Advice for Recruitment

Words of Advice from the Recruitment Advisory Board:

TALK TO AS MANY ACTIVE MEMBERS AS POSSIBLE

“It is so important to speak with a lot of actives. A really good impression on only a few brothers doesn't mean as much as an overall good impression on a lot of active members.”

- Ryan Talbot, RAB Member

ARRIVE AS YOURSELF

“It can be scary to put yourself out there but not only does it help us learn more about you, it is also the best way to see if you think that PSE is a good fit for you.”

- Charlotte Dixon, VP of Recruitment for 2021-22

“Just be yourself. We want to get to know the real you and get to know your true passions and goals in life. Recruitment immediately becomes more fun and much easier and you are able to build genuine, strong connections with the people you speak with.”

- Rami Matarieh, Incoming VP of Recruitment for 2022-23

CONNECT WITH OTHER POTENTIAL MEMBERS

“We want our new member classes to be really close with each other. So, demonstrate this during recruitment events by not only connecting with active members, but other potential new members.”

- Ryan Talbot, RAB Member

INCOMING VP OF RECRUITMENT

Interview with Rami

An Interview with Rami Matarieh, Incoming VP of Recruitment:

Rami Matarieh Iota Class

THIS YEAR, YOU WERE ALSO A PART OF THE RECRUITMENT ADVISORY BOARD. WHAT MADE YOU APPLY FOR RAB?

A: “I initially joined RAB because I wanted to see the other side to how recruitment works. During my own recruitment, I really enjoyed the various events and I could tell how much work was going on behind the scenes of it. I wanted to be apart of that behind-the-scenes work and help the next recruitment class join PSE!”

YOU RAN A SPEED NETWORKING EVENT THIS SEMESTER, HOW WAS IT?

A: “I had so much fun running it! There were a few challenges throughout the event like people going to the wrong groups or some people showing up late but I had lots of fun dealing with these unforeseen challenges. I enjoy managing stressful and unpredictable situations such as this one, and in fact, it was during that event that I realized that I wanted to run for VP of Recruitment!”

AS YOU STEP INTO THE NEW ROLE OF VP OF RECRUITMENT NEXT SEMESTER, WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR?

A: “I am most excited for meeting the potential new class and leaving my mark on PSE as a whole. I cannot wait to work with the new RAB team, plan challenging yet fun events, and create presentations that hopefully hundreds of potential new members will see. I truly want to make this next recruitment season the best PSE has ever had, and that starts with the potential new members genuinely enjoying their time at the events.

Altogether, my goal for this year is to have the best new class PSE has had and topping the work and success that Charlotte has accomplished will be difficult, but I am so excited for the challenge!”

THE THE THE Kappa Kappa Kappa Class Class Class

With a new school year underway, 27 eager students were selected to be a part of the Kappa Class of Pi Sigma Epsilon at Indiana University. This select group of individuals each has something unique to offer and we cannot wait to see all they accomplish as part of our Chapter!

Potential New Members embarked on a seven-week long New Member Education Process immersing themselves in professionalism, relationship building, interviewing, networking, and social events to eventually become an active member!

New Member Education (NME) took place twice a week for a span of seven weeks. Kappas were able to create close bonds while also learning to be confident future business professionals. Kappas also were required to interview four active members each week, participate in community service, raise funds for the organization, and also interview a PSE alumni!

"I made so many friends with people I wouldn't have normally met and pushed myself out of my comfort zone."

~ Pooja Chowbey

Freshman Erica Gruesser was able to build her communication skills through NME

"The weekly interviews with actives helped me to be much less shy and more outgoing and personal. Writing emails to actives each week to schedule these interviews was also great practice in time management, scheduling, and professionalism. My resume also is much more refined!"

Members were required to pursue and host a social event each week to ensure bonds were being formed and to see one another in a more relaxed environment.

Sophomore Tiffany Zhang's favorite social event was "the Halloween party at JJ's. We had a full-on photo shoot and it was just so funny."

In terms of professional development, Kappas experienced a vast array of areas to expand on their skills.

Sophomore Aadi Dogra expands on his own growth.

"Through NME, I learned how to be patient with my answers and process the question before beginning to speak. Additionally, I realized how important it was to reference my resume to provide examples when describing my skills in an interview."

Members first got a glimpse at PSE from the recruitment cycle events they attended. Freshman Mia Wayne exclaims how,

"Everyone was SO. NICE. I can’t stress this enough, the inclusive energy RAB provided during the recruitment process was like no other, and after professional fraternity night I knew I was going to apply to PSE."

All in all, we are extremely excited to welcome this group of energetic and bright individuals into Pi Sigma Epsilon at Indiana University. They are the future of our Chapter and we all know they will go on to do great things!

Kappa retreat Kappa retreat Kappa retreat

This semester, Kappas were able to attend the terrorizing and immersive haunted attraction, The Thirteenth Hour in Indianapolis!

"I learned that being completely scared out of your mind is one way to bring people together."

- Haylie Polakoff, Sophomore

"It was a blast, especially with Joey since he was the most easily spooked"

- Brendan Doherty, Junior

Kappas were separated into small groups and faced a thrilling haunted house where members were forced to rely on one another to make it out - in one piece.

This event quickly became a highlight for so many; let's dive into what made this experience so memorable.

"My favorite memory by far was the Haunted house retreat. I was put into a group with Pooja, Maggie, Brendan, and most importantly Joey. I have not laughed as much as I did this night in a very long time. Joey was absolutely petrified the entire time, which made the rest of us laugh, especially when he was targeted by the actors.

At one point, I remember one of the monsters broke out of character and couldn't resist laughing because of how terrified Joey was when she popped out. This night allowed us to all grow a lot closer and I am so grateful that Connie set up this experience!"

- Kallie Nero, Sophomore

"Everyone was clinging on to each other and at one point we started trying to force the other people in our group to go into each room first because all of us were too scared to enter."

- Damini Rao, Sophomore

Junior Connie Lee stepped in this semester as Director of New Member Education Her role involved leading the Kappas at every NME session, overseeing their progress, and also teaching them about PSE history.

When asked about the Kappas, Lee exclaimed "What makes the Kappa class different from all the other classes we've had is their incredible wit and hilarious sass. The banter we all had during NME was top notch and I wouldn't have traded it for anything else."

Lee's favorite part of the position was simply just watching the Kappas develop in their own ways. "I loved seeing their friendships grow over the course of the last seven weeks and I am truly proud of how much they've been able to accomplish."

Messages from Messages from Messages from the Kappas the Kappas the Kappas

"She always makes sure to keep us engaged and tries to make it a little more lighthearted. Additionally, Connie does her best to get through the material efficiently while still covering all the important aspects."

"Connie is the best."

- Lauren Sheppard

"She was funny, kind, and allowed us to learn a lot of valuable information throughout the process!"

- Gowri Salem

"I could tell she truly cared about how our recruitment class bonded, and was passionate about teaching the culture of PSE and everything the organization stands for."

- Aadi Dogra

"Loved it. Loved her. Loved everything, mom for life <3"

- Mia Wayne

She always found ways to make things engaging - like getting George for our class to protect or planning a trip to a haunted house!

- Erica Gruesser

Connie made NME very fun and overall open and inclusive.

PSE Boat Day

Towards the end of September, a few of the most daring PSE members set off on a journey to Bloomington’s one and only Lake Monroe…

The journey wasn’t an easy one – they were faced with obstacles such as Ryan Dalkin’s boat driving and a lot of Pitbull Unbothered by the 55-degree weather – brothers plunged into the depths of Lake Monroe for a swim across Bloomington’s trusty waters.

It was great! Until I lost my glasses..

Beasley's Pumpkin Orchard

When the leaves begin to change to vibrant oranges and rich reds, members know it's time for the annual PSE tradition... traveling through the middle of nowhere to go to a hidden gem in Danville, Indiana: Beasley's Orchard!

Members enjoyed delightful caramel apple cider slushies, fresh from the orchard!

Junior Sahil Tanna discovered a hidden talent: sharp shooting apples from a cannon. He was able to hit 3 of 5 targets, including the farthest one twice!

Junior Ryan Talbot's favorite moment involved "jumping on the bounce pads when me and fellow PSE members were the only people above 12 years old!"

Fall photo shoots for social media with pumpkins = a must.

DIRECTOR OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT | RHEA MATLAPUDI

Professional Development Events

The Gartner professional development event took place on October 24th, 2022. The chapter was given the opportunity to hear from a recruiter at Gartner on the best way to negotiate deals providing valuable insight. Brothers were also able to ask the recruiter a variety of questions from gaining tips for recruiting to what stands out to recruiters. The event was extremely informative and engaging!

The KPMG event took place on September 22, 2022. Brothers were given the opportunity to learn more about KPMG and the various opportunities they offer. There was also a panel of current employees of KPMG in different stages of their careers, so the chapter was able to ask questions and get a diverse set of perspectives on various topics such as life after college, work-life balance, and what a typical workday looks like at KPMG.

The Heritage Group professional development event took place on September 8, 2022. Our members learned about the Heritage Group, and the various opportunities available to work there either through an internship or through a full-time role. They were also able to learn about the recruitment timeline and get any question they had related to this answered!

“I am personally proud of the BINGO boards. We’ve seen a lot more member engagement this semester. I think because we’ve implemented points being associated. This is great because it means that more members are taking better care of themselves.”

A President's Farewell

JuniorAbbyNagelservedasthe2021-22ChapterPresidentofPSEatIU.

Thiseditionmarksthefinaldaysofherrole,here'swhatshehastosay:

This is not an easy farewell, as I reminisce on the incredible growth of our organization over the last year made possible by the passionate members of our leadership team, and the invaluable feedback and support from all of you

My team was driven by a passion for our community that enabled them to promote positive growth I am honored to have worked alongside them and supported them in their initiatives Working with this passionate team helped me grow as a leader and brother, for which I will always be grateful I am especially thankful to my executive board, whose dedication and perseverance allowed us to accomplish much more than originally thought possible.

While this is a very challenging position, my love for our organization and all of you in it motivated me to be my best every day to improve your time in PSE. I want to thank you all for your help, feedback, and trust over the past year– it is the primary reason for the leadership team’s success. Looking forward, I have the utmost confidence in the next team and I am elated to see what they do Although my official term is ending, know that I am always available to you as a resource, friend, and brother. Thank you for the amazing opportunity to serve as your President.

With love,

Dear PSE,

It's your brother Christine studying abroad in Milan, Italy. During this past semester, I amazing opportunity to continue my academics in Italy while also traveling all over Europe have traveled to Greece, Switzerland, England, Germany, Hungary, Spain, and of course, all over Italy Studying abroad in Milan, Italy made it very easy and affordable to travel all over Europe My most happy buy was my $24 round trip tickets to London! My traveling tip is to always take the plane to travel to other countries and buy your tickets early (unless to Switzerland which is one hour train away from Milan!) Taking the plane is usually cheaper, has less traveling time, is on time, and is more comfortable When in doubt, take the plane I have heard too many horror stories about the trains!

Coming to Italy exposed me to different lifestyles After going through my 6 stages of grief of ditching my morning venti caramel macchiato from Starbucks, I have learned to love my morning cappuccino and Nutella croissant—although I have yet to accept a dark expresso shot every morning The sweet Nutella gushing out of the crunchy yet, soft and buttery croissant paired with a creamy coffee has become a staple in my diet I fear I will be desperately scouting for my breakfast replacement in every store in Bloomington One of the biggest challenges I faced in Italy is learning how the academic system works here For instance, Italian students do not study at cafes or have common areas to study Most Italian students study at home As someone who relies on studying outside their apartment to stay focused, this was like a pothole on the street I'm driving through A New York rat eating cheese on my foot in the subway station Despite the disturbing imagery I put into your head, I 100% recommend studying aboard if you have any doubts!

Studying aboard allowed me to experience different cultures and meet people from all over the world

Continuing your studies abroad is once in a lifetime experience where you get to focus on academics, travel, and embrace a new culture The best part is tuition is usually cheaper if you are an out-ofstate student— housing is included! Alternatively, Kelley and the study abroad program at IU have scholarships every year to support students studying aboard Feel free to contact me if you are interested in studying abroad sometime in your college career and want to learn more about my experience I look forward to meeting the Kappas soon! ;)

Tips for Professional Recruitment

1.

Doresearch beforehand

Research the company online and get a better understanding of its mission and values, and identify points of connection with your own The best company is one in which you see parts of yourself reflected in. Try and find unique programs the company offers or campaigns and initiatives the organization is involved with. Knowing all this will enable you to have a more memorable conversation with the recruiter!

3. Create a Solid First Impression

While it may sound cheesy, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Demonstrate interest and ask relevant questions whenever you can It is essential to listen to recruiters as they speak to you so you can respond engagingly and authentically Try to remain within the moment and have a genuine conversation!

2.

Prepare Specific Questions

When asking questions, it is essential to balance authenticity and simplicity; disingenuous actions are easy to spot. Avoid asking an overly broad question that could be answered with a simple Google search - this can show a lack of research and effort. Ask about the experiences of your interviewers, as well as why they specifically chose a career at that company.

4. Know your resume thoroughly

Prepare stories using the S.T.A.R. format to share your experiences in a compelling way that demonstrates the skills you gained from them Be honest in your responses; do not exaggerate. Recruiters often ask difficult questions about your previous experiences, and exaggerating your accomplishments may trip you up in an interview

SPEA Tables

A place where members gather in between classes to catch up with one another and complete "assignments"! More than a table.

The Top 5 Restaurants in Bloomington, IN

1: Osteria Rago

Note:Myrecommendationsaremeanttoguide yourfoodjourney,butremembertoexplore

This quaint Italian restaurant tops my list because of the formal ambiance that makes you feel like you’re in a high-end restaurant, the excellent homemade Italian food, and the great service The waiter was timely and extremely knowledgeable about the food I ordered the fettuccine alfredo with blackened salmon, which may have been the best pasta I have ever had The salmon was crispy on the outside but moist and flaky on the inside The menu is a little pricey, however, so be prepared to spend more than usual.

2: Siam House

Looking for an authentic Thai experience? Siam house is a great option here in Bloomington I absolutely loved the green and red curries here, along with the chicken pad thai The green curry was enriched with just the right amount of coconut milk, and had a nice balance of sweetness and spicyness The food was absolutely fresh and exploding with flavor The service was efficient and friendly, with pretty great indoor/outdoor seating The food is well-priced too!

3: India Garden

While there are a few great Indian restaurants in Bloomington, India Garden was by far my favorite Due to Covid-19, they are currently operating through mobile orders only, but their food is authentic and delicious The butter chicken, saag paneer, and garlic naan were all extremely flavorful and filled with depth Indian food is a group affair; curries are meant to be shared family style, with everyone trying some of everything My recommendation? Order with a group of friends and try a variety of dishes!

Turquaz Cafe

A humble cafe serving some of the best Turkish cuisines I’ve had in Bloomington I absolutely loved their gyros and the classic Pides, similar to pizzas I could tell the Pides were freshly baked, with a warm fluffy crust with the perfect amount of crispiness at the edges My Pide was covered in spinach, cheese, and delicious ground meat They have a great ambiance with traditional seating, a room of blankets, pillows, and extremely short tables Sit on the ground, sip on some authentic Turkish coffee, and enjoy delicious food at a reasonable price

Nick's English Hut

In the mood for some classic American bar food? Nick’s is a great option! A historic restaurant that has been open for 8 decades, they have a plethora of delectable options, from spicy wings to some amazing stromboli The staff is extremely friendly, and the atmosphere is usually bustling with college bar energy Nick’s is a great option for anyone looking to eat some great food while watching a game

All Things Bloomington

After almost 4 years of living in Bloomington, I have accumulated a list of various things I recommend trying out while you're here. This list consists of places to go, things to do, tips, and more!

Griffy Lake

Highly recommend checking it out at least once! Especially during the summer and fall months when the weather is warmer (I went when it was colder out)

Explore the Tops of Parking Garages

Something fun to do with friends, especially if you want to see some cool views. This was taken on top of the Park on Morton garage but the Kelley Garage is also another one I've been to.

Be safe and make sure it's allowed before you do it!

When I went, I had a picnic on the dock with friends. It was super relaxing and the views of the lake and forest were beautiful! Afterwards, we explored the hiking trails.

Play with Puppies at College Mall

For My Fellow Movie Lovers

Anthony's Pets is located inside College Mall. Getting out puppies and playing with them was one of my favorite stress relievers, especially during finals or midterm week

If you love seeing new movies like me and enjoy going to the movie theatre, I HIGHLY recommend becoming an AMC Stub's A-List member!

Perks:

See 3 FREE movies per week

FREE popcorn refills & size upgrades

10% back on all purchases

$20/month (You make back your money after only 2 movies)

Tip:

The Comedy Attic

A MUST DO before you graduate. Tickets are VERY affordable and is great to see with friends or family.

Seats are usually first come first serve so get there early to sit closer to the front!

The comedians often engage with and "pick on" members in the audience which makes for a great interactive experience

Yogi's Hidden Back Room Area

For the 21+ crowd, try their alcoholic Root Beer Float (you won't regret it)

I had no clue of this area's existence until this year. The aesthetics and vibes are super cool and has several games such as Billiards (pool), Shuffle Board, and more.

Make the Most Out of a Snowy Day

Winter is finally here which means we'll soon be dealing with lots of snow. To make the most out of a snowy day, I thought I'd share what my friends and I did last year when we got snowed in!

We decided to do a group sleepover in one of our living rooms and gathered lots of food, games, movies, and other activities to make the time go by faster.

One consisted of going sledding using sleds we bought from the store, a couple of pieces of rope, and attached it to our friend's car to ride around the neighborhood
