Transition benefits travellers
After 30 years of selling travel, including the last 17 years out of an office on the second floor of the First Credit Union building, Powell River Cruise and Travel owner Viv Watson is transitioning the local travel agency from a storefront to a home-based business. “I’m still licensed, monitored and regulated by Consumer Protection BC and the Insurance Council of BC, just as any storefront would be,” says Watson. “Nothing changes, except that my desk is moving.” As a result of the move, along with downsizing, more time will be available to assist individual clients with custom tours and travel options in a variety of areas. “I like the idea of specializing and really focusing on customer service,” says Watson. “I’m also going to focus a lot more on marketing my services through social media.” While some clients already know where they want to go and just require help coordinating the logistics, Watson says others change their minds after an initial consultation and end up travelling elsewhere after exploring other options. “Some people come in with a lot of knowledge from the internet, which sometimes can be a wee bit dangerous,” she says, “as it doesn’t really weed out the downsides or hidden pitfalls.” In those circumstances, guidance and additional consulting from an experienced travel agent can help alleviate any misconceptions and put people back on

the right track toward a fulfilling travel experience. “Then there are people who come in and say, ‘I just want to go away for two weeks and this is amount of money I want to spend,’” says Watson. “That can be fun, too.” Currently, due to less-than-ideal local weather, sun destinations are popular with customers. Powell River Cruise and Travel can help people with standard vacation requests, to sunny and warm locales, or offer more of a non-traditional option. “One of the new up-and-coming destinations is Iceland,” says Watson. “With seasonal direct flights out of Seattle, it has become more accessible from the west coast.” For more adventurous travel-
lers, Myanmar presents an opportunity for exploration of an emerging travel destination. “Lots of travellers are still looking for something a little bit off the beaten track, and while they are becoming fewer and farther between, Slovenia might also fit the bill,” says Watson. “With lots of unspoiled countryside and extraordinary natural diversity, it

has a lot to offer.” Watson books flights, accommodations, cruises and rail travel for individuals, couples or groups. Her company is not limited to specific cruise lines or tours and offers experiences through a multitude of operators. “Whatever people want to do, we can help them, with no limitations,” says Watson.

Through an affiliation with the Travel Agent Next Door, a homebased umbrella company for home-based travel agents, Powell River Cruise and Travel has access to a broad range of programs and suppliers, which is an additional benefit for travellers. “It was started by a longtime travel acquaintance, and being 100 per cent Canadian-owned, it fit into my marketing and business needs,” says Watson. Through her own extensive travel history, Watson has firsthand knowledge of many of the countries her customers inquire about, and she has her favourites. “I’ve been to many places, but definitely the highlights would be Africa, Morocco and Vietnam, and cooking school in Italy,” she says, “Along the way I have seen a thing or two and look forward to sharing that with fellow enthusiasts.” For more information, c a l l 6 0 4.4 8 3. 8 6 97 or em a i l viv@prcruisetravel.ca.

Lounge features trivia night
Powell River’s hottest band
$25 per person
An upcoming Rock ’n’ Roll Trivia night at That Sugar Vault is sure to test your musical smarts, with food and drink specials to make the night even better. One of many upcoming events at the licensed lounge and restaurant located near River City Coffee, Rock ’n’ Roll Trivia is the brainchild of longtime radio DJ and self-proclaimed music expert Zane Sampson. Sampson recently launched the trivia series after suggesting the idea to That Sugar Vault co-owner Amy Sharp. A debut trivia night in November featured different categories, but Sampson says he is especially excited for the rock and roll version. “I’m really excited about this one. The general trivia was a lot of fun, but I’m really looking forward to the rock and roll trivia because it is my forte,” says Sampson. “The trivia nights are really laid back and there’s no pressure, and the winning teams in each round win some prizes.” Sampson says participants for the free event don’t need to be rock and roll experts to play, and people are encouraged to come and watch if they don’t think they will know the answers. However, many will be surprised, he says. “There are some harder questions,

but that’s all relative because even at the last trivia some of questions I thought would be easier weren’t, and some of the ones I thought would be hard were no-brainers,” says Sampson. Sharp says That Sugar Vault is planning to host regular trivia nights among the lounge’s many other special events. The business’ motto is “inclusiveness” and a full menu including desserts is available Wednesday to Sundays from 4 pm until late. “We are a licensed restaurant that serves food late and is fun for families earlier in the evening,” says Sharp, “but also fun for people who enjoy socializing and eating late.”
Other That Sugar Vault events during December include an Ed Wood Sexy Sweater Club night on December 16, Murder Mystery Dinner with host Kyle Auclair on December 17 and New Year’s Eve Glow in the Dark Party on December 31.

OUR BIGGEST SALE OF THE YEAR. ALL HUNTER DOUGLAS WINDOW COVERINGS ON SALE!
How much of our community’s garbage can be turned into a nutrient-rich soil amendment? More than you might imagine. One local resident decided to find out. Ellen Gould, her husband Murray Dobbin and three of her condominium neighbours, Shirley and Dennis Hatch and Syd Riley, decided to combine their kitchen scraps and take them to the new community composting area at Town Centre Recycling Depot in the parking lot next to Rona. Once a week, Gould drops off a large bucket full of what could have become garbage. Powell River has some of the highest tipping fees in the province due to the great distance garbage travels to the nearest landfill that will receive its waste. Our garbage is trucked, barged and put on a train while travelling more than 700 kilometres to Rabanco, Washington, only to be landfilled. Canada may have a lot of land, but landfills require permitting and costs can be prohibitive. On top of costs is the “not in my backyard” factor that accompanies this type of project. Gould and her neighbours, however, were motivated by much more than the free disposal fees for kitchen scraps. “It’s so easy every Monday morning to empty my neighbours’ compost pails into mine and take it to the depot on my way to the recreation complex,” says Gould. “I’m so glad we have a way of putting all this

food waste to good use, even meat and fish bones. The entire job takes all of five minutes and it’s such a positive thing to do for the environment.” With 40 per cent of our waste being compostable, our town has the opportunity to reduce its waste significantly, all while creating food for the soil. Powell River Regional District’s composting pilot project is open to residents and businesses. For more information, go to letstalktrash.ca. THE LAW CORNER Q: What happens if I can’t find my original Will or original Power of Attorney? Will a photocopy do? A: If you die and your original Will cannot be found, it may be presumed you revoked your Will by destroying it unless there is sufficient evidence to the contrary. Without such evidence the law may determine who receives your estate. If you do not have your original Power of Attorney, a photocopy may be ineffective as institutions usually will require the original or a certified true copy. It is very important that you keep your Will and POA in a safe place.

W i t h G o o g l e , Yo uTu b e and social media solidly a part of our daily information experience, do libraries still have a role to play? Yes. People come to the library to read, relax, learn new skills, be inspired by the knowledge of others and work on their personal goals. The library is no longer FOR YOUR defined by the number of books REFERENCE on its shelves; we connect our By Rebecca Burbank community to much more, so people can find the support they need to achieve their goals. Whether it is patrons who are learning to read or those who are building the skills to start a business, for so many the library is a part of the picture. Diverse support is the new strength of public libraries; we are able to guide people to a variety of learning experiences. In addition to sending a patron home from a computer class with books to continue their learning, they have access to expert online tutorials and new connections with staff and neighbours. When people learn together in a computer course they are growing and building our community. We all benefit from their success. I am constantly impressed by what members of our community do with the resources they have at Powell River Public Library, and I cannot wait to see what we are able to do in our new space next year.

Headache causes and treatments Who has not had a headache? Like the common cold, headaches can be just a part of life, and similar to the common cold, we mostly do not know where they come from or how to cure them. For many people, a headache is an occasional annoyance or discomfort, but for others, they are a recurrent, sometimes disabling, problem. We can describe types of headaches and related symptoms, but to pinpoint their cause is much less likely. Headache pain occurs when sensitive nerve endings in the skull, scalp, neck and neighbouring tissues send pain messages to the brain; the brain itself has no pain sensors. Headaches are divided into two main types: secondary and primary. Secondary headaches are relatively straightforward because they can be explained and treated. That is, they are secondary to another, underlying disorder such as infection or trauma. Not so much with
HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet primary headaches, which have no identifiable cause and are the most common. The headache we hear about most is a migraine, partly because it can be so debilitating. It is fairly common, affecting about one third of the population. Migraines tend to affect men more often, about three to one versus women. The onset of migraines usually occurs in teenage years or 20s and peaks during a person’s 30s. They tend to ease or even stop as a person becomes older. About a third of people describe (neurologica l)
symptoms at the start of a migraine: distorted vision, shooting lights, blind spots or temporary loss of vision. The pain can be incapacitating and last from a few hours to several days and may be accompanied by nausea and severe sensitivity to light or noise. While the cause of a migraine is unknown, it is believed to begin in the brain as a neurological dysfunction. It may involve imbalances in brain chemicals, notably serotonin, which helps regulate the perception of pain. Also, genetics are likely at play as migraines show up within families. What we might call the common headache is the t en sion he a d a c he, s o called because it seems related to stress and tension that generates muscle contraction and tightness. These headaches show up as dull pain or pressure around the forehead or the back of the head and neck; the pain may feel like a clamp squeezing the skull. These are the most com-
mon type for adults. While the cause is unknown, the pain is associated with fatigue, anxiety, eyestrain, stress and depression. The pain of a cluster headache can be excruciating. These occur in cyclical patterns and will often awaken a person in the middle of the night with intense pain in or around one eye on one side of the head. Cluster periods can last from weeks to months, but then go into remission for long periods. The cause of cluster headaches is unknown, but the
patterns suggest abnormalities in the body’s biological clock play a role. Unlike migraine and tension headaches, a cluster headache is generally not associated with triggers such as foods, hormonal changes or stress. Exertion headaches arise after strenuous physical activity. This suggests they may be caused by abrupt dilation or constriction of blood vessels. Because an exertion-related headache can also be a sign of brain hemorrhage, seek treatment right away from a doctor.
Treating headaches is often left to the sufferer. Overthe-counter painkillers can help treat symptoms, but so too can a heating or cooling gel pack. Relaxation techniques can help, as will good posture, especially at a desk or computer. Try to identify foods or other triggers. Headaches can be inconvenient, or debilitating, but there are ways to help keep them at bay. Dr Paul Martiquet is the Medical Health Officer for the Sunshine Coast and Powell River.

In loving memory of David Court
Wonder (Wendy May) Mitchell Wonder returned as a shining light to Spirit on Tuesday, November 29, after 70 years of living an interesting, sometimes challenging and fun-filled life. Wonder always had a circle of loving playmates. She created beautiful spaces wherever she lived and invited her friends to play and relax. She reminded us all of the child within. Her generosity and spirit were truly limitless. She will be missed by her many friends. A celebration of Wonder will be held in the spring of 2017.

Marliene is survived by her husband and best friend Lee and daughter Nicole (Alf) Gaudet. She was known by many as a kind, caring, generous and witty, yet private, person. She touched the lives of many and will be missed greatly. Dad and I would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who looked after Marliene, all our friends who texted, emailed, called or brought us food and flowers, and showed their support by being there for every minute of her last days. Thanks also to my co-workers and boss, who supported me and allowed me to be home by her side, and to my cousins (Dean, Kelly, Bill and wife Andra Garrett), we could not have remained strong and positive without all your love and support and it meant the world to Dad, Alf and I to have you there.
