Student Mobility at Penn State Scranton (AY 2016/17-2021/22) International Student Enrollment Scranton has had a handful of international students over the past 5 years.

2017: 6 2018: 2 2019: 2 2020: No Information 2021: 7 Education Abroad Participation Overall, 12 students from Penn State Scranton have participated in Education Abroad programs in the last 5 years, all over the summer (either faculty-led or embedded).

Faculty-Led Programming Penn State Scranton has led 1 faculty-led freestanding program during the summer of 2019. It was canceled summer 2020 due to low enrollment (prior to the term cancellation due to COVID-19).

International Agreements at Penn State Scranton Overview Since 2015, Penn State Scranton has signed (4) international agreements and currently has two (2) active agreements. Additionally, Scranton has multiple international engagements with various institutions that have not required formalized agreements (see attached “Scranton Global Engagements 2017-2018” and “Scranton 2018 ARIA Additional Activities”).

Since 2015, the following agreements were signed, and Scranton provided feedback in response to our Annual Reports.

1.SECAB Institute of Engineering and Technology in India. MOU signed on May 5, 2018 and expires on May 5, 2023.

Feedback on 2018 ARIA: “This is a new agreement, and we are working on activating this MOU.” Feedback on 2019 ARIA: Scranton noted that the agreement should be allowed to expire in 2023.

Feedback on 2020 ARIA: “It is inactive at this point. I will follow-up with them shortly to assess their level of interest in activation or not, and I will update you on the outcome.”

Feedback on 2021 ARIA: “I am not aware of any students or faculty exchanges or research collaborations that took place at PSU Scranton as a result of this agreement. I would like to establish contact with SECAB to see if we can make it work for us. Kindly, provide me with such contact to give it a final opportunity for engagement. I would recommend allowing it to expire if my attempt to reach out and identify ways to make it work, fails.”

2. University of Guanajuato in Mexico.

Feedback on 2018 ARIA: Scranton noted that the agreement was still in the “Low/Early Stage”.

Feedback on 2019 ARIA: Scranton noted that they did not “have any information indicating that we are benefiting from this agreement.”

Feedback on 2020 ARIA: “I have no knowledge of its active status. I will check with Penn[y] Carlson who is listed as the contact person.”

3. University of Split in Croatia. ERASMUS agreement signed April 30, 2018 and expired July 31, 2019.

Feedback on 2018 ARIA: “This is a new agreement and some action is already taking place. We will report on such actions once they materialize for next year’s report.”

Feedback on 2019 ARIA: “We have one actively engaged faculty member who took a group of students through a study abroad course.

I am glad to see this agreement work for our faculty and students.” Additionally, Scranton requested agreement renewal.

Feedback on 2020 ARIA: “I have a faculty member who does research in collaboration with this university every summer and has made trips with students as well. I will check with her to assess her level of interest in continuing work with Univ. of Split and update you on the outcome. Martin Trethewey is the listed contact person.”

4. Vidyalankar School of Information Technology in India. Signed on July 25, 2016, and expired July 25, 2021.

Feedback on 2015 ARIA: In response to whether there was any new/continuing activity under the agreement, Chancellor Wafa stated “Three of the nine students recruited for Fall 2014 were enrolled at Penn State York. Of the six remaining students, three were designated for Penn State Berks and three for Penn State Hazelton.”

Additionally, he noted: “We graduated two IST students who came through this agreement. Both were very good students. We intend to get better use out of this and other agreements that are in place.”

Feedback on 2016 ARIA: “In our last ALC meeting, I signed the Vidyalankar School of Information Technology MOA on behalf of Worthington Scranton. We look forward to student and faculty exchanges in the future along with the 2+2 program.”

Feedback on 2018 ARIA: “We have not made use of this agreement due to lack of knowledge of its existence and the nature of such an agreement. We would like to learn about the details and contact information of our counterpart in India in order to make use of this MOU.” Feedback on 2019 ARIA: Scranton noted that they did not “have any information indicating that we are benefiting from this agreement.”

Feedback on 2020 ARIA: “I have no knowledge of its active status. I will check with Penn[y] Carlson who is listed as the contact person.”

Additionally, Penn State Scranton indicated that the agreement had low interest and requested that the agreement be allowed to expire in 2021. Because the agreement was initiated by Penn State York, even if Penn State Scranton is removed from the terms, it is possible that Penn State York and other University College campuses will request agreement renewal.

Additional Information for Penn State Scranton Along with Berks, Lehigh Valley, Schuylkill, Hazleton, and Wilkes-Barre, the Penn State Scranton campus is part of what is considered the Northeast region of the Commonwealth.

Fast Facts Dr. Marwan Wafa assumed the role of Chancellor in July 2015, following the retirement of Dr. Mary-Beth Krogh-Jespersen.

How many students are enrolled?

Roughly 1,000 students are enrolled at Penn State Scranton. Approximately 96% are Pennsylvania residents.

Majors Students have the option of starting and completing 13 undergraduate majors at Scranton, or beginning more than 275 majors at Scranton and completing them at University Park. Penn State Scranton also offers 5 Associate degree programs and a wide range of continuing education programs.

Where is it located?

Penn State Scranton is located on 45 acres just off Interstate 81 at Throop, Exit 188 and within driving distance of major metropolitan areas such as New York City and Philadelphia.

Does it have residence halls?

Penn State Scranton does not offer on-campus housing. However, privately-owned local housing is available.
