A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER

Dear Palm Springs residents:

The fall season is upon us and we have a lot to celebrate in our city as we close out 2025, beginning with the grand opening of the fully restored historic Plaza Theatre this December! With headliners like legendary

About the Plaza Theatre

The Plaza Theatre, Palm Springs’ premier cultural landmark since 1936, is undergoing a complete restoration and will reopen in December 2025. Under the management of Oak View Group and in partnership with the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation and the city of Palm Springs, this historic venue will be transformed into a state-of-the-art performing arts destination while preserving its iconic character. The renovated theatre will generate a significant economic impact for downtown Palm Springs while offering world-class entertainment and cultural programming. For more information or booking inquiries, please contact Booking@PSPlazaTheatre.org.

comedian Lily Tomlin, singer/actress Jane Lynch, John Waters, the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus — and many other exciting acts coming to the theatre in the 2025-26 season — there will be plenty of arts and culture for everyone!

With that in mind, we are delighted to welcome Oak View Group, operators of Acrisure Arena, who will be overseeing the management of the theatre along with the Palm Springs Convention Center and Bureau of Tourism. We look forward to a fruitful partnership. To learn more about plans for the upcoming Plaza Theatre season keep turning the pages.

The arrival of fall also means parade season on Palm Canyon Drive. From celebrating Veterans Day to Greater Palm Springs Pride, the magnificent Festival of Lights and the Black History Parade & Town Fair, there is something for everyone! Not to mention that the city’s wildly popular street fair, VillageFest, will be hosting a plethora of fun and familyfriendly events to mark Halloween and the Palm Springs holidays! Keep reading for more information.

The fall season also brings exciting news from Palm Springs International Airport. Popular local restaurant Trio recently opened its doors atop the Sonny Bono Concourse — and we now have

new direct flights to Santa Rosa/Wine Country on Alaska Airlines; Newark, New Jersey on United; Charlotte, North Carolina on American; and Austin, Texas on Delta and Southwest Airlines. It’s never been easier to fly PSP!

Finally, I am pleased to report that a new Wind Wall will soon be completed along North Gene Autry Trail. This new project has been a long time coming.

From the upcoming opening of the newly restored Plaza Theatre and a plethora of new businesses, restaurants, and hotels flourishing in our city to the extraordinary work of our Palm Springs police and firefighters who stepped up this summer when the American Reproductive Health Clinic was bombed due to an act of terrorism, we have a lot to be thankful for.

As for me, I am incredibly thankful to be city manager of this uniquely special and inclusive city whose residents, businesses and city staff never cease to amaze me when it comes to collaborating and coming together in times of tragedy — and in times of joy and celebration. It is YOU who make Palm Springs like no place else, and I am proud to serve you.

Sincerely,

City

Palm Springs

NONA WATSON

CHAMBER CEO

Dear reader:

Welcome to the fall issue of PSILoveYou! It’s a very exciting season here in the desert — and a truly historic one. This December, our community will witness the grand unveiling of the beautifully refurbished Plaza Theatre, a crown jewel in the heart of our city ever since it first opened its doors in 1936. Over the decades, this beloved venue has hosted unforgettable performances, film premieres, and special events, earning its place as a cultural cornerstone of Palm Springs.

Thanks to the vision, generosity, and dedication of so many in our community — from David Clark Lee, Donna and Jon Croel, Brad Prescott’s the Prescott Foundation, and the Auen Foundation to countless devoted arts and culture fans from near and far — the Plaza Theatre has undergone a remarkable transformation. Every detail of the renovation honors its storied past while preparing it for a bright, vibrant future. From restored architectural features to state-of-the-art technical upgrades, this is a space ready to shine for generations to come.

Inside this issue, we celebrate not only the history of this grand landmark, but also the incredible talent that will grace its stage come December. Longtime PSILOVEYOU editor Daniel Vaillancourt (a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times, among many other national publications) had the privilege and pleasure of interviewing three of the world's most iconic comediennes — Lily Tomlin, Jane Lynch, and Fortune Feimster — each of whom will help kick off the Plaza Theatre’s next great chapter with style, humor, and unforgettable end-of-year performances.

The Plaza Theatre’s rebirth is a testament to what makes Palm Springs so special: a love for the arts, a respect for history, and a community that comes together to create something extraordinary.

See you there right after Thanksgiving, as the curtain finally rises! Nona Watson

Springs Chamber of Commerce

WENDY BEERBOWER

CHAMBER PRESIDENT

One of the things I love most about our community is the way we show up for one another. Coretta Scott King said it best: “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” Every day, I see proof of that greatness right here in Palm Springs.

Whether it’s our local businesses going the extra mile for their customers, our healthcare providers caring tirelessly for patients, or neighbors simply checking in on one another, these acts of kindness and support are what make this town so unique. At the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce, we believe in the power of working together. Supporting local businesses encourages entrepreneurship, creates jobs, and fuels growth. Supporting the arts and theatre brings creativity and joy into our lives.

And supporting one another — through friendship, kindness, and compassion — creates a place where everyone feels they belong.

As we excitedly welcome back many of our seasonal neighbors, let’s keep that spirit alive: shop local, thank our first responders, and take a moment to lend a hand or share a smile. Small actions truly add up to something powerful. On behalf of the Chamber, thank you for everything you do to lift up our community. Your commitment to one another — and to helping our businesses thrive — makes Palm Springs a wonderful place to live, work, and enjoy the Plaza Theatre! PS, I love you!

Matthew Mitchell

PRESIDENT’S CIRCLE

Thank you to the following Chamber members without whom many of our programs would not be possible.

Palm Springs United: A Community Rising Together After Tragedy

On the fateful day of May 17, 2025, the tranquility of Palm Springs faced an unimaginable tragedy. A devastating bombing rattled our community, impacting not only the peace and safety we hold so dear, but also the local businesses that are the heartbeat of our town. In response to this harrowing event, a tremendous show of solidarity emerged through the Palm Springs United fundraiser.

Organized in collaboration between the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, KESQ News Channel 3, and the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce, Palm Springs United aimed to uplift our affected businesses and bring hope back to our community. This heartfelt initiative was a testament to the resilience of our residents and the power of collective action.

Thanks to the generosity of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, individuals, and businesses, the very special event raised an astounding $120,000. Every single dollar was directed toward providing direct assistance to the local establishments that faced immense hardships in the aftermath of the bombing. This funding has been invaluable in helping them recover, rebuild, and recommit to their steadfast presence in our beloved desert.

As we look ahead, the efforts of Palm Springs United serve as a shining example of what we can achieve when we come together as a community. The resilience displayed by local businesses — supported by the unwavering dedication of residents — demonstrates that while we may face challenges, we will rise stronger together.

We encourage everyone to continue supporting local businesses not only during difficult times but as a way to strengthen the fabric of our community daily. Let’s keep the spirit of Palm Springs United alive as we work toward a brighter, united future.

Historic Plaza Theatre Nears Completion

ince 2019, the iconic Plaza Theatre in Palm Springs has undergone a stunningly remarkable transformation.

Once a proud beacon of culture in the village of Palm Springs, the Spanish Colonial Revival-style building fell into decay over the decades and needed a major restoration. The project will soon be completed, and when the historic theatre reopens in December 2025, it will once again be a sparkling and vibrant cultural center in downtown Palm Springs, offering world-class programming while remaining accessible to all. The comprehensive restoration project was accomplished through the remarkable partnership of the city of Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation. They meticulously restored and updated the elegant but aging theatre, and the result is

nothing short of breathtaking. When audiences are once again welcomed into the dazzlingly restored space, they will experience it just as it was in 1936, but with today’s safety considerations and impressive technological improvements.

The modernized theatre will provide many benefits for the community, and will help deliver on the city’s continuing vision for its downtown. It is estimated the theatre will accommodate approximately 135,000 patrons per year.

“Half of those patrons are estimated to be out-of-town guests who will book more than 50,000 hotel nights per year (based on double occupancy and average stay of 1.5 nights),” according to Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation President J.R. Roberts. “This means the theatre will potentially generate more

than $40 million in incremental spending, and provide more than $4 million direct economic impact to the city through sales and transient occupancy taxes.”

Early ticket sales show that approximately 50% of purchasers are from outside the Coachella Valley.

A Brief History

The Plaza Theatre played a significant role in the history of Palm Springs. It was an important part of the overall La Plaza development in 1936, and has served as the location for many significant Hollywood film premieres, including the world premiere of “Camille,” the 1945 West Coast premiere of “God Is My Co-Pilot,” the 1968 world premiere of the Peter Sellers classic “The Party,” and the 1990 world premiere of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” (at the First Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which originated at the theatre). In addition to being a movie theatre, it was also the venue for nationally broadcast radio theatre programs by such

$6 million needed to complete the restoration. When the theatre is restored, the Foundation will continue to fundraise for ongoing management of the venue.

“This stunning and artful restoration has been such an important project for the city and for me personally,” says Roberts. “I am honored that so many talented people have selflessly dedicated many hours to make this dream become a reality. We have only been able to accomplish this historic restoration because of the incredible support of our donors and the community, who have all made it possible to bring this important Palm Springs cultural hub back to life.”

luminaries as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Jack Benny.

In later years, it hosted the longrunning and beloved Fabulous Palm Springs Follies, which brought in crowds from around the world. The city of Palm Springs acquired the building in 1989 with the condition that it would maintain the building as a performing arts venue.

The City and the Foundation

The city of Palm Springs created a unique public/private partnership with the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation in 2019, where the nonprofit Foundation was created and tasked with raising the funds to restore the publicly owned structure. Farsighted philanthropists David Clark Lee, Donna and Jon Croel, Brad Prescott, and the One Valley Foundation provided significant financial contributions, and the Foundation’s board tirelessly worked with many other donors and the greater Palm Springs community. The capital campaign is now in its final phase as the Foundation raises the remaining

Oak View Group to Manage the Theatre

After an extensive search, the Foundation entered into a partnership agreement with Oak View Group (OVG) — the internationally acclaimed and respected venue management company that owns and operates Acrisure Arena — to have OVG run the day-to-day operations of the theatre. OVG will provide ongoing theatre management and will secure programming and new sponsorship opportunities. During the redesign, OVG worked closely with the Foundation to recommend aspects of the theatre’s capabilities, developed a food and beverage service program, and hired and trained staff.

OVG will manage all aspects of the theatre, including booking and promoting events, including concerts, chamber orchestra performances, film festivals, community

meetings, conventions, cabaret performances, booked acts, lectures, music festivals, ideas festivals, children’s programming, charity and fundraising events, and other performances and events. OVG was also recently selected by the city of Palm Springs to manage another important economic driver, the Palm Springs Convention Center.

“This inaugural season showcases exactly what the Plaza Theatre was built to do,” says Oak View Group Senior Vice President and Plaza Theatre General Manager John Bolton. “From comedy to classical music, every act proves this venue can deliver world-class entertainment. The Plaza Theatre is back where it belongs — at the center of Palm Springs’ cultural life.”

Artful Restoration and Modern Updates

The Plaza Theatre’s renovation honors its storied past with a firm commitment to fully preserve the charm and character of the original design while ushering in a new era of accessibility and technological innovations.

As a part of the overall restoration, skilled craftsmen have painstakingly restored original historic elements, such as the intricate decorative stencil work

adorning the proscenium, and other highly visible locations throughout the building, restored the interior and exterior of the theatre to its original colors, reinstalled the famed “star field” ceiling using LED technology, a nd refurbished or recreated the original chandeliers and other fixtures.

But the efforts did not stop there. The beloved landmark has also been reimagined for future generations by updating the interior seats and layout to meet current ADA codes, and installing state-of-the-art technology. New featured technology includes an impressive sound system (meeting or exceeding the industry standard for premium venues), a 4K laser projector, a 28-foot projection screen, and advanced hearing assistance technology.

Exciting Acts Coming to the Theatre

Oak View Group has already booked an impressive, starstudded opening season lineup of significant performers. Some of the exciting headliner acts include Judy Collins, Micky Dolenz, Kathy Griffin, Vicki Lawrence, Jane Lynch, Don McLean, Matthew Morrison, Modern Men, New York Philharmonic String Quartet, Paula Poundstone, Billy Porter,

Priscilla Presley, Palm Spring Gay Men’s Chorus, Palm Springs Symphony, Lily Tomlin, and John Waters. To plant the seeds for a lifelong appreciation of the arts and ignite creativity in the area’s youngest members, OVG will offer several Arts Teach Kids school-day performances. Tickets for every performance are available via ticketmaster.com at the Plaza Theatre’s website, palmspringsplazatheatre.com.

Patrons still have the unique opportunity to become a part of the Plaza Theatre by participating in the theatre’s capital campaign and other opportunities, including seat-naming and ongoing annual memberships. To join in this historic opportunity, visit savetheplazatheatreps.com.

The Curtain Finally Rises

PSILOVEYOU spends time with Lily Tomlin, Jane Lynch, and Fortune Feimster.

o kick off its inaugural season starting this December, the rejuvenated Plaza Theatre has enlisted a roster of world-class entertainers — every one of them a legend in their own right.

In celebration of this milestone, I had the honor and the privilege of interviewing three of the season’s marquee names. In my work as a veteran awards show scriptwriter, I also happen to have been fortunate enough to work with all of them.

Back in 2017, Fortune Feimster and I collaborated on PFLAG’s 9th Annual Straight For Equality Gala in New York City, when the brilliant host brought down the house with her sidesplitting humor.

In September 2020, smack dab in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Los Angeles LGBT Center chose to put on “Love in Action,” a live telethon broadcast on KTLA that featured a universe of stars that included Cher, Billy Porter, kd lang, RuPaul, Cynthia Erivo, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sia, Margaret Cho, Cyndi Lauper, Melissa Etheridge, and yes, the one and only Lily Tomlin — a BAFTA and Oscar nominee who also happens to be a Tony, Grammy, and two-time Emmy winner. The entire show was hosted by five-time Emmy winner Jane Lynch, who helped me, my co-writer (and spouse) David A. Lee, cohost Cher Calvin, and the entire crew keep calm, cool, and collected. She was grace under pressure incarnate.

Finally, in April of 2021, when L.A.’s Homeboy Industries

— the world’s largest nonprofit devoted to gang member rehabilitation — produced an online version of its annual benefit, I pre-taped the entire show at Homeboy’s Downtown L.A. headquarters with hosts Tomlin and Jane Fonda, who at the time were at the height of their “Grace and Frankie” fame.

I’d worked with both of them twice previously. With Tomlin, not only on “Love in Action” in L.A., but in Palm Springs at Evening Under the Stars benefitting AIDS Assistance Program. With Fonda — a Grammy and double Tony nominee who has an Emmy, two BAFTAs, and two Oscars — in L.A. at Outfest’s Legacy Awards, and here at the Palm Springs International Film Awards Gala (where I’ve been head writer since 2011). But nothing compares to spending hours with two of the trio of stars of the classic film “9 to 5” writing, rewriting, and rehearsing speeches and jokes. Riffing off each other with ease thanks to their decades-long friendship, the pair were as delightful as they were hilarious.

“The Plaza has always been about creating moments people remember, and Jane, Lily, and Fortune are perfect to kick off our new era,” says Oak View Group Senior Vice President and Plaza Theatre General Manager John Bolton. “They’re beloved, they’re brilliant, and they know how to light up a room — exactly the energy we wanted to set the tone for what’s ahead.”

Read on as these three wickedly funny ladies share with me their connection to the desert, their excitement about kicking off this first season at the new Plaza Theatre, and what audiences can expect at their respective shows. Enjoy!

“An Evening With Lily Tomlin”

December

2 and 3

What’s your connection to Palm Springs, Lily?

First and foremost, I LOVE Palm Springs and have been coming here for three decades! It’s like a second home. My dear mother Lillie Mae, and my brother Richard and his partner Michael, lived in Palm Springs for many years. In fact, Richard and Michael were married here. I have also performed at the McCallum Theatre numerous times for several charitable organizations. My partner, writer Jane Wagner, and I were honored with receiving a star on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars in March of 2012. We have had so many friends living here over the years. I love the architecture, the mountains, all the great restaurants, the remarkable history, and of course, the weather.

What does it mean to you to be the first to perform at the newly renovated Plaza Theatre?

What an honor! … With its long and glorious history, its intimacy and now, with this glorious renovation, the Plaza is the crown jewel of Palm Springs. I am honored to be a part of its new debut!

What can audiences expect of your show?

Audiences can expect to see several of my classic characters, whom I “bring” to every show with their stories and life experiences. Audiences will have some great laughs with me and my characters, as well as an audience Q&A and maybe a gentle roasting of some current and past Palm Springs friends.

“Taking Care of Biscuits” with Fortune Feimster

December 6

What’s your connection to Palm Springs, Fortune?

Living in Los Angeles, Palm Springs has always been a great getaway. It’s so peaceful and relaxing. I started coming maybe 17 years ago for the Dinah Shore weekends, and then really reconnected with it during COVID times. We spent a lot of time in the desert and just really fell in love with the town and the people and the restaurants. It’s one of my favorite places to visit.

What does it mean to you to be among the first to perform at the newly renovated Plaza Theatre?

It’s a huge honor and we’ve already sold out both shows, so that’s really special. I heard it’s beautiful, so I’m excited to see it. There are so many great performers locally and within driving range, so I imagine it will be a very popular spot.

What can audiences expect of your show?  It’s a brand new hour since my last special, "Crushing It," came out. As always, it’s very personal and delves into what’s happening in my life. It’s just fun, happy, real material, but also touches on some of the tougher things I’m going through. I always try to talk about things people can relate to. But for sure, everyone will have a great time.

Jane Lynch’s “A Swingin’ Little Christmas”

December 15

What’s your connection to Palm Springs, Jane?

Palm Springs has always been a wonderful trip I would take from Los Angeles every couple of years. I have several friends who have relocated from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, and I’ve always loved hanging out with them and in your beautiful town. I find it so aesthetically pleasing as well. I love the desert landscape and all the midcentury modern architecture. And of course, I love the kitsch.

What does it mean to you to be among the first to perform at the newly renovated Plaza Theatre?

We were thrilled to be invited! We’ve been doing our show for about 10 years and love that we get to play so close to home, where many of us — the guys in the band included — have connections. We cannot wait to perform in this theatre! I’ve spoken to so many people in advance of this gig and they are also excited for us to see it and perform there. Kudos to all who were instrumental in getting this renovation done. Sounds like it’s going to be Palm Springs’ very own gem in the desert!

What can the audience expect of your show?

Your audience can expect a solid hour and a half of toe-tapping fun that will surely put you in the mood for Christmas! We have a five-piece band, the Tony Guerrero Quintet, with Kate, Tim, and me at the microphones. We love that late ’50s, early ’60s vibe and the tight harmonies, which I think will go so well with the vibe of Palm Springs. It’ll be a lot of Christmas songs you know and love, but set to a more jazzy feel, and in some cases, it almost sounds like a big band. We pride ourselves as a real throwback musically, and if I do say so myself, a real riot comedically.

PSP Update

Palm Springs International Airport continues to grow, evolve, and deliver more of what travelers love. This season brings a wave of exciting updates — from new flights that expand our map coast to coast, and fresh touches of midcentury modern design at the terminal curb, to even more ways to plan and enjoy the airport experience. Together, these changes highlight PSP’s commitment to offering more options, more comfort, and more of the unique sense of place that sets our airport apart.

New Flights

• Santa Rosa – Alaska Airlines

Starting October 26, PSP travelers can once again trade desert palms for vineyard views as Alaska Airlines brings back nonstop service to Santa Rosa. With five weekly flights aboard Alaska’s E175 jets (that’s right — no middle seats), the route makes it easy to slip away to Sonoma County for wine, food, and fresh air, all just a quick flight away.

• Austin – Delta Air Lines & Southwest Airlines

Travelers heading to Texas’ capital will have more airline options than ever this season. Delta launches nonstop Saturday service from Palm Springs to Austin on November 15, while Southwest follows on March 7 with weekend flights on both Saturdays and Sundays. Together, the two carriers give Coachella Valley travelers more flexibility, more competitive fares, and more ways to experience Austin’s vibrant mix of music, culture, and business — all from the convenience of PSP.

• Newark – United Airlines

United Airlines is making it easier than ever to get from Palm Springs to New York City. Beginning December 18, nonstop service to Newark returns for the first time in several years, with flights operating five to seven days a week. The new route adds PSP’s third nonstop option to the New York metro area, complementing existing service on Alaska and Delta and making PSP an even stronger gateway to the East Coast.

• Charlotte – American Airlines

Travelers heading east will have a new connection starting December 20, when American Airlines begins weekly Saturday service to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Running through April, this new nonstop offers seamless access to American’s major East Coast hub, opening one-stop connections to dozens of cities across the U.S. and abroad. It’s a big win for PSP as we continue expanding coast-to-coast access for our travelers.

Midcentury Modern Comfort, Right at the Curb

PSP’s famous first impression just got an upgrade. New benches now line the front of the terminal — but they’re not just any benches. Designed in true midcentury modern style, and replicated from PSP’s original 1960s terminal seating, the furniture is functional while giving a stylish nod to the airport’s iconic past. The refreshed look gives airport guests a comfortable spot to pause, while carrying forward the design legacy that makes Palm Springs unlike anywhere else. Visitors can even experience the new look themselves

curbside, then explore beyond with PSP’s Stay & Play Visitor Pass, which allows non-travelers to explore the terminal, enjoy dining and shopping, and take in our distinctive architecture. Get your free pass at FlyPSP.com/StayandPlay.

Book Smarter, Fly Easier

Finding your next flight from PSP has never been simpler. Our booking tool at FlyPSP.com/DEALS lets travelers search routes, compare airlines, and book directly, all in one place. It’s convenience designed with PSP’s signature ease in mind, helping travelers connect the desert to the world.

Wind Wall along N. Gene Autry Trail Set

for Completion in January 2026

The area along North Gene Autry Trail has long been plagued by frequent road closures due to unsafe driving conditions caused by blowing sand and severely reduced visibility — a major frustration for both residents and visitors that turns a simple drive into an unpredictable detour. Relief is finally on the way!

Construction is now underway on a nearly 600-foot-long brick wall designed to shield drivers from the area’s infamous wind and sandstorms. The new wall is expected to dramatically improve visibility, road conditions, and safety for everyone travelling in this key corridor.

The Palm Springs City Council officially approved the project during its April 23, 2025 meeting, awarding the construction contract to Deark E&C Inc. for just over $2.1 million. The majority of the funding comes from Measure A, a halfcent sales tax measure approved by Riverside County voters that invests in major regional transportation improvements.

The Palm Springs community recently gathered to say goodbye to the Palm Springs Public Library’s longtime home at Sunrise Park with a festive closing party, marking the start of an exciting transformation.

Thanks to $30 million in funding from the California State Library, Measure J, and municipal bonds, the Palm Springs City Council has approved a full renovation of the 50-year-old building, with construction beginning in late August and expected to take 18 to 36 months.

During the renovation, the Palm Springs Public Library will operate from a temporary 6,000-square-foot location at Rimrock Plaza (4721 East Palm Canyon Drive) near Gene Autry Trail. This thoughtfully designed space will offer many core services, including public computers, a capsule collection of books, DVDs, newspapers, children’s story times, the Spanish Book Club, and passport acceptance services by appointment.

Programming will continue throughout the city:

• Adult programs at the Welwood Murray Memorial Library, the Mizell Center, the LGBTQ

Community Center of the Desert, and other community venues.

• Teen programs near the high school, for convenient access.

• Children’s programs at Rimrock Plaza and pop-up locations.

The library will maintain its regular hours and offer plenty of parking at the new location, which is also accessible via the SunLine 1WV bus route.

Looking ahead, the fully renovated library will include expanded children’s and adult areas, a 180-seat community room, improved accessibility, and updated infrastructure.

Until the grand reopening — anticipated in summer 2027 — the Rimrock Plaza location will continue to serve as a vital hub for learning and connection.
