Hello ShortFest Community, Earlier this year (and like so many other organizations), we were tasked with reimagining the festival experience. What could and should ShortFest look like in the middle of a global pandemic? How could we help our community stay connected during these trying times? There was no question that the safety of filmmakers, patrons, and our staff was at the center of our concerns. Our priority was finding a way to share safely and virtually the amazing stories and voices that moved us during the film selection process, a process that was well underway since October 2019. Pivoting online was a necessary adjustment if we wanted to continue our mission of bringing cinema to an audience, and an audience to filmmakers. Fortunately, we were in a position to provide a festival experience that was accessible and easily navigable. We invited 330+ amazing short films to participate in our Official Selection, 100+ of which were available to screen directly from your homes, free of charge. We put more films in competition for awards than we had in the past, and invited more jurors than we had ever hosted previously. Additionally, our ShortFest Forum was available to filmmakers and the public, a first after many years. It was a true community experience. In this guide, you’ll get a sense of what ShortFest 2020 looked like, the films we selected, the sessions we hosted, and the people who made it all happen. Poolside chats under the desert sun were put on hold this year, but we remain grateful that we got to share the festival online with you all. The Forum, which took place June 16-22, 2020 consisted of virtual panels and roundtables featuring industry representatives, filmmakers, and additional guests. Shortfest is dedicated to providing a space to facilitate connections between creators, industry, and our audience. Hi Clay. I wanted to thank you and all the Palm Springs ShortFest staff for such a fantastic experience last week. The online forums, webinars and roundtables were so inspiring and inclusive. I loved every one and I think I watched more short films than I would have been able to had I attended the fest in person. I really appreciate all the hard work that went into making the festival work digitally. I hope that more festivals moving forward take your admirable lead. Thank you again. I really appreciate it. All the best for you and your loved ones.

Most sincere thanks to the Palm Springs staff for putting this festival together amid a pandemic and all the talented filmmakers in this group! It was an absolute delight to watch all the films in the past week and my god, so much wonderful talent and voices everywhere!! I hope that I get to see some of you under the California sun next year.

I feel like I just got home from vacation, the films and panels this week transported me far from my living room and that’s very much appreciated! My plan is to keep watching until the wheels fall off at 9am PST and if you’re looking for some scares to stream late-night may I humbly suggest Biters, it’s directed by me and really good. Thank you to the Palm Springs Film Society, the staff, volunteers and all the filmmakers for this unique ShortFest 2020 experience!

Palm Springs International ShortFest 2020 truly set the president for all festivals during this pandemic. The way the hard-working team managed this whole thing, the happy half hours, the lovely forums, the meetings and constantly updating us with information and making everyone feel so welcome was nothing short of grace. It has been an incredible experience ad what an amazing lineup of films. Big Congrats to the all winners, we are very humbled to have got the Special Mention Award at this lovely festival, we look forward to connecting with you all next year! Congrats to all the winners! And to the Palm Springs International Film Festival team for winning at the pivot to virtual film festival. You guys are the ones that every other festival needs to learn from (seriously, give a masterclass to all other festival directors). You managed to create an incredible experience for filmmakers, still create networking/ mentorship opportunities, and make us feel celebrated in the world’s crappiest time. Pulling this off in a matter of weeks must have been insanely hard. A BIG THANK YOU!!

Hi everyone! As I’m sitting in rainy Brussels tonight, I can’t tell you how much I would have loved being with all of you in Palm Springs. I was there two years ago I believe with my previous film and it was undoubtedly one of the best festivals I ever attended. Take care all of you! And hopefully we’ll meet soon!

An absolutely wonderful experience, despite it being virtual this year. The first time around I just wanted to listen and participate so this is a perfect opportunity to take notes.
