Help for keeping warm this winter Coats for Kids and Families gathering cold-weather items With ca lendars now flipped to November and several months of cold weather approaching, organizers involved with Coats for Kids and Families are busy collecting and organizing community donations of winter clothing in preparation for their annual Giveaway Day charity event. Collections for the joint initiative between Powell River Lions Club, Westview Baptist Church and the Salvation Army began in October. Organizers are asking area residents to donate extra coats, jackets, sweaters and other warm winter clothing. “ We t a k e a n y t h i n g that keeps people warm: boots, shoes, blankets and sheets and all outerwear,” says coordinator Marilyn Brooks, who works yearround to distribute clothing through the Salvation Army and Community Resource Centre. “Every piece helps.” As long as it is clean and in good condition, any warm item is a welcome donation. Donations will be accepted in bins at drop off locations at Westview Baptist Church, the Salvation Army and in Town Centre Mall beside Walmart, Suzanne’s and the administration office until Thursday, November 10. Giveaway Day takes place
in the old Select Video location between Town Centre Mall and Town Centre Hotel. Families and individuals unable to purchase cold-weat her clot h i ng are invited to drop in and search through shelves and racks set up inside for items to keep them warm throughout winter months. “Anyone in need is welcome to come in if they require a winter coat or other winter clothing,” says Brooks. “We have from infant sizes all the way up into the plus sizes for adults.” W h i le orga n i zers accept clothing for all ages, Brooks says there is great need in the community for footwear and men’s items. “We go through a lot of men’s wear,” she says, “and people can’t afford to buy shoes. As the cost of living goes up, the need is becoming greater.” In each of the past two years, organizers have handed out more than 2,000 items of clothing on Giveaway Day; 10 times the amount given away in 2006, the first year the event was held. “The very first year it was pouring rain and we had a young mom come in; her baby had an undershirt and a diaper on, that was it,” says Brooks. “He left all bundled up because we had clothes for him.”
Coats for Kids and Families coordinator Marilyn Brooks [left] and volunteer Pat Myers.
For all the volunteers involved, helping people is the reward for the efforts they put in to make the donations possible. “On another occasion, I
was helping a young dad who seemed to be upset,” says Brooks. “He said, ‘You have no idea how much this helps me. I have four children and I can’t afford

to clothe them.’ That’s why we do this, for moments like that, because there are people in genuine need.” Brooks says the difficulty in Powell River is that

poverty is not obvious and because people are not panhandling on street corners or at the doors to the mall, most residents are not aware of how many are suffering. “Last year we had a gentleman who found some shoes and asked a checkout person when he was leaving if there was a garbage can,” says Brooks. “He handed her his old shoes and there were no soles left in the bottom.” In addition to warm clothing, cash donations are also accepted, and will go toward purchasing coats in sizes that are lacking after all of the donated items are combed through and organized. Coats for Kids and Families’ Giveaway Day takes place from 10 am-2 pm on Saturday, November 12. Kiwanis Club of Powell River will also be on site providing free coffee and hot chocolate. “When we open at 10 am, it is one coat per person in each family,” says Brooks. “Whatever donations we have here on Giveaway Day will be distributed. We don’t want to have to pack anything up at the end of the day.” O r g a n i z er s a r e s t i l l looking for additional volunteers to help out on Giveaway Day. I love playing old theatres; they’re beautiful.” Having lived back east for more than 10 years in the small Atlantic coast town of Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Crowe says although she does miss her West Coast home, she is able to visit often and doesn’t feel like her new home is all that dif-

Nanaimo-born singer and multiinstrumentalist Allison Crowe has spent many years performing as a solo artist, but her latest tour includes the debut of new music with a full band. Crowe’s band features mandolinist, guitarist and singer Sarah White, bassist Dave Baird and cellist and vocalist Lin, and she says she is thrilled to be playing with them. “It’s been awesome. I played solo for a lot of years, and the main reason was budgetary, because it’s easier to tour as one person,” says Crowe, “but I really enjoy playing music with other people and having that communication on stage. There’s so much more experimenting in a different way than playing solo.” T h e b a n d ’s d e b u t a l b u m , Introducing / Heirs+Grievances, a genre-spanning mix of Canadiana, Celtic, jazz, roots, folk, soul and rock, allowed the powerfully voiced Crowe, who also plays piano, guitar, fiddle and bodhran Irish drum, the chance to fully realize the songs she wanted to write, with help from her bandmates. That fuller and more textured sound translates perfectly to the current live show, she says. “There were all of these things that, when I was writing a song, I could hear, but I couldn’t do it all at once myself,”

Getting to the core Whether or not you have stopped off at the Town Centre recycling depot with a bucket of kitchen scraps or a bag of leaves, you have probably heard of Powell River’s Community Organics Recovery Exchange (CORE). Powell River Regional District’s pilot collection program for kitchen scraps and yard waste launched on October 1. By the end of the first month more than 50 people per day were dropping off organics in the green bin and more were bringing truckloads to Sunshine Disposal and Recycling. Let’s Talk Trash has been on hand all month to help with the launch and it has become clear that there are a lot of passionate people in Powell River who do not want to throw food in the garbage. Here are answers to some common questions about the program: Where does the CORE green bin collection go? Collected organics are sent to Salish Soils in Sechelt for processing. Salish Soils employs a composting process that uses “Gore” technology and produces a class-A compost approved by the BC Ministry of Environment. The curbside food collection is blended with wood waste to produce a nutritious blend of natural, organic soil amendment. Salish Soils was established in 2010 by CEO Aaron Joe and team with community support and

waste volumes so there is a stronger business case for a local facility. Should we still compost in our backyards? Yes. Backyard composting is still the best local option when done properly. If you are composting at home but do not want to include bear, raccoon or rodent attractants like meat, fish, dairy and cooked food, just bring those items to the green bin at the depot. When will food scraps and yard waste be collected curbside? City of Powell River is launching a food scraps and yard waste curbside pilot program in spring 2017. Stay tuned for more information.
What do you do if you have great friends who worked really hard to add thousands of new books to your library, but you don’t have space yet to shelve them? You open a pop-up location to make them available to the public and get those books out the door to the people who want FOR YOUR to read them. REFERENCE Powell River Friends of the By Rebecca Burbank Library raised more than $50,000 for new books and materials to fill shelves at the larger library space we are moving into. These materials are ordered far in advance of their publication dates. In order to make them available while they are new and in high demand, the library will be utilizing the city-owned meeting room above the new library space to run a pop-up. This temporary space will give Powell River a taste of the new library. If you want to read the latest and greatest in our collection but can’t make it over to the pop-up, don’t worry, all holds placed on library materials will be available to pick up at our 4411 Michigan Avenue location. Place a hold through your library account or stop in to browse the new books. Doors will be open from 10 am2 pm Tuesday through Thursday at 6975 Alberni Street.

RASPBERRIES
A highway strewn with Roses for the good samaritans who stopped for me when my car blew a rod shortly after driving off the ferry. You all waited with me while I called the tow truck. Extra Roses to the couple who insisted on waiting with me until the tow truck came. Because of people like you, I love this town. Roses to Powell River’s customer service and overall cleanliness, from tourists who will definitely be back. Raspberries to the person who keeps letting their dog run around the neighbourhood. The leash laws apply to everybody! A huge bouquet of yellow Roses to the woman who returned my coat after it was accidentally sold at the thrift shop. You have restored my faith in humanity. It’s nice to know there are still people like you in the world. Raspberries to the fellow who pulled in front of me on Marine Avenue and then acted like it was my fault. Slow down and pay attention, sir! Roses to the man who helped children build birdhouses at a recent fair for them to take home. He did not butt in and do it for them or show them how to do it “right.” Each child went home with a birdhouse to be ever so proud of. Forever Roses to all doctors and staff of our local extended care home for the wonderful and warm, loving attention they gave to our father and grandfather during the 16 months he stayed with you.

Common colds and seasonal illnesses Kids have been back at school for a while and Halloween is out of the way, so what’s next? Seasonal illness, of course (you thought Christmas, right?). By now many children will have had their first cold of the season. In fact, getting a cold is a commonplace event for most kids, who will average six to eight colds per year. Today’s common childhood illnesses are more benign than those faced by their parents or grandparents. Past generations faced not just the common cold, but also diseases that have mostly disappeared, among them measles, mumps and chicken pox, all of which can have serious consequences. Modern vaccinations have made these diseases far less prevalent. Many of the seasonal illnesses we face start out with sniffles, a cough and maybe a fever. Heading the list is the common cold, so-called because it is just that, common. This illness is caused by a number of different viruses, but most
HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet often by the rhinovirus. A cold usually begins with a sore throat, which often goes away after a day or two. Nasal symptoms, runny nose and congestion follow, along with a cough. Younger children may also experience low-grade fever. The spread of the virus peaks on the third day. It makes sense, therefore, to stay out of school (or work) at least until the fourth day to avoid sharing the cold. Colds are spread through the air by droplets expelled in coughing or sneezing, and by touch. By now we
have all learned to cough into our elbow, but make sure your child knows this, too. Regular hand washing is an important practice to prevent spreading the virus and to avoid picking it up. Treating a cold is aimed entirely at the symptoms because antibiotics are of no use, ever, against a virus-caused illness. The cold will go away on its own after about a week. In the meantime, the best plan is to treat its effects. Overthe-counter cold medications can relieve symptoms including sore throat, run-
ny nose, congestion and cough, while warm fluids like soup and herbal teas can comfort and rehydrate. Less common but even more contagious is conjunctivitis (pink eye), an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that covers the front of the eyeball and lines the inside of the eyelids. Pink eye can be caused by either a bacteria or a virus; there are two different types of the illness. In either case, your child will wake up with a crusty, sticky eye that is “glued
shut.” When it is finally open, the eye is red and watering. The most common form is viral conjunctivitis, caused by the same viruses that cause the common cold. There will be a watery discharge, some stringy mucus, redness and the eye can feel gritty and burning. This infection is selflimited, which means it will go away on its own. Bacterial conjunctivitis will show most of the same symptoms but with a difference in the discharge. Instead of watery, it will be white, yellow or green and
will probably reappear after wiping. Treatment for this form of pink eye is with antibiotic eye ointment. This time of year is also when we start getting vacci nated for i n f luen za. While the flu exhibits many of the symptoms of a cold, they will usually be more severe and last longer. Paul Martiquet is the medical health officer for rural Vancouver Coastal Health, including Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Seato-Sky, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.
November 11th, Remembrance Day. It was our great-great grandparents, our grandparents, uncles and aunts, moms and dads. It was our friends and neighbours, and now it’s even our children. It’s time to give gratitude for those who have passed. It’s time to give thanks for those who still serve. It’s time for peace. It’s November 11th, Remembrance Day. Let us not forget.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them...” - from ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon
We believe that when we stand united in acts of remembrance, we can make a world of difference.
ALL STORES WILL BE CLOSED In keeping with tradition, all Quality Foods stores close each Remembrance Day to pause and reflect on the importance of the role of our service men and women, past and present.

John Rutherford Dalziel May 18, 1948 - October 24, 2016
John loved teaching and worked at Vancouver Island University for 25 years. Shortly after retiring, he sustained a spinal cord injury. For the past seven years he taught us courage and determination. John is survived by his wife Laverne, daughter Katie and brother Robin. A service will be held Saturday, November 5, at 1:30 pm at Evangel Pentecostal Church. Donations in John’s name to Camp Imadene Sponsorship Fund (imadene.com) would be appreciated.
Velma Jean Hay (née Washington) July 22, 1919 - October 22, 2016 It is with great sadness we announce that our mother peacefully passed away of natural causes on October 22, 2016, in her 98th year. Velma was predeceased by her husband Alex in 1979 and is survived by her three children Douglas (Margaret), Andrea and Murray (Marnie), her cherished grandchildren Rachel, Jonathon, Meghan, Simon and Michael and her great-grandchildren Josh, Andrew, Lucy and Henry. Mum was born in Morton Municipality, Manitoba, and raised on the Washington homestead near the small town of Ninga, Manitoba. She was one of six children and is survived by her sister Connie Ranson of Victoria. Mum trained as a nurse at Winnipeg General Hospital and was married in 1942. In 1946, Mum and Dad moved to Powell River, where Dad worked for the Powell River Company (precursor to MacMillan Bloedel Ltd.). They lived there until 1969 when Dad was transferred to Vancouver. During her years in Powell River, our mother was active in her church, enjoyed gardening, family boating, dancing at the "9 to 1 Club," skating at the local rink and raising her children. Mum was a sports fan who enjoyed golfing into her 80s and watching curling on television (a legacy from her Prairie playing days). She had an adventurous spirit and in later years travelled extensively throughout the world. Our mother was a welcome presence in her grandchildren's lives and stayed connected with them throughout her life. Mum was an easygoing, very social and loving person and will be very much missed by family and friends alike. The family would like to thank her caregivers at Amica West Vancouver (Elsie and Maybelle), the nurses and staff at Lynn Valley Care Centre and her personal physician Dr. Kathleen Bell-Irving, all of whom gave her such wonderful care. As per her wishes, a private family celebration will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation.
Linda Diane McLaughlin May 28, 1949 - October 22, 2016
Linda is now at peace after a brief but valiant struggle with brain cancer. She leaves behind her loving husband Dan and daughter Katharine (in Kuwait). Linda was born in Vancouver and graduated from John Oliver Secondary School. She moved to Prince George and continued her studies at College of New Caledonia. She returned to Vancouver and worked at Woodwards, Pacific Western Airlines, Canadian Airlines and Unifiller Systems. Linda met Dan in 1974 and they were on their journey, living and making friends in the Lower Mainland, Cluculz Lake, Mesa, Arizona, and Powell River. Linda had a wonderful outlook on life. She was cheerful, thoughtful and charitable. She enjoyed many crafts and hobbies, golf, gardening, boating (Loafer Five), fishing, whale watching, cooking, entertaining and most sports, especially the Powell River Kings. Linda's favourite bird, the eagle, was her source of strength during her final struggle. A heartfelt thank-you to the nurses and support staff on the sixth floor at Vancouver General Hospital, fourth floor at Powell River General Hospital, Willingdon Creek Village and to Dr. Brad Schweitzer. A celebration of life will be held Friday, November 18, from 12-4 pm at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164 in Powell River. Donations toward a park bench in Linda’s honour would be greatly appreciated.

Albert Silvio Silvestrini Albert Silvio Silvestrini, 68, of Powell River, passed away on Sunday, October 30, at Powell River General Hospital. Born in Floreffe, Belgium, to Erminio and Iolanda Silvestrini, he lived most of his life in Powell River. Albert loved his hometown and always referred to it as “God’s country.” Albert worked for MacMillan Bloedel for more than 30 years, spending the last years of his career with the company in the mill stores. He was passionate about the outdoors. Fishing on Powell Lake was one of his favourite pastimes and he also enjoyed hunting and camping at some of the smaller lakes in the surrounding area. Albert took pride in his woodworking skills and his ability to fix anything, from cars to his grandson’s toys; he would always tell you, no matter what, to “Save the pieces!” Albert was always willing to listen to and help anyone who needed him. Albert is survived by his loving wife of 37 years Sherry (née Whitson), his two daughters Gina (Spencer) and Sara (Russell) and his grandson Ryan. Also left to grieve are his sister Linda and her family, Jennifer (Greg), Maddison and Mercedes, as well as many other family and friends, both here and in Europe. Funeral services for Albert will be held in Powell River on Saturday, November 12, at 1:30 pm at Church of the Assumption. A reception will be held at St. Joseph’s Hall beside the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Powell River Stroke Recovery Club (c/o Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 164, 6811 Alexander Street, Powell River, BC V8A 2A9).

AROUND TOWN
The Haunted Ball 2016 Presented by the Vale Society, the Haunted Ball has become a not-tobe-missed event on Powell River’s social calendar, and a competition to outdo Halloween costumes of the previous year. At the fourth annual ball, held at Dwight Hall in Townsite, hundreds of people showed off their weird and wild imaginations with elaborate costume creations. Some were ghastly, nasty and spooky, while others featured a more hilarious, weird or mystical aspect. DAVID BRINDLE PHOTOS
