Gardeners reap rewards
T&R Contracting incorporates Salish Soils products into customer options In the third year of their joint business endeavour, T&R Contracting owners Shaun and Raeann Gloslee and Dan and Bonnie Robinson continue to supply customers with locally produced aggregate products, yard and garden materials and property services. The partners have added to the company’s growing and evolving line of products by fostering relationships with other companies in order to keep up with consumer demand. In addition to an ongoing relationship with cement-products manufacturer Hyland Precast, and having FlexMSE bags in stock for customers looking for eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing vegetated living-wall systems, T&R is now supplying a full line of Salish Soils products. “We’ve had a relationship with Salish Soils for three years to sell their Original Fish Compost,” says Bonnie. “By popular demand, we are able to bring it back and supply even more.” Created from a locally sourced blend of fish residuals, including Agrimarine Lois Lake trout and Tla’amin and Shíshálh territory salmon, the fish compost is also used to make two other Salish products, Garden Mix and Landscape Mix, by combining it with screened T&R sand based on Salish’s specifications. “We test every pile and make every batch the same,” says Salish Soils representative Aaron Joe. “We’ve been at this for seven years and have learned a lot about making really good soil.” An in-vessel, enclosed system NEED A

The result is a weed-free, nutrient-rich product full of nitrogen that grows beautiful produce, flowers and trees, says Aaron. “Our model is not a waste-management model, it is a soil model,” he adds. “We love making great soil.” As part of a pilot project, composted food and garden residuals from Powell River and Sechelt is sent to Salish Soils to create another new product, Raincoast Blend, which is best used for landscaping and hardy planting. “We are able to take something from our own community and bring it back in a usable form,” says Bonnie. “We are proud to be carrying these products.” According to Bonnie, compost should always be added to existing gardens prior to planting season. “If the soil is dead with no nuNT ABLE | EFFICIE | DEPEND POWERFUL

The biannual Celebration of Quilts, put on by Timberlane Quilters’ Guild this year, also celebrates the guild’s 30-year history. The two-day event at Dwight Hall will be the guild’s biggest ever and feature quilts of all different shapes and sizes, according to membership chair Gail Crosfield. “The quilt guild is always excited about this event because we have more than 200 quilts on display, plus there are vendors, a lunch room and a place for the kids to interact with quilting,” says Crosfield. “There were also be raffles and door prizes to be won. It will probably be the last time we only charge $5 for this event.” The $5 admission fee gains attendees access to a plethora of quilting styles with a decorating theme of Canadiana to help celebrate Canada 150. An onsite guild boutique features bed quilts and table toppers as well as kitchen accessories, purses, wallets, art pieces and many other gift ideas. “Quilts are so much more than just a bed cover,” says Crosfield, “they are pictures, landscape and portrait, still life and action, and range in size from 12-by-12 inches to more than eightby-eight feet.” The quilt show will also feature the guild’s community quilts, which are crafted by the members to give away to local causes, such as the oncology unit at Powell River General Hospital
Applications and funding criteria are available online at powellriverartscouncil.ca or may be picked up at the Powell River Visitor Centre office.

“A quilt show is a place where all the members of the guild bring out the quilts they have made and want to display,” says Crosfield. “Two years ago, we had more than 700 people at the event, including from Vancouver Island and other BC cities. We’re hoping for another huge turnout this year.”

• Raincoast Blend remove these bear and rodent attractants from their garbage and backyard composter. Bokashi fermentation is a unique way to deal with kitchen scraps. It is an indoor method of composting where a microorganism-enriched powder is sprinkled over each layer of scraps, essentially fermenting the material. To complete the process, it is buried into the ground, where it quickly composts. With so many options, you are sure to find one way to compost that is perfect for you. Keep in mind that composting has a significant impact on garbage, reducing household volumes by up to 50 per cent. If the rainy weather has dampened your courage to backyard compost, you are probably not alone. Venturing out into a downpour with a bucket of kitchen scraps can prove challenging for even the most committed zero-waster. Maybe it is time to become creative. Did you know there are many different options when it comes to converting banana peels or stale bread into food for the soil? Worm-bin composting can be done inside and out because of our mild climate. All that is required is some basic bedding for the squirmy creatures. They can thrive on a combination of hay, newspaper, manure, leaves and kitchen scraps. Plans for making worm bins are readily available online. A converted freezer compost is a great local option. Open-sourced plans are available at letstalktrash.ca and show how to transform a broken (rust-free) freezer into a high heat, efficient composter. They are rat-proof, bear-resistant and can be stored in a garage or anywhere in your yard. Conversion takes most people an afternoon after the freon is removed by a professional. Cost averages around $60 for parts. Residents and businesses are also invited to bring kitchen scraps to Town Centre Recycling Depot for free. The collected materials are then transported to Sechelt where it is composted at Salish Soils. This program accepts items such as meat, fish and dairy, so residents can

Q. I made a representation agreement naming my nephew as my medical decision maker many years ago. Our relationship has since soured and I want to cancel the agreement. What do I need to do?
Catalyst Paper Powell River Division will be testing the full mill evacuation alarm on Wednesday, April 5th at 11am. This alarm test will sound for approximately 60 seconds.
A. Section 27 of the Representation Agreement Act allows you to revoke the agreement in writing, so long as you sign the revocation in front of a witness who also signs it. You must provide a copy of the revocation to your nephew in order for it to become effective. Your nephew may be able to make an objection to the public guardian and trustee regarding the revocation if he has reason to believe that you are not currently competent, or that you are acting under the influence of another party, or if the revocation is clearly inconsistent with your current wishes, values, beliefs or best interests. If you need to make or cancel a representation agreement, please contact me.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

1105 Obituaries Delma Chew (née Sawatzky) It is with deep sadness that the family of Delma Chew announces her passing, after a short battle with leukemia, on Friday, March 24, at the age of 82 years. Delma, with her husband Harland, spent many happy times travelling across Canada, United States, Mexico and Cuba. Delma will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 22 years Harland; her children Rick (José), James (Lise), Gail, Lorie (Vince) and Thomas (Jemma); Harland’s children Monte and partner Judy, Dale, Lorrie and Shannon; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters and two brothers. Delma was predeceased by stepson Carter and grandson Adrian. A wake (celebration of life) will be held at a later date.
Lucille Martineau 1935-2017
It is with a heavy heart that we announce that our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Lucille Martineau (née Morin), born in Cochrane, Ontario, passed away on Monday, March 20, at the age of 82. She leaves in mourning her husband Theodore, her six daughters, five sons, six siblings and numerous relatives and friends. A kind, patient soul dedicated to family, Lucille loved gardening, flowers and birds and will be missed and remembered for her bright, smiling spirit. A funeral service and mass will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, April 1, at Church of the Assumption, 7109 Glacier Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the church. Funeral home services: Stubberfield Funeral Home Ltd, 604.485.4112, stubberfieldfh.com.
Norah Muriel McNair (née Paine) March 23, 1927 - March 22, 2017
Norah Muriel McNair died peacefully on her mother’s birthday. She was one day shy of 90 and would have been pleased to avoid the fuss of a celebration. Norah moved to Stillwater from Vancouver in 1949 to teach, married Almer McNair two years later and, with her husband, created a beautiful family home in Douglas Bay. Always a teacher at heart, Norah was a role model and mentor to many, including the friends of her children who stayed connected and close to her. Most Saturday mornings her friends would drop by for a chat, some advice, or to discuss the latest opera news while she baked cookies, pies and bread for the week. Her baking was a treat many people enjoyed, especially her cinnamon buns, brownies and cream puffs. Norah loved her house and garden and was often seen moving flowers, shrubs and trees on the property to get the right plant in the right place. She would rearrange the living room furniture as well, to catch the best view and to confuse her husband. Norah’s house and garden were filled with her favourite colour: royal blue. She was seldom seen wearing a different colour and she loved shopping for anything in blue. Norah was a compassionate and “true-blue” friend. She loved her family and her friends’ families. Her grandchildren Alexi and Daniel were very special to her and she was grateful for the time she spent with her great-granddaughter Elizabeth. Norah’s children Norah-Lee, Rod and Cam, her son-in-law Phil and daughter-in-law Maria would like to thank Doctor Dohm and the staff of Powell River General Hospital for the wonderful care and kindness they gave to their mother. A celebration of Norah’s life will be held in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations to BC SPCA would be appreciated.

LETHAL DRUGS ARE out there
Find out how you can save a life. Every day, people are losing their lives to overdoses in BC. These deaths are preventable. Many illegal drugs, including party drugs, have been found to contain deadly fentanyl. And even more toxic carfentanil is now being detected in BC. Not using drugs is the best defence — using alone is the greatest risk. If you use drugs or know someone who does, help is available. Learn about treatment, and where to find naloxone and overdose prevention sites in your area by calling 8-1-1 or visiting www.gov.bc.ca/overdose. Your knowledge, compassion and action can save a life.
