Second location adds more convenience The Medicine Shoppe opens new storefront at Crossroads Village Convenience is a key component in The Medicine Shoppe’s expansion to a new location in Crossroads Village Shopping Centre, next to Quality Foods on Joyce Avenue. While the original location at Gibsons Crossing on Marine Avenue will continue to offer customers the same integrated pharmacy services it has for the past six years, the new store will feature more of a “mainstream pharmacy approach,” says owner and compound pharmacist Dirk de Villiers. “Some aspects of nutritional, integrated medicine and homeopathy will be incorporated, but not to the extent of what we have on Marine, where we have a naturopath practicing in the store and nutritional counselling is offered.” A soft opening began at the new location in late September, but staff will celebrate an official grand opening from Monday, October 24, through Sunday, October 30. “Everyone is invited to the grand opening event,” says de Villiers. “There will be special deals running the whole week and customers can enter a draw to win an iPad.” As part of the celebrations, beginning on Monday, the new store’s first 50 customers will receive free gift bags. On Wednesday, October 26, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony with cake and refreshments will take place at 11 am. Executives from The Medicine Shoppe Canada, as well as management from Quality Foods, will be on hand to promote the working
relationship agreement between the pharmacy group and grocery store chain. Local dignitaries have also been invited. Chung Choo, a pharmacist with 13 years of experience, will manage the new store, which is open seven days a week from 9 am-6 pm. Additional staff members include pharmacist Lynda Brousseau and regulated technician Charlee Akins. Although de Villiers will spend some time each week at the new location, most of his focus will be on services offered at 4670 Marine Avenue, which is open from 9:30
am-5 pm, Monday to Friday. “At this location, I am continuing my integrated care, which is naturopathy, homeopathy and natural healthcare pharmacy services,” says de Villiers. “Nowadays, the word is functional pharmacy, where you integrate the use of drugs with a healthy lifestyle, including what herbs you can put into a diet that might result in fewer drugs being used or maybe eliminate some drugs.” The Marine location also offers complete home healthcare, including wheelchairs, bathroom and home safety equipment and

ostomy supplies. An Ideal Protein weight-loss clinic is another featured service available. “Ideal Protein is a personalized weight-loss program,” explains de Villiers, who coaches the program with Ideal Protein coach Jessica Welde. “Clients receive one-on-one coaching on a weekly basis.” More information about the program is available at idealweightlosspowellriver.com. In addition to regular pharmacy services, a lab for personalized compounds is located on site. “We can take tablets and put them into a liquid, a cream or an

Royal LePage is bringing back the tailgate party at tonight’s Powell River Kings game. Starting at 5:30 pm with a barbecue and live music by local rockers Paradise, the tailgate party precedes the Kings’ home game versus Salmon Arm Silverbacks. “We want everyone to come and listen to the music and visit with each other before the game,” says Royal LePage managing broker Dawn Adaszynski. “It’s a community party.” Held at the front entrance to Hap Parker Arena at Powell River Recreation Complex, proceeds from the fundraising event go toward two local charities, Powell River United Way and Grace House. “We do this as a family event. We really believe in giving back to the community,” says Adaszynski. “It supports the Kings by getting people out to the game, but more importantly it supports United Way and Grace House.” Aside from burgers and snacks, another calling card at the popular event is the chance to win a variety of impressive prizes geared toward family and fitness. “Bring extra cash because we have amazing prizes,” says Adaszynski. Prizes include return airfare for two to Vancouver, courtesy of Pacific

Frightful waste
Goblins, ghouls, witches and creatures of all sorts will be out at the end of the month. With a little do-it-yourself work and imagination, you can green up this holiday without sacrificing an ounce of festive fun. Increase the green scare factor by creating a zero-waste costume. Here are some ideas: • Repurpose something you already own. • Scour thrift stores for costume creation inspirations. • Use material that can be removed from the costume and reused again. • Consider renting a costume. • Trade or swap old costumes with friends or family. • Check out instructables.com, an excellent how-to website with scads of costume ideas. Assembling your costume with things you already own or thrift store items saves
money and ups the creativity factor, which is a must if you plan to enter a costume contest or just want to wow partygoers when mingling. For safety reasons, most households hand out individually wrapped treats. Unfortunately, most candy wrappers are not easily recyclable, such as foil or crinkly plastic packaging. Consider passing out ghoulish treats that come in paper packaging that is accepted in our local recycling system. Common treats with this packaging include Smarties and raisins. Adding a healthy treat option such as raisins may not be such a bad idea when the pillow case is dumped and sugary chocolate treats cover the floor. You may also want to buy in bulk to avoid excess packaging. For tricker or treaters you know well, craft a reusable or paper bag filled with unpackaged treats, a unique addition to the treat stash. If you feel the selection for treats in recyclable packaging is lacking, give those candy companies a haunting email or phone call to let them know you are not purchasing their product because of the packaging. Without nudges from consumers, companies are unlikely to change. Hopefully, we can work toward living in a community where we trust our neighbours enough to let our children accept homegrown apples and handmade, unpackaged treats. Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program.
Robert is an excellent complement to our already capable and accomplished staff. He brings a sense of vigor and ambition that derives from the excitement of beginning a career in the law. We are excited to see him channel this into service for our existing clients and the new clients he will have. Robert feels like he fit in from day one. “I am a small-town boy through and through and could not be happier to have found myself settling down and starting practice in this wonderful place.” Robert hopes to serve the Powell River community by focusing on family law, civil law and aiding small businesses.

Q: What is joint tenancy and what is tenants in common? A: There are two methods with which you may hold property in British Columbia, joint tenancy and tenants in common. Joint tenancy provides rights of survivorship wherein the property is transferred automatically to the surviving joint tenant upon the demise of one of the joint tenants. Tenants in common does not provide a right of survivorship to the remaining tenants in common. The deceased’s portion of the property would fall into and form part of his or hers estate. If you have any questions on how you would like to have your property registered, please call for an appointment.

Food insecurity affects residents
Y
HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet Do you know what you are having for your next meal? How about the one after that? Is there any doubt in your mind that there will be food or enough money for food for you or your children? Will you have a choice? Answering no to any of these questions suggests that you may be facing food insecurity and that has implications beyond the next meal. Food security is one of the keys to health and wellbeing. It relies on access to sufficient nutritious and
safe food. Household food insecurity arises when a household worries about, or lacks, the financia l means to buy food. Some people will ask how much of a problem this is in our wealthy province. The answer will surprise many: about one in nine households in BC could be considered food insecure. A report published by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), in collaboration with researchers from University of Toronto, provided an analysis of household food insecurity in BC. Using data from 2011 to 2012, the August 2016 report found that 11.8 per cent of BC households, about half a million people, fit the description for food insecurity. Defining food insecurity is done over a range of values, from secure, never having a problem accessing food, to severely insecure, where a household has had to make extensive compromises, including disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake.
Food insecurity rates in BC differ depending on certain household characteristics. Among the roughly half a million people facing some food insecurity, about 91,000 face severe food insecurity. The BCCDC study found that one in six children under the age of 18 live in households experiencing some level of food insecurity. Female lone-parent households with children under 18 face the highest rate of insecurity at 34.2 per cent, more than a third. The study also found that among food insecure households, two-thirds reported their main sources of income were wages, salaries or self-employment. For families reliant on social assistance as their main source of income, the number jumped to more than three quarters. Food i nsec u r it y is a publ ic hea lt h concern because it affects a household’s ability to afford nutritious food, which in turn inf luences the physical and mental
health of those people. The BCCDC study looked at five indicators: perceived health, perceived mental health, healthy eating, adult obesity and mood or anxiety disorders. They found that people living in food insecure households had poorer health than their food-secure neighbours across all five indicators. Across the province a
number of organizations, both government and social, are working on the issues surrounding food insecurity. For ex a mple, Powel l R iver Food Sec u r it y Project, prfoodsecurity. org, funded by Vancouver Coastal Health, is working to increase local capacity and resilience in the food system. It works with local government, schools,
health and other services as well as various groups and community members. To learn more about food security in BC, go to bcfoodsecuritygateway.ca. Paul Martiquet is the medical health officer for rural Vancouver Coastal Health, including Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Seato-Sky, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.

Patricia Frances Cochlan
July 5, 1930 – October 4, 2016 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Frankie. She died suddenly and unexpectedly while walking close to her Kitsilano home in Vancouver. She will be greatly missed by her four children–Karen, Terri (Phillip), Bill (Bev) and Bob (Liz), her grandchildren Delaney and Lindsay, her brother Harold (Alice) and her sister Doreen, the extended Cochlan and Carson families, and her many friends. Frankie was born in Fort William, Ontario, to Ethel and Herbert Carson. As a young teenager, she, her sisters June and Doreen, and brother Harold moved to Powell River, where they attended Brooks High school. While at Brooks, Frankie was a member of the Upper Island championship women’s basketball team and worked summers at the Royal Savary Hotel. At 23, Frankie married Jack Smith Cochlan and started a family in the butterfly-shaped house on Marine Avenue in Westview. After her husband’s early death at 38 years of age, Frankie continued to raise her four children while working for MacMillan Bloedel. Following her retirement, Frankie moved to Vancouver where she resumed her position as the loving anchor of the Cochlan family. Frankie greatly enjoyed walking, gardening, reading, volunteering for those less fortunate, and watching her granddaughters grow up to be lovely young women. Frankie was a devoted and strong mother. She was a role model for not only her own children, but also for those who had the pleasure of knowing this thoughtful, happy and gracious woman. Frankie will be remembered for her inner strength, determination and positive energy. Her sarcastic wit likely was noted by some, but her kindness was felt by all. Her love for and dedication toward her children was enduring and extended to their spouses and friends. We will miss her deeply, but Mom understood Helen Keller’s belief, “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” A remembrance of Frankie’s life will take place in spring 2017–her favourite season.
Peter Henry Black March 17,1939 October 7,2016
“GONE FISHIN”
Pete was born and raised in Powell River. He joined the United States Navy after high school and following, many adventures abroad, he returned home to live life to its fullest: golfing, fishing and boating with close friends. He later became a Life Master at bridge. He worked as a union carpenter in the mill for most of his work life. Pete spent many years honing his skills, trolling the lakes and ocean up and down the coast. The thing that brought Pete the most joy was passing on those skills to the next generation so they could experience what he had known and loved his whole life. Whether it was freshly caught salmon, prawns and crab or vegetables he had grown in his own garden, Pete couldn’t give enough away to the people in his life. As described by his brother Ian, he was generous to a fault. We, your family and friends, love you, Pete. Thank you so much for all the great memories and everything you have given us. You will be greatly missed and warmly remembered always. A big thank-you to Dr. Burns and to the nurses in the oncology unit and on the fourth floor at Powell River General Hospital. Donations in Pete’s name to Powell River Hospital Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
1100 In Memoriam IN MEMORY OF MY BROTHER
Ronald Herman Johnson 1955-2016
With sadness in our hearts, we write of the passing of Ronald, of Powell River, at the age of 60. Ron was predeceased by his loving parents Ruth and Herman Johnson. He is survived by his siblings Donna (Neil), Lynne (Glen) and Mike (Chris), as well as many nieces and nephews he loved deeply. Ron grew up in and around the Powell River area before spending 30 years working at the pulp and paper mill. He had a fond love of music and movies. We will miss him dearly. A celebration of life for Ron will follow at a later date. Gone but not forgotten.
April Dorothy Wynn Wells 1943 - 2016
Mom was amazing! She knew her mind and never hesitated to speak it. She was deeply loved by her three daughters, Dee (Anderson), Tara and Cosima, and her grandsons Jack (Anderson) and Tao (Buterman). She was like a second mom to many of her daughters’ friends, and she will be truly missed by the folks she sang and jammed with in Kimberley, Victoria, Lund and Haida Gwaii. April loved to party, dancing, drumming and singing well into the night. She was passionate about social justice and the environment, and gave generously of her time and expertise in many volunteer roles. In lieu of flowers, please grow more veggies or consider a worm composter for your kitchen. Mom wanted us all to be more food secure, and she would be thrilled that we are getting the word out in her obituary.
Bob Antifave
November 19, 1960 - October 20, 2012 Remembering you is easy, I do it every day. Missing you is the hardest, that never goes away.
You are loved and missed every day by your family. ~ Cindy
