In August, the Patricia Theatre will be getting a 24-kilowatt solar energy system installed on its roof. The system is being designed and installed by Vancouver Renewable

Energy Co-operative (VREC Solar), a worker cooperative, as part of a community-owned energy project called SolShare. “The installation has no cost to the film society,” said qathet Film Society (qFS) executive director Gary Shilling. “We provide the roof and they supply the equipment. There is a small savings in our electrical bill, but the primary motivation was a belief in solar as the best way forward to expand electrical capacity in the world.” Shilling said it was environmental advocate and Cinema Politca qathet member Charlie

Latimer who spearheaded the project. “Charlie has a relationship with the film society and the Patricia as a member of Cinema Politica; they present a politically relevant film every month at the theatre,” added Shilling. “He advocated for SolShare and more specifically VREC Solar, the installer of the equipment.” Shilling explained that the solar panels are factored against the theatre’s electrical usage, so they don’t actually power anything in the theatre, but feed back into the system. “The theatre actually has three [power] me-
