Zoning amendment bylaws defeated in Electoral Area B Regional district planning committee considers dwelling configuration for houses in the Nootka Street zoning bylaw area PAUL GALINSKI reporter@prpeak.com

qathet Regional District’s planning committee considered three motions regarding proposed zoning amendment bylaws, but the four-person committee could not come to agreement on any of them.

At the June 23 planning committee meeting, directors discussed a proposed Nootka Street zoning amendment bylaw that would allow for one primary residence and one secondary suite for properties one hectare or smaller on Nootka Street properties, and for properties larger than one hectare, one additional dwelling unit per hectare. Currently, the Nootka Street bylaw allows for one dwelling per parcel, and one additional dwelling for each hectare beyond one hectare.

Electoral Area B director Mark Gisborne said in 1999, the Nootka Street zoning bylaw was brought into effect after a non-binding referendum that passed by one vote.

“It was to regulate the amount of density,” said Gisborne. “It’s one dwelling unit per parcel and one dwelling unit per hectare.

“This assembly has four options.

The first is that we don’t change anything. The second option is what the staff have put in the recommendation for secondary suites only, which have to be part of the dwelling units. The one we previously endorsed, which is called the accessory dwelling unit, is option three. The fourth is total floor area, or floor area ratio.”

Gisborne said he had gone to the Nootka Street area and conducted a non-binding opinion survey. He said he spoke with 22 parcel owners, and based on survey results, nine percent wanted no change, and more than 90 percent were in favour of total floor area and floor area ratio options.

“What has become clear to me is the bylaw should be amended towards the total floor area and floor area ratio option,” said Gisborne.

“Because the bylaw was brought into effect by referendum, if we can get that bylaw sorted out before the next municipal election in October, we can put it before the voters and ask them if they want to keep it the same way or go to a floor area.”

She said right now, the bylaw does not permit secondary suites in dwellings on parcels smaller than one hectare.

Gisborne proposed an alternate motion that the planning committee recommends to the regional board that the board forward the April 8, 2025, endorsed version of Nootka Street zoning amendment bylaw 321.4 to the August 26 board meeting for first and second reading.

Lennox and Gisborne voted in favour of the motion, which dealt with floor area that would be permitted under the bylaw. Brander and McCormick voted against, so the bylaw was tied and defeated.

The meeting then moved on to a Nootka Street zoning bylaw proposed by Gisborne, which was that the planning committee recommend the board endorse Nootka Street zoning amendment bylaw 321.4, 2026, and that the bylaw be forwarded to a future board meet-

ing for first and second reading.

Gisborne said under the amended bylaw, there would be no limit on the number of dwelling units, but the floor area is calculated as the total accumulated floor area of all dwelling units on the parcel.

“If someone wants to have multiple, they have to make sure the dwellings are small enough to fit within that size (600 square metres per hectare).

Brander said the regional district had not received any official requests for this sort of change from residents. He said 600 square metres works out to about 6,500 square feet. He said a mobile home is about 1,000 square feet, so if someone wanted to put six mobile homes on a hectare of land, water consumption would be much greater than a single house of 6,000 square feet.

“The bottom line is I don’t see this being driven by the residents,” said Brander.

When the motion came up for a vote, Gisborne and Lennox supported it, and Brander and McCormick voted against, so the vote was tied and was defeated.

a location where a playground or walking path is located, but what it does mean is that the areas are regulated by our parks bylaw.

Although the current City of Powell River parks bylaw limits the times the public can access parks, they are woefully out of date and need to be amended or replaced.”

Topham said any changes to the parks bylaw need to reflect that the legal landscape has changed considerably since the existing bylaw was enacted in the 1970s. He said most notably, since 2008, there have been decisions from the BC courts pertaining to outdoor sheltering and public spaces.

“BC courts have determined that with the absence of sufficient access to indoor, overnight shelter spaces, a municipality cannot prohibit a person from erecting a shelter on public lands to protect them from the elements without infringing that person’s right to life and security of the person. An outright ban on

overnight sheltering in parks is unconstitutional and unenforceable.”

Councillor Jim Palm said he had walked the encampments before the committee meeting.

“What I saw was certainly not healthy, it was not sanitary, and I did not feel safe walking the trails,” said Palm. “There are two-storey structures with windows. It’s mindboggling what is out there.”

Palm read correspondence from Westview Ratepayers Society that he said highlights what the city is facing. He said homelessness is difficult for city council and staff and the public to deal with.

Councillor Cindy Elliott said one of the reasons she asked for the motion to be postponed on June 16 was that she didn’t believe she had what she needed to make a decision when the motion was first introduced.

“I agree with most that we need a better process for coming up with policies that are not just about what the city does in our jurisdiction, but having a better, integrated plan

that is bigger than just the city,” said Elliott. “We can’t do much without also accepting the offloading of costs that should be covered through a more comprehensive strategy from the province. We have had to struggle a lot to try and get what we need from provincial resources to handle this struggle, not just homelessness, but the opioid crisis.

“We still need to know how best to handle this in a humane, comprehensive way.”

Elliott said she wanted to vote against the motion and then put some thought into a process that provides a more comprehensive look at how good results can be encouraged with the minimum of downloading of costs, while still being humane.

Councillor Rob Southcott said it was clear to him that council was not at a solution.

“With other jurisdictions that have tried to do something, there has been failure,” said Southcott.

“There’s only one thing that I can support in some way where we can

work together as a community. That isn’t addressed here. What we really need to do is to have more dialogue that results in us having a clear understanding of what we can do.’

Councillor Trina Isakson said it is a complex issue and there is no easy solution.

“One decision is not going to be a magic bullet to be a solution,” said Isakson. “There is also a lot of interest in broader input and having meaningful engagement for any decision that does get made.

“I won’t support this motion. I’m not interested in the city increasing its responsibility in managing homelessness and all the costs associated with it. There are people that do that work better. I’m also not interested in approaching this as an enforcement issue.”

Councillor Earl Almeida said the current 50-year-old parks bylaw prohibits overnight use between 11 pm and 6 am. He said, however, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms restricts the community from limiting the freedom of people having a

roof over their heads.

“We can’t stop someone if that’s the only option for shelter,” said Almeida.

Councillor and committee chair George Doubt said he disagreed with allowing shelter in some places and not in others.

“The solution that is proposed isn’t a real solution to the problem that we have,” said Doubt. “It simply proposes to move people from one place to another. People are homeless because of economic and social reasons, and this proposal will not do anything to change that.

“We need to actively involve the community, including the housed people, homeless people, businesses, ratepayers groups, and volunteer organizations. I’m in favour of defeating the motion. I can’t support the resolution the way it is.”

The committee unanimously opposed the motion to prohibit overnight sheltering in certain parks and public spaces and allow it in others, and bring back the bylaw to a future council meeting for review.

Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) will receive correspondence from Canada Energy Regulator regarding Powell River Energy Inc.’s application for a 30-year power export.

At the June 24 qathet Regional District committee of the whole meeting, City of Powell River director Rob Southcott said that both the city and Powerex, a BC Hydro subsidiary, are now intervenors in the hearing.

Electoral Area B director Mark Gisborne said he had a meeting with the AVICC executive on June 23, and one of the advocacy items that came up was power generation for northern Vancouver Island.

“There are some concerns about brown-out and having enough stable power,” said Gisborne. “I’m wondering if we should forward correspondence from the Canada Energy Regulator to the AVICC executive,” said Gisborne. “They are

not planning to be an intervenor because the deadline has passed, but it might be something they wish to be advocating because there is a subsea cable between us and Courtenay. I move we forward the correspondence to the AVICC.” Gisborne said he could forward it himself, but the qRD has intervenor status, and that might carry more weight.

Electoral Area D director and committee chair Sandy McCormick said the matter is on a public agenda. She said Gisborne could forward the correspondence, so staff time would not have to be used.

Gisborne said he could forward it, but if it has the backing of the board, it elevates the correspondence.

Southcott said he would be happy if, by unanimous consent, the committee directed Gisborne to send the correspondence as a matter of interest to AVICC. Gisborne will send the correspondence himself.

qathet Region District board will consider recommending changes to BC Transit routes to accommodate ridership in Electoral Area B. At the June 24 committee of the whole meeting, directors considered a motion that the committee recommend that the regional board identify the gap in scheduled service between public transit route 12 and route one along the Sunshine Coast Highway between Caribou Avenue and Maris Road as a priority for qathet Regional District paratransit service, and that a request be submitted to BC Transit to integrate this service gap into the next annual BC Transit improvement program.

Electoral Area B director Mark Gisborne said the area outlined in the motion is an area outlined for development.

“There is quite a bit of in-

dustry and business and residential development along the waterfront and it is underserved,” said Gisborne.

“I’m wondering how to get service to those areas?

“If this is endorsed, it will be considered for the upcoming transit plan. We will find out the costs and implications as the report goes through those operational plans.”

Electoral Area E director Andrew Fall said he had no doubt about the gap in service identified. He asked if the regional board had a way of tracking where public priorities were coming from, so there is a structured way to justify these requests.

General manager of operational services Patrick Devereaux said BC Transit just did a service review on the Powell River transit system, which included the regional district’s paratransit system. He said the area outlined by Gisborne, while identified, was not seen as a priority through the service review.

“The main level of service requested on route 12 was actually the Thursday service, which was included in proposed expansion for this May, which the provincial government did not fund,” said Devereaux. “That is the process. Service reviews identify how and when and

identify all the groups that have input.”

Electoral Area D director and committee chair Sandy McCormick said Texada Island this year got its second day of bus service. She said Texada, through BC Transit, had been advocating for the second day of service for nine years. She said it has been brought up every year, only to have it turned down by government because of other priorities.

“This year was our turn,” said McCormick. “We’re very grateful, it is being well used, and we appreciate what BC Transit has done. I’m just saying to director Gisborne if we pass this motion, it could still be in that never-never land of when government is going to approve it.”

City of Powell River director Cindy Elliott said she wanted to move an amendment to strike out route one from the recommendation.

She said she supports the motion for trying to get transit for the area but does not support using the city’s route one to do it. The amendment, however, failed.

Fall made an amendment to remove references to route 12 and route one.

Nichole Strickland, another speaker, said she was at the protest because she believes that many people in the community are frustrated, disappointed, and feeling like their voices have not been heard.

“This is not about lacking compassion,” said Strickland. “Every person deserves dignity, support and the opportunity to rebuild their life. But compassion also means creating solutions that actually help people, not simply relocating a very complex issue into one of our community parks.”

Strickland said parks belong to everyone, and that these spaces are some of the few places that truly belong to every member of the community.

“I ask council to pause this decision and provide the public with clear answers,” said Strickland.

“This community deserves a thoughtful, long-term solution, not decisions that create more unanswered questions.”

Political lifeline

After months of stumbles and mistakes, B.C. Premier David Eby finally caught a break last week and it came courtesy of Prime Minister Mark Carney.

And boy oh boy, it was a big one.

The PM plunked $20 billion into the Eby government’s lap, and it could not have come at a better time for the premier, as his approval rating continues to slide.

The federal government is

dishing out billions of dollars for things like mines, energy projects, transportation projects, housing, childcare, skills training and ports.

Of course, details of exactly how this money will be spent and over what period of years are rather sparse, but you can’t blame Eby for taking the “hey, what’s not to like?” approach.

federal government to keep the ban on tanker traffic on B.C.’s northwest coast intact with absolutely no modifications.

By agreeing that B.C. has no constitutional authority over an oil pipeline, the B.C. premier paved the way for a new pipeline to be built, but one that will follow a southern route that already exists.

The NDP government signaled some time ago that it was okay with another

southern pipeline. After all, it has gone from opposing the existing TMX pipeline to now supporting increasing its capacity, so learning to live with yet another pipeline along the same route will not be difficult.

This all presents a major victory for Eby and is probably the best news his government has received since narrowly eking out an election win in 2024.

It also allows him to patch

up relations with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, now that she appears to have achieved her top goal of having another oil pipeline take crude oil out of her province to market.

Another advantage for Eby was how Carney’s big announcement exposed how his chief political opponent – the B.C. Conservative Party – is the party that is now the one that seem to be stumbling around.

North Island – Powell River MP Aaron Gunn has a new role in the federal Conservative official opposition.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilivre has appointed Gunn as the shadow minister for ethics and accountable government.

“It’s a very exciting opportunity,” said Gunn. “I know it is going to be a lot of hard work. It’s a very important role of any opposition to hold the government accountable when it comes to issues surrounding ethics and accountable government.

“To be given that portfolio is a lot of responsibility. I’m ready to stand up for the people of this riding and the people of this country.”

Gunn previously worked to hold government accountable through his work with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and as an independent filmmaker. Some of his video presentations and investigations included the SNCLavalin affair, the We Charity scandal and the failed safe supply experiment, said Gunn.

“I’m very used to holding powerful politicians accountable in my previous role as a documentary filmmaker,” said

Gunn said Canada has a prime minister who has more conflicts of interest than any prime minister in Canada’s history; none more so than with Brookfield Renewables, which is trying to get an export permit approved by the federal cabinet to send Canadian hydroelectricity out of Powell River to the United States in the middle of a trade war, he added.

According to a media release, over the past year, Gunn has been busy scrutinizing the government’s potential conflicts of interest stemming from Mark Carney's former role as a Brookfield executive. Gunn stated the 30-year permit would benefit Brookfield shareholders, rather than ordinary hardworking Canadians.

City of Powell River Council has approved the 2025 annual statement of financial information (SOFI) for submission to the provincial ministry of housing and municipal affairs.

At the June 18 council meeting, senior manager of financial services Ryan Youngman said approval was being sought for the statement.

“The Financial Information Act requires every municipality in BC to submit a statement of financial information, which is commonly known as the SOFI report, to the ministry of housing and municipal affairs by June 30 of each year,” said Youngman. “Council and the chief financial officer must approve the SOFI report before it is submitted.

“The SOFI report contains information such as the schedule of remuneration and expenses, which lists all of council’s remuneration and expenses, as well as employees earning more than $75,000 per year. The employee expenses include items such as training and professional dues.”

Youngman said another schedule is the schedule of suppliers and business services, which lists suppliers that have been paid more than $25,000 during the year. There are also the 2025 audited, consolidated finan-

cial statements, which council has previously approved, he added.

“It’s worth noting that the financial statements are different in presentation than the SOFI report,” said Youngman. “The financial statements are presented in accordance with public sector accounting standards.

There are some differences in the report.”

The SOFI report was unanimously approved for submission to the ministry of housing and municipal affairs, and that the mayor and chief financial officer be authorized to sign the SOFI approval form. There was no council discussion during adoption.

According to the SOFI report, remuneration for the mayor and city council in 2025 was $251,400, with councillors and the mayor having $41,567 in expenses.

Employees earning more than $75,000 in 2025 had $11,736,666 in remuneration and $196,393 in expenses. Employees earning less than $75,000 had remuneration of $6,607,571, with expenses of $106,875.

Total remuneration for all employees was $18,344,237, with expenses of $303,268.

The total, including employees and elected officials, was remuneration of $18,595,637, with expenses of $344,835.

In terms of the total aggregate amount paid to suppliers exceeding $25,000, the figure was $23,940,339. The consolidated total of payers of $25,000 or less paid to suppliers was $2,480,905.

The total for all suppliers was $26,421,244.

In terms of projects around the city, there was $1,022,970 expended in the pavement management.

there is $33,182,901 in total reserve funds and $52,100,753 in total reserve accounts and reserve funds.

Water expenses were $2,285,375 and sewer expenses were $6,955,323, for a total of $9,240,698 in sewer and water expenses.

Total protective services expenditures in the city amounted to $9,420,225, including $4,711,251 for Powell River Fire Rescue, $4,361,759 for Powell River RCMP, and $347,245 for bylaw enforcement and animal control.

Revenue generated from Powell River recreation, parks and cultural services amounted to $2,482,705, with expenses of $7,401,767, resulting in a taxpayer subsidy of $4,919,062.

Total transportation services amounted to $7,667,127, including public works administration, roads and street maintenance, and operational services, including public transit, Powell River Airport and the harbours.

The city has $321,308,474 in tangible capital assets, including land, buildings and building services, roads, sidewalks and curbs, water and sewer infrastructure, plus marine and airport infrastructure.

In terms of long-term debt, in the general fund,

there is $4,012,746 owing on the north boat harbour, $2,797,020 owing on Powell River Public Library, and $24,232,147 for the consolidated wastewater treatment plant, for total long-term debt of $31,861,897.

Legal actions have also been recorded in the SOFI report.

On April 2, 2024, Graham Infrastructure LP and Graham Infrastructure Ltd. initiated litigation against the city and others, claiming delays and direct costs under its contracts with the city for the construction of the consolidated wastewater treatment plant, totalling more than $38 million, according to the SOFI report.

On May 6, 2024, Associated Engineering (BC) Ltd. initiated litigation against the city, claiming alleged unpaid fees for consulting services during the construction of the wastewater treatment plant.

The claim is for just over $1 million.

Taxation for 2025 included $26,816,625 in property value taxes, $1,407,232 in sewer treatment frontage parcel taxes, $1,207,526 in sewer collection frontage parcel taxes, $303,900 in flat taxes, $220,134 in utility taxes, and $210,782 in payments in lieu of taxes, for a total of $30,166,199.

Local golfers invited to participate in tournament PGA qualifier takes place at Myrtle Point Golf Club

that they have wanted to play but never had the chance, all in an attempt to progress through the stages to the extravagant PGA Scramble National Final.

According to a recent media release, the winners of each local qualifier are invited to participate in one of 13 regional finals later this summer.

From there, regional final winners will be awarded the chance to participate and win a national championship at the prestigious Cabot Links Golf Course in Nova Scotia in the fall. There will also be two guaranteed spots at the national final for all-female teams.

The competition is open to teams of four eligible amateur golfers who all have an up-to-date Golf Canada handicap and are 19 years of age and older.

New summer chamber music festival launched Concert at arts hub features violinist Madeline Hocking TANYA HILL community@prpeak.com

Multi-instrumentalists and singers Simon Gidora and Isabella Perron, are launching a yearly, summer classical music festival called Pacific Resonance, featuring musicians from across Canada and abroad.

Gidora, who teaches at qathet Academy of Music and Arts, said the idea is to bring the best in musical performance to the communities of the Sunshine Coast.

“The festival culminates in two performances, in Sechelt at the Rockwood Pavilion and in qathet at the Arts Hub,” Gidora told the Peak.

“One of our artists, Madeline Hocking, is a qathet-born

and raised violinist who grew up highly involved in the Powell River arts and music scene.”

Perron, Gidora’s fiancé and performance partner, was just featured as concertmaster of the PRISMA festival orchestra and is this year’s concerto competition winner.

“Powell River has a very active strings [instrument] environment, as we do on the lower Sunshine Coast,” said Gidora. “We settled back on the lower coast [Madeira Park ] two years ago, partly for family, partly because the city [Toronto] wore us out and we missed our hometown vibes.”

He reconnected with Hawking after seeing her walking down in Roberts Creek, where her mom lives.

Hawking currently lives in New York City, but is spending time on the Sunshine Coast to perform in the festival and visit family.

“I thought it would be really nice to be performing here on the coast, which we’ve been doing as a duo, but also to bring the very talented people we have met over the years to our home,” said Gidora. “We spent all these years in music education across North America, meeting all these wonderful young musicians, so it’s been a dream for me, for many years, to do an artist-run performing arts festival.”

Gidora and Perron formed the group Duo Mycelia a few years ago, creating original music rooted in their classical training while also drawing inspiration from jazz, folk, and minimalism.

“Our place in Madera Park is immersed in the natural environment; we talk a lot about how artists of the classical world, but of all worlds, really draw from nature and go to nature for inspiration,” said Gidora. “You hear of these composers going to

their country homes for long stretches of time to write these master works, and I think it’s the same thing.”

He said there are classical music artistic residencies all over the world, and in places such as Parry Sound in Ontario, or in Nova Scotia.

“Same thing on the west coast, people come here, and they feel very inspired, artistically and humanistically, they feel very connected to something bigger,” emphasized Gidora. “The performances will be conversational classical music with four or five musicians at a time; you’re going to have a Beethoven quartet, a Brahms quintet, for example.”

Along with Gidora, Perron and Hawking, musicians Tilman Sandvoss and Daniel Hamin-Go will also take the stage.

Gidora said he wants to encourage young people to attend the festival and is of-

Marine upholstery and canvas work is not something most people think about until a tear appears, a window clouds over or a boat top finally gives up after years in the weather. At Two Wheel Tech Upholstery, that work has become a growing part of the business, offering Powell River customers a local option for repairs, custom replacements and restoration projects.

Operating as a department of Two Wheel Tech, the upholstery side of the business focuses primarily on marine work, including boat seats, canvas tops, side curtains and the framing that supports them. The shop also handles some vehicle seat repairs, giving customers another local option when wear and tear starts to show.

The business builds on decades of experience in the trade. Gord, who started in upholstery work roughly 50 years ago, has spent years refining his craft, from auto interiors to custom marine canvas. Today, that knowledge is being passed on to Emily, who joined the business after hearing Gord was looking for an apprentice and deciding to make the call.

“I cold called, came in for an interview and we decided to go for it,” says Emily. “I’m taking over and learning as much as I can before Gord retires.”

That transition is helping ensure the business can continue serving local customers while keeping a specialized skill set in the community. Emily says one of the things she enjoys most is the

variety of the work and the people who come through the shop.

“It’s been really great working with the boat community,” she says. “One seat is never the same as the next. You really have to make it custom and make it just right.”

While the shop’s focus is marine upholstery, customers do not always need a complete replacement. Some come in looking to repair a rip in a driver’s seat.

That flexibility allows the team to tailor projects to both the condition of the piece and the customer’s budget.

Two Wheel Tech Upholstery uses top-quality materials sourced through Ennis Fabrics, with options including vinyl, Sunbrella and Top Gun depending on the application. For customers,

that means access to durable materials designed to stand up to the weather, while still offering a wide range of colours and finishes.

One recent project that stands out involved a Double Eagle boat that needed a new custom top with improved headroom. The job included new framing and a full custom pattern in a heavier Top Gun material, all while keeping the finish smooth and wrinkle-free.

Growers believe in strengthening food systems Mushroom cultivator wants to have yearround production TANYA HILL community@prpeak.com

A mushroom is the fruiting body of a fungus. There are thousands of species of fungi in the world, but only a few are edible, and even fewer are grown commercially.

White and brown button mushrooms; cremini, portabella and sometimes shitaki mushrooms can be found on most grocery store shelves these days, and are more than likely grown in BC. qathet residents Anthony Dunstan and Zoe Pelton decided to give small-scale mushroom farming a try, launching Mycap Mushroom Co. earlier this year.

"A few years ago I bought one of those grow-at-home kits and I was really fascinated because I started learning more and more about

growing and expanding edible mushroom production," Dunstan told the Peak. "We're actually growing in a shipping container we bought last year."

Both Dunstan and Pelton are trained electricians, and have worked in the field for years, but decided they wanted a change in lifestyle.

"It just wasn't fitting for what we wanted in our life anymore," explained Dunstan.

They purchased three shipping containers but only built one to cultivate mushrooms.

"We were planning to expand into the other two but now we're actually thinking we need a larger building, so we're considering something a little bit more substantial on our property south of town," said Dunstan.

They are currently cultivating lion's mane and a few varieties of oyster mushrooms, and hope to eventually have year-round production.

"We might get into shiitake at some point, but right now we're limited in space," explained

Dunstan. "The community has welcomed us very warmly and everybody has been really excited to have local mushrooms ready to go."

The couple have a table at Powell River Farmers' Market (PRFM) and a few local and small businesses around town have their mushrooms on the shelves.

"This fits with our values pretty well; we strongly believe in knowing where your food comes from and being familiar with the [farming] community," said Dunstan. "Being able to provide something that we're proud of is also important."

He said eventually they would like to be certified as organic growers, but that takes time.

"We want to provide healthy food for our local community and we want to build a good connection, which is one of our bigger values, to be part of the bigger community," said Dunstan.

Both lion's mane mushrooms and oyster mushrooms are packed with vitamins and nutrients, and many folks use them as a meat substitute.

"We like cooking lion's mane in a variety of different ways because it's so versatile and has a meaty texture," said Dunstan. "It can be used kind of like pulling pork by shredding it."

He said lion's mane can also be marinated like a steak and seared

on the grill.

"With the blue oysters we've actually started making our own mushroom jerky that we have shared with friends and family, who love it," he added.

Business and residents step up to support pickleballers Association continues search for interim indoor location and long-term permanent home TANYA HILL community@prpeak.com

qathet Pickleball Association (qPA) continues to receive community support from local businesses and residents who want to see the sport grow in the region. qPA director-at-large Jill Joslin said pickleball is gaining momentum across the

region, and with that growth comes a steady wave of community support helping to push the sport forward.

"One recent example came from a local fundraiser organized by Modern Windows," Joslin told the Peak.

"Through a garage sale event that took place on June 13, the business donated $2,255 to the qPA." Joslin believes this recent donation reflects something more meaningful: local businesses and residents stepping up in practical, handson ways to support a sport that has quickly become part of the community fabric.

"The funds contribute to the pickleball association's broader fundraising effort,

which currently sits at just over $60,000," said Joslin.

"The association has set an ambitious goal of reaching $100,000 by the end of the year, money that will help move plans forward for both interim and permanent facilities."

The group's biggest challenge right now is finding that space, she added.

"Outdoor courts remain busy, and weather continues to limit consistent play for much of the year," explained Joslin. "As a result, qPA is actively searching for both an interim indoor location and a long-term, permanent home where the sport can continue to grow."

The search is ongoing, and

the association is hoping the community can once again play a role.

"Anyone who knows of available land, or property owners open to leasing space, is encouraged to reach out," said Joslin. "Even temporary options could make a meaningful difference in the short term."

Beyond the numbers and logistics, what stands out, according to Joslin, is how pickleball has brought people together.

"Players of all ages are showing up, learning the game and forming connections that extend well beyond the court," she added. "The push for a dedicated facility is about keeping that momentum go-

josh statham Under current regulations angler’s are experiencing new bycatch. Fishing continues to be light’s out, but trolling deep for Chinook or jigging for Ling Cod can lead to accidental Yellow Eye catches. Remember to carry a descending device, they are mandatory.

Very simple descenders can keep you legal, but devices like the SeaQualizer will do a better job returning Yellow Eye to their habitat. It sounds strange but Chinook hooked accidentally while targeting Coho in shallow water is another new form of bycatch in our waters. Consider gaff release tactics for Chinook while they’re closed.

On the topic of salmon mortality, there’s been a lot of talk about hook size restrictions. It’s sounding increasingly likely that salmon fishing lure hook sizes will have a maximum as soon as next season. Recent studies have shown that the longer shank of larger hooks leads to higher mortality among released fish due to the ability of the larger hook to damage the fish’s eye or snag in their gills and throat, leading to fatal blood loss.

Bigger hooks may not be beneficial to anglers as they can allow a fish to pivot and become unhooked if there is slack in the line.

Chinook retention is open in Jervis and Toba Inlets, and reports continue to be positive for those going further afield to harvest salmonids.

Hatchery and Wild Chinook are both open, but there is a slot size for Wild Chinook.

In local waters clipped Coho (hatchery, adipose fin removed) are plentiful, and already a decent size. While Coho are caught at all depths, if you’re trying to avoid Chinook try shallower waters, even buck tailing on the surface.

I’ve heard multiple reports from canoe and kayak fishermen recently. It reminds me how lucky we are here to have incredible accessability for fishing.

You don’t need a huge boat, or even a motor at all, to enjoy fishing in the Salish Sea. SUP, kayak, canoe or shore have produced salmon along with rockfish, soul, ling cod and kelp greenling.

There are so many species to target, and harvest; there’s never been a better time to fish.

Former Tilberg family farm now a folk school and farm The 11-acre property is home to sheep, chickens, and tradition of Danish folk education TANYA HILL community@prpeak.com

Midwives Kayley Redgers and Aly Jones always dreamed of getting out of the big city to live and work on a farm and homestead, and last December, that dream came true, opening Solsken Folk School and Farm in Wildwood.

Formerly [Solsken Farmstead], owned and operated by Canadian supermodel and sustainability activist Tasha Tilberg and her family, the 11-acre farm boasts sheep, chickens, grape vines and a pasture.

Redgers and Jones said they started to host workshops at the farm grounded in the tradition of Danish folk education: learning rooted in everyday life, shared skills, and collective responsibility.

"Folk schools emerged from people wanting to learn more hands-on, practical learning outside the traditional classroom," Jones told the Peak. "It was started in the 19th century in Denmark as a response to education that separated knowledge from everyday life and confined it to formal institutions."

Both Redgers and Jones have some Danish and Swedish family heritage, and

so kept the name Solsken, but they said the workshops they host are not necessarily tied to Danish heritage, but more about place-based learning and living in a more collective way.

"The idea is to host workshops like basket weaving or sourdough bread making, or, we have a woman who's going to come and do a handtool building course," said Jones. "We have sheep, and so hosted a wool processing workshop."

The next two workshops include one called, Milklab: a five-day introduction to natural cheesemaking with David Asher in August. Then, in September, fibre artist Vanessa Sparrow will teach the ancient art of wet-felting with wool to create your own sauna hat.

"I think learning these types of skills is important because we have kind of forgotten how to use our hands," said Jones." I think we've gone away from learning how to fix things and how to make things."

Jones said they welcome people to suggest ideas for workshops.

"One person who reached out to us wanted to do the workshop on building; she's going to teach how to build a toolbox," said Jones. "But she's going to teach you how to build a toolbox with your hands, not using power tools."

Another goal the couple has is building a farming community and collective.

For example, Jones said they started what they call a potato co-op; currently host two cows in their pasture, and they have a vineyard to

manage, and a farm store.

"A friend of ours, named Scott, keeps his bees here, which is really lovely," said Jones. "We have few neighbours from our old community in Townsite that have backyards and love growing food, but didn't have enough room to grow potatoes, so we talked about starting a potato co-op, and we actually just received grant money for it."

So far they have planted 400 potato plants and community members who want to grow potatoes share in the cost of taking care of the land and the potatoes.

"We spent some time here last summer, and really fell in love with this place; I think both of us very much have felt like this is what we've been looking for, for over a decade," said Redgers.

"It just really feels like home, and the previous

owner, Tasha, planted so many beautiful things; she built a really beautiful foundation for us to walk into.

We start the day with farm chores, like letting out all the animals, feeding them, and then there's tons of work in terms of growing food, plus we are both working midwives."

Behind the couple's homestead is a little house where Redger's childhood best friend lives (who is also the cheese maker), and who has knowledge about running market gardens and helps out with garden work.

"We all work together in the garden, which is so nice," said Redgers. "We are growing a ton of garlic, onions, greens, radishes, and turnips, blueberries, tons of herbs, tomatoes, and some citrus."

School district superintendent reflects on first year Listening, learning, and commitment to student success a priority

"This year has reinforced something equally important; if we truly want to understand learning in our district, we need to continue to spend time listening to and observing the lived experiences of our students," said McKenzie. "We need to see it in action; we need to listen to what it tells us."

He said his priorities, along with his team going forward, are to implement subtle changes in the district using evidence-based data, in order to push forward student success, understand their needs, engage with the community, and learn about its strengths.

"I'm building relationships in every place possible; working closely with the Tla'min Nation, and I think that's sort of the precept that I've operated under," said McKenzie. "I'm looking at, [with our team] our systems, our processes, and student outcomes; how we support our learners, and the ways we use our resources, just really trying to take a responsible role in how we keep students at the centre of our work."

Recently, McKenzie had the opportunity to sit with and listen to students at Brooks Secondary School.

"What they told me is not surprising," he said. "They talked to me about wanting a sense of belonging in their

One year has passed since Paul McKenzie stepped into the role as qathet School District's (qSD) superintendent of schools.

He told the Peak, he would characterize this past school year as one of listening, learning, and a commitment to student success.

"To understand a community, to understand our schools, to understand our staff and the needs of our students, you need to listen and try to learn," said McKenzie. "I've spent a considerable amount of time in our schools and in some of our classrooms meeting with students, trying to attend events in communities; really to get a feel for the place, which I have come to adore so much."

He said in education, school districts often rely on reports, data, and indicators of success to help understand student success, and these tools certainly matter, but are not the only indicators of the health and wellbe-

school; that they value the relationships that they have with their peers is such a critical piece; feeling known, seen, and included in their school."

He said that many students at Brooks are deeply interested in meaningful learning that ties their skills and their acquisition of knowledge to real world application and the opportunity to develop their own confidence and growth.

"I think all change starts with developing clear processes by which we thoughtfully resource our schools to support meeting students where they are," said McKenzie. "We also have the important work of ensuring that our students come every day feeling welcomed, engaged, inspired, and challenged."

In 2024, qSD officially launched to the public the 2023-2028 strategic plan; developed in partnership with Tla’amin Nation, parents, staff and teachers, community members and students.

"Think of the strategic plan as sort of our directional map, the terrain of how we move through the work of our operational plans and setting goals inside that," said McKenzie. "If you see some of our school reports this year, you'll see an increased emphasis on us be-

ing curious about our learners; interested in how they're performing, and looking at our practices to see how we can be even more impactful."

The qSD strategic plan is built around six strategic priorities including: Focus on enhancing early learning; supporting place-based outdoor education; prioritizing mental health; focus on closing equity gaps for Indigenous learners; driving climate action, facility upgrades, and sustainability; aligning operations with truth and reconciliation calls to action, and focusing on ʔayʔaǰuθəm language revitalization and addressing colonial legacies.

"I am so proud of the staff and the support staff in this district for the incredible amount of work they do every day," said McKenzie.

"How do we access voices in our district to help us get closer to the story that we're trying to tell?"

He said one of the main goals is to understand how best to adapt the school district to be closer to what schools, students, and staff need.

"The journey to that stage [graduation] starts in kindergarten, right, and what we do the moment that they start with us,” said McKenzie.

“That means hundreds of people along the way are going to have a singular invest-

"We have just over 50 competitors attending this year from all over BC and some out-of-country visitors," said Silvester. "Visitors can expect much more than just the carving and logger sports competition; on Saturday and Sunday, Willingdon Beach will come alive with food, artisan, and information booths for the community to enjoy."

There will also be a beer garden, offering cool beverages while enjoying the show, Silvester said.

Silvester said she hopes that people attending the events can either donate cash or goods as an entry fee

for the Powell River Action Centre Food Bank.

The only thing different that people may notice at this year's event are the poles at the memorial bowl amphitheater.

"Unfortunately the poles were at the end of their life," explained Silvester. " We are hoping they [replacement poles] will be completed prior to next year's event; safety is always our number one priority."

Competitors from all over BC and around the world will be spring-boarding and axe-throwing their way to victory at this year's Powell River Logger Sports weekend, taking place at the Loggers Memorial Bowl in Powell River on Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Local champion competitors include: Rosalea Pagani, Tyler Brady, Julian Welp, Michelle Silvester, Verjall Ham, Danielle Ceulen, Willy Mowat, and Brenda Mowat.

The Peak caught up with longtime competitor Pagani.

"I am looking forward to this year's event, catching up with all my logger sports friends and competing in the axe throw," said Pagani. "I will also be competing in stock saw and the Jack and Jill double buck. " Although Pagani is busy working in the forest industry as a practices forester for BC Timber Sales and is currently on maternity leave with her second child, she said, she still makes time to compete in logger sports.

"What keeps me coming back to the logger sports events is the fun atmosphere and all the friendly competitors," said Pagani.

"We always have such a great time, and I enjoy bringing my kids to learn about the forest industry and building the next generation of logger sports

The countdown is on for this weekend's Logger Sports event, with competitors, chainsaw carvers and volunteers preparing to welcome spectators for one of Powell River's signature summer traditions.

Logger sports competition gets underway on Saturday morning with preliminary events, leading into the official opening ceremonies at noon. Throughout the weekend, competitors will test their skill, speed and strength in a variety of traditional logging events that continue to draw crowds year after year.

At a recent volunteer meeting, organizers also unveiled this year's official event design, once again created by longtime designer Sam Richards. Richards has designed the event artwork for many years, and this year's design will be featured on a new selection

of hats, hoodies and stickers available throughout the weekend.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to support the event through a silent auction featuring a variety of prizes, including airplane tickets and a full logging truck load of firewood. Silent auction items will be displayed near the merchandise area.

Admission to the event will once again support the local food bank. Volunteers will be stationed at the gates accepting donations, with organizers encouraging monetary donations whenever possible, as they allow the food bank to purchase food more efficiently and stretch every dollar further.

Chainsaw carvers have already begun arriving in the community, with all competitors expected to be on site by Tuesday evening.

Throughout the weekend,

visitors can watch the artists transform logs into works of art while also browsing carvings and other handcrafted pieces available for purchase.

The carving competition concludes at noon on Sunday. Following a short break, organizers will hold an auction featuring a donated carving from each participating artist, with proceeds helping fund next year's carving competition.

The winner of this year's carving competition will also be announced Sunday afternoon.

With top logger sports competition, chainsaw carving, new merchandise, community fundraising and plenty of family-friendly entertainment, organizers are looking forward to another memorable weekend celebrating forestry, craftsmanship and community spirit.

Logger Sports is back Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12, at Loggers Memorial Bowl at Willingdon Beach.

However, the carving competition started in the early morning on Wednesday, July 8, at the upper Willingdon waterfront and continues through the weekend.

Carving competition organizer Laura Passek said she is excited to have 12 carvers signed up for the 2026 event.

"This event has gone worldwide; people have heard about it," said Passek. "The carving competition [in Powell River] is now the second largest in Canada."

Both the logger sports weekend and carving competition were relaunched more than a decade ago by Passek and former logger sports world champion and Powell River Logger Sports president Bob Marquis.

"The carvers are in the competitors’ circuit," said Passek. “I'm excited to have Benji

Waretini-Hemara from North Vancouver back at this year's competition."

Last year, Waretini-Hemara placed third (people's choice) with his carving called, lioness with baby deer.

This year's competitors also include local carver Clint Bleaney. Carver Jay Perrin is also from qathet but will not compete this year.

He will serve as a judge.

Thichum Forest Products, Powell River Forest Products and qʷoqʷənəs Sort and Supply are providing the cedar and scaling machine.

"Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are the biggest days, when the carvers take off big pieces [of wood], " said Passek. "I have such a great group of carvers; they keep me going."

The first-place winner of the carving competition receives $5,000, second place $3,000 and third place $2,000.

Every year, thousands of visitors stop by to view the carving competition, and some specifically make the trip for the event.

"That's what I like, the smiles on people's faces, and what [the carving event] brings to this town," said Passek.

Wayne (Robert) Langdale July 31, 1941- June 21, 2026

Born and raised in Powell River for the first 20 years of his life, Wayne longed for adventure and began traveling in 1961, ending up in New Zealand.

He met his first wife and had a son, Chris (Mariko) then remarried to Barb and was married for 53 years to her. Together they had a daughter, Cheryl and then they all moved back to Canada in 1989.

Wayne worked for 27 years in the New Zealand Fire Service then when coming back to Powell River he became the Fire Chief for the next nine years, retiring in 1998.

Wayne enjoyed many things including gardening, fishing, golfing and travelling on many cruises with Barb and holidays with his family, between New Zealand and Canada. He also loved hockey, both on television and going to local Kings games.

Wayne’s greatest joy was his grandchildren, which include Chloe, Kian, Cade and Tenielle and, also a great grandson Charlie...from Powell River to Vancouver and all the way to Australia.

Although his health had declined over the last few years, Wayne had a great memory and would remind you if something was not correct or who was involved.

Wayne resided at Willingdon Creek Village for almost the last three years, where several staff and residents became close to him.

He will be greatly missed by friends, past co-workers and especially his family and his children; grandchildren, great grandson and, a brother Ron in Smithers; his wife Barb.

Rest easy Dad, you are no longer in pain but only at peace.

Kent Franklin Trotter May 29, 1950- May 31, 2026

Born May 29, 1950, on the Tahltan Reserve in Telegraph Creek, BC. He was then adopted at two-weeksold by Franklin and Lilyan Trotter of Powell River.

He was raised in Townsite by his loving parents and grew up to work for the pulp and paper mill in Powell River for many years.

He was known to be a very intelligent and kind man with a passion for electronics. He was cherished and loved by his family who miss him dearly.

Kent passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026, at 0830h surrounded by Jacalin and her sons.

Kent is survived by his son Darren James Bertram Trotter, aka Hurford; daughter-in-law Jacalin Crosfield; grandson Blake Anthony Coe; and great-grandson Jacob Prud Homme.

Kent considered Blake’s siblings to be his own grandchildren.

He also had two granddaughters.

To say the past year has been a success for Mike Kaban would be an understatement.

Over the last 12 months, the lifelong Powell River resident has continued to build momentum as one of the community’s most recognized and trusted realtors, earning some top Realtor honours at RE/MAX while helping families navigate one of life’s biggest decisions with honesty, reliability and care.

For Mike, success has never been measured solely by numbers. It has always been about people.

Alongside his wife Kyrie and their son Luke, Mike has continued to make community involvement a priority both in and outside of real estate. From donating his truck and personal time to numerous local organizations and events, to giving away hundreds of tree seedlings every year for Earth Day, to Christmas turkeys or hams to all his clients, Mike says giving makes us feel good.

Mike is also a proud member of the Rotary Club of Powell River, where he actively helps lead and support community-building projects throughout the region.

“I truly enjoy helping people, whether that’s buying a home, moving furniture, volunteering my truck, or helping out at an event,” says Mike.

His commitment to making a difference has also inspired one of his newest community initiatives.

Drawing on his experience as the former Parks Supervisor for the City of Powell River, Mike launched the Borrow a Boat program to make the region’s lakes more accessible to everyone.

“Working in parks, I saw firsthand how spending time in nature can transform lives and improve mental health,” he says. “With the rising cost of living, I wanted to create a barrier-free way for people to enjoy our beautiful outdoors.”

The initiative currently features six bright yellow canoes placed at popular lakes throughout the region, including three close to the city and three at well-loved backcountry destinations. Residents are encouraged to use the boats wherever they see them, simply flip them over and leave them ready for the next person to enjoy.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and Mike hopes to expand the program even further.

“If someone has an old boat they’re no longer using, I’m always looking to buy more, fix them up and get them back out on the water for everyone to enjoy,” he says.

Deep roots in Powell River continue to shape Mike’s approach to both business and life. His family’s history in the community dates back to the 1930s, giving him a strong understanding of the people, neighbourhoods and values that make Powell River unique.

Before entering real estate, Mike spent years building a reputation for hard work and leadership throughout the community.

After graduating from BCIT as an equipment mechanic, he spent a decade in the local logging industry before launching his own business. He later dedicated 18 years to the City of Powell River, eventually becoming Supervisor of the Parks department.

Those experiences built the unique foundation that the realtor clients appreciate today: approachable, dependable and always willing to help.

“When you call or text me, you’re getting me directly,” says Mike. “Real estate can be stressful and emotional at times, so being available and building trust and confidentiality really matters.”

That philosophy continues to resonate with clients across the community.

His now well-known moving truck continues to be another extension of his customer-first approach.

Available free of charge for clients to use, the truck has also supported numerous local sports teams, non-profit groups and community organizations throughout the year. “Like any relationship worth having, you need honesty, trust and the desire to help,” says Mike. “That applies to real estate and life in general.”

As his business continues to grow, Mike says staying grounded in the community remains the most important part of it all.

“One of the best parts of this job is being able to give back to the community that has given so much to us,” he says. “At the end of the day, this is home. I’m grateful for the trust people place in me, and I’m excited to continue helping this community however I can.”
