when he would sit at # 14, giving out special label wine to some participants. Golf is a new sport to him, having just started in the past two years, but he's always been an athlete as a boxer and rugby player. He is really enjoying the sport and his time here so far. Tom's favorite thing about Peach Tree is the people, "You can duplicate the environment but you can't duplicate the people." You can see him out here playing four times a week with "the OF" (Old Farts) group: Chuck Esparza & Bob LaSalle mostly, whom he has known for years, but seeing them here, "it's like no time has passed." He doesn't have a secret to golf (yet), but he laughs "Just hit it hard! I've only got one speed, that's it. All the guys are telling me to swing easy, and it's just not going to happen...I walk away with a dollar or two some days, so I'm okay." During COVID, he has really enjoyed the opportunity to play and be outside, and would've "gone nuts" otherwise. He looks forward to many more years of golf and friendship.
PRO TIPS FROM LUKE How To Gain The Chipping Touch This lesson is for the person who doesn’t get the ball up and down often, or you wish you could control the speed of your chip shots Try this easy drill to dial in the right distance with your chip shots: Practice chipping while looking at the target, not the ball. When you focus on the target, you’re more apt to turn your body toward your follow-through. Once you get used to it, your club will bottom out at the same place every time, giving you more consistent distance control. On the course, take your practice swings while looking at the hole, making sure to brush the grass with your clubhead. This will help you feel how your body and club move together and you will be more confident with your short shots.

NOTES FROM TRACY SHANAHAN GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
We have initiated a new approach to our pond maintenance on hole 7. Golden Pond, a pond-based plant nursery out of Loomis, has developed an exciting plan for ornamental plantings and beautification for us. In mid-April, we had a number of water lilies planted for the bay nearest to hole 7. In mid-May, there will be additional strategic plantings of other plant materials that will be designed to enhance not only the aesthetics but the overall health of the pond. We will be strategically managing the cattails as part of the more natural setting development, and along with the ornamentals, will aim to benefit the general health of the pond. Also, there will be tan installation of two islands of ornamentals plants, again to enhance the aesthetics but also begin absorption of the nutrient rich body of water that generally loads with algal blooms. We are very excited to see this enhancement to the Club, and a huge reduction in time and materials to otherwise keep the pond “clean”. It will likely take 2-3 seasons to achieve full benefits from the plantings, but we certainly hope you will enjoy watching the transformation!

In order to ensure a quality golf experience for all, I would like to remind you of a couple of things: First, if you made a tee time and will not be able to make it, please cancel online or with The Pro Shop so that we may make it available to another member. Second, we will be enforcing two riders per cart again as was the "norm" before COVID. We understand that there may be individuals who are COVID sensitive, and they will have the option to wear a mask while riding, or the option to walk. These two things alone will help us stay on par with an incredible golf experience for all of our members, and I appreciate you doing your part to ensure this for all. Happy golfing!

MEN'S INVITATIONAL: Rules & Format Men's Invitational - June 10, 11, 12 USGA Rules of Golf Apply (14 Club maximum, play the ball down everywhere) Format Two-Man Best Ball Match Play. Strokes allotted off the low handicap player in each group. Flights will consist of 6 teams determined by the combined handicap of partners. Handicap will be the low index of the last 12 months. Partners must be within an 8 stroke differential. Points Each team will play a series of 5 nine hole matches within their flight. The match will be a One Net Best Ball between partners, with the low net score between teams determining the winner of each hole. One point is available on each hole. Winning a hole outright is worth 1 point, ½ point for a tie, and no negative points. There are a total of 10 points available on the nine hole match. The extra point is awarded to the team winning the match. That point will be split in the event of a tied match. If there is a tie between teams in a flight after the five matches, the tie breaker is as follows: Tie Breaker A – head to head match between teams. Tie Breaker B – the last match on Saturday Tie Breaker C – chip off (This tie breaker format will be used if there is a tie for any of the Wild Card Spots).
The Shootout The winners of each flight, the team with the most points won in the final match, and the team with the most points on Saturday will take part in the Shoot-Out. The format is a true Alternate Shot, with each team getting a percentage of their total team handicap, strokes falling as they would on the scorecard. The team can decide which player will tee off first with the teammate of the player who has holed out, teeing off on the next hole. In the event of a tie for elimination, the alternate shot order will remain in effect. DEBUNKING THE MYTHS Don't get "stuck in the sand" with hear-say around the Club! Here are the facts: Guest Passes: Available year-round to Proprietary Members only for 10 for $200, unlimited, no expiration. Other member types may purchase 10 guest passes for $300 within the first 30 days of membership, or at a designated time of year; one-time purchase, no expiration date. City Club Membership: All current members have access to exclusive dining at the City Club with their spouse and guests for no extra fee. For new members, it is $99 / year. The Vista Restaurant is open inside the Clubhouse for dining! Carts should not be driven up to the greens. Please keep 30 yards distance to keep our course in immaculate condition.
We are still working with the ABC on issuance of a liquor license. State offices including the ABC continue to operate mostly with remote staff which is slowing the process. Sometimes the patience is hard to come by but in the end, the result will be well worth the wait. While we wait, we are making some changes to the preview operation to start practicing for dinner service. Beginning in the middle of May, we will start offering Friday Night Dining. Opening for dinner on Friday nights will allow the culinary team to test and adjust the evening menu in the same way we did for lunch and brunch over the past 2 months. We get messages and phone calls every week from members who tell us they want to have dinner service start, even without the ability to order a glass of wine or cocktail with dinner. Watch your email soon for a preview of the dinner menu and information on how to book a Friday Night Dinner reservation starting soon.
