In 2007, I flew to Haiti to complete a survey for the design of an orphanage. Little did I know that 7 years later I would have another experience with surveying in a foreign land. I moved from Illinois to Pennsylvania!

While the underlying principles of the land surveying profession are fairly constant, the past two years have been a real learning experience for me. Coming from a sectionalized state to a metes-and-bounds commonwealth has given me a greater appreciation for what I have learned from first surveying boss, Tom Sheets. During my job interview in his home office back in 1985, Tom explained the art of surveying was “like a jig-saw puzzle … but you get to trim the pieces”. While that was true for surveying in the Chicago suburbs, it is paramount in Western PA.

For the 29 years prior to my move to Pennsylvania all of my professional experience was in Northern Illinois. All of the land in Illinois is either a part of a section, or a lot in a subdivision. While there can be some difficulty in retracing a section where corners are lost or obliterated, there is always a “framework” to work from. This “framework” aspect of surveying in Illinois applied to the standards of practice and statutory requirements as well. Replacing section corners in the course of a survey is required by the Illinois Land Survey Monument Act. Setting concrete monuments for at least two subdivision corners and monumenting subdivided lots is required by the Illinois Plat Act. The specifics regarding the preparation of boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and writing legal descriptions are all defined in the “framework” of the Illinois Minimum Standards of Practice.
