Welcome to the inaugural edition of PSILOVEYOU, a new quarterly magazine produced and published by the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the residents of Palm Springs. It is our pride and joy to debut this entertaining and informative publication at the top of a new year, and it is our sincere wish to provide you, our cherished reader, with the latest city information while also giving you a snapshot of our resilient business community.
As we begin this new year—during which an ongoing global pandemic will continue to weigh heavily on our hearts and minds—we at the Chamber feel our singular focus remains a successful, responsible economic recovery that will keep every resident and visitor within our city limits safe and healthy. Our local business community has understandably been devastated, but united, we stand determined. Our role as a chamber is to be the prime champion for local business, to be the chief voice of local business, and to always look to and work toward the bright future of local business.
In addition to overflowing with enlightening, useful information, each edition of PSILOVEYOU will celebrate some of our local heroes—those women and men who have gone over and above in the line of duty to keep all of us safe and thriving. We will also highlight members of our business community, paying particular homage to the pioneering ways in which they’ve pivoted in this new normal so as to ensure their continued prosperity.

As a business owner and resident of Palm Springs, it’s a pleasure to serve a chamber so focused on supporting its members, their businesses, and the customers who frequent them. I’m pleased to share that our board of directors and executive staff continue to focus daily on three key priorities: To create and offer programs and opportunities that will educate our members, to communicate key messages to our members and community stakeholders, and to serve our members at the highest level possible. I’m so proud of how these volunteers and staff members have shown up every day to put these priorities into action.

Abrief note to you as I prepare to leave City Hall after serving as city manager these past 20 years. My heart overflows with gratitude for the city of Palm Springs!
With that in mind, the city’s mission has always been to ensure Palm Springs remains an inclusive, world-class city dedicated to providing excellent and responsive public services that enhance the quality of life for our current and future generations of residents. Our city’s economic growth is an important component that makes that possible.
Putting it in perspective, when I first arrived at City Hall in 2000, the city’s total budget was $88 million — now 20 years later, it has grown to $258 million. I believe this illustrates tremendous economic and civic growth that has flourished thanks to important public/private partnerships, making our destination the success it is today — and led to an enduring Palm Springs renaissance. This growth has helped us strengthen all our safety services, including additional 911 paramedic responders, park improvements, significant new street resurfacing, housing and retail opportunities, more recreation programs, library services, sustainability programs, increased bike lanes, and new social services resources.
With that said, a big part of the Palm Springs renaissance is due to the hard work and dedication of our businesses, tourism and hospitality partners, who have always understood Palm Springs has a special magic that truly makes us like no place else. Your commitment to our economic prosperity cannot be understated. It has been an honor and privilege to work with you and serve our residents and visitors, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

COVID- 19
The Palm Springs Public Library’s pickup service, Library-A-GoGo, remains a favorite among library users during COVID-19. It is easier than ever to get books, DVDs, and music CDs through this service. Visit pslibrary.org, search the catalog for items, and place your online request. Your items will be gathered, and when they are ready to be picked up, you will receive a notification. Simply make an appointment, call when you arrive, and your items will be placed on the table outside the door. It is as easy as 1-2-3!

In order to participate, residents must complete an online form at pslibrary.org and answer a series of questions about what they like to read, watch, or listen to. Then, the city’s friendly librarians will work with you to discover new materials. You can even get a virtual library card if you have not used the service before—or if you were in elementary school the last time you visited the library.

2021 PSP
Palm Springs International Airport soared to new air service heights in 2020. Seven airlines collectively made 13 new service announcements, including seven new routes and two new airlines.
On October 1, PSP welcomed Boutique Air as a new airline flying to Los Angeles and Phoenix, once daily each. Boutique then added a second daily LAX flight two weeks later. Joining Boutique and United Airlines, Delta Air Lines launched its own daily LAX flight on November 9 to give PSP four daily round trips to Los Angeles.
The rest of November shaped up to be a very exciting month, as the city welcomed Southwest Airlines to Palm Springs. Southwest began year-round service from PSP on November 15, with three daily flights to Phoenix, two daily flights to Oakland, and one daily flight to Denver. This was followed a few days later by new nonstop service to Boise, Idaho and Eugene, Oregon on Allegiant Air. Those
routes commenced November 19 and 20, respectively, with each operating twice weekly through April 18, 2021.
December was equally thrilling, with new service from three airlines and more new routes. On December 17, Alaska Airlines launched new daily year-round service to San Jose, daily seasonal service to Boise, and seasonal service to Reno/Tahoe five days per week. Both seasonal routes end on April 12, 2021. Also on December 17, American Airlines kicked off nonstop service to Philadelphia, operating Saturdays through April 3, 2021. In addition, JetBlue debuted new seasonal service to Fort Lauderdale on December 20, which will go through April 18, 2021.

Ulises Aguirre has been appointed PSP’s new executive director.
Prior to being named interim executive director, Aguirre served for the past five years as the airport’s assistant director. Before arriving in Palm Springs, he performed a variety of management roles at Los Angeles International Airport, serving in positions such as manager of strategic planning projects and terminal operations as well as director of landside operations.
Aguirre also served in several management capacities at Ontario International Airport, including manager of airport administration.
“Ulises has a wealth of experience managing complex airports and overseeing strategic project development at major hubs like LAX, Ontario International—and
for the past five years, in Palm Springs,” said City Manager David H. Ready. “We’re excited to welcome him to the executive management team.”
Aguirre, a certified member of the American Association of Airport Executives, holds a certificate in aviation safety and security from the University of Southern California.
“With the recent arrival of Southwest Airlines and other popular carriers, Palm Springs International Airport is experiencing unparalleled growth as one of the premier resort airports in Southern California and beyond,” says Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau President and CEO Scott White, adding that Aguirre has played a pivotal role in the success of PSP and its airline development.

The Palm Springs Police Department would like to thank the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce for allowing us the opportunity to highlight extraordinary work of the employees of your Police Department.
We are very grateful for the incredible support our community offers us day after day. Palm Springs Police Department employees strive to provide outstanding service to our residents and visitors.
Unfortunately, this year, we were unable to publicly gather to present awards to several officers and staff. However, we will not let the year end without recognizing their momentous achievements.

LIFESAVING MEDAL (Incident April 7, 2020)
Officer Cary Carrillo, Officer Anthony Pilutik, and Officer Max Reynoso Officers were commended for their quick response and ability to remain calm in a life-threatening situation. Officers immediately assisted a chest stabbing victim by immediately formulating a plan to apply combat gauze and direct pressure to save the victim’s life.
Officer Reynoso was commended for demonstrating technical knowledge in assessing a stab wound victim suffering a hemorrhage to his femoral artery, and the application of a tourniquet to control this life-threatening injury. Trauma surgery staff at DRMC stated Officer Reynoso’s actions facilitated the victim’s survival from the traumatic injury.
MEDAL OF COURAGE (Incident August 2, 2020)
Officer Nañez was commended for his proactive policing, hard work, dedication, and diligence in seeking out and deterring crime. He witnessed several subjects shooting into a mobile home park, and pursued the suspects after they fled. He showed tremendous courage in engaging and capturing one of the suspects and the suspect’s weapon.
CHIEF’S COMMENDATION
Detective Torres is commended for his collaborative work on narcotics investigations, which has resulted in numerous arrests and seizures of significant amounts of narcotics and weapons. He dedicated his time in participating in an annual law enforcement boxing tournament to raise funds to support a non-profit foundation that helps children fighting terminal cancer.

(Incident August 8, 2020)
Officer Andrew Tiedeman and Officer Shawn Carlin Officers responded to assist a woman deeply cutting her arm from her elbow to her wrist with a razor blade. She refused and physically resisted the officers’ attempts to assist her. They were able to detain her and apply a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, and are commended for their actions in saving her life.

These employees volunteered to be facilitators of the Coachella Valley’s first-ever Spanish language Community Police Academy. Their dedication, outside of their normal workday, created the course content, which mirrored the department’s existing Community Police Academy. They are commended for their outstanding performance, resourcefulness, exceptional work ethic, and service to the community.

Earlier this year, several incidents of shootings and gang violence plagued several city neighborhoods, causing the need for swift action to address the violence. Officer Colantuono was commended for his outstanding service to the community by his proactive enforcement efforts, analyzing information about high-crime areas, locating stolen vehicles, and identifying suspects. His relentlessness assisted in making the city safer by his seizure of several firearms and his recovery of stolen vehicles from criminal gang members.
The Police Department’s Field Training Officer Program was approved by the State’s Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) in July 2019. Sergeant Raso worked hundreds of hours to create the program, which ultimately led to the state’s approval. His overall dedication enhanced the performance and efficiency in training new officers.

If there are two phrases best known here by locals and visitors, one is “I Palm Springs” and the other is “There’s always a party at Lulu.” Well, the party continues with safe, sanitary to-go and delivery service—and outdoor dining when it returns—365 days a year, just as it has for nearly 10 years since Lulu California Bistro opened its doors.

Julie Montante opened PSA Organica in downtown Palm Springs in 2016. Julie’s brother, Len Montante, is an important part

Julie got into this industry when her mother developed stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 45. She wanted to find alternatives to chemo, radiation, and surgery without stripping her of her dignity. This was the beginning of an extensive and compassionate journey for Julie and Lenny to pursue their dream of helping others in need. They put their clients’ needs and comfort first from the time they walk in. Their goal is to supply compassion to those in need in a safe and comfortable environment. There are people who feel comfortable dining out, some who don’t, and those in-between. Early on, we weren’t confident we had the right solution. So, we waited. The result is a chic outdoor patio that doesn’t feel temporary, where people can dine comfortably and most important, safely. We actually submitted for less capacity than the city would grant. We felt people would appreciate having the extra space. We believe we’ve reached our goal of bringing folks back who wanted to visit but were a little apprehensive about it. This pandemic may be temporary, but what we do during it will have a long-lasting effect.

We’re proud to serve four generations of Delgado family recipes.
