SCHOOL HIGHLIGHT…

A LEVEL STUDENTS GET A TASTE OF UNIVERSITY LIFE

On Wednesday 12 January, all A Level Chemistry students at SGS spent a day at the University of Sussex Chemistry Department working on their required practicals - an essential part of the A Level course. The students had the chance to experience the life of a University student for the day with practical tasks in the undergraduate laboratories - the Year 12 students synthesised ethanal and the Year 13 students synthesised ethyl ethanoate - the flavouring in pear drop sweets! The students then analysed the purity of their products and their results were particularly impressive. After a chance to explore the leafy Sussex campus and lunch, the students had lectures on medicinal chemistry from Prof John Spencer and former SGS student Dr Barny Greenland who explained his research on self-healing polymers. All of the students really enjoyed the trip and were congratulated on their conduct and results in the laboratory by the lab supervisor, Dr James Stubbing.

GAME-CHANGING SELBY BROTHERS WIN TOP RESTAURANT AWARD

Former SGS students, Luke, Nathaniel, Theo and Reuben Selby are “game-changing” brothers who are making waves in their respective industries. The brothers are all successful in their own right. Luke, Nathaniel and Theo are successful chefs and are becoming well-known names within the hospitality industry. Luke has picked up a number of awards including National Chef of the Year and the prestigious Roux Scholarship in 2017. This year the brothers’ restaurant in London’s Soho, Evelyn’s Table, won a coveted Michelin star and for the first time all three chefs picked up the Michelin Young Chef of the Year award. The guide commented on “the infectious enthusiasm for their craft”. Luke told BETTER Times: “It was amazing to receive the young chef award from Michelin, not just for me but to be able to share it as a joint award with my brothers is incredibly special. It’s recognition for all the hard work that we’ve all put into Evelyn’s Table and our journey so far.” “I’m a naturally competitive person. I push myself to be the best I can and compete against myself not looking to others but inwards to realise the potential that I have in me. If you never try, you’ll never know what you’re capable of.” Not to be outdone, younger brother Reuben is carving out a successful career in the fashion industry and has most recently showcased his line of clothing at London Fashion Week in February 2022.
