Further Context on Education Abroad at Abington (Dagmara Karnowski + Olga Moskaleva) The Office of Global Programs at Abington has been strengthening global intercultural experiences and exchanges for the past two years, even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Our efforts to globalize Abington have not stalled; we have instead adapted to this new virtual landscape. Below are some of our accomplishment for 2019-present: Attracted approximately 200 attendees for our annual Global Engagement Fair in 2019. Our faculty leading embedded programs took advantage of this event and recruited students for their programs. In 2020, we hosted a Zoom fair for the annual virtual Global Engagement Fair, highlighting our student organizations with global ties.

In 2019-2020 Abington became the first to obtain funding for students with disabilities on our embedded programs. This funding amounts of $20,000 remains with our Office to adapt our programming to students with disabilities.

Reorganized our student payment processes for embedded programs, incorporating the student payments to our Bursar accounts instead of our students paying the provider directly for a much more streamlined student experience.

Continued to develop opportunities to internationalize faculty curricula, obtaining $25,000 in funding for a faculty grant program. This program internationalizes curricula, emphasizes global competency outcomes for students, and is a bridge to developing future EDGE and embedded programs.

Collaborated with faculty to offer a virtual Global Climate Change Series for Abington in the Spring 2021, highlighting global climate crises in agriculture, coral reefs, forestry, and more.

Doubled our embedded program offerings from 2018-2019 to the present. For 2021-2022, we have 9 embedded programs scheduled including exploratory travel for future embedded program.

Developed International Teaching Week seminar series with Hof University of Applied Sciences in Germany. This seminar will connect 3 Abington faculty with Hof faculty and pave the way for future collaborations and EDGE programming with Hof for Fall 2021.

Joseph Oakes, one of our embedded faculty members, secured DAAD funding from the German government to revise global exchange capabilities and curricula.

Instituted an Office specific Starfish advising appointment system, which aligns with University Park scheduling and has streamlined study abroad advising.

Office hours for Education Abroad advising are as follows: Tuesday, 8-10am and 3-5pm Wednesday, 9-11am Thursday, 3-5pm Initiated development of education abroad scholarship in memory of a departed faculty member, Dr. Ross Brinkert. Dr. Brinkert was instrumental in fostering our relationship with our Japan partner, Seinan Gakuin University.

For the upcoming academic year, our Office will have the following priorities: Increase subsidies for education abroad Develop performance assessment framework for embedded programming Diversify offerings of locations and fields in embedded programs. We have already approved programs to locations never travelled to before at Abington (India and Ghana), but are looking to broaden the potential for global student engagement

International Agreements at Penn State Abington Penn State Abington (Abington) has four (4) active agreements. In 2021, Abington provided the following feedback in response to our Annual Report (ARIA).

1. Hof University of Applied Sciences in Germany. General MOU signed on October 10, 2019, and due to expire on October 10, 2024.

Feedback on ARIA: "We were creative and maintained our collaborations with Hof during the pandemic. We had multiple virtually teaching partnerships during the pandemic. We even had one faculty grant from the German government and pursued EDGE-like teaching engagement with Hof this April 2021.”

2. Seinan Gakuin University in Japan. General MOU signed on September 25, 2018, and due to expire on September 25, 2023.

Feedback on ARIA: “We have been extremely active in our engagement with Seinan. We have one embedded program from AB in collaboration with Seinan in Japan this March 22. In addition we have hosting 12 students from Seinan this March 22 as well.”

3. Hebei University of Science and Technology in China. General MOU signed on May 23, 2017, and due to expire on May 23, 2022.

Feedback on ARIA: “Received embedded program proposal that engages Hebei University of Science and Technology in 2020, but due to the pandemic, the program did not run. We would like to see what other collaborations we can continue with Hebei’s faculty and students.”

4. Hof University of Applied Sciences in Germany. Education Abroad undergraduate exchange MOA signed on April 15, 2006, with no expiration date.

Feedback on ARIA: “Despite the pandemic, we still had many students that showed interest and apply to the semester long exchange program to Hof. Unfortunately, we had to cancel to the pandemic. We would like to continue the relationship and grow our exchange between our two institutions.”
