In South Korea, a variety of debates and discussions are taking place about building a welfare state. Intellectuals, civil societies, and political parties with diverse ideological and political positions are participating in the current "welfare state debates" in Korea. The discussions will probably be one of the most polemic issues in the upcoming 2012 parliamentary and presidential elections. These are important social and policy agendas that concern the future of the Korean society.

We are pleased to invite you to the "International Symposium: Asking the Way to Welfare State in South Korea" co-organized by Institute for Participatory Society(IPS) and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung(FES) Korea Office and Hankyoreh Institute for Social Policy(HISP) to be held on October 14, 2011 in Seoul.

Through the symposium, we hope to draw practical lessons from the emergence, development and transformation of the European welfare states. We expect to gain knowledge on the specificities of historical trajectories and institutional arrangements of East Asian welfare states, articulating the ideas and models of welfare state pertaining to Korea. We look forward to specifying crucial agendas and strategies for enlarging and consolidating welfare coalition in Korean society.
