In August, the Patricia Theatre will be getting a 24-kilowatt solar energy system installed on its roof. The system is being designed and installed by Vancouver Renewable

Energy Co-operative (VREC Solar), a worker cooperative, as part of a community-owned energy project called SolShare.

“The installation has no cost to the film society,” said qathet Film Society (qFS) executive director Gary Shilling. “We provide the roof and they supply the equipment. There is a small savings in our electrical bill, but the primary motivation was a belief in solar as the best way forward to expand electrical capacity in the world.”

Shilling said it was environmental advocate and Cinema Politca qathet member Charlie

Latimer who spearheaded the project.

“Charlie has a relationship with the film society and the Patricia as a member of Cinema Politica; they present a politically relevant film every month at the theatre,” added Shilling. “He advocated for SolShare and more specifically VREC Solar, the installer of the equipment.”

Shilling explained that the solar panels are factored against the theatre’s electrical usage, so they don’t actually power anything in the theatre, but feed back into the system.

Detection system in final stages More than 80 Savary Island property owners agree to host a fire sensor TANYA HILL community@prpeak.com

In less than one year, the community on Savary Island has made great strides in implementing a high-tech fire detection system.

Fire and water was the main concern for island residents in an Association of the Savary Island Community survey from 2023.

North Vancouver company SenseNet provided sensors and cameras that can detect wildfires early, using artificial intelligence (AI) technology and has been installing them in phases.

The final installation began in mid-April, according to Savary Island Lands Trust (SILT) executive director Liz Webster.

“I had no idea I would be this involved and that it would be over a year of work, but I am thrilled; it’s absolutely positive,” said Webster.

“More than 80 property

owners agreed to host a sensor on their property.”

After Savary resident and fire detection committee member Peter Armstrong approached Webster about the project last year, the SILT board agreed to help and raised more than $400,000 to pay for the project, which included installation of the hardware and activation of the monitoring service.

Since then, Webster has been coordinating access to sites, guiding installation crews across the island and ensuring property owners remained informed as work progressed.

“This strong level of community support was essential to the project’s progress and demonstrates islanders’ commitment to enhancing wildfire preparedness and public safety,” said Webster.

Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department (SIVFD) chief Doug Corbett has also been heavily involved with getting the early fire detection system implemented, since the system is supposed to make his work a little easier.

“In the past the public would visually see something and give us a call,” said Corbett. “Now the electronic system warns a person at

the monitoring station, and in that, if it’s a catastrophic event happening or a risky event, then they will call the E-COM system and [SIVFD] will get a call from 911.”

Corbett said from a fire department point of view, the protocol hasn’t changed, but now there’s better coverage than depending on people to detect a fire; now the island community has electronics for the job.

Armstrong, who initiated the SenseNet project, believes Savary was able to act faster than other communities to implement an early detection system, because most people on the island recognized that fire is a huge risk to their property and lifestyle.

“We had some very good people asking some tough questions of us, which in the end only made our proposal better and stronger,” said Armstrong. “One of the biggest items is, where does the money come from?”

He acknowledges that with inflation, economic uncertainty and wariness toward AI technology, resistance around the cost and privacy issues were expected.

“We raised over $400,000 and we’re just finalizing all

the accounting over the summer, and there may be additional funds that are needed to be raised, but on a much smaller scale for the operating cost,” said Webster. “We also tested out the cameras and they really only photograph from the canopy; people’s faces are not visible.”

Armstrong said Webster helped make the project happen and put in countless hours.

“Not only just on organizing the plans, but also more importantly, two things: helping me on the fundraising, and second, getting permission for the 95 sensors and the gateways,” added Armstrong.

The gateway sends the information to SenseNet, and the sensors, which are tiny

and unobtrusive, can detect heat and smoke.

“We are a volunteer fire department and only have so many resources, and everything that’s given to us to help with those resources is a benefit,” said Corbett.

“People aren’t supposed to have [open] fires here, but there’s still barbecues going on, and there are people who come up on a kayak on the beach, and they decide they’re going to have a fire, and they don’t know our bylaws. Being a resort area, in some ways, actually creates some extra challenges.”

Webster said the final component of the early fire detection system is the alert and notification protocol.

“Project partners are work-

ing closely to establish a direct notification process that will ensure fire detections are immediately relayed to 911 dispatch services,” said Webster. “As the fire department can only be dispatched through 911, establishing this protocol is a critical step in ensuring the system delivers the fastest possible response to potential wildfire incidents.”

Armstrong, Webster and Corbett agreed that the combination of advanced technology, strong community participation and collaboration among project partners is helping build a wildfire detection system that will enhance public safety and strengthen the island’s resilience for years to come.

“There is so much sun here, and I was thinking it would be nice to have some more solar,” said Latimer.

“With all the geopolitics right now and the push to revive these massive energy projects across Canada, including BC, I thought communityowned solar is a way for people to feel inspired for qathet and a step toward a fairer energy future.”

Latimer cites that some projects (across Canada) are back from the

dead, such as a northern oil sands pipeline designed to fill super tankers in coastal waters.

“The problem with these large projects is that they usually tend to ignore local stakeholders,” said Latimer. “One example locally is the old mill site. The community really doesn’t have a say about what happens there; that causes frustration because of the lack of transparency.”

SolShare follows the model of similar projects in Europe. Local individuals become community investors and pool their resources to

install solar energy systems at no cost to the building owners, and sell the power it produces.

“Roof-top solar energy is one of the lowest impact ways to produce more power,” said SolShare founder Robert Baxer. “Shared ownership, community power means that power is democratically owned by the local community.”

He said the Patricia Theatre building will be close to being net-zero, meaning it will produce as much power as it uses.

“However, it will still be con-

nected to the BC Hydro grid,” said Baxter. “So when solar produces extra power in the daytime that can be exported to the grid and the theatre will get a credit for it. At night when the solar is not producing, the theatre will get power from the grid.”

He said the idea is that members of the community can become shareholders in the project and receive dividends. This means the majority of revenue generated by the solar energy plant can stay in the local community.

“Solar is one of the cheapest forms of energy generation,” explained Baxter. “So over the long term there is a cost benefit.”

On July 29, Cinema Politica and the film society hosted Baxter at the Patricia to speak after the Canadian premiere of a documentary from the United Kingdom called Power Station.

Latimer said people who see the film will learn how to invest in the community-owned energy project.

Crew severs natural gas main Powell River Fire Rescue and FortisBC respond to incident on Westview Avenue PAUL GALINSKI reporter@prpeak.com

Three homes were evacuated on Westview Avenue on July 16 after some heavy equipment was digging and hit the natural gas mainline.

According to Powell River Fire Rescue deputy chief Ricky Swanson, the fire department was called at 9:50 am after the gas leak was reported. He said FortisBC arrived in about 15 minutes to attend to the leak.

“It was the actual gas main so they had to crimp it off 60 feet from the leak,” said Swanson. “We had to block traffic off in both directions, but the public was exceptionally helpful and respectful. One of the families that was there ended up

sitting outside and I offered them my truck, but they sat out in the sun while repairs were being made.”

When spoken to after noon, Swanson said traffic was again flowing in both directions.

Nicholas Insley, senior manager of corporate communications for FortisBC, said damage to the Powell River system was from an external party.

“At this time, we’re working to shut gas off for the impacted part of our system; we’ll then begin repairs,” said Insley. “Unfortunately, due to this damage to our system, approximately 65 customers will be without service as we work to make repairs.”

Insley said once repairs are completed and FortisBC reactivates the impacted portion of the system, crews will restore service by visiting each affected home or business to turn gas back on at the meter and relight all affected appliances.

“We don’t have an estimate at this time for how long this will take but

we are bringing in some additional resources to help,” added Insley.

He said public and employee safety is a top priority for FortisBC. “We would like to remind everyone that if you smell rotten eggs or hear the sound of escaping gas, stop what you’re doing, go outside and dial 911, or call FortisBC’s 24-hour emergency line at 1.800.663.9911,” said Insley. “We would also like to remind the public that the majority of damages to our gas system are preventable – always contact BC 1 Call (1.800.474.6886) before digging to gather information on the location of buried gas lines and other utilities.

“Approximately 90 per cent of damages to our gas lines are preventable by following safe excavation practices.”

The current fee pricing has been in place for 10 years, according to a staff report.

Since 2018, there have been two plaques, seven benches, a picnic table and a tree purchased as tribute products from the regional district.

Electoral Area E director Andrew Fall wanted to make an amendment to the tribute policy statement, which read that qRD respects that the public is interested in honouring persons and/or

community groups for various reasons and in various ways. Fall wanted to amend the statement to read that members of the public are interested in honouring persons and/or community groups.

“The reason why I am proposing this is because it is important to distinguish the difference between someone wanting to try to honour and memorialize a person through a tribute bench or plaque,” said Fall. “That’s

very different from the expectation that the qRD or community is honouring that person. An interested person chooses individually to apply, and our operational staff will work with that person to identify a location for the tribute product, and if it is appropriate, they will pay the fee. This isn’t meant to be a discussion about qRD bestowing honours.”

General manager of operational services Patrick Devereaux said the proposed amendment clarifies who, exactly, is coming forward and that it was appropriate. He said the tributes occur when someone passes and the family asks to have some kind of memorial. Fall’s amendment carried.

The committee then approved a motion that the committee recommend that the board approve the tribute policy as amended,

and that the board approve amendments to the qRD fees and charges bylaw to incorporate the fees and charges for tribute products.

According to the staff report the current fee for a tribute bench and plaque is $1,800, with the actual cost being $5,307. A tribute picnic table and plaque current fee is $2,100, while the actual cost is $7,352.

The actual cost for a tribute plaque is $741, while the current fee is $75. The current fee for a tribute tree and plaque is $800, while the actual cost is $1,293.

Concrete pads are included in the price.

In the recommended fee schedule, the cost of a bench and plaque would be $5,600, cost of a picnic table and plaque would be $7,750, a tree and plaque would be $1,375, and a plaque would be $800.

He said he wanted to point out one sentence of Johnston’s letter, which is at the core of what was being discussed, and that was: “Residents, many of whom are seniors, retirees and/ or on fixed incomes, are still going to be faced with a financing crisis just to stay in the homes in which they’ve lived for many years.”

“It’s about water, but it is about affording water,” said Fall. “If everyone could pitch in a million dollars, it would be solved quickly. It is a crisis and this letter writer expresses it well.

Johnston, in his letter, stated that there has been a federal grant that has been received to help provide a sustainable water supply, however, the terms of the grant require the 124 local users of the waterworks

district to cover 26.67 per cent of the total project cost.

“While cost estimates are still not finalized, the estimates, after significant trimming, will still have residents needing to fund $4 million,” stated Johnston. “We’ve been advised that through the regional district we could access 30-year loans from the Municipal Finance Authority (MFA) that would likely result in annual payments of $5,000 to $7,000 (or more) per household.

“The requirement for some creative funding or financing for the residents of our communities that have for years been dependent on improvement districts should be something the province and perhaps the MFA need to consider.

A solution for Lund could have province-wide impacts and may be the only way to ensure residents can stay in our homes and not have to move from the rural areas in which we’ve lived for years.”

Powell River Fire Rescue responded to a fire at a duplex on Willow Avenue and were able to extinguish the blaze quickly because a number of firefighters were at the fire hall for a practice session.

A fire at a duplex on Willow Avenue during the evening of July 21 resulted in the death of a cat. Another cat at the residence was found alive the following day.

According to Powell River Fire Rescue deputy chief Ricky Swanson, one person was living on each side of the duplex.

The structure fire started in the kitchen

on one side of the duplex, said Swanson.

“Luckily, there are family members who are able to take the people in, because they won’t be able to go back into the duplex,” he added. “We were fortunate that we had a number of firefighters at the fire station because we were training. Our response was quick. Our guys, once they got on scene, had a very quick, successful, knockdown of the fire.”

Swanson said the structure was saved and appears to be repairable, but the tenants will have to stay out of the residences. One side will need to be renovated, and on the other side, firefighters were able to minimize smoke damage.

No members of the public or firefighters were injured in the fire.

Police statistics for City of Powell River have been outlined for councillors. At a council meeting last month, Powell River RCMP staff sergeant Lee Dyson presented fourth quarter statistics for the city, along with yearover-year figures.

In terms of calls for service, in the fourth quarter, there were 1,224 calls in 2026, compared with 1,057 in 2025. For the year, there were 5,118 calls in the city in 2025/2026 and 5,064 in 2024/2025, for a one per cent increase, according to Dyson.

Mental Health Act calls increased from 29 in 2025 to 32 in 2026, and yearover-year, went from 117

calls in 2024/2025, to 155 in 2025/2026, for a 32.5 per cent increase.

Impaired driving went down in the quarter but was up year-over-year. There were 12 calls in the fourth quarter of 2025, compared to 11 in the fourth quarter of 2026.

For the fiscal year, there were 52 instances of impaired driving in 2024/2025 and 67 in 2025/2026, for a 29 per cent increase, according to Dyson’s report.

“We have a couple of members who are traffic-enforcement oriented and they are doing an excellent job in trying to apprehend and address impaired driving,” said Dyson.

Overall persons crimes went up in the fourth quarter but are down year-overyear. In the fourth quarter in 2025, there were 81 calls, compared to 107 in 2026. In 2024/2025, there were 402 calls, compared to 377 in 2025/2026.

Assaults also increased in the fourth quarter but were down year-over year.

In the fourth quarter in 2025, there were 33 calls, and in 2026, there were 39 calls. There were 177 calls

in 2024/2025, compared to 154 in 2025/2026, for a decrease of 13 per cent.

Sex offences increased in the fourth quarter from seven in 2025 to eight in 2026, but were down 29 per cent, from 31 in 2024/2025 to 22 in 2025/2026.

In overall property crime, fourth quarter calls went from 161 in 2025 to 202 in 2026, but dropped from 812 in 2024/2025 to 790 in 2025/2026.

Break and enter calls were up in the fourth quarter for residential, business and other.

“We were up substantially,” said Dyson.

In year-over-year break and enters, there was a 17.5 per cent increase. Dyson said the jump in business break and enters was attributed to a single person in the region for a short period of time.

“This person was active, both in the city and in the regional district area,” said Dyson. “We have not yet been able to charge this person, but not surprisingly, when they left the area, our business break and enters basically stopped. We’re

very confident that’s the person; we’re just trying to get enough evidence to be able to address that person through the courts.”

There was a slight increase in drug offence investigations in the fourth quarter, from eight in 2025 to nine in 2026, and an 18 per cent increase year-over-year in drug investigations, from 39 in 2024/2025, to 46 in 2025/2026. Dyson said arrests have been made as a result of the investigations.

Drug trafficking investigations have also gone up, with 13 in 2024/2025 and 19 in 2025/2026.

City councillor Trina Isakson asked Dyson if there were trends that he was most

concerned about.

“How safe are things feeling over the past year compared to previous years?” asked Isakson.

Dyson said he hasn’t been here for previous years, so that is difficult for him to address, but what the RCMP are hearing is that overall, this is a relatively safe community.

“Some of the trends we have are hard to talk about over the year because they ebb and flow in relatively short periods,” said Dyson.

“An example is break and enters, where an offender was here for a short period of time, hit a whole bunch of things, and then left.

“Some of the things we are hearing from the commu-

nity, the challenges we are hearing about as problems, include traffic safety. I have a letter on my desk that I received today about speeding in school zones. One of the things we have been getting lots of calls about is youth on e-scooters and electric bikes travelling at what has been determined as dangerously fast.”

Dyson said illicit drug use has been brought up as an issue, drug toxicity is a huge risk and there have also been extortion attempts, but not to the extent the Lower Mainland has.

“We are trying to make sure we are out there, talking to the public and getting feedback,” he added.

City of Powell River Council will consider adopting a policy covering code of conduct of candidates during election periods.

At a springtime meeting, corporate officer Peter DeJong outlined the proposed policy, indicating its purpose is to provide council with an opportunity to consider addressing the conduct of candidates and the use of city resources during the local election period. He said this year, the general voting day will fall on October 17.

“I can say with each general election that comes along, the ministry of housing and municipal affairs and Elections BC provide more and more comprehensive candidate information guides, and other online resources to assist the candidates, with respect to the requirements and expectations of running for elected office,” said DeJong.

“Similarly, local governments are becoming more cognizant of their responsibilities to ensure all participants in the process understand the role of local government during an election period, and the expectations for candidate conduct and non-use of local government resources for partisan purposes.”

DeJong said as noted in the draft policy, the city must conduct elections without influence to ensure public confidence in the unbiased administration of elections, to promote fairness and transparency, and safeguard the integrity of the election process.

“During an election period, use of city resources is to be restricted to ensure fairness and equity among all candidates and to keep the corporate entity of the city neutral in respect of partisan activities,” said DeJong. “While incumbent council members are also bound by city council’s code of conduct, the proposed policy lays out rules of conduct for all candidates, including any elector organizations or thirdparty sponsors.

“The policy also addresses city communications during the precampaign period and the campaign period, running from July

20 through October 17, which is defined in the policy as a quiet period, whereby business as usual communications and announcements for projects and initiatives already underway will proceed, while those that require public engagement, or where there is a likelihood of substantive public debate or scrutiny, will pause in respect of such communications.”

Dejong said the policy will provide guidance, not only to candidates, but also to staff, in clearly establishing the city’s neutral position during a local election, and the expectations for conduct of candidates.

City councillor George Doubt asked how the policy is intended to be enforced – how and when and by whom?

DeJong said enforcement would fall to the chief election officer in terms of complaints. He said conduct deemed to be contrary to the policy, in terms of dealing with that, the chief election officer has certain abilities to enforce procedures and matters dealing with the conduct of the election. He said the chief election officer would draw the alleged contravention to the candidate’s attention, and inform them that it is not behaviour or conduct consis-

“They would be advised and made aware of that and educated on what kind of conduct would be appropriate in the circumstances,” said DeJong.

Doubt said he did not hear anything about repercussions, such as removing the candidate from the ballot. That wouldn’t be part of the equation, DeJong replied.

Mayor Ron Woznow said staff had done an excellent job of putting together the policy, and that it will assist a lot of people who haven’t run for office before. He made a motion for the policy – conduct of candidates and use of city resources during election periods – to be brought forward to a future council meeting for consideration of approval. The motion carried unanimously.

Sobering statistics National Drowning Prevention Week may have ended on July 25, but water safety should be top of mind all summer.

Surrounded by the ocean, lakes and rivers, water is part of everyday life in the qathet region.

That makes the recent increase in drowning deaths in BC particularly sobering.

Forty accidental drowning deaths were recorded between May 1 and July 16 this year, a 54 per cent increase over the same period in 2025.

The message from Lifesaving Society BC and Yukon Branch is simple: wear a life jacket. Not only when the water looks rough. Every

time, regardless of age or swimming ability.

That advice applies to powerboats, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards.

It also means remembering that a warm summer day does not mean warm water.

Cold-water shock can overwhelm even strong swimmers, making the one-ten-one principle worth remembering: control your breathing during the first minute, attempt self-rescue while you still have useful movement during the next 10 minutes, and recognize that hypothermia can become life-threatening within an hour.

Programs at Powell River

Recreation Complex are doing important work, with more than 2,000 participants taking swimming lessons since the start of 2025, and local grade two students learning the Swim to Survive curriculum. But lessons and public awareness cannot replace individual responsibility.

Our beaches and parks are unsupervised. That means parents need to watch their children—not their phones—and boaters need to leave alcohol and drugs out of the equation.

A proclamation can mark one week. Staying safe around the water requires all of us to pay attention all summer, and all year.

Report paints picture of workplace dangers

When you visit the BC Legislature – and I heartily recommend you do so – you must pass through a metal detector and put any bags and belongings through it.

Any sharp objects, such as a Swiss army knife, must be given to security for the duration of your visit.

Once inside, you will see more than a dozen friendly security personnel and some of them are armed with guns.

They are fully trained police officers who once worked with other police detachments.

It’s an impressive security system and makes the legislature arguably one of the safest buildings in BC, outside

Union strike and sent the dispute to binding arbitration.

That report paints a very different picture of workplaces much more dangerous than the legislature is, with far less security present.

While much attention has been paid to the large gap that exists between what the employer was offering as a wage increase – 14 per cent over four years – versus what the union was asking – 32 per cent over the same period – the mediators’ report focused on another issue entirely: violence in the workplace.

Yes, the 32 per cent request was simply not realistic. I think the union negotiat-

ing team, which had earlier recommended accepting the 14 per cent increase only to see the union membership vote it down, came up with the absurdly lofty number to appease that membership, knowing full well it would never fly and the whole thing would go to arbitration.

But two other numbers in the report stood out more to me: 16 and 46.

As in, every 16 hours a BC nurse goes off on a WorkSafeBC claim because of violence at work and about 46 nurses a month suffer injuries from violence in the workplace.

Those are truly astonish-

ing and, frankly, alarming statistics.

Independent Surrey Cloverdale MLA Elenore Sturko, a former RCMP officer, has raised the issue of workplace safety in BC health facilities in the legislature on numerous occasions and has long called for much better training for those responsible for that safety. And she can’t help but contrast the legislature situation to one at a hospital.

“I like our security and protection for sure, but tourists and schoolchildren are the people we see most often, not people having psychotic breaks who may be walking

around with knives or other weapons,” she told me.

“Nurses work in much more dangerous places than where I work. They need much better protection,” she said.

The mediators, Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers, have strongly recommended the health ministry conduct a “meaningful” and comprehensive review of workplace safety with the goal of vastly improving the situation.

Hopefully that happens and hopefully it will lead to those two numbers – 16 and 46 – coming down a whole lot.

there was one parcel of vacant land sold in June 2026, valued at $219,000, compared to two sales in June 2025, valued at $145,000. There were two sales in the industrial, commercial and institutional category in June 2026, valued at $52,300, and there were none in June 2025.

Totals for nonresidential are three units sold in June 2026, valued at $271,300, compared to two units sold in June 2025, valued at $145,000.

The average single-family home selling price in June

2026 was $652,748 with an average of 55 days on the market, compared to an average selling price in June 2025 of $714,245, with an average of 79 days on the market. There was an 8.6 per cent differential in average price between June 2026 and June 2025. The median selling price was $585,000 in June 2026, compared to $645,000 in June 2025, for a 9.3 per cent differential.

There were 69 new residential listings in June 2026, and 14 new nonresidential listings, for a total of 83.

There were 226 residential active listings at the end of June 2026, and 65 active nonresidential listings, for a total of 291 active listings at the end of June 2026.

Real estate sales in June 2026 were substantially ahead of sales figures from June of 2025.

"June brought some welcome momentum to the single-family home market, with 39 sales, compared with 29 last June, an increase of 34 per cent,” said Powell River Sunshine Coast Real Estate Board president Curtis Yungen. “Year-todate, sales are still 11.5 per cent behind 2025, but it will be interesting to see if June’s stronger activity continues through the summer and into the fall.”

Yungen said prices remain softer, with June’s average and median sale prices both down about nine per cent from last year. Homes are selling closer to their asking price this year, indicating they were priced well, he added.

josh statham Dozens of boats braved a strong South East this past Saturday to compete in the PRO Top Rod and Municipality derbies. Despite the weather the fishing was incredible.

Those that went early did best as gust were reasonable until mid morning. Playing it safe didn’t hurt as many anglers reported success from Second Beach to the Mill.

The backside of Harwood was a safe place to hide out and the fishing was hot. Big Springs were taken shallow closer to the spit on plugs. Flash flies and buck tails have worked well too.

A pair of mid-20s Ling Cod won the bottom fish category in the PRO derby, caught on a “big white ugly thing” - P-Line Jig - at an incredible 300’+. If they aren’t biting at usual depths, don’t be afraid to go deep, but make sure your descender is working.

You’ve probably noticed more boats than usual at the Mill. It’s been reliable all season, and at times the best fishing around. The top Coho and top Chinook both came from the mill, and many oversized were reported.

Large colourful plugs have produced.

Grant Reefs has been hit or miss so far, with more action at the Can then the top end. This past week though the North end was on fire. Clown Hoochies and good ‘ol reliable Bon Chovie were producing.

The reef between Harwood and Rebecca has been on fire ever since Chinook opened, holding bait along the 140’ contour line on the South side. Behind Rebecca, Coho Point and Favada have all yielded plentiful good sized Springs.

Supervisor urges safety for carriers Canada Post hoping for help from pet owners PAUL GALINSKI reporter@prpeak.com

Canada Post is calling for a partnership with dog owners to keep delivery employees safe.

According to a media release from Canada Post, every day, employees deliver to more than 8,400 households in Powell River.

“Many of these households have dogs and our delivery agents encounter them every day while delivering mail and parcels, especially as the summer-like weather has more and more people spending time outdoors,” the release stated. “Our top priority is the safety of our employees, which includes safe access to mailboxes and the front door.”

In an interview with the Peak, Canada Post area supervisor Jennifer Taylor said that City of Powell River animal control bylaws do not apply to the circumstances because the offending animal has to be outside of the boundaries of the household. “[Bylaw officers] can’t do anything about it if the dog is loose on their own property,” said Taylor. “Obviously, we are going onto people’s property and that is where we are mostly running into the problem. If a dog is loose in their yard and as soon as we come onto the driveway, dogs can react, barking and charging. Multiple times it has ended in a bite.

“The problem is dogs loose on their own property, or

they are on their property, our letter carriers are on the street and a dog charges.”

Taylor said it is important for dog owners to be responsible for animals in their own domain and maintain control when carriers are doing their jobs.

“You wouldn’t believe how many people say to us ‘just meet our dog, it is so friendly, or, if you only brought a treat, then our dog would like you,’” said Taylor. “We have procedures in place where we are not allowed to carry dog treats.”

Taylor said Canada Post wants to deliver the mail, but it is important that it be done safely.

“I want every single carrier to go home the same way they came to work,” said Taylor. “Powell River has such a fantastic group of letter carriers.

“It’s scary being chased by a dog. I’ve been charged by a dog, too, and I am the biggest dog lover. There is something about the way we come to the house. Dogs bark at us through the window and we leave, so they have done their job. But, that one time that they are loose, they can be ready to charge at a carrier.”

The media release stated that Canada Post is proud to deliver their customers’ packages and mail.

“That’s why we need to ensure our employees can do it safely,” the release stated.

“This is our number one priority and responsibility as an employer to every employee.

“Recently, our letter carriers in Powell River have experienced several serious incidents involving loose dogs.

The release stated that Canada Post employees understand dogs can sometimes be protective of their homes and families.

To customers with dogs, Canada Post asks for partnership in keeping neighbours, Canada Post employees and other delivery employees safe when they are delivering in their neighbourhood. “Steps include: being careful when you answer the door, so your dog does not slip out; keeping your dog inside, in a fenced yard, or tied up far from the front door or mailbox; keeping front doors and fence

gates closed; and keeping your dog away from the screen door, even if it is locked.”

For safety reasons, dog owners are asked not to introduce their dogs to letter carriers. Due to the nature of their work, carriers visit homes on a regular basis uninvited, while wearing uniforms and carrying mail and parcels. These factors can be perceived by dogs as a territorial threat, increasing the risk of defensive or aggressive behaviour.

Even dogs with no history of aggression may react unexpectedly. Maintaining a secure separation between pets and delivery employees helps prevent injuries and ensures safe delivery for everyone.

Funding continues for Bangladesh project Sunshine Coast Mothers School records many successes

Lives in the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh, continue to be changed because of a project initiated through efforts of a qathet region Rotarian.

Bente Hansen has been a member of the local Rotary club since moving here from the Lower Mainland. She presented the club with an idea for an international project: Start With Mothers/ Amarok Society.

“What has made this project so important to me is the courage of the mothers,” said Hansen. “Because they learned to read and write at the school, they educated people in their slum how to combat COVID and no one died there; they have started food banks and day cares, and stood up to bullying landlords because of what they read in newspapers.”

Rotary raises funds for the project by selling Sunshine Coast puzzles that feature sites from Lund to Langdale.

They are available at the Peak office, Artique Artists Cooperative, qathet Visitor Centre, Co-operators\ Westview Agencies and Paperworks Gift Gallery.

Letters are exchanged between mothers attending Sunshine Coast Rotary Mothers School located in Khulna and the local club’s international committee members, including co-chair Elke Sager, who has worked alongside Hansen all the way.

“The education we receive is changing our lives although we still face many struggles in our lives with food, rent, medicine and other issues,” wrote Munni, one of the mothers who teach 125 children. “However, we no longer face these problems alone.”

Before attending the mothers’ school, many of the women lived in isolation.

Now they support each other and work together to solve problems. When one mother

struggles, others help, hope and build confidence.

“We may be poor, but together we are stronger,” added Munni.

This year 28 children graduated from 25 micro-schools and became micro-school graduate children. Despite poverty and many hardships, they continued their education and succeeded.

The next goal is to help those graduate children become child- teachers and role models in their communities.

“We believe that when children help other children learn, our community becomes stronger,” wrote Salma. “This is our dream, and we are working hard to make it happen.”

More teachers are needed because many children in the slums still do not have the opportunity to study. The graduates are now studying in higher grades, but they also teach younger brothers, sisters, neighbours, and even some adults. Some also do part-time work to help their families while continuing

their education.

A small community gathering is being planned to celebrate these graduates with invites being passed out to their parents, grandparents and local leaders to celebrate what they’ve accomplished over the years.

“Through this event, we want to encourage families to keep their children in school and recognize these young volunteers who can help,” wrote Salima.

The letter concluded with an appreciation for the support of Sunshine Coast Rotary.

An email received July 15 from Start With Mothers/Amarok Society in Edmonton, stated: “We want to thank Rotary for your generous support of the Sunshine Coast Rotary Mothers' School. Your continued sponsorship gives these women in Bangladesh tools to transform their own lives, the lives of the children they most care about, and their neighbourhoods.

In response, Hansen told the Peak, “Our club will continue to fundraise to support this mothers’ school and the incredible, inspiring effort they are making to change lives.”

Her book, titled Girl Gangs, Zines, and Powerslides: A history of badass women skateboarders, is in the running to win the 2026 debut award for authors who have published a book for the first time.

SCWES founder and author Cathalynn Labonte-Smith said this particular contest is unique in that it’s open to both trade and self-published authors who are BC residents.

ciation’s umpire-in- chief, said the umpires this season range in age from 12 to the mid-40s.

“I’ve been involved with baseball for 15 years now and about five years ago, dads were having to umpire because people weren’t showing up, or we just didn’t have umpires,” said Slack.

“Interest has grown, however, and we’ve had two umpires at every game, with one at the plate and another on base. It’s working well, so well that some kids didn’t get enough games because we had so many umpires.

“We had to spread it out, but kids were asking, ‘when can I ump again, when can I ump again?’”

Minor baseball president Brenden Frehlich said a few of the new umpires might drop off after the first year, but the association is in a healthy situation.

The association is fortunate to have some experienced umpires. Josh Chernoff went to umpire school in Florida to get extra training, received more training in Kamloops for some Canada level three training, and has been able to impart knowledge to the association’s umpires.

Frehlich said in terms of leadership, there was a vacancy for the umpire-inchief position, Slack saw that some help was needed, and stepped into the role.

“She did a fantastic job of recruiting young umpires, having clinics, with really great communication and scheduling,” said Frehlich.

“Mentorship was a huge thing we introduced this year. We had senior umps sitting behind the backstop and helping younger umps through those difficult moments that can make or break their confidence.

only good for the umps, but for the coaches and kids to learn how we navigate when there are tough calls to be made.”

Frehlich said it is anticipated some of the young umpires will not carry on when they are 16 years old, but it’s great to have so many young kids try out. He added that several of them have excelled and it’s obvious that umpiring is for them.

“I got to mentor a few times and see them gain their confidence from the start in the clinics, all the way to the end of the season,” said Frehlich.

“It was satisfying.”

Slack said at the beginning of the year, she was shocked when she saw 14 new umpires had signed up.

“There was a group of acquaintances who decided to do it,” said Slack. “Most of them are going to be able to move up and ump at the U13 level next year.

Hopefully, we’ll get some new ones coming in next year. I’ve already heard a couple of kids ask: when is the next clinic?”

Frehlich said minor baseball has been building on the excitement generated over the past couple of seasons in Powell River, and having the

Toronto Blue Jays going to the World Series final last fall also created awareness about baseball.

“There was way more baseball on people’s minds going into this year in Powell River than in years past,” said Frehlich.

Having two umpires at every game has been beneficial for the quality of officiating and Slack said it has been fantastic. Frehlich said it results in better calls, and the two umpires can talk between each inning and work through the calls.

“It’s nice to have someone else out there that you can talk to and discuss the calls that were made,” said Frehlich.

Slack said when she saw the two umpires conversing during games, it showed their commitment to making sure every game is played fairly for everybody.

Baseball is coming close to the end of the season, and Frehlich said there will be a couple of teams playing into early August. He said the U13 rep team played at home the weekend of July 18 and 19 and will go on to play in the zone finals to see whether they advance to the provincial champion-

ship. Some of the organization’s most skilled umpires will be making the calls during those games. The U15s are also working toward the zone finals.

This year, the baseball association has resurrected the Bob Hoskins umpire of the year award, and handed out plaques to the junior and senior umpires of the year this season.

James Barrows was named the junior umpire of the year, and Josh Chernoff is the senior umpire of the year, for excellence in umpiring.

Level one umpires this year include: Kaleb Slack, Jase King, Declan Paul, Alex Devlin, Everett Clifton, Connor Gustafson, Yewen MacDonald, Max Turner, Greyson Carlos, Jordan Barrows, Grady Meyers, Blake Lefler, Logan Muzylowski and Greydan Kendrick. Level two umpires include: Liam Robbins, Gabe Cudmore, Reily Strickland, Julian Valing, Leighton Palmquist, Barrows and Quynn Lefler in the junior category, and Kevin Slack, Brenden Frehlich, Jim Barrows, Earl Almeida and Ty Daniels in the senior category. Chernoff is the level three umpire.

Swimmers win trophy POW Swim Club takes air band competition at Campbell River meet

Members of POW Swim Club are celebrating after attending the Campbell River Salmon Kings invitational swim meet for capturing top honours at this year's air band competition.

According to a media release from the club, swimmers won with an energetic performance of “Oops!...I Did It Again” by Britney Spears.

The release stated that the competition is a highlight of the annual Campbell River meet, which was attended by teams from across the Vancouver Island region on July 4 and 5. The meet was the fifth competition of the season. With nearly 30 POW swimmers in the pool, it was seen as successful by the coaches.

The annual competition is a highlight of the swim season, bringing teams together for an evening of creativity, teamwork and entertainment, according to the release. The POW team impressed judges with their enthusiasm, choreography and commitment to bringing swim culture into their performance of the pop hit in the competition.

The championship trophy—recognizable for the miniature Elvis figure perched on top—will once again bear the name of POW. For a smaller club, the win is an especially meaningful achievement and a testament to the dedication and spirit of its swimmers and coaches, the release stated.

"I am immensely proud of our talented swimmers, and now air band champions,” stated POW assistant coach Jaya Nouwens. “Their commitment to teamwork and performance delivery was incredible to be a part of."

While the air band competition

is all about having fun, it also reflects the values that define the swim team throughout the season, the release stated. Beyond developing strong swimming skills, the program encourages teamwork, goal setting, perseverance and sportsmanship.

The victory is a proud moment for the club and its families, reminding everyone that success comes in many forms. Whether racing in the pool, or performing on stage, the swimmers demonstrated that confidence, teamwork and a willingness to have fun can create lasting memories for the entire team, according to the release.

According to head coach Alex Jevons, the dance competition was started in the 1990s as a way for Campbell River to attract more clubs and families from the South Island to make the trek up for their meet.

swimmers by day, dancers by night, and all the clubs get really creative with the theme, dance moves and costumes. This year’s theme was the early 2000s, so there were lots of great hits.”

This BC Day long weekend many folks in qathet will be outside on the water with a paddle board, kayak or canoe.

Wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) should be a given, but many people often don't wear one, due to their belief and attitude that a serious injury or drowning while in or on the water could never happen to them.

Already this summer, more than 40 people have drowned in BC's lakes and oceans; 77 per cent were male; 86 per cent were children who were unsupervised or had distracted supervisors watching them, with a majority of drownings happening between May and September.

The Peak spoke with the Community Against Preventable Injuries

[Preventable] co-executive director Dr. Ian Pike (in partnership with LifeSaving Society BC and Yukon Branch) about water safety and drowning prevention strategies.

"Most people's perception of how people drown is rather like what you see in the movies," said Pike. "Lots of splashing, waving of arms, calling for help and so on.

But in fact, we know that it is very much a more silent event."

What most people don't know, explained Pike, is that people drown very quietly and very quickly.

"That second of distraction could see you lose sight of somebody who's in the water who's struggling," said Pike.

"The obvious thing is to try and recognize the signs that somebody is in trouble, either tired or weakening, so you can offer assistance."

He said it's important, even before getting into the water, for people to take preventative measures, such as wearing a flotation device, if they're out swimming in the open water.

"Wind, waves, currents,

cold can all be a factor," said Pike. "Take along a swim buddy, and/or wear one of those inflatable swimming buoys that offer you assistance if you need to rest because they have good flotation."

Many folks have likely seen swimmers at Willingdon Beach or on Powell Lake with a bright neon floatation device floating behind them while they swim. These swim-aids are not only useful for swimmers, but also so boaters can see who is in the water.

"One of the cardinal rules about swimming, in particular swimming in open water, is to not swim alone," said Pike. "Always have a buddy, or somebody who's in the water with you, or somebody who's in a canoe, kayak or a paddleboard who will track you, so in the event that things go sideways, you've got somebody there to help."

Many people out on the water overestimate their abilities, said Pike.

"Whether you're a strong swimmer and a very experienced swimmer, even a competitive Olympic swimmer, conditions in the water can

change fairly rapidly, and it can overcome even the best swimmers," he added. "We know that very accomplished swimmers have gotten themselves into trouble, or have become challenged by the changing environment, such as in the Okanagan's Across the Lake Swim.”

He said 1,200 or so swimmers took part in the swim across Okanagan Lake in Kelowna last month.

The participants would have to be fairly confident swimmers, said Pike, but 120 entrants did not make it across the lake because the conditions were quite windy and wavy, and unfortunately, one of the swimmers drowned.

"Now, what happens is people think, 'I've done this 20, 30 or 100 times before, and I've never got in trouble, why would I get in trouble this time?'" said Pike. "So that little belief says, 'it's not going to happen to me; if anybody's going to get into trouble, it's the other guy, not me.'"

The problem, according to Pike, is that it only takes a small change in factors such as water temperature, wind speed, wave frequency and height to alter the situation such that the swimmer is overwhelmed.

"First of all, there's a lot of evidence and a lot of knowledge about what to do to prepare to go in the water," said Pike. "As I previously mentioned, use a swim buddy, and one of these tie-on inflatable buoys if in open water. If you're a less accomplished swimmer, the first thing to do is to become familiar with how to be in the water by taking swimming

lessons, and more importantly, how to survive in the water."

He said when paddle boarding or kayaking, ensure that the life jacket or personal flotation device is worn, not just on board.

"Many people think that if they fall off the paddleboard, they can just grab the paddleboard and climb back on board," said Pike. "But there are events where you come off the paddleboard, and before you resurface and can grab it, it's blown away; it's gone."

Another factor when it comes to water safety is temperature. Cold water affects human physiology and how muscles work.

"We are weaker and less powerful in very cold water and it doesn't take long before hypothermia sets in; we become so cold that we literally can't function," said Pike.

"So the idea about having a PFD on when you're paddle boarding means those changes in circumstance don't have such drastic effects if you fall

in the water, because now, at the very least, you're at the surface of the water."

Having access to swimming lessons and water survival programs can also keep community members safe, emphasized Pike.

"First of all, the municipality or the jurisdiction responsible for that waterfront, if they're able to invest in lifeguarding services, they should, and they should then define a swimming area and educate the public to swim within that area where the lifeguards are patrolling, but that's an expensive proposition," said Pike. "The things that the municipality or jurisdiction can do is public education, and what Preventable does is develop a social marketing campaign designed to address people's attitudes and beliefs about how to be safe, so we have worked with jurisdictions responsible for waterfronts."

After a full life loving his family, his home, his community and the ocean, Graham slipped away with the tide.

Left behind to mourn are Marty, Jeffrey (Brenda), Jenny (Jeff) and beloved granddaughters Shaylin and Megan (Chris).

Robert was born in St. Jovite, Quebec, and then moved with his family to Powell River when he was eight. He attended Max Cameron Secondary School and took a BA in Economics from UVic. He worked in management at The Bay at locations around BC, and then at Granada Entertainment in Vancouver.

Robert met his wife, Guadalupe, and her son David, in Vancouver in 1988 and soon became a part of their lives. Early in their relationship, they helped each other through different health struggles, which set them up for facing challenges together later on in their marriage.

In 1993, Guadalupe was offered a job setting up Grace House here in Powell River. The family moved and bought a house in Westview. Robert and Guadalupe were married on September 26, 1998, in the midst of Guadalupe starting a fight against breast cancer. Robert was a huge support during that time, and they got married with matching shaved heads.

Robert loved riding his Kawasaki motorcycle and toured down the coast to California and Oregon, as well as across Canada.

He opened Works Printing and Design, a home-based graphic design company. He printed numerous local artists’ works, from locally written books and art calendars to business cards and the Powell River Living magazine. In his later years, you could find Robert at River City Coffee, meeting clients, doing a little work and enjoying an Americano.

Robert is survived by his wife, Guadalupe, son David, daughterin-law Megan, grandson Diego, niece Madison and sisters Sandra and Brigette.

His celebration of life will be held on September 21, 2026, at the Pavilion at Willingdon Beach from 3 to 5 pm. His family would love to see anyone who was touched by Robert’s good humour and kind heart. Bring your best Robert story or joke to share, as well as a flower of your choice to add to a communal bouquet.

In place of flowers, please donate to your favourite rescue centre.

Gordon Douglas Cameron

June 3, 1950 - July 16, 2026 Gordon Douglas Cameron passed away on July 16, 2026, peacefully at home, at the time of his choosing and with his wife by his side. He was predeceased by his parents Morley and Shirley Cameron.

Gordon is survived by his wife Lani, his much-loved son Ryan Plante (Kelly) and the grandchildren he adored from Kamloops, his sister Carol Cameron of Abbotsford and many friends.

Gordon was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan on June 3, 1950. The family moved to Powell River in 1965 when his father, a retired RCMP officer, took a security job at the pulp mill.

Gordie became involved in baseball, hockey and golf; he loved all sports.

He got a job at the mill and retired from there just shy of 39 years. He was proud to be a papermaker.

Gordie and Lani spent almost 30 glorious years owning a cabin up the lake and had many enduring memories of the good times there. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends and was so frustrated when he could no longer even do his household chores.

Special thanks go to the palliative care team, home support and Dr. DuToit, and also to the ALS Society for not only equipment, but emotional support. Compassionate care until the end.

Gordon often said he hoped to pass peacefully in his sleep, just as his parents had done, and that wish came true.

You could often hear people say, “Gordie Cameron must be around! I’d recognize that joyous laugh anywhere!”

The world is a darker place without him.

Rocky Mountain Pizza and Bakery changes hands Owner jumps at chance to take over legacy of 34-year-old bakery

The scent of baking sourdough has drifted down Marine Avenue for more than three decades, but inside Rocky Mountain Pizza and Bakery, a quiet change is happening.

Longtime baker Sean O’Malley has officially taken the reins of the popular Powell River nosh spot from his friend and retiring owner Mark Dowling. For O’Malley, who was born and raised in Powell River, the transition is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.

“I’ve known Mark for a long time, and when he made me an offer to come on board as his baker, with the intention that I would buy the business when he wanted to retire, I jumped at the chance,” explains O’Malley. “I have always wanted to own my own business.”

Taking over a 34-year-old culinary institution brings immense responsibility, and O’Malley treats the bakery’s legacy with deep respect.

He has spent his first months doing a lot of observing, getting a feel for the daily rhythm and learning exactly what the community loves.

“I want to make sure we are using high-quality ingredients and keeping everything fresh for our customers,” he adds. “I’m buying good bacon and good meat, and trying to push for a little bit of elevated offerings.”

O’Malley supports local vendors, such as the Chopping Block.

“I buy all my meat through them. I’ve carried on a lot of Mark’s traditions, but I’m also open to trying some other things, too.”

Some of those traditions include baking dozens of sourdough, 12-grain breads every day, to be used for sandwiches, plus, he bakes fresh scones and pastries from scratch daily.

O’Malley is quietly pushing the envelope on quality. Every slice of old-fashioned roast beef, smoked turkey and Black Forest ham is sourced from high quality vendors and used in meat and vegetarian sandwiches. The bakery’s famous thick-topped pizzas, especially the top-selling Hawaiian, meat lovers and Mediterranean, now feature high-quality bacon and premium meats.

The bustling summer coffee rush relies entirely on freshly ground beans from Strait Coffee on the southern Sunshine Coast.

“We do pizza by the slice; our pizza crust is fantastic,” says O’Malley. “We put a ton of toppings on them and use high quality meat.”

Coffee is always on hand at Rocky Mountain, whether it’s Americano’s, latte’s, espresso and drip coffee, iced or hot.

“We sell a lot of coffee and right now [in the summer], and we go through a ton of ice. I

get my beans from a supplier on the southern Sunshine Coast; I hear people who have tried our coffee say it’s wonderful.”

The community spaces remain untouched.

The bakery’s back room will continue hosting local book clubs and garden clubs that have gathered there for years under Dowling’s ownership.

“We have a couple of clubs that meet every week,” says O’Malley. “That was one of Mark’s traditions that I plan to carry on.”

Visitors can expect a slow, intentional spruce-up of the space at 4711 Marine Avenue.

O’Malley plans to roll out fresh paint, update equipment and new shop furniture to make the atmosphere even more enjoyable.

“I want the place to be welcoming and have fresh offerings in our pastry case. Our muffins

are really popular.”

As the seasons shift, so will the menu. While summer crowds flock to the shop for iced lattes, fresh scones and first-class cinnamon buns, O’Malley is already planning ahead for fall and winter.

Alongside daily made-from-scratch pastries and fresh muffins, the bakery will soon introduce hearty, comforting stews and chilis to warm up chilly afternoons.

“Our customers are wonderful,” says O’Malley, looking ahead to the future. “I look forward to continuing to serve them fresh, good quality provisions.”

Rocky Mountain Pizza and Bakery is open Monday to Friday from 6:30 am to 5 pm and Saturday’s in the summer from 6:30 am until 1 pm.
