Tempco employees, all lined up and ready to serve the community, include [back row from left] Tye Leishman, Tristan Pope, Dean Merrick and Jeff Tucker, [middle row from left] Jeanette Leishman, Elie Pope, Crystal Burnett, Erin MacLean, Colin Turner, Matt McDowell and André Huiberts, [front row from left] James Leishman, Cahlie Pope, and Carter McDowell.

Tempco moves on up Heating and cooling specialists celebrate 10 years of service at new location Wow, what a difference 10 years of hard work makes. Powell River’s Heating & Cooling Specialists have just moved into their newly expanded location on Duncan Street (former Quality Parts location). Born and raised in Powell River, Tempco owner Tye Leishman had an idea to start a local business focused on providing the best customer service, employing the highest trained technicians and supporting the community. While the location is new, that same service and support will be available. “Providing such a high level of professionalism, many customers initially think Tempco is a franchise,” says Leishman. “We are 100 per cent locally owned, operated and independent.”

Tempco is also the factor y-aut hor i zed ex per t in Powell River for York, Regency, Carrier, Trane, Mit subish i a nd Fujit su high-efficient heating and cooling systems. Whether customers are looking to improve air quality in their homes, considering upgrades to existing home heating systems or having them tuned up and inspected, Tempco has been the trusted choice of Powell River homeowners for 10 years. “We have been helping homeowners save money and improve the comfort of their homes by upgrading existing heating systems with installations of high-efficient heat pumps, natural gas furnaces and Regency gas fireplaces, including Rinnai natural gas tankless hot water heaters,”

explains Leishman. Tye and his wife Jeanette are extremely proud of the highly trained exper t ise a nd capabi lity of team members Matt McDowell, Colin Turner, Dean Merrick, Tristan Pope, André Huiberts, Jeff Tucker, Crystal Burnett and Erin MacLean. “All Tempco heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians are expertly trained to handle any heating, air conditioning or commercial refrigeration requirements,” says Leishman. Company qualifications include government Red Seal-certified tradesmen, including refrigeration jou r ney men, elect r ica l journeymen and gas fitters. “Being an electrical contractor enables us to complete a variety of jobs

from start to finish, without the need to hire outside subcontractors,” says Leishman. “Tempco truly is your one-stop local HVAC shop.” Jeanette, a chartered professional accountant, takes care of the accounting components of the business, while Crystal and Erin talk to clients in need of service. “We know having the right people on the job is just as important as choosing the right equipment,” says Leishman. With energy efficiency and rising energy costs on every customer’s mind, Tempco offers many choices for upgrading existing heating systems. “FortisBC is offering a $1,700 rebate to homeowners who choose to switch out old, inefficient oil furnaces and replace

them with high-efficient natural gas furnaces,” says Leishman. “And Fortis just announced if you have your heating system and/or fireplace serviced by October 31, you could qualify for a $25 rebate on each.” Also, an $800 rebate is available from BC Hydro for customers installing a high-efficient ductless heat pump. “Combine that with our special consumer financing and thousands of dollars in manufacturers’ rebate offers and now is the perfect time to consider investing in high efficiency for your home,” says Leishman. Due to its mild West Coast climate, Powell River is one the best locations for an air source heat pump. Tempco offers two types: forced air units, using existing air

Legion hosts Tina Turner tribute Performer paying homage to legendary singer receives international attention Vancouver-based perfor mer Lu isa Ma rsha l l recently received international media attention when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show as Tina Turner, and everyone on set thought she was the real thing. The awardwinning tribute artist was invited onto the show to impersonate the legendary singer, but things took a left turn when Ellen introduced Marshall as Turner herself. “It was amazing. I was really stunned when she introduced me as Tina, because that wasn’t in the script,” says Marshall, who performs in Powell River on Friday, September 30. “When the end credits came on it said ‘Luisa Marshall as Tina Turner,’ but even my friends didn’t know it was me until then.” T he aut hent icit y of Marshall’s show has been the key to her longevity as a

Luisa Marshall recently fooled a international television audience with her Tina Turner tribute act, which comes to Powell River next Friday.

tribute artist. After countless shows performing as Turner, Marshall says it’s not the singing or perform-

ing that’s the most work; it’s the hair and makeup. “The preparation is quite alarming for me still. I want

everything perfect and I have to start with the hair; it’s always the hair, and the makeup,” she says. “Once you get that right, everything is fine. I just have to prepare for my songs and make sure I’m mentally ready for anything that can happen during the show.” Marshall’s show is a combination of tried-andtrue Turner classics such as “Private Dancer” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” along with songs from other singers, sung in character as Turner, which she says makes for an entertaining night. “Oh, we all have fun. I have a ver y engaging show,” says Marshall. “It’s about Tina’s songs and all of the other songs I wanted to perform. For example, I do Lady Gaga songs, but I perform them as Tina, so it’s really fun. I do Amy Winehouse, I do Shania Twain, and people are really surprised that I can do all of those songs while still doing Tina. It’s pretty exhilarating.” After all of her acclaim, is it safe to say that Marshall is the best Turner tribute artist in the world? “ W e l l ,” s h e l a u g h s , “there’s a reason why Ellen invited me to her show!”

Clean and simple

LET’S TALK TRASH Have you ever found yourself in the cleaning aisle searching for a non-toxic cleaner and being green-washed by the marketing? Trying to find a cleaning product that will cut through grease and sanitize a kitchen counter without being a health risk to your family or the fish living downstream of your drain is not always easy. Luckily, there are some great doit-yourself solutions you can make from items you probably already have in your cupboards. Homemade household cleaners are fairly simple to make and you can even ingest them and live to see another day. This is

Reference guide to ingredients

not the case with many commercial cleaners that don the “green” label. If you are looking to decrease the number of chemical cleaners in your household and all the packaging they come in, consider making your own instead. They are quick to make, affordable, versatile and truly eco-friendly. All-purpose cleaner: A favourite go-to recipe for a typical all-purpose cleaning spray for tubs, tiles, counters, microwaves and floors is to mix one gallon of hot water with half a cup of liquid Castile soap and 10 drops of essential oil. The oil is optional and, if using, you can choose one for scent, such as lemongrass or cleaning properties, such as germ-fighting thyme oil. Simply combine the ingredients and pour into a spray bottle. Stainless-steel cleaner: Stainless-steel appliances attract smudges and finger prints. For a quick fix, place a drop of olive oil on a rag, wipe the appliance and then turn the rag over and place a drop of vinegar on it, give another wipe and then let dry. Voilà! No need to purchase that specialized stainless-steel appliance cleaner with an ingredient list that is dubious at best. Be sure to label your homemade products and store them in a safe place. Hearing loss takes a toll

HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet An episode of Dragons’ Den on CBC introduced a young inventor who was offering a ringtone only the young could hear. He demonstrated that the dragons’ hearing was not up to the task. His tagline, “Ringtones adults can’t hear!” told the story. But were the dragons too far beyond their teen years, or

was it hearing loss? No one could blame the show ’s pa nel, because hearing loss is rather prevalent, affecting about 20 per cent of people aged 40 to 69, and double that for those over 70. Hearing loss tends to be gradual and we can often miss the changes. Hearing can be reduced by aging, long-term exposure to noise, injury or congenital disorder. It usually starts with losing the ability to hear high-frequency sounds. Early recognition of hearing loss and treatment can reduce some of its adverse results. Some signs your hearing is compromised include speaking louder than necessary, constantly asking for words to be repeated, misunderstanding conversations, especially in noisy situations, or turning up

the volume on televisions or radios. A person might favour one ear or think others are always mumbling. As hearing loss progresses, people may even start to withdraw from social contact. Hearing loss can be categorized into two types, or a combination of them. Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when the inner ear, auditory nerve or brain no longer detects sound waves norma lly. Some causes of sensorineural hearing loss include aging, excessive exposure to loud noise, infections and heredity. Conductive hearing loss occurs when the outer or middle ear cannot bring sound to the inner ear. This may be the result of ear canal or middle ear infection, fluid in the middle ear, perforation or scarring of the eardrum, wax buildup, or dislocation of the ossicles (three middle-ear bones). So, is losing some of your hearing such a big deal? Is it not just another aging factor? We tend to view hearing loss as rather inconsequential. Studies tell us a different story, linking hearing impairment to significant physical, social and psychological consequences, including isolation, loneliness, depression, falls and other accidents and an increased mortality rates. It can also take a toll on relationships. A large study in 2015 found people with hearing

loss had lower levels of cognitive function compared to those without hearing loss. One theory is that hearing loss compromises cognitive processes such as our working memory because our ability to hear clearly forces us to use so much extra effort. Other research suggests wearing a hearing aid benefits beyond just hearing better, including improving social interactions and reducing depression. In fact, the study also showed that those with hearing loss who wore hearing aids

had less cognitive decline over the years. Anyone who thinks they have hearing loss should be tested. Start with a visit to your doctor, who may do a simple screening and followup with a referral to a specialist. A doctor can also determine if there is any underlying cause for the hearing loss such as a chronic disease that affects blood supply. Some medications can also affect hearing, or it may even be as simple as buildup of earwax. Ample online resources

are available to find more information. Two good sources are the Canadian Hearing Society (chs.ca) and hear-it.org, which offers an online hearing test that might trigger followup with a visit to the doctor. The earlier hearing loss can be diagnosed and addressed, the better the long-term results. Paul Martiquet is the medical health officer for rural Vancouver Coastal Health, including Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Seato-Sky, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.

Robert Lynn (Bob/Bobby) July 30,1931 - September 15, 2016

At 85 years young and full of life, Bob passed peacefully at home with his family by his side. He was well known as “Taxi Bob” for 26 years. Bob retired from the mill in 1996. Life was a fascination for him and he collected many curious things. He was a family man, storyteller, dreamer and craftsman. Bob will be greatly missed by his wife Almeda of 61 years, children Christine (Terry), Ron and Rick (Tammy), grandchildren Jennifer, Andrea (Michael), Daniel (Jen) and Kelly (Christopher) and great-grandsons Logan and Tyler. A celebration of life will be held Monday, October 3, at 11:30 am at Carlson Community Club.

Carol May Tipton May 21, 1954 September 19, 2016 Carol was welcomed into the world in Enderby, BC, the daughter of Grace and Edgar Tipton. She passed away peacefully in a loving group home in Powell River at age 62 with her family around her. In 1954, children born with Down syndrome generally lived their lives in an institution, however, Carol was brought home to live with her family. Grace and Edgar could not imagine letting go of their special little girl and never regretted that decision for a minute. Carol brought love and joy to all who knew her. She was the youngest of five siblings and was predeceased by her parents and her eldest brother Nelson Tipton. Left to remember her with great love are her brother Brian Tipton and sisters Coranne Anderson and Lilla Tipton, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special thanks to the staff at Crofton House, nieces Tannis and Tyra Thulin and Dawn Scheves and sisters-in-law Joke Polman Tuin and Eileen Brown for all the love and attention you gave to Carol in her final years. Friends are invited to Jean Pike Centre for Inclusion, 7055 Alberni Street, in the ARC Theatre at 11 am on Saturday, October 1, to help Carol’s family celebrate her life. We will share some memories and remember Carol, followed by a party with lots of food and music; Carol loved a party. Take note that singing and dancing will take place. We will dance with Carol to the end of love.

Eugene "Gene" Hrynyk April 18, 1935 - September 18, 2016

Gene passed away peacefully in Powell River on Sunday, September 18, at the age of 81, with family and friends at his side. Gene will be lovingly remembered by his son Duane (Debi), daughter Rhonda, grandchildren Chad (Alex), Rob (Ashley), Tyler, Terra and Kyle, great-grandchildren Vincent, Addingtyn and Lachlan, brother Ernie and close friends Hilary and Don. Gene was predeceased by his partner Connie Knight. Gene was born in Myrnam, Alberta, and moved with his family to Powell River at the age of six. He worked on the paper machines at the Powell River mill for 45 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, going out in his boat and fishing. He loved to make people laugh and enjoyed working around his home, yard and garden. Baseball was also a big part of Gene’s life. A big thank-you to caregivers at Willingdon Creek Village for taking great care of our dad for the last few years. A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to Parkinson Canada.

Daryl William Poole Daryl left us suddenly for his next adventure on September 18, 2016, at the young age of 68. He was born and raised in Powell River, a town he loved, and worked all of his adult life at the mill. His dedication advanced him to purchasing manager, the job of his dreams. Daryl lived by his own rules. He was a man of integrity, fierce loyalty and honesty. He believed in hard work and good fun. He always had a healthy dose of both in his life and did his best to do things right. Daryl’s ultimate passion was fishing and he excelled at it! He was also a boater, a “boat mechanic,” an outstanding chef, a scotch connoisseur and the best martini maker ever. Daryl was a loving husband to Glynis Romanica, a dad to Tania (Wes) Brown and Jason (Angela) Poole, stepdad to Amber (Clemens) Riedl and Chelsea (Chris) Burwash, Kookpa to Rhys Poole and Tai Brown, Gramps to Abby and Olivia Poole, Paul and Elias Riedl, ‘Ampa to Alyssa Burwash, brother to Michael (Sandra) Poole, uncle to Nicholas and Naomi and families and doggy dad to Rico. Daryl was predeceased by his parents Cecil and Vera Poole and his canine fishing buddies Scooter and Karma. He was a good friend to many and his leaving has created a void impossible to fill. A celebration of his life will be held in the Pow Wow room at the Beach Gardens Resort from 4-7 pm on Saturday, September 24. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SPCA.

HEWITT, Anthony Roy August 21, 1925 - September 14, 2016 Roy Hewitt passed away peacefully in Powell River on the evening of September 14, 2016, after a brief illness. He is survived by his two remaining children, Lawrence and Alison (Mark). Roy was born in Southport, Lancashire in August 1925, where he spent his childhood and school years. He was an avid athlete, becoming captain of both the first nine and the first eleven during his later school years. (You can just look that up). At the age of 16, he met Doreen Redmond, a dynamic, high-spirited Irish girl, and while war and a term in the Royal Navy patrolling the Adriatic Sea intervened, she remained the love of his life until the day he died. They married in Roby, near Liverpool, in 1948. Two boys, David and Lawrence, were born in Lancashire during the time Roy worked as a bobby with the Lancashire Constabulary. With the advent of the Suez crisis in 1956, they decided to emigrate to Canada, and came directly to Powell River in 1957. Alison was born in the Powell River General Hospital the following year. Roy worked as an electrician with MacMillan Bloedel for the remainder of his working life. He was active in those early years with the Boy Scouts, and as a parent with the Highland Laddies Pipe Band. He loved to go out dancing with Doreen, and they spent many an evening at Hitching Post square dances, dances at the Legion or Dwight Hall or taking ballroom dance classes. After retiring, Roy loved to go fishing and hiking in the bush, and with a couple of buddies, he rounded up a few other retired guys to help build a trail and a small footbridge. So the BOMB Squad (Bloody Old Mens’ Brigade) was born. Roy reaped the benefits of fresh air and exercise and enjoyed the camaraderie as the group grew. Shep, Roy’s devoted border collie, was a constant companion on those outings. Many others still enjoy the activity of the BOMB Squad as it continues to thrive. Roy and Doreen traveled extensively in their retirement, with many trips to the UK with friends, to New Zealand to see relatives, and of course to Hawaii, which they loved. In the seven years since Doreen passed away, Roy has lived quietly at home with the Cat, not able to get about as briskly as before, but with a life full of memories; a life well-lived. We would like to thank the many friends and helping hands who have taken care of Roy over the last while, particularly the staff of Community Health, who helped Roy stay in his home, Dr. Rossouw and staff, whose compassion and concern were a constant reassurance, and the staff of PRGH and Evergreen, who looked after him at the end. A simple gathering for friends will be held at Stubberfield’s on Thursday, September 29 at 3:00 PM.

A year has passed without you, the number one of two old crows: wife, mother, sister, grandmother, greatgrandmother, aunt, best friend forever and friend. Thinking of you with love today and every day. We miss you, your wit, sense of humour and your one raised eyebrow. You are always in our thoughts and in our hearts. Your star shines bright in the sky. We look for you often. With love from Ian, Dawn, Terry and family xoxo

STEUART DUNIPACE FERGUSON October 23, 1927 - September 13, 2016

It is with saddened hearts we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Steuart, with family by his side. Dad is survived by his children Judith (John) Langham, Doug Ferguson, Susan (Dan) Stoltz, Drew (Brenda) Ferguson and John (Kimberley) Ferguson, his sister Bernice Desaulniers, sister-in-law Louise Ferguson, stepchildren Don, Jan and David Bowes and their families and Kathy (John) Tait. He is also survived by grandchildren Allison and Mike (Karen) Ellerby; Shane, Robert (Sarah) and Drew Stoltz; Cailan, Craig (Andrea) and Arran Ferguson; Jessica (Tomislav), Katelin (Phil) and Charlotte Bowes and great-grandchildren Kaci, Austin and Bryce Ellerby; Gordon and Jack Stoltz; Max and Ben Lavoie and many nieces and nephews. Steuart was predeceased by his wife Margaret in 2014, first wife Beatrice, siblings David, Rod and Beverly, parents John and Annie Ferguson and grandson Steuart Ellerby. Steuart was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the oldest of five, and was 13 when his mother passed away. He left school at an early age to help his father with his younger siblings. Later, he worked for Canadian National Railway. Starting as a cadet in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, he enjoyed his time as a drummer and went on to be a champion bass drummer. Dad married Beatrice and had three children, Judy, Doug and Susan, born in Winnipeg. Powell River Company mill needed a bass drummer and it was decided he would move his family to Powell River in 1956. Dad and Beatrice had two more children, Drew and John, born in Powell River. Dad was involved in many activities over the years, especially soccer and track and field. He coached children, including his own, in soccer and refereed for many years. Later he enjoyed Villa games and his time in the “Zoo.” Dad and his brother David coached track and field for years and had many top athletes in BC. In 1975, Dad married Margaret Bowes. They had a wonderful life for 40 years. They loved to go fishing and boating in his boat the Dunipace with family and friends and loved to entertain at their house. With Margaret's encouragement, Dad got back into singing and joined Chor Musica and Powell River Chorus. Dad was involved in Kathaumixw and loved being a host family. They enjoyed going out and staying at the cabin at Canoe Bay and swimming in the ocean. Dad and Margaret also loved to go camping and took their trailer down to Arizona. He was a loving husband and spent time with Maggie every day when she was at Olive Devaud Residence and Evergreen Care Unit. Dad was very involved in his grandchildren's lives and made every one of them feel special. Family meant everything to Dad: family dinners, Christmas dinners, Easter egg hunts and Boxing Day with his sons hitting golf balls into the ocean. Dad had a great sense of humour, loved to sing his silly songs and tell his stories. He had a twinkle in his eye, a great laugh and a beautiful voice when he sang. He was always whistling a tune and drumming his fingers on the kitchen table, which will not be forgotten. Dad belonged to Royal Canadian Legion, Moose Lodge, Carlson Community Club, Myrtle Point Golf Club, soccer clubs and the pipeband, and he enjoyed singing O Canada at Powell River Kings games. Many thanks to Dr. Bruce Hobson, Dr. Charles Van Zyl and staff at Willingdon Creek Village, with special thanks to house number five for dad's care. The bowl of peppermints are on the table, Dad. Love ya and leave ya. A church service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church at 1 pm on Saturday, October 15. A celebration of life will follow at 2:30 pm at Carlson Community Club. In lieu of flowers, donations to Powell River Academy of Music is our dad’s wish.

Fall Fair 2016

The theme for this year’s annual Fall Fair was “Come Together,” and that is what Powell River did on Saturday, September 17, and Sunday, September 18. The fall celebration of harvest and community was sponsored by Powell River and District Agricultural Association, which recently merged with Powell River Farmers’ Institute. A tradition for friends, families and, especially, children, the event marks the seasonal transition from summer to fall. DAVE BRINDLE PHOTOS
