Sylvia McEwan Viewing a gallery of figurative works from Sydney-based artist Sylvia McEwan feels both pleasantly familiar and refreshingly novel. A sophisticated aesthetic manifests the artist’s knowledge of, and connection to, the revolutionaries of modern art. The way her work seamlessly blends figurative and abstract elements, deconstructing forms into curves, facets, and shapes, elegantly picks up that legacy and carries it forward. A drive for balance inspires McEwan and characterizes her carefully composed pieces. Notice the layering and juxtaposition of elements—a decisive, dark stroke over a light wash; measured, controlled hatching next to vigorous swirls. A selective use of color, restrained but effective, adds gravity or energy. Every composition shows a considered balance in the variety of content and the placement of elements across the canvas or paper. The effect: The eye bounces around, traveling every inch of the composition—lest we miss a splash of color, a moment of vibrancy. The work reveals an informed and systematic approach. At the same time, McEwan’s intuitive process invites chance, emotion, and originality. “I can’t say that I start the painting with a definite intent on either subject or form,” says the artist. “That evolves as the painting progresses. I begin with an idea, whether it is a mark on the canvas or a color. The more I move into the painting, the more it becomes something else entirely.” Assertive figures returning our gaze demonstrate how effectively McEwan has moved into her paintings. These bodies show confident line work, where McEwan distills the essence of form into two or three curves that aren’t uniform or predictable, but unique and personal. Her mark making balances the smooth and sinuous with the energetic and erratic. McEwan insists the figures must stand on their own, both solid and light. Every element in harmony. Bold, but measured. Aggressive, yet sensitive. Precise. Balanced.
