Welcome to the 2020 edition of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce City Guide. If the publication looks a little different to you than in previous years, it’s because my creative team and I have made great strides to bring you something bright and fresh for this new year of a new decade.

What hasn’t changed is that the Chamber’s board, staff, and I continue to work diligently on behalf of our members, making every effort to provide tools and resources needed to help you attract an ever-expanding clientele while keeping your current customers entirely satisfied.

Through these pages you’ll hear from our current Board President John Fritch and learn more about the creative team behind this magazine. We’ll introduce you to the staff members without whom the Chamber could not exist. We’ll also tell you all about our recently unveiled new Co-Work space above West Elm downtown. We’ll not only let you in on city and Chamber events held throughout the year that may be of great interest and benefit to you, but tell you more about six new enterprises that are changing the face of Palm Springs for the better, ensuring that our city’s future is brighter than ever. Just for fun, we’ve included a story about our booming music scene. And of course, at the end of this book you’ll find our business directory, listing all of our current members by category. Refer to it often in the coming months, especially when you’re in the market for particular goods or services.

Last but not least, look for our quarterly publication, Poolside Palm Springs, a joint effort between the Chamber and the city of Palm Springs. It, too, includes fun facts and useful information that will improve the quality of your life in the desert.

In addition to serving as the editor/writer of the Chamber’s annual City Guide, Daniel is a freelance writer and editor who has been bringing words and people together for decades. While his favored topics are arts & entertainment, culture, health, and travel, he prides himself on his ability to write absolutely anything for anyone. His work has appeared in such publications as the Los Angeles Times, Forbes, Huffington Post, The Advocate, Out, Healthy Living, Metrosource, RM Magazine, and Palm Springs Life. Currently also serving as the editor of Poolside Palm Springs, a quarterly magazine published in partnership between the Chamber and the city of Palm Springs, Daniel is an accomplished gala scriptwriter as well. Some of his credits in this area include the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Film Awards Gala, Desert AIDS Project’s Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, the GLAAD Media Awards, PFLAG’s Straight For Equality Awards, and many other non-profit benefits.

Though Maru currently works full-time as the production/advertising specialist at Bennion Deville Homes, one of the leading independent real estate brokerage firms in Southern California, she is also an in-demand freelancer who has designed a variety of publications and advertisements—with an emphasis on visitor guides and lifestyle titles. A native of Mexico City, she earned her bachelor’s degree in graphic design from that city’s Intercontinental University.

In addition to being the creative force behind the visuals of this City Guide, she has led the design of such publications as Poolside Palm Springs (a quarterly magazine published in partnership between the Chamber and the city of Palm Springs), The Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce Annual City Guide, The Palm Springs International Film Festival Guide, Escape to the Southeast Travel Guide, and others. While at Desert Publications, she was the art director for Desert Guide, Houston Visitors Guide, and Pebble Beach The Magazine.

Though also a working writer, David’s main focus is photography. Fortunate to be introduced to the art by his father, who worked for Eastman Kodak, David got the opportunity to experiment in high school, and had his first solo show of fine art photography at Provident National Bank in Philadelphia soon after graduating from Cairn University. Today, there’s literally nothing David will not or cannot shoot— from people and products to real estate and special events. Having been the official photographer for the Palm Springs International Film Festival, he currently serves in that capacity for Modernism Week, Dezart Performs, and Cinema Diverse. Voted Best Event Photographer in Palm Springs’ 2016 Ultimate Pride List, David has had his work published in such outlets as the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Huffington Post, Dwell, Out, Traveler, The Desert Sun, RM Magazine, Palm Springs Life, and Poolside Palm Springs. a moment with Chamber Board President John Fritch The man is a small-business owner at heart.

What would you say to potential members who are still on the fence about joining?

If you look at the cost of joining for one year compared to the cost of one print ad for one month, membership pays for itself with all the tools and resources at your disposal. It’s just a great value. All you have to do is make sure to use those tools and resources, and the Chamber makes that so easy.

You’ve been a Chamber member for four years, you’ve sat on its board for three, and you’ve been president since June 2019. Why are you such a champion of the Palm Springs Chamber?

It’s simple. Our Chamber just does so much for its members. It gives us tools to grow our business. I love working with other entrepreneurs, so I just knew I wanted to become more involved.

What keeps you in Palm Springs?

I used to come to Palm Springs all the time as a kid. I love its diversity. Everyone can be themselves. It’s just such a welcoming environment—and a great place to do business.

I mean, what other cities are just constantly growing like Palm Springs is? We see our membership grow every year, and my business itself grows every year. I really think we live in a recession-proof city. I don’t want to live or work anywhere else.

A chat with photographer Sean McGee

“The Painted River”

Las Vegas-born Sean McGee has lived in the Coachella Valley since he was four. Tapped to shoot the cover of the Chamber’s 2020 City Guide was “really exciting and an honor” for the 23-year-old.

We caught up with the young man, who developed a passion for photography just four years ago.

City Guide: How did you fall into photography in the first place?

Sean McGee: It all started on Instagram, taking photos every day with my cell phone and then editing them through different apps. My dad knew I loved to take photos, so he bought me my first camera—which was a Canon Rebel T3i—when I was 19. Since that point on, photography has been my one love.

CG: What are your favorite subjects?

SM: Landscapes, families, my buddy Federico Carillo, concerts, and dogs.

SM: Palm Springs’ amazing scenery is truly what inspires me—the amazing sunrises, San Jacinto mountains, and the art all over downtown.

If there ever was an all-encompassing position, this is it. Brittne provides administrative, organizational, and clerical support on all special events—from Tuesday Lead$ Lunches, mixers, and ribboncuttings to the Business Expo & Taste of Palm Springs, Athena Awards, State of the City, Police & Fire Recognition Dinner, Business Awards and Board Installation Luncheon, and Walk of the Stars Palm Springs dedications. She’s also responsible for all membership accounts and activities; oversees the Chamber’s website, calendar of events, and social media presence; supervises marketing, membership sales, and ad sales; assists with the management of the Co-Work space; and coordinates the production and distribution of the monthly e-newsletter and e-blasts. When she’s not working on behalf of members and their clientele, Brittne takes care of her four-year-old son Jesse and one-year-old daughter Rio. Running and hiking in and around Palm Springs are just two of her favorite pastimes.

Michael’s roles are varied at the Chamber. As the manager of the Co-Work spaces, he is responsible for agreements, sales, marketing, and planning. He is also the person who oversees the visitors center, and offers lobby services assistance to walk-in, phone, and email customers and members.

Always ready to lend support to administration, special events, member services, and Chamber programs, he loves nothing more than to jump into the fray on special projects, as needed. A big fan of travel, global cuisine, and all things midcentury modern, Michael lives with his partner, Kevin, and their two dogs, Bailey and Gretl.

Jeff’s primary duty is to manage and produce the Walk of the Stars Palm Springs—from nomination services and committee oversight to star dedication planning, marketing, social media, website/app development and maintenance, and media engagement. He also oversees the Chamber’s Ambassador Program, a group comprised of representatives from member businesses. Jeff—who also works with other valley chambers to organize the Joint Chamber Mixer each May—recently became a Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA), which involves staying abreast of all the amazing opportunities and attractions the desert offers not only to millions of visitors annually but to residents. A longtime vegetarian for whom music is a particular passion, Jeff also enjoys great conversations about politics, history, civics, and culture. A social media aficionado, he also loves writing, video production, and amateur photography.

David’s chief responsibility is attracting new members. The Kentucky native therefore attends many of the events the Chamber presents, including Tuesday Lead$ Lunches and monthly evening mixers. David also helps sell advertising in the Chamber’s publications: the annual City Guide, the monthly newsletter, and Poolside Palm Springs (a quarterly publication produced in tandem with the city of Palm Springs). A supreme networker, David attends many of the city’s gatherings, such as Palm Springs Pride and Desert AIDS Project’s AIDS Walk.

A single, singular sports aficionado, he loves to laugh and to be social. Go Wildcats!

The building that houses the Chamber’s many activities was built in 1957 expressly for the Chamber on land from Pearl McManus. It’s a 3,000-square-foot, single-story structure—designed by architect Joe Kiktavi—that we own free and clear.

What’s the best part of your job? Having had the opportunity to improve access to Eisenhower Health services across the valley and to continually strengthen the quality of care that we deliver to this very diverse desert community. It’s given me enormous pride.

What is the biggest challenge? Maintaining the highest level of quality care in an ever-changing healthcare environment where costs continue to rise and reimbursement for services provided continues to decrease. As a not-for-profit organization, we’re very thankful for the support of the community and the generosity of an incredible group of donors and of so many grateful patients.

How long have you been in the desert, and how long at Eisenhower? My husband, Jeff Weyant, and I have owned a home in the desert for 19 years and moved here full-time 11 years ago when I started working at Eisenhower. Our only regret in the 30 years we’ve been together is that we didn’t make Palm Springs our home sooner!

What keeps you here? The dynamic, talented,

and diverse group of people that make Palm Springs not only a fantastic place to live and work but arguably one of the most amazing cities in California. The physical beauty is breathtaking but it’s the open and welcoming community that makes it truly special for me.

What advice would you give other entrepreneurs and executives? There is

Agua Caliente Cultural Center Set to open in late 2020 and spread over 5.8 acres in downtown Palm Springs, the Agua Caliente Cultural Center will honor the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians’ history, culture, traditions, and modern-day activities. Features include a 48,000-square-foot Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, a 40,000-square-foot spa named The Spa at Séc-he (boasting naturally healing waters from the ancient Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring the Tribe has shared with visitors for more than 120 years), and numerous outdoor activity spaces, including a gathering plaza accessed by landscaped terraces and pathways.

Launched in 2015, USCAP’s Interactive Learning Center downtown—unique in the nation—is a purpose-built facility for the ongoing education of pathologists, or medical doctors who diagnose disease. USCAP attracts thousands of these MDs from around the globe. They come to study in USCAP’s microscopy labs with leading physician educators imported from

institutions like University of Texas’ MD Anderson Cancer Center, Yale, and Harvard. As the Italian restaurant celebrates its first anniversary of success in downtown Palm Springs, we catch up with Chef/Owner Claudio Marfia.

While he most often is found making magia (magic) in the kitchen, Marfia, 34, also relishes spending time in the dining room, which he designed with friend Chris Pardo.

“I love meeting my guests face to face,” he says. Here, wood, stone, and leather combine to evoke the old barn houses of his hometown of Montevarchi in Tuscany, Italy.

While the vast majority of Italian restaurants in the Coachella Valley— and across the U.S.—have Americanmade pizza ovens, Il Corso boasts a Morello Forni from Naples, the birthplace of pizza.

A long overdue catch-up visit with Owner Rob Giesecke and Entertainment Director Tiffany Kane/Jacob Brinnand was well worth the wait.

Local artist Daniel Tousignant—who owns Geras Tousignant Gallery on North Palm Canyon Drive with husband James Geras— created “Mercury Rising,” the lifesize mirrorball mirror and rhinestone male figure that hovers over the main bar. He also oversaw Chill Bar’s 2019 interior design renovation and painted the “Neon Chill” mural that welcomes guests onto the dancefloor.

Kane/Brinnand and Giesecke pride themselves on Chill Bar Palm Springs’ staunch commitment to diversity. No other business in the desert can claim to have gay owners (Giesecke and husband Bill Vastardis), a straight ally general manager (Shawn Carter), and a trans couple next-in-command (Kane/ Brinnand and Artistic Director Anya Camins-Brinnand, the first trans woman to hold the title of Desert AIDS Project’s Queen of the Desert).

When Chill Bar—their favorite watering hole in town—went on the market in 2017, the couple, who had always wanted to be in the bar biz, snapped it up, investing a small fortune not only in its décor and furnishings but on improving its lighting and sound system to make it a dance palace to rival all others.

From Nomination to Dedication The Walk of the Stars Process

N

otable individuals or couples in the fields of Entertainment, Sports, Philanthropy, Civics, Literature, the Military, or Architecture/Art/Design—whose work has contributed to the enrichment of Palm Springs— may be nominated for a place on the Walk of the Stars Palm Springs, a city program managed by the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce. Candidates may not nominate themselves. Rather, a third-party nominator must complete a nomination form available at walkofthestars.com or Chamber headquarters.

If the nomination passes the Qualifying Subcommittee, the nomination advances to the WOTSPS Selection Committee for an up or down vote. Voting is done by secret ballot after each member has had time to review the nomination thoroughly. Votes are given to the Director of Programs to tabulate. If two-thirds of the Selection Committee votes “Yes,” the nomination is approved. If the nomination falls short, the nomination is denied, the Director of Programs informs the nominator of the decision, and said nominator may choose to resubmit with more information, or under a new category.

The completed form, along with biographical information, must be submitted to the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce Director of Programs with contact information, including the lead nominator’s email address and phone number. After vetting the nomination, the Director of Programs will contact the nominator to confirm receipt and explain next steps.

An approved nomination results in the Director of Programs working closely with the nominator to develop a timeline for planning a WOTSPS dedication, which must occur within two years of the committee’s approval.

The Director of Programs then submits the nomination to the WOTSPS’ Qualifying Subcommittee (a fivemember subset of the Selection Committee). This group reviews the nomination to determine whether or not the nominee meets the category’s criteria. At least three of the five members must approve the nomination.

If the nomination falls short of the required three votes, the nomination is returned to the Director of Programs, who in turn will inform the nominator of the decision. Said nominator has two years to resubmit the nomination with additional information, or under a new category.

Sixth Avenue and about West 54th Street in Manhattan isn’t as far as you might think! In fact, it may be “right around the corner,” no matter where you live or work in the desert. Sherman’s Deli & Bakery has two locations: on Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs and at Country Club Drive and Monterey Avenue in Palm Desert. The California State Senate and Assembly, the supervisors of Riverside County, and Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce named Sherman’s Deli & Bakery “Restaurant of the Year” and “Voted the No. 1 Sandwich in the Desert.”

You’ll find all the same unbeatable foods as those legendary New York delis with menu favorites like New York-style Hot Pastrami Sandwich with sliced turkey and Swiss cheese, Lox and Cream Cheese on a Bagel, and Matzo Ball Soup.

Patrons obviously consider Sherman’s a permanent part of the desert restaurant scene, but owners Sam and his sister Janet never take their customers for granted.

Their menu is an absolute delight with notes and amusing side dishes throughout. There are sumptuous deli platters (to go or to stay), which, the menu says, “Give our chef a chance to show off,” and “Everything is served with pride.” Under Beef ’n’ Latkas, you’ll note that a corned beef sandwich can be made with two of their famous potato pancakes instead of bread.

From 4 to 6 p.m. (7 p.m. in summer), early bird specials include Pasta Alfredo, Ribs & Chicken Combo, Roast Brisket of Beef, New York Steak, BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Herb-Roasted Chicken, Mom’s Meatloaf, Calves Liver and Oniowns, all with choice of soup, salad, or potato.
